Different camouflages work best with some background matching colour. Our understanding of the evolution of skin colour is based mainly on the genetics of pigmentation (“background matching”), with little known about the evolution of the neuroendocrine systems that facilitate “background adaptation” through colour phenotypic plasticity. To address the latter, we studied the evolution in vertebrates of three genes, pomc, pmch and pmchl, that code for α‐MSH and two melanin‐concentrating hormones (MCH and MCHL). These hormones induce either dispersion/aggregation or the synthesis of pigments. We find that α‐MSH is highly conserved during evolution, as is its role in dispersing/synthesizing pigments. Also conserved is the three‐exon pmch gene that encodes MCH, which participates in feeding behaviours. In contrast, pmchl (known previously as pmch), is a teleost‐specific intron‐less gene. Our data indicate that in zebrafish, pmchl‐expressing neurons extend axons to the pituitary, supportive of an MCHL hormonal role, whereas zebrafish and Xenopus pmch+ neurons send axons dorsally in the brain. The evolution of these genes and acquisition of hormonal status for MCHL explain different mechanisms used by vertebrates to background‐adapt.  相似文献

Captive animals of several species change their behavioral pattern and hormonal profile in response to physical (for example, cage size and temperature) and social (for example, group size and social isolation) modification of their environment. To evaluate the effect of environmental change in captivity, the affiliative (contact/proximity and allogrooming) and individual (approach, leaving, scent mark, locomotion, and autogrooming) behavior of five family groups of common marmosets, Callithrix jacchus, were recorded on weekdays (non-quiet) and at the weekend (quiet) for two months. In addition, fecal samples were collected for four of these groups to measure their cortisol levels under both conditions. The behavioral pattern and hormonal profile of breeding pairs and their offspring were modified by different management routines used in the experimental conditions. We found that the animals spent more time in affiliative interactions at the weekend, whereas on weekdays, they showed more individual behaviors. Moreover, cortisol levels of breeding pairs and their offspring were higher on weekdays, suggesting that common marmosets living in captivity react to environmental modification by changing their behavioral and hormonal pattern.  相似文献

Three wilty mutants of tomato, flacca, sitiens, and notabilis, were compared with two control normal cultivars, Rheinlands Ruhm and Lukullus, for concentration of abscisic acid and root resistance to water flow. In addition, the three mutants treated with abscisic acid during development were compared with control mutant plants for stomatal opening and root resistance. The hormonal concentration was estimated by coleoptile assay and gas chromatography. Stomatal opening was estimated by measuring rate of transpiration and by examining leaf imprints. Root resistance was estimated by measuring the amount of exudate from roots of decapitated plants and the difference between the osmotic pressure of the exudate and the root medium. A lower level of abscisic acid was found in all three mutants as compared with the control normal plants. In addition, root resistance to water flow was higher in the three mutants than in the control normal types. All three mutants completely reverted to normal phenotypically, including stomatal and root resistances, when treated with abscisic acid. It has been suggested that the first hormonal change in the mutants is that of abscisic acid, and from it proceed the other changes. This work was supported in part by a research grant from the Ford Foundation (Ford-6, A-VII).  相似文献

This cross‐sectional study aimed to examine the association between different body composition measures, menstrual cycle characteristics, and hormonal factors in a population‐based sample of young women. The study sample included 726 Australian women aged 26–36 years who were not currently taking hormonal contraceptives and were not currently pregnant or breast feeding. Anthropometric measures included BMI, waist circumference (WC), and waist‐hip ratio (WHR). Menstrual cycle characteristics were self‐reported and usual cycles defined as short (≤25 days), normal (26–34 days), or long (≥35 days). Cycles were defined as irregular if there were ≥15 days between the longest and shortest cycle in the past 12 months. Fasting serum levels of sex hormone‐binding globulin (SHBG), testosterone, insulin, and glucose were measured and the free androgen index (FAI) derived. Compared with those of normal weight, obese women had at least a twofold greater odds of having an irregular cycle, whether defined by BMI (odds ratio (OR) = 2.61; 95% CI = 1.28–5.35), WC (OR 2.28; 95% CI = 1.16–4.49), or WHR (OR = 2.27; 95% CI = 1.09–4.72). Body composition measures were significantly positively associated with fasting insulin, testosterone, and FAI, and negatively associated with SHBG (P < 0.01). Fasting insulin, SHBG, and FAI had the strongest influence on the associations between obesity and irregular cycles, with statistically significant ORs of having an irregular cycle being attenuated to near null values following adjustment. In conclusion, both overall and central obesity were significantly associated with having an irregular menstrual cycle. This association was substantially influenced by hormonal factors, particularly insulin and SHBG.  相似文献

