We investigated geographic differences in the host specificity of Epilachna niponica Lewis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). The Yuwaku population feeds mainly on Cirsium matsumurae Nakai (Asteraceae) and secondarily on Cirsrium kagamontanum Nakai. The Asiu population, located 150 km away from the Yuwaku, feeds exclusively on C. ashiuense Yokoyama et T. Shimizu. Under laboratory conditions, we examined the differences between the two populations in adult feeding acceptance, adult feeding preference, and larval performance, using several closely related thistle species and varieties, including their native hosts. In the Asiu population, adult beetles clearly avoided the host of the Yuwaku population, C. kagamontanum, and no larvae were able to complete their development, whereas in the Yuwaku population, adults accepted and even preferred it to some other thistle species, and about 10% of first instar larvae became adults. This indicates that the Yuwaku population evolved its feeding preference and physiological adaptation to C. kagamontanum through a utilization of this low‐ranked host under natural conditions. Apart from C. kagamontanum, the two populations showed a similar host susceptibility pattern, indicating that this ladybird beetle has a conserved hierarchy in feeding preference and growth performance. We also observed adult leaf choice behavior when given different thistle species, and found that difference in biting rate after palpation determined the leaf areas consumed, implying that factors on the leaf surface played an important role in the choice.  相似文献

  1. A field study was carried out on the population dynamics of a thistle-feeding lady beetle, Henosepilachna pustulosa (Kôno ) living in a cool temperature climax forest in northern Kyoto Prefecture, central Japan.
  2. Intensive marking, release and recapture program was carried out to estimate the adult population parameters by usingJolly-Seber method.
  3. Sampling ratio was around 50%. Marking ratio rapidly rised as the census progressed and approached to 100%.
  4. Sex ratio (% ♀) was 63–69% in both overwintered and new adults.
  5. Daily survival rate was as high as 0.95 or more and constant throughout the season. Adult longevity in the spring was longer than 40 days.
  6. Reproductive rate i. e., the ratio of the number of newly emerged adults in a given generation to that of overwintered adults in the preceding generation, is very small, ranging 1–3, whereas winter survival is higher than 50%, consequently the size of populations in the study area remain in a remarkably constant size and it never reached a level where intraspesific competition occurred.
  7. The population characteristics of H. pustulosa are compared with those of the two closely related species, H. vigintioctopunctata and H. vigintioctomaculata, which are the pests of Solanaceous crops. Hp is more K-strategic than the two pest species.

Using constant heat sap flow sensors, xylem water fluxes in ten tree species and two liana species were monitored for 5–10 days during the beginning of the wet season in May, 1993. For a subset of the trees, a branch was also monitored at the top of the crown for 5 days. Xylem flux (J S) was related diurnally in all plants to vapor pressure deficit (D) measured within the upper-third of the canopy, and to incoming shortwave radiation R S above the canopy. Cross-correlation analysis was used to estimate time lags between diurnal patterns of J S and D or R S, and between J S in stems and branches. The maximum correlation coefficient from cross-correlation of J S with R S (range=0.57–0.92) was often higher than the maximum of J S with D (range=0.43–0.89), indicating that diurnal J S was more dependent on R S than D. Time lags (lag corresponding to maximum correlation) of J S at stem-base with D was shorter (0–45 min) than with radiation (5–115 min), highly variable within a species, and uncorrelated to the height or exposure of tree crowns or liana in the canopy. On a stand level, not accounting for the diel lag between stem sap flux and canopy flux resulted in errors in estimated canopy transpiration of up to 30%.  