Better knowledge of food search behaviour in fish is essential for studies that aim to improve longline fishing, particularly through bait development. This review provides an overview of our understanding of how fish detect and locate sources of food odour, focusing on the stimuli and sensory modalities involved, and on factors that affect feeding activity. Studies that identify feeding attractants and efforts to develop alternative longline baits are presented. The review reveals that such studies are few in number, and that to date there are no alternatives to traditional baits in commercial longlining despite the growing demand for these resources, which are also used for human consumption. The chemical compounds that elicit food search behaviour differ from species to species, and species selectivity could be improved by incorporating specific feeding attractants in manufactured baits. The unique properties of chemical stimuli and odour dispersal form the basis for improving longline efficiency through the development of a long-lasting bait. Vision is important in prey capture, and manufactured baits can be made more visible than natural baits by increasing the contrast (e.g. via fluorescent or polarising coatings) and creating motion through buoyancy. Physical properties such as size, shape, texture and strength can also be manipulated in a manufactured bait to improve catch efficiency. Knowledge obtained from studies of various aspects of food search behaviour is of paramount importance for future research aimed at alternative bait development and improving longline fishing.  相似文献

The vine mealybug (VM), Planococcus ficus (Signoret), is a worldwide pest and affects mainly grapevine and figs. In Israel, (S)-lavandulyl senecioate [(S)-LS] and (S)-lavandulyl isovalerate [(S)-LI] were identified from VM reared for several generations on potato sprouts, when compared with the identification of only (S)-LS from feral females. Racemic lavandulyl senecioate (LS) can be used for fieldwork because the unnatural enantiomer is benign and does not affect the activity of the pheromone. Lures loaded with 200  μ g of LS remained active for 24 weeks but it is recommended to replace lures after 12 weeks to preserve constant and high attractiveness. Delta sticky traps, baited with 50 or 200  μ g of LS were used to determine the daily flight pattern and the seasonal flight activity including vine plant infestation. A positive correlation between peak mealybug density and male capture was observed strengthening the usefulness of the pheromone traps for monitoring the pest. Addition of racemic or the two enantiomers of lavandulyl isovalerate (LI) to LS decreased the capture of VM males. The level of inhibition varied during 2003–2004. Both enantiomers of LI displayed the same antagonistic activity. Addition of (S)-lavandulol to the pheromone resulted in shut-down of the traps. Inhibition by the antipode, (R)-lavandulol, was moderate indicating a certain degree of chiral discrimination.  相似文献

Strain differences in the response of German cockroaches to toxic baits and their potential to evolve resistance to them was evaluated in choice tests. Percentage bait consumption (amount of bait consumed divided by total food consumed) was used to estimate relative attractancy/repellency of the baits. One strain apparently had low level resistance to abamectin, but no evidence of resistance was found in other strains tested with either Roach Ender or a gel bait (abamectin-based baits). Incipient behavioral resistance occurred in two strains selected for three generations with Roach Ender; a stronger response in a strain selected with the gel bait is attributed to the development of behavioral resistance. Baygon bait was highly repellent. Low level resistance to propoxur caused a large decrease in mortality compared with susceptible strains. Strong behavioral resistance developed in strains selected with Stapleton's Magnetic Roach Food.  相似文献

Abstract:  Our aim was to test a set of baits and pesticides for the control of yellowjacket populations in NW Patagonia (Argentina), through field trials. We tested the attractiveness of protein (fresh and freeze-dried beef) and carbohydrate (corn syrup and honey) baits (alone and mixed) and three pesticides commonly employed to control terrestrial domestic arthropods (hydramethylnon 2%, permethrin 0.3% and chlorpyrifos 0.25%). Our results show that beef proved to be the most attractive bait tested, for Vespula germanica wasps in NW Patagonia. Honey and corn syrup alone or mixed with beef did not attract foraging wasps as did beef-only baits throughout the wasp season. Additionally, we show that the attractiveness of lyophilized beef baits is similar to that of fresh beef. The efficacy of the insecticides tested was limited. In fact, only baiting with hydramethylnon 2% reduced wasp populations (54%) and this occurred after 72 h since poisoning. However, given the potential of insects to develop resistance to a consistent use of a single product (e.g. fipronil 0.1%), the use of hydramethylnon may allow the alternating of insecticides in specific situations. The information provided here contributes to the existent knowledge on baits and insecticides for the control of yellowjackets using toxic baits.  相似文献