Apparently contrasting aproaches, ie genetic engineering and screening of new microorganisms, play essential complementary roles to develop current industrial microbiology. Three topics, production and modification of milkclotting proteinases by genetic engineering, hormonal control of secondary metabolism in streptomyucetes, and screening of bioactive metabolites, are introduced as cases of such a hybrid approach, while symbiotic microorganisms are discussed as an example of the vastterra incognita still remaining for the future microbiology.  相似文献

Rapidly accumulating evidence indicates that light reduces the human pineal's inhibitory effect on the gonads. Artificially extended daily photoperiods, by allowing increased production of gonadal steroids, have probably accentuated the secular growth trend and may be causing males, especially adolescents and young adults, to have an overready hormonal response to situations which elicit aggressive behavior. The author thanks George M. The author summarizes the results of many-year application of the model of in vitro sturgeon oocyte maturation for different purposes, such as comparison of gonadotropic activities of different preparations, selection of females for breeding, and studying the effects of different factors in order to improve the breeding technology. Special attention is paid to factors that can affect the results of experiments on hormonal stimulation of in vitro oocyte maturation and ovulation and their interpretation. Two other phenomena are discussed: the inhibitory effect of gonadotropic pituitary hormones on the progesterone-induced in vitro oocyte maturation and the nonhormonal induction of oocyte maturation, further studies of which can elucidate the mechanisms underlying the hormonal regulation of oogenesis in sturgeons.  相似文献

The growth regulator Stifun at all concentrations tested (0.033, 0.33, 3.3, and 33 mg/L) affected the hormonal status of wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Zhnitsa) and stimulated plant growth. This was evident in activation of cell division and elongation, as well as in the increase in shoot and root length, water content, and dry weight. Effects of Stifun on roots and shoots depended on concentration. Application of Stifun at the optimal growth-stimulating concentration (0.033 mg/L) elevated the levels of zeatin, zeatin riboside, dihydrozeatin riboside, isopentenyladenosine, and IAA in roots of 2-day-old seedlings, but reduced the ABA content. The levels of ABA, IAA, dihydrozeatin, and dihydrozeatin riboside in shoots increased, while the levels of zeatin riboside, isopentenyl adenine, and isopentenyladenosine decreased. The results indicate that the hormonal system plays a part in the plant response to growth-stimulating action of Stifun.  相似文献

