Blue Manakin Chiroxiphia caudata (Pipridae) has a lek mating system in which males cooperate in teams of two or more individuals for courtship displays to females. Males ascend through a dominance hierarchy to assume the rank of alpha male. Only alpha males copulate with females. In this study, we describe the ascension of a male to the alpha rank following the disappearance of the previous alpha male. The study was conducted in the seasonal Atlantic Forest of Southern Brazil. We observed nine banded males at two adjacent leks. The gamma male at the more successful lek also acted as an alpha male at a less successful lek 314 m away. Upon the disappearance of the alpha male at the more successful lek, the gamma gave up his alpha rank at the less successful lek and ascended to the alpha rank at the more successful lek, bypassing the beta male. Although a previous study suggests a strictly linear dominance hierarchy in C. caudata, with beta male ascending to alpha status, our results suggest that the rising to become the alpha male may be a more flexible and dynamic process than previously reported.  相似文献

Mating system, social structure and reproductive behaviour of the gobiid fish Trimma okinawae were studied at Akamizu, Kagoshima, Japan. Mating system of this species is polygyny. There were two types of habitat-related distribution patterns of male and female home ranges: females have home ranges outside a small territory of the male; female home ranges are covered by male territory. Spawnings take place with a cycle of four to five days during the spawning season of June to Sept. In the morning of the day of spawning, males stay at the spawning sites. Females visit the site and spawn with the male. On days between spawnings males exhibit courtship displays at female home ranges. Higher reproductive success is not connected with frequency of such courting of the male, but with male size. The largest female of a social unit changes into a male when the dominant male is removed, which shows that T. okinawae is a hermaphrodite.  相似文献

In many mammalian species, females compete with each other for food and space to raise offspring, while males compete with each other for access to females. Few studies have examined the factors which limit male range sizes or the degree of overlap between male ranges. We deduced four possible responses of the range -sizes of non-territorial male small mammals to increasing population density and/or levels of forage abundance. These were: (1) male range sizes might remain the same irrespective of population density; (2) at high population densities males may become territorial, and their ranges small and non-overlapping; (3) at high forage abundance/population densities, males' ranges may become smaller but remain intra-sexually overlapping; (4) at high forage abundance, male range sizes may increase. We examined the relationship between population density, range lengths and range overlaps and body weights of both sexes in a comparative study of three populations of water voles Arvicola terrestris . Male range sizes were smaller at higher population densities, but their ranges remained both inter- and intra-sexually overlapping. Heavier males had larger ranges than did lighter males at all sites. These results comply with what would be expected if male range sizes were at least partially restricted by the number of ranges of other individuals with which they overlapped. Although we could not discount the hypothesis that forage abundance may also have had a direct effect on male range sizes, our results implied that male range sizes were at least partially determined by social factors.  相似文献

Previous studies demonstrating mate choice copying effects among females in non-human species have led many researchers to propose that social transmission of mate preferences may influence sexual selection for male traits. Although it has been suggested that social transmission may also influence mate preferences in humans, there is little empirical support for such effects. Here, we show that observing other women with smiling (i.e. positive) expressions looking at male faces increased women's preferences for those men to a greater extent than did observing women with neutral (i.e. relatively negative) expressions looking at male faces. By contrast, the reverse was true for male participants (i.e. observing women with neutral expressions looking at male faces increased male participant's preferences for those men to a greater extent than did observing women smiling at male faces). This latter finding suggests that within-sex competition promotes negative attitudes among men towards other men who are the target of positive social interest from women. Our findings demonstrate that social transmission of face preferences influences judgments of men's attractiveness, potentially demonstrating a mechanism for social transmission of mate preferences.  相似文献

The male leadership of a troop of rhesus living at the foot of the Kumaon foothills of India was studied from January to December of 1965. The troop, inhabiting a region of fields and forests, varied in size from a maximum of 20 after the birth season to a minimum of 14 in December during the breeding season. The troop initially contained two adult males with the occasional presence of a third, more peripheral male. This third male disappeared in March and was perhaps identical with the male who began to appear in August and succeeded in displacing the dominant male from the troop. The second initial male succeeded to the dominant position in September. During the breeding season various extra-troop males followed and occasionally penetrated the troop. The second male had difficulty in maintaining his position against one of these, who had perhaps been the peripheral male at the beginning of 1965.  相似文献

