Thirty-five lakes in the South Island of New Zealand were surveyed for rotifers during 1988–1991. Of 85 taxa identified, 31 are first records for New Zealand, bringing the rotifers recorded from the country to 331. Four species (Keratella australis, K. slacki, Lecane herzigi and L. tasmaniensis), previously recorded as endemic forms only in Australia, are now added to the New Zealand checklist. Several of the new records are photographed, and scanning electron micrographs of the trophi are shown. Comments are made on the Australasian endemics and rotifer biogeography in New Zealand.  相似文献

The rapid decline in bumblebee populations within Europe has been linked to habitat loss through agricultural intensification, and a consequential reduction in the availability of preferred forage plants. The successful introduction of four European Bombus species to the South Island of New Zealand from England (in 1885 and 1906) provides an opportunity to determine how important different forage plants (also introduced from the U.K.) are to two severely threatened European bumblebee species (Bombus ruderatus and B. subterraneus). In January 2003 we conducted a survey of bumblebee populations across 70 sites in the central and southern South Island, recording which plant species were being used as pollen and nectar sources for each Bombus species. All four bumblebee species showed a clear preference for plants of European origin. Only B. terrestris, the most polylectic species, was recorded feeding on native plant species. The longer-tongued bumblebees, B. hortorum, B. ruderatus, and B. subterraneus, foraged predominantly on just two plant species; Trifolium pratense for both nectar and pollen, and Echium vulgare for nectar. These plant species are now declining in abundance in the U.K. Our results provide support for the hypothesis that the loss of flower-rich meadows, particularly those containing populations of Fabaceae species with long corollae, is responsible for the decline of bumblebee species across Europe. Comparison with earlier bumblebee surveys suggests that long-tongued bumblebees may also be in decline in New Zealand, particularly B. subterraneus which is now very localised and scarce.  相似文献

Species composition patterns and vegetation?environment relationships were quantified for montane volcanic outcrops on Banks Peninsula. The flora of these habitat islands comprises 346 vascular plant species including 82 exotic species and 52 species that are nationally rare, regionally rare, or regional endemics. Both MDS ordination analysis and TWINSPAN results illustrated the high compositional and environmental heterogeneity across the outcrops. Multi-dimensional scaling revealed that primary environmental factors related to community composition comprise both regional-scale gradients of altitude and outcrop-scale gradients of slope steepness, soil pH, area available to plants, maximum vegetation height, and the percentage of the surrounding vegetation that is forest. Accordingly, TWINSPAN separated four outcrop communities that occur on steeper slopes, have less fertile soils and tend not to face north from three outcrop communities that have shallower slopes, more fertile soils and tend to face north. Types in the first group are more likely to be bordered by forest or taller shrublands, whereas those in the second group occur on outcrops primarily bordered by grasslands and support more exotic species. Within these broader groups, communities differ in their altitude and the size, soil depth and shading of the outcrops on which they occur. We describe the vegetation of the seven communities; this ranges from predominance of stunted trees and taller statured species such as Podocarpus hallii and Phormium cookianum to vegetation of shrubby species such as Heliohebe lavaudiana and Hebe strictissima, to short vegetation of native woodland and grassland species such as Polystichum vestitum and Rytidosperma corinum, to exotic pasture of clovers and exotic grasses. The percentage of species on an outcrop face that are exotic is well modelled by site factors, with exotics increasing as the surrounding matrix becomes more disturbed, slopes become more gentle, the percentage of shade on the outcrop decreases, and soil fertility increases. In contrast, nearby disturbance has little influence on the percentage or number of species that are rare on an outcrop face; rather rare species richness is more strongly related to outcrop area and lack of shade, echoing patterns observed for rare outcrop species elsewhere in the world. These results highlight the importance of considering the high compositional heterogeneity among outcrops and the influence of disturbance to surrounding ecosystems in guiding conservation planning.  相似文献

