The use of population models for predicting desirable and undesirable outcomes of biological control are described using three case studies from New Zealand. The first reviews the models of Barlow and colleagues used to understand and improve the control of native grass grub Costelytra zealandica populations by augmentative application of pathogenic Serratia entomophila bacteria. A variety of modelling approaches have been used to predict grass grub outbreaks and thus the cost-effectiveness of applying bacteria. Models have also been developed to understand the competitive interactions between pathogenic and non-pathogenic forms of the bacteria. The other two case studies show how retrospective modelling has been used to quantify the non-target impact of introduced biological control agents. The parasitoid Microctonus aethiopoides was introduced to control the lucerne pest Sitona discoideus, but was found to disperse outside of the target habitat and attack several native weevil species in the Entiminae family. Retrospective modelling suggests that, given average parasitism levels of 15%, native Irenimus spp. and Nicaeana spp. weevil populations are likely to have been reduced by 8% due to non-target parasitism. Similarly, population models have shown that native red admiral butterfly (Bassaris gonerilla) populations are likely to have been reduced by 5% due to non- target parasitism by Pteromalus puparum, which was introduced to New Zealand for the control of the cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae).  相似文献

The New Zealand red admiral butterfly, Bassaris gonerilla (F.) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), has been known as a non-target host for the introduced biological control agent Pteromalus puparum (L.) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) for at least 35 years, but the level of parasitism has never been quantified. Pre-imaginal mortality in B. gonerilla was assessed over the southern summer of 2000/01 at six field sites in the Christchurch area of the South Island, New Zealand. Individual eggs and larvae were identified by tagging the stem of the Urtica ferox Forst.f. plant on which they were found and the fate of these individuals was checked weekly. These data were used to construct a partial life table for B. gonerilla. Egg mortality was very high (95%), with parasitism by an unidentified Telenomus sp. Haliday (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) causing 57% mortality. Mortality in the larval and pupal stages increased at a constant rate with age and the major mortality factor was disappearance, which was assumed to be a result of predation and dispersal of larvae. The introduced biological control agent P. puparum parasitized 14% of B. gonerilla pupae sampled. However, parasitism by another exotic parasitoid, the self-introduced Echthromorpha intricatoria (F.) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), was even higher at 26%. A survey of pupal parasitism in three regions of New Zealand (Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin) revealed overall parasitism levels of 67% by E. intricatoria and 8% by P. puparum, but due to the difference in emergence times of B. gonerilla and its parasitoids, these are likely to be overestimates of percent parasitism. It is concluded that P. puparum has permanently enhanced mortality in B. gonerilla, but the level of mortality is low relative to egg parasitism by Telenomus sp., larval disappearance mortality, and pupal mortality due to E. intricatoria parasitism. To determine if this level of pupal parasitism has had population effects will require more data and the development of a population model for B. gonerilla.  相似文献

Pupal parasitism of the gypsy moth,Lymantria dispar (L.), was monitored in 15 study plots in New Jersey from 1978 to 1988. The predominant parasitoid was a chalcidid wasp,Brachymeria intermedia (Nees), which was found in only six plots. Parasitism was generally observed in the year of or preceding the peak numbers of gypsy moth egg masses. Parasitism exceeded 4% in only one plot. Percentage parasitism was correlated significantly with numbers of egg masses per hectare in the current season and with numbers of pupae per plot in the previous season, suggesting delayed density dependence. A multiple regression analysis found percentage parasitism to be correlated significantly with percentage infection by nuclear polyhedrosis virus, density of male host pupae, and mean minimum temperature in August and March. A canonical discriminant analysis carried out to distinguish study plots with and without the parasitoid was significant. Plots withB. intermedia had relatively higher host populations and defoliation.  相似文献

