Helix-capping motifs are specific patterns of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions found at or near the ends of helices in both proteins and peptides. In an alpha-helix, the first four >N-H groups and last four >C=O groups necessarily lack intrahelical hydrogen bonds. Instead, such groups are often capped by alternative hydrogen bond partners. This review enlarges our earlier hypothesis (Presta LG, Rose GD. 1988. Helix signals in proteins. Science 240:1632-1641) to include hydrophobic capping. A hydrophobic interaction that straddles the helix terminus is always associated with hydrogen-bonded capping. From a global survey among proteins of known structure, seven distinct capping motifs are identified-three at the helix N-terminus and four at the C-terminus. The consensus sequence patterns of these seven motifs, together with results from simple molecular modeling, are used to formulate useful rules of thumb for helix termination. Finally, we examine the role of helix capping as a bridge linking the conformation of secondary structure to supersecondary structure.  相似文献

Patterns of modern human population structure are helpful in understanding the history of human migration and admixture. We conducted a study on genetic structure of the Malay population in Malaysia, using 54,794 genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism genotype data generated in four Malay sub-ethnic groups in peninsular Malaysia (Melayu Kelantan, Melayu Minang, Melayu Jawa and Melayu Bugis). To the best of our knowledge this is the first study conducted on these four Malay sub-ethnic groups and the analysis of genotype data of these four groups were compiled together with 11 other populations' genotype data from Indonesia, China, India, Africa and indigenous populations in Peninsular Malaysia obtained from the Pan-Asian SNP database. The phylogeny of populations showed that all of the four Malay sub-ethnic groups are separated into at least three different clusters. The Melayu Jawa, Melayu Bugis and Melayu Minang have a very close genetic relationship with Indonesian populations indicating a common ancestral history, while the Melayu Kelantan formed a distinct group on the tree indicating that they are genetically different from the other Malay sub-ethnic groups. We have detected genetic structuring among the Malay populations and this could possibly be accounted for by their different historical origins. Our results provide information of the genetic differentiation between these populations and a valuable insight into the origins of the Malay sub-ethnic groups in Peninsular Malaysia.  相似文献

Fisheries acoustic instruments provide information on four major groups in aquatic ecosystems: fish with and without swim bladder (tertiary and quaternary consumers), fluidlike zooplankton (secondary consumers) and small gas bearing organisms such as larval fish and phytoplankton (predominantly primary producers). We entertain that this information is useable to describe the spatial structure of organism groups in pelagic ecosystems. The proposal we make is based on a multi-frequency indicator that synthesises in a single metric the shape of the acoustic frequency response of different organism groups, i.e. the dependence of received acoustic backscattered energy on emitting echosounder frequency. We demonstrate the development and interpretation of the multi-frequency indicator using simulated data. We then calculate the indicator for acoustic water-column survey data from the Bay of Biscay and use it to create reference maps for the spatial structure of the four scattering groups as well as their small scale spatial variability. These maps provide baselines for monitoring future changes in the structure of the pelagic ecosystem.  相似文献

采用SRAP标记法对183份茄子(Solanum melongena)种质资源的遗传关系和群体结构进行分析。结果表明, 33对多态性SRAP引物组合共扩增出215条清晰稳定的多态性条带, 平均每对引物组合产生7条多态性条带。183份茄子种质的遗传相似系数介于0.276-0.813之间, 平均值为0.623, 表明茄子种质资源间遗传背景存在一定的差异。在遗传距离为0.345 6处可将183份茄子种质分为4组。通过群体结构分析可将种质划分为4个群体, 不同群体间的界限十分明显, 且群体间的基因渗透较高。  相似文献

We compared the organization of dawn choruses in five groups of Japanese quail, Coturnix coturnix japonica, males (four groups of kin-related males and one group of unrelated males). We documented the structure of chorus groups: one male sang much more than the others during the dawn peak in four of the five groups, and this regardless of the number of males in the group. The dominant singers were then removed from two similar-sized groups, one of kin-related (K3) and the other of unrelated (NK) males. The quantity of song emitted by the remaining NK males was modified, but not that emitted by the K3 males.  相似文献