When female voles were allowed contact with the stud male for only 1 h at the time of mating, 55% exhibited pregnancy failure when exposed to a strange male 48 h later. When females were made psuedopregnant by hormone treatment and vaginal stimulation (i.e. no stud male involved), 87% exhibited luteal failure when exposed to a strange male. It is suggested that the characteristics of the stud male are rapidly imprinted upon the female at the time of mating and that this imprinting is important in preventing the female showing a blocking response to this male upon any subsequent exposure.  相似文献

Scent marks are relatively long-lived signals that can be perceived by conspecifics when the producer is absent. Therefore, it is often not obvious to whom the signal is directed. In daytime roosts of the polygynous greater sac-winged bat, males scent mark territories with facial gland secretions. Territories are a valuable resource for males, as they offer exclusive courtship opportunities, which results in increased male reproductive success and, consequently, increased male–male competition over territories. The information encoded in male scent marks could, therefore, be either directed at females as part of an olfactory courtship display or at male competitors as part of territorial behaviour. We expected territorial males to scent mark in the morning, shortly before females return to the territory and close to female roosting sites, if scent marks are directed at females as part of the courtship display. And we expected harem males to scent mark at the territory boundaries, where male–male encounters are most likely to occur, if scent marks are directed at male competitors. We found that males marked more frequently in the afternoon, at a time when all females have already left the territory, and harem males marked at the territory boundaries and not inside their territory in the area where females roost. At boundaries males fan volatiles from specialised wing sacs towards competitors outside the territory. Scent marking of male Saccopteryx bilineata might therefore be congruent with the assessment-hypothesis, which states that scent marks offer intruders the possibility to make an olfactory assessment of the territory owner without direct physical interaction. Thus, scent marks of male S. bilineata are most likely influenced by male–male competition and not by female choice.  相似文献

Between 30 and 40 days of age, female bank voles were kept singly, in female pairs, separated from an adult male by a wire mesh, or paired with a vasectomized male. At Day 40 they were paired with adult intact males. Fertility at the first mating was low (22-25%), but if the females had previously mated with the vasectomized male fertility of the subsequent mating with the intact male was significantly increased (63%). Sterile matings therefore had a priming effect on the females, and could be important for the development of puberty in wild females. Only 55-59% of the females without contact with males between Days 30 and 40 mated with the fertile male. Contact with a male through a wire mesh increased the proportion to 80% and co-habitation with a vasectomized male to 94%. In the last group, mating also occurred at a younger age.  相似文献

Using three mating-treatment groups–pairing with a male for life, pairing with a male from adult emergence to first oviposition, and no pairing (virgin)–of Dysdercus cardinalis females in a laboratory study, the following results were obtained. Most of the virgin females did not lay eggs; those that did oviposited for the first time at a considerably older age than females in the other two groups. In a lifetime, females pairing with a male for life and those pairing with a male up to first oviposition produced essentially the same number of eggs, and this was more than 3.5 times the number of eggs laid by a virgin female. Virgin females produced an average of 1.3 clutches in a lifetime, compared with about 4.5 clutches produced by females in the other two groups. Reproductive span was significantly shorter, and fecundity per day of reproductive span significantly greater, for females pairing with males for life than for those pairing with a male up to first oviposition. Age at death was significantly different amongst females in different mating-treatment groups. Virgin females had the longest life, followed by females pairing with a male up to first oviposition and females pairing with a male for life, in that order. There was a positive correlation between lifetime gross reproduction and age at death for females pairing with a male for life. There was no relationship between these two characters for females pairing with a male up to first oviposition. Both females pairing with a male for life and those pairing with a male to first oviposition exhibited a significant inverse relationship between fecundity per day and age at death. The results obtained indicate that (1) mating is a prerequisite for normal gonadal activity in Dysdercus cardinalis , and (2) repetitive mating increases the rate of reproduction. This would reduce the mean age of parenthood which is inversely related to the intrinsic rate of increase.