Indoor releases of Spalangia cameroni Perkins and Muscidifurax raptor Girauelt & Sanders (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) were conducted in five organic dairy cattle farms to evaluate the overall effect on parasitism and efficiency at different pupal depths of Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae). Overall, parasitism increased significantly from 5.3 to 28.8–28.7% of the exposed house fly pupae due to the release of pupal parasitoids. Spalangia cameroni was by far the most dominant species, contributing approximately 71.5–72.3% of the parasitism in the release and post-release period, whereas 20.9–24.4% could be attributed to Muscidifurax raptor. A naturally occurring ichneumonid, Phygadeuon fumator Gravenhorst (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) parasitized 4.1–6.8% of the exposed fly pupae. The placement of house fly pupae at two depths of the bedding, 5–10 and 15–20 cm had no significant effect on overall parasitism whereas M. raptor attacked the house fly pupae significantly more when placed in the 5–10 cm stratum (10.0%) compared to the 15–20 cm stratum (3.2%). The two pupal depths had no significant effect on parasitism by S. cameroni and P. fumator. Albeit S. cameroni contributed significantly to overall parasitism, M. raptor had a significantly higher attack rate when first a female had located bags with sentinel pupae. Based on the above results, however, S. cameroni seems the most appropriate species for managing house flies in straw bedded dairy cattle farms in Denmark. A biological control strategy of simultaneous releases of S. cameroni and M. raptor is discussed.  相似文献

The life-history patterns of four Hydropsyche species (Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae) found in the Credit and Humber Rivers of southern Ontario were investigated through rearing studies, larval and adult collections, and analyses of densities and mortality of field populations of pupae. Hydropsyche slossonae was univoltine but was probably capable of producing a second generation under favourable conditions at the warmest station at which it occurred. Hydropsyche sparna was partially bivoltine at upstream stations and bivoltine at downstream stations. At downstream stations, the common species were Hydropsyche bronta . which was trivoltine. and Hydropsyche morosa , which was bivoltine. Hydropsyche sparna, H. bronta and H. morosa all exhibited a split-cohort development, in which not all of the summer-produced larvae completed development, pupated and emerged before the end of the growing season. Overwintering populations consisted of young larvae that had hatched from eggs laid by adults of the previous generation. Analysis of the temporal changes in the densities of living and dead pupae provided a reliable way to separate overwintering and spring- and summer-produced generations.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Previous studies have demonstrated that phenotypic traits of plants have the potential to affect interactions between herbivores and their natural enemies. Consequently, the impact of natural enemies on herbivore vital rates and population dynamics may vary among plant species. This study was designed to investigate the potential for density-dependent parasitism of an aphid herbivore feeding on six different host plant species.
2. Population densities of the aphid Aphis nerii B de F (Homoptera: Aphididae) and its parasitoid Lysiphlebus testaceipes Cresson (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were recorded within a single growing season on six different species of milkweed in the genus Asclepias L. (Asclepiadaceae). Asclepias species are known to vary in their quality as food for herbivores. Although data on plant quality were not available in this study, population data were analysed to determine the effects of different Asclepias species on rates of parasitism and aphid population growth.
3. Parasitism rates of A. nerii varied among Asclepias species but were temporally density dependent over at least some range of aphid density on all plant species. Aphid population growth rates also varied among Asclepias species, and declined with an increase in the maximum parasitism rates among plant species; however, in no case was density-dependent parasitism sufficient to prevent exponential population growth of aphids within the growing season. The results serve to emphasise that, if natural enemies are to regulate herbivore populations, density-dependent mortality is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for regulation.  相似文献

Abstract 1.  The incidence of parasitism by larvae of the mite species Trombidium breei was reported in one population of the lycaenid butterfly Polyommatus icarus , four populations of the satyrine butterfly Maniola jurtina , one population of the satyrine butterfly Aphantopus hyperanthus , and two populations of the satyrine butterfly Pyronia tithonus , as well as on one specimen of the dipteran Alophorus hemiptera . A considerable proportion of butterflies (11-50%) was infested in all study populations.
2. The pattern of infestation was examined in detail in M. jurtina . Males had a significantly higher incidence of infestation than females, and middle-aged butterflies had a higher incidence of infestation than old or young butterflies. The incidence of infestation peaked in the middle of the flight season, and this seasonal effect was independent of the effect of butterfly age.
3. Using a model based on capture-recapture data, it was estimated that a hypothetical ideal male M. jurtina that lives exactly the mean expected lifespan of 9-10 days has an approximately 75% chance of becoming infested with mites at least once during its lifetime, a mean time to first infestation of 3-4 days, and an average infestation persistence time of 2-3 days.
4. Capture-recapture data failed to show any effect of mite infestation on the lifespan or within-habitat movement rate of M. jurtina .
5. In experiments in which individual butterflies were taken out of their normal habitat and released, M. jurtina and P. tithonus that were infested with mite larvae did not differ from uninfested individuals in the efficiency with which they returned to suitable habitat. Thus, parasitism by T. breei larvae had no detectable effects on flight performance or orientation ability.
6. The results suggest that trombidiid mite larvae have limited potential in the biological control of insect pests.  相似文献