Many members of the Solanaceae display a type of gametophytic self-incompatibility which is controlled by a single multiallelic locus, called the S-locus. From our previous survey of more than 100 natural populations of Petunia axillaris (a solanaceous species) in Uruguay, we had found that the majority of the populations of subspecies axillaris were comprised of virtually all self-incompatible individuals. The rest were ”mixed populations” which contained mostly self-incompatible and some self-compatible individuals. In this study, we examined the self-incompatibility behavior and determined the S-genotypes of 33 plants raised from seeds obtained from one such mixed population, designated U1. We found that 30 of the 33 plants (designated U1–1 through U1–33) were self-incompatible and a total of 18 different S-alleles were represented. To determine the S-genotypes of the three self-compatible plants (U1–2, U1–16, and U1–22) and the possible causes for the breakdown of their self-incompatibility, we carried out reciprocal crosses between each of them and each of the 18 S-homozygotes (S 1 S 1 through S 18 S 18 ) obtained from bud-selfed progeny of 14 of the 30 self-incompatible plants. For U1–2 and U1–16, we also carried out additional crosses with U1–25 (with S 1 S 13 genotype) and an S 13 S 15 plant (obtained from a cross between an S 13 -homozygote and an S 15 -homozygote), respectively. Based on all the pollination results and analysis of the production of S-RNases, products of S-alleles in the pistil, we determined the S-genotypes of U1–2, U1–16, and U1–22, and propose that the breakdown of self-incompatibility in these three plants is caused by suppression of the production of S13-RNase from the S 13 -allele they all carry. We investigated the influence of stand density [938 tree ha−1 for high stand density (HD), 600 tree ha−1 for medium stand density (MD), and 375 tree ha−1 for low stand density (LD)] on soil CO2 efflux (R S) in a 70-year-old natural Pinus densiflora S. et Z. forest in central Korea. Concurrent with R S measurements, we measured litterfall, total belowground carbon allocation (TBCA), leaf area index (LAI), soil temperature (ST), soil water content (SWC), and soil nitrogen (N) concentration over a 2-year period. The R S (t C ha−1 year−1) and leaf litterfall (t C ha−1 year−1) values varied with stand density: 6.21 and 2.03 for HD, 7.45 and 2.37 for MD, and 6.96 and 2.23 for LD, respectively. In addition, R S was correlated with ST (R 2 = 0.77–0.80, P < 0.001) and SWC (R 2 = 0.31–0.35, P < 0.001). It appeared that stand density influenced R S via changes in leaf litterfall, LAI and SWC. Leaf litterfall (R 2 = 0.71), TBCA (R 2 = 0.64–0.87), and total soil N contents in 2007 (R 2 = 0.94) explained a significant amount of the variance in R S (P < 0.01). The current study showed that stand density is one of the key factors influencing R S due to the changing biophysical and environmental factors in P. densiflora.  相似文献

In May 1971, 45 adults of an herbivorous lady beetleEpilachna niponica (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) from Asiu Experimental Forest were introduced into a botanical garden of Kyoto University, where is 10 km south of the southern limits of its distribution with being 3–5°C warmer than the original site. The introduced population of the lady beetle was thus investigated from 1975 to 1981. Mark-release-recapture experiments were applied to individual adult beetles, to estimate population size and daily survival rate. Overwintering adults emerged from hibernation around early April, reaching peak numbers in late April to early May, then gradually declined to late June. No adults remained at the end of June. Adult survival was maintained at a high level to early May, and declined consistently until late in the reproductive season. New adults began to emerge in late June and quickly reached a peak in early July; thereafter they decreased in number and had entered hibernation by late October. In spite of seasonally deteriorating food resources and heat stress in summer, new adults showed moderately high survival during the inimical period. New adults which emerged later in the season tended to be smaller in body size than those that emerged early. The proportion of females in the new adult population gradually increased throughout the pre-hibernating period, suggesting that male-biased mortality occurred during this period. When compared to the source population, the introduced population had a higher rate of population growth. Coupled with the improved population growth, heavy leaf damage during the larval period suggested that intensive intraspecific competition was most likely to occur among larvae in the introduced population.  相似文献