The success of studies of change in South Island tussock grasslands can be assessed indirectly by the form in which their results are presented-scientific paper, institutional bulletin, popular publication, conference proceedings, unpublished report, or not at all. Studies often fall short of their potential to increase understanding of the effects of natural processes or management: the results of many simply never reach either the authority that commissioned them or the public in general. The application of some general principles to the definition of objectives and choice of methods could considerably enhance the success of such studies.  相似文献

Constrained canonical correspondence analysis was used to compare the elevational distribution of conifer-broadleaved hardwood forests at nine localities on South Island, New Zealand. Elevations of individual species were compared using cover-weighted mean elevations and cover-weighted standard deviations of mean elevation. Mean elevations of floristically similar stands declined with latitude, but was also lower at a locality with a granite substrate than at an adjacent locality with a schist substrate. The mean elevation breadth of frequent species (those in >5% of stands) was greatest at a locality underlain by schist and least at a locality underlain by granite. This is consistent with wide habitat breadth for species in early successional stages, because forest underlain by schist is more frequently disturbed than forest underlain by granite. Elevation breadth of frequent species was less, and species' turnover greater, in South Island conifer-broadleaved hardwood forests than in conifer forests at similar latitudes in the Southern Rocky Mountains, USA.  相似文献

The composition and succession of the subfossil chironomid fauna has been studied in a sediment core from Lake Taylor. The sediments of the core are all within the Nothofagus phase of the last 3000 years within the Aranuian. In the older sediments of the core the chironomid fauna was dominated by Tanytarsini and Orthocladiinae whereas Chironomini dominated in the more recent sediments. The species diversity is very high compared with the results of other studies of the recent chironomid fauna of lakes in the South Island. The most abundant head capsules belong to the taxa Chironomus zealandicus, Tanytarsus vespertinus, Corynocera sp., and Eukiefferiella sp. Several additional taxa which have not yet been described also occurred in large numbers. It is not possible to correlate any definite changes in the composition of the subfossil chironomid fauna with a change in climatic conditions or the trophic status of the lake.  相似文献

Variation in developmental rate from fertilization to swim-up, and body size at swim-up, may affect the growth and survival of young-of-the-year fish. Fish egg size (diameter) is often positively correlated to adult female size, but whether increased egg size equates to higher egg nutrient content and subsequently improved embryo/larval performance, remains unclear. Artificially fertilized northern pike eggs from individual females (total length 400–800 mm) were cultured under temperature controlled laboratory conditions to test the hypothesis that female body size positively influences egg size and the amount of specific nutrients (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and fatty acids) allocated to eggs. We further hypothesized that greater egg nutrient content would positively influence egg survival, developmental rate, and the size of swim-up fry. These hypotheses were investigated in the context of two different northern pike spawning strategies (early season tributary vs. late season deep shoal spawning). Nutrients were allocated conservatively in northern pike eggs, showing very little variation in nutrient concentrations, but the total mass of all egg nutrients increased linearly with egg dry mass. Neither egg dry mass nor nutrient content (concentration or mass), were related to either egg diameter or female body size. The mass of individual egg nutrients was, however, strongly correlated with egg dry mass (r 2 range 0.62 to 0.99 for individual nutrients) and positively related to the total length of swim-up fry (r 2 = 0.58). The eggs of late spawning pike had significantly greater dry mass (average = 3.02 mg/egg) and developed more rapidly to swim-up (average = 17.89 days) than did those of early spawners (average = 2.28 mg/egg, 19.05 days). Our results indicate that egg quality may be best assessed by egg dry mass, which was correlated with greater nutrient mass and increased swim-up fry body length, as opposed to egg diameter or female body size which showed no correlation to egg nutrient composition and egg/larval performance. Summary Honeydew is a sugary secretion of beech scale insects (Ultracoelostoma spp.). Two introduced species of wasps forage on the sugar droplets in New Zealand beech forests. We hypothesize that competition between them may explain whyVespula germanica has become locally extinct in beech (Nothofagus) forest invaded byV. vulgaris. Changes in behaviour of the two wasp species in response to changes in the honeydew resource were monitored. Foraging and rainfall separately and together reduced the honeydew standing crop. In response to the standing crop decreasing, more wasps were found on honeydew trees, they became less active, spent more time lapping the tree surface, and ingested drops of honeydew at a slower rate.V. vulgaris was more active, and obtained drops and energy at a higher rate thanV. germanica. These behavioural differences may lead to competitive advantages affecting queen size and possibly survival.  相似文献

