In Scandinavia, farmed arctic foxes frequently escape from farms, raising concern about hybridization with the endangered
wild population. This study was performed to find a genetic marker to distinguish escaped farm foxes from wild Scandinavian
foxes. Microsatellite and mitochondrial control region variation were analyzed in 41 farm foxes. The results were compared
with mitochondrial and microsatellite data from the wild population in Scandinavia. The farm foxes were genetically distinct
from the wild foxes (F
ST=0.254, P < 0.00001) and all farm foxes had a single control region haplotype different from those observed in the wild population.
We developed a method based on Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) on the mitochondrial control region to differentiate
between farmed and wild arctic foxes. This test was subsequently successfully used on 25 samples from free-ranging foxes,
of which four had a suspected farm origin. All four of the suspected foxes, and none of the others, carried the farm fox haplotype.
Three of these were successfully genotyped for all eleven microsatellite loci. A population assignment test and a Bayesian
Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis indicated that two of these individuals were escaped farm foxes, and that the third possibly
was a hybrid between a farmed and a wild arctic fox. 相似文献

Cryogenic protocols have been developed for the storage of farmed silver fox (Vulpes vulpes) spermatozoa. However, these same protocols and modifications of these protocols have failed to satisfactorily preserve spermatozoa collected from farmed blue foxes (Alopex lagopus). Because cryogenic success has been linked to membrane composition, the plasma membrane lipid composition of farmed blue fox and silver fox spermatozoa was studied. Silver fox spermatozoal membranes have significantly higher levels of docosapentaenoic acid (DPA; 22:5, n-6) compared to blue fox spermatozoa, and blue fox spermatozoal membranes have significantly higher levels of stearic acid (18:0). Silver fox spermatozoal membranes not only have a higher ratio of unsaturated/saturated membrane fatty acids, but also higher levels of membrane desmosterol and cholesterol. 相似文献

The arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) is a medium-sized predator of the high Arctic experiencing extreme seasonal fluctuations in food availability, photoperiod and temperature. In this study, the plasma leptin, ghrelin and growth hormone (GH) concentrations of male arctic foxes were determined during a food deprivation period of 13 days and the subsequent recovery in November and May. Leptin, ghrelin and GH were present in arctic fox plasma in amounts comparable to other carnivores. The plasma leptin concentrations did not react to food deprivation unlike in humans and rodents. However, the leptin levels increased during re-feeding as an indicator of increasing energy reserves. The relatively high ghrelin–leptin ratio, decrease in the plasma ghrelin concentration, an increase in the circulating GH concentrations and the observed negative correlation between plasma ghrelin and free fatty acid levels during fasting suggest that these hormones take part in the weight-regulation and energy metabolism of this species by increasing fat utilisation during food deprivation. The results strengthen the hypothesis that the actions of these weight-regulatory hormones are species–specific and depend on seasonality and the life history of the animals.Abbreviations

Behavioural investigations frequently make use of video recordings. In a typical study, behaviour is recorded during a 24-h period using instantaneous sampling, a method whereby consecutive samples taken from the same animal are autocorrelated. This study sought to model the autocorrelation function and to evaluate the optimal sampling interval for recording periods of different length in farmed blue foxes. The data were based on video recordings. The autocorrelation was found to have two components: short-range and long-range. The range of the short-range component was from 2 to 4 min, implying that an animal continues the same operation without interruption for several minutes. The duration of the long-range component was from 20 to 75 min and was affected by the animals mental state. The optimal sampling interval was not the same for all the behaviours studied and, moreover, depended on the length of the recording period. If the recording period lasted for 3 to 5 days, the optimal sampling interval was from 10 to 15 min; if, however, there was only one recording day, the optimal sampling interval was from 4 to 6 min. 相似文献

Cache recovery is critical for evolution of hoarding behaviour, because the energy invested in caching may be lost if consumers
other than the hoarders benefit from the cached food. By raiding food caches, animals may exploit the caching habits of others,
that should respond by actively defending their caches. The arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) is the main predator of lemmings and goose eggs in the Canadian High Arctic and stores much of its prey in the ground. Common
ravens (Corvus corax) are not as successful as foxes in taking eggs from goose nests. This generalist avian predator regularly uses innovation
and opportunism to survive in many environments. Here, we provide the first report that ravens can successfully raid food

