Simultaneous measurements were made of the electrocardiogram (ECG) and the intraarterial blood pressure of adult male Macaca monkeys during acute exposures to homogeneous stationary magnetic fields ranging in strength up to 1.5 tesla. An instantaneous, field strength-dependent increase in the ECG signal amplitude at the locus of the T wave was observed in fields greater than 0.1 tesla. The temporal sequence of this signal in the ECG record and its reversibility following termination of the magnetic field exposure are consistent with an earlier suggestion that it arises from a magnetically induced aortic blood flow potential superimposed on the native T-wave signal. No measurable alterations in blood pressure resulted from exposure to fields up to 1.5 tesla. This experimental finding is in agreement with theoretical calculations of the magnetohydrodynamic effect on blood flow in the major arteries of the cardiovascular system.  相似文献

Rectal temperatures were recorded in mice and rats during exposure to a stationary 7.55 Tesla (1 T = 10(4) Gauss) homogeneous magnetic field, and to magnetic field gradients ranging from 58.1 - 58.6 T/m. Contrary to observations reported recently by other investigators, no evidence was found for a change in the body temperature of rodents exposed to strong homogeneous or gradient magnetic fields.  相似文献

Magnetically induced electric fields and currents in the circulatory system   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Blood flow in an applied magnetic field gives rise to induced voltages in the aorta and other major arteries of the central circulatory system that can be observed as superimposed electrical signals in the electrocardiogram (ECG). The largest magnetically induced voltage occurs during pulsatile blood flow into the aorta, and results in an increased signal at the location of the T-wave in the ECG. Studies involving the measurement of blood pressure, blood flow rate, heart sounds, and cardiac valve displacements have been conducted with monkeys and dogs exposed to static fields up to 1.5 tesla (T) under conditions producing maximum induced voltages in the aorta. Results of these studies gave no indication of alterations in cardiac functions or hemodynamic parameters. Cardiac activity monitored by ECG biotelemetry during continuous exposure of rats to a 1.5-T field for 10 days gave no evidence for any significant changes relative to the 10 days prior to and following exposure. Theoretical modeling of magnetic field interactions with blood flow has included a complete solution of the equation describing the flow of an electrically conductive fluid in the presence of a magnetic field (the Navier–Stokes equation) using the finite element technique. Magnetically induced voltages and current densities as a function of the applied magnetic field strength have been calculated for the aorta and surrounding tissues structures, including the sinoatrial node. Induced current densities in the region of the sinoatrial node are predicted to be >100 mA/m2 at field levels >5 T in an adult human under conditions of maximum electrodynamic coupling with aortic blood flow. Magnetohydrodynamic interactions are predicted to reduce the volume flow rate of blood in the human aorta by a maximum of 1.3%, 4.9%, and 10.4% at field levels of 5, 10, and 15 T, respectively.  相似文献

The bioelectric properties of frog sciatic nerves have been measured during exposure to homogeneous, stationary magnetic fields. The action potential amplitude, conduction velocity, absolute refractory period and relative refractory period were found to be unaffected by a continuous 4-h exposure to perpendicular or parallel 2.0 T (1 T equal 10(4) G) magnetic fields. These parameters also remained unchanged during a 1-h post-exposure period. The conduction velocity was similarly found to be unchanged when the field was applied continuously for 17 h. Exposure of sciatic nerves to a 1.0-T field led to no alteration in the threshold for neural excitation. The absence of magnetic field effects on nerve electrical activity observed in the present experiments contrasts with the positive findings reported previously by other investigators. These discrepancies may be attributable to an inadequate control of ambient temperature in the earlier studies.  相似文献

The effect of the exposure of maize seeds to stationary magnetic fields on germination and early growth has been studied under laboratory conditions. Seeds were magnetically exposed to one of two magnetic field strengths, 125 or 250 mT for different periods of time. Mean germination time and the time required to obtain 10, 25, 50, 75 and 90% of seeds to germinate were calculated. The results showed a reduction of these parameters for most of magnetic treatments, therefore their rate of germination was increased.Growth data measured on the 7th and 10th day after seeding allowed us to corroborate the effect observed in germination tests. Treated plants grew higher and heavier than control; on the 10th day total length was greater than control plants exposed to stationary magnetic field, corresponding with increase of the total fresh weight. The greatest increases were obtained for plants continuously exposed to 125 or 250 mT.  相似文献

