The structural characteristics of the supraorbital ridge in three extent primate species and fossil Neanderthals are described in this study. Surface morphology and patterns of trabecular organization as observed in cross-sectional collections of Papio, Macaca and Pan are compared with similar traits encountered in the Pech de l'Aze infant, Gibraltar child, and La Quina 5, La Chapelle-aux-Saints, Broken Hill, Skhul V, Skhul IX, Tabun I and Gibraltar adult Neanderthals. Periods of rapid appositional growth of the browridges by means of fine cancellous bone formation and its subsequent remodeling and consolidation are temporally correlated with dental development and eruption sequences.  相似文献

Necropsy data from a Primate Center were used in a study of the brain weight-body weight relationships of 12 species of nonhuman primates. The sample sizes ranged from six Cercopithecus aethiops to 163 Macaca mulatta. By plotting mean brain-mean body weight of each species on log-log paper, it was shown that the straight line fitting the plots of all species had a slope of 0.72. Slopes for three species of the genus Macaca, and for six species of the family Cebidae, were 0.61 and 0.81 respectively. Coefficients of determination of the three lines were greater than 0.90. Two species of the family Cebiade, Saimiri sciureus and Aotus trivirgatus, had equivalent body weights, but the former had a 30% larger brain than the latter. The results suggest that brain-body weight scaling characteristics of primate species can be studied effectively using necropsy data. Some statistically significant discrepancies between these and published data, however, show that more data are required to describe these characteristics with greater certainty.  相似文献

Masticatory-stress hypotheses and the supraorbital region of primates   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The purpose of this study is to test various masticatory-stress hypotheses about the evolution and function of well-developed browridges of higher primates. This was done by measuring and analyzing patterns of in vivo bone strain recorded from three-element rosette strain gages bonded to the supraorbital region and to other portions of the bony face of Macaca fascicularis and Papio anubis during mastication and incision. The magnitude and direction of the principal strains recorded support Endo's hypothesis that the supraorbital region during mastication and incision is bent in the frontal plane (Endo, 1966). Our data do not, however, support his hypothesis that the supraorbital region is bent more during incision than during mastication. The data also demonstrate that overall levels of supraorbital strain are not larger in more prognathic subjects. Most importantly, the data indicate that the supraorbital region of nonhuman catarrhines is strained very little during mastication and incision. This indicates that there is much more supraorbital bone than is necessary both to counter masticatory loads and to provide an adequate safety factor to failure for these loads. This in turn suggests that the macaque and baboon browridges can be considerably reduced in size and still maintain these required structural characteristics. Thus, our experiments provide no support whatsoever for those hypotheses that directly link browridge morphology to masticatory stress (cf. Endo, 1966; Russell, 1983, 1985). A recent review of Endo's original work indicates that this latter statement is also true for humans (Picq and Hylander, 1989). We conclude, therefore, that there is no good reason to believe that enlarged browridges in living and/or fossil primates are structural adaptations to counter intense masticatory forces. The evolution of browridge morphology in primates is best explained on the basis of factors related to the position of the brain relative to the orbits (Moss and Young, 1960). When these structures are widely separated, as in gorillas, the large intervening space must be bridged with bone. In addition, enough bone must be present within the supraorbital and bridged regions to prevent structural failure due to non-masticatory external forces associated with highly active primates (e.g., accidental traumatic forces applied to the orbits and neurocranium). This requirement results in both pronounced browridges and in much more supraorbital bone than is necessary to counter routine cyclical stress during mastication and incision. This in turn explains why bone strains recorded from the supraorbital region are extremely small relative to other portions of the primate face during mastication and incision.  相似文献