We studied vegetation change on 142 permanently marked transects spread throughout tussock grasslands of Otago and Canterbury, in areas subject to both pastoral and conservation management. The transects were established between 1982 and 1986 and remeasured between 1993 and 1999, providing a record of vegetation change at each site over an interval varying from 10 to 15 years. Each transect consisted of 50 quadrats, each 0.25m(2), in which the presence of all vascular plant species had been recorded. For each transect, we calculated the change between measurements in the mean number of species recorded per quadrat, and the change in the total number of species recorded per transect. Averaged across all transects, there was a significant decline in species richness between measurements at both the quadrat and transect scales. Small herbs (those less than or equal to2 cm tall, excluding Hieracium species) showed the greatest decline. On average, more than one quarter of the small herb species present in a quadrat at the first measurement had disappeared within 10 years. Larger herbs, ferns, rushes, sedges and grasses (excluding Chionochloa species) also declined significantly in species richness, reflecting declines in the abundance of species in these groups. Woody species richness remained constant, while species in the genera Chionochloa and Hieracium increased significantly in mean quadrat species richness, reflecting increases in the abundance of these species along transects. The rate of decline in mean quadrat species richness was unrelated to changes in the abundance of either Chionochloa or Hieracium species, or to an overall increase in total vegetation cover on transects. The rate of decline in species richness was also unrelated to the level of grazing or burning between measurements. However, the rate of decline in species richness was greater at lower elevation, on schist rock and on yellow-brown and yellow-grey soils. Our results suggest that a major compositional change is occurring in these grasslands at a rate that is independent of local variation in management and independent of the widespread invasion of these grasslands by Hieracium species.  相似文献

Abstract Vegetation and environmental patterns, and associated ecological processes, were quantified from 42 sites on several transects in each of two extensive (5 and 220 ha) low-alpine patterned mires in the same region of south-central New Zealand. Plant communities, as derived from multivariate analyses, were correlated with 15 physical and chemical environmental factors. Various measures of water availability and chemistry were consistently the most significant factors in relation to vegetation patterns in both mires. In the smaller mire, plant cover adjacent to pools, which were partly or completely drained through underground tunnels, dominated the overall correlations. The nutrient status of surface water had a consistent negative relationship with water availability. No consistent spatial or temporal patterns were found in the concentrations of Ca, Mg, K or Na, nor pH or conductivity in pool water. Evaporative enrichment of cations on the surface of both mires was noted, with levels consistently higher in surface than in adjacent pool water. The somewhat higher nutrient status in the smaller mire may be a result of the size and/or the amounts of run-off from the surrounding slopes onto the mire surface or through the underground pipe system. Hydrogen (D) and oxygen (18O) isotopic compositions in water from pools, the mire surface and below ground from the smaller mire, suggested that there was negligible mixing of evaporation-enriched surface water with groundwater. Differences in overall nutrient levels in the two mires were relatively small and indicative of mesotrophic or marginally ombrotrophic status for these mires. Although of international significance, the wetland complex currently has inadequate formal protection. Possible options are assessed.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The benthos of a heterogeneous series of lakes was sampled in late winter-spring (before insect emergence) to determine species composition, community structure and standing crops. Nearly 50 species were found, with an average of only 12.4 per lake. Fifteen species occurred widely, with the same few species (Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, Potamopyrgus antipodarum and sometimes Chironomus and Macropelopia spp.) often dominant. All taxonomic groups were of limited diversity; for instance, the maximum number of chironomids per lake was 8, with an average of 4.7 species. There were no chaoborids or mayflies, and very few isopods, amphipods, ceralopogonids and water mites. Niches of common species were broad.
Species composition and dominance were not related to lake trophic status; hence there were no indicator organisms. Standing crops varied only broadly with lake trophic status, probably because of the differential influence of extraneous factors such as relative depth and input of allochthonous organic matter and silt. Depth: biomass profiles were also variable and only partly correlated with trophic status. Instead, many lakes were grouped on the basis of geographical area and the influence of extraneous factors; species were grouped according to the relative extent of their distribution.  相似文献

