A laboratory investigation was conducted to study the effect of various concentrations of copper on the freshwater algae Scenedesmus quadricauda and Chlorella vulgaris. Electron-dense inclusions were observed in the vacuoles of S. quadricauda, and this alga showed some growth at a dose as high as 2,500 μg.1−1. The occurrence of the electron-dense inclusions was correlated significantly with the copper concentration and seems to be implicated in the tolerance of the species. C. vulgaris was much more sensitive to copper than S. quadricauda and showed osmotic changes and membrane damage.  相似文献

Aqueous extracts from 33 species of marine algae were assessed for their methyl mercaptan-trapping activity by gas chromatography to search for novel natural oral deodorants. Brown algae belonging to the Laminariales such as Eisenia bicyclis, Ecklonia cava and Ecklonia kurome were found to show remarkable deodorizing action against methyl mercaptan. The effective components in Eisenia bicyclis were identified as a phlorotannin, a group of molecules which are characteristic components of Laminariales. In addition phlorotannins extracted from E. bicyclis were more effective at reducing methyl mercaptan than conventional natural deodorants such as chlorophyll and sodium copper chlorophyllin.Author for Correspondence  相似文献

The primary goal of this study was to evaluate the relative importance of habitat physical properties, bottom-up and top-down factors, and their interaction on algae biomass in tank-bromeliads. We sampled algae biomass (chlorophyll-a concentration), micro-metazoan density, mosquito abundance, and several environmental variables, including nutrient concentrations and characteristics of the habitat physical structure, in a survey of 64 tank-bromeliads of four different species (Aechmea nudicaulis, Aechmea lingulata, Neoregelia cruenta, and Vriesea neoglutinosa). We analyzed the complete and individual bromeliad species datasets using an information-theoretic model selection approach (Akaike’s information criterion). Bromeliad species, maximum water volume, and bromeliad diameter comprised the best model for determining chlorophyll-a concentrations for the complete dataset. The maximum water volume also comprised the best model to explain chlorophyll-a concentrations in three of four bromeliad species datasets. Interactions between consumers and nutrient concentration were included in the subsequent models, but they were not statistically significant. Taken together, these results demonstrate that the impact of habitat size on the associated autotrophic biomass occurs possibly via changes in community susceptibility to disturbances, particularly drought. We can conclude that habitat size is more important than resource availability or herbivory on phytotelm autotrophic biomass regulation in these natural microcosms.  相似文献

Certain metals in three coastal algae from Ras Beirut waters   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
In July and August of 1977, samples of Halimeda tuna (Ellis & Solander) Lamouroux, Calpomenia sinuosa (Mertens & Roth) Derbes & Solier, and Pterocladia pinnata (Hudson) Papenfuss were collected along the coast of Ras Beirut, Lebanon and analyzed for lead, cadmium, copper, nickel and iron. The metal concentrations were quite similar in all three algae, except for iron, which was markedly higher in C. sinuosa, and lead, which was considerably lower in P. pinnata than in the other two species. These metal levels, particularly of lead, copper, and nickel seem to be rather high and may, in part, be due to untreated domestic sewage, industrial effluent, automobile exhaust, and outdoor incineration.Because little is known about the uptake, retention, use and tolerance of heavy metals by marine algae, more work in this field of study is needed.  相似文献

The effect of pH on copper toxicity to two planktonic blue-green algae, Aphanizomenon gracile and Oscillatoria redekei, was investigated. Growth rates of the algae without copper treatment decrease with pH, Aphanizomenon is earlier and more affected than Oscillatoria. On the other hand, pH-lowering leads sooner to a toxicity enhancement in Oscillatoria. In the acid range, toxicity retardation occurs in Aphanizomenon. At pH 5.1, shortening of the interval between copper toxicity and copper stimulus is characteristic for both species.  相似文献

The present study focused on the responses of six freshwater algal species (Anabaena ambigua, Anabaena subcylindrica, Nostoc commune, Nostoc muscorum, Spirogyra sp., and Spirulina sp.) to manganese and zinc. Laboratory experiments were conducted for the assessment of biochemical responses to manganese and zinc at various concentrations (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 mg/L) for 15 days of exposure. After the incubation period, 10 ml of sample was centrifuged at 6000 rpm for 15 min and the pellets were used for measurement of the various experimental parameters. The toxicological study of manganese on algae showed that Anabaena ambigua was most sensitive algae. Regarding effects of manganese concentrations, chlorophyll, protein, carbohydrate, starch, and amino acid were inhibited 50% (IC50) at 3 mg/L, whereas the toxicological study of zinc on algae Anabaena subcylindrica showed most adverse effects. Regarding effects of zinc concentrations, chlorophyll, protein, carbohydrate, starch, and amino acid were inhibited 50% (IC50) at 1 mg/L. The inhibitory and stimulatory effects of either of the used heavy metals depend on concentration. Different organisms, however, have different sensitivities to the same metal, and the same organism may be more or less damaged by different metals.  相似文献

