This work aimed to study the impacts of acquisition and assimilationof various nitrogen sources, i.e. NO3, NH4+ or NH4NO3,in combination with gaseous NH3 on plant growth and acid-basebalance in higher plants. Plants of C3 Triticum aestivum L.and C4 Zea mays L. grown with shoots in ambient air in hydroponicculture solutions with 2 mol m–3 of nitrogen source asNO3, NH4+ or NH4NO3 for 21 d and 18 d, respectively,had their shoots exposed either to 320 µg m–3 NH3or to ambient air for 7 d. Variations in plant growth (leaves,stubble and roots), and OH and H+ extrusions as wellas the relative increases in nitrogen, carbon and carboxylatewere determined. These data were computed as H+/N, H+/C, (C-A)/N,and (C-A)/C to analyse influences of different nitrogen sourceson acid-base balance in C3 Triticum aestivum and C4 Zea maysplants. Root growth in dry weight gain was significantly reduced bytreatment with 320 µg m–3 NH3 in Triticum aestivumand Zea mays growing with different N-forms, whereas leaf growthwas not significantly affected by NH3. In comparison with C3Triticum aestivum, non-fumigated C4 Zea mays had low ratiosof OH/N in NO3–3-grown plants and of H+/N in NH4+- and NH 4NO3-grown plants. Utilization of NH3 from the atmospherereduced both the OHN ratios in NO3 -grown plantsand the H+/N ratio in NH4+ - and NH4NO3 -grown plants of bothspecies. Furthermore, Zea mays had higher ratios of (C-A)/Nin NH4+ - and NH4NO3-grown plants than Triticum aestivum. Thismeans that C4 Zea mays had synthesized more organic anion perunit increase in organic N than C3 Triticum aestivum plants.Within both species, different nitrogen sources altered theratios of (C-A)/N in the order: NH4NO3>NH4+>NO3.Fumigation with NH3 increased organic acid synthesis in NO3- and NH4+ - grown plants of Triticum aestivum, whereas it decreasedorganic acid synthesis in Zea mays plants under the same conditions.Furthermore, these differences in acid-base regulation betweenC3 Triticum aestivum and C4 Zea mays plants growing with differentnitrogen sources are discussed. An efficient medium for multiplication of Prunus cerasifera,J. F. Ehrh. cv. ‘Atropurpurea’, Pissardi plum, consistedof Linsmaier-Skoog basal medium (LS) supplemented with 3% sucrose,10mg 1–1 N4-(2-isopentenyl) adenine (2iP), and 162 mg1–1 phloroglucinol (Phl). Phl in the medium significantlyenhanced growth (P < 0.1 %) over cultures maintained on LSmedium with 10 mg 1–1 2iP and no Phl. Plantlets were rootedon a half-strength Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium supplementedwith 0.2 mg 1–1 indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Forskolin,UTP, 1-ethyl-2-benzimidazolinone (1-EBIO), NS004, 8-methoxypsoralen(Methoxsalen; 8-MOP), and genistein were evaluated for theireffects on ion transport across primary cultures of human bronchialepithelium (HBE) expressing wild-type (wt HBE) and F508(F-HBE) cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator. In wtHBE, the baseline short-circuit current (Isc)averaged 27.0 ± 0.6 µA/cm2 (n = 350). Amiloride reduced this Isc by 13.5 ± 0.5 µA/cm2 (n = 317). In F-HBE,baseline Isc was 33.8 ± 1.2 µA/cm2 (n = 200), and amiloride reducedthis by 29.6 ± 1.5 µA/cm2 (n = 116), demonstrating the characteristic hyperabsorption of Na+ associated with cystic fibrosis (CF). In wt HBE,subsequent to amiloride, forskolin induced a sustained,bumetanide-sensitive Isc(Isc = 8.4 ± 0.8 µA/cm2; n = 119). Addition ofacetazolamide, 5-(N-ethyl-N-isopropyl)-amiloride, and serosal 4,4'-dinitrostilben-2,2'-disulfonic acid further reduced Isc, suggesting forskolin also stimulatesHCO3 secretion. This was confirmed by ionsubstitution studies. The forskolin-induced Iscwas inhibited by 293B, Ba2+, clofilium, and quinine,whereas charybdotoxin was without effect. In F-HBE the forskolinIsc response was reduced to 1.2 ± 0.3 µA/cm2 (n = 30). In wt HBE, mucosal UTPinduced a transient increase in Isc ( Isc = 15.5 ± 1.1 µA/cm2;n = 44) followed by a sustained plateau, whereas inF-HBE the increase in Isc was reduced to5.8 ± 0.7 µA/cm2 (n = 13). In wtHBE, 1-EBIO, NS004, 8-MOP, and genistein increased Isc by 11.6 ± 0.9 (n = 20), 10.8 ± 1.7 (n = 18), 10.0 ± 1.6 (n = 5), and 7.9 ± 0.8 µA/cm2(n = 17), respectively. In F-HBE, 1-EBIO, NS004, and8-MOP failed to stimulate Cl secretion. However, additionof NS004 subsequent to forskolin induced a sustained Clsecretory response (2.1 ± 0.3 µA/cm2,n = 21). In F-HBE, genistein alone stimulatedCl secretion (2.5 ± 0.5 µA/cm2,n = 11). After incubation of F-HBE at 26°C for24 h, the responses to 1-EBIO, NS004, and genistein were allpotentiated. 