To determine the susceptibility of different forest types to lianes, and to investigate which ecological factors are limiting for lianes, a field survey covering 28 naturally forested sites in Golden Bay (Northwest Nelson) and on Banks Peninsula (Canterbury) was carried out. Results from Detrended Canonical Correspondence Analysis of liane species abundance data in relation to tree and shrub species abundance data and abiotic site variables, showed that the liane community composition was highly correlated with the composition of the tree and shrub community. Forest remnants with introduced lianes in the canopy were characterised by high soil pH, low altitude and high mean temperatures. Native lianes were more widespread geographically and showed a wider ecological tolerance range than introduced lianes. Native liane species were found in both early successional and mature forest, whereas introduced lianes occurred more often with early- successional vegetation. Forest canopy height was also an important factor affecting liane distribution and abundance. Both climbing mechanism and liane stem longevity seemed to affect the height of canopy accessible to lianes. The three twining lianes with longer-lived woody stems (Muehlenbeckia australis, Parsonsia spp. and Ripogonum scandens) reached higher host canopies than a twiner with herbaceous stems (Calystegia tuguriorum), a tendril climber (Passiflora mollisima), and a hook climber (Rubus cissoides). The susceptibility of individual tree and shrub species to canopy invasion by lianes was affected both by the light environment of the potential host, and the architectural properties (height and support availability) of the host.  相似文献

Acid, brown water streams are common on the west coast of the South Island, New Zealand. Acid precipitation is not a significant problem in this region where stream water acidity is brought about by high concentrations of humic substances. The interrelationships between pH, alkalinity, conductivity, DOC and total reactive aluminium were investigated at 45 running water sites. pH (range 3.5–8.1) was strongly correlated with alkalinity (range 0–49 g·m−3 CaCO3) and less strongly with conductivity (range 2.0–9.7 mS·m−1). A strong positive correlation was found between DOC and total reactive aluminium concentration both of which were correlated negatively with pH. In all brown water streams, most aluminium was probably in the non-toxic, organically complexed form. Benthic invertebrate assemblages were examined at 34 sites. Taxonomic richness was not correlated with pH and similar numbers of ephemeropteran, plecopteran and trichopteran taxa were taken from acidobiontic (pH ⩽ 5.5), acidophilic (pH 5.6–6.9) and moderately alkaline (pH ⩾ 7.0) groups of streams. Many species occurred over a wide pH range and had a lower limit of about pH 4.5. The mayfly, Deleatidium occurred at 33 sites and was amongst the five most abundant taxa at 32 of them. The stoneflies, Zelandobius confusus, Austroperla cyrene and Stenoperla maclellani, an elmid, Hydora sp. and a caddisfly, Psilochorema sp. also occurred in over half the streams and frequently were abundant. Few habitat specialists were found. Benthic assemblages were not associated strongly with measured physicochemical factors but streams in close proximity tended to have similar faunas. This suggests that the availability of suitable colonizers sets the limits to species richness and is important in determining the composition of benthic assemblages at a particular locality.  相似文献

Aim The research aim is to reconstruct last glacial maximum (LGM) and Holocene vegetation history and ecology from fossil beetle assemblages. Location The LGM and Holocene sites are located in the Awatere Valley, which lies in the tectonically active Marlborough Region in the north east of the South Island of New Zealand. Methods Beetle fossils were extracted from silty organic sediment using the standard kerosene flotation method. Fossils were identified by comparisons made to modern species based on morphology and surface features. The ecology and distribution of modern analogues are extrapolated to reconstruct the fossil environment. Results One hundred and forty‐five beetle species belonging to 33 families were identified. The LGM fossil fauna showed the local vegetation was characterized by a forest patch surrounded by an open tussock/grassland landscape. This Nothofagus (southern beech) forest persisted at the site until mid‐Holocene when it was replaced by a podocarp forest that contained high beetle diversity. Herbivores dominate in the early stage of this zone, indicating a relatively new forest environment. Later in the Holocene, the fauna is dominated by detritivores indicating an older more established forest. The late Holocene is characterized by low diversity and the absence of forest species. This fauna indicates that by 500 years ago, the forest was absent and is associated with an almost compete loss of beetle biodiversity. Main conclusions The fossil beetles provide a unique perspective into the past environment in the Awatere Valley on a local scale. The reconstruction supports regional pollen interpretations of Holocene vegetation by identifying a specific forest patch. Fossil beetles are thus a valuable local proxy for vegetation reconstructions.  相似文献

