A survey of recent and fossil zona-aperturate pollen grains within the angiosperms was undertaken. Zona-aperturate pollen (with complete ring-like apertures) has been evolved independently in several genera of basal angiosperm families (Nymphaeaceae, Eupomatiaceae, Annonaceae, Monimiaceae, Atherospermataceae) and monocots (Araceae, Iridaceae, Laxmanniaceae, Arecaceae, and Rapateaceae). The special case of the eudicot Limnanthes (Limnanthaceae) is discussed. New examples of recent and fossil fully zonate pollen are presented; a noteworthy new example are Scrophulariaceae, with Pedicularis; our fossil examples show affinities either to Nymphaeaceae, or Araceae, or Iridaceae, or cannot be related to an extant taxon. The zona-aperturate pollen grains differ in ornamentation and stratification mostly in the respect of the aperture areas, but sometimes also outside the aperture. The question of polarity is settled only for some taxa because of the frequent lack of tetrad observations. A ring-like aperture may divide the pollen grains in symmetric halves, or if running asymmetrically, divides the pollen grain in two more or less unequal halves; the presence of clearly unequal halves gives a strong argument to assume an equatorial ring in such cases where tetrad configurations were not available. The zona-aperturate condition may be a functional benefit in wet environments: while in dry pollen the apertural ring is completely closed, in wet or very moist realm it expands greatly, and the pollen tube can be formed quickly and everywhere in this area.  相似文献

Radiation of pollination systems in the Iridaceae of sub-Saharan Africa   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
BACKGROUND: Seventeen distinct pollination systems are known for genera of sub-Saharan African Iridaceae and recurrent shifts in pollination system have evolved in those with ten or more species. Pollination by long-tongued anthophorine bees foraging for nectar and coincidentally acquiring pollen on some part of their bodies is the inferred ancestral pollination strategy for most genera of the large subfamilies Iridoideae and Crocoideae and may be ancestral for the latter. Derived strategies include pollination by long-proboscid flies, large butterflies, night-flying hovering and settling moths, hopliine beetles and sunbirds. Bee pollination is diverse, with active pollen collection by female bees occurring in several genera, vibratile systems in a few and non-volatile oil as a reward in one species. Long-proboscid fly pollination, which is apparently restricted to southern Africa, includes four separate syndromes using different sets of flies and plant species in different parts of the subcontinent. Small numbers of species use bibionid flies, short-proboscid flies or wasps for their pollination; only about 2 % of species use multiple pollinators and can be described as generalists. SCOPE: Using pollination observations for 375 species and based on repeated patterns of floral attractants and rewards, we infer pollination mechanisms for an additional 610 species. Matching pollination system to phylogeny or what is known about species relationships based on shared derived features, we infer repeated shifts in pollination system in some genera, as frequently as one shift for every five or six species of southern African Babiana or Gladiolus. Specialized systems using pollinators of one pollination group, or even a single pollinator species are the rule in the family. Shifts in pollination system are more frequent in genera of Crocoideae that have bilaterally symmetric flowers and a perianth tube, features that promote adaptive radiation by facilitating precise shifts in pollen placement, in conjunction with changes in flower colour, scent and tube length. CONCLUSIONS: Diversity of pollination systems explains in part the huge species diversity of Iridaceae in sub-Saharan Africa, and permits species packing locally. Pollination shifts are, however, seen as playing a secondary role in speciation by promoting reproductive isolation in peripheral, ecologically distinct populations in areas of diverse topography, climate and soils. Pollination of Iridaceae in Eurasia and the New World, where the family is also well represented, is poorly studied but appears less diverse, although pollination by both pollen- and oil-collecting bees is frequent and bird pollination rare.  相似文献

Four New World genera are included in the tribe tigrideae of the Iridaceae. These genera, which have been the subject of recent systematic treatments [1–4], share many characteristics; e.g. a haploid complement of two large and 12 small chromosomes and bisulcate pollen grains. However, the taxonomic and phyletic relationships within and between these genera have been based strictly on floral morphology and may simply reflect the primary pollinators of these genera [4,5].The flavonoid chemistry of eight species in three of the four genera, Rigidella, Sessilanthera and Fosteria, was investigated as part of a systematic study of Tigrideae. Our results are summarized in Table 1 nad Fig. 1. Although a recurrent pattern of C-glycosylflavones and xanthones characterize the leaves of these taxa, each species exhibits a distinctive array of compounds. The same classes of compounds occur in other tribes of the Iridaceae: C-glycosylflavones occur in the Irideae [6,7], Cipureae, and Mariceae and xanthones in Irideae [6] and Sisyrinchieae [6].  相似文献

