Abstract

This study provides data on population and community ecology of Protura in native forests and Pinus radiata plantations in New Zealand. Abundance, age structure, sex ratios, biodiversity, and relationship with soil chemistry are discussed. Protura were significantly more abundant in pine plantations in comparison to native forests. Among native forests, Protura were most abundant under Southern beech (Nothofagus solandri). The abundance patterns may reflect the association between Protura and fungal communities in the soil. No correlation was found between soil organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorous, pH, cation exchange capacity, and the density of Protura. Protura assemblage composition was significantly related to forest type. New Zealand endemic species were associated with native forests; species with distribution outside New Zealand dominated in pine plantations. The distribution records within New Zealand were expanded for five species. The Protura fauna of New Zealand was increased to 18 species. Berberentulus capensis, Eosentomon australicum and Australentulus tillyardi are new records for New Zealand fauna.  相似文献

Saccharomyces is one of the best‐studied microbial genera, but our understanding of the global distributions and evolutionary histories of its members is relatively poor. Recent studies have altered our view of Saccharomyces’ origin, but a lack of sampling from the vast majority of the world precludes a holistic perspective. We evaluate alternate Gondwanan and Far East Asian hypotheses concerning the origin of these yeasts. Being part of Gondwana, and only colonized by humans in the last ~1000 years, New Zealand represents a unique environment for testing these ideas. Genotyping and ribosomal sequencing of samples from North Island native forest parks identified a widespread population of Saccharomyces. Whole genome sequencing identified the presence of S. arboricola and S. eubayanus in New Zealand, which is the first report of S. arboricola outside Far East Asia, and also expands S. eubayanus’ known distribution to include the Oceanic region. Phylogenomic approaches place the S. arboricola population as significantly diverged from the only other sequenced Chinese isolate but indicate that S. eubayanus might be a recent migrant from South America. These data tend to support the Far East Asian origin of the Saccharomyces, but the history of this group is still far from clear.  相似文献

The anti-predator behaviours of a New Zealand freshwater crayfish (Paranephrops zealandicus) to the native long-finned eel (Anguilla dieffenbachii) and the introduced brown trout (Salmo trutta) were investigated. Crayfish modified their behaviour in the presence of both trout and eels. However, a significantly greater number of defensive chela displays and swimming responses were made to eels than trout. Crayfish were able to use chemical cues from skin mucus to detect eels but not trout. Paranephrops zealandicus is able to make some appropriate defensive behavioural responses to the introduced brown trout as well as to its native predator, the long-finned eel. However, crayfish may be at greater risk from the introduced predator because of their apparent inability to detect trout using non-contact chemical cues. This may be a reflection of the different co-evolutionary histories crayfish have had with trout and eels.  相似文献

Synopsis A study of recolonisation of rockpools by intertidal fishes on the Wellington south coast, New Zealand, found the assemblage to be resilient and seasonally stable. A total of 26 species from nine families were recorded, dominated by the Tripterygiidae (triplefins) and Gobiesocidae (clingfishes). A pattern of alternating species dominance occurred, with the triplefinsBellapiscis medius andForsterygion lapillum being numerically dominant in summer, but becoming less common in winter and replaced as dominants by the clingfishesTrachelochismus pinnulatus andGastroscyphus hectoris. Juvenile recruits of eleven species occurred in the samples from spring to early summer, however only the aforementioned four species recruit to the intertidal zone in large numbers. The speed of rockpool recolonisation by fishes after extractive sampling is seasonally dependent, being quicker in the summer than winter. In general, recolonisation takes at least one month, but probably fewer than three. While stochastic factors influence assemblage composition in the short term, overall regulation of the fish assemblage of rockpools appears to be primarily deterministic, resulting in an essentially predictable taxonomic structure.  相似文献