All living organisms need to consume nutrients to grow, survive, and reproduce, making the successful acquisition of food resources a powerful selective pressure. However, acquiring food is only part of the challenge. While all animals spend much of their daily activity budget hunting, searching for, or otherwise procuring food, a large part of what is involved in overall nutrition occurs once the meal has been swallowed. Most nutritional components are too complex for immediate use and must be broken down into simpler compounds, which can then be absorbed by the body. This process, digestion, is catalyzed by enzymes that are either endogenous or produced by the host's microbial population .1 Research shows that the nutritional value of food is partially constrained by the digestive abilities of the microbial community present in the host's gut and that these microbes rapidly adapt to changes in diet and other environmental pressures .2 An accumulating body of evidence suggests that endogenously produced digestive enzymes also have been, and still are, common targets of natural selection, further cementing their crucial role in an organism's digestive system .3–5  相似文献

Models of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in laboratory animals are important tools for research into pathogenic mechanisms and the development of effective, safe therapies. Rodent models (rats and mice) have provided important information about the pathogenic mechanisms. However, the evolutionary distance between rodents and humans hampers the translation of scientific principles into effective therapies. The impact of the genetic distance between the species is especially seen with treatments based on biological molecules, which are usually species-specific. The outbred nature and the closer anatomical, genetic, microbiological, physiological, and immunological similarity of nonhuman primates to humans may help to bridge the wide gap between inbred rodent strain models and the heterogeneous RA patient population. Here we review clinical, immunological and pathological aspects of the rhesus monkey model of collagen-induced arthritis, which has emerged as a reproducible model of human RA in nonhuman primates.  相似文献

We examined demographic records from 13 captive primate species and a human population to determine age-related changes in female reproduction. In most species age-specific fertility declined and interbirth intervals increased with age. Using an operational definition of termination of reproduction based on individual variance in interbirth intervals, a proportion of females in most nonhuman species had terminated reproduction before death. Compared to other primates, a greater proportion of chimpanzees and human females ceased reproduction, and humans, in particular, were reproductively inactive for relatively longer than would be expected from their body weight. These empirical data quantify the extent of reproductive termination and thereby extend hitherto anecdotal accounts of this phenomenon in primates.  相似文献

To investigate the evolution of the Rh blood-group system in anthropoid apes, New and Old World monkeys, and nonprimate animals, serologic typing of erythrocytes from these species with antibodies specific for the human Rh blood-group antigens was performed. In addition, genomic DNA from these animals was analyzed on Southern blots with a human Rh-specific cDNA.Consistent with earlier reports, serologic results showed that gorilla and chimpanzee erythrocytes had epitopes recognized by human Rh D and c antisera, and gibbon erythrocytes were recognized by the c antisera. Surprisingly, some Old and New World monkeys also expressed a Rh c epitope on their erythrocytes. No erythrocytes from the nonprimate animals reacted specifically with any of the human Rh antisera.Southern blot analysis with a human Rh-specific cDNA probe detected Rh-related sequences in anthropoid apes, all New and Old World monkeys, and in most nonprimate animals tested. Although some Rh-related restriction fragments were conserved across species lines in primates, the Rh locus was more polymorphic in chimpanzees and gorillas than in humans. In addition, restriction fragments segregating with the presence of the D antigen in humans were present in the primate species that expressed the D antigen.  相似文献