This study investigated the growth trajectories and the relative relevance levels of nutrition, disease, and hormonal status at various developmental stages among children in adverse environments to provide population‐based empirical evidence for the life history theory. Three years of longitudinal anthropometric data in 1‐year intervals were obtained from 418 boys and girls aged 0 to 12 years at recruitment. Following the final measurement, the main survey, which included blood and feces sampling, 3‐h interval food consumption recall surveys for energy and nutrient intakes and anthropometry, was performed. Blood and feces were used for detecting, respectively, anemia and hormonal (IGF‐I and IGFBP‐3) levels as well as intestinal helminthiasis (Ascaris, Trichuris, and hookworm). The major findings of this study are summarized as follows: 1) the growth velocity of the subject children lagged behind international standards during childhood and juvenility but caught up during early adolescence; 2) diseases, both intestinal helminths and anemia, had significant effects on growth in childhood but not at older ages; and 3) hormonal status significantly affected growth in the children, with its highest significance in early adolescence. A larger growth than international standards in early adolescence likely follows programmed hormonal mechanisms after the onset of puberty. The onset of puberty might be associated with adequate amounts of nutrient intake and be mediated by hormonal function, because the IGF‐IZ score was significantly correlated with energy and protein intakes at the transitional period from juvenility to adolescence, when puberty occurs. β‐1,3‐glucans such as paramylon act as elicitors in plants, modifying the hormonal levels and the physiological responses. Plant hormones affect all phases of the plant life cycle and their responses to environmental stresses, both biotic and abiotic. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a root treatment with Euglena gracilis paramylon on xylem hormonal levels, photosynthetic performance and dehydration stress in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Paramylon granules were processed to obtain the linear fibrous structures capable to interact with tomato cell membrane. Modulation of hormone levels (abscisic acid, jasmonic acid and salicylic acid) and related physiological responses such as CO2 assimilation rate, stomatal and mesophyll conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, transpiration rate, water‐use efficiency, quantum yield of photosystem II and leaf water potential were investigated. The results indicate a clear dose‐dependent effect of paramylon on the hormonal content of xylem sap, photosynthetic performance and dehydration tolerance. Paramylon has the capability to enhance plant defense capacity against abiotic stress, such as drought, by modulating the conductance to CO2 diffusion from air to the carboxylation sites and improving the water‐use efficiency.  相似文献

A central goal in evolutionary ecology is to characterize and identify selection patterns on the optimal phenotype in different environments. Physiological traits, such as hormonal responses, provide important mechanisms by which individuals can adapt to fluctuating environmental conditions. It is therefore expected that selection shapes hormonal traits, but the strength and the direction of selection on plastic hormonal signals are still under investigation. Here, we determined whether, and in which way, selection is acting on the hormones corticosterone and prolactin by characterizing endocrine phenotypes and their relationship with fitness in free‐living great tits, Parus major. We quantified variation in circulating concentrations of baseline and stress‐induced corticosterone and in prolactin during the prebreeding (March) and the breeding season (May) for two consecutive years, and correlated these with reproductive success (yearly fledgling number) and overwinter survival in female and male individuals. In both years, individuals with high baseline corticosterone concentrations in March had the highest yearly fledgling numbers; while in May, individuals with low baseline corticosterone had the highest yearly reproductive success. Likewise, individuals that displayed strong seasonal plasticity in baseline corticosterone concentrations (high in March and low in May) had the highest reproductive success in each year. Prolactin concentrations were not related to reproductive success, but were positively correlated to the proximity to lay. Between‐year plasticity in stress‐induced corticosterone concentrations of males was related to yearly variation in food abundance, but not to overall reproductive success. These findings suggest that seasonally alternating directional selection is operating on baseline corticosterone concentrations in both sexes. The observed between‐year consistency in selection patterns indicates that a one‐time hormone sample in a given season can allow the prediction of individual fitness.  相似文献