Vegetation on 5 km (c. 100 ha) of the braided bed of the Orongorongo River, Wellington, was sampled in March from 1973 to 1990. The riverbed has become aggraded since an earthquake in 1855. Surface water covered little of the riverbed; Callitriche stagnalis was the only common vascular aquatic plant. Most grasses and dicot herbs were adventive. The scabweed Raoulia tenuicaulis was the commonest dicot. The extent of plant cover was measured on 300 circular plots (radius 1.5 m); it ranged between years from 5% to 22%, depending on the severity of floods. The number of plots with little vegetation varied widely, independently of plant cover. Plots with a sandy substrate had most plant cover. Much wind- blown sand accumulated beneath established vegetation. Patterns of early succession, which relied on available seed, were largely dictated by floods and droughts. If not disturbed for 20-25 years, succession invariably led to a temporary dominance of kanuka (Kunzea ericoides), with or without manuka (Leptospermum scoparium).  相似文献

The development of protocols for the conservation of fungi requires knowledge of the factors controlling their distribution, diversity, and community composition. Here we compare patterns of variation in fungal communities across New Zealand's Nothofagus forests, reportedly the most myco-diverse in New Zealand and hence potentially key to effective conservation of fungi in New Zealand. Diversity of leaf endophytic fungi, as assessed by culturing on agar plates, is assessed for three Nothofagus sp. growing in mixed stands from four sites. Host species was found to have a greater influence on fungal community assemblage than site. The leaf endophyte communities associated with Nothofagus solandri and Nothofagus fusca (both Nothofagus subgenus Fuscopora), were more similar to each other than either were to the community associated with Nothofagus menziesii (Nothofagus subgenus Lophozonia). The broad taxonomic groups isolated, identified on the basis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences, were similar to those found in similar studies from other parts of the world, and from an earlier study on the endophyte diversity in four podocarp species from New Zealand, but there were few matches at species level. Average levels of endophyte species diversity associated with single Nothofagus species and single podocarp species were similar, despite historical literature and collection data recording more than twice as many fungal species on average from the Nothofagus species. The significance of these findings to fungal conservation is discussed.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that indigenous beetle diversity reflects indigenous plant diversity in modified and remnant habitats. This study examines the indigenous: introduced relationship at a locality where degraded pasture has been progressively revegetated. Pitfall traps were used to collect beetles from three revegetated sites of different ages (5, 17 and 100 years) and in a coastal Muehlenbeckia habitat on Matiu- Somes Island (25 ha), Wellington Harbour, New Zealand. A total of 78 morphospecies were found over 12 months. The indigenous: introduced status of 74 species were determined; 67 were classified as 'indigenous', and 7 as 'introduced'. A positive trend was found between the proportion of ground-dwelling indigenous beetle species collected and the proportion of indigenous plant species present at a study site. As the revegetated site matured, the proportion of indigenous beetle species increased. We collected 20 (83%), 37 (88%) and 48 (92%) indigenous beetle species from the 5-year scrubland, 17-year shrubland and 100-year forest, respectively.  相似文献

In the Holarctic, predation by mustelids on birds is often linked to population cycles of rodents (especially voles and lemmings) because birds may be buffered against mustelid predation at high rodent densities. By contrast, interguild relationships between introduced mustelids and rodents can have very different consequences for native birds in ecosystems where mustelids have been introduced. Here, we consider the interactions between Stoats Mustela erminea , feral House Mice Mus musculus and native birds in New Zealand beech Nothofagus spp. forests. We conclude that buffering to protect birds from Stoat predation normally fails in these systems, because peak populations of mice in these forests are low by Holarctic standards, and mice usually do not become sufficiently abundant to distract increased numbers of Stoats from preying on birds. However, temporary buffering is possible during rare episodes of extreme mouse abundance.  相似文献