为了探讨大狼耙草的入侵风险,该文通过同质种植园实验,研究了不同养分水平下大狼耙草河北、江苏、江西和广西4个入侵种群在单种和各种群与近缘本地植物金盏银盘混种时的生长和竞争响应。结果表明:(1)单种时4个种群的株高、分枝数和总生物量在高养分下显著高于低养分下,繁殖比在低养分下显著高于高养分下(江苏种群除外); 混种时4个种群各生长参数的竞争响应在高养分下小于低养分下的。(2)各养分下,广西和江西种群的株高和总生物量显著高于河北种群,广西种群的分枝数最多[低、中和高养分下分别为(12±0.86)、(16.83±0.95)和(21.83±1.14)]; 河北种群的繁殖比在低养分 [(47.33±3.29)%]和高养分 [(25.74±2.82)%]下最高,且显著高于同养分下的广西种群 [低养分为(30.92±1.78)%和高养分为(19.77±1.22)%]。中养分下,河北种群总生物量的竞争响应(-0.51±0.04)显著大于广西种群(-0.35±0.06),繁殖生物量的竞争响应(-0.46±0.03)也显著大于广西种群(-0.28±0.07)。综上表明,高养分提高大狼耙草的生长和竞争能力,生长和竞争能力在种群间有差异,养分增加和入侵种群间基因流可能会潜在地提高大狼耙草的入侵风险,该研究结果有助于预测入侵植物的入侵风险。  相似文献

Seasonal abundance of resident parasitoids and predatory flies, and corresponding soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), densities were assessed in soybean fields from 2003 to 2006 at two locations in lower Michigan. Six parasitoid and nine predatory fly species were detected in 4 yr by using potted plants infested with soybean aphid placed in soybean fields. The parasitoid Lysiphlebus testaceipes Cresson (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and the predatory flies Aphidoletes aphidimyza Rondani (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), and Allograpta obliqua Say (Diptera: Syrphidae) were most numerous. Generally, L. testaceipes was more abundant late in the soybean growing season, but it also occurred during soybean vegetative growth; A. obliqua was more abundant during vegetative growth; and A. aphidimyza was common throughout the season. Soybean plants were visually inspected to estimate densities of soybean aphid, mummified aphids, and immature predatory flies. From 2003 to 2006, parasitism rates were inversely correlated with aphid density: percentage of parasitism was always very low (< or = 0.1%) at high aphid densities (> 100 aphids per plant), and higher parasitism, up to 17%, was observed at very low aphid densities (< 1 aphid per plant). Populations of immature predatory flies, particularly A. aphidimyza, generally increased in soybean fields with increasing soybean aphid populations, but aphids always outnumbered immature flies by 100-21,000-fold when flies were detected. Rearing field-collected aphid in 2006 substantiated that parasitism varied widely, with parasitism in most cases < 10%. Based on findings of low parasitism and predation, positive response to changing aphid densities by predatory flies but not parasitoids, early season abundance primarily of predatory flies, and past findings on these taxa's diversity and abundance, we discuss the potential use of exotic parasitoids and predatory flies to enhance soybean aphid biological control.  相似文献

This study evaluated how the proportional area of natural habitat surrounding a vineyard (i.e. landscape diversity) worked in conjunction with crop vigor, cultivar and rootstock selection to influence biological control of the western grape leafhopper (Erythroneura elegantula Osborn). The key natural enemies of E. elegantula are Anagrus erythroneurae S. Trjapitzin & Chiappini and A. daanei Triapitsyn, both of which are likely impacted by changes in landscape diversity due to their reliance on non-crop habitat to successfully overwinter. Additionally, E. elegantula is sensitive to changes in host plant quality which may influence densities on specific cultivars, rootstocks and/or vines with increased vigor. From 2010–2013, data were collected on natural enemy and leafhopper densities, pest parasitism rates and vine vigor from multiple vineyards that represented a continuum of landscape diversity. Early in the season, vineyards in more diverse landscapes had higher Anagrus spp. densities and lower E. elegantula densities, which led to increased parasitism of E. elegantula. Although late season densities of E. elegantula tended to be lower in vineyards with higher early season parasitism rates and lower total petiole nitrogen content, they were also affected by rootstock and cultivar. While diverse landscapes can support higher natural enemy populations, which can lead to increased biological control, leafhopper densities also appear to be mediated by cultivar, rootstock and vine vigor.  相似文献