Berchemiella wilsonii var. pubipetiolata (Rhamnaceae) is an endangered tree in eastern China. Habitat destruction has resulted in fragmentation of remnant populations and extinction of local populations. AFLP and cpDNA markers were used to determine the population structure of remnant populations of B. wilsonii var. pubipetiolata. Moderate nuclear genomic diversity was found within each of the four remnant populations (H S = 0.141–0.172), while the cpDNA haplotype diversity in each population ranged from 0.356 to 0.681. Six haplotypes were identified by a combined cpRFLP and cpSSR analysis in a total of 89 individuals. AMOVA revealed significantly AFLP genetic differentiation within and between regions (ΦSC = 0.196, ΦCT = 0.396, respectively), and a high cpDNA haplotype differentiation between regions (ΦCT = 0.849). The results suggest low gene flow between populations of B. wilsonii var. pubipetiolata. Strong genetic divergence between two regional populations as revealed by both AFLP and cpDNA markers provided convincing evidence that two distinct evolutionary lineages existed, and should be recognized as ‘evolutionary significant units’ (ESUs) for conservation concerns.  相似文献

Surfactin is a lipopeptide produced by Bacillus subtilis which possesses antimicrobial activity. We have studied the leakage and lysis of POPC vesicles induced by surfactin using calcein fluorescence de-quenching, isothermal titration calorimetry and 31P solid state NMR. Membrane leakage starts at a surfactin-to-lipid ratio in the membrane, R b ≈ 0.05, and an aqueous surfactin concentration of C Sw ≈ 2 μM. The transient, graded nature of leakage and the apparent coupling with surfactin translocation to the inner leaflet of the vesicles, suggests that this low-concentration effect is due to a bilayer-couple mechanism. Different permeabilization behaviour is found at R b ≈ 0.15 and attributed to surfactin-rich clusters, which can induce leaks and stabilize them by covering their hydrophobic edges. Membrane lysis or solubilization to micellar structures starts at R bsat = 0.22 and C Sw = 9 μM and is completed at R msol = 0.43 and C Sw = 11 μM. The membrane–water partition coefficient of surfactin is obtained as K = 2 × 104 M−1. These data resolve inconsistencies in the literature and shed light on the variety of effects often referred to as detergent-like effects of antibiotic peptides on membranes. Berchemiella wilsonii var. pubipetiolata (Rhamnaceae) is an endangered plant with only four remnant populations in eastern China. Population genetic information is essential for understanding population history and formulating conservation strategies for this species. Thirteen microsatellite loci were used to investigate genetic variation and population structure of the four remnant populations. Moderate levels of expected heterozygosity (H E = 0.466–0.543) and low allelic diversity (A = 3.1–3.6 and A R = 2.2–2.4, respectively) were observed within populations. Bottleneck tests found three out of four populations to deviate from mutation-drift equilibrium under the two-phase model (TPM), suggesting a recent population decline, which is congruent with known demographic history. The evolutionary history of the species seems dominated by genetic drift rather than gene flow. Low historical gene flow was inferred from several different approaches and N m ranged from 0.582 by the private allele method to 0.783 by the coalescent method. Contemporary gene flow was also found to be even lower for only one first generation migrant was detected with individual-based assignment analysis. Restricted pollen and seed dispersal as well as a recent decline in population size associated with habitat fragmentation may have contributed to low levels of historical and contemporary gene flow, and resulted in a high genetic differentiation. Under this scenario, Berchemiella wilsonii var. pubipetiolata populations are expected to display more pronounced population genetic structure in the future as a result of increased inbreeding and genetic drift.  相似文献

The effect of complexation of irbesartan (IRB), a practically water-insoluble drug, with cyclodextrins in presence of different concentrations of water-soluble polymers (PEG 4000 and PVP K-90) on the dissolution rate of the drug has been investigated. Phase solubility studies were carried out to evaluate the solubilizing power of βCD in association with water-soluble polymers towards IRB and to determine the apparent stability constant (K S) of the complexes. Improvement in K S value for ternary complexes (IRB–βCD–polymers) clearly proved the benefit on the addition of water-soluble polymer to increase complexation efficiency. The dissolution rate of the drug from ternary systems containing PEG 4000 and PVP K-90 was higher as compared to the binary system. An optimum increase in the dissolution rate of the drug was observed at a polymer concentration of 5% w/w for PVP K-90 and 10% w/w for PEG 4000. DSC, FTIR, SEM, and XRD studies were carried out to characterize the complexes.  相似文献