Mathematical models predict that to maintain androdioecious populations, males must have at least twice the fitness of male function in hermaphrodites. To understand how androdioecy is maintained in Laguncularia racemosa (white mangrove), outcrossing, inbreeding depression, and relative male fitness were estimated in two androdioecious populations and one hermaphroditic population. Outcrossing was estimated based on length of pollinator foraging bout and pollen carryover assumptions. Inbreeding depression was measured at three life stages: fruit set, seedling emergence, and seedling survivorship. The relative fitnesses of males and the male component of hermaphrodites were compared at these three stages and at the pollen production stage. Male frequency predictions generated by Lloyd's model were compared with observed frequencies in two androdioecious subpopulations. Outcrossing estimates were moderate for all populations (0.29-0.66). Inbreeding depression varied among populations (-0.03-0.86), but the strength of inbreeding depression did not increase with male frequency. Males produced significantly more flowers/inflorescence than hermaphrodites, but pollen production/flower did not differ. Male and hermaphroditic progeny did not differ significantly at other life stages. Populations of white mangrove with male plants were functionally androdioecious. Lloyd's model accurately predicted male frequency in one androdioecious subpopulation, but underestimated male frequency in the second subpopulation.  相似文献

Operational sex ratio (OSR, the ratio of sexually active males to fertilizable females at a given time and location) affected male behaviour in the flagfish Jordanella floridae . When OSR was male biased, males spent (1) more time at their nests and (2) more time fanning prior to receiving eggs. Pre-mating fanning has previously been correlated with male mating success and is hypothesized to be used in female choice in this population. Thus, these results suggest that on average, male flagfish invest more time in behaviour associated with female choice when there are relatively more male competitors. The OSR also affected the frequency of male aggression, and specifically male aggression towards females was more frequent at female-biased OSR treatments. The observed patterns were dependent upon the direction of OSR bias ( i.e. unbiased, male biased and female biased), and in some cases the intensity of the OSR bias affected the patterns of behaviour. These findings suggest that experimentally detecting effects of OSR is sensitive to the specific OSR values considered, and highlight the importance of considering a range of OSR values in future studies.  相似文献

Feather and skin pecking leading to feather loss and tissue damage is a welfare problem in commercial turkeys. A factorial experiment was designed to compare a line of unselected turkeys that previously did not exhibit this behaviour with a genetically selected male line with a propensity for damaging pecking. We also compared the time budgets of male and female turkeys from the two lines at 3, 6 and 9 weeks of age and at different times of the day. Damaging feather pecking occurred in 32% of male and 15% of female male line turkeys but was not observed in the traditional line. Time budgets of males and females were similar. Preening increased and resting, feeding and general pecking declined with age. Resting was higher in the afternoon than in the morning and male line turkeys were observed resting more often than traditional turkeys at 3 and 6 weeks. Traditional turkeys displayed more gentle feather pecks than male line poults at 9 weeks. Male turkeys of both lines showed more strong feather pecks and pulls at 3 weeks whereas female turkeys showed more at 9 weeks of age. The frequency of strong feather pulls recorded electronically increased with age but was not related to mortality. It is suggested that damaging feather pecking in turkeys may be the result of vigorous investigative pecking.  相似文献

The evolution of female mate choice, broadly defined to include any female behaviour or morphology which biases matings towards certain male phenotypes, is traditionally thought to result from direct or indirect benefits which females acquire when mating with preferred males. In contrast, new models have shown that female mate choice can be generated by sexual conflict, where preferred males may cause a fitness depression in females. Several studies have shown that female Drosophila melanogaster bias matings towards large males. Here, we use male size as a proxy for male attractiveness and test how female fitness is affected by reproducing with large or small males, under two different male densities. Females housed with large males had reduced lifespan and aged at an accelerated rate compared with females housed with small males, and increased male density depressed female fitness further. These fitness differences were due to effects on several different fitness components. Female fitness covaried negatively with male courtship rate, which suggests a cost of courtship. Mating rate increased with male size, whereas female fitness peaked at an intermediate mating rate. Our results suggest that female mate choice in D. melanogaster is, at least in part, a by-product of sexual conflict over the mating rate.  相似文献