In many German forest soils low base saturation of CEC in deeper soil layers was reported and acidic deposition is seen as the major cause of these findings. To test this hypothesis we sampled 5 New Zealand forest soils from pristine beech (Nothofagus fusca, N. menziesii, N. solandri) sites under climatic and geological conditions comparable to higher elevations in Germany. The soils developed from granite and greywacke. Soil samples were analyzed for pH and the exchangeable cations were extracted with 1M NH4Cl. The base saturation of all soil profiles was very low, even in deeper layers and was thus similar to the patterns found in many German forest soils. The pH was generally higher in the New Zealand soils as compared to Germany. The reason for the depletion of base cations in deeper soil layers of New Zealand forest soils is most likely the leaching of base cations with HCO3 - resulting from the dissociation of carbonic acid in connection with high amounts of seepage. Thus, under high rainfall conditions, the low base saturation found in deeper layers of forest soils cannot exclusively be attributed to the effects of acidic depositions and land use. ei]Section editor: R F Huettl  相似文献

Constrained canonical correspondence analysis was used to compare the elevational distribution of conifer-broadleaved hardwood forests at nine localities on South Island, New Zealand. Elevations of individual species were compared using cover-weighted mean elevations and cover-weighted standard deviations of mean elevation. Mean elevations of floristically similar stands declined with latitude, but was also lower at a locality with a granite substrate than at an adjacent locality with a schist substrate. The mean elevation breadth of frequent species (those in >5% of stands) was greatest at a locality underlain by schist and least at a locality underlain by granite. This is consistent with wide habitat breadth for species in early successional stages, because forest underlain by schist is more frequently disturbed than forest underlain by granite. Elevation breadth of frequent species was less, and species' turnover greater, in South Island conifer-broadleaved hardwood forests than in conifer forests at similar latitudes in the Southern Rocky Mountains, USA.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of lizards relative to habitat structure were studied at Pukerua Bay, Wellington between December 1982 and March 1988 in order to identify options for management of the habitat of the five species of lizards present. One species, Whitaker's skink (Cyclodina whitakeri), is a threatened species with only one known mainland population. Pitfall traps were set for 23 667 trap-days and yielded 2897 lizard captures. Highest capture rate was for common skinks (Oligosoma nigriplantare polychroma) and lowest rate was for C. whitakeri. Of the five lizard species at Pukerua Bay, C. whitakeri had the narrowest habitat range and was most sensitive to temperature extremes. These features, combined with predation, and habitat disturbance and degradation, have resulted in critically low numbers of C. whitakeri. Assessment of management options to lessen the threats to C. whitakeri concluded that risks from disturbance, predation and fire could best be minimised through a managed revegetation programme.  相似文献

Large trees are a significant structural component of old-growth forests and are important as habitat for epiphytic biodiversity; as substantial stores of biomass, carbon and nutrient; as seed trees; and as engineers of large gap sites for regeneration. Their low density across the landscape is an impediment to accurately measuring growth and mortality, especially as infrequent tree deaths are rarely captured without long periods of monitoring. Here we present large-tree (≥ 30 cm in diameter at breast height) growth and mortality rates for six common New Zealand tree species over a 42-year period from 28 large permanent plots (0.4?0.8?ha) in the central North Island. Our goal was to examine how rates of growth and mortality varied with tree size and species. In total we sampled 1933 large trees across 11.6 ha, corresponding to a large-tree density of 167 trees?ha?1, of which we used 1542 as our six study species. Mean annual mortality rates varied more than 10-fold among species being least in Dacrydium cupressinum (0.16%) and greatest in Weinmannia racemosa (2.21%). Diameter growth rates were less variable among species and ranged from 1.8 mm?yr?1 in Ixerba brexioides to 3.3?mm?yr?1 in D.?cupressinum. Tree size influenced the rate of mortality in Beilschmiedia tawa, I. brexioides and W.?racemosa but there was no support for including tree size in models of the remaining three species. Likewise, tree size influenced growth rates in I.?brexioides and Nothofagus menziesii but not the remaining four species. These data provide robust size- and species-specific estimates of large-tree demographic rates that can be used as baselines for monitoring the impacts of management and global change in old-growth forests.  相似文献

