This study aimed to assess the conditions under which monkeys might produce common effects in an instrumental task. One group of Tonkean macaques (Macaca tonkeana) and two groups of rhesus macaques (M. mulatta) were given series of tests in which food incentives were placed under stones of various weights. In the Tonkean group, the simultaneous action of two subjects in moving the same stone was a relatively frequently occurring event: coaction was more effective than individual action for moving heavy stones; however, there were no signs of coordination among partners and no improvement through learning. In rhesus groups, instances of coaction were extremely rare, and rates of agonistic interactions were higher than in the Tonkean group. It is suggested that “coproduction” represented an emergent phenomenon resulting from social interactions and, as such, was dependent on the level of interindividual tolerance.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to ascertain the substratum preferendum of Viviparus bengalensis and Melania scabra. When the food (Spirogyra) was offered both on stones and sand, the average distribution of V. bengalensis and M. scabra was 19% and 10% on stone and 52% and 80% on sand respectively. In the absence of food from both stone and sand and also when sand alone was baited, both snails flocked principally towards sand. When stone alone was provided with food, V. bengalensis and M. scabra displayed 16% and 15% distribution on stone and 49% and 45% on sand respectively. Ecological significance of these results is discussed.  相似文献

Wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) are renowned for their use of tools in activities ranging from foraging to social interactions. Different populations across Africa vary in their tool use repertoires, giving rise to cultural variation. We report a new type of percussive technology in food processing by chimpanzees in the Nimba Mountains, Guinea: Treculia fracturing. Chimpanzees appear to use stone and wooden “cleavers” as tools, as well as stone outcrop “anvils” as substrate to fracture the large and fibrous fruits of Treculia africana, a rare but prized food source. This newly described form of percussive technology is distinctive, as the apparent aim is not to extract an embedded food item, as is the case in nut cracking, baobab smashing, or pestle pounding, but rather to reduce a large food item to manageably sized pieces. Furthermore, these preliminary data provide the first evidence of chimpanzees using two types of percussive technology for the same purpose.  相似文献

The fine structure of Amoeba discoides, Amoeba dubia, and Amoeba amazonas was studied and compared with that of Amoeba proteus. The different kinds of amebas showed general similarities but differed in the ultrastructural details of their organelles. With respect to fine structure, A. discoides was indistinguishable from A. proteus, while both A. dubia and A. amazonas had distinctive features. The nuclei of all had a prominent honeycomb-like fibrous lamina, but A. dubia differed from the others in the distribution of nucleoli within the nucleus. The mitochondria of A. amazonas were unusual in having a variable pattern of cristae, some being plate-like and others tubular. Golgi bodies in A. amazonas had a greater proportion of vesicles and a smaller number of cisternae than those of the others, while Golgi bodies in A. dubia had highly flattened cisternae without a lining of filamentous material such as is found in the other types. The plasma membrane of A. dubia also lacked the prominent filamentous cell coat common to A. proteus and other amebas. The relation between the Golgi apparatus and the cell coat and the significance of the degree of development of the cell coat for pinocytosis and other phenomena is considered. The experimental use of these cells, including the formation of hybrids by nuclear transplantation is discussed.  相似文献

In Tenkere, Sierra Leone, a community of wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) spent long hours eating the fruits and flowers of the Kapok (Ceiba pentandra) tree. The branches of this species are covered in sharp thorns which make movement in their high canopies problematic for the chimpanzees. In an apparent attempt to increase their mobility and to ease the discomfort of lengthy bouts of eating in these trees, some of the Tenkere chimpanzees have been observed using stick tools as foot (“stepping-sticks”) and body (“seat-sticks”) protection against the painful thorns. This form of tool-using is culturally unique to the Tenkere chimpanzees, as at other sites where these apes have been observed eating parts of kapok trees, there are no published records of this tool technology. In three of the stepping-stick tool use incidents, the chimpanzee used the tool(s), held between their greater and lesser toes, in locomotion. This form of tool use is the first recorded case of habitually used tools that can be justifiably categorized as being “worn” by any known wild population of Pan troglodytes. The stone marten (Martes foina) and the pine marten (M. martes) are closely related mammalian carnivores potentially subject to exploitative competition. The recent expansion of the pine marten into the intensively cultivated plain of the River Po (NW Italy), where previously only stone marten occurred, offered an interesting opportunity to analyse their relationships. We studied the distribution and diet of Martes species and trophic niche overlap between martens and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in two study areas, each with two pseudoreplicates, by analysing genotyped faeces. Our results seem to confirm the displacement of the stone marten from one study area, the pine marten being the only Martes species occurring where previously the stone marten had been reported. We found a large food niche overlap between red fox and both stone and pine martens, but with evidence of size-related differences in the consumption of some food items. We hypothesised that, due to the poor prey-base of the environment, highly altered by intensive crop cultivation, intense interspecific competition originally occurred between the red fox and stone marten. The heightening of interspecific competition caused by the entry of the pine marten in the predator guild may have caused the displacement of the stone marten, at least temporarily. The mechanism of such displacement needs to be clarified through further surveys in areas where the three species occur sympatrically.  相似文献

