Infections caused by the genus Staphylococcus are of great importance for human health. Staphylococcus species are divided into coagulase-positive staphylococci, represented by S. aureus, a pathogen that can cause infections of the skin and other organs in immunocompetent patients, and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) which comprise different species normally involved in infectious processes in immunocompromised patients or patients using catheters. Oxacillin has been one of the main drugs used for the treatment of staphylococcal infections; however, a large number of S. aureus and CNS isolates of nosocomial origin are resistant to this drug. Methicillin resistance is encoded by the mecA gene which is inserted in the SCC mec cassette. This cassette is a mobile genetic element consisting of five different types and several subtypes. Oxacillin-resistant strains are detected by phenotypic and genotypic methods. Epidemiologically, methicillin-resistant S. aureus strains can be divided into five large pandemic clones, called Brazilian, Hungarian, Iberian, New York/Japan and Pediatric. The objective of the present review was to discuss aspects of resistance, epidemiology, genetics and detection of oxacillin resistance in Staphylococcus spp., since these microorganisms are increasingly more frequent in Brazil.  相似文献

The etiological structure of viral hepatitides among the adult population of Tallinn and the occurrence of markers of hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus infections in medical workers, addict introducing drugs intravenously and hemodialysis patients were studied. Changes in the etiological structure of viral hepatitides were established: they took the form of a decrease in the level of hepatitis A morbidity and the considerable growth of the role of hepatitides B and C, as well as the newly detected circulation hepatitis D virus. About one-third in the structure of morbidity in viral hepatitides were hepatitis cases without markers of hepatitis A, B or C viruses (non-A, non-B, non-C). The highest rates of hepatitis B virus infection (78.9%) and hepatitis C virus infection (82.5%) were detected among drug addicts. Their level of HBsAg was 8.8%. In the group of medical workers, 25% of the examinees, i.e. every fourth person, had markers of hepatitis B virus, while antibodies to hepatitis C virus were detected in 5% of cases. Among hemodialysis patients these rates were 21.4% and 10.7% respectively.  相似文献

With 119 confirmed cases between March 2006 and December 2010, Egypt ranks second among countries reporting human H5N1 influenza virus infections. In 2009–2010, Egypt reported 68 new human cases and became the new epicenter for H5N1 infections. We conducted an epidemiological and molecular analysis in order to better understand the situation in Egypt. The onset of new cases peaked annually during the winter and spring months, with majority of cases reported in the Nile Delta region. Most cases were less than 18 years old (62%) and females (60%). The overall case-fatality rate was 34% and significantly increased by age. There was a significant difference between the case-fatality rates among females and males. We observed a significant drop (p = 0.004) in case fatality rate in 2009 (10%) as compared to higher rates (36%–56%) in other years. Hospitalization within 2 or 3 days after onset of symptoms significantly decreased mortality. Molecular analysis showed that variations do occur among viruses isolated from birds as well as from humans in Egypt, and these mutations were especially noted in 2009 viruses. As the epidemiological profile of Egyptian cases differs from other countries, there is an urgent need to conduct prospective studies to enhance our understanding of incidence, prevalence, and determinants of virulence of human infections with avian H5N1 influenza viruses.  相似文献

Specific epidemiological features of Campylobacter infection in children in Samarkand Province during the period of 1987-1990 are discussed. The specific proportion of this infection in the total structure of acute enteric infections was, on the average, 8.5%, and Campylobacter carriership among healthy children, 7.0%. Among children with Campylobacter infection, children aged up to 1 year constituted 71.5%. The results of the study of the biological properties of Campylobacter strains isolated from sick and healthy children and their difference from strains isolated in other regions are discussed.  相似文献

