Abstract. The development of the genital apparatus is described for the echinoid Paracentrotus lividus. This apparatus derives from the aboral ring, an annular structure that includes an inconspicuous coelom and, in juveniles, the germinal rachis. The germinal epithelium grows out from the germinal rachis, and the gonadal wall and coelom in early (tubular) gonads share similarities with their equivalents in the aboral ring. The original germinal rachis regresses to form a genital cord one cell wide in late juveniles. A genital cord was observed in a few field-collected adult individuals (>40 mm test diameter).  相似文献

The population structure of the edible Atlanto-Mediterranean sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus is described by analysing sequence variation in a fragment of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I in 127 individuals from 12 localities across south-west Europe. The study revealed high levels of genetic diversity but low levels of genetic structure, suggesting a large degree of gene flow between populations and panmixis within each, the Mediterranean and Atlantic basins. However, we found significant genetic differentiation between the two basins probably due to restricted gene flow across the geographical boundary imposed by the area of the Strait of Gibraltar. Populations of P. lividus appeared to have experienced a recent demographic expansion in the late Pleistocene. We provide new evidence on the population structure of this commercial species, predicting a healthy stock of this sea urchin on the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts.  相似文献

1. Paracentrotus lividus hemolysin binds erythrocytes, zymosan particles, lipopolysaccharide and laminarin surfaces but not auto and allogeneic cell membranes. 2. The binding could, at least for erythrocytes, involve phospholipids and cholesterol. 3. The protease activity of the coelomic fluid is not related to hemolysis. 4. The finding that very low concentrations of Zn2+ inactivate the hemolysin suggests a possible regulative function of the ion in the hemolytic reaction. 5. Ultrastructural observations on rabbit erythrocyte membranes indicate that most likely the transmembrane pores are induced by the lytic molecules.  相似文献

The specific mechanism regulating reproduction in invertebrates is a field of topical interest which needs to be explored in detail considering also the intriguing possible comparison with vertebrates. In this paper levels of Testosterone (T) and Estradiol (E2) and their reciprocal ratios were determined in ovaries and testis of the echinoid model species Paracentrotus lividus during the year 2004 by taking into account a putative relationship between steroid levels and reproductive cycle. T levels appeared to significantly vary during male reproductive cycle, thus suggesting a possible role of this hormone in regulation of spermatogenesis as demonstrated for other echinoderms. E2 levels were lower in males with respect to females; consequently E2 involvement in oogenesis is hypothesized. In parallel with steroid levels evaluation, variations in P450-aromatase activity and its possible role on regulation of gametogenesis were also considered. Clear correlations between steroid levels and gonad index (GI), as well as between GI and reproductive cycle were not detected, suggesting that GI alone is not a reliable parameter in describing the reproductive status of the gonads. Altogether the results obtained so far confirm the presence of a relationship between steroid levels and reproductive cycle as suggested by previous results on different echinoderm species.  相似文献

Sea urchins are common inhabitants of wave-swept shores. To withstand the action of waves, they rely on highly specialized independent adhesive organs, the adoral tube feet. The latter are extremely well-designed for temporary adhesion being composed by two functional subunits: (1) an apical disc that produces an adhesive secretion to fasten the sea urchin to the substratum, as well as a deadhesive secretion to allow the animal to move and (2) a stem that bears the tensions placed on the animal by hydrodynamism. Despite their technological potential for the development of new biomimetic underwater adhesives, very little is known about the biochemical composition of sea urchin adhesives. A characterization of sea urchin adhesives is presented using footprints. The latter contain inorganic residues (45.5%), proteins (6.4%), neutral sugars (1.2%), and lipids (2.5%). Moreover, the amino acid composition of the soluble protein fraction revealed a bias toward six amino acids: glycine, alanine, valine, serine, threonine, and asparagine/aspartic acid, which comprise 56.8% of the total residues. In addition, it also presents higher levels of proline (6.8%) and half-cystine (2.6%) than average eukaryotic proteins. Footprint insolubility was partially overcome using strong denaturing and reducing buffers, enabling the visualization of 13 proteins by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The conjugation of mass spectrometry with homology–database search allowed the identification of six proteins: alpha and beta tubulin, actin, and histones H2B, H3, H2A, and H4, whose location and function in the adhesive are discussed but require further investigation. For the remaining unidentified proteins, five de novo-generated peptide sequences were found that were not present in the available protein databases, suggesting that they might be novel or modified proteins.  相似文献