Spatial patterns of plant cover and species composition in arctic salt marsh and salt affected tundra near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska reflect gradients in elevation, soil conductivity, and soil concentrations of the ions prevalent in seawater. Soil conductivity and soil concentrations of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, SO4
= and Cl– were significantly related to site elevation, decreasing as elevation increased. Vascular plant species richness increased significantly as soil conductivity and soil ion concentrations decreased, and site elevation increased. Puccinellia phryganodes was the only species present in low elevation sites with low plant cover, high soil conductivity and high soil concentrations of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, SO4
= and Cl–. Mid-gradient sites were dominated by Carex subspathaceae. Plant cover at these sites was greater than at lower elevation sites, but bare ground was still present. Higher elevation sites had the lowest concentrations of soil ions and the lowest soil conductivities. These sites had little bare ground, contained as many as 16 species, and were dominated by Dupontia fischeri and Eriophorum angustifolium. Ordinations indicated that a complex topographic gradient related most closely to elevation and site distance from the coast best explains variation in the vegetation cover. Irregular deposition along the coastline partially or completely buried three sites in peat or sand up to 20 cm deep. Such rapid changes in plant cover and species composition contributes to the community patch mosaic typical of these marshes. Results suggest an individualistic response of plant species to the environmental gradients in salt marsh and salt affected tundra and are indicative of successional models developed in other marginal arctic environments. 相似文献

Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in the northern Alaska region den in coastal areas and on offshore drifting ice. We evaluated changes in the distribution
of polar bear maternal dens between 1985 and 2005, using satellite telemetry. We determined the distribution of maternal dens
occupied by 89 satellite collared female polar bears between 137°W and 167°W longitude. The proportion of dens on pack ice
declined from 62% in 1985–1994 to 37% in 1998–2004 (P = 0.044) and among pack ice dens fewer occurred in the western Beaufort Sea after 1998. We evaluated whether hunting, attraction
to bowhead whale remains, or changes in sea ice could explain changes in den distribution. We concluded that denning distribution
changed in response to reductions in stable old ice, increases in unconsolidated ice, and lengthening of the melt season.
In consort, these changes have likely reduced the availability and quality of pack ice denning habitat. Further declines in
sea ice availability are predicted. Therefore, we expect the proportion of polar bears denning in coastal areas will continue
to increase, until such time as the autumn ice retreats far enough from shore that it precludes offshore pregnant females
from reaching the Alaska coast in advance of denning. 相似文献

Migrations are often influenced by seasonal environmental gradients that are increasingly being altered by climate change. The consequences of rapid changes in Arctic sea ice have the potential to affect migrations of a number of marine species whose timing is temporally matched to seasonal sea ice cover. This topic has not been investigated for Pacific Arctic beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) that follow matrilineally maintained autumn migrations in the waters around Alaska and Russia. For the sympatric Eastern Chukchi Sea (‘Chukchi’) and Eastern Beaufort Sea (‘Beaufort’) beluga populations, we examined changes in autumn migration timing as related to delayed regional sea ice freeze‐up since the 1990s, using two independent data sources (satellite telemetry data and passive acoustics) for both populations. We compared dates of migration between ‘early’ (1993–2002) and ‘late’ (2004–2012) tagging periods. During the late tagging period, Chukchi belugas had significantly delayed migrations (by 2 to >4 weeks, depending on location) from the Beaufort and Chukchi seas. Spatial analyses also revealed that departure from Beaufort Sea foraging regions by Chukchi whales was postponed in the late period. Chukchi beluga autumn migration timing occurred significantly later as regional sea ice freeze‐up timing became later in the Beaufort, Chukchi, and Bering seas. In contrast, Beaufort belugas did not shift migration timing between periods, nor was migration timing related to freeze‐up timing, other than for southward migration at the Bering Strait. Passive acoustic data from 2008 to 2014 provided independent and supplementary support for delayed migration from the Beaufort Sea (4 day yr?1) by Chukchi belugas. Here, we report the first phenological study examining beluga whale migrations within the context of their rapidly transforming Pacific Arctic ecosystem, suggesting flexible responses that may enable their persistence yet also complicate predictions of how belugas may fare in the future. 相似文献

Polymorphism of prion protein gene in Arctic fox (<Emphasis Type="Italic">Vulpes lagopus</Emphasis>)
Prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative disorders of humans and certain other mammals. Prion protein gene (Prnp) is associated with susceptibility and species barrier to prion diseases. No natural and experimental prion diseases have
been documented to date in Arctic fox. In the present study, coding region of Prnp from 135 Arctic foxes were cloned and screened for polymorphisms. Our results indicated that the Arctic fox Prnp open reading frame (ORF) contains 771 nucleotides encoding 257 amino acids. Four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (G312C,
A337G, C541T, and A723G) were identified. SNPs G312C and A723G produced silent mutations, but SNPs A337G and C541T resulted
in a M–V change at codon 113 and R–C at codon 181, respectively. The Arctic fox Prnp amino acid sequence was similar to that of the dog (XM 542906). In short, this study provides preliminary information about

