We studied forest structure, composition and tree species diversity of eight plots in an environmental matrix of four altitudes (700, 1700, 2700 and 3100 m) and two types of geological substrates (ultrabasic and non-ultrabasic rocks) on Mount Kinabalu, Borneo. On both substrate series, forest stature, mean leaf area and tree species diversity (both 4.8 cm and 10 cm diameter at breast height [dbh]) decreased with altitude. The two forests on the different substrate series were similar at 700 m in structure, generic and familial composition and tree species diversity, but became dissimilar with increasing altitude. The decline in stature with altitude was steeper on the ultrabasic substrates than on the non-ultrabasic substrates, and tree species diversity was generally lower on ultrabasic substrates than on non-ultrabasic substrates at 1700 m. The forests on non-ultrabasic substrates at higher altitudes and those on ultrabasic substrates at the lower altitudes were similar in dbh versus tree height allometry, mean leaf area, and generic and familial composition at 1700 m. These contrasting patterns in forest structure and composition between the two substrate series suggested that altitudinal change was compressed on the ultrabasic substrates compared to the non-ultrabasic substrates. Tree species diversity was correlated with maximum tree height and estimated aboveground biomass, but was not with basal area, among the eight study sites. We suggest that forests with higher tree species diversity are characterized by greater biomass allocation to height growth relative to trunk diameter growth under more productive environment than forests with lower tree species diversity.

Summary The histochemical activities of succinic dehydrogenase (SDH), myofibrillar Adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) and alpha glycerophosphate dehydrogenase were studied in serial sections of rat vastus lateralis (red) (RVL), gastrocnemius and diaphragm muscles. Three main fibre-types were distinguished. The Type I fibres of RVL and gastrocnemius muscles fell into two distinct groups: one category-Type IA showed very low ATPase activity. The second category of Type IB fibres displayed moderate ATPase reaction. The Type IA fibres were divisible into two sub-groups when tested for SDH reaction. Type IA1 fibres possessed a homogenous distribution of diformazan·granules throughout the fibre: Type IA2 fibres displayed characteristic moth-eaten pattern of diformazan localization. The diaphragm muscle did not show either Type IB or Type IA2 varieties. The great majority of Type I fibres were sub-type IA1 in the three fast muscles studied. It is also demonstrated here that an inherent heterogeneity exists between Type I fibres of diaphragm and leg muscles in regard to -GPD localization. This histochemical data emphasizes the fact that subdivision of Type I striated muscle fibres of mammalian animals into two sub-types is only approximate and that a further subcategorization is possible.

This study reports a novel splice variant form of the voltage-dependent calcium channel 2 subunit (2g). This variant is composed of the conserved amino-terminal sequences of the 2a subunit, but lacks the -subunit interaction domain (BID), which is thought essential for interactions with the 1 subunit. Gene structure analysis revealed that this gene was composed of 13 translated exons spread over 107 kb of the genome. The gene structure of the 2 subunit was similar in exon-intron organization to the murine 3 and human 4 subunits. Electrophysiological evaluation revealed that 2a and 2g affected channel properties in different ways. The 2a subunit increased the peak amplitude, but failed to increase channel inactivation, while 2g had no significant effects on either the peak current amplitude or channel inactivation. Other subunits, such as 3 and 4, significantly increased the peak current and accelerated current inactivation.

The spatial distributions of canopy and subcanopy species (50cm stem length) were investigated within a plot extending from the top of a ridge to the valley bottom in a cool-temperate old-growth mixed forest, dominated by Cryptomeria japonica and Fagus crenata, in the snowy region of Japan. Based on the longitudinal profile of the slope, the study slope was divided into the relatively gentle upper slope position (US), the steep lower slope position (LS), the flat valley bottom (VB) and the boundary zone between the upper and lower slopes (BS). Spatial dispersal and the association patterns of species were analyzed in upperstory (10cm d.b.h) and understory (<10cm d.b.h) layers. Dominant species in the upperstory layer abruptly changed from Cryptomeria to Fagus at the BS site. In contrast, the understory trees of many species, including shade-intolerant and evergreen species, were independent of the location of conspecific upperstory trees or canopy gaps and extended their distributions on and around the BS site. Significant, diverse canopy and subcanopy species occurred at this site in both upperstory and understory layers. On the BS site, which is the lower margin of Cryptomeria-dominated vegetation, there were many medium-sized C.japonica that were killed by uprooting or breaking of the stems as a result of heavy snow pressure. It is suggested that the snow pressure gradient along a slope has a strong influence on community structure and the maintenance of diverse canopy and subcanopy species in this snowy mixed forest.

