Summary Modified reciprocal transplant experiments were conducted with the annual plant species Impatients capensis and I. pallida to partition the influence of environment on fitness into two components; that of (1) conspecific neighbours occupying each transplant site, and (2) the abiotic and biotic features of each site exclusive of the conspecific neighbours. In the within-species reciprocal transplant series, differences in survivorship and fruit production by cleistogamous flowers were attributable primarily to the effect of conspecific neighbours. In addition, plants surrounded by neighbours from the site of origin produced significantly more fruit from chasmogamous flowers compared with plants surrounded by neighbours from the alien site. In the between-species reciprocal transplant series, one transplant site was consistently associated with greater survivorship and fruit production regardless of the identity of neighbouring plants. The results suggest that different aspects of the environment in these reciprocal transplant experiments (conspecific neighbours, other species, physical factors) determine fitness in different situations. 相似文献

Although the volume and chemical composition of nectars are known to vary among plant species and to affect pollinator response to plants, relatively little is known of the variation in volume, and sugar and amino acid composition within species. We collected nectar from Impatiens capensis in a nested design: three flowers from each of three plants from each of three populations. This design enabled us to quantify variation within individual plants, among plants within populations, and among populations. Using high performance liquid chromatography, we analyzed the sugar and amino composition of the 27 flowers. Analysis of variance showed that none of the parameters (volume, concentrations of three sugars and 24 amino compounds) varied within individuals. Variation in nectar volume was not significant among plants but was nearly significant among populations. Of the three sugars detected (sucrose, glucose, and fructose), the only significant variation was that of sucrose among populations. Concentrations of 12 amino compounds varied significantly at the plant level while 7 amino compounds varied among populations. The results indicate that: (1) pooling of nectar samples from flowers of individual plants can be an acceptable methodology for those seeking to understand within species variation; (2) amino compounds appear to vary more than either volumes or sugar concentrations; (3) future studies should assess how much of the observed variation is due to genetic versus environmental differences; (4) additional studies should examine the geographic variation in nectar parameters and pollinators of I. capensis in order to assess the role different pollinators play in shaping nectar composition. 相似文献

Nectar guides are common among insect-pollinated plants, yet are thought to be rare or absent among hummingbird-pollinated plants. We hypothesize that the lower lips and trumpet-shaped orifices of many hummingbird flowers act as nectar guides to direct hummingbirds to the flowers' nectar and orient the birds for pollination. To test this hypothesis we conducted laboratory experiments using flowers of Monarda didyma (bee balm) and M. fistulosa (wild bergamot), which have orifice widths of about 4 mm and 2 mm, respectively, and latex flowers with orifice widths of 4 mm and 2 mm and three orifice shapes (trumpet, lipped, and lipless). Rubythroated hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) made fewer errors during bill insertion and spent a smaller proportion of their feeding visit in error at M. didyma flowers than at M. fistulosa flowers, and at unaltered flowers of both species than at flowers with lower lips removed. Handling times were longer at both lipped and lipless flowers of M. didyma than at those of M. fistulosa, and at lipped than at lipless flowers of M. didyma. The average duration of contact between a hummingbird and a flower's anthers and stigma was longer at M. didyma than at M. fistulosa for both lipped and lipless flowers, and at lipped than at lipless M. didyma flowers. Hummingbirds missed the openings of latex flowers with their bills more frequently and spent a greater percentage of their total feeding visit in error at (i) 2-mm than at 4-mm flowers of all three shapes, (ii) lipless flowers than at trumpet or lipped flowers, and (iii) lipped flowers than at trumpet flowers of both widths. The duration of hummingbird/anther contact was longer at (i) 2-mm than at 4-mm flowers of all shapes, (ii) lipped than at trumpet or lipless flowers, and (iii) lipless than at trumpet flowers for both widths. No significant differences in handling times of hummingbirds were observed among any of the latex flower shapes or widths. Our results demonstrate that orifice shapes can act as guides by reducing the frequency of feeding errors by visiting hummingbirds, and that effects of orifice shape on pollination must be considered in conjunction with flower widths and locations of anthers and stigmas. 相似文献