Within a study of the genetics of Balkan populations, four DNA-STR systems and 19 classical markers were examined in seven samples: Romanians (two groups), Albanians, Greeks and Aromuns (three groups). The results for the DNA-STR systems have been compared with data from the literature. The results show four clear separated groups: sub-Saharan black populations, North-African, Japanese and European populations. The large Balkan populations, except the Greek sample, are genetically more homogenous than the Aromun populations. A second Neighbor-joining tree based on all 23 analyzed systems, show a particular trend of the Aromun groups, which indicates a particular genetic structure.  相似文献

We examined the genetic structure and phylogenetic relationships of some Chinese populations from the Chang Jiang (=Yangtze) drainage of the cyprinid Zacco platypus. We sequenced the complete mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of 64 individuals from 6 upper and middle tributaries of the Sichuan and Hunan Provinces to assess their population structure and systematics. The combined analyses of the phylogenetic information and the population structure suggested that Chinese Z. platypus consist of four distinct mtDNA lineages which exhibit high genetic variation and haplotypic diversity (Zacco A-D). The high molecular divergence observed among Zacco A-D mtDNA lineages (TrN+I (0.76) distance, mean 8.9%+/-1.7%) and their phylogeographic structure indicate that all four lineages have evolved independently. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicates that most of the genetic variation observed is found among the four Zacco mtDNA lineages (thetaCT = 0.94) suggesting restricted gene flow among the Chang Jiang populations. Long-term interruption of gene flow was also evidenced by thetaST values higher than 0.9 that could be favoured by the discontinuous distributions of the lineages inhabiting upper (Sichuan Province) and middle (Hunan Province) Chang Jiang tributaries. The significant correlation between the geographic and genetic distances provide support for the importance of geographic discontinuity in shaping the Zacco genetic structure. Nested clade analysis (NCA) results were congruent with phylogenetic relationships recovered and confirm the genetic distinctiveness of four independent Zacco groups. These four groups correspond to the four Zacco A-D mtDNA lineages recovered in the phylogeny and were defined by nucleotide synapomorphies permitting bootstrapped and Bayesian confidence of 95% or greater. The high level of mitochondrial sequence divergence separating all Zacco mtDNA lineages suggested that the Z. platypus populations from the Chang Jiang drainage probably correspond to four different species.  相似文献

鸟类消化系统的形态结构与能量摄入密切相关.本文以相同环境中进食量充足的树麻雀(Passer montanus)为对照组,与4种处于相同饥饿环境但不同饥饿天数(1D、3D、5D、7D组)树麻雀的各消化器官的长度及重量进行比较.结果显示,饥饿驯化各组树麻雀的体重和体脂含量均低于对照组;1D组树麻雀的消化器官胃、小肠、直肠长度显著增长,重量显著增加;3D、5D、7D组各消化器官的长度和重量表现出波动的变化趋势,摄食量的限制是胃干重没有发生显著变化的原因.结论是,摄能需求的不同引起树麻雀消化器官长度和重量发生显著变化,这种变化可对摄食量及消化吸收率产生直接的影响,同时这种适应性变化应当是快速、可逆和可重复的,是消化器官形态结构与功能能力及器官自身能耗之间能量预算的结果,也是个体与环境及适合度之间能量预算的结果.  相似文献

1. Stream communities are structured by factors acting over multiple spatial and temporal scales. Identifying what factors are driving spatial patterns in stream communities is a central aim of ecology.
2. Here we used two large European data sets of fish, invertebrates, macrophytes, benthic diatoms and environmental data in two stream groups (lowland and mountain) to determine the importance of variables at different spatial scales (geographical, regional, local) on community structure.
3. Both geographical position and ecoregion were selected first in canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), clearly showing the broad spatial gradients covered in the data set. Secondary predictors (after accounting for spatial and/or ecoregion effects) were similar between stream groups and among the four organism groups. In particular, conductivity and N concentration were strong predictors reflecting catchment land use.
4. Using partial CCA, we assessed the individual importance of the three spatial scales on the community structure of the four organism groups in the two stream groups. The majority of among-site variability (22–29%) was accounted for by local scale variables (e.g. water chemistry and substratum type), with regional and spatial variables accounting 11–13% and 5–6%, respectively. Our findings indicate that the four organism groups are responding similarly to the different levels of spatial scale, implying much redundancy which should be consider when implementing studies of bioassessment.  相似文献