This paper describes the design and the preliminary evaluation of an integrated approach to the control of Echinococcus multilocularis in foxes using praziquantel bait. Air distribution of bait in agricultural and recreational areas was combined with distribution
of bait by hand in towns and villages to cover the entire fox population in the 213-km2 baiting area. Bait distribution density was 50/km2, and bait was distributed once every 4 weeks. Pre-baiting prevalence was 35% (22–50% CI 95%). During a 1-year period following
the first 4 months of bait distribution, only one positive fox was found (prevalence 1%; 0–4% CI 95%). No significant change
had occurred in the unbaited control area. This prevalence decline is far more pronounced than in previous fox-baiting studies,
which is likely to be due to the increased bait distribution density and baiting frequency, and the inclusion of the ‘urban’

Arctic ground squirrels overwintering in northern Alaska experience average soil temperature of −10°C. To examine energetic
costs of arousing from hibernation under arctic compared to temperate conditions, captive ground squirrels were maintained
in ambient temperatures (T
a) of 2, −5 and −12°C. Rates of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production were used to estimate metabolic rate and fuel
use during the three phases of arousal episodes: rewarming, euthermia, and recooling. Respiratory quotient comparisons suggest
exclusive use of lipid during rewarming and mixed fuel use during euthermia. Animals rewarming from torpor at T
a −12°C took longer, consumed more oxygen, and attained higher peak rates of oxygen consumption when compared to 2°C. T
a had no significant effect on cost or duration of the euthermic phase. Animals recooled faster at −12°C than at 2°C, but total
oxygen consumption was not different. T
a had no significant effect on the total cost of arousal episodes when all three phases are included. Arousal episodes account
for 86% of estimated costs of a complete hibernation cycle including torpor when at 2°C and only 23% at −12°C. Thus, due to
the higher costs of steady-state metabolism during torpor, proportional metabolic costs of arousal episodes at T

Ten yellow-phase American eels, Anguilla rostrata, were captured from Hammond Pond, a small freshwater pond located in central Maine, U.S.A. The eels were implanted with radio transmitters and released into nearby Hermon Pond. At the same time, 10 eels were captured from Hermon Pond, implanted with radio transmitters and returned to Hermon Pond to serve as a control group. The two ponds are connected by a 1.6km section of Souadabscook Stream. We tracked the 20 eels over the 90-day duration of the experiment. Four of the ten displaced eels returned to their home pond. None of the control fish were located outside of their home pond during the study. Three of the four eels that successfully returned to their home pond did so under the darkness of the new moon and the fourth made the journey during the first quarter moon phase. Location data showed that translocated and native eels tended to occupy different areas of Hermon Pond. This study provides evidence of homing behavior in American eels living in small freshwater ponds and indications that homing activity may be linked to lunar cycle. 相似文献

Winter habitat use and activity patterns of juvenile Atlantic salmon and brown trout were analysed in a comparative study
between Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) technology, radio telemetry and underwater observation by snorkelling. Two study
periods were conducted in Stoney River, Newfoundland, Canada. During Study period I, 49 juvenile Atlantic salmon (fork length:
11.0–18.0 cm) and 7 brown trout (11.0–17.3 cm) were tagged with PIT tags and/or radio transmitters in late winter of 2004.
During Study period II, 18 juvenile Atlantic salmon (fork length: 12.0–18.4 cm) and 23 brown trout (10.9–20.8 cm) were tagged
and tracked twice a day at 10:00 h and 22:00 h on five consecutive days in late winter of 2005. From the 56 fish released
during Study period I, on average 19.6 ± 6.0% of the PIT tagged fish and 99.3 ± 2.2% of the radio tagged fish were relocated
during any given survey. Over the Study period II, 39% of fish emigrated from the study site. PIT technology had an efficiency
of 39.2 ± 14.1% to detect the remaining fish. In contrast, radio telemetry relocated on average 96.9 ± 6.5% of the tagged
fish whereas by snorkelling on average only 4.1 ± 5.6% of the tagged fish were observed. PIT telemetry may however be more
efficient in smaller, less heterogeneous streams. The advantage of PIT technology over radio telemetry is clearly that it
is relatively less costly permitting higher numbers of individuals to be tagged and there is no limit in the operational life
of the transponder. In winter, juvenile salmonids preferred low flow velocity and no preferences were observed for any specific
water depth over the range of available water depths. Fish selected preferentially boulder habitat over other substrates in
the environment. Habitat utilisation did not differ between day and night. The use of winter preference indices may be important

The sea anemone Bathyphellia margaritacea (Danielssen in Actinida. The Norwegian North-Atlantic expedition 1876–1878, Groendahl, Oslo, 1890) was collected by the research
submersible MIR at the North Pole at a depth of 4,262 m and by the North Pole Drifting Station NP-22 in the American sector
of Arctic Ocean covered by permanent ice. These widely separated records significantly increase the known geographic range
of the species. B. margaritacea is highly plastic and has an ability to occupy different types of substrates. It appears to be the only species of sea anemone
that is able to range in the high Arctic up to the North Pole and the only reliably identified species known from this part