In this work the effect of sinusoidal 50 Hz, 0.2 mT magnetic fields on the red blood cells (RBCs) and heart functions of Albino rats were investigated. Twenty-four male Albino rats were equally divided into four groups, A, B, C, and D. Animals from groups B were continuously exposed to the magnetic field for 15 days; and groups C and D, for 30 days. Group A was used as control. Animals from group D were kept after exposure to the magnetic field for a period of 45 days for delayed effect studies. The osmotic fragility and shape of RBCs' membrane and hemoglobin (Hb) structure tests were carried out for all groups. The dielectric relaxation of Hb molecules was measured in the frequency range of 0.1-10 MHz and the dielectric increment (Deltaepsilon), relaxation time (tau), molecular radius (r), and Cole-Cole parameter (alpha) were calculated for all groups. The ECG was measured for all animals before and after exposure to the magnetic field. The results indicated that exposure of the animals to 50 Hz, 0.2 mT magnetic fields resulted in the decrease of RBCs membrane elasticity and permeability and changes in the molecular structure of Hb. The ECG of the exposed animals was considerably altered. The data also indicated that there was no sign of repair in the newly generated RBCs structure and the ECG after removing the animals from the magnetic field, which indicates that the blood generating system was severely injured. The injuries in the heart of the animals were attributed to the loss of some physiological functions of the RBCs as a result of exposures of the rats to the magnetic field.  相似文献

60 Hz magnetic field exposure induces DNA crosslinks in rat brain cells   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
In previous research, we found an increase in DNA strand breaks in brain cells of rats acutely exposed to a 60 Hz magnetic field (for 2 h at an intensity of 0.5 mT). DNA strand breaks were measured with a microgel electrophoresis assay using the length of DNA migration as an index. In the present experiment, we found that most of the magnetic field-induced increase in DNA migration was observed only after proteinase-K treatment, suggesting that the field caused DNA-protein crosslinks. In addition, when brain cells from control rats were exposed to X-rays, an increase in DNA migration was observed, the extent of which was independent of proteinase-K treatment. However, the X-ray-induced increase in DNA migration was retarded in cells from animals exposed to magnetic fields even after proteinase-K treatment, suggesting that DNA-DNA crosslinks were also induced by the magnetic field. The effects of magnetic fields were also compared with those of a known DNA crosslink-inducing agent mitomycin C. The pattern of effects is similar between the two agents. These data suggest that both DNA-protein and DNA-DNA crosslinks are formed in brain cells of rats after acute exposure to a 60 Hz magnetic field.  相似文献

Acute (2 h) exposure of rats to a 60 Hz magnetic field (flux densities 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 mT) caused a dose-dependent increase in DNA strand breaks in brain cells of the animals (assayed by a microgel electrophoresis method at 4 h postexposure). An increase in single-strand DNA breaks was observed after exposure to magnetic fields of 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 mT, whereas an increase in double-strand DNA breaks was observed at 0.25 and 0.5 mT. Because DNA strand breaks may affect cellular functions, lead to carcinogenesis and cell death, and be related to onset of neurodegenerative diseases, our data may have important implications for the possible health effects of exposure to 60 Hz magnetic fields. The propagation of a nonlinear right-hand polarized wave along an external magnetic field in subcritical plasma in the electron cyclotron resonance region is studied using numerical simulations. It is shown that a small-amplitude plasma wave excited in low-density plasma is unstable against modulation instability with a modulation period equal to the wavelength of the excited wave. The modulation amplitude in this case increases with decreasing detuning from the resonance frequency. The simulations have shown that, for large-amplitude waves of the laser frequency range propagating in plasma in a superstrong magnetic field, the maximum amplitude of the excited longitudinal electric field increases with the increasing external magnetic field and can reach 30% of the initial amplitude of the electric field in the laser wave. In this case, the energy of plasma electrons begins to substantially increase already at magnetic fields significantly lower than the resonance value. The laser energy transferred to plasma electrons in a strong external magnetic field is found to increase severalfold compared to that in isotropic plasma. It is shown that this mechanism of laser radiation absorption depends only slightly on the electron temperature.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate the influence on ultrastructure and function of endocrine and excretoric part of pancreas in rats of extremely low frequency alternating magnetic fields with parameters used in therapy in humans. The animals from the two experimental groups were exposed to a rectangular magnetic field waveform at a frequency of 10 Hz and induction of 1.8-3.8 mT--(group P) or a sinusoidal magnetic field at a frequency of 40 Hz and induction of 1.3-2.7 mT--(group S), respectively. The control rats were subjected to sham exposure. The cycle of 1, 3, 6, 9, and 14 daily exposure sessions lasting 30 min was made in all groups. Some of rats after finishing the cycle of 14 exposures were left in the same conditions except for the magnetic field for 3 or 10 days. In both groups of rats exposed to magnetic field, a distinct tendency to decrease glucose concentration, compared to control group, was observed during the exposure cycle. Serum glucose became normal after the end of exposure sessions. The concentrations of insulin in both groups of rats exposed to magnetic field were significantly higher, compared to the controls, during the exposure cycle. After the end of exposure cycle the concentration of insulin in group S became normal. In contrast, in group P the concentration of insulin decreased significantly on the last day of exposure, with a subsequent increase in the following days. The activity of alpha-amylase and lipase in the serum of experimental and control rats was not affected. In both groups of exposed rats, reversible changes of ultrastructure of the pancreatic islets, including expansion of the Golgi apparatus, extension of rough endoplasmatic reticulum, mitochondrial swelling, expansion of beta-granules and increase in number of empty vesicles in beta cells, occurred during the exposure. In acinar cells of exposed animals, a slight extension of rough endoplasmatic reticulum and mitochondrial swelling as transitory changes were observed. The structural and functional changes in pancreas are probably adaptative ones.  相似文献