Failed interspecific embryo transfer between Dall's sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) and domestic ewes (Ovis aries), and a paucity of physiological data available for the Dall's sheep, provided incentive for developing a reproductive database in Dall's sheep. Urine samples were collected on a regular basis from a captive herd of Dall's sheep during the breeding to lambing interval over a 3 year period. To provide comparative endocrine data during pregnancy, samples also were collected during a single gestation period from five Suffolk ewes. All urine samples were analyzed for pregnanediol-3-glucuronide (PdG) and estrone conjugates (EC). Behavioral observations from Dall's sheep were made each year during the rut and lambing periods to calculate estrous cycle and gestation lengths. Placentas from Dall's sheep (n = 20) and Suffolk ewes (n = 10) were collected, the total number of cotyledons counted, and the length, width, area, and weight of eight cotyledons/horn from each placenta calculated. Endocrine and behavioral results indicated that the Dall's sheep is seasonally polyestrous and monovulatory, with a mean estrous cycle length of 18.2 ± 0.3 days, a mean luteal phase of 11.8 ± 0.5 days, and an average gestation length of 171.6 ± 0.9 days. While hormonal patterns for pregnancy generally were similar between the two species, there was a pronounced difference in the magnitude of hormone concentrations, particularly PdG, and an absence of a marked preparturition EC rise in domestic sheep. Cotyledon numbers, weight, and area were smaller (P < 0.05) in the Dall's sheep, compared to Suffolk ewes. These data suggest that unsuccessful interspecies embryo transfer attempts may have been due to failed fetal/maternal communications resulting from hormonal and/or placental differences. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The 5-methoxypodophyllotoxin contents of plants, cell cultures and regenerated plants of Linum flavum are compared. It is demonstrated that cell cultures are able to produce amounts of 5-methoxypodophyllotoxin that are comparable to the concentration in fully differentiated plants. The production of 5-methoxy-podophyllotoxin depends on the hormonal balance of the growth medium. The use of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid as the growth regulator is favourable for 5-methoxypodophyllotoxin production when compared to naphthylacetic acid. The 5-methoxypodophyllotoxin accumulation appears to be positively related to the internal cell volume.  相似文献

In BY-2 cultured tobacco cells (Nicotiana tabacum L.), depletion of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and addition of benzyladenine (BA) caused amyloplast formation, a decrease in cell multiplication, and an increase in cell size. These changes were primarily triggered by the depletion of 2,4-D, and facilitated by the addition of BA. An increase in the starch content of BY-2 cells was always accompanied by a reduction in cell multiplication. However, when hormonal conditions were unsuitable for amyloplast formation, the starch content of the cells did not increase, even if cell multiplication was forcibly terminated by the addition of aphidicolin. This result indicates that the hormonal conditions themselves, and not the decrease in cell multiplication, induce amyloplast formation in BY-2 cultured tobacco cells.Abbreviations BA benzyladenine - 2,4-D 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid - DAPI 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole - DMSO dimethyl sulfoxide - NAA 1-naphthylacetic acid - PMSF phenyl methyl sulfonyl fluoride  相似文献

Following 10 days of infestation by the aphid Myzus persicae there was an increase in the amount of growth inhibiting substances and a decrease in cytokinins, gibberellins and auxins in infested as compared with similar uninfested radish seedlings. Even after previously infested seedlings have been freed of aphids for 10 days, differences in the hormone balance remained. The possible relationships between the changes in hormonal balance and the effect of the aphid infestation on growth, translocation and wilting are discussed.  相似文献

Hormonal Interactions and Stomatal Responses   总被引:18,自引:4,他引:14
Both environmental and hormonal factors and their interactions affect stomatal behavior. Methodologies for identifying hormonal interactions affecting stomatal function are reviewed. Although there is abundant evidence that abscisic acid (ABA) closes stomata, evidence that the other classical plant hormones (auxins, cytokinins, ethylene, gibberellins) in isolation alter stomatal response often comes from exogenous applications to detached epidermes and leaves, rather than correlation of endogenous concentrations with stomatal conductance (gs). Evidence for hormonal interactions comes from isolated tissues with exogenous hormones supplied at nonphysiological concentrations, or from variation in stomatal response to xylem ABA concentration in planta. The roles of hormonal changes in causing stomatal closure following changes in soil environment are considered. Although soil drying induces multiple changes in xylem sap composition, analysis of stomatal responses suggests a dominant role for increased endogenous ABA concentrations and relatively little evidence of roles for other hormones. A similar picture emerges from studies of soil compaction. Although soil flooding decreases ABA export from the root system, there is some evidence that apoplastic ABA accumulation elicits stomatal closure. Stomatal closure following nitrogen deprivation does not appear to involve ABA and may provide a suitable experimental system to investigate roles for other hormones. The availability of mutant or transgenic lines with altered hormone homeostasis or sensitivity provides opportunities to screen for altered stomatal behavior in response to different environments, and may provide new evidence that hormonal interactions are important in the control of stomatal behavior.  相似文献