 To evaluate the effect of balancing selection and intragenic recombination (or gene conversion) at six individual HLA loci, synonymous nucleotide diversity in different exon groups is examined within (πw) and between (πb) allelic lineages that may be defined by either serological or DNA sequence differences. Both π values are high in exons which encode for the peptide binding region (PBR) and tend to decrease in other exons. The value of πw is significantly smaller than that of πb in any exon of any locus. However, even πw is much greater than nucleotide diversity at non-HLA loci. These observations provide additional strong evidence for the operation of balancing selection in PBR-encoding exons and its indirect effects on polymorphism at linked neighboring regions. It appears that allelic lineages have generally evolved in isolation but the linkage relationships within and between exons are incomplete throughout the long evolutionary history. To quantify intragenic recombination and account for the large discrepancy between the HLA and non-HLA diversity, a population genetics model is analyzed with special reference to the evolution of modern humans. The analysis suggests that the recombination rate between two sites 1000 base pairs apart is about 10–5 per generation and that the effective size of human populations (equivalent roughly to the number of breeding individuals in a randomly mating population) has dropped from 105 to 104 in most of the Quaternary.  CW ENDOR (X-band) spectra for the purple mixed-valence [Cu(1.5+)...Cu(1.5+)], S = 1/2, CuA site in nitrous oxide reductase were obtained after insertion of 65Cu or both 65Cu and 15N-histidine. The 14N/15N isotopic substitution allowed for an unambiguous deconvolution of proton and nitrogen hyperfine couplings in the spectra. A single nitrogen coupling with a value of 12.9 ± 0.4 MHz for 14N was detected. Its anisotropy was characteristic for imidazole bound to copper. A spin density of 3–5% was estimated for the nitrogen donors to CuA, indicating that the ground state is 2B3u. Proton hyperfine structure was detected from four Cβ protons of coordinating cysteine residues. Their isotropic and anisotropic parts were deconvoluted by spectral simulation. From the anisotropic couplings a spin density of 16–24% was estimated for each of the cysteine thiolate donors of CuA. The [NHisCu(RS)2CuNHis]+ core structure of CuA in nitrous oxide reductase from Pseudomonas stutzeri is predicted to be similar to the crystallographically determined CuA* structure (Wilmanns M, Lappalainen P, Kelly M, Sauer-Eriksson E, Saraste M (1995) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 92 : 11955–11959), but distinct from the CuA structure of Paracoccus denitrificans cytochrome c oxidase (Iwata S, Ostermeier C, Ludwig B, Michel H (1995) Nature 376 : 660–669). The angular dependence of the isotropic couplings as a function of the electronic ground state was calculated by the INDO/S method. The Mulliken atomic-spin populations calculated by a gradient-corrected density functional method and the semiempirical INDO/S method were compared with experimentally derived spin populations, and good agreement between theory and experiment was found for both calculations. The ground state of CuA is best represented by the resonance structures of the form [CuISSCuII↔ CuISSCuI↔ CuISSCuI↔ CuIISSCuI].  The interaction of the two chiral isomers of the new anticancer agent [Pt(ampyr)(cbdca)] (ampyr=aminomethylpyrrolidine, cbdca=cyclobutanedicarboxylate) with 5′-GMP and with short G-containing oligonucleotides has been studied using 1H and 31P NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy and molecular modelling. Each isomer loses the cbdca ligand upon binding to the DNA fragments. Two geometrical isomers of the DNA adducts are formed owing to the presence of the unsymmetric ampyr ligand. These isomers prove to be GG-N7,N7 chelates for d(GpG), d(pGpG) and d(CpGpG). A slight preference for the formation of one geometrical isomer is found in the case of DNA fragments having a phosphate moiety and/or a C base at the 5′-site of the GG