1-EBIO and genistein increased Na+ absorptionacross F-HBE, whereas NS004 and 8-MOP had no effect. Finally,Ca2+-, but not cAMP-mediated agonists, stimulatedK+ secretion across both wt HBE and F-HBE in aglibenclamide-dependent fashion. Our results demonstrate thatpharmacological agents directed at both basolateral K+ andapical Cl conductances directly modulate Clsecretion across HBE, indicating they may be useful in ameliorating theion transport defect associated with CF.

SYNOPSIS. Studies are described on the adenosine triphosphatase(ATPase) properties of myosin isolated from skeletal muscleof Coryphaenoides, a benthic fish captured at 2,200 meters depth.Ca2+-ATPase and EDTA-ATPase of Coryphaenoides myosin show thesame pH dependence as ATPase of mammalian myosin; however, ratesof ATP hydrolysis by Coryphaenoides myosin are only 5–10%of rates of ATP hydrolysis by rabbit skeletal myosin. Coryphaenoidesmyosin ATPase shows a decrease from Q10 of 2.0 at 25°C toQ10 of 1.4 a t 2°C, and undergoes irreversible denaturationat temperatures above 25°C. At pH 6.8 to pH 8.5, Coryphaenoidesmyosin ATPase undergoes activation by pressure at 25°C,but at 2°C shows negligible effect of pressure at valuesbelow 3,000 psi. The kinetic data on Ca2+-ATPase indicate valuesof 11 kcal/mole for H, –7.5 kcal/mole for TS, and –5.7cc/mole for V at 25°C, pH 7.6. Comparable data at 2°Cindicate values of 5 kcal/mole for H. –13 kcal/mole forTS, and negligible V. According to the results of 25°C,Ca2+-activatkm of myosin-ATP may involve disruption of fouror five hydrophobic or polar groups, presumably due to an "opening-up"of the myosin molecule at or near the site for ATP binding.It would also appear that Coryphaenoides myosin has undergonean adaptive change in the enzyme mechanism for ATPase such thatthe rate of ATP hydrolysis is relatively insensitive to pressureand temperature under conditions encountered by the living fish.  相似文献

In nature, large concentrations of the toxic bloom-forming dinoflagellate,Gonyaulax tamarensis, are frequently observed in the vicinityof the pycnocline. In the absence of a pycnocline the organismis usually recorded near the surface, where light levels aremore advantageous for photosynthesis. In this paper we examinethe swimming behaviour of G.tamarensis when exposed to varyingdegrees of stratification and investigate whether the maintenanceof a subsurface (pycnocline) population is the result of retentionof the algae by a physical barrier or active accumulation ofthe organisms at a density interface. The study indicates thatG.tamarensis cells presented with a halocline of S<{smalltilde}6–7 (occurring over a few centimeters) cross thissalinity barrier and accumulate at the highest available photonflux density ({small tilde}100 µmol m–2 s–1).Cells exposed to a gradient of S>{small tilde}7remain atthe halocline (pfd={small tilde}40 µmol m–2 s–1).However, when light above the pycnocline is attenuated by theaddition of food colour to the medium, the cells cross a haloclineof S=10 and accumulate at the highest available photon fluxdensity. In the absence of added nutrients (inorganic N andP) the organism fails to exhibit a phototactic response. Thus,the presence of a strong halocline does not represent an inpenetrablephysical barrier for G.tamarensis and the development of pycnoclinepopulations of this organism is a function of density, lightand nutrient climate.  相似文献