Neurosteroids are endogenous Central Nervous System (CNS) compounds which act mainly by allosteric modulation of the GABAA receptor complex. The presence of a 3-hydroxyl group and a 5-hydrogen atom have been found to be essential structural requirements for biological activity in mammals. In the present work we report the enhancing activity on [3H]GABA binding to its receptor sites in chick optic lobe produced by progesterone metabolites 3-hydroxy,5-pregnan-20-one (3,5-P) and 3-hydroxy,5-pregnan-20-one (3,5-P). Both steroids were found able to enhance [3H]GABA binding along ontogeny, displaying a similar profile at early developmental stages, while in adulthood 3,5-P had greater potency (EC50 0.22 M) and enhancing effect (Emax: 122%). In adult synaptic membranes, the two compounds displayed a complex interaction with the GABAA receptor, disclosed by a Schild plot with slope below one and an incomplete displacement of 3,5-P by its 3,5 isomer. Such complexity could be related to the steroidogenic profile in avian CNS, with 5-reduced progesterone metabolites present since early development, while 3,5-P is found only in adulthood. Bearing in mind differences between avian and mammalian steroidogenic profiles and the relevance of 5-steroids in early avian development, we propose that 3,5-P, instead of the classical potent 3,5-steroids, may be the endogenous modulator of GABAergic activity in developing avian brain.

Growth rings (GR) in vertebral centra of 15 whale sharks, Rhincodon typus, four female (418–750cm precaudal length), 10 male (422–770cm), and one of unknown sex (688cm), were examined using x-radiography. GR counts were made from scanned images and count precision was determined using the average percentage error index (4.19%) and the index of precision D (3.31%). In females, counts ranged from 19 GR (418cm) to 27 GR (750cm); in males from 20 GR (670cm) to 31 GR (770cm). Three mature males had 20 GR (670cm), 24 GR (744cm) and 27 GR (755cm). A female with 22 GR (445cm) was adolescent. There was a linear relationship between centrum dorsal diameter and body length, and back-calculated body lengths at number of GR are presented. A linear relationship between body length and number of GR prevented the calculation of von Bertalanffy parameters from either observed or back-calculated values.

During the spring and summer months of 1995, 1996 and 1997, gillnet and longline surveys were conducted in conjunction with tag and recapture experiments to outline spatial and seasonal distribution of young sandbar sharks, Carcharhinus plumbeus, in Delaware Bay for essential fish habitat mapping, to assess abundance of young sandbar sharks, and to quantify growth during the summer nursery season. Sandbar sharks (n = 943) ranging from 40 to 120cm fork length (48 to 130cm total length) were captured; yearly totals were 199, 314 and 430 in 1995, 1996 and 1997, respectively. Individuals were captured between June and October in water temperatures ranging from 15.4° to 28.5°C and salinities ranging from 22.8 to 30.3 ppt. Presence of neonates and catch per unit effort data indicate that pupping begins in late June near the southwestern coast of the Bay. Juveniles were present from early June through September and their spatial distribution in the Bay appeared uniform. Of 782 sandbar sharks tagged and released during the three years, 50 were recaptured. Mean distance from tag to recapture location and mean days-at-liberty of sandbar sharks recaptured in Delaware Bay during the year of tagging were 10km and 18 days, respectively. Some sharks were recaptured as far as 957km from the release location. Length distributions show young-of-the-year sandbar sharks grow about 2–3cm in length during the nursery season.

Age and growth of the whiskery shark, Furgaleus macki, from southwestern Australia were examined using vertebral ageing and tag-recapture data. The readability of bands on the vertebral centra varied markedly between individuals. Four readers were used to make band counts, with the most experienced reader having the lowest index of average percent error and the highest level of agreement with final counts. Marginal increment analysis indicated that opaque bands form in January. With parturition occurring from August to October, size data suggests that the first band is probably formed 15–17 months after birth. The age at maturity was estimated to be 4.5 years for males, and 6.5 years for females. The oldest male was 10.5 years, and oldest female was 11.5 years. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters for males were L =121.5cm fork length, K=0.423 year–1, t 0=–0.472 years, were L =120.7cm fork length, K=0.369 year–1, t 0=–0.544 years for females, and were L =118.1cm fork length, K=0.420 year–1, t 0=–0.491 years for combined sexes. Data from a tag recapture study were analysed using a maximum likelihood method to verify the estimates of growth parameters from vertebral ageing. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters from the tag recapture study were L =128.2cm fork length, K=0.288 year–1, t 0=–0.654 years. The two methods of estimating growth parameters produced similar results, with rapid growth until approximately 5 years of age, after which there was little increase in length.