The reproductive state of six populations of the commercial sea urchin P. lividus was investigated. Specimens were sampled monthly from six sites of southern Spain. The development of the gonad during the period of study was measured using histological methods and categorised by four stages for females and two for male specimens. A Gonadosomatic Index was also established. The six populations exhibited similar reproductive patterns, having mature gonads during almost all months while reconstitution and spent were present mainly in autumn. The population from Sancti Petri had the highest Gonadosomatic Index value. Higher food availability may explain this difference.  相似文献

Phylogeographical analysis of Paracentrotus lividus was carried out by means of sequencing the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1143 bp) of 260 individuals collected at 22 Mediterranean and four Atlantic localities. Against a background of high haplotype diversity and shallow genetic structuring, we observed significant genetic divergence between the Adriatic Sea and the rest of the Mediterranean, as well as between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic sample groups. Furthermore, on the largest spatial scale, isolation by distance was detected. Three main haplogroups were identified by network and Bayesian assignment analyses. The relative proportions of haplogroups were different in the four regions considered, with the exception of Western and Eastern Mediterranean that showed a similar pattern. This result together with the outcome of Snn statistics, analysis of molecular variance and network analyses allowed to identify three weakly differentiated populations corresponding to the Atlantic, Western + Eastern Mediterranean, and Adriatic seas. Analyses of mismatch distribution and neutrality tests were consistent with the presence of genetic structuring and past demographic expansion(s). From a fisheries perspective, the results obtained in the present study are consistent with genetic sustainability of current exploitation; local depleted stocks are recurrently replenished by recruits that may have originated from nonharvested areas. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 910–923.  相似文献

The compass depressors (CDs) of the sea-urchin lantern are ligaments consisting mainly of discontinuous collagen fibrils associated with a small population of myocytes. They are mutable collagenous structures, which can change their mechanical properties rapidly and reversibly under nervous control. The aims of this investigation were to characterise the baseline (i.e. unmanipulated) static mechanical properties of the CDs of Paracentrotus lividus by means of creep tests and incremental force-extension tests, and to determine the effects on their mechanical behaviour of a range of agents. Under constant load the CDs exhibited a three-phase creep curve, the mean coefficient of viscosity being 561±365 MPa.s. The stress-strain curve showed toe, linear and yield regions; the mean strain at the toe-linear inflection was 0.86±0.61; the mean Young’s modulus was 18.62±10.30 MPa; and the mean tensile strength was 8.14±5.73 MPa. Hyaluronidase from Streptomyces hyalurolyticus had no effect on creep behaviour, whilst chondroitinase ABC prolonged primary creep but had no effect on secondary creep or on any force-extension parameters; it thus appears that neither hyaluronic acid nor sulphated glycosaminoglycans have an interfibrillar load transfer function in the CD. Acetylcholine, the muscarinic agonists arecoline and methacholine, and the nicotinic agonists nicotine and 1-[1-(3,4-dimethyl-phenyl)-ethyl]-piperazine produced an abrupt increase in CD viscosity; the CDs were not differentially sensitive to muscarinic or nicotinic agonists. CDs showed either no, or no consistent, response to adrenaline, L-glutamic acid, 5-hydroxytryptamine and γ-aminobutyric acid. Synthetic echinoid tensilin-like protein had a weak and inconsistent stiffening effect, indicating that, in contrast to holothurian tensilins, the echinoid molecule may not be involved in the regulation of collagenous tissue tensility. We compare in detail the mechanical behaviour of the CD with that of mammalian tendon and highlight its potential as a model system for investigating poorly understood aspects of the ontogeny and phylogeny of vertebrate collagenous tissues.  相似文献