The occurrence and endogenous level of various plant hormoneswere measured for the short-day plants Lemna paucicostata 151and 381 and the long-day plant Lemna gibba G3 to determine whetherany of them are involved in the photoperiodic control of flowering.ABA, IAA, GA1, GA29, GA34, GA53, trans- and cis-zeatin, trans-and cis-ribosyl zeatin, N6-(2-isopentenyl) adenine and N6-(2-isopentenyl)adenosine were definitely detected in each species, while GA4was only detected in L. gibba G3 and GA20 was only detectedin L. paucicostata 151. The endogenous levels of ABA and IAAwere in the range of 1–7 ng/g fr wt and were not significantlydifferent in vegetative and flowering plants. The endogenousgibberellin levels were generally higher in Lemna grown underlong-day rather than short-day conditions. The endogenous cytokininlevels were almost the same in both flowering and vegetativeplants of L. paucicostata 151 and 381. In L. gibba G3, however,the level of cis-ribosyl zeatin, N6-(2-isopentenyl) adenineand N6-(2-sopentenyl) adenosine were higher in vegetative thanin flowering plants. These results indicate that there is not necessarily a directrelation between endogenous plant hormone levels and flowering,and that the chemical basis for the photoperiodic control offlowering cannot be explained solely by changes in hormone levels.The possibility remains, however, that one or more of the planthormones has some influence of secondary importance on the floweringprocess in Lemna. N-Terminally truncated DNA polymerase from Thermus thermophilus(Tth polymerase) lacking 5'-3' exonuclease activity was usedfor DNA sequencing and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In contrastto the high background of the sequencing ladder observed withthe wild-type Tth polymerase, Tth polymerase gave readable sequencingpatterns which extend up to more than 500 bases from the primersite on cycle sequencing and automated sequencing. The Tth polymerasewas used for the standard and mutagenic PCR, and net amplificationof the DNA and the mutations accumulated during PCR were analyzed.Under mutagenic PCR, the mutation rates were 7.0 x 10–4(Tth) and 8.3 x 10–4 (Tth) per nucleotide per cycle ofamplification, which were 4–9 times higher than the ratesunder standard PCR.  相似文献

Adventitious plantlets were obtained from lateral buds, shoottips, embryos, and pieces of stem and rachilla tissue of Phoenixdactylifera L. cultured on a modified Murashige and Skoog mediumcontaining 3 mg l–1 N-(2-isopenty)adenine 0?1–100mg l–1 -naphthaleneacetic acid or 2,4-dichlorophenoxyaceticacid, and 3 g l–1 activated charcoal. Additions of auxinswere necessary to induce explants to produce callus, adventitiousplantlets, and roots. Plantlets were obtained from explantscultured 3–4 months in vitro. No difference in growthresponses between male and female explants was observed duringculture. Complex addenda of activated charcoal and polyvinylpyrrolidonewere tested in the nutrient media at various concentrationsto prevent explant browning. Activated charcoal fostered satisfactorygrowth by reducing the browning and inhibition of growth ofexplants.  相似文献

These experiments were performed to determine the effects ofreducing Ca2+ influx(Cain) onK+ currents(IK) inmyocytes from rat small mesenteric arteries by1) adding externalCd2+ or2) lowering externalCa2+ to 0.2 mM. When measured froma holding potential (HP) of 20 mV(IK20),decreasing Cain decreasedIK at voltageswhere it was active (>0 mV). When measured from a HP of 60 mV(IK60),decreasing Cain increasedIK at voltagesbetween 30 and +20 mV but decreased IK at voltagesabove +40 mV. Difference currents(IK) weredetermined by digital subtraction of currents recorded under controlconditions from those obtained whenCain was decreased. At testvoltages up to 0 mV,IK60 exhibitedkinetics similar to controlIK60, with rapidactivation to a peak followed by slow inactivation. At 0 mV, peakIK60 averaged75 ± 13 pA (n = 8) withCd2+ and 120 ± 20 pA(n = 9) with lowCa2+ concentration. At testvoltages from 0 to +60 mV,IK60 always had an early positive peak phase, but its apparent "inactivation" increased with voltage and its steady value became negative above +20mV. At +60 mV, the initial peakIK60 averaged115 ± 18 pA with Cd2+ and 187 ± 34 pA with low Ca2+. With 10 mM pipette BAPTA, Cd2+ produced asmall inhibition ofIK20 but stillincreased IK60 between 30 and +10 mV. InCa2+-free external solution,Cd2+ only decreased bothIK20 andIK60. In thepresence of iberiotoxin (100 nM) to inhibitCa2+-activatedK+ channels(KCa),Cd2+ increasedIK60 at allvoltages positive to 30 mV while BAY K 8644 (1 µM) decreasedIK60. Theseresults suggest that Cain, through L-type Ca2+ channels and perhapsother pathways, increases KCa(i.e., IK20) and decreases voltage-dependent K+currents in this tissue. This effect could contribute to membrane depolarization and force maintenance.