The effect of extremely weak alternating magnetic fields of various types with the amplitudes δ of 2 μT on the heart rate variability in humans was studied. Volunteers were placed in a large-volume coil system (2ω2ω2 m), which provided exposure of the whole body to extremely weak alternating magnetic fields uniform in their amplitude. It was shown for the first time that the exposure to such fields could both increase and decrease the magnitude of stress in humans. In particular, the field tuned to the nuclear spins of hydrogen atoms (amplitude, 1.6 μT and frequency, 76 Hz) decreased the Baevsky stress index, whereas the field tuned to the magnetic moments formed by the orbiting electrons in some atoms (amplitude, 0.192 μT and frequency, 3000 Hz) increased this index. These results provide a possible explanation for the mechanisms of adverse effects caused by extremely weak alternating magnetic fields of certain types of both technogenic and natural origins on the human cardiovascular system.  相似文献

This study examined electrocardiogram (ECG) waveform, heart rate (HR), mean blood pressure (BP), and HR variability as potential autonomic signatures of hypothermia and rewarming. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats had telemetry transmitters surgically implanted, and 2 weeks were allowed for recovery prior to induction of hypothermia. Rats were lightly anesthetized (sodium pentobarbital, 35 mg/kg i.p.) and placed in a coil of copper tubing through which temperature-controlled water was circulated. Animals were cooled to a core temperature (Tc) of 20 degrees C, maintained there for 30 min, and then rewarmed. Data (Tc, BP, HR from ECG, and 10-s strips of ECG waveforms) were collected every 5 min throughout hypothermia and rewarming. Both HR and BP declined after initial increases with the drop in HR starting at a higher Tc than the drop in BP (29.6 +/- 2.4 degrees C vs. 27.1 +/- 3.3 degrees C, p < 0.05). Animals that were not successfully rewarmed exhibited a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the normalized standard deviation of interbeat intervals (IBI) throughout cooling compared with animals that were successfully rewarmed. The T wave of the ECG increased in amplitude and area with decreasing Tc. T-wave amplitude and IBI variability show potential as predictors of survival in hypothermic victims.  相似文献

Proposals to enhance the amount of radiation dose delivered to small tumors with radioimmunotherapy by constraining emitted electrons with very strong homogeneous static magnetic fields has renewed interest in the cellular effects of prolonged exposures to such fields. Past investigations have not studied the effects on tumor cell growth of lengthy exposures to very high magnetic fields. Three malignant human cell lines, HTB 63 (melanoma), HTB 77 IP3 (ovarian carcinoma), and CCL 86 (lymphoma; Raji cells), were exposed to a 7 Tesla uniform static magnetic field for 64 hours. Following exposure, the number of viable cells in each group was determined. In addition, multicycle flow cytometry was performed on all cell lines, and pulsed-field electrophoresis was performed solely on Raji cells to investigate changes in cell cycle patterns and the possibility of DNA fragmentation induced by the magnetic field. A 64 h exposure to the magnetic field produced a reduction in viable cell number in each of the three cell lines. Reductions of 19.04 ± 7.32%, 22.06 ± 6.19%, and 40.68 ± 8.31% were measured for the melanoma, ovarian carcinoma, and lymphoma cell lines, respectively, vs. control groups not exposed to the magnetic field. Multicycle flow cytometry revealed that the cell cycle was largely unaltered. Pulsed-field electrophoresis analysis revealed no increase in DNA breaks related to magnetic field exposure. In conclusion, prolonged exposure to a very strong magnetic field appeared to inhibit the growth of three human tumor cell lines in vitro. The mechanism underlying this effect has not, as yet, been identified, although alteration of cell growth cycle and gross fragmentation of DNA have been excluded as possible contributory factors. Future investigations of this phenomenon may have a significant impact on the future understanding and treatment of cancer. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