Population dynamics and variability were examined in one-host–two-parasitoid experimental systems with different resource distributions: resource-clumped and resource-sparse conditions. The system consists of a seed beetle host, Callosobruchus chinensis, and two parasitoid wasps, Anisopteromalus calandrae (Pteromalidae) and Heterospilus prosopidis (Braconidae). In the resource-clumped condition, suitable hosts for parasitism (the late fourth-instar larvae and pupae) were clumped in 1 large resource patch, but they were scattered evenly among 16 small patches in the resource-sparse condition. Population censuses were conducted at 10-day intervals in long-term cultures, renewing 10 g of azuki beans (Vigna angularis). In both resource conditions, the first period was a single-species system of C. chinensis only, and A. calandrae was added in the second period. The one-host–one-parasitoid system with C. chinensis and A. calandrae showed stable population dynamics with small fluctuations. After addition of H. prosopidis in the third period, two of three replicates persisted to day 800 in each resource condition, although one replicate in each went to extinction at an immediate outbreak of the H. prosopidis population after the introduction. Population variabilities of C. chinensis and H. prosopidis were significantly higher and the mean population size of A. calandrae was significantly smaller in the resource-sparse condition than that in the resource-clumped one. A short-term experiment on parasitism efficiencies revealed that H. prosopidis parasitized significantly more at a low host density in the resource-sparse condition than in the resource-clumped one. Mutual interference of H. prosopidis was weak enough at low parasitoid densities but became abruptly stronger with high densities. Providing fresh hosts in a mixture of already parasitized ones, host-searching behaviors of a parasitoid were recorded by video for 3 h and were compared between the two wasp species. H. prosopidis could parasitize fresh hosts more efficiently than A. calandrae through frequent long-distance walks (walking to distant beans at one bout or outside a clump of beans with hosts and back soon on a distant bean of the clump) after reencounters with parasitized hosts. Considering all the experimental results, populations were judged to be more fragile and more likely to go to extinction in the resource-sparse condition than in the resource-clumped one. At 21 °C,Spalangia nigra Latreille (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) averaged 29.3 days between exposure and emergence of 1st progeny from host house flies,Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae). At 27 °C, the average developmental time to 1st emergence was reduced to 26.6 days, and a majority of adult wasps emerged from host house fly puparia between 29 and 40 days postoviposition. The sex ratio of progeny ranged from 1.4 to 1.8 female-to-male, but all progeny of virgin females were male. Male wasps lived from 6.8–15 and females 11–17.8 days at 27 °C; honey as a food source increased longevity. No significant differences in parasitism byS. nigra were associated with host house fly pupal densities ranging from 1 to 200 pupae per female-male pair of wasps, but average percent parasitism decreased at host densities greater than 50. House fly pupae exposed to parasitism at ages ranging from 4 to 96 h did not differ in subsequent production of adult flies.S. nigra did not demonstrate preference for house flies or stable flies,Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) as hosts. The results of these studies indicate thatS. nigra may contribute significantly to previously unexplained mortality of house flies and stable flies.   相似文献

The parasitoid complex of Yponomeuta evonymellus L. (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae), the bird cherry ermine moth (BCEM), was sought in South Korea with the goal of identifying its potential biological controls. Thirteen primary and two secondary parasitoids were found. Diadegma armillatum (Grav.), Herpestomus brunnicornis Grav. (Icheumonidae), and Zenillia dolosa (Meigen) (Tachinidae) were the most important parasitoids causing 3.5%, 7.1%, and 7.7% of the combined parasitism of the host larvae and pupae, respectively. The composition of parasitoid species was more diverse in larvae than in pupae; 10 species were reared from larvae, compared to six from pupae. The parasitoid complex contributed to the relatively low mortality levels of Yponomeuta evonymellus with the combined total rate of parasitism of 29.6% for the host larvae and pupae. This level is below that found in some European populations (50%) and is not greater than the larval rate of parasitism (31%) found in the congeneric apple ermine moth in Korea. This low rate of parasitism is partly attributed to the parasitism by Ageniaspis fuscicollis (1%) detected in Yponomeuta evonymellus, which is similar to that detected in Yponomeuta evonymellus in European reports. This is the first report of the parasitoid complex attacking the BCEM in Korea.  相似文献