Summary When pollen of Impatiens glandulifera was cultured in aerated liquid medium for 1 h, 70% of the pollen grains germinated; these attained an average tube length of 1 mm. Subsequently, these aerobic growth conditions were changed to anaerobic by substituting a nitrogen inlet for the air inlet. As a result, the pollen tubes stopped elongating and burst. The ultrastructural changes which occurred upon inducing anoxia were studied with samples taken at 0 s, 45 s, and 4 min after changing the gas. Anoxia caused rapid and considerable changes in the ultrastructure of the dictyosome vesicles involved in cell wall formation. There was an increase in the osmiophyly of the vesicle content, and the presence of fibrillar material became apparent. Simultaneously, the fusion behavior of the dictyosome vesicles changed. Instead of the normal fusion of the dictyosome vesicles with the plasma membrane, there was a premature fusion of the vesicles with each other inside the cytoplasm that resulted in the formation of aggregates. Furthermore, the cell wall precursors that were excreted were not incorporated in their usual configuration into the growing cell wall. Summary The foraging behavior of the pollinators of tristylous Pontederia cordata was studied to determine if differences in floral morphology would lead to preferential visitation of the floral morphs. Although nectar production is not different in the three floral morphs, differences in the production and size of pollen grains produced by the three anther levels results in the morphs offering variable amounts of resources to pollen-collecting insects. Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) and the solitary bee Melissodes apicata used P. cordata primarily as a nectar source and therefore did not seem to exhibit any morph preference. In contrast, honeybees visited flowers mainly for pollen and preferred to forage on long-level anthers of the short-and mid-styled morphs. An analysis of the composition of corbicular pollen loads indicated that, relative to the frequency of production in the population: 1) honeybees collected an excess of pollen from long-level anthers; 2) bumblebees collected the three types of pollen without any apparent preference; and 3) M. apicata preferentially collected pollen from the short-level anthers — presumably because their proboscides are modified by the presence of tiny hairs. The results suggest that P. cordata in Ontario is serviced by a diverse, unspecialized pollinator fauna which is not co-adapted to the tristylous floral polymorphism. 相似文献

Zygomorphic flowers are usually more complex than actinomorphic flowers and are more likely to be visited by specialized pollinators.
Complex zygomorphic flowers tend to be oriented horizontally. It is hypothesized that a horizontal flower orientation ensures
effective pollen transfer by facilitating pollinator recognition (the recognition-facilitation hypothesis) and/or pollinator
landing (the landing-control hypothesis). To examine these two hypotheses, we altered the angle of Commelina communis flowers and examined the efficiency of pollen transfer, as well as the behavior of their visitors. We exposed unmanipulated
(horizontal-), upward-, and downward-facing flowers to syrphid flies (mostly Episyrphus balteatus), which are natural visitors to C. communis. The frequency of pollinator approaches and landings, as well as the amount of pollen deposited by E. balteatus, decreased for the downward-facing flowers, supporting both hypotheses. The upward-facing flowers received the same numbers
of approaches and landings as the unmanipulated flowers, but experienced more illegitimate landings. In addition, the visitors
failed to touch the stigmas or anthers on the upward-facing flowers, leading to reduced pollen export and receipt, and supporting
the landing-control hypothesis. Collectively, our data suggested that the horizontal orientation of zygomorphic flowers enhances
pollen transfer by both facilitating pollinator recognition and controlling pollinator landing position. These findings suggest
that zygomorphic flowers which deviate from a horizontal orientation may have lower fitness because of decreased pollen transfer. 相似文献

We tested for genetic variation in light response curves and their acclimation to sun versus shade in recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of the annual species Impatiens capensis derived from a cross between sun and shade populations. We exposed replicates of 49 RILs to experimentally manipulated light levels (open versus shade) in a greenhouse and measured photosynthetic light response curves, height, biomass, and reproduction. Plants were taller in the shade treatment, but we were unable to detect differences between light treatments (i.e., acclimation) in the maximal rate of photosynthesis, the light compensation point, or the quantum efficiency of photosynthesis. Genotypic selection analyses indicated that higher maximal rates of carbon assimilation and higher light compensation points (typical of sun-acclimated light curves) were favored by natural selection in both light treatments. Thus, it appears that the pattern of selection on photosynthetic parameters may not depend on light environment in this species.M. Shane Heschel and John R. African honeybees, Apis mellifera, are characterised by frequent disturbance-induced absconding. However, the effectiveness in preparation before such disturbance-induced
absconding has not been rigorously quantified yet. We investigated the effectiveness of preparation for disturbance-induced
absconding by evaluating colony phenotypes prior to and after absconding in ten colonies of the Cape honeybee, A. m. capensis. Seven non-absconding colonies at the same apiary were used as controls. While seven absconded colonies left neither stores
nor brood behind, three colonies abandoned only a small area of honey, pollen, open or capped brood. At the end of the observations,
the control colonies still had pollen and honey stores and brood. The mean reduction rate between a major disturbance and
the absconding event was 0.052 ± 0.018 cm2 stores and open brood per worker per day. Our results demonstrate that disturbance-induced absconding can also occur with
preparation, if the disturbance is not highly destructive and enough time for preparation is available. We conclude that Cape
honeybee colonies can show a considerable high effectiveness in their preparation before disturbance-induced absconding, which
limits the loss of colony resources. In light of the general high mobility of African honeybee colonies such an efficient
behaviour is probably adaptive.