The new bifunctional reagent, N-(4-chloromercuriphenyl)-4-chloro-3,5-dinitrobenzamide (I) was used to investigate the quaternary structure of yeast alcohol dehydrogenase. The four essential - SH groups of the enzyme were substituted by the mercuriphenyl moiety of compound I in the course of the reaction of one mole of protein with four moles of the reagent (one molecule of compound I incorporated by yeast alcohol dehydrogenase monomer). In a second step only two of the four chlorodinitrophenyl fragments bound to the protein established intermonomeric cross-links with non-essential - NH2 groups. The resulting dimers could be re-dissociated with mercaptoethanol. This result suggests that the four protomers of the enzyme could be arranged as a dimer of dimers.  相似文献

We conducted a comprehensive allozymic analysis of 393 specimens of the Japanese clawed salamander, Onychodactylus japonicus, from 33 populations of northeastern Honshu, Japan. As a result, these populations exhibited extensive geographic genetic differentiation, and four major genetic groups (N-Tohoku, S-Tohoku, Tsukuba, and SW-Honshu groups) were consistently recognized. Of these, the Tsukuba group was geographically isolated from all the others, whereas the N- and S-Tohoku groups, and the S-Tohoku and SW-Honshu groups, respectively, were nearly parapatric, without distinct geographic barriers. The magnitude of genetic distances between the four groups, except for between the N- and S-Tohoku groups, was as large as that normally found among different hynobiid species. A structure analysis detected no admixture of the N- and S-Tohoku groups, whereas few hybrids were found between the S-Tohoku and SW-Honshu around their contact zone. However, genetic exchange between these parapatric groups appeared to be infrequent, suggesting the presence of some isolation mechanisms between them. Within each group, only the S-Tohoku group exhibited an extensive level of population genetic structure that roughly distinguishes the eastern, central, and northwestern subgroups, indicating the complexity of the phylogeographic traits of this group. These results strongly suggest that populations of O. japonicus from northeastern Japan encompass several cryptic species.  相似文献

Temporal variation in foraging group structure of a fish assemblage was examined in a flood-prone stream in southern Hokkaido, Japan. Foraging behaviour was observed underwater for four species which inhabit the water column: ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, white-spotted charr, Salvelinus leucomaenis, masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou, and Japanese dace, Tribolodon hakonensis, with each species being categorized into five size classes (species-size group; SSG). Based on foraging behaviour, each SSG of the fish assemblage was classified into one of four foraging groups: algae grazers, drift foragers, benthos-drift foragers, and omnivores, defined as SSG exhibiting similar foraging behaviour. All size classes of ayu, and of charr and salmon were categorized as algae grazers and drift foragers, respectively, throughout the study period. In contrast, size classes of dace were categorized as drift foragers, benthos-drift foragers, or omnivores with the same size classes often assigned to different foraging groups from month to month. Digestive tract contents of the fishes in the four foraging groups reflected their observed foraging behaviour, and foraging groups were therefore regarded as representing trophic groups. Abundance and membership of each foraging group varied in accordance with changes in abundance of SSG due to their growth, immigration, emigration, and/or mortality. Moreover, due to numerical dominance within the assemblage, plasticity in foraging behaviour of small- and medium-sized dace also played a key role in determining variability in the foraging group structure. Relative frequencies of two types of foraging behaviour, algae nipping and benthos foraging, of the small-sized dace were significantly correlated with the level of each resource, whereas no significant relationship was detected between foraging frequencies of the medium-sized dace and either resource. Fluctuations in foraging group structure within this assemblage occurred through niche shifts of some component members and by changes in SSG composition.  相似文献