The plumula is enclosed by a single layer of epithelial cells. There are two types of odontoblasts: syncytial and free odontoblasts. Syncytial odontoblasts are arranged linearly on the abaxial side and have a highly active Golgi complex, rough endoplasmic reticulum, large and round mitochondria, and small coated vesicles indicative of a high level of secretory activity. Free odontoblasts cluster on the adaxial side and have patchy chromatin and little cytoplasm. The free odontoblasts migrate to the abaxial side, where their structure changes to that of syncytial odontoblasts. Calcareous deposits are formed intracellularly by syncytial odontoblasts within two membranes: an outer plasma membrane and an inner vacuolar membrane. The vacuolar membrane has organic particles on the surface of the membrane. There is no trace of organic matter within the calcareous deposit. Fibroblasts are located on the adaxial side. Collagen fibers are located primarily on the adaxial side adjacent to the calcareous depositing membranes and between free odontoblasts, but they are not located in the deposits. Collagen fibers may play a role in cell migration and thus in calcification. The morphological changes of the plumulae are closely related to calcification.  相似文献

The jaw apparatus, or lantern, of sea-urchins contains five pairs of retractor and protractor muscles which are responsible for lantern displacement. Using intact retractor or protractor groups, the force-length relations of these muscles were compared in two taxonomically distant species, Paracentrotus lividus and Stylocidaris affinis. The total contractile forces generated by the muscles can be resolved into vertical and horizontal components. It was found that the vertical component of the retractors is maximal at a lantern position which is significantly lower (i.e. more protruded) in Paracentrotus than in Stylocidaris. Total forces generated by the retractors were in both species maximal at or above the lantern `resting positions'. In Paracentrotus alone, the total force-displacement curves tended to be bimodal. It is hypothesized that the retractors of Paracentrotus contain two populations of muscle fibres, one adapted for jaw opening and one for lantern retraction. No significant differences in the properties of the protractors of the two species could be identified. The lantern of Paracentrotus is more mobile than that of Stylocidaris and is able to exploit a wider range of food sources. The aim of this study was to analyze male and female gonad fatty acids of two sea urchin species, Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula, from the south coast of Spain. Additionally, we investigated possible differences between two locations. The ovaries of both species showed higher percentages of 14:0, 16:0, 16:1n-7, 18:2n-6, 18:3n-3 and 18:4n-3 than testes and lower levels of 18:0, 22:1n-9, 20:4n-6 and 22:5n-3. In P. lividus but not in A. lixula, the level of 20:5n-3 was higher in testes than in ovaries. These differences between sexes probably indicate different requirements of males and females during gametogenesis although the presence of a large number of gametes in the mature gonad may also have influences on fatty acid composition. Significant differences in gonad fatty acid profiles where also found when individuals of P. lividus collected at a location of the Mediterranean region were compared with specimens collected at the Atlantic coast. The most remarkable changes were the lower levels of 14:0, 18:1n-7, 20:1n-9, 20:4n-6 and 22:4n-6 and the higher values of 20:1n-11, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 found in males and females of the Mediterranean specimens compared to those of the Atlantic coast. The embryos of the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus are capable of surviving chronic exposure to inorganic sodium phosphate and organic triethyl phosphate concentrations as high as 6 and 1000 mg l(-1) seawater, respectively. However, chronic exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of these phosphates may cause arrested or abnormal embryonic development. We measured fertilization success and percentages of normal, arrested and abnormal embryos exposed to low, medium and high sub-lethal concentrations of inorganic and organic phosphate. Fertilization success was significantly reduced in all phosphate treatments. After attaining the 4-cell stage, embryos exposed to the highest phosphate concentrations displayed arrested development. Percentages of abnormally developing embryos showed a strong concentration dose-response with a significant increase in abnormal embryonic development with increasing phosphate concentration. Overall, these results indicate that the gametes and embryos of L. variegatus may provide a rapid and sensitive model bioassay for the evaluation of phosphate pollutants in marine systems. Our findings also indicate that shallow-water populations of L. variegatus spawning in areas subjected to inorganic and organic phosphate pollutants may suffer detrimental effects on fertilization and embryonic development.  相似文献

