Ale? Hrdli?ka's hypothesis on a Neandertal phase of human evolution is examined in light of current data and interpretations on Neandertals. Hrdli?ka's interpretations are related to his ideas regarding the peopling of the New World. A major early statement of Hrdli?ka's views on Neandertal was his Huxley Memorial Lecture of 1927. We assess this formulation and subsequent development of his hypothesis. Hrdli?ka's position is compared with the “presapiens” and “pre-neandertal” hypotheses on the basis of current theory and data. 相似文献

UV absorption data analysis has been used to evaluate equilibrium constants of the pH‐induced interaction of 2,2′‐Bipy with polyadenylnic‐polyuridylic acid in aqueous solution. The conditional probabilities hard model has been adopted in treatment of concentration diagrams calculated by the soft modelling‐based Multivariate Curve Resolution‐Alternating Least Squares approach. Intrinsic binding constant (lgKg = 1.93), and the cooperativity parameter (ω = 340), were calculated as the best fit. The plot of the experimental binding constant versus 2,2′‐Bipy equilibrium concentration shows two modes of ligand with polymer interactions. The equilibrium hard model correctly reproduced the binding constant variations observed in the experiment. The results indicated that ligand binding in two steps is governed by a cooperative process, that is, the enhancement of deprotonated structure stability. It would appear that proposed calculation approach can be used in future combined hard modelling theoretical and soft modelling experimental works. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. During the 1920s and 1930s geneticist L.C. Dunn of Columbia University cautioned Americans against endorsing eugenic policies
and called attention to eugenicists’ less than rigorous practices. Then, from the mid-1940s to early 1950s he attacked scientific
racism and Nazi Rassenhygiene by co-authoring Heredity, Race and Society with Theodosius Dobzhansky and collaborating with members of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural
Organization) on their international campaign against racism. Even though shaking the foundations of scientific discrimination
was Dunn’s primary concern during the interwar and post-World War II years, his campaigns had ancillary consequences for the
discipline. He contributed to the professionalization of genetics during the 1920s and 1930s and sought respectability for
human genetics in the 1940s and 1950s. My article aims to elucidate the activist scientist’s role in undermining scientific
discrimination by exploring aspects of Dunn’s scientific work and political activism from the 1920s to 1950s. Definitions

A flow injection method with chemiluminescence detection is reported for the determination of vitamin A. The method is based on the enhancement effect of vitamin A on chemiluminescence of tris(2,2′‐bipyridyl)Ru(II)–Ce(IV) in acidic medium. The proposed procedure is used to quantitate vitamin A in the range 1.0–100 × 10?6 mol/L with a correlation coefficient of 0.9991 (n = 9) and relative standard deviation in the range 1.2–2.3% (n = 4). The limit of detection (3 × blank) was 8.0 × 10?8 mol/L with a sample throughput of 100/h. The effect of common excipients used in pharmaceutical formulations and some clinically important compounds was also studied. The method was applied to determine vitamin A in pharmaceutical formulations and the results obtained were in reasonable agreement with the amount quoted. The results were compared using spectrophotometric method and no significant difference was found between the results of the two methods at 95% confidence limit. We analyze data on the height and weight of mothers and newborn babies between 1980 and 2005 in St. Petersburg, Russia. We find that women's living standards, as measured by their height, improved steadily from the end of World War II through those born in 1972, hence reached adulthood in 1990. Thereafter, heights declined. Evidence on both the length and weight of babies corroborates this pattern. Their values trace a "U" shaped curve with troughs near the mid-1990s. Thus, the anthropometric results on newborn as well as for their mother point to the strains and challenges to living standards experienced during the restructuring of the post-Soviet economy. This is a general result that has become a recurring pattern: economic transitions are almost always accompanied by biological strains. 相似文献

Development of high‐performance donor–acceptor (D–A) copolymers is vital in the research of polymer solar cells (PSCs). In this work, a low‐bandgap D–A copolymer based on dithieno[3,2‐b:2′,3′‐d]pyridin‐5(4H)‐one unit (DTP), PDTP4TFBT, is developed and used as the donor material for PSCs with PC71BM or ITIC as the acceptor. PDTP4TFBT:PC71BM and PDTP4TFBT:ITIC solar cells give power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) up to 8.75% and 7.58%, respectively. 1,8‐Diiodooctane affects film morphology and device performance for fullerene and nonfullerene solar cells. It inhibits the active materials from forming large domains and improves PCE for PDTP4TFBT:PC71BM cells, while it promotes the aggregation and deteriorates performance for PDTP4TFBT:ITIC cells. The ternary‐blend cells based on PDTP4TFBT:PC71BM:ITIC (1:1.2:0.3) give a decent PCE of 9.20%. 相似文献