 Interleukin 16 (IL-16) is synthesized as a 67 000 M r precursor (pro-IL-16), but only a carboxy terminal part of 12 000–14 000 M r is secreted by CD8(+) lymphocytes. This lymphokine binds to CD4 and has been shown to induce migration, affect the activation state of T cells, and inhibit immunodeficiency virus replication. It has been suggested that CD8(+) cell-derived soluble factors play a pivotal role in protecting natural-host nonhuman primates from developing immunodeficiency following SIV infection. In a first attempt to address this question, we cloned and sequenced the IL-16 cDNA from different primates. Here we report the pro-IL-16 sequence from chimpanzees, African green monkeys (AGM), rhesus macaques, and cynomolgus macaques. In order to compare and analyze structural motifs possibly involved in processing, intracellular targeting, or secretion, we extended our study to the New World monkeys saimiri and aotus and to the mouse. Alignments of deduced amino acids reveal that the human protein shares 99% similarity to that of chimpanzees, approximately 95% to rhesus, cynomolgus and AGM, about 90% to aotus and saimiri, and 77.5% to the mouse. The localization and distribution of inhibin/activin subunits was evaluated in the testes of three nonhuman primate species (Macaca fascicularis, M. mulatta, M. arctoides), of young (31 to 43 years) and old (60 to 85 years) men, and of men with disturbed or arrested spermatogenesis using immunohistochemical techniques (peroxidase-anti-peroxidase and alkaline-phosphatase/ anti-alkaline-phosphatase technique). Specific polyclonal (anti-porcine inhibin -1-32 and anti-bovine activin A) and monoclonal (anti-human inhibin -1-32 and anti-human activin A-82-114) antisera were employed. Among all nonhuman primate species and in men, inhibin/activin subunits were present in the cytoplasm of Sertoli cells and Leydig cells but not in germ cells. No relationship could be established between the staining pattern for inhibin/activin subunits and the completeness or the stage of the spermatogenic process. The staining for the A-subunit in Sertoli cells appeared more intense in the testes of old men compared with that of young men. The majority of Leydig cells contained either the -subunit and A-subunit or the A-subunit alone. The signal for the A-subunit was remarkably intense in normal and hyperplastic human Leydig cells. These observations demonstrate the presence of inhibin/activin subunits in Sertoli cells and Leydig cells of adult primates and raise the possibility that these subunits or their respective dimers (inhibin A/activin A) might subserve a paracrine/ autocrine role in the adult primate testis. Also, the possibility of specific differences in the -1-32 subunit and the A-82-114 subunit region among certain primate species arises from the observation that the monoclonal antisera failed to detect the respective antigens in M. fascicularis and M. mulatta.  相似文献

Recent advances in taste physiology provide evidence against the traditional “western” notion that there are only four basic tastes. Each substance elicits a singular “signature” on the peripheral taste nerve, but in some cases the signals form separate clusters within the continuum of taste perceptions. We will discuss the taste abilities of nonhuman primates in terms of threshold and above-threshold responses to potential foods. As diets have evolved in species' environments, tastes have responded adaptively in order to maximize energy intake. In turn, food plants have evolved nutrients and toxins in relation to the tasting abilities of consumers. These compounds can be beneficial or harmful in various environments and at different concentrations. This cost-benefit ratio concerns all primates, including Homo sapiens populations living at subsistence level, and must be taken into account, together with psychosensory and sociocultural factors, to understand food choices.  相似文献

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-specific helper T-cell response was studied in human subjects and nonhuman primates either infected with HIV or immunized with different HIV protein preparations. A strong group-specific T-cell response involving T-cell proliferation and lymphokine secretion was observed in immunized chimpanzees and rhesus monkeys as well as HIV-infected chimpanzees and gibbons. HIV-infected people demonstrated a low or no HIV-specific T-cell response. In contrast, five of 14 HIV antibody-negative sexual partners of HIV-infected men recognized one or more T-cell epitopes in the envelope glycoprotein of HIV.  相似文献

Wilms' tumors, or nephroblastomas, are renal embryonal malignancies with a high incidence in humans. Nephroblastomas are uncommon in nonhuman primates. This report describes three cases of spontaneous proliferative renal tumors in young monkeys: two cases of unilateral kidney nephroblastomas in baboons and a nephroblastomatosis in a cynomolgus macaque. Histologically, both baboon tumors were typical of Wilms' tumors found in humans, with proliferative epithelial cells forming tubules and aborted glomeruli, nephrogenic rests and proliferative fibrovascular tissue. The left kidney of the macaque was markedly enlarged and histologically similar to the baboon tumors, although normal kidney architecture was completely effaced by primitive tubules and occasional glomeruli surrounded by edematous stromal tissue. Cytogenetic analysis did not detect any macaque or baboon equivalents to human Wilms' tumor chromosomal abnormalities. By human pathology classification, the diffuse nature of the macaque tumor is more consistent with nephroblastomatosis than nephroblastoma. This differentiation is the first to be reported in a species other than human. The nephroblastomas described here are the first nephroblastomas to be reported in baboons. Our observations indicate that nonhuman primate nephroblastomatosis and nephroblastomas develop in a similar way to Wilms' tumors in humans, although no genetic marker has been associated with nephroblastomas of nonhuman primates thus far.  相似文献