The effect of red and white light on ethylene production was investigated in several plant species. In most cases light inhibited ethylene production. However, stimulation or no effect were also observed in a few species. In those plants where light inhibited ethylene synthesis, the effect of red light was much stronger than that of white light.Both red and white light inhibited ethylene production in green and etiolated seedlings and green leaves of Impatiens balsamina L. The inhibitory effect of red light was stronger than that of white light and much more pronounced when the plants were pretreated with ACC. The effect of red light could be reversed by far-red light. These results suggest that light affects the ethylene forming enzyme (EFE) activity and that its action is mediated by phytochrome. 相似文献

General characteristics of light sensitivity of Impatients wallerana seeds were investigated. Germination was absolutely dependent on light, irrespective of temperature. High percentages of germination were obtained by exposure to long periods of illumination or, alternatively, to several repeated short irradiations with red light. In this case, responsiveness to light was not altered by increasing either the initial incubation period in darkness or the dark intervals between short exposures. Effects of red light were reversed by far-red light, thus demonstrating the involvement of phytochrome. Summary The development of wall ingrowths in leaf blade epidermal cells of the marine angiospermZostera capensis was studied by electron microscopy. Prior to the appearance of ingrowths long profiles of endoplasmic reticulum cisternae become arranged peripherally closely following the contours of the walls. The plasmalemma assumes a wavy appearance and in regions where wall ingrowths first start forming (i.e., along the radial, inner tangential and transverse walls) the plasmalemma becomes separated from the walls by an undulating extracytoplasmic space. Small, irregular projections of secondary wall material make their appearance here. Paramural bodies, dictyosomes, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and possibly also microtubules seem to be closely associated with the initiation and subsequent development of wall projections. As the cells mature, new ingrowths arise in a centrifugal direction along the radial and transverse walls. When wall ingrowths reach a certain stage of their development, mitochondria become strongly polarized towards them and become closely associated with the plasmalemma which ensheaths the ingrowths. There is often also a close association between ER cisternae and the involuted plasmalemma of the wall projections. Initially ingrowths are slender, curved structures, but become more complex as the cells mature. Ingrowths are most extensively developed along the inner tangential and transverse walls. As epidermal cells age there is a loss of wall material from the ingrowths. The probable significance of the formation of wall ingrowths in the epidermal cells is also discussed. 相似文献

Summary We investigated the effects of plant density on cleistogamous (CL) and chasmogamous (CH) flowering phenology and seed production in a natural Impatiens capensis population, by censusing individually marked plants at experimentally reduced and natural densities. CL flowering was earlier at natural density. This plastic density response may have resulted from a stress-related threshold for CL flowering; slower growing plants at natural density flowered earlier. Although apparently triggered by slow early growth, early CL flowering also involved an additional cost for later growth rate. In contrast, CH flowering was unrelated to relative growth rate, but apparently required a size threshold. Experimental density reduction resulted in earlier CH flowering and a dramatic increase in the percentage of plants producing CH flowers. Individual CL and CH flowering duration and flower production were greater at reduced density. These density-dependent effects caused differences between treatments in the shape and location of population flowering phenology curves. Moreover, the percentage of CH seeds produced per individual was much higher at reduced density. At natural density total seed production per plant was lower and more hierarchical than at lower density, suggesting that dominance and suppression shape jewelweed fitness distributions. 相似文献