During the 20th century, the evolution of the biological standard of living in Colombia was a tropical success story from the point of view of the secular increase in height as well as the reduction of inequality. During the period 1905-1985 the average height of females and males increased by nearly 9 cm on the basis of 9 million records examined from National Identification Cards. We also study the evolution of height of Colombians on the basis of passport records. The elite group of passport holders was much taller than average, and remained stable for the birth cohorts of 1870-1919. In the early 20th century the height of passport recipients was 168.7 cm (men) and 158 cm (women) compared with 162 cm and 150 cm for heights in the national ID cards. The results also show that Colombians experienced significant regional and intrapersonal convergence in height. 相似文献

Diadenosine 5′,5′”-P1,P4-tetraphosphate (Ap4A) cleaving enzymes are assumed to regulate intracellular levels of Ap4A, a compound known to affect cell proliferation and stress responses. From plants an Ap4A hydrolase was recently purified using tomato cells grown in suspension. It was partially sequenced and a peptide antibody was prepared (Feussner et al., 1996). Using this polyclonal monospecific antibody, an abundant nuclear location of Ap4A hydrolase in 4-day-old cells of atomato cell suspension culture is demonstrated here by means of immunocytochemical techniques using FITC (fluorescein-5-isothiocyanate) labeled secondary antibodies. The microscopic analysis of the occurrence of Ap4A hydrolase performed for different stages of the cell cycle visualized by parallel DAPI (4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) staining revealed that the protein accumulates within nuclei of cells in the interphase, but is absent in the nucleus as well as cytoplasm during all stages of mitosis. This first intracellular localization of an Ap4A degrading enzyme within the nucleus and its pattern of appearance during the cell cycle is discussed in relation to the suggested role of Ap4A in triggering DNA synthesis and cell proliferation. 相似文献

Polarized ir spectra of oriented films of α‐helical poly(l ‐alanine) (α‐PLA) have been obtained as a function of residual solvent dichloroacetic acid (DCA). The amide A, B, II, and V regions exhibit multiple bands whose structure depends on the residual DCA content, and those associated with the αI‐PLA structure have been identified. A calculation of the relevant cubic anharmonic force constants indicates that, contrary to previous assignments, the overtone of amide II(A) is in Fermi resonance with the NH stretch fundamental, whose unperturbed frequency we now find to be at 3314 cm−1, significantly higher than the previously suggested 3279 cm−1. Neurotensin(8–13) (NTS(8–13)) analogs with C‐ and/or N‐terminal β‐amino acid residues and three DOTA derivatives thereof have been synthesized (i.e., 1 – 6 ). A virtual docking experiment showed almost perfect fit of one of the 1,4,7,10‐tetraazacyclododecane‐1,4,7,10‐tetraacetic acid (DOTA) derivatives, 6a , into a crystallographically identified receptor NTSR1 (Fig. 1). The affinities for the receptors of the NTS analogs and derivatives are low, when determined with cell‐membrane homogenates, while, with NTSR1‐exhibiting cancer tissues, affinities in the single‐digit nanomolar range can be observed (Table 2). Most of the β‐amino acid‐containing NTS(8–13) analogs (Table 1 and Fig. 2), including the 68Ga complexes of the DOTA‐substituted ones ( 6 ; Figs. 2 and 5), are stable for ca. 1 h in human serum and plasma, and in murine plasma. The biodistributions of two 68Ga complexes (of 6a and 6b ) in HT29 tumor‐bearing nude mice, in the absence and in the presence of a blocking compound, after 10, 30, and 60 min (Figs. 3 and 4) lead to the conclusion that the amount of specifically bound radioligand is rather low. This was confirmed by PET‐imaging experiments with the tumor‐bearing mice (Fig. 6). Comparison of the in vitro plasma stability (after 1 h) with the ex vivo blood content (after 10–15 min) of the two 68Ga complexes shows that they are rapidly cleaved in the animals (Fig. 5). 相似文献