We assessed the pollen hydration, the pollen germination, and the stigma papilla penetration of CROCUS VERNUS subsp. VERNUS (Iridaceae) after 2 h fumigations with O (3), NO (2), and CO gases within humidified (90 - 100 % RH) box experiments. When the pollen and the pistil were separately fumigated, the pollen retained the capacity to emit a tube which penetrated papilla, and the stigma papillae retained the receptivity; when the pistils were first pollinated and then fumigated, the capacity of pollen to hydrate was not affected, but the germination was significantly reduced. The vulnerability to gases became evident at 0.3 ppm O (3), 0.2 ppm NO (2), and 0.5 ppm CO. The inhibition curves as a function of the gas concentrations were of an exponential type, and they saturated at 2 ppm NO (2), 25 ppm CO, and 0.5 ppm O (3), with germination percentages of 17 %, 27 %, and 60 %, respectively. Both the pollen germination and the papilla penetration were fully restored by prolonging for 60 - 90 min the incubation at 90 - 100 % RH, after the cessation of fumigations. The vulnerability of the pollen-papilla system is discussed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Early developmental events in microsporogenesis are known to play a role in pollen morphology: variation in cytokinesis type, cell wall formation, tetrad shape and aperture polarity are responsible for pollen aperture patterning. Despite the existence of other morphologies, monosulcate pollen is one of the most common aperture types in monocots, and is also considered as the ancestral condition in this group. It is known to occur from either a successive or a simultaneous cytokinesis. In the present study, the developmental sequence of microsporogenesis is investigated in several species of Asparagales that produce such monosulcate pollen, representing most families of this important monocot clade. METHODS: The developmental pathway of microsporogenesis was investigated using light transmission and epifluorescence microscopy for all species studied. Confocal microscopy was used to confirm centripetal cell plate formation. KEY RESULTS: Microsporogenesis is diverse in Asparagales, and most variation is generally found between families. It is confirmed that the whole higher Asparagales clade has a very conserved microsporogenesis, with a successive cytokinesis and centrifugal cell plate formation. Centripetal cell wall formation is described in Tecophilaeaceae and Iridaceae, a feature that had so far only been reported for eudicots. CONCLUSIONS: Monosulcate pollen can be obtained from several developmental pathways, leading thus to homoplasy in the monosulcate character state. Monosulcate pollen should not therefore be considered as the ancestral state unless it is produced through the ancestral developmental pathway. The question about the ancestral developmental pathway leading to monosulcy remains open.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to localise non‐specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs), obtained from Rosaceae (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) in pollen grains of taxonomically distant plants, such as Iridaceae (Aristea latifolia G.J. Lewis), Platanaceae (Platanus acerifolia (Aiton) Willd.) and Urticaceae (Parietaria judaica L.), in order to compare pollen and nsLTP diversity. A combination of transmission electron microscopy, immunocytochemical techniques, and rabbit specific antiserum against peach nsLTPs (Pru p 3) were used. Abundant labelling to Pru p 3‐like proteins was observed in the cytoplasm, walls and pollenkitt of A. latifolia pollen grains. The presence of nsLTPs associated with the pollenkitt proves that it takes part in the defence mechanism of pollen grains. The labelling was less intense in the cytoplasm and walls of P. acerifolia. Immuno‐stained gold particles were associated with the vacuoles, lipid inclusions, endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex. No significant labelling was found in the P. judaica pollen grains incubated with anti‐Pru p 3 polyclonal antibodies. These results indicate important variations in the nsLTPs of different pollen species. Consequently, no taxonomic relationship between pollen grains and nsLTPs could be established.  相似文献