利用大型水分试验场遮雨棚遮档自然降水,采用人工定量补水进水进行冬小麦土壤占田间持量40%-50%、45%-50%、50%-55%、50%-60%、55%-60%、60%-70%持续时间分别为5、10、15d水分胁迫处理的控制试验。试验结果表明:控制结束复水后,50%-60%、55%-70%水分胁迫处理诱发冬小麦根、茎、叶、总生物量显著增长或明显减缓其衰老速率。土壤含水量占田间持水量50%-60%处理,具有明显的增产、节水效率,确定土壤含水量占田间持水量55%为冬小麦拔期水分胁迫应增产节水的水分临界指标。  相似文献

The efficacy of baiting as a pest control method relies on the bait appealing to the pest species. In the case of wood-eating termites, bait stations should be designed to encourage termite presence and to maximize their consumption of bait matrix in order to expedite control in minimal time. A field experiment examined the effect of bait size (one large bait or four small baits of equivalent total size, with commensurate inspection and replacement schedules), compaction (tightly rolled or loosely folded) and composition (paper only or paper plus wood) on termite presence and on untreated bait paper removal rates over four months. All three factors were significant, with bait size the most important factor, followed by compaction and then composition. The least effective baits were small, compacted (rolled) paper-only baits with monthly inspections; these had the highest abandonment rate (70%) and had the least paper removed (mean of 24 g). The most effective baits were large, folded paper-plus-wood baits with inspections at two months; these had the lowest abandonment rate (20%) and had the highest paper removal (mean of 112 g). The more than four-fold difference between these baits types demonstrates that bait efficacy can be altered considerably merely by changing bait design without adding new ingredients to the bait matrix.  相似文献

The advent of the postgenomics era has led to increased interest in exploring the role of gene networks and signaling pathways in controlling plant development. The last two decades have seen a particular increase in the number of studies focusing on the development of the Arabidopsis thaliana root system. However, the investigation of such a seemingly simple system as an Arabidopsis root can lead to problems in quantification and errors in interpretation if knowledge of root organization is lacking. In this article, we identify a number of these problems and give examples of potentially erroneous and correct determinations of lateral root parameters. Our aim is to bring this important issue to the attention of the plant science community and to suggest ways in which the problems inherent in quantifying the process of lateral root development can be avoided.  相似文献

Abstract. The literature relating to the attraction of the sheep blowflies Lucilia sericata and Lucilia cuprina to their ovine hosts is reviewed. The responses of the two species are similar and different components of the behaviour leading to host location and oviposition appear to involve at least two distinct sets of semiochemical cues. Activation, upwind orientation and landing appear to occur in response to putrefactive sulphur-rich volatiles, originating from bacterial decomposition products. Oviposition is elicited primarily by the presence of ammonia-rich compounds; moisture, pheromones and tactile stimuli may also act as oviposition stimuli. There is a pronounced sex difference in the response of Lucilia to semiochemicals with a higher proportion of females attracted than males and a higher proportion of gravid than non-gravid females. While the mechanisms of host location by Lucilia are of intrinsic interest, understanding the responses to semiochemicals is important in the attempt to develop powerful synthetic baits for deployment with the traps or targets used for population sampling or suppression. The literature is discussed with respect to the development of synthetic semiochemical baits.  相似文献

The effects of low and high relative humidity and of polyethylene glycol-induced root water stress on chlorophyll accumulation, on formation of the lamellar chlorophyll-protein complexes, and on the development of photosynthetic activity during chloroplast differentiation were examined. Low relative humidity or polyethylene glycol-induced root water stress (stress conditions) resulted in a 3 to 4 hour lag in chlorophyll accumulation, retarded the rate of chlorophyll b accumulation, and reduced the rate of formation of the light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b protein. All of these effects could be overcome by high relative humidity (nonstress) conditions. Concomitant measurement of leaf water potential showed that under stress conditions greening leaves were subjected to initial water deficits of −8 bars which decreased to −5 bars after 3 to 4 hours of illumination corresponding to the end of the lag phase. Leaves greening under nonstress conditions did not experience leaf water deficits greater than about −5 bars. It seems that the attainment of a minimum leaf water potential of −5 bars may be critical in the control of early chloroplast development. These results demonstrate that the lag phase is not indicative of a programmed event in chloroplast development, but rather is attributable to environmental conditions prevailing during leaf development and greening.  相似文献