Summary In biomedical studies, dyes are divided into acid and basic dyes. This classification cannot be reconciled with current chemical definitions of acids and bases. Brönsted-Lowry acids are compounds that can donate protons; bases are proton acceptors. The definition of acids and bases is independent of the electric charge, i.e. acids and bases can be neutral, anionic or cationic. Reactions between acids and bases result in formation of new acid-base pairs. Lewis acids and bases do not depend on a particular element, but are characterized by their electronic configurations. Lewis bases are electron donors; Lewis acids are electron acceptors. This classification is also unrelated to the electric charge. Lewis acids and bases interact by formation of coordinate covalent bonds. In histochemistry and histology, dyes containing SO 3 , –COO and/or –O groups are classified as acid dyes. However, such compounds are electron pair donors and hence Brönsted-Lowry and Lewis anionic bases. Dyes carrying a positive charge are termed basic dyes. Chemically, many cationic dyes are Lewis acids because they can add a base, e.g. OH, acetate, halides. The hypothesis that transformation of –NH2 into ammonium groups imparts basic properties to dyes is untenable; ammonium groups are proton donors and hence acids. Furthermore, conversion of an amino into an ammonium group blocks a lone electron pair and the color of the dye changes drastically, e.g. from violet to green and yellow. It appears therefore highly unlikely that ammonium groups are responsible for binding of cationic (basic) dyes. In histochemistry, it is usually not of critical importance whether anionic or cationic dyes are chemically acids or bases. It is therefore suggested to substitute the terms anionic for acid and cationic for basic dyes; this nomenclature will always be chemically correct.

Summary The Y/F ratio was established in 128 mentally disordered offenders in a maximum security hospital. The 50 Y/F 0.90 subjects were compared with the 78 Y/F<0.90 subjects as regards intelligence and behaviour. With the exception of the highest frequency of intelligence quotients lower than 70 in the criminal patients Y/F 0.90, no statistical correlation exists to support the theory of a relation between a long Y chromosome and the type of psychiatric (psychopathy, psychosis) or criminality diagnosis.

Summary Recombinant cDNA plasmids possessing the coding sequences for the -type gliadins were isolated from a cDNA library prepared from wheat seed poly (A+) RNA. One of these plasmids, pGliB48, specifically hybridizes to poly (A+) RNA molecules 1 400–1 500 bases in length that direct the synthesis of polypeptides at 38 Kd and 46 Kd, the latter size characteristic of the -type gliadins. The cDNA sequence of pGliB48 was determined and encompasses the 3 untranslated region as well as 245 amino acids from the C-terminus of the -type gliadin polypeptide. The 5-end of the DNA coding sequence consists of a tandem repeat unit composed of eight amino acids. Localized regions of homology are observed for the /-type and -type gliadin cDNA sequences.

High tree alpha-diversity in Amazonian Ecuador
In a 1 ha square plot of terra firme forest at 260 m elevation in Amazonian Ecuador, all trees with diameter at breast height (dbh) 5 cm were studied. There were 1561 individuals, 473 species, 187 genera and 54 families. Of these, 693 individuals, 307 species, 138 genera and 46 families had a dbh 10 cm. This is the highest number of tree species ever recorded for a tropical rain forest sample of this size. In both dbh classes, the most species-rich families were: Fabaceae sensu lato (including Mimosaceae and Caesalpiniaceae), Lauraceae and Sapotaceae; the most species-rich genera, were Pouteria, Inga and Protium. The vertical space was partitioned among species: 166 species were found only in the 5–10 dbh cm class and were mostly sub-canopy treelets, and 307 species with dbh 10 cm were mostly large canopy trees.