The Pollen-stigma Interaction: Pollen-tube Penetration in Crocus   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
In a compatible pollination in Crocus, pollen tube tips enterthe stigma papillae after the enzymic erosion of the cuticle, and the tubes continue downward growth towards the ovary betweenthe cuticle and the underlying pectocellulosic wall. The cuticleof the receptive zone of the stigma papilla is chambered, thechambers containing a secretion accumulated during the maturationof the stigma. Pollen exudates contain various acid hydrolases, but are incapable alone of eroding stigma cutin. Furthermore, there is no penetration when the proteins of the wall-held stigmasecretions are degraded enzymically. These facts are taken toindicate that the pollen contributes a ‘cutinase’precursor which is activated by a factor or factors held inthe stigma secretion. Pollens of certain Cruciferae producetubes capable of penetrating the Crocus stigma cuticle, suggestingthat notwithstanding the taxonomic remoteness of Cruciferaeand Iridaceae the enzyme activation systems are quite similar.  相似文献

Abstract

Mature pollen of C. thomasii Ten. (Iridaceae) has been studied from a morphological and physiological point of view and compared to that of C. sativus L., C. thomasii pollen is roundish, with a 83 μm diameter and a 14% of anomalous grains. Percentage of the positive alcoholdehydrogenase (ADH +) pollen grains is about 90% whereas the in vitro germinated rate reaches 55%. Exine is homogeneously thickened (2.5 μm) with randomly distributed thinner zones and 5 μm thick intine. Cytoplasm of vegetative and generative cells is very rich of small and large smooth vesicles and vesicles coated by ribosomes. The generative cell shows a thin ondulated pectocellulosic wall. Its nucleus is intensely fluorescent after treatment with the 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) fluorochrome. Although many ultrastructural aspects of the C. thomasii pollen are common in C. sativus. L., C. thomasii pollen is smaller, more regularly structured and germinates in vivo and in vitro in higher percentage than that of C. sativus.  相似文献

Phylogenetic analyses of four plastid DNA regions, the rbcL exon, trnL intron, trnL-trnF intergenic spacer, and rps16 intron from each of 73 species in the African genus Moraea (Iridaceae: Irideae) including accessions of all major species clusters in the genus, show Moraea to be paraphyletic when Barnardiella, Galaxia, Hexaglottis, Homeria (all southern African), and Gynandriris (Eurasian as well) were recognized as separate genera. There are several small, isolated species clusters at the basal nodes of the tree that are all restricted to the winter-rainfall zone of southern Africa (the Greater Cape floral kingdom) and a few, highly derived, large species groups that have radiated extensively within the winter-rainfall zone. Mapping of floral traits shows that an Iris-type flower is ancestral in Moraea. Floral changes are associated with shifts in pollination systems, either from passive pollen deposition on long-tongued bees foraging for nectar to active pollen collection by female bees foraging for pollen, fly, or hopliine scarab beetle pollination. Dating the nodes of the phylogenetic tree using non-parametric rate smoothing with a calibration point derived from broad dating of the angiosperms indicates that the divergence between Moraea and its sister genus Ferraria occurred about 25 mya in the early Miocene. The early radiation of Moraea took place against a background of aridification and the spread of open habitats, such as desert, shrubland, and fynbos.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The coastal plain of Israel hosts the last few remaining populations of the endemic Iris atropurpurea (Iridaceae), a Red List species of high conservation priority. The flowers offer no nectar reward. Here the role of night-sheltering male solitary bees, honey-bees and female solitary bees as pollinators of I. atropurpurea is documented.

Methods

Breeding system, floral longevity, stigma receptivity, visitation rates, pollen loads, pollen deposition and removal and fruit- and seed-set were investigated.

Key Results

The main wild pollinators of this plant are male eucerine bees, and to a lesser extent, but with the potential to transfer pollen, female solitary bees. Honey-bees were found to be frequent diurnal visitors; they removed large quantities of pollen and were as effective as male sheltering bees at pollinating this species. The low density of pollen carried by male solitary bees was attributed to grooming activities, pollen displacement when bees aggregated together in flowers and pollen depletion by honey-bees. In the population free of honey-bee hives, male bees carried significantly more pollen grains on their bodies. Results from pollen analysis and pollen deposited on stigmas suggest that inadequate pollination may be an important factor limiting fruit-set. In the presence of honey-bees, eucerine bees were low removal–low deposition pollinators, whereas honey-bees were high removal–low deposition pollinators, because they removed large amounts into corbiculae and deposited relatively little onto receptive stigmas.