In 1981, experiments to study the toxicity of copper in its ionic, complexed (to humic acid) and adsorbed (on cellulose fibers from a local paper mill) forms on species composition, standing crop, and photosynthesis of phytoplankton were conducted in chemostats with natural aggregations composed mainly of either green algae or of diatoms from the Saguenay River. In the aggregations of green algae, the rates of primary production were more strongly inhibited by copper than were the chlorophyll a concentrations, whereas the cell numbers, standing crop and rates of primary production of the diatoms were all strongly inhibited by copper.  相似文献

Three species of Arctic to cold-temperate amphi-Atlantic algae, all occurring also in the North Pacific, were tested for growth and/or survival at temperatures of −20 to 30°C. When isolates from both western and eastern Atlantic shores were tested side-by-side, it was found that thermal ecotypes may occur in such Arctic algae.Chaetomorpha melagonium was the most eurythermal of the 3 species. Isolates of this alga were alike in temperature tolerance and growth rate but Icelandic plants were more sensitive to the lethal temperature of 25°C than were more southerly isolates from both east and west. With regard toDevaleraea ramentacea, one Canadian isolate grew extraordinarily well at −2 and 0°C, and all tolerated temperatures 2–3°C higher than the lethal limit (18–20°C) of isolates from Europe. ConcerningPhycodrys rubens, both eastern and western isolates died at 20°C but European plants tolerated the lethal high temperature longer, were more sensitive to freezing, and attained more rapid growth at optimal temperatures. The intertidal species,C. melagonium andD. ramentacea, both survived freezing at −5 and −20°C, at least for short time periods.C. melagonium was more susceptible thanD. ramentacea to desiccation. Patterns of thermal tolerance may provide insight into the evolutionary history of seaweed species.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate seed germination under natural temperature and light regimes and to evaluate the influence of freshwater microalgae on seed germination of threeVallisneria species. Seeds exposed to natural seasonal temperature and light changes for 24 months germinated only in spring, perhaps indicating an annual dormancy/non-dormancy cycle. The ecological background of the natural habitat seems to play predominant roles in seed germinability. Mean cumulative seed germination percentages of Vallisneria natans, V. denseserrulata, andV.spinulosa of the first year were 35.2, 19.2, and 11.2%, respectively, and of the second year were 80, 72, and 32.4%, respectively. Germination rates differed significantly among the three Vallisneria species exposed to natural seasonal temperature and light changes in the first year, but differed only between Vallisneria spinulosa and the other two species in the second year. The differences of germination may influence the geographical distribution and thus be related to different survival strategies of the species. Seed germination rates in culture solution inoculated with algae were significantly higher than in solution with no algae. A strong correlation occurred between total biomass of freshwater microalgae and seed germination of the three studied species. Apparently, the extracellular products of freshwater microalgae may play an important role in seed germination. These results support the hypothesis that Vallisneria colonization may be mediated by algae facilitation.  相似文献