sequence. H-bonding interactions from the NH2 moiety towards the 5′-phosphate group and/or the O atom of the C base clearly favour the formation of one geometrical isomer. The presence of these H-bonds, together with the bulky pyrrolidine ring, has resulted in the unique observation (by 1H NMR) of NH protons of coordinated amines that do not rapidly exchange in a 99.95% D2O solution. Temperature-dependence studies show an extremely slow stack ⇄ destack conformational change for the CGG adducts of the S isomer, which could be related to these stable H-bonds of the amine protons towards the oligonucleotide. For the R isomer this stack ⇄ destack conformational change is faster, probably owing to more steric hindrance of the pyrrolidine ring as deduced from the NOESY data, and as also suggested by molecular modelling. The observation of extremely slow rotation around the Pt-N7 bond for [Pt(R-ampyr)(GMP-N7)2] provides further evidence for increased steric hindrance of the R isomer compared to the S isomer. The rate of binding of the drug to G bases proved to be second order for both isomers; in fact the (toxic) S isomer is about two times more reactive than the (non-toxic) R isomer, as seen from k 2 values of 0.17±0.01 M–1 s–1 for [Pt(S-ampyr)(cbdca)] and 0.09±0.01 M–1 s–1 for [Pt(R-ampyr)(cbdca)]. No solvent-assisted pathway is involved in these reactions, since the complexes prove to be stable in solution for weeks and therefore only a direct attack of the G base on the Pt must be involved. Because hardly any intermediate species can be detected during the reaction, coordination of the second G base must occur much faster than the binding of the first G base. Since direct attack of the nucleobases takes place, steric interactions become extremely important and therefore are likely to determine the reactivity, activity and even the toxicity of such Pt complexes. To investigate annual variation in soil respiration (R S) and its components [autotrophic (R A) and heterotrophic (R H)] in relation to seasonal changes in soil temperature (ST) and soil water content (SWC) in an Abies holophylla stand (stand A) and a Quercus-dominated stand (stand Q), we set up trenched plots and measured R S, ST and SWC for 2 years. The mean annual rate of R S was 436 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, ranging from 76 to 1,170 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, in stand A and 376 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, ranging from 82 to 1,133 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, in stand Q. A significant relationship between R S and its components and ST was observed over the 2 years in both stands, whereas a significant correlation between R A and SWC was detected only in stand Q. On average over the 2 years, R A accounted for approximately 34% (range 17–67%) and 31% (15–82%) of the variation in R S in stands A and Q, respectively. Our results suggested that vegetation type did not significantly affect the annual mean contributions of R A or R H, but did affect the pattern of seasonal change in the contribution of R A to R S.  相似文献

Genetic diversity in wild wheats and goat grass   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The genetic structure of 35 populations of wild relatives of cultivated wheats, all collected in Syria and Lebanon, was assessed using ten isozymes. The populations consisted of diploid goat grass, Aegilops speltoides, diploid wild wheats, Triticum monococcum spp. aegilopoides and T. urartu, and tetraploid wild wheat, T. turgidum ssp. dicoccoides. The majority of the populations were polymorphic (P=0–70%) having low within-population mean genetic diversity (Hep=0.05–0.10) and relatively high within-species genetic diversity (Hes=0.14–0.31). The linkage between loci did not seem to be one of the causes for the observed polymorphism. All four species showed significant inbreeding at both the population (0.31–0.64) and species (0.77–0.96) levels, and the extent of inbreeding did not correlate with mating systems. Despite their apparent common ecological and evolutionary history, between-population or between-species level genetic identity was low (I=0.43–0.86). Among the diploid species, populations of Ae. speltoides clustered distinctly from those overlapping clusters of T. monococcum ssp. aegilopoides and T. urartu. The tetraploid species T. turgidum ssp. dicoccoides had relatively less genetic diversity (Hes=0.14) and was highly homozygous (F=0.96). The results suggest that these wild