Summary Three Japanese species of Impatiens, which secrete nectar continuously in long spurs, were visited by Bombus diversus workers consecutively throughout the day. B. diversus workers showed characteristic patterns of behavior in flower use, flower choice, and patch departure. (1) Bumblebees stayed longer on a flower which had been unvisited for a while than on a flower which had been visited recently. A fossil trimerous flower from the Turonian (ca. 90 MYBP, Upper Cretaceous) of New Jersey is described as a new genus in the familyLauraceae. The fossil flower is charcoalified and preserved in exceptional detail. This fossil specimen is particularly remarkable in that several pollen grains have been preserved; pollen grains ofLauraceae generally have very thin exine and are rarely preserved in the fossil record. Although the specimen is incomplete and lacks anthers, there are sufficient structural details preserved to permit an assignment to theLauraceae, as well as comparisons with the tribePerseeae. Summary Cytokinesis in Impatiens sultani microspore mother cells is simultaneous. It starts with the formation of small ingrowths of the surrounding callosic wall. Next, an incomplete cell plate is formed by fusion of small dictyosome vesicles. The cell plate consists of a network of anastomosing tubules and sacs. Aggregates of fusing vesicles are associated with bundles of microtubules, which are oriented perpendicular to the plane of the future cell walls. In the sacculate parts of the cell plate, some callose is deposited, while the associated microtubules disappear. The cell walls ultimately develop by enlargement of the previously formed wall ingrowths, which successively incorporate the elements of the cell plate. Summary We compared the size distributions of leaves on naturally-occurring crowded and experimentally thinned uncrowded individuals of Impatiens pallida in southeastern Pennsylvania. Crowding decreased the number of leaves on individual plants and altered the distribution of leaf size. Crowded individuals had smaller leaves, but the size (length) inequality of the leaf population did not change. The relationships between the height of a plant and the mean and maximum length of its leaves were significantly different for crowded and uncrowded plants. There were weak positive relationships between height and total leaf area, and height and total number of leaves for uncrowded plants, whereas crowded plants showed tighter but curvilinear relationships between these variables. Our results point out the strengths and the limitations of viewing canopies as populations of modules. 相似文献

Plant–pollinator interactions are well-known examples of mutualism, but are not free of antagonism. Antagonistic interactions
and defenses or counter-defenses are expected particularly in nursery pollination. In these systems, adult insects, while
pollinating, lay their eggs in flowers, and juveniles consume the seeds from one or several fruits, thereby substantially
reducing plant fitness. The outcome of such interactions will depend, for the plant, on the balance between pollination versus
seed predation and for the larvae on the balance between the food and shelter provided versus the costs imposed by plant defenses,
e.g., through abortion of infested fruits. Here, we examine the costs and benefits to the larvae in the nursery-pollination
system Silene latifolia/Hadena bicruris. Using selection lines that varied in flower size (large- vs. small-flowered plants), we investigated the effects of variation
in flower and fruit size and of a potential defense, fruit abortion, on larval performance. In this system, infested fruits
are significantly more likely to be aborted than non-infested fruits; however, it is unclear whether fruit abortion is effective
as a defense. Larger flowers gave rise to larger fruits with more seeds, and larvae that were heavier at emergence. Fruit
abortion was frequently observed (ca. 40% of the infested fruits). From aborted fruits, larvae emerged earlier and were substantially
lighter than larvae emerging from non-aborted fruits. The lower mass at emergence of larvae from aborted fruits indicates
that abortion is a resistance mechanism. Assuming that lower larval mass implies fewer resources invested in the frugivore,
these results also suggest that abortion is likely to benefit the plant as a defense mechanism, by limiting both resources
invested in attacked fruits, as well as the risk of secondary attack. This suggests that selective fruit abortion may contribute
to the stability of mutualism also in this non-obligate system. 相似文献

Summary Earlier studies showed that under natural conditions foreign pollen receipt is correlated with loss of seed set in populations of P. viscosum. Here, we report on experimental pollinations using foreign pollen from two co-flowering species that share pollinators with P. viscosum. Experiments were designed to ascertain whether improper pollen transfer causes reduced seed set under controlled conditions and, if so, to determine the stage at which interference occurs. In flowers pre-treated by pollination with either Mertensia or Castilleja pollen, adherence of subsequently deposited conspecific pollen grains was unaffected. However, conspecific grains had significantly lower germination and ovule fertilization success in flowers receiving foreign pollen than in controls. These results suggest that pollinator infidelity in high alpine plant communities can reduce female reproductive success of P. viscosum by inhibiting the performance of conspecific pollen grains. Negative effects of Mertensia and Castilleja pollen were comparable despite large interspecific differences in pollen grain morphology. Accordingly, susceptibility to foreign pollen interference appears to be an intrinsic property of P. viscosum that is not dependent on the unique structural properties of pollen produced by competitive species. 相似文献