Copper and zinc salts act synergistically and have inhibitory effects on the growth of the diatoms Amphora coffeaeformis and Amphiprora hyalina. The concentrations required to cause a significant reduction in growth yields indicate that the isolates of the two species used are copper and zinc tolerant. Some growth stimulation was found in lower concentrations of the two metals. Cellular levels generally increased with increasing concentrations in the external medium, resulting in increased growth inhibition. Growth yields and cellular copper concentrations were found to be related to calculated cupric ion activities in the medium. Relative inhibitory and cellular concentrations of copper and zinc tor A. coffeaeformis and A. hyalina suggest that the latter species may be more sensitive to CuC12‐2HjO and more tolerant to ZnCl2 than the former. The results suggest that inclusion of ZnO as an additional biocide in self‐polishing copolymer antifouling paints would result in more effective antifouling action.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The algal flora of the Rivers Hayle and Gannel. whieh drain copper and lead mining regions of Cornwall, are described and compared. Although fluctuations in the rarer members of the algal communities were observed, the dominant filamentous algae at most sites did not change over the year of study. Both the total algal abundance and the number of species were depressed at high metal sites. Associations of species that were evident in field samples were confirmed and correlated with water metal levels by principal component analysis. The close similarity between the flora of similar sites on the copper-polluted River Hayle and the lead-polluted River Gannei implies that the degree of metal pollution, rather than the polluting metal per se, determines the species present. All mine sites were characterized by a Microspora -community whereas a Zygnemales community of Spirogyra and Mougeotia species was typical of low metal pollution. Moderately polluted sites downsteam of the mines had an intermediate flora of Zygnemaies, Microsporales. Ulotrichales and gelatinous Volvocales and Tetrasporales species. No species could be said to invariably indicate metal pollution; the most abundant species at highly contaminated sites were also those with the widest distributions. Field samples of filamentous algae (mainly Spirogyra, Zygogonium, Mougeotia and Microspora species) contained metal concentrations several orders of magnitude greater than ambient levels. For copper and iron, both algal metal contents and concentration ratios (μg g-1 algae/μg ml-1 water) were positive functions of water metal levels, although algal iron appeared to plateau at water concentrations of about 1 mg ml-1. Algal lead concentrations, but not the concentration ratios, also were positively correlated with water lead levels. Thus, for these three metals, the algal metal contents were indicative of ambient conditions. In contrast, algal zinc concentrations were nearly constant and consequently the concentration ratios for this metal were inversely related to water levels. This result suggests that unlike the uptake of other metals, uptake of zinc by these aigae may be strictly regulated.  相似文献

We evaluated the ability of heavy metals (copper, lead) to alter lipid metabolism in four algal lichen photobionts following short term exposure. Metal concentrations (10 microM) were equivalent to environmentally relevant levels that have been reported to have effects on intact algae. The algae were grown under normal or deficient phosphate conditions to assess any interactions with the heavy metal stress. Given the frequent sensitivity of lichens to copper and lead, there were surprisingly small changes on lipid metabolism, as assessed by radiolabelling from [1-14C]acetate. The main effects, which were seen in a number of cases, were an overall inhibition of total lipid labelling and a relative increase in the labelling of triacylglycerols in the non-polar fraction. Both of these changes can be viewed as reflecting general toxicity of heavy metals. The Coccomyxa photobiont species were more sensitive than Trebouxia species, which fits with the general distribution of the latter in lichens inhabiting harsh environments.  相似文献

Responses of different planktonic algae species to copper treatment were tested using semi-continuous culture and compared with studies on copper-induced changes in species composition of phytoplankton samples. Blue-green algae exhibit lower EC100-values than diatoms and Scenedesmus. The four tested strains of Microcystis aeruginosa showed different copper sensitivity. Four response types can be distinguished. 1. rapid biomass loss after copper application but subsequent growth recovery. 2. fluctuations of growth but no loss of biomass at sublethal concentrations 3. continuous recovery of growth rates after initially affected growth. 4. growth inhibition (dormancy) and recovery after inoculation into a copper-free medium. Twelve species of intertidal algae and molluscs from Ras Beirut, Lebanon have been investigated for their heavy metal content. Atomic absorption spectrophotometric analysis showed that the algae and molluscs concentrated similar levels of most metals. However, of the twelve organisms, Brachydontes variabilis had the highest copper, Patella coerulea and Colpomenia sinuosa had the highest iron, and Pinctada radiata had the highest zinc values with rather elevated cadmium. Cystoseira spinosa concentrated the lowest levels of zinc, and nickel was variable in all organisms.Seasonal comparisons of metal levels were also considered in three algae and three molluscs studied previously. The only signs of seasonal variation in the algae were with nickel and iron in Halimeda tuna and lead in Pterocladia pinnata. Both cadmium and lead were generally lowest in the spring samples of the algae. Lead and nickel concentrations in the molluscs were generally highest in the summer and lowest in the spring. Slight seasonal trends were seen with lead and iron in Brachydontes variabilis and lead in Monodonta turbinata.The lack of comparison data from the Mediterranean, particularly the eastern basin, makes it essential that studies of this nature be continued.  相似文献

