The LAMS™ database stores data on a colony of breeding animals. Forms are hierarchial and show details of internal codes, matings, litters, and offspring. The identifier given to each animal can be subdivided as such. Each form shows an abbreviated list of the related data from the form one level down, and some special fields, when double-clicked, cause the related record to be displayed. The print button allows the user to print the current record and its related records. Other buttons on each form allow the user to amend, delete, find, and add records within certain rules. User-defined lists are created to allow the selection of various characteristics during data entry. The offspring form contains a section where the user can define the label of a comment and/or a text field. This name is then always subsequently available as an option in a list of user-defined labels. Reports are available for tailtipping dates (if applicable) and calculation of genetic ratios. A queryform allows the user to filter the records in the offspring form to the criteria specified, and a display of the actual query submitted is shown. An integrated HELP is available. The LAMS™ database is available at http://www.hgu.mrc.ac.uk/Softdata/Lams Received: 27 April 1998 / Accepted: 9 November 1998  相似文献

Since its publication in 1996, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (National Research Council, Washington DC, National Academy Press) has become a primary source of information for institutional animal care and use committees (IACUCs) and research facility managers. In the ensuing years, recommendations relating to laboratory animal care have evolved in response to new scientific information and use of new technology such as ventilated caging. In this article, recent publications are examined to determine the potential impact of new scientific evidence on current practices for the housing and care of laboratory rodents. The discussion points out recent advances in technology and new knowledge of the conditions for the housing of various laboratory rodents, including cage space, single versus group housing, ventilated caging systems, thermoregulation, bedding materials, and enrichment. This new information is provided to aid IACUCs and facility managers in making decisions regarding the housing and care of laboratory rodents.  相似文献

Ozone resistance of spores of 2 strains of Bacillus isolated from laboratory animals was examined. Each of 0.02 ml of phosphate-buffered saline at pH 7.0 containing 10(6) Bacillus spores was dropped onto sterilized filter strips, wood chip bedding, pellets of diet, cloth pieces and stainless steel plates. After drying at room temperature, the test materials were exposed to ozone gas of different concentrations at 90% RH. Exposure to 200ppm ozone for 6 hours was sufficient to kill spores in filter strips, but a little higher concentration or a little longer period of ozone fumigation was necessary for sterilization of wood chips, cotton cloth pieces and steel plates. The present results indicated that 600ppm ozone fumigation for 6 hours might be effective for routine sterilization of cages, wood bedding, working clothes and other materials used in laboratory animal facilities. However, exposure to ozone gas of 500 or 1,000 ppm for 6 hours or 200 ppm for 24 hours could not kill spores in pellets of diet, suggesting that dietary protein inhibited the bactericidal activity of ozone.  相似文献

Accuracy of an image-free cup navigation system--an anatomical study]   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The position of the acetabular cup is of decisive importance for the function of a total hip replacement (THR). Using the conventional surgical technique, correct placement of the cup often fails due to a lack of information about pelvic tilt. With CT-based and fluoroscopically-assisted navigation procedures the accuracy of implantation has been significantly improved. However, additional radiation exposure, high cost and the increased time requirement have hampered the acceptance of these techniques. The present anatomical study evaluates the accuracy of an alternative procedure--image-free navigation. This method requires little extra effort, does not substantially delay surgery, and needs no additional imaging. Press-fit cups were implanted in 10 human cadaveric hips with the help of the image-free navigation system, and the position of the cups was checked intraoperatively with a CT-based navigation system and postoperatively by computed tomography. All cups were implanted within the targeted safe zone with an average inclination of 44 degrees (range 40 degrees-48 degrees, SABW 2.7 degrees) and an average anteversion of 18 degrees (range 12-24 degrees, SABW 4.1 degrees). Analysis of accuracy of the image-free navigation software revealed only a small, clinically tolerable deviation in cup anteversion and cup inclination in comparison with the CT-based navigation system and the post operative CT scans. The evaluated image-free navigation system appears to be a practicable and reliable alternative to the computer-assisted implantation of acetabular cups in total hip arthroplasty.  相似文献