Summary In order to analyze the evolutionary behavior of the cobra venom cytotoxins, their probable tertiary structure was predicted using computer graphics. The 41 amino acid sequences known show that the major evolutionary changes have taken place in two particularly exposed areas of the molecular surface. In each area, neighboring residue positions seem to have evolved interdependently, but there is no obvious interdependence between the two areas. Indeed, the relative evolution of these two areas prompts a subdivision of the sequence set into four groups. According to the known cytotoxin circular dichroism spectra, one of these four groups could be characterized by a difference in molecular secondary structure. Sine the two variable areas have functional associations, it is suggested that their evolution may be governed by a target with several similar binding sites.  相似文献

The European wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) lives in stable, territorial breeding groups, with male-biased natal dispersal, female philopatry, and a polygynous mating system. It was introduced into Britain in the 11 th century and kept in captive warrens as a food and fur resource. Populations expanded in the wild in the 18th century. Microsatellite markers were employed to examine the genetic structure of wild rabbit populations on three spatial scales: macrogeographic structure of 17 populations in East Anglia, microgeographic structure of a tagged population in the grounds of the University of East Anglia over four consecutive years, and pairwise kinships and individual movement within this tagged population. Populations across East Anglia were found to be genetically distinct, and heterozygote deficits were observed at all loci indicating sub-division within sampled populations. Analysis of the tagged population confirmed that rabbit populations are genetically sub-divided among social groups. Studying this population over four consecutive years revealed that as the population size increased, the number of social groups increased. Analysis of individual pairwise relatedness of females indicated that individuals did not necessarily group with kin, and behavioural data indicate that an optimum group size may exist which maximizes reproductive success.  相似文献

A single crystal of a coordinated complex of neutral erythritol (C4H10O4,E) with a neodymium ion, NdE(II), was synthesized and studied using FT-IR and X-ray diffraction analysis. In NdE(II) (NdCl3.2.5C4H10O4.C2H5OH) the Nd3+ coordinates with one chloride ion and eight OH groups from three erythritol molecules. There are two neodymium centers linked by one erythritol molecule with same coordination structure in the molecule. Two erythritol molecules provide 1,3,4-hydroxyl groups to coordinate with a neodymium ion; another erythritol molecule coordinates to two Nd ions via its 1,2-hydroxyl groups and 3,4-hydroxyl groups, respectively. The OH groups of erythritol act as ligand to coordinate to neodymium ions, and OH groups of erythritol form hydrogen bond networks that link chain and layer together to build three-dimensional structures. The ratio of metal to ligand is 1:2.5. The structure of NdE(II) is more complicated than the previously reported NdE(I), which is NdCl3.C4H10O4.6H2O; in NdE(I), Nd3+ is coordinated to four hydroxyl groups from two erythritol molecules, four water molecules and one chloride ion. The results indicate the complexity of metal-sugar interaction.  相似文献

1. The iodination of insulin was studied under various experimental conditions in aqueous media and in some organic solvents, by measuring separately the uptake of iodine by the four tyrosyl groups and the relative amounts of monoiodotyrosine and di-iodotyrosine that are formed. In aqueous media from pH1 to pH9 the iodination occurs predominantly on the tyrosyl groups of the A chain. Some organic solvents increase the iodine uptake of the B-chain tyrosyl groups. Their efficacy in promoting iodination of Tyr-B-16 and Tyr-B-26 is in the order: ethylene glycol and propylene glycol approximately methanol and ethanol>dioxan>8m-urea. 2. It is suggested that each of the four tyrosyl groups in insulin has a different environment: Tyr-A-14 is fully exposed to the solvent; Tyr-A-19 is sterically influenced by the environmental structure, possibly by the vicinity of a disulphide interchain bond; Tyr-B-16 is embedded into a non-polar area whose stability is virtually independent of the molecular conformation; Tyr-B-26 is probably in a situation similar to Tyr-B-16 with the difference that its non-polar environment depends on the preservation of the native structure.  相似文献