To verify the validity of thermodynamic approaches to the prediction of cellular behavior, cell spreading of three different cell types on solid substrata was determined in vitro. Solid substrata as well as cell types were selected on the basis of their surface free energies, calculated from contact angle measurements. The surface free energies of the solid substrata ranged from 18–116 erg cm−2. To measure contact angles on cells, a technique was developed in which a multilayer of cells was deposited on a filter and air dried. Cell surface free energies ranged from 60 erg cm−2 for fibroblasts, and 57 for smooth muscle cells, to 91 for HeLa epithelial cells. After adsorption of serum proteins, cell surface free energies of all three cell types converged to approx 74 erg cm−2. The spreading of these cell types from RPMI 1640 medium on the various solid substrata showed that both in the presence and in the absence of serum proteins in the medium, cells spread poorly on low energy substrata (Y s <50 erg cm−2), whereas good cell spreading was observed on the higher energy substrata. Calculations of the interfacial free energy of adhesion (ΔF adh) show that ΔF adh decreases with increasingY s , and equals zero around 45 erg cm−2 for all three cell types in the presence of serum proteins and for HeLa epithelium cells in the absence of serum proteins. This explains the spreading of these cells on the various substrata upon a thermodynamic basis. The results clearly show that substratum surface free energy has a predictive value with respect to cell spreading in vitro, both in the presence and absence of serum proteins. It is noted, however, that interfacial thermodynamics fail to explain the behavior of fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells in the absence of serum proteins, most likely because of the relatively high surface charges of these two cell types.  相似文献

Molecular epidemiology approaches provided for a new interpretation of the TB infection transmission dynamics, contributed to changing the focuses of attention and updated the monitoring practice. On the basis of 101 cases of isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MBT) complex sampled from 84 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in the Siberian region, we proved that the independent methods of IS6110 RFLP genetic typing and VNTR-typing by five accurate repeat tandems of ETR A, B, C, D, and E bring about similar results and can be used in studying the MTB clonal structure population in the Siberian region for the purpose of defining the TB infection transmission dynamics. The most widespread genetic types were detected, i.e. Beeijing family strains, the S42 spoligotype, and the 31323 VNTR type, which account for 52.3% of all samples. The general parameters describing the epidemic process intensity were evaluated, i.e. those characterizing the strains (91.6%) and the transmission activity factor (72%). Consequently, each three of the four analyzed TB cases resulted from a recent transmission. However, there is a trend, within the analyzed samples, towards a higher percentage of clusterization in the age group ranging from 40 to 60. Such trend is typical of a prevalence of TB reactivation cases caused by MBT complex strains spread intensively in the discussed territory. As for the clusterized isolates, which are endemic for the territory, such data should be interpreted as a recent transmission only cautiously. 28.5% of the studied isolates are resistant to anti-TB drugs used in medical practice; and 35.7% of them are resistant to izoniazide and rifampicin, therefore, according to the WHO classification they are considered to be poly-antibiotics-resistant (PAR). No strict associations were found between the spectrum of antibiotics-resistance and any of genotypes, however, 30% of PAR strains are 32525 and 42525 types VNTR (spoligotype S1 or Beejing type).  相似文献

The genetical and molecular biological attributes of Deschampsia antarctica are considered in relation to its remarkable success in the colonization of the maritime Antarctic. However, none of the data from several published research studies provide convincing evidence that this species possess any obvious unique or specialised adaptations which might account for this success. While its occurrence appears to have spanned much of the Holocene, there is no evidence that there have ever been any other native vascular plant species in the maritime Antarctic. It is still unclear why no other taxa have succeeded in colonising this region. Further intensive studies of genetics and molecular biology of this species, and of other potential immigrants, may provide a better understanding of their enigmatic success in the maritime Antarctic.  相似文献

Over the last 2 decades epidemiologists have increasingly used parameters of endocrine function in their studies. Prospective cohort studies offer methodological advantages in view of the latency between the relevant hormonal exposure and the clinical onset of cancer. Examples from the author's experience are provided. Evidence is mounted for an important "time window" for breast cancer development between menarche and the birth of a first child.  相似文献