Sidedness polymorphism in flatfish has been linked to ecological selection between morphs. However, the alternate hypothesis that morphological differences between right‐ and left‐sided forms may be due to errors during development, as a consequence of disturbed homeostasis, which still remains largely unexplored. Here, we examined the case of Platichthys flesus (flounder), a polymorphic flatfish exhibiting large and clinal variation in the frequency of the left‐sided morph, which is the reversed condition in this generally right‐sided species. An integrated approach consisting of the analyses of shape variation, stomach contents, and skeletal anomalies was used. Morphological differences were observed between morphs, which are in agreement with previous findings in a congeneric species (Platichthys stellatus). In parallel, significant differences in feeding choices were detected, suggesting a coherent association between subtle morphological differences between morphs and their use of trophic resources. Skeletal anomalies and meristic counts did not corroborate the hypothesis that morphometric divergence in reversed individuals may be caused or reinforced by developmental instability. J. Seven hundred fifty-four strains of mycobacteria were examined using 97 characters, and a “Hypothetical Mean Organism” (HMO) was prepared for each species using numerical classification. The species could be defined as a group of strains showing a mean S-value of 90% or more to a HMO and showing mean S-values of 89% or less to other HMOs. The following species were recognized: (1) M. tuberculosis, combining M. tuberculosis and M. bovis into one species; (2) M. kansasii; (3) M. novum; (4) M. avium, combining M. avium, M. nonchromogenicum, M. gastri, M. intracellulare and M. scrofulaceum into one species; (5) M. marinum; (6) M. thermoresistibile; (7) M. chitae; (8) M. borstelense; (9) M. abscessus; (10) M. fortuitum; (11) M. phlei; (12) M. aurum; (13) M. parafortuitum; (14) M. lacticola; (15) M. smegmatis. Dendrogram of the species showed two main stems, indicating that the genus Mycobacterium be divided into two subgenera, subgenus Mycobacterium (from M. tuberculosis to M. chitae) and subgenus My cornycobacterium (from M. borstelense to M. smegmatis). Some discrepancy was noted between the results of numerical classification using HMOs and that of the “proper” numerical classification, and this discrepancy is discussed.  相似文献

The efficient use of nitrogen by crops can minimise environmental risks and maximise returns to farmers. Under organic farming systems, this can be achieved by adjusting the fertilisation management and/or using genetic variability. Seven durum wheat (Triticum durum) cultivars and three emmer (Triticum dicoccum) cultivars were assessed under an organic farming system over a non‐consecutive 4‐year period (2005–11) in Foggia (southern Italy). The objectives were to investigate the agronomic and qualitative characteristics, and to evaluate the agronomic efficiency and adaptability according to three N fertilisation levels (0, 40, 80 kg N ha?1). A split‐plot design was used, with three replications in each year. Nine traits were investigated: heading time, plant height, seed yield, number of spikes m?2, harvest index, specific weight, 1000‐seed weight, and protein and gluten contents. Increasing N to 80 kg ha?1 increased plant height (+7.3%), seed yield (+22.1%), spike density (+16.6%), and protein (+9.8%) and gluten (+2.1%) contents. The emmer genotypes and the oldest durum wheat ‘Cappelli’ showed the highest protein and gluten contents (mean, 13.9%, 11.2%, respectively). The maximum N agronomic efficiency [AE(N)] and N recovery efficiency [RE(N)] were seen for the modern durum wheat cultivars under 40 kg ha?1 N treatment: ‘Duilio’, ‘Iride’ and ‘Varano’. The significant correlation between AE(N) and RE(N) and the year of release of the durum wheat cultivars (r = 0.53, P < 0.05, F = 4.7 for AE(N) and r = 0.57, P < 0.01, F = 5.7 for RE(N), respectively; n = 14) showed that the genetic breeding of this species for high grain yield is associated with an increase in the efficiency of N fertiliser use under organic farming. The highly significant effect for the Genotype × Environment interaction (F = 18.1, P < 0.001) of seed yield indicate the possibility to select for stable genotypes across environments. Based on the additive main effects and multiplicative interaction analysis, and the yield stability index, the varieties ‘Iride’ and ‘Varano’ show high‐stability responses and good seed yields under all N fertiliser treatments. Therefore, these varieties can be recommended for organic farming systems in Mediterranean areas.  相似文献