Adult roach (Rutilus rutilus) (13–25 cm) from two shallow lakes, one turbid and one with high water transparency, were tagged with surgically implanted miniature radio transmitters and their habitat use was monitored. Repeated tracking series over the course of the year provided information on seasonal changes in behaviour of roach in the two lakes. The results showed that the roach generally used the lakes only as summer habitat, whereas they moved into specific sheltered, restricted areas during winter. This behaviour was most pronounced in the lake with clear water, where roach gathered in large numbers in the stream in- and outlets as well as in other sheltered habitats where they remained rather passively during the 48 h tracking periods. In the turbid lake, many of the tagged roach, were even found in underground channels during the tracking in November. We see this behaviour as a response to low food abundance, decreased food demand and high predation risk, especially from birds. The tracking data from the clear lake showed that some tagged roach undertook swift habitat shifts from one refuge to the other. The traditional perception of the roach as a `lake fish' with an important structuring role in the lake ecosystem is undoubtedly true, but the present results suggest that roach are able to migrate between different habitat types and will do so if they can profit from this behaviour. 相似文献

The first report of Caulerpa taxifolia in the Mediterranean is from 1984. The alga was found on the rocky shore at Monaco, below the Oceanographic Museum, where
it had been on display in tropical aquaria. Within five years, there was an abundance of C. taxifolia on the shores around the first point of observation. In 1987, C. taxifolia appeared on the French coast, 3 km east of Monaco, at Cap Martin. By late 1991, 30 ha of shore in the vicinity of Monaco
was covered with the alga. New points of colonization were in Livorno, Italy, 240 km east of Monaco, and to the west at Agay,
Le Lavandou, Hyères, Toulon, Les Lecques, Saint Cyprien, 50 to 370 km from Monaco. The westernmost point of colonization,
noted in September 1992, was 600 km from Monaco, at Majorca (Balearic island, Spain). Most types of substrata, between 0 and
50 m depth, are susceptible to colonization by C. taxifolia. Seaweed and seagrass populations on the coasts of Monaco and Cap Martin have been significantly reduced or destroyed because

The cydippid ctenophore Mertensia ovum occurs throughout the Norwegian arctic regions at least from the ice edge to the Arctic Circle. Using new data from the Barents and Greenland Seas, a simple model is constructed in which the upper boundary conditions for the trophic impact of Mertensia on populations of Calanus in this area are explored. Based on abundance data from MOCNESS and vertical net samples, experimental data on feeding and a range of typical values for the abundance of the principal copepod species, the range of probable predation pressure on copepods is calculated. Using typical abundances of the copepods and ctenophores in the Barents Sea, M. ovum appears to be capable of consuming a maximum of ca 1–5% d–1 of the copepods in the water where it occurs. Vertical and horizontal spatial coupling probably plays a significant role in determining the extent of predation for this predator. Predation by other ctenophores may be a significant factor in its own biology. 相似文献

Clear-cutting increased the species diversity and amount of undergrowth plants in a habitat of Sika deer (Cervus nippon) on Mt. Goyo, northern Japan. The number of species increased from 15 to 48 as a result of clear-cutting. Among the plants,Sasa nipponica (a dwarf bamboo), an important forage plant for Sika deer, was predominant. Fecal pellets of deer were abundant in the forest
and at the “adjacent zone” (from the edge to 150 m out of the forest) and thereafter decreased suddenly. The intensity of
utilization ofSasa nipponica was also heavy in the forest, moderate at the adjacent zone and light 200 m from the forest edge. Since the amount of the
bamboo in the forest was small, the removal of bamboo was greatest at the adjacent zone. Clear-cutting creates a favorable
feeding area for Sika deer in this zone by increasing the available plant production and securing forest cover. 相似文献

The northern fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis) is a common seabird of the North Atlantic Ocean, with breeding colonies broadly dispersed between 45°N and 80°N. At higher
latitudes, breeding fulmars experience extensive sea-ice and presumably snow and low temperatures which do not affect fulmars
in the southern part of the breeding range. We studied the relationship between weather and reproductive success of northern
fulmars breeding at two colonies in the Canadian high Arctic. Collectively, hatching success, fledging success, and productivity
(chicks fledged per egg laid) were similar between our study and results from colonies located south of the Arctic. However,
a larger proportion of fulmars at apparently occupied sites (AOS) in high Arctic colonies appeared to forego egg-laying, resulting
in lower proportions of chicks fledged per AOS. Extreme inclement weather was the major factor influencing nesting success,
resulting in pulses of egg or chick loss during or immediately following major storms, although the mechanism of effects appeared
to differ between the two colonies. For Arctic fulmars, the risks of nest failure due to stochastic, deleterious weather events
may be offset by the predictable abundance of food supplies during chick-rearing in Arctic waters. 相似文献