SPARC is a multifunctional glycoprotein that belongs to the matricellular group of proteins. It modulates cellular interaction with the extracellular matrix (ECM) by its binding to structural matrix proteins, such as collagen and vitronectin, and by its abrogation of focal adhesions, features contributing to a counteradhesive effect on cells. SPARC inhibits cellular proliferation by an arrest of cells in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. It also regulates the activity of growth factors, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The expression of SPARC in adult animals is limited largely to remodeling tissue, such as bone, gut mucosa, and healing wounds, and it is prominent in tumors and in disorders associated with fibrosis. The crystal structure of two of the three domains of the protein has revealed a novel follistatin-like module and an extracellular calcium-binding (EC) module containing two EF-hand motifs. The follistatin-like module and the EC module are shared by at least four other proteins that comprise a family of SPARC-related genes. Targeted disruption of the SPARC locus in mice has shown that SPARC is important for lens transparency, as SPARC-null mice develop cataracts shortly after birth. SPARC is a prototypical matricellular protein that functions to regulate cell–matrix interactions and thereby influences many important physiological and pathological processes. 相似文献

Objective: Measurement of salivary IgA antibody (PAc‐peptide antibody, PPA) to amino acid residues 361–386 of Streptococcus mutans PAc, which possess a multiple binding motif to various HLA‐DR molecules and a B‐cell epitope that recognises the inhibiting antibody to S. mutans, is an indicator for the population numbers of mutans streptococci (MS) in human saliva. The purpose of this study was to clarify the role of PPA in infection control of MS after professional oral hygiene care. Materials and methods: Thirty‐nine dependently living institutionalised elderly subjects (75.9 ± 7.5 years; 10 males, 29 females) participated in the study. The measurements of PPA, MS, total streptococci (TS) and lactobacilli (LB) were performed by ELISA and culture techniques from saliva, plaque and tongue samples from the elderly. Results: After treatment using professional oral care, the numbers of MS decreased significantly at 6 months in saliva and tongue samples from the group not having PPA in comparison with the primary data; whereas in the PPA‐detected group, a significant decrease in MS number was shown immediately following professional care at 1–12 months in all samples. There was little difference in the numbers of LB at any of the time points. The numbers of TS decreased rapidly in PPA‐not detected group in comparison with the PPA‐detected group. Conclusion: PPA may be more effective for controlling MS number in the oral cavity after professional treatment. The measurement of PPA may be used for preventive instruction to dental caries at the chair side in the clinical setting. 相似文献

As research progresses toward understanding the role of the amyloid‐β (Aβ) peptide in Alzheimer's disease, certain aspects of the aggregation process for Aβ are still not clear. In particular, the accepted constitution of toxic aggregates in neurons has shifted toward small oligomers. However, the process of forming these oligomers in cells is also not full clear. Even more interestingly, it has been implied that cell membranes, and, in particular, anionic lipids within those membranes, play a key role in the progression of Aβ aggregation, but the exact nature of the Aβ‐membrane interaction in this process is unknown. In this work, we use a thermodynamic cycle and umbrella sampling molecular dynamics to investigate dimerization of the 42‐residue Aβ peptide on model zwitterionic dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) or model anionic dioleoylphosphatidylserine (DOPS) bilayer surfaces. We determined that Aβ dimerization was strongly favored through interactions with the DOPS bilayer. Further, our calculations showed that the DOPS bilayer promoted strong protein–protein interactions within the Aβ dimer, whereas DPPC favored strong protein–lipid interactions. By promoting dimer formation and subsequent dimer release into the solvent, the DOPS bilayer acts as a catalyst in Aβ aggregation. Proteins 2010. © 2010 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. 相似文献

The Tsimane' Amazonian Panel Study (TAPS) is making available the first five years (2002-2006, inclusive) of annual socioeconomic, demographic, and anthropometric data available to the public. The information comes from a foraging-farming society of native Amazonians in Bolivia and includes 13 villages, 332 households, and 1985 people who have been tracked annually since 2002. Dynorphin A, the endogenous agonist for the κ opioid receptor, has been studied by NMR spectroscopy in methanol, acetonitrile, DMSO and in mixtures of hexafluoroacetone/water and DMSO/water. NMR data in the DMSO/water cryomixture at 278 K are consistent with a conformer in which the N‐terminal part, like the corresponding message domain of enkephalins, is poorly ordered, whereas the C‐terminal part is folded in a loop centred around Pro10. The folded structure of the C‐terminal part (address moiety) may shed light on the role of the essential residues Arg7, Lys11 and Lys13.