A quantitative study of the phytoplankton and nutrients in Goat Island Bay, northern New Zealand, was carried out at two stations of depths 7 m and 20 m in 1966-69. There were significant differences in the concentrations of the phytoplankton at the two stations, the deeper station having, in general, higher concentrations than the shallower. Low phytoplankton standing crops were found in winter when the increased run-off from the land resulted in lower salinities, higher turbidity, and higher dissolved silicate levels. The spring growth of diatoms was dominated by small diatoms (Cylindrotheca closterium, Leptocylindrus danicus, Nitzschia pseudoseriata, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and Rhizosolenia delicatula). Occasionally it was dominated by a population of large centric diatoms (Chaetoceros spp., Coscinodiscus spp., Thalassiosira spp.), but these appeared to be found in a separate water mass which entered the bay and displaced the resident water mass. A third water mass entered the bay in spring and was characterised by the coccolithophore Emiliana huxleyi and a lower temperature. During the summer diatoms dominated the phytoplankton population, but were replaced by dinoflagellates for a short period in autumn.  相似文献

While there have been significant conservation successes through restoration of island biodiversity following the eradication of invasive predators, a major challenge remains to reintroduce native species within larger mainland systems that support suites of introduced mammalian predators. Strategies to enhance establishment and persistence of reintroduced populations include pre‐release management to reduce post‐release dispersal, and habitat restoration such as predator control at release sites. Evaluation of such strategies critically requires strategic and intensive post‐release monitoring to identify drivers of success or the specific causes of failures. The buff weka (Gallirallus australis hectori), a flightless rail, was reintroduced to an unfenced mainland island on New Zealand's South. Past reintroductions on the mainland have all failed, but lack of post‐release monitoring has meant the exact cause and timing of failures is unknown. We investigate the ability of buff weka to establish a mainland population in conjunction with high intensity predator control. Nineteen buff weka (15 males, 4 females) were transferred from predator‐free islands in Lake Wakatipu, South Island, to Motatapu Station and held in a pre‐release enclosure for 6 weeks. Using a combination of very high frequency (VHF) and Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry, released birds were monitored every 2 days for 4 months post‐release. Following release, no buff weka dispersed off Motatapu Station. Survival, however, was low and by the end of the study, 12 (63%) buff weka had been predated by introduced mustelids, ferrets (Mustela furo) and stoats (Mustela erminea). The lack of dispersal by buff weka suggests the presence of favourable resources on Motatapu Station. However, the low survival rate indicates that the predator‐trapping network was insufficient to suppress predator numbers to a level low enough for buff weka population persistence.  相似文献

A lizard assemblage at Macraes Flat, New Zealand, comprising the common skinks Oligosoma maccanni and Oligosoma nigriplantare polychroma, the endangered species Oligosoma grande and Oligosoma otagense, and the common gecko Hoplodactylus maculatus, was studied to determine the prevalence of ectoparasites and hemoparasites. The mites Odontacarus lygosomae and Ophionyssus scincorum infected all Oligosoma spp. only, and the mite Neotrombicula naultini infected only H. maculatus. The hemoparasite Hepatozoon lygosomarum infected all Oligosoma skinks, except O. n. polychroma. Oligosoma otagense had the highest infection levels of all parasites by several orders of magnitude. For all lizard species, there was no difference in mite prevalence between adult males and adult females, but juveniles were less often infected. For all skink species, there was a significant relationship between presence of the hemoparasite He. lygosomarum and infection intensity of the supposed vector, O. scincorum. It is unclear if patterns of parasite infection reflect species-specific susceptibility, host-parasite species-specific spatial ecology, or environmentally induced host physiological impairment. Considering the threatened nature of O. otagense, evidence of high parasitemia should stimulate further investigation.  相似文献