The parasitic system ixodid tick (parasite)--vertebrate animal (host) is relatively stable in space and time. Equilibrium state in the system is maintained at the low levels of the hosts' infection and moderate intensity of their immunity. Parasite sensitizes the host's organism at the stage of feeding on antigens of its saliva and the host develops different degrees of resistance preventing the subsequent individuals of ticks from normal feeding. Antitick immunity is species specific. Its intensity is defined by the species belonging of the parasite and host, intensity and intervals between infections, availability of "anti-immune mechanisms" in tick and by many other factors, which are realized at the feeding stage. Regulation of the number of ticks, depending on their abundance in the host's population, is attained due to the oversparse, close to negative binomial distribution on hosts. This mechanism functions on the principle of feedback, so that at the excessive number of the parasite some individuals in the host's population, which are especially subjected to infection, do not cope with parasitic burden and die. However, ticks, which failed to finish their feeding and represent a disproportionately great part of the whole parasite's population, die together with them and the parasitic system quickly restores its stability. In anthropocoenoses and ecosystems at different stages of anthropogenic transformation mutual regulation mechanisms of the parasite and host number break down. As a consequence, extremely high rises in the number of ticks and epizootics of agricultural animals associated with them can occur.  相似文献

Rodents are the subjects of the overwhelming majority of laboratory animal studies, and most laboratory rodents are nocturnal. The availability of a suitable diurnal rodent would provide a more effective animal model for biomedical research applicable to humans. The author describes several characteristics of the Nile grass rat that make this diurnal murid rodent an attractive laboratory animal.  相似文献

Data processing systems for the management of animal houses are available as individually tailored solutions to meet the specific requirements of different institutions in various sectors. After four years of use, a “proprietary system” (originally used by Boehringer/Mannheim), which was based on UNIFACE and ORACLE database software and consisted of a VAX station with eight terminals, was replaced by a PC-based multi-user system for administrative employees and animal technicians. The new system runs under the operating systems of Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows NT and uses Microsoft Access 97 as the database software. A “multipurpose program system” was created in order to fulfil the following main functions: documentation and control of experimental plans and animal usage; registering changes in the number of animals available; controlling room use and animal storage areas; maintenance cost calculations for determining the cost of experiments and an evaluation of how animals are used and consumed.

CAMS (Computerised Animal House Management System) has a centralised / decentralised structure and is a user-friendly, interactive system which can only be accessed by authorised groups of users. You do not need to be highly skilled with computers to master the system. It can generate daily and monthly reports and any necessary documentation. Furthermore, it complies with the revised Animal Protection Act (1998; annual report on number of animals used), facilitates a detailed analysis of housing and the associated costs and provides options for documenting different types of experimental data.

For this reason, the system has become an increasingly important tool for the management of our own animal facilities and animal experiments as well as for external ones.  相似文献

A critical review is presented of studies in which (for one reason or another) physiological measures in individually-housed rats are contrasted with those of group-housed counterparts. Most studies seem to focus on adrenocortical activity; gonadal hormone secretion and estimation of localized putative neuro-transmitters. An attempt is made to link these factors and to correlate them with the well-documented behavioral changes seen in ‘isolated’ rats. It is concluded that it is possible that the changes in biogenic amines and hormones are related. It seems unlikely, however, that one can dismiss the physiological changes seen in individually-housed rats as ‘isolation stress’. Adrenocortical reactivity may be increased in ‘isolated’ rats and this may account for their apparent increased basal activity. It is concluded that there is a distinct lack of ‘in depth’ studies in this area.  相似文献

We developed a CytoAccess laboratory management system based on the widely used Microsoft Access software to facilitate data processing, result reporting, and quality management for a full-service cytogenetics laboratory. The CytoAccess system consists of four functional modules. The data entry module is for logging in patient information. The result entry module is used to generate chromosome, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), and array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) reports. The administrative module enables periodic monitoring of quality control and quality improvement (QA/QI) parameters and produces billing forms. The maintenance module allows users to update clinical demographics, report templates, code tables, and to refresh data links. We have integrated into this system over 15,000 chromosome and FISH results from prenatal, postnatal, and cancer cases for the past six years. This system is cost-effective, user-friendly, flexible in updating, and potentially adaptable for data mining.  相似文献

The aim of the present mini review is to describe the laboratory rabbit, an animal that has been widely used for the study of atherosclerosis, the leading cause of mortality in Western society. Due to the fact that the rabbit exhibits hypercholesterolaemia within a few days of an administration of a high cholesterol diet, it is very sensitive to the inducement of atheromatic lesions. The administration of different types of diets can cause different types of lesions. Although these lesions do not develop as tissue plaques, a great number of researchers use this animal model to test the effectiveness of drugs because of their similarity to human fatty streaks. The generation over recent years of transgenic rabbits with alterations in specific genes is expected to help with the elucidation of the mechanisms underlying the initial and developmental stages of the disease. The laboratory rabbit is significantly broadening our understanding on the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.  相似文献