progenitors of cultivated wheats have undergone extensive local differentiation and inbreeding. Genetic variation in 12 Pinus pinaster (maritime pine) populations spanning most of the distribution range of the species in Portugal was evaluated using six polymorphic chloroplast microsatellite (cpSSR) loci. Thirty-two haplotypes were found. There were indications of very weak differentiation among populations (Weir’s θcoefficient, 0.023), and the R ST value, derived from the stepwise mutation model (SMM), was not significantly different from zero. The pattern, in which similarities in allele size, in base pairs, do not contribute to the genetic structure, may be due to the recent mixing of genetic material from different stands through plantations. Overall, a high level of haplotypic variation within populations was detected. Using the SMM estimator (mean genetic distance of individuals within populations, D 2 sh –––) we divided the populations into two groups, with above and below average values. The first group contained 5 populations, mainly from the central part of the country, which possess, in general, high levels of haplotypic diversity. Among them, 2 populations were divergent from the others based on the pair-wise Nei’s distance. The results indicate that there is no discernible geographic genetic pattern for the Portuguese populations of P. pinaster investigated. The history of expansion of the species range in Portugal during the twentieth century (mainly due to human activity) and extensive gene flow among populations associated with the expansion could explain this finding. Spatiotemporal variation in reproductive rates is a common phenomenon in many wildlife populations, but the population dynamic consequences of spatial and temporal variability in different components of reproduction remain poorly understood. We used 43 years (1962–2004) of data from 17 locations and a capture–mark–recapture (CMR) modeling framework to investigate the spatiotemporal variation in reproductive parameters of yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris), and its influence on the realized population growth rate. Specifically, we estimated and modeled breeding probabilities of two-year-old females (earliest age of first reproduction), >2-year-old females that have not reproduced before (subadults), and >2-year-old females that have reproduced before (adults), as well as the litter sizes of two-year old and >2-year-old females. Most reproductive parameters exhibited spatial and/or temporal variation. However, reproductive parameters differed with respect to their relative influence on the realized population growth rate (λ). Litter size had a stronger influence than did breeding probabilities on both spatial and temporal variations in λ. Our analysis indicated that λ was proportionately more sensitive to survival than recruitment. However, the annual fluctuation in litter size, abetted by the breeding probabilities, accounted for most of the temporal variation in λ.  The effects of inbreeding on growth, survival and variance in a 12-year-old radiata pine trial were studied in five populations each inbred to one of five different levels: outcross (F=0), half-sib (F=0.125), full-sib (F=0.25), selfing (S1, F=0.5), and two-generations of selfing (S2, F=0.75). These five populations were derived from a founder population of eight clones. Inbreeding reduced diameter, growth, and survival but increased the variance for diameter. Inbreeding depression at F=0.125, 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 was 5%, 6%, 15%, and 19% respectively for DBH; −3%, 1%, 7%, and 11% respectively, for survival. The standard deviation for diameter increased by 10%, 10%, 30%, and 25% respectively for F=0.125, 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 and, similarly, the coefficient of variation increased by 17%, 16%, 53%, and 55% respectively. There were significant differences among the eight founder clones in their response to inbreeding. The best clone in the trial showed no inbreeding depression. Overall, inbreeding depression was found to be linearly related to the inbreeding coefficient F with no significant quadratic effects for any trait at any population level. However, two individual clones had a quadratic relationship with F for DBH and one clone had a similar relationship for survival. A significant correlation (r=0.96) between S2 and the breeding values of founder clones was observed while the correlation (r=0.58) between S1 and breeding values