Aim To report analyses and propose hypotheses of adaptive radiation that explain distributional patterns of the alpine genus Pachycladon Hook.f. – a morphologically diverse genus from New Zealand closely related to Arabidopsis thaliana. Location South Island, New Zealand. Methods Morphological and nrDNA ITS sequence phylogenies were generated for Pachycladon. An analysis is presented of species distributional patterns and attributes. Results Phylogenetic analyses of morphological characters and nrDNA ITS sequence data were found to be congruent in supporting three New Zealand clades for Pachycladon. Monophyletic groups identified within the genus are geographically distinct and are associated with different geological parent materials. Distribution maps, latitude and altitude range, and data on geological parent material are presented for the nine named and one unnamed species of Pachycladon from New Zealand. Main conclusions (a) Panbiogeographic hypotheses accounting for the origin and present‐day distribution of Pachycladon in New Zealand are not supported.
(b) Species diversity and distributions of Pachycladon are explained by a Late Tertiary–Quaternary adaptive radiation associated with increasing specialization to geological substrates. Pachycladon cheesemanii Heenan & A.D.Mitch. is morphologically similar to the closest overseas relatives. It is a geological generalist and has wide latitudinal and altitudinal ranges, and we suggest it resembles the ancestral form of the genus in New Zealand. Pachycladon novae‐zelandiae (Hook.f.) Hook.f. and P. wallii (Carse) Heenan & A.D.Mitch. are a southern South Island group that predominantly occurs on Haast Schist, are polycarpic, have lobed leaves, and lateral inflorescences. Pachycladon enysii (Cheeseman) Heenan & A.D.Mitch., P. fastigiata (Hook.f.) Heenan & A.D.Mitch., and P. stellata (Allan) Heenan & A.D.Mitch. are restricted to greywacke in the eastern South Island, and are facultatively monocarpic, have serrate leaves, and stout terminal inflorescenes.
(c) Present distributions of Pachycladon species may relate to Pleistocene climate change. Pachycladon enysii reaches the highest altitude of New Zealand species of Pachycladon and is most common in the Southern Alps in Canterbury. We propose that this species survived on nunataks at the height of the last glaciation. In contrast, P. fastigiata grows at a lower altitude and is absent from the high mountains of the Southern Alps. We suggest it was extirpated from this area during the last glaciation.  相似文献

Stomach content data from 7283 spiny dogfish, Squalus ucunthius Linnaeus, from east coast South Island of New Zealand are presented. The major dietary components based on occurrence were 60% crustaceans and 15% fish. The principal food items were the post-larval phase of the squat lobster, Munida greguria Fabricius (30%), and the euphausiid, Nyctiphanes australis Sars (20%). Commercial fish species contributed to less than 5% of the diet. Diet of dogfish varied with dogfish size and sex. Compared to northern hemisphere studies, spiny dogfish in this study area had (1) a high proportion of crustaceans in their diet, (2) a relatively low percentage of empty stomachs, (3) a relatively high incidence of cannibalism.  相似文献

This radio-tracking study reports the spring home range, spatial organisation and activity of 11 stoats Mustela erminea in a New Zealand Nothofagus forest, 1,5 yr after significant seedfall when rodent density was low, but stoat density was high. The average home range of 4 male stoats was 223 (SE = 45) ha, significantly larger than the average range area of 94 (SE = 13) ha recorded for 7 female stoats. Stoats were generally tolerant of sharing space and did not maintain intra- or intersexual territorial spacing systems. There was no evidence of temporal avoidance with several stoats of the same sex showing slight attraction to one another. However, stoats still may avoid one another when in close proximity. Long-term radio-tracking studies are required to determine the general patterns of spacing behaviour in stoats, Male stoats showed higher levels of activity during daylight than females.  相似文献