The compositions and positional distributions of fatty acidsin the major leaf phospholipids of phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholineand phosphatidylethanolamine were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatographyand enzymic hydrolysis, and chilling-sensitive and chilling-resistantplants were comparcd with respect to the relative contents ofpalmitic and trans-3-hexadecenoic acids in the separated phospholipids.A distinct difference between these plants was found in thefatty acid compositions of phosphatidylglycerol, in which thesum of palmitic and trans-3-hexadecenoic acids ranged from 60to 78% of the total fatty acids in 8 species of chilling-sensitiveplants, and from 50 to 57% in 11 species of chilling-resistantplants. The only exception among the chilling sensitive plantsin this respect was the tomato, in which the sum of palmiticand trans-3-hexadecenic acids in phosphatidylglycerol amountedto 54%. The fatty acid compositions and the positional distributionsof fatty acids in phosphatidylglycerol suggest that the occurrenceof high proportions of dipalmitoyl and 1-palmitoyl-2-(trans-3-hexadecenoyl)species in this lipid is correlated with the susceptibilityto chilling of the leaves of higher plants. SYNOPSIS. At low temperature (3°C), in the absence of substrateand cofactor, trout liver fructose diphosphatase (FDPase) isinactivated by exposures to relatively low pressures. FDP andMg2+ protect against this inactivation; hence, maximum catalysisat pH 7.5 is pressure insensitive, while at more alkaline pH,it is markedly accelerated by pressure. The volume change ofactivation, V*, at saturating FDP and Mg2+ concentrations isabout –40 cm3/mole. The apparent Km for FDP and the Kafor Mg2+ are markedly increased by pressure. At low FDP or Mg2+levels these kinetic properties outweigh V* in determining thereaction rate; hence, under these conditions, piessure retardscatalysis. Similarly, the K4 for AMP is notably pressure sensitive.Comparable effects of pressure on the kinetic constants forliver FDPase from benthic Corypliaenoides are much less pronounced,suggesting that in these off-shore species enzyme-substrate,enzyme-cofactor, and enzyme-modulator interactions have beentailored through evolution for pressure independent catalyticfunction.  相似文献

In Trifolium repens L. there were immediate transient depolarizationsof the membrane electropotential (Evo) when KH2PO4 was addedto phosphate-free media, but these were of the same magnitudeas the controls (K2SO4 and KCI). Furthermore, the extents ofdepolarization were the same as the expected effect of the addedK+ calculated using the Goldman equation. There was no significantdepolarization on adding H3PO4 to buffered media. Consequently,there was no evidence for a depolarization caused by phosphate.This result provides evidence that the H+–H2PO4 symportin roots of T. repens operates with a stoichiometry of 1: 1. In a group of control plants ( + P plants) and a group whichwere stressed by reducing the supply of phosphate (– Pplants), the – P plants had lower values for Evo than+P plants (– 118 mV and – 130 mV, respectively).The absence of phosphate from the measurement media also reducedEvo (mean effect = 9 mV). A significant difference in Evo between– P and + P plants persisted when phosphate was addedto – P plants. The most common mutation in the CFTR gene in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF), F508, leads to the absence of CFTR Cl channels in the apical plasma membrane, which in turn results in impairment of mucociliary clearance, the first line of defense against inhaled bacteria. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is particularly successful at colonizing and chronically infecting the lungs and is responsible for the majority of morbidity and mortality in patients with CF. Rescue of F508-CFTR by reduced temperature or chemical means reveals that the protein is at least partially functional as a Cl channel. Thus current research efforts have focused on identification of drugs that restore the presence of CFTR in the apical membrane to alleviate the symptoms of CF. Because little is known about the effects of P. aeruginosa on CFTR in the apical membrane, whether P. aeruginosa will affect the efficacy of new drugs designed to restore the plasma membrane expression of CFTR is unknown. Accordingly, the objective of the present study was to determine whether P. aeruginosa affects CFTR-mediated Cl secretion in polarized human airway epithelial cells. We report herein that a cell-free filtrate of P. aeruginosa reduced CFTR-mediated transepithelial Cl secretion by inhibiting the endocytic recycling of CFTR and thus the number of WT-CFTR and F508-CFTR Cl channels in the apical membrane in polarized human airway epithelial cells. Komatsuna (Brassica campestris L. var. rapa) plants were grownhydroponically under various conditions with respect to thesupply of nitrate, and the variations in levels of natural 15Nabundance (15N) in nitrogenous fractions of leaf blades, petiolesplus midribs, and roots in these plants were analyzed. The fractionation of nitrogen isotopes during uptake of nitratewas null irrespective of the concentrations of nitrate in theculture medium. The roots had lower 15N values than that inthe nitrate applied to plants. The nitrate in the three tissuesexamined had higher 15N values than that in the nitrate applied:the values were highest in the leaf blades which were presumedto have highest activities in terms of reduction of nitrate.In contrast, the amino acids and residual fractions had lower15N values than those in the nitrate applied.   1. Phyllosinol is a phytotoxic metabolite of Phyllosticta sp. Thissubstance at 100 µg/ml produced dark grey necrotic lesionson the leaf of red clover. Sensitivities of various plant speciesto phyllosinol differed both quantitatively and qualitatively.
  2. Phyllosinol reduced root growth in rice seedlings by 60% at10–4 M, whereas stimulation of root elongation occurredat a concentration range from 10–9 to 10–5 M.
  3. Phyllosinolat 2.5x10–4M promoted adventitious root formationin epicotylsof Azukia cuttings by about 100%. Promotion waspartly reducedby simultaneous application of cysteine.
  4. IAA-induced elongationof isolated Avena coleoptile sectionswas inhibited by phyllosinolat a concentration range from 10–5to 10–3M.
  5. Sulfhydrylcompounds, i.e. cysteine and glutathione relievedinhibitioncaused by phyllosinol in IAA-induced elongation ofAvena coleoptilesections.
  6. GA3-induced elongation of wheat leaf sections wasslightly inhibitedby phyllosinol at 10–4M.
  7. Phyllosinolalso has antibiotic activity. Among the organismstested, Phycomycetesand Gram-negative bacteria appeared mostsusceptible to phyllosinol.

The euryhaline charophyte Lamprothamnium papulosum (Wallr.)J. Gr. was adapted to media with decreasing salinities rangingfrom 550 to 0 mosmol kg–1. Vegetative plants grown inmedia with osmotic pressures (0) in the range of 550 to 130mosmol kg–1 maintained a constant turgor pressure () at309 + 7 mosmol kg–1. The ions K+, Na+ and Cl–, werethe predominant solutes in the vacuole. Changes in their concentrationsaccount for the variation in internal osmotic pressure (1) with,0. The divalent ions Mg2+, Ca2+ and were also present in significant amounts, but their concentrationsdid not alter with changes in, 0. In cells subjected to hypo-osmotic shock the regulation of was incomplete. The turgor pressure increased from 302 to 383mosmol kg–1. The first rapid response to the sudden decreasein 0 was a loss of K+ and Cl. In contrast to the decreasein ionic concentrations an accumulation of sucrose occurredwhich could account for the increase of . The increase in sucroseconcentration started 24 to 48 h after the downshock and reachedits highest value after 3 to 4 weeks. The sucrose concentrationin the vacuole was up to 320 mol m–3. During this timethe ionic content continued to decrease but did not counterbalancethe sucrose concentration sufficiently to regain the original. High sucrose levels accompanied by an enhanced were also observedduring the period of fructification (sexual reproduction: formationof antheridia and oogonia) in Lamprothamnium kept under conditionsof constant salinity. It is concluded that high sucrose content and elevated arecharacteristic of sexual reproduction in this charophyte. Withan estimated 0.034 mm2 in filter area, fluid velocity of 0.041cm s–1 and respiration of 1.8 x 104 ergs h–1 (calculatedfrom Porter