was insignificant. The low inbreeding depression in radiata pine relative to other conifers may indicate that historical purging of detrimental alleles through small geographic populations, a higher degree of population subdivision, and the relative high fecundity of inbred progenies has rendered radiata pine an ideal species to use inbreeding as a breeding tool. However, an understanding of the potential genetic consequences of mixing populations requires an understanding of the genetic variation within, and similarities among, donor and recipient populations. Genetic diversity was measured using two independent marker systems (microsatellites and AFLPs) for one island and four small remnant mainland populations of Setonix brachyurus, a threatened medium sized macropod restricted to fragmented habitat remnants and two off-shore islands in southwest Australia. Microsatellite diversity in the island population (R s = 3.2, H e = 71%) was similar to, or greater than, all mainland populations (R s = 2.1–3.9, H e = 34-71%). In contrast, AFLP diversity was significantly lower in the island population (PPL = 20.5; H j = 0.118) compared to all mainland populations (mean PPL = 79.5–89.7; mean H j = 0.23–0.29). Microsatellites differentiated all (mainland and island) populations from each other. However, AFLP only differentiated the island population from the mainland populations—all mainland populations were not significantly differentiated from each other for this marker. Given a known time since isolation of the island population from the mainland (6,000 years ago), and an overall more conservative rate of evolution of AFLP markers, our results are consistent with mainland populations fragmenting thousands of years ago (but <6,000 years), probably as a consequence of reduced rainfall and the constriction of the preferred mesic habitat of quokkas. Our results also support a recent history of severe population bottlenecks in mainland populations, and a long history of bottlenecks of the island population, but reflect a recent explosion in numbers since European occupation of the island. Our results indicate that translocation of island populations to supplement mainland populations would introduce genetically markedly differentiated, and possibly maladapted, individuals.  相似文献

The contributions of circulating angiotensin II (Ang II) and catecholamines to cardiovascular control in the spiny dogfish were investigated by monitoring the effects of exogenous and endogenous dogfish [Asn1, Pro3, Ile5]-Ang II (dfAng II) on plasma catecholamine levels and blood pressure regulation. Bolus intravenous injections of dfAng II (30–1200 pmol kg−1) elicited dose-dependent increases in plasma adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations, caudal artery pressure (P CA), and systemic vascular resistance (R S), and a decrease in cardiac output (Q). Similar injections of Ang II in dogfish pre-treated with the α-adrenoceptor antagonist yohimbine (4 mg kg−1) also elicited dose-dependent increases in plasma catecholamine levels yet the cardiovascular effects were abolished. Dogfish treated with yohimbine were hypotensive and had elevated levels of plasma Ang II and catecholamines. Intravenous injection of the smooth muscle relaxant papaverine (10 mg kg−1) elicited a transient decrease in P CA and R S, and increases in plasma Ang II and catecholamine levels. In dogfish first treated with lisinopril (10−4 mol kg−1), an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, papaverine treatment caused a more prolonged and greater decrease in P CA and R S, an attenuated increase in plasma catecholamines, and no change in plasma Ang II. By itself, lisinopril treatment had little effect on P CA, and no effect on R S, plasma Ang II or catecholamines. In yohimbine-treated dogfish, papaverine treatment elicited marked decreases in P CA, R S, and Q, and increases in plasma Ang II and catecholamines. Among the three papaverine treatments, there was a positive linear relationship between plasma Ang II and catecholamine concentrations, and the cardiovascular and hormonal changes were most pronounced in the yohimbine + papaverine treatment. Therefore, under resting normotensive conditions, while Ang II does not appear to be involved in cardiovascular control, catecholamines play an important role. However, during a hypotensive stress elicited by vascular smooth muscle relaxation, Ang II indirectly contributes to cardiovascular control by dose-dependently stimulating catecholamine release.