Sublethal effects of an azadirachtin-based botanical insecticide (commercial product NeemAzal-T/S) on behaviour, life history traits and population growth of one commercial (Dutch strain, D) and two Serbian populations (Bujanovac, B; Negotin, N) of Encarsia formosa Gahan were evaluated in laboratory bioassays. In a two-choice test, parasitoids from all tested populations preferred to parasitise the untreated whitefly nymphs over those treated with 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25 and 3.12?mg/l of azadirachtin. All concentrations caused significant deterrent effects after 24?h, and the following deterrence indices were calculated: 9.7–60.9% (B), 5.5–57.5% (N) and 12.9–63.5% (D). The longevity of adults exposed for 48?h to residues of the botanical insecticide (applied at LC50) was shorter (1.5–1.7 days) than that of control wasps. Both daily and total parasitism were significantly reduced (by 41.7, 48.3 and 60.1% for N, D and B, respectively) compared to control, as well as adult emergence in the F1 generation. The instantaneous rate of increase (ri) of surviving adults was also significantly reduced (by 13.2, 19. 3 and 20.5%, for populations N, B, and D, respectively). Adults from all tested populations, emerged from pupae treated with the botanical insecticide applied at LC50, showed reduced parasitism, adult emergence, and ri levels, but the reduction was significant only for adult emergence of B and ri of B and N. Juvenile development of the parasitoid in treated pupae was significantly extended, compared to control. The implications of these results on integrated control of the greenhouse whitefly are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. A major, and largely unexplored, uncertainty in projecting the impact of climate change on biodiversity is the consequence of altered interspecific interactions, for example between parasitoids and their hosts. The present study investigated parasitism in the Brown Argus butterfly, Aricia agestis ; a species that has expanded northward in Britain during the last 30  years in association with climate warming.
2.  Aricia agestis larvae suffered lower mortality from parasitoids in newly colonised areas compared with long-established populations. This result was consistent over four consecutive generations (2 years) when comparing one population of each type, and also when several populations within the historical and recently colonised range of the species were compared within a single year. Thus, A. agestis appears to be partially escaping from parasitism as it expands northwards.
3. Reduced parasitism occurred despite the fact that several of the parasitoid species associated with A. agestis were already present in the newly colonised areas, supported predominantly by an alternative host species, the Common Blue butterfly, Polyommatus icarus .
4. As the species expand their distributions into areas of increased climatic suitability, invasion fronts may escape from natural enemies, enhancing rates of range expansion. The results suggest that the decoupling of interspecific interactions may allow some species to exploit a wider range of environments and to do so more rapidly than previously thought possible.  相似文献

Summary Larvae and pupae of lycaenid butteflies are often associated with ants: this is usually a mutualism in which ants guard the lycaenids from natural enemies, and the lycaenid larvae and pupae provide sugars and amino acids for the ants. A possible consequence of the interaction is spatially correlated ant and lycaenid distributions, but the phenomenon is poorly documented. We examined the lycaenid Plebejus argus, which is tended by Lasius ants. Within habitat patches, P. argus eggs, larvae and pupae were all spatially associated with Lasius. On a larger scale, the densities of butterflies in different habitat patches and populations, and whether the butterfly was present or not, were correlated with Lasius ant densities. The association of P. argus with Lasius ants is consistent among populations, and occurs at several spatial scales. Other aspects of the ecology of P. argus are more variable.  相似文献