Conclusions

Even though overall, both bee taxa were equally effective pollinators, we suggest that honey-bees have the potential to reduce the amount of pollen available for plant reproduction, and to reduce the amount of resources available to solitary bee communities. The results of this study have potential implications for the conservation of this highly endangered plant species if hives are permitted inside reserves, where the bulk of Oncocyclus iris species are protected.  相似文献

Irises in the section Oncocyclus (Siems.) Baker ( IRIS: Iridaceae) grow throughout the Middle East and have large and dark-coloured flowers but no nectar reward available to flower visitors. Consequently, no reward-collecting pollinators have been observed visiting the flowers during daytime. The only visitors are solitary male bees ( Eucera spp.: Apidae) that enter the flowers at dusk and stay there overnight. Here we describe the mating system of Oncocyclus irises, and the role of night-sheltering male bees in their pollination system. Pollen viability in I. haynei on Mt. Gilboa was very high (>90%) throughout all floral life stages. Stigmas were receptive in buds and in open flowers, but not in older ones. Self-pollination yielded no fruits in three species, confirming complete self-incompatibility in Oncocyclus irises. On average, 1.9 flowers were visited by each male bee before it settled for the night in the last one. Moreover, Iris pollen was present on the dorsal side of 38.8% of males caught sheltering in flower models mounted near an I. atrofusca population, indicating that pollen is transferred between flowers by night-sheltering solitary male bees. We have surveyed 13 flowering populations of six Oncocyclus species for the presence of night-sheltering male bees as well as for fruit set. We found a positive correlation, indicating that sexual reproduction in Oncocyclus irises is dependent on night-sheltering solitary male bees. Based on their complete self-incompatibility, the absence of nectar-collecting visitors during the day, and the transfer of pollen grains by the night-sheltering solitary male bees, we conclude that fertilization of Oncocyclus irises is totally dependent on pollination by night-sheltering solitary male bees.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Hermodactylus tuberosus Mill. (Iridaceae) is a species with a very short style and a tricarpellar unilocular ovary. For ornamental purposes it is usually reproduced by means of tubers, although both vegetative and seed reproduction occur in nature. However, its capsules do not contain many seeds in comparison to the high number of ovules inside the ovary. To understand this conflicting process a study on H. tuberosus pollen-pistil interaction was carried out. Pollen viability was evaluated by different techniques. Germination rate was tested in vitro and in vivo after stigma, intrastylar and intraovarian pollinations. A high percentage of the pollen grains were found to be viable resulting in a high percentage of in vitro germination and a low rate of germination on the stigma. Indeed, many pollen tubes developed after intrastylar and intraovarian pollinations. Several anomalies characterized pollen germination and pollen tube growth in vitro and in vivo. Observations from field trials indicated that capsules were only produced from open or hand, cross- pollinated flowers, confirming that the plant is self- incompatible and not apomictic. In addition, all the mature capsules contained only a few mature seeds suggesting the existence of pre- and postzygotic seed set inhibition.  相似文献

Mating patterns and natural selection play important roles in determining whether genetic polymorphisms are maintained or lost. Here, we document an atypical population of Lapeirousia anceps (Iridaceae) with a bimodal distribution of floral‐tube length and investigate the reproductive mechanisms associated with this pattern of variation. Flowers were visited exclusively by the long‐proboscid fly Moegistorhynchus longirostris (Nemestrinidae), which exhibited a unimodal distribution of proboscis length and displayed a preference for long‐tubed phenotypes. Despite being visited by a single pollinator species, allozyme markers revealed significant genetic differentiation between open‐pollinated progeny of long‐ and short‐tubed phenotypes suggesting mating barriers between them. We obtained direct evidence for mating barriers between the floral‐tube phenotypes through observations of pollinator foraging, controlled hand pollinations and measurements of pollen competition and seed set. Intermediate tube‐length phenotypes produced fewer seeds in the field than either long‐ or short‐tubed phenotypes. Although floral‐tube length bimodality may not be a stable state over long timescales, reproductive barriers to mating and low ‘hybrid’ fitness have the potential to contribute to the maintenance of this state in the short term.  相似文献