Oxylipin metabolism represents one of the important hormonal and defensive mechanisms employed by plants, algae, or animals. It begins mostly with the reaction of lipoxygenases (LOXs), which catalyze the oxygenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids to form the corresponding hydroperoxides. At present, little information about LOXs in cyanobacteria has been reported. Herein, we report the first isolation of two LOX genes (NpLOX1 and NpLOX2) from a cyanobacterium, Nostoc punctiforme ATCC29133. Incubations of recombinant NpLOX1 and NpLOX2 proteins expressed in Eschelichia coli with linoleic acid resulted in the predominant formation of linoleic acid 13-S-hydroperoxide. Other C18 and C20 fatty acids could also be substrates for NpLOX enzymes. Phylogenetic analysis of NpLOX sequences showed that the NpLOX enzymes shared a high homology with LOX sequence of a bacterial pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and these bacterial LOXs formed a subfamily distinct from those of plants, algae, and mammals.  相似文献

The effect of various social environments on sociosexual behavior was examined in six young female cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus oedipus) and in three established breeding females. Behavioral observations and hormonal samples were collected on young females while they were living with their families, when they were isolated from conspecifics, and after they were paired with an unrelated male. While living with the family, all females showed a suppression of fertility and low frequencies of sociosexual behavior. Following removal from the family, isolated females displayed an increase in rate of scent marking and an increase in hormonal levels. When young females were paired with males, they were exposed to scent secretions from their natal families, from an unfamilar family, and from a control for a total of 24 weeks. After pairing, hormonal levels increased dramatically, and ovarian cyclicity began. An increase in sociosexual behavior and elevated levels of scent marking accompanied this physiological change. Newly paired females had higher rates of affiliative behavior and scent marking than did established breeding females. However, both newly paired and established breeding males were more likely to initiate contact, grooming bouts, and social sniffing than were females. Time to first ovulation was later in females who were exposed to scent secretions from their natal families than it was in those females given a control for the first 8 weeks following pairing. No female conceived during exposure to scent secretions. However, once normal ovarian cycling had begun or a pregnancy was established, exposure to scent secretions had no effect. Thus, the social environment influences the fertility, sociosexual behavior, and pair bond formation of cotton-top tamarins. In addition, chemical stimuli found in the scent secretions produced by the natal family are most likely involved in reproductive suppression.  相似文献

Social life is profitable, but it facilitates conflicts over resources and creates interdependence between individuals. Separating highly social animals triggers intense reactions aimed at re‐establishing lost connections. Less is known, however, about behavioural and physiological responses to separation in socially facultative species, where individuals temporarily form groups and may subsequently leave them. Non‐breeding common ravens (Corvus corax) gather in large numbers at feeding and roosting sites, but otherwise spend time seemingly solitary or in small subgroups. We here studied how ravens cope with being socially isolated, and investigated the life characteristics that might explain potential individual differences. For this, we individually separated captive subadult ravens (n = 25) and housed them in physical and visual isolation from their group members across 4 d. During the separation period, we collected behavioural data and measured the amount of immunoreactive corticosterone metabolites from bird droppings to assess the ravens’ physiological stress response. We found behavioural indicators of stress at the start of the separation, when ravens showed higher levels of tension than of comfort – a pattern that reversed at the end of the separation. Furthermore, we found that the upbringing of ravens affected their behaviour during separation. Hand‐raised birds produced more vocalisations in the beginning of the separation, and were less active at the end, while the reverse pattern occurred with parent‐raised ravens. Contrary to our predictions, we did not find differences in hormonal responses between the beginning and end of the separation period or any link between hormonal responses and behaviours. Ravens’ behavioural responses to social separation stress seem to be dependent on their arousal states, although possible links with hormonal reactions remain unclear. Our results show that behavioural reactions are not always linked with hormonal responses to stress, and further emphasise the importance of investigating effects of early‐life experiences.  相似文献