Population structure and spatial distribution with growth ofthe direct-developing gastropod, Batillaria cumingi, were investigatedon two shores of differing substrata. Sand-mud shore and rockyshore populations differed in size structure; first-year snailswere ca. 7 mm in shell length (SL) in both populations, whereassecond-year snails, merging with older cohorts, measured 15–25mm SL in the sand-mud shore population and ca. 15 mm SL in therocky shore population. Egg distribution matched adult distributionin the sand-mud shore population, but was more restricted thanthat of adults in the rocky shore population. The distributionof newly-hatched juveniles (0–1 mm SL) was restricted inboth populations, but the growth stage at which snails extendedtheir distribution differed between the two populations; 1–2.5mm SL on the sand-mud shore and 5 mm SL on the rocky shore. Floatingachieved by early juveniles (ca. 2 mm SL), was commonly observedin the sand-mud population, but rarely in the rocky shore population.The sudden expansion in distribution of the 1–2.5 mm SLgrowth stage in the sand-mud shore population is consideredto have been caused by floating, while expansion of the distributionof older growth stages (>5 mm SL) in the rocky shore populationprobably occurs by crawling. Parasitism and pathogen mortality of Lymantria dispar were compared between host populations of different densities in Slovakia and Austria. Over a period of 4 years, L. dispar eggs, larvae, and pupae were collected in a stage‐specific manner at three mixed oak stands in each country and reared in the laboratory to assess parasitoid and pathogen mortality. At sites with low host densities, L. dispar abundance was artificially augmented by exposing egg masses and young larvae. We ascertained marked differences between the natural enemy complexes of L. dispar populations in Slovakia and Austria. Overall, pathogens caused highest mortality in the former and parasitoids in the latter. Moreover, the species composition differed significantly between both countries. High variation was also observed between years and host populations at different densities. The investigations revealed that egg parasitization was low in Slovak L. dispar populations, and no egg parasitoids were found in Austria. Larval and pupal parasitism was low at sites with outbreak populations, but higher at the Austrian than at the Slovak site. The tachinid Parasetigena silvestris was the dominant species at elevated host densities. Nuclear polyhedrosis virus also caused significant mortality in these cases. An increase in parasitism by several species was noticed after the breakdown of L. dispar populations. The ichneumonid Phobocampe spp. caused high levels of parasitism during the post‐culmination years. At sites where host abundance increased in the first year of the study, significant differences between the Austrian and the Slovak locality could be ascertained. Mortality was low in the population at the latter site, and host abundance increased to outbreak levels the year after. The population at the Austrian site suffered high parasitism by the tachinids P. silvestris and Blepharipa pratensis and this might have contributed to the prevention of a further increase in L. dispar abundance in this locality. Braconids showed a strong reaction to the local, artificial increase in host density at study plots with innocuous L. dispar populations. Particularly high parasitism by Glyptapanteles liparidis was observed at the Austrian site, but G. porthetriae and Cotesia melanoscela also accounted for significant mortality in both low‐density populations. The artificial L. dispar populations were usually eradicated by natural enemies before pupation of the hosts.  相似文献

Indirect interactions among species can greatly affect their abundances and the structure of the community they live in. Using a field experiment, we tested the hypothesis that congeneric butterfly species interact indirectly through a shared pupal parasitoid. We predicted that symmetrical apparent competition would lead to high parasitism of both species, and the effect would increase with regional butterfly abundance. Instead, parasitism of one host, Melitaea cinxia, was reduced in the presence of the second host, M. athalia. Parasitism of M. athalia did not differ whether or not M. cinxia was present. This pattern did not vary with regional butterfly abundance, though overall rate of parasitism did. Details of the experiment suggest that the apparent commensalism occurred because M. cinxia pupae are protected by silk tents whereas M. athalia are exposed, causing locally foraging parasitoids to favour the more accessible host where the two are present together. The local short-term apparent commensalism favouring M. cinxia opposes the landscape scale trend, in which parasitism increases where butterfly density is high. The outcome of this study illustrates short-term apparent commensalism, that host suitability can depend on relative accessibility, and that indirect interactions occurring at different scales may be in opposition.  相似文献

The reliability of morphological characters and host differential plants for distinguishing between two populations of Meloidogyne incognita was studied. Population A (originally from North Carolina) had incognita-type perineal patterns. A single egg mass subpopulation of population A had a mixture of incognita and acrita perineal patterns with 33% of the patterns atypical for either species. Population B (from Georgia) had predominantly acrita-type patterns with only about 5% atypical patterns. The head shapes of males from both populations were mainly M. incognita. On the basis of stylet length, both populations conformed to M. incognita acrita. Both populations were identified as M. incognita race 1 by reaction on the North Carolina differential hosts. Reactions on azalea and pepper gave no clear identification of the populations. We concluded that there is no relation between perineal pattern, male head shape, and parasitism of host differentials with the two populations studied.  相似文献