The echinoid fauna of the Gulf of Mexico collected during three research cruises (20-1260 m depth) was surveyed from samples were taken at 43 stations. A total of 190 individuals were identified (eight orders, 11 families, 15 genera and 18 species). Six species are new records for the Gulf of Mexico: Stylocidaris lineata, Phormosoma placenta placenta, Plesiodiadema antillarum, Plethotaenia spatangoides, Brissopsis atlantica and Hypselaster limicolus. This adds to the little information available on the echinoid fauna of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche and Yucatan states in Mexico.  相似文献

Artificial agarose foods containing either starch, glycogen, carragheenan, alginate, casein, gelatin, albumin, or peptones at a concentration of 1% dry weight were not phagostimulatory. Artificial foods containing sugars, especially galactose, at a concentration of 0.005 M were phagostimulatory. Of the common amino acids, only L‐phenylalanine was phagostimulatory at this concentration. The initiation of feeding postures (movement of the spines, tube feet, peristome, and Aristotle's lantern) of Lytechinus variegatus was little affected by the concentration of plant extracts. Many aspects of this behavior were attributable to physical rather than chemical stimulation. Feeding rates of L. variegatus upon artificial agarose foods containing either Thalassia testudinum or Gracilaria verrucosa were directly dependent upon plant tissue concentration. All artificial agarose food‐items were initially moved to the mouth and fed upon, however the time spent feeding was directly dependent upon plant type and tissue concentration. Retention of the artificial food‐items upon the test after feeding was not influenced by plant type or tissue concentration. Differences in consumption of foods by L. variegatus are determined by the degree of persistence in feeding upon encountered items and not be selection before initiating feeding or by retention of food‐items for subsequent feedings.  相似文献

Thin sections, lanthanum tracer and the freeze-fracture technique revealed the presence of different types of cell junctions in early sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus) embryos. During the first four cleavage cycles, which are characterized by synchrony of cell division, sister blastomeres were connected only by intercellular bridges, formed as a result of incomplete cytokinesis; no trace of other junctions was found at these stages. From the 16-cell stage onwards, septate junctions and gap junctions began to appear between blastomeres. It is postulated that cell-cell interactions may provide a mechanism for the propagation of signals necessary for the coordination of cell proliferation and differentiation.  相似文献

 The perimetamorphic period in Paracentrotus lividus lasts for 8–12 days. It starts from the acquisition of larval competence, includes the change in form (metamorphosis) and the endotrophic postlarval life, and stops with the appearance of the exotrophic juvenile. All major postlarval appendages already occur in competent larvae being either grouped into the echinoid rudiment (terminal plates, early spines and primary podia) or scattered within the larval integument (genital plates and sessile pedicellariae). Competent larvae show particular behaviour which brings them close to the substratum. The latter is tested by primary podia protruding through the vestibular aperture of the larva. Primary podia are sensory–secretory appendages that are deprived ampullae. They are able to adhere to the substratum in order to allow evagination of the echinoid rudiment (i.e. metamorphosis) and substatum adhesion of the postlarva. Particular spines are borne by the postlarva; these are multifid non-mobile appendages forming a kind of protective armour. Like those of the larva, all characteristic structures of the postlarva (primary podia, multified spines and sessile pedicellariae) are transitory and regress either at the end of postlarval life (primary podia) or during early juvenile life (multifid spines and sessile pedicellariae). Other appendages that develop during postlarval life (i.e. podia with ampulla, point-tipped spines and sphaeridiae) are similar to those borne by the adults and become functional when the individual enters its juvenile life. Thus, the perimetamorphic period appears to be a fully fledged period in the life-cycle of P. lividus, and presumably in the life-cycle of any other sea-urchin species.