Abstract

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are the most common underlying causes of chronic liver injury. They are associated with a wide spectrum of hepatic disorders including basic steatosis, steatohepatitis, and cirrhosis. The molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying hepatic injury in NAFLD and NASH are still unknown. This review describes the roles of oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in the pathogenesis of NAFLD and its progression to NASH.  相似文献

In rats with a unilateral 6-OHDA lesion of the substantia nigra exposure to footshock or immobilization stress produced a long-lasting enhancement in the rotational behavior evoked by a subsequent injection of amphetamine. However, the effect was dependent on the environmental context in which stress was applied. It is suggested that stress may induce enduring changes in brain and behavior similar to those produced by psychomotor stimulant drugs.  相似文献

Toxic and antifertility effects of feeding poison baits of a toxicant-sterilant, alpha-chlorohydrin, were studied against the Indian mole rat Bandicota bengalensis . It was found that 0.5% alpha-chlorohydrin bait was the most palatable formulation which delivered the amount of active ingredient equal to or more than MLD (82 mg/kg) to B. bengalensis in a single day's feeding. The rats suffered maximum mortality with this bait concentration both in no-choice and bi-choice feeding trials. Male survivors of 0.5% and 1.0% alpha-chlorohydrin baits showed functional abnormalities of their testes as revealed by loss in testicular weight, decrease in the diameter of seminiferous tubules and thickness of seminiferous epithelium and abnormally low levels of spermatogenic cells. Effect of the poison on epididymis became apparent by the presence of epididymal lesions in caput epididymides and low levels of sperm concentration, live sperms and sperm motility in the cauda epididymal fluid. Our findings on the acceptance and toxiccum-antifertility effects of feeding alpha-chlorohydrin baits suggest field evaluation of this poison for the management of B. bengalensis would be appropriate.  相似文献

Radiation-induced taste aversion has been suggested to possibly play a role in the dietary difficulties observed in some radiotherapy patients. In rats, these aversions can still be formed even when the radiation exposure precedes the taste experience by several hours. This study was conducted to examine whether increasing the radiation exposure level could extend the range of the exposure-taste interval that would still support the formation of a taste aversion. Separate groups of rats received either a 100 or 300 R gamma-ray exposure followed 1, 3, 6, or 24 h later by a 10-min saccharin (0.1% w/v) presentation. A control group received a sham exposure followed 1 h later by a 10-min saccharin presentation. Twenty-four hours following the saccharin presentation all rats received a series of twelve 23-h two-bottle preference tests between saccharin and water. The results indicated that the duration of the exposure-taste interval plays an increasingly more important role in determining the initial extent of the aversion as the dose decreases. The course of recovery from taste aversion seems more affected by dose than by the temporal parameters of the conditioning trial.  相似文献

Activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis plays a major role in the suppression of the immune system. We have investigated the effects of repetitive stress on Wistar rats infected with the Y strain of Trypanosoma cruzi and a control group that underwent stressor stimuli by exposure to ether vapor for one minute twice a day. Repetitive stress resulted in an elevated number of circulating parasites accompanies by deep tissue disorganization, and cardiac histopathological alterations. The infected and stressed group displayed a decrease in body weight, and an increased parasite burden in heart tissue, and adrenal glands. Histological analysis of the heart also showed a moderate to severe diffused mononuclear inflammatory process. These results suggest that repetitive stress could be considered an important factor during development of experimental Chagas' disease, enhancing pathogenesis through disturbance of the host's immune system.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to elucidate the impact of physical activity during the growth period as well as on oxidative stress and antioxidative potential in adulthood. The experimental animals used were four-week old male Wistar rats, which were randomly divided into three groups. The exercise loads were as follows: control (CON), treadmill exercise (TE), and jumping exercise (JE). The exercise was performed at the same time of day, at a frequency of five days per week, for eight weeks. Derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROSs) and biological antioxidant potential (BAP) were measured during periods of rest prior to commencement of the experiment and after the experiment.