Physiognomy, structure and floristic composition of one hectare of lowland tropical rain forest was studied in detail at Los Tuxtlas, Mexico. Physiognomically, the Los Tuxtlas forest should be classified as lowland tropical high evergreen rain forest. The forest showed a closed canopy at 30–35 m. Of all woody, non-climbing species with a DBH1.0 cm 89.4% (94.5% of all individuals) were evergreen, 25.4% (59.5% of the individuals) had compound leaves, and over 80% of species (and individuals) had leaves in the notophyll and mesophyll size classes. The forest structure was characterized by a low density (2976 individuals with a DBH1.0 cm, 346 individuals with a DBH10.0 cm, per ha, excluding vines) with an average basal area (38.1 m2, DBH1.0 cm, 34.9 m2, DBH10.0 cm, per ha, excluding vines). This was attributed to the relative maturity of the forest on the study plot. The study plot contained 234 species (11 208 individuals with a height 0.5 m), of which 55.1% (34.8% of individuals) were trees, 9.4% (6.8%) shrubs, 3.4% (44.3%) palms, 20.1% (5.2%) vines, 6.8% (8.7%) herbs and 5.1% (0.3%) of unknown lifeform. Furthermore, 58 species of epiphytes and hemi-epiphytes were found. Diversity of trees, shrubs and palms with a DBH1.0 cm was calculated as Shannon-Wiener index (4.65), Equitability index (0.65), and Simpson index (0.10). The dominance-diversity curve showed a lognormal form, characteristic for tropical rain forest. The community structure was characterized by a relative dominance of Astrocaryum mexicanum in the understorey, Pseudolmedia oxyphyllaria in the middle storeys, and Nectandra ambigens in the canopy. Species population structures of 31 species showed three characteristic patterns, differentiated by recruitment: continuously high, discontinuously high, and continuously low recruitment. Height/diameter and crown cover/diameter diagrams suggested a very gradual shift from height growth to crown growth during tree development. Forest turnover was calculated as 138 years. Compared to other tropical rain forests the Los Tuxtlas forest had 1. similar leaf physiognomical characteristics, 2. a lower diversity, 3. a lower density, 4. an average basal area, and 5. a slow canopy turnover.

We characterized stand structure and floristic composition of woody life forms in three, 16–18 yr old secondary stands that regenerated after pasture abandonment, and three nearby old-growth stands of tropical rain forest in lowland Costa Rica. Basal area and stem density for each of four plant size classes (seedlings, saplings, treelets, trees) were similar among stand types, but density of adult canopy palms (individuals 10 cm DBH), was lower in the secondary stands. We estimate that 15% of the basal area of stems 10 cm DBH correspond to remnant trees in our secondary stands. The observed rapid woody regrowth compared to other published studies in the lowland neotropics, can be attributed to moderate land use and possibly, to the influence of nutrient-rich volcanic soils in the study area. Overall, plant species richness was lower in the secondary stands, but this difference was less pronounced in the smallest size classes (seedlings, saplings). Median percent similarity of all pairwise stand comparisons showed that floristic composition of saplings (stems 1 m tall and 5 cm DBH) was more similar between secondary and old-growth stands than for trees (stems 10 cm DBH). Because the potential value of secondary forests in conserving woody plant diversity appears highest for the young size classes, we suggest that further studies on floristic composition, especially those addressing the dynamics of the understory component, are needed to refine our understanding of the role of this natural resource in the maintenance of plant biodiversity in disturbed landscapes.

Summary The authors examined interleukin-2 (IL-2) production and interferon (IFN) production of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in 28 patients with renal cell carcinoma and 17 control subjects. The peripheral blood was obtained prior to the initiation of therapeutic procedures. The patients were divided into two groups according to tumor size, 5 cm and >5 cm. The production of IL-2 and IFN was measured by immunoradiometric assay. As a result, in the patients with tumors >5 cm, IL-2 and IFN production was impaired. However, in the patients with tumors 5 cm, IFN production was enhanced, though IL-2 production was not significantly different from that of the control subjects. There was no significant correlation between IL-2 production and IFN production.

Summary The influence of superparasitism on larval and pupal development is investigated. Last-larval instar G. mellonella (200±5 mg) were infected with 1, 2, 3 or 5 planidia/host (pl/H) producing 1 to 5 pupae per host (pu/H). Host mortality (8.6–8.3–14.3 and 22.2%) increased with the number of planidia. The planidia may transmit a bacteriosis. Pupal weight ( and ) decreased as number of pu/H increased. pupae were heavier than ones: 12.9 to 18.2 mg for against 9.7 to 12.5 mg for . Larval development lasted slightly longer for (8.7 d.) than for (8.3 d.), and its duration was little affected by superparasitism. 1, 2, 3 or 5 pl/H yielded 0.84–1.61–2.17 and 3.43 pu/H and 0.81–1.48–2.10 and 3.11 adults/H. An optimum was obtained with 3 planidia of L. diatraeae on G. mellonella or 1 to 2 to obtain heavier parasitoids.