Correlations between environment and tree alpha-diversity in New Zealand's primary forests were examined using an extensive quantitative dataset (14 540 plots). Generalised additive models were used to examine relationships between species richness and temperature, solar radiation, root-zone moisture deficit, relative humidity, lithology, drainage, and plot size for all trees (112 species), and separately for broadleaved trees (88 species), conifers (17), and the genus Nothofagus (4). Diversity both for all tree species and for broadleaved trees was predicted to be highest on sites with high temperatures, high solar radiation, and high soil and atmospheric moisture, and on sedimentary and basaltic substrates. Highest conifer diversity was predicted on sites with intermediate temperatures, low solar radiation, high root-zone and atmospheric moisture, and rhyolitic and Quaternary substrates, particularly where drainage was impeded. Highest Nothofagus diversity was predicted for sites combining low temperatures, high solar radiation, high root-zone moisture but low atmospheric moisture, and on granitic substrates. Differences in diversity between the species groups on different lithologies are interpreted as rejecting both the effects of variation in large-scale disturbance histories, and the effects of confounding environmental factors associated with particular substrates. There were also significant interactions between species groups: both broadleaved tree and conifer richness were predicted to be lower on sites where one or more Nothofagus spp. — all of which have marked patchiness in their distribution — are present. Although these results are consistent with the hypothesis that tree diversity is highest on sites conducive to high productivity, history is also indicated as an important determinant of tree diversity in New Zealand.  相似文献

Abstract. Patterns of mortality, recruitment, and forest turnover were investigated using permanent plot data from temperate forests in 14 localities throughout New Zealand. Tree mortality and recruitment rates were calculated from tagged trees ≥ 10 cm diameter at 1.4 m on individual 400 m2 plots, and turnover rates were calculated as the mean of mortality and recruitment rates. Turnover rates (1.4% per year) were very similar to those recorded for tropical forests (i.e. 1.5% per year). As was shown in tropical forests, we also found significant relationships between forest turnover and species richness. In New Zealand forests there was also a decrease in species richness and turnover rates with increasing latitude. Although species richness is well known to decline with latitude, our study provides support for a possible link between seasonality and disturbance with tree turnover and species diversity. While tree mortality and recruitment rates were approximately in balance at some localities, in others there were imbalances between mortality and recruitment rates.  相似文献

Even though many aspects of Dictyocha fibula and D. speculum have long been studied, very little is known about D. octonaria. For the first time a clonal culture derived from a single cell of D. octonaria from Wellington Harbour was studied in detail. In the skeleton‐bearing stage three morphotypes were observed – skeleton bearing, mucocyst‐bearing and amoeboid, while in the naked stage only the naked form was studied. In this study the mucocyst‐bearing form was described as a new morphotype. Vegetative reproduction of the skeleton‐bearing form in the exponential growth phase was by both direct binary fission and by first forming a doublet and then two separate daughter cells, while that of naked form was by simple binary fission. Occasionally double skeletons were observed as end products of both the vegetative and sexual reproductions. In sexual reproduction all three forms in the skeleton‐bearing stage exhibited the same polymorphic life history involving a multinucleate stage. The newly formed daughter cells of all three forms developed individual siliceous skeletons prior to being released from the parent cell. The naked form in the naked stage, however, exhibited a separate polymorphic life history that produced only skeleton‐free daughter cells. For the first time both vegetative and sexual reproduction of D. octonaria were documented.  相似文献

Growth and pigment composition of both the skeleton‐bearing and naked forms and toxicology of the naked form of Dictyocha octonaria were studied here using clonal cultures derived from a single cell from Wellington Harbour. In this study both the naked and skeleton‐bearing forms showed optimum growth between 14 and 18°C. Maximum growth rates of the naked and skeleton‐bearing forms were 1.46 and 0.99 division day?1, respectively. Growth rates of the naked form at temperatures <18°C were found to be greater than those of the skeleton‐bearing form. The reverse was true at temperatures >22°C. Cells of the naked form died at 24°C while those of the skeleton‐bearing form at 26°C. In this study the naked and skeleton‐bearing forms cultured in identical growth conditions contained almost the same pigments, except zeaxanthin, which made up about 3.2% of the total carotenoid in the skeleton‐bearing form and virtually none in the naked form. Toxicological tests conducted on rotifers indicated that the naked form was not harmful to the test organisms.  相似文献
