The Dutch policy for the care of the elderly has been mainly characterised by the aim to improve the possibility for elderly people to live independently for as long as possible. One measure that has been taken to achieve this goal is the separation of the financing of care from the accommodation in which care is given. Recent discussions have brought to light some possible positive and negative effects of this separation on the use of care. It is, however, largely unknown to what extent there are differences concerning the nature and intensity of care and the type of caregivers provided to dwellers of houses where care and housing are separated (so-called 'life-time houses') and the elderly who live in homes for residential care and nursing homes. To gain insight in this matter an explorative study was conducted in Rotterdam of the use of several health facilities by matching 35 dwellers of 'life-time houses' on the criteria age, health needs and social status with 35 dwellers of residential care homes and nursing homes. On the basis of interviews, questionnaires and patient records data were collected and analysed on the nature and amount of help that has been given (per minute per week) and the kind of caregiver. The main finding is that the use pattern differs between the research groups. Dwellers of 'life-time houses' generally make more use of some care facilities and make more use of different types of care and caregivers. These differences however do not seem to be exclusively caused by the separation of housing and care.  相似文献

It has been argued that male parental care provides direct benefits to females and therefore should be under sexual selection. Given this, we expect signals that honestly indicate the quality of care to be favoured by selection. One such potential signal is care itself. Fish have several features that make them excellent model systems for studying the evolution and dynamics of parental care. We use the flagfish, Jordanella floridae , as a model to evaluate these general ideas. Males of this species guard, clean and fan empty nests and then eggs. Females prefer males that fan more (1) before spawning and (2) when eggs are newly received. When single males and females were paired, males that fanned and visited their nests more prior to spawning were more likely to be mated. Furthermore, among successful males, rates of fanning in the first day after spawning were correlated with the number of eggs received in the future (but not current egg numbers). We then considered whether these two putative signals were correlated and whether males that fan more in these contexts actually have higher egg survivorship. We found no correlation between nest fanning rates before and after spawning and neither 'signal' was predictive of variation in egg survivorship among mated males. We further considered whether pre‐spawning fanning rates were predictive of hatching success in an experiment in which single males were allowed to establish nests and provided eggs. We found little evidence that fanning is an honest signal of care quality and discuss alternative explanations. In particular, we discuss patterns of care elaboration in light of our results.  相似文献

In order to differentiate the neurotic patient who both needs and responds to psychiatric care from the majority of neurotic patients, who do not need this, carefully matched pairs of neurotic patients being treated at psychiatric and nonpsychiatric clinics in Montreal were followed up for 1 year. Improvement was substantial regardless of treatment, and the psychiatrically treated, on the whole, improved only slightly more than the others. However, one type of patient improved greatly under psychiatric care while improving almost not at all without it--introverts who considered themselves unhealthy but found life manageable, had avoided taking time off work or using anxiolytic drugs and appeared to handle their frustrations without repressing their irritation or losing self-control. It is suggested that it is mainly this type of neurotic that should receive specialist referral.  相似文献

Species with paternal care show less exaggerated sexual ornamentation than those in which males do not care, although direct benefits from paternal care can vastly exceed the indirect benefits of mate choice. Whether condition-dependent handicaps can signal parenting ability is controversial. The good-parent process predicts the evolution of honest signals of parental investment, whereas the differential-allocation model suggests a trade-off between the attractiveness of a mate and his care-provisioning. I show that both alternatives can arise from optimal allocations to advertisement, parental investment and future reproductive value of the male, and that the male''s marginal fitness gain from multiple matings determines which option should apply. The marginal gain is diminishing if opportunities for polygyny or extra-pair copulations are limited. Advertisement is then expected to be modest and honest, indicating genetic quality and condition-dependent parental investment simultaneously. Increasing marginal gains are likely to be related to cases where genetic quality has a significant influence on offspring fitness. This alternative leads to differential allocation with stronger advertisement, more frequent extra-pair copulations, and diminished male care. Reliability is also reduced if allocation benefits have thresholds, e.g. if there is a minimum body condition required for survival, or if females use a polygyny-threshold strategy of mate choice.  相似文献

Existing theory predicts that male signalling can be an unreliable indicator of paternal care, but assumes that males with high levels of mating success can have high current reproductive success, without providing any parental care. As a result, this theory does not hold for the many species where offspring survival depends on male parental care. We modelled male allocation of resources between advertisement and care for species with male care where males vary in quality, and the effect of care and advertisement on male fitness is multiplicative rather than additive. Our model predicts that males will allocate proportionally more of their resources to whichever trait (advertisement or paternal care) is more fitness limiting. In contrast to previous theory, we find that male advertisement is always a reliable indicator of paternal care and male phenotypic quality (e.g. males with higher levels of advertisement never allocate less to care than males with lower levels of advertisement). Our model shows that the predicted pattern of male allocation and the reliability of male signalling depend very strongly on whether paternal care is assumed to be necessary for offspring survival and how male care affects offspring survival and male fitness.  相似文献

The significant impact on human and animal health from parasitic infections in tropical regions is well known, but parasites of medical and veterinary importance are also found in the Arctic. Subsistence hunting and inadequate food inspection can expose people of the Arctic to foodborne parasites. Parasitic infections can influence the health of wildlife populations and thereby food security. The low ecological diversity that characterizes the Arctic imparts vulnerability. In addition, parasitic invasions and altered transmission of endemic parasites are evident and anticipated to continue under current climate changes, manifesting as pathogen range expansion, host switching, and/or disease emergence or reduction. However, Arctic ecosystems can provide useful models for understanding climate-induced shifts in host-parasite ecology in other regions.  相似文献