Eating behavior can be influenced by the rewarding value of food, i.e., “liking” and “wanting.” The objective of this study was to assess in normal‐weight dietary restrained (NR) vs. unrestrained (NU) eaters how rewarding value of food is affected by satiety, and by eating a nonhealthy perceived, dessert‐specific food vs. a healthy perceived, neutral food (chocolate mousse vs. cottage cheese). Subjects (24NR age = 25.0 ± 8.2 years, BMI = 22.3 ± 2.1 kg/m2; 26NU age = 24.8 ± 8.0 years, BMI = 22.1 ± 1.7 kg/m2) came to the university twice, fasted (randomized crossover design). Per test‐session “liking” and “wanting” for 72 items divided in six categories (bread, filling, drinks, dessert, sweets, stationery (placebo)) was measured, before and after consumption of chocolate mousse/cottage cheese, matched for energy content (5.6 kJ/g) and individual daily energy requirements (10%). Chocolate mousse was liked more than cottage cheese (P < 0.05). After consumption of chocolate mousse or cottage cheese, appetite and “liking” vs. placebo were decreased in NR and NU (P < 0.03), whereas “wanting” was only decreased in NR vs. NU (P ≤ 0.01). In NR vs. NU “wanting” was specifically decreased after chocolate mousse vs. cottage cheese; this decrease concerned especially “wanting” for bread and filling (P < 0.05). To conclude, despite similar decreases in appetite and “liking” after a meal in NR and NU, NR decrease “wanting” in contrast to NU. NR decrease “wanting” specifically for a nonhealthy perceived, “delicious,” dessert‐specific food vs. a nutritional identical, yet healthy perceived, slightly less “delicious,” “neutral” food. A healthy perceived food may thus impose greater risk for control of energy intake in NR.  相似文献

The closely related mustelids European pine marten (Martes martes) and stone marten (Martes foina) sympatrically inhabit a large area of Europe. However, given our limited knowledge of their bioecological relationships, their extremely elusive behaviour and the fact that their faeces cannot be distinguished on the basis of morphology alone, it is very difficult to monitor their populations. In this study, we describe a reliable non-invasive polymerase chain reaction (PCR)–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method for distinguishing between M. martes and M. foina based on the analysis of deoxyribonucleic acid extracted from faeces samples. The method was specifically designed to avoid possible interference from potential prey mammals and other sympatric carnivores. The procedure consists of PCR amplifying a mitochondrial D-loop region followed by digesting the resulting 276-bp-long amplicons with the restriction enzymes HaeIII and RsaI. To assess the efficiency of this technique, we conducted a preliminary field study across the potential sympatric distribution areas of both marten species in the northern Iberian Peninsula. Out of 359 faeces samples collected, we identified 80 as specimens from the stone marten and 235 from the pine marten. Unequivocal species identification was thus possible in 88% of the faeces samples collected. These findings reveal the combined use of non-invasive genetic sampling and GIS technology to be a reliable and cost-effective procedure for improving our knowledge of the spatial distributions of sympatric marten species. This protocol could also be used to identify and improve information gaps, to develop effective research and management programmes and in population and landscape genetics studies of marten species. Species composition, prevalence, and intensities of species colonizing the northern stone crab Lithodes maia in Dalnezelenetskaya Bay (Barents Sea) were examined. Sixteen species attached to the body surface or the host gills were identified. The most common associates were hydrozoans (100.0%), especially Obelia longissima, and the amphipods Ischyrocerus commensalis (93.8%). Species composition of the stone crab epifauna was similar to that observed for the Lithodid crab Paralithodes camtschaticus, except that tubular polychaetes Pomatoceros triqueter and Placostegus tridentatus were found only on the surface of the stone crab, while fish leeches Johanssonia arctica occurred on the red king crabs. Differences in percentage of infested hosts, and mean intensities of some associates are influenced by the conditions of carapace structure and size of both crab species.  相似文献

Shifts between adaptive peaks, caused by sampling drift, are involved in both speciation and adaptation via Wright's “shifting balance.” We use techniques from statistical mechanics to calculate the rate of such transitions for a population in a single panmictic deme and for a population which is continuously distributed over one- and two-dimensional regions. This calculation applies in the limit where transitions are rare. Our results indicate that stochastic divergence is feasible despite free gene flow, provided that neighbourhood size is low enough. In two dimensions, the rate of transition depends primarily on neighbourhood size N and only weakly on selection pressure (≈sk exp(− cN)), where k is a number determined by the local population structure, in contrast with the exponential dependence on selection pressure in one dimension (≈exp(− cNs)) or in a single deme (≈exp(− cNs)). Our calculations agree with simulations of a single deme and a one-dimensional population.  相似文献