The main contribution of this paper is to propose a new cluster maintenance algorithm and a companion cluster initialization algorithm based on a number of interesting and novel properties of diameter-2 graphs. The initialization algorithm naturally blends into cluster maintenance, showing the unity between these two operations. We refer to our algorithms as tree-based since they depend on a spanning tree maintained at various nodes. Unlike the vast majority of published clustering algorithms, our algorithms are cluster-centric, as opposed to node-centric, and work in the presence of node mobility. Extensive simulation results have shown the effectiveness of our algorithms when compared to other clustering schemes proposed in the literature.Lan Wang received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer science from Harbin Engineering University, China in 1992 and 1995, respectively.
Agonistic behaviour, territorial behaviour and courtship display of the Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax)
Summary From 1980 to 1984 studies were made of the agonistic, territorial and courtship behaviour of the Little Bustard in Southern France and Portugal. The behaviour patterns are described in detail, the signals involved are analysed, and factors which could have led to their evolution are discussed. In the reproductive period agonistic encounters between males happen remarkably often. Aggressive excitement is expressed in both sexes by compression of the neck-feathers and stretching of the neck, and in the female by the erection and lateral folding of the tail-feathers. There are several kinds of threat behaviour in territorial encounters: running or flying towards intruders; lateral threat behaviour (if both males are of similar strength); and bill-fighting which only occurs if aggressive behaviour of a lower intensity has not led to the submission of one of the rivals. Calling is a territorial behaviour and serves to mark a territory. The frequency of calls is not affected by the presence of females, but the presence of other males close to the territory borders can result in a marked increase in calling frequency. In addition to the acoustic signal, the call involves a sharp neck-jerk which may act as an optical signal, at least over short distances. In flight males produce a whistling sound by means of the specially adapted 7th primary feather on their wings. This sound has important meaning in intraspecific communication during the reproductive period: it announces a flying male to other males as well as to females, and causes territorial and aggressive behaviour, or fleeing of these birds. The flight sound is also an important element of the behaviour patterns territorial wingbeat display and jumping display. Within their territories males always fly with the neck raised at a slight angle and with suppressed, shallow wing-beats. Two interpretations of this flight are discussed: that it serves to advertise the conspicuously coloured neck-feathers in a display; or that it is a search flight for locating and chasing-off intruders.Territorial wingbeat display begins with an accelerating foot-stamping and leads into a call. During the call the male performs three very fast, whistling wing-beats but remains on the ground. The combined elements, foot-stamping, calling and whistling wings, produce a unique and distinctive acoustic signal. The foot-stamping is only performed at special display sites where the sound is amplified by the substrate structure. At such sites, the soil typically has trapped pockets of air below a compacted surface which may result from the repeated defecating and stamping of the male on the same spot. Territorial wingbeat display behaviour is only performed for short periods in low light intensities at dawn and dusk. The presence of females has no effect on the intensity of the behaviour which serves a territorial function. It is interpreted to be a ritualisation of the aggressive running or flying of a territorial male towards an intruder. Optical elements of this behaviour cannot have much importance because the body and wings of the bird are rarely visible above the vegetation. Territorial wingbeat display behaviour cannot be seen over long distances and from this reason cannot serve to attract females into a males territory.Jumping display is only performed at much higher light intensities than territorial wingbeat display so the two never occur at the same time of day. The intensity of the behaviour increases markedly in the presence of females in sharp contrast to the territorial wingbeat display. The jumping display is performed in a similar way to the territorial wingbeat display except that the foot-stamping is much less intensive, the wing-beats are slower, and the bird jumps off the ground during the wing-beats. During the jumping display the black and white patterns on the body and wings are clearly visible and the behaviour increases the conspicuousness of the male markedly. The jump, advertising the wing-pattern up to a height of 65 cm, together with the specific location of the display site, ensures that maximum visibility of the male above the vegetation is achieved at minimum energetic cost. Activities of the females and their interactions with males during the jumping periods indicate that this behaviour serves to attract females to the males territory. The chasing of females is also a courtship behaviour and serves in stimulating and preparing females for copulation. In a characteristic posture with the head retracted into the neck-collar, the male rapidly runs behind the female, repeatedly stopping abruptly and calling whilst throwing its head and body sideways. Copulations are performed very quickly and only happen after a female has been chased for some time. Under certain preconditions chasing suppresses the aggressive and defence behaviour of the female which normally characterises encounters with males, and thus leads to readiness for copulation. Copulation itself removes this effect and after only one or two seconds aggression leads to the escape of the female.