选择乐安河—鄱阳湖湿地典型植物群落,采用重要值方法评价各样点植物群落特征并筛选出典型优势植物,通过室内理化测试分析不同生境中优势植物植株及其根区土壤中重金属Cu、Pb、Cd的含量;采用生物富集系数(BCF)方法评价不同优势植物对重金属Cu、Pb、Cd的富集特性。结果表明:研究区湿地植物以草本为主,在各样点共发现124种物种,包括蕨类植物2科2属2种,种子植物40科97属122种,并从中筛选出羊蹄、红蓼、鼠曲草、紫云英、苎麻等5种富集能力较强的优势植物;植物根区土壤中的Cu、Cd含量均超过土壤环境质量三级标准,而且Cu、Cd的最高含量分别为824.03、5.03 mg·kg-1;不同优势植物对Cu、Pb、Cd等3种重金属元素中的1种或2种表现出较强的富集能力,其中优势物种红蓼对Cu具有较强的富集能力,含Cu量最高为148.80 mg·kg-1,另一种优势物种鼠曲草对三种元素的生物富集系数均较高,且对Cd的最高富集含量为15.17 mg·kg-1,对Cd的生物富集系数最高值为19.14,高于其他植物10倍以上,鼠曲草对重金属Cd具有富集植物的基本特征,且对Cu和Cd具有共富集特征并具有较高的耐性,紫云英、羊蹄等对Cd的富集能力也较强。上述5种优势植物种群对鄱阳湖湿地Cu、Pb、Cd等重金属污染物的生态修复具有一定参考价值,可作为鄱阳湖湿地重金属污染修复植物的选择对象。  相似文献

Summary This study examines possible relationships between stress tolerance by marine algae and distributions of these species. The ability to recover photosynthetic activity following dehydration or temperature treatments was the assay used to evaluate stress tolerance, and Porphyra perforata, Rhodoglossum affine, Gelidium coulteri, and Smithora naiadum differed in thresholds of tolerance, even though plants were collected from low tidal sites.Limits of dehydration tolerance were well correlated with limits of tidal distribution for these species. Additionally, other high tidal species tolerated severe dehydration while subtidal and low tidal species were sensitive to dehydration. High tidal individuals of P. perforata were also more tolerant of dehydration than were low tidal thalli of P. perforata.Limits of high or low temperature tolerance were not well correlated with tidal elevation for any groups of algae studied. However, cold-tolerant species had more northerly extensions, and warm-tolerant species had more southerly distributions. Thus, differential tolerance to temperature extremes may be an important influence for latitudinal ranges of species.By comparing the experimentally determined thresholds of stress with distributions of species, we test the role of stress in influencing photosynthesis and ultimately distributions of marine algae.  相似文献