Two strategies for the use of polymorphic biochemical and serological markers in paternity testing problems in non-human primate groups, where pedigree information is incomplete, are discussed. The positive approach, of attempting to prove paternity, is shown to be impracticable given the levels of detectable genetic variation among primates. The more conventional approach of paternity exclusion is examined and found to be useful under certain conditions. This approach is illustrated using the published data on the levels of biochemical and serological variation in Macaca nemestrina.  相似文献

社会玩耍是指两个或两个以上个体共同参与的一种互作性玩耍行为,个体间的行为彼此适应并相互影响。社会玩耍行为在灵长类物种的社会交往过程中普遍发生,作为未成年个体一种重要的发育行为,其对个体的生存技能和成年后的繁殖成功具有重要影响。灵长类物种的社会玩耍不仅仅表现为追逐、摔跤、跳跃等一些常见行为,部分物种还发展出自己特有的行为。一般而言,社会玩耍在婴儿后期和青少年早期的发生频率最高,然后随着年龄增长直到成年时期,这类行为的平均发生频率将逐渐下降。未成年雄性个体要比同年龄段的雌性个体更喜欢玩耍,但常因物种、研究对象年龄等因素表现不同甚至相反;很多物种的个体喜欢与有亲缘关系的个体玩耍,或者与性别相同、年龄相仿、等级相近的个体玩耍。总之,非人灵长类个体社会玩耍的发育不但受环境参量如食物、场地等的影响,而且还与个体的年龄、性别、等级、亲缘关系等社群因素紧密相关。未成年个体在玩耍过程中,获得了身体机能的快速发育、完善了生存技能、建立了个体间的友好关系、增强了认识自身及适应周围环境的能力,从而为顺利过渡到成年期和履行自己的职能打好基础,但有时却需要承担玩耍过程中受伤甚至死亡的风险。玩耍作为灵长类社会的一种行为文化,对其研究有助于对人类自身行为进化的不断认识,相信这方面的理论将会得到后来者的不断创新和丰富,也期望这方面的理念及经验能被及时运用到保护繁育等实践活动中。  相似文献

Until recently, detailed analyses of the architecture of nonhuman primate cancellous bone have not been possible due to a combination of methodological constraints, including poor resolution imaging or destructive protocols. The development of micro-computed tomography (microCT) and morphometric methods associated with this imaging modality offers anthropologists a new means to study the comparative architecture of cancellous bone. Specifically, microCT will allow anthropologists to investigate the relationship between locomotor behavior and trabecular structure. We conducted a preliminary study on the trabecular patterns in the proximal humerus and femur of Hylobates lar, Ateles paniscus, Macaca mulatta, and Papio anubis to investigate the quantitative differences in their trabecular architecture and evaluate the potential of microCT in anthropological inquiry. MicroCT allows the researcher to evaluate variables beyond simple two-dimensional orientations and radiographic densities. For example, this methodology facilitates the study of trabecular thickness and bone volume fraction using three-dimensional data. Results suggest that density-related parameters do not reliably differentiate suspensory-climbing species from quadrupedal species. However, preliminary results indicate that measurements of the degree of anisotropy, a measure of trabecular orientation uniformity, do distinguish suspensory-climbing taxa from more quadrupedal species. The microCT method is an advance over conventional radiography and medical CT because it can accurately resolve micron-sized struts that make up cancellous bone, and from these images a wide array of parameters that have been demonstrated to be related to cancellous bone mechanical properties can be measured. Methodological problems pertinent to any comparative microCT study of primate trabecular architecture are discussed.  相似文献