The interpretation of structure from motion is examined from a computional point of view. The question addressed is how the three dimensional structure and motion of objects can be inferred from the two dimensional transformations of their projected images when no three dimensional information is conveyed by the individual projections. The following scheme is proposed: (i) divide the image into groups of four elements each; (ii) test each group for a rigid interpretation; (iii) combine the results obtained in (ii). It is shown that this scheme will correctly decompose scenes containing arbitrary rigid objects in motion, recovering their three dimensional structure and motion. The analysis is based primarily on the "structure from motion" theorem which states that the structure of four non-coplanar points is recoverable from three orthographic projections. The interpretation scheme is extended to cover perspective projections, and its psychological relevance is discussed.  相似文献

The gobiid fish, Trimma caudomaculatum, lives in groups. We investigated group structure, mating system and bidirectional sex change of this species. Four groups examined contained more than two males. The males were significantly larger than the females. By the observations in aquarium, the males occupied a nest and the females visited the nest for spawning. While there was no specific pair bond, the males mated with multiple females. Hence, this species establishes multi-male groups. In the experiments, four larger females had changed sex to male among 25 females. The smallest male changed to female in the group of four males.  相似文献

The lysine residues were modified to varying degrees (50-91%) with citraconic anhydride to determine the extent of conformational change in ovalbumin. Major findings included: 1. Sixteen of the 20 lysine residues are located on the protein surface, while the remaining four are buried. 2. The tertiary structure changed progressively with the degree of modification. 3. However, the secondary structure was disrupted only after one or more of the four buried lysines had been citraconylated. 4. Although the secondary structure was unaltered, the alpha-helix was nevertheless progressively destabilized as the surface 16 lysine residues were modified. This destabilization was due to electrostatic repulsions introduced by the entering citraconyl groups.  相似文献

[背景] 人体能量稳态失衡表现为体重过轻、超重和肥胖,肠道菌群与人体能量稳态的维持有关,但不同身体质量指数(Body Mass Index,BMI)人群的肠道菌群特征仍需进一步探究。[目的] 基于美国肠道计划公开数据库,解析4类BMI人群肠道菌群的特征,并探究4类BMI人群肠道菌群共存网络特征及差异,为基于肠道菌群来干预肥胖及体重过轻等不健康状态提供新的理论依据。[方法] 从美国肠道计划数据集中筛选具有BMI信息的肠道菌群样本,并根据世界卫生组织规定的BMI划分标准将筛选后的样本分为4类:体重过轻(BMI<18.5 kg/m2),正常体重(18.5 kg/m22),超重(25 kg/m22),肥胖(BMI>30 kg/m2);通过计算和比较肠道菌群的α多样性和β多样性探究4类BMI人群肠道菌群的整体结构特征及差异;通过多元线性回归模型对不同BMI分类与肠道菌群进行相关性分析,并且将地域、年龄、性别因素作为混杂因素加入到模型中进行校正;采用SparCC分别计算4类BMI人群肠道菌群中菌属相关性,并分别构建肠道菌群共存网络。[结果] 经过Wilcoxon秩和检验,发现体重过轻、超重、肥胖人群的肠道菌群α多样性都显著低于正常体重人群;β多样性分析结果表明4类BMI人群肠道菌群的整体结构存在显著差异;4类BMI人群肠道中厚壁菌门(Firmicutes)和拟杆菌门(Bacteroidetes)的相对含量无显著差异;通过MaAsLin分析,并且将地域、年龄、性别因素作为混杂因素加入到模型中进行校正,共得到49个与BMI类型显著相关的物种;4类BMI人群肠道菌群共存网络的拓扑结构具有一定差异,体重过轻和正常体重人群肠道菌群共存网络的复杂度较高,超重和肥胖人群肠道菌群共存网络的复杂度较低。[结论] 4类BMI人群肠道菌群的多样性、整体结构和共存网络间均存在差异。  相似文献