We investigated the mechanisms of sexual selection in the common dung fly Sepsis cynipsea and how these affect selection on body size at the population level. Because of the presumed costs associated with mating, we predicted that there would be a decrease in the general reluctance of females to mate with any particular male at higher male densities at the mating site, a fresh cow pat, resulting in indirect female choice and a decrease in the strength of sexual selection. In contrast, classical direct female choice and male‐male competition should result in increased selection intensities because more opportunities for choice and competition exist at higher densities. Female reluctance to mate and female assessment of males are expressed in prominent female behaviour to repel mates in several insect species, including S. cynipsea. Laboratory pair‐wise choice experiments showed that large males were more likely to obtain copulations, which also ensued more promptly, suggesting female assessment of male quality (direct female choice). There was a basic influence of male activity but little further effect of male scramble competition on the outcome of mating. Another laboratory experiment showed a decrease in female shaking duration per male, associated with an asymptote in the shaking duration per female, as male density and harassment increased, but did not show the increase in mating frequency predicted by the female reluctance hypothesis. A study estimating sexual selection differentials in the field showed that directional selection for larger males was present overall and was negatively related to seasonally mediated variation in male density. Our study suggests that direct female choice in combination with indirect female choice (due to an interaction of female reluctance to mate and male persistence) is most consistent with the behavioural and selection patterns observed in S. cynipsea, but male effects cannot be definitively excluded.  相似文献

The social behavior pattern of a solitary male at Koshima was studied by means of radio-telemetry. The relationship between the solitary males and the troop was estimated from radio-tracking data of the former's location and movement, and by direct observation of the latter at each corresponding hour. For most of day, the solitary male stayed within a distance of about 20 to 150 m from the central part of the troop, occasionally approaching it. His movement also was synchronized with that of the troop. For two nights, the solitary male slept at places which were about 200 m from the sleeping sites of the troop and faced them across the beach. The relationship between the solitary male and the troop did not seem to be strongly antagonistic. It can be assumed that the solitary male was moving according to certain pre-determined relationships or social contacts with the troop. The example of this solitary male shows the existence of the solitary male that follows and maintains contact with the troop, even outside the copulatory season. This study was sponsored by Scientific Research Grant No. 91620 of the Ministry of Education to the Japan Monkey Centre.  相似文献

Theory predicts that when individuals live in groups or colonies, male–male aggression peaks at intermediate levels of local average relatedness. Assuming that aggression is costly and directed toward nonrelatives and that competition for reproduction acts within the colony, benefits of aggressive behavior are maximized in colonies with a mix of related and unrelated competitors because aggression hurts nonkin often, thereby favoring reproduction of kin. This leads to a dome‐shaped relation between male–male aggression and average relatedness. This prediction has been tested with bacteria in the laboratory, but not with organisms in the field. We study how male–male aggression varies with relatedness in the social spider mite Stigmaeopsis miscanthi. We sampled 25 populations across a wide geographic range between Taiwan and Japan, representing a gradient of high to low within‐population relatedness. For each population the weaponry of males was measured as the length of the first pair of legs, and male–male aggression was tested by placing pairs of nonsibling males together and scoring the frequency of male death over a given period. As these two morphological and behavioral variables correlate strongly, they both reflect the intensity of male–male conflict. Our data on the social spider mite show that male–male aggression as well as weapon size strongly peak at intermediate, average relatedness, thereby confirming theoretical predictions.  相似文献

Based on 69 scanned Chinese male subjects and 25 Caucasian male subjects, the present study showed that the volume height index (VHI) is the most important visual cue to male body attractiveness of young Chinese viewers among the many body parameters examined in the study. VHI alone can explain ca. 73% of the variance of male body attractiveness ratings. The effect of VHI can be fitted with two half bell-shaped exponential curves with an optimal VHI at 17.6 l m(-2) and 18.0 l m(-2) for female raters and male raters, respectively. In addition to VHI, other body parameters or ratios can have small, but significant effects on male body attractiveness. Body proportions associated with fitness will enhance male body attractiveness. It was also found that there is an optimal waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) at 0.8 and deviations from this optimal WHR reduce male body attractiveness.  相似文献