and McDonough, 1984), a 0.5 mm Bosmina uses <4%of its metabolism to overcome filter resistance. The velocities used in the original examples (0.4 cm s–1for Ceriodaphnia, 0.2 cm s–1 for Bosmina) were derivedfrom literature values of appendage beat rate and estimatesof the distance travelled by the appendages during each beatcycle. This approach unnecessarily assumes that all water movedpasses through the filter. In the new calculations, the flowacross the filter needed for food to be collected by sieving(0.07 cm s–1 for Ceriodaphnia and 0.041 cm s–1 forBosmina) was determined from the maximum clearance rate/filterarea. The amended energy expenditures, although higher, do notrefute the sieve model of particle collection.  相似文献

J. Appl. Physiol. 83(3):851-859, 1997.Previous studies have shown that, when thepharyngeal muscles are relaxed, the velopharynx is a highly compliantsegment of the pharynx. Thus, under these circumstances,cross-sectional area of the velopharynx (AVP), drivingpressure across the velopharynx (P), and inspiratory airflow(I) willbe mutually interdependent variables. The purpose of the presentinvestigation was to describe the interrelation among these threevariables during inspiration. We studied 15 sleeping patients withobstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea when the pharyngeal muscles wererendered hypotonic by applying continuous positive airway pressure tothe nasal airway.AVP, determined by endoscopic imaging, was significantly greater at onset ofI limitationthan at minimum oropharyngeal pressure(P < 0.01). Snoring was neverobserved duringIlimitation. In a subgroup of six patients, values for P,I, andAVP were obtainedat 0.1-s intervals at various levels of mask pressure. For these sixpatients, the mathematical expressionI = 0.657(AVP/Amax) · P0.332,where Amax ismaximal AVP,described the relationship among the three variables(R2 = 0.962) forflow-limited and non-flow-limited inspirations. The impedance of thepassive velopharynx, defined asP0.33/,was inversely related toAVP and increaseddramatically when AVP was <0.3cm2. In summary, we observed aprogressive decrease inAVP during flow-limited inspiration in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Thisconstriction of the velopharynx contributes to an increase invelopharyngeal impedance that, in turn, counterbalances the increase inP during flow limitation.

Uptake of the toxic heavy-metal, thallium, was studied in thecyanobacterium Synechococcus R-2 (PCC 7942) using clinicallyavailable 201Tl +. Thallium was found to distribute across theplasmalemma passively, and so the accumulation ratio of theion ([Tl+]i/[Tl+]o) could be used to calculate the apparentmembrane potential (­i,o) of the cells (ETI+i,o = ­i,o).The permeability of the plasmalemma to TI+ (PTI+ 1 to 5 nms–1)is higher than that of K+. Valinomycin does not increase thepermeability of TI+. Transient changes in the ­i,o of cells,because of electrogenic transport of ions, could be detectedfrom its effects upon the uptake rate of TI+. HCO3 hyperpolarizedSynechococcus cells, whereas NH+4, CH3NH+, and K+ led to depolarization.The use of TI+ as a reporter of ­i,o has some inherent limitations.Tl+ is toxic at very low concentrations (inhibitory effectsare apparent after about 6 h at concentrations as low as 1 mmolm–3). The rate of equilibration is slow (t1/25 to 20 min).Equilibration of TI+ takes about 2 h, which limits its valueas a membrane potential probe. Large amounts of TI+ bind tothe surface of the cells making the method impracticable formeasuring accumulation ratios of less than about 10 (­i,o)values smaller than about –60 mV). Cultures continuouslyexposed to Tl+ (10 mmol m–3) eventually become TI+ resistantby actively extruding TI+ (µTI+i,o= –3±0.2kJ mol–1) and so thallium cannot be used as a ­i,oprobe in such cells. Spirulina platensis is an alkalophilic cyanobacterium, exhibitingoptimal growth at pH 9.0 to 10.0. It grows well at pH 11.5 butnot at pH 7.0. Unlike many other photosynthetic microorganisms,it is capable of utilizing ammonia3 even at high pH values,and is resistant to the ammonia-mediated uncoupling of photosynthesis.The entry of ammonia into the cells is pH-dependent, and islimited by a relatively high average internal pH.