An hour-long exposure of peritoneal neutrophils of mice to a combination of a weak constant magnetic field (42 μT) and low-frequency alternating magnetic fields collinear to the weak constant magnetic field (frequencies 1, 4.4, and 16.5 Hz, total amplitude 0.86 μT) at physiological temperatures promoted a significant increase in chemiluminescence of cells in response to subsequent exposure to low concentrations of respiratory burst activators (formylated peptide N-formyl-Met–Leu–Phe or phorbol ester phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate) in the presence of luminol. The response of human neutrophils isolated from peripheral blood to the pretreatment with combined magnetic fields followed by exposure to the activator N-formyl-Met–Leu–Phe was similar to the response of mouse neutrophils.  相似文献

Previous assays with weak sinusoidal magnetic fields (SMF) have shown that bacteria that had been exposed to a 50 Hz magnetic field (0.1–1 mT) gave colonies with significantly lower transposition activity as compared to sham-exposed bacteria. These experiments have now been extended by using a pulsed-square wave magnetic field (PMF) and, unexpectedly, it was found that bacteria exposed to PMF showed a higher transposition activity compared to the controls. The increase of the transposition activity was positively correlated with the intensity of the magnetic fields (linear dose-effect relation). This phenomenon was not affected by any bacterial cell proliferation, since no significant difference was observed in number and size of PMF-exposed and sham-exposed colonies. In addition, the cell viability of E. coli was significantly higher than that of the controls when exposed to SMF, and lower than that of the controls when exposed to PMF. Under our experimental conditions it was shown that exposure to PMF stimulates the transposition activity and reduces cell viability of bacteria, whereas exposure to SMF reduces the transposition mobility and enhances cell viability. These results suggest that the biological effects of magnetic fields may critically depend on the physical characteristics of the magnetic signal, in particular the wave shape.  相似文献

This investigation studied the effect of 50 Hz electric and magnetic fields on the human heart. The electrocardiograms of 27 transmission-line workers and 26 male volunteers were recorded with a Holter recorder both in and outside the fields. The measurements took from half an hour to a few hours. The electric field strength varied from 0.14 to 10.21 kV/m and the magnetic flux density from 1.02 to 15.43 μT. Analysis of the ECG recordings showed that extrasystoles or arrhythmias were as frequent outside the field as in the field. In some cases a small decrease in heart rate was observed after field exposure. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to investigate the possible effect of 60 Hz magnetic fields as promoters of brain tumors initiated transplacentally by ethylnitrosourea (ENU) in F344 rats. One hundred twenty mated animals were divided into six different groups and exposed in utero on day 18 of gestation to a single intravenous dose of either Saline (vehicle control, Group I), or ENU 10 mg/kg (Groups II-VI). In the present study, a total of 480 offspring was used. The offspring in group II were given no further treatment while the offspring in Groups III-VI were exposed to four different intensities of magnetic fields. Animals received exposure to 60 Hz magnetic field at field strengths of 0 Tesla (sham control, T1, Group III), 5 muT (T2, Group IV), 83.3 muT (T3, Group V), or 500 muT (T4, Group VI), for 21 h/day from the age of 4 weeks to the age of 32 or 42 weeks. At histopathological examination, tumors of the nervous system were seen in all the ENU-treated groups. The tumor incidence of the ENU group at 32nd and 42nd week necropsy was higher than that of the vehicle control group. The incidence of glial tumors at 42nd week necropsy was higher than the 32nd week necropsy. However, there were no differences in the tumor incidence between the sham control (T1) and ENU + magnetic field exposure groups (T2-T4). In conclusion, there was no evidence that exposure of offspring to 60 Hz at magnetic field strengths up to 500 muT to the age of 32 or 42 weeks promoted ENU-initiated brain tumors in rats.

While investigating the effects of weak complex magnetic fields upon neuroplasticity following induction of early epilepsy, an unprecedented increase in post-seizure mortality (76%) was observed for young rats that had been exposed perinatally to 7 Hz magnetic fields with maximum intensities around 5 nT. Pups exposed to less intense or more intense fields of this frequency did not display this magnitude of significant mortality. Perinatal exposure through the maternal water supply to either a putative nitric oxide donor or inhibitor did not affect this mortality. The non-linear relationship between perinatal 7 Hz magnetic field intensity and post-seizure mortality may be considered analogous to the non-linear relationship between the molarity of ligands and their sequestering to receptor subtypes. These unexpected results suggest that exposure to apparently innocuous stimuli during early development may affect vulnerability to stimuli presented later in ontogeny.  相似文献