The origin of the genus Homo in Africa signals the beginning of the shift from increasingly bipedal apes to primitive, large-brained, stone tool-making, meat-eaters that traveled far and wide. This early part of the human genus is represented by three species: Homo habilis, Homo rudolfensis, and Homo erectus. H. habilis is known for retaining primitive features that link it to australopiths and for being the first stone tool makers. Little is known about H. rudolfensis except that it had a relatively large brain and large teeth compared to H. habilis and that it overlapped in time and space with other early Homo. Our understanding of the paleobiology and evolution of the larger-brained H. erectus is enhanced due to its rich fossil record. H. erectus was the first obligate, fully committed biped, and with a body adapted for modern striding locomotion, it was also the first in the human lineage to disperse outside of Africa. The early members of the genus Homo are the first to tip the scale from the more apish side of our evolutionary history toward the more human one.  相似文献

Since 1989, efforts to understand the nature of interfirm resource sharing in the form of industrial symbiosis and to replicate in a deliberate way what was largely self‐organizing in Kalundborg, Denmark have followed many paths, some with much success and some with very little. This article provides a historical view of the motivations and means for pursuing industrial symbiosis—defined to include physical exchanges of materials, energy, water, and by‐products among diversified clusters of firms. It finds that “uncovering” existing symbioses has led to more sustainable industrial development than attempts to design and build eco‐industrial parks incorporating physical exchanges. By examining 15 proposed projects brought to national and international attention by the U.S. President's Council on Sustainable Development beginning in the early 1990s, and contrasting these with another 12 projects observed to share more elements of self‐organization, recommendations are offered to stimulate the identification and uncovering of already existing “kernels” of symbiosis. In addition, policies and practices are suggested to identify early‐stage precursors of potentially larger symbioses that can be nurtured and developed further. The article concludes that environmentally and economically desirable symbiotic exchanges are all around us and now we must shift our gaze to find and foster them.  相似文献

The maximum carboxylation capacity of Rubisco, Vc,max, is an important photosynthetic parameter that is key to accurate estimation of carbon assimilation. The gold‐standard technique for determining Vc,max is to derive Vc,max from the initial slope of an ACi curve (the response of photosynthesis, A, to intercellular CO2 concentration, Ci). Accurate estimates of Vc,max derived from an alternative and rapid “one‐point” measurement of photosynthesis could greatly accelerate data collection and model parameterization. We evaluated the practical application of the one‐point method in six species measured under standard conditions (saturating irradiance and 400 μmol CO2 mol?1) and under conditions that would increase the likelihood for successful estimation of Vc,max: (a) ensuring Rubisco‐limited A by measuring at 300 μmol CO2 mol?1 and (b) allowing time for acclimation to saturating irradiance prior to measurement. The one‐point method significantly underestimated Vc,max in four of the six species, providing estimates 21%–32% below fitted values. We identified ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate‐limited A, light acclimation, and the use of an assumed respiration rate as factors that limited the effective use of the one‐point method to accurately estimate Vc,max. We conclude that the one‐point method requires a species‐specific understanding of its application, is often unsuccessful, and must be used with caution.  相似文献

Circadian clocks are autonomous time-keeping mechanisms that allow living organisms to predict and adapt to environmental rhythms of light, temperature and food availability. At the molecular level, circadian clocks use clock and clock-controlled genes to generate rhythmicity and distribute temporal signals. In mammals, synchronization of the master circadian clock located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei of the hypothalamus is accomplished mainly by light stimuli. Meal time, that can be experimentally modulated by temporal restricted feeding, is a potent synchronizer for peripheral oscillators with no clear synchronizing influence on the suprachiasmatic clock. Furthermore, food-restricted animals are able to predict meal time, as revealed by anticipatory bouts of locomotor activity, body temperature and plasma corticosterone. These food anticipatory rhythms have long been thought to be under the control of a food-entrainable clock (FEC). Analysis of clock mutant mice has highlighted the relevance of some, but not all of the clock genes for food-entrainable clockwork. Mutations of Clock or Per1 do not impair expression of food anticipatory components, suggesting that these clock genes are not essential for food-entrainable oscillations. By contrast, mice mutant for Npas2 or deficient for Cry1 and Cry2 show more or less altered responses to restricted feeding conditions. Moreover, a lack of food anticipation is specifically associated with a mutation of Per2, demonstrating the critical involvement of this gene in the anticipation of meal time. The actual location of the FEC is not yet clearly defined. Nevertheless, current knowledge of the putative brain regions involved in food-entrainable oscillations is discussed. We also describe several neurochemical pathways, including orexinergic and noradrenergic, likely to participate in conveying inputs to and outputs from the FEC to control anticipatory processes.  相似文献