Aim To analyse the relationships between potential natural vegetation, pollen and climate in order to improve the interpretation of fossil pollen records and provide the background for future quantitative palaeoclimatic reconstructions. Location Pampa grasslands of Argentina, between 33–41° S and 56–67° W. Methods Modern pollen data were obtained from a pollen data base developed by the Grupo de Investigación de Paleoecología y Palinología, Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, Argentina (143 surface samples and 17 pollen types). Analysis of pollen and climate data involved multivariate statistics (cluster analysis and principal components analysis), scatter diagrams, Pearson’s correlation and isopoll mapping. Results Vegetation patterns at regional scales (grasslands and xerophytic woodlands) and local scales (edaphic communities) were identified by cluster analysis of pollen surface samples. The main climatic variables that appear to constrain the vegetation distribution and abundance of taxa are mean annual precipitation, annual effective precipitation and summer temperature. Individual pollen types such as Chenopodiaceae, Apiaceae, Cyperaceae, Prosopis, Schinus, Condalia microphylla and other xerophytic taxa are good indicators of moisture regime. Many pollen types are significantly correlated with summer temperature. The modern vegetation–pollen–climate relationships vary in a broadly predictable manner, supporting the contention that fossil pollen assemblages can be related to particular climatic characteristics. Main conclusions An expanded suite of modern analogues facilitated new insights into vegetation–pollen–climate relationships at the regional scale in Pampa grasslands. Relationships between individual pollen types and climate are appraised at a regional scale and new modern analogues are presented. The results provide the basis for improved vegetation and climate reconstruction from fossil records of the study area.  相似文献

One inaperturate and 16 monosulcate pollen types are described from the latest Campanian to earliest Maastrichtian sediments of the Vilui basin, Siberia, using both light and scanning electron microscopy, and assigned systematically when possible to modern families or subfamilies. Despite their scant occurrence, the pollen grains show considerable diversity. Two new genera have been erected. Lasioideaecidites with two species, Lasioideaecidites hessei and Lasioideaecidites bogneri, represents the earliest record of the subfamily Lasioideae (Araceae). Aristolochiacidites with one species, Aristolochiacidites viluiensis, is assigned to the subfamily Aristolochioideae (Aristolochiaceae) and represents the first fossil pollen record of the family. A new species of Liliacidites, Liliacidites goldblattii, is closely similar to pollen of Isophysioideae (Iridaceae) and/or Doryanthaceae and is the first fossil evidence of the clade that includes these closely related families. A further nine new fossil species are described (Clavatipollenites timerdyakhensis, Liliacidites palaeofritillaria, Retimonocolpites longosucatus, R. microreticulatus, R. microrugulatus, R. lysichitonoides, R. chapmaniae, Monosulcites parvus and Arecipites tyungensis) and assigned to Chloranthaceae, Araceae (Orontioideae, ?Pothoideae), Liliaceae, ?Hypoxidaceae and Arecaceae. The Hydatellaceae (Nymphaeales) may also be present in the palynoflora of the Vilui Basin, represented by pollen similar to M. rivularis Braman from the Santonian to Campanian (Upper Cretaceous) Milk River Formation, Canada.  相似文献

In this study I documented the degree of specialization in the pollination systems of Burmeistera cyclostigmata and B. tenuiflora (Campanulaceae) to explore the potential role of floral isolation in the diversification of the genus. I asked which floral characteristics are important in specializing on either bat or hummingbird pollination, and whether overlap between these floral syndromes can exist. I examined nocturnal and diurnal pollen deposition, pollinator visitation rates, and single visit effectiveness and related them to intra- and interspecific variation in Burmeistera floral characteristics at Monteverde, Costa Rica. Bats and hummingbirds visited both Burmeistera species, and bats pollinated both species. Owing to differences in floral morphology, however, hummingbirds effectively pollinated only B. tenuiflora. The generalized pollination system of B. tenuiflora demonstrates that there can be overlap in the boundary between ornithophily and chiropterophily, and that nectar production and timing of anthesis do not serve as barriers between these syndromes. The high intraspecific variation in floral color from green to red or purple did not correlate with either nocturnal or diurnal pollen deposition. Degree of flower accessibility did affect pollination; nocturnal pollen deposition significantly decreased as flowers become more obstructed. In Burmeistera, floral morphology and accessibility appear to be the most important floral characteristics for specialization at the boundary between ornithophily and chiropterophily.  相似文献