Herbivores are thought to achieve adequate nutrition by consuming numerous species of plants or by occasionally consuming animal tissue. Although active selection of diverse foods is common in nature, the relationship between diet mixing and consumer fitness is poorly understood, especially in marine environments. We studied the fitness-based consequences of dietary mixing in the sympatric amphipods Ampithoe marcuzzii, A. valida, Cymadusa compta, and Gammarus mucronatus by measuring survivorship, growth, and fecundity of these amphipods when they were offered single species of algae, a single animal food, a mixture of algal species, or a combination of algae and animal matter. For the more sedentary, tube-building amphipods A. marcuzzii, A. valida, and C. compta, fitness on mixed algal diets was matched by fitness on at least one of the monospecific algal diets, suggesting that they could benefit from preferential feeding on those algae in the field. The more mobile amphipod, G. mucronatus, survived and grew similarly on the mixed diets and on the filamentous brown alga Ectocarpus siliculosus. However, its fecundity was significantly higher when feeding on the algal and animal mixture than on Ectocarpus alone. Additionally, for G. mucronatus, fitness on mixed algae, mixed algae plus animal matter, and animal matter alone was equivalent, although female growth (but not gonad production) was slightly lower on animal matter alone than on the mixed algae combined with animal food. Thus the more mobile amphipod, G. mucronatus, was the only species able to perform well on animal food alone. In contrast, A. valida and C. compta experienced large negative effects when limited to consuming animal matter alone. For these two species, combining algae and animal matter did not enhance fitness over combining only algae. Fitness effects of specific algal diets showed some general similarities, but also considerable variance among the amphipods. For example, E. siliculosus was generally better food than other algae for all four amphipods, whereas Sargassum filipendula was generally poor. However, A. marcuzzii did not suffer negative effects of consuming only Sargassum. The red alga Polysiphonia sp. and the green alga Enteromorpha flexuosa decreased fitness in A. marcuzzii, C. compta, and G. mucronatus, but not A. valida, and the negative effects of Polysiphonia were considerably larger for A. marcuzzii than for the other amphipods. Our data show that nutritional requirements, even among related species (e.g., A. marcuzzii and A. valida), can be dramatically different. Diet mixing may benefit more mobile consumers like Gammarus that are better able to search for different foods, and may be less important for more sedentary herbivores like Ampithoe and Cymadusa that consume, and live in close association with, individual host plants. Summary Juvenile sea hares, Aplysia californica, utilize only the red algae Plocamium cartilagineum and Laurencia pacifica as host plants at Santa Catalina Island, CA. I tested three hypotheses which might account for this pattern of host choice: 1) A. californica specialize on the algae on which they grow best, 2) A. california specialize on algae from which they acquire secondary compounds that protect them from predators, and 3) A. californica specialize on certain algae in order to lower their encounter rates with predators. The results suggested that host range in the Aplysia californica system is affected by more than one factor. The first hypothesis was supported. A. californica of three size classes grew well on Plocamium, but could not grow at all on most other species of algae. Larger A. californica were able to grow on species of algae that smaller ones could not. The second hypothesis was also supported. Small A. californica grown on Plocamium were rich in terpenes. Small A. californica grown on Ulva sp. were terpene-free. Rock wrasses, Halichoeres semicinctus, were more likely to eat Ulva-fed A. californica than Plocamium-fed A. californica. Other fish and lobster, Panulirus interruptus, did not discriminate between the two groups. Kelp bass, Paralabrax clathratus, which were force-fed Ulva-fed A. californica regurgitated them less often, and after digesting them more completely, than did Paralabrax force-fed Plocamium-fed A. californica. The third hypothesis was rejected. A. californica located on Plocamium were not more cryptic to the opisthobranch Aglaja inermis (navanax), or to the pomacentrid fish, Hypsypops rubicundus, than were A. californica located on other algae. In addition, navanax, a specialist predator of opisthobranchs, was significantly more abundant on Plocamium than on other algae.  相似文献

In this study we used recent (2010) and herbarium material (1980) of six bryophyte species to assess long‐term atmospheric deposition in natural forested areas in northern Spain. For this purpose, tissue nitrogen and carbon content, as well as δ13C and δ15N signatures of samples of Hypnum cupressiforme, Polytrichastrum formosum, Leucobryum juniperoideum, Rhytidiadelphus loreus, Homalothecium lutescens and Diplophyllum albicans were analysed and comparisons made between years and species. In addition, the usefulness of each of the six species was evaluated. The range of values observed was similar to that in other studies carried out in rural areas. Significantly lower values were found in 2010 for N (H. cupressiforme), δ15N (R. loreus and D. albicans), C (R. loreus) and δ13C (all except L. juniperoideum). Our natural areas are thus now less influenced by atmospheric pollutants than they were, most probably due to changes in some traditional local activities. Differences were observed between species for all the four parameters studied, so different species must not be analysed together. Finally, R. loreus and H. lutescens seem to be good bioindicators, sensitive even with a few samples, although further studies are needed to corroborate their usefulness.  相似文献

Copper oxide nanomaterials were synthesized by a facile sustainable biological method using two plant species (Zanthoxylum armatum DC. and Berberis lycium Royle ). The formation of materials was confirmed by FT‐IR, ATR, UV‐visible, XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, TGA and PL. The antibacterial activity was evaluated by agar well diffusion method to ascertain the efficacy of plant species extract and extract derived copper oxide nanomaterials against six Gram‐positive bacteria namely Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus pyogenes, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Corynebacterium xerosis, Bacillus cereus and four Gram‐negative bacteria such as Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus vulgaris against the standard drug, Ciprofloxacin for Gram‐positive and Gentamicin for Gram‐negative bacteria, respectively. In both cases, copper oxide nanomaterials were found to be sensitive in all the bacterial species. Sensitivity of copper oxide nanomaterials shows an be higher as compared to plant species extract against different bacteria. Scavenging activity of plant extracts along with nanomaterials have been accessed using previously reported protocols employing ascorbic acid as standard. Scavenging activity of copper oxide nanomaterials shows an increase with increase in concentration. The biological activity (bactericidal and scavenging efficiency) of plant derived copper oxide nanomaterials revealed that these materials can be used as potent antimicrobial agent and DPPH scavengers in industrial as well as pharmacological fields.  相似文献
