Summary In Locusta migratoria and Schistocerca gregaria, the projection areas and branching patterns of the tympanal receptor cells in the thoracic ganglia were revealed. Four auditory neuropiles can be distinguished on each side of the ventral cord, always located in the anterior part of the ring tract in each neuromere (two in the meta-, one in the meso-, and one in the prothoracic ganglion). Some of the receptor fibres ascend to the suboesophageal ganglion. There are distinct subdivisions within the auditory, frontal metathoracic and mesothoracic neuropiles. The arrangement of the terminal arborisations of the four types of tympanal receptor cells according to their different frequency-intensity responses is somatotopic and similar in the two ganglia. Here the receptor cells of type-1 form a restricted lateroventral arborisation. Cells of type-4 occupy the caudal part with a dorsorostral extension. Cells of type-2 and -3 arborise in a subdivision between both. Most of the stained low-frequency receptors (type-1, -2, and -3) terminate either in the metathoracic or, predominantly, in the mesothoracic ganglion. In contrast, the high-frequency cells (type-4) ascend to the prothoracic ganglion. The receptor fibres of the different types of receptor cells differ in diameter.Abbreviations aRT anterior part of the ring tract - cf characteristic frequency - MVT median ventral tract - SEG suboesophageal ganglion - SMC supramedian commissure - VMT ventral median tract - VIT ventral intermediate tract Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft; part of program A7 in Sonderforschungsbereich 305 (Ecophysiology)  相似文献

In both vertebrates and invertebrates, homeotic selector genes confer morphological differences along the antero-posterior axis. However, insect wing development is independent of all homeotic gene functions, reflecting the ground plan of an ancestral pterygote, which bore wings on all segments. Dipteran insects such asDrosophila are characterized by a pair of wings in the mesothoracic segment. In all other segments, wing development is essentially repressed by different homeotic genes, although in the metathorax they are modified into a pair of halteres. This necessitates that during development all homeotic genes are to be maintained in a repressed state in wing imaginal discs. In this report we show that (i) the function of the segment polarity geneengrailed (en) is critical to keep the homeotic selector geneUltrabithorax (Ubx) repressed in wing imaginal discs, (ii) normal levels of En in the posterior compartment of haltere discs, however, are not enough to completely repressUbx, and (iii) the repression ofUbx byen is independent of Hedgehog signalling through which the long-range signalling ofen is mediated during wing development. Finally we provide evidence for a possible mechanism by whichen repressesUbx. On the basis of these results we propose thaten has acquired two independent functions during the evolution of dorsal appendages. In addition to its well-known function of conferring posterior fate and inducing long-range signalling to pattern the developing appendages, it maintains wing fate by keepingUbx repressed.  相似文献

The receptor mechanism mediating the avoidance behaviour of flying noctuid moths in response to brief ultrasonic pulses may require only a single pair of acoustic sense cells, one A1 cell in each tympanic organ (Roeder, 1966c). Introduction of the fluorescent dye, procion yellow, into the nerve fibres leaving the tympanic organ has allowed the reconstruction of the central morphology of A1, the more sensitive of the two acoustic cells. The A1 axon follows a superficial course for the first ~100 μ auterior to its dorsal root of entry (3N1) into the thoracic ganglia, then plunges ventrally into the posterior mesothoracic neuropil where it branches. The posterior part reaches through two-thirds of the metathoracic ganglion. The anterior branch bifurcates in the anterior mesothoracic ganglion to give rise to a posteriorly directed branch extending through the ventral mesothoracic neuropil and an anterior branch which passes through the connective into the posterior half of the prothoracic ganglion. Here it ramifies along the midline. The cell remains strictly ipsi-lateral with numerous processes extending right up to the midline in the ventral neuropil of all three ganglia. This morphology correlates well with the map of sites from which A1 acoustic responses can be recorded in the central nervous system.  相似文献

This paper describes the aggregation in vitro of cells dissociated from imaginal discs and demonstrates the sorting out of undifferentiated cells from different imaginal discs and from differently determined regions of the same imaginal disc, as well as the abilities of such cells to undergo pattern reconstruction when injected into larvae. Dissociated cells begin to aggregate by 1.5 hr of rotation. By 5 hr of rotation, large aggregates of loosely associated cells appear. By 18 hr the aggregates have condensed and taken on a characteristic epithelial structure. To study sorting out in undifferentiated cells, we combined a histochemical stain for acid phosphatase with the use of the acid phosphatase null mutant acphn-11. We performed cell mixing experiments with 0-2 (prospective notum) and 2-8 (prospective wing) fragments, with the A and P (prospective anterior and posterior) fragments of the dorsal mesothoracic disc and with mixtures of cells from ventral prothoracic and dorsal mesothoracic discs. We found that prospective anterior and posterior dorsal mesothoracic cells do not sort out, but that prospective notum and wing and leg and wing cells do. The results from differentiated implants are consistent with those from undifferentiated mixes.  相似文献

The feeding appendages ofAlvinella pompejana obtained from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent environment are described. They are characterized by a ciliated groove, the cells of which have a very distinctive ultrastructure, by groups of bipolar receptor cells and by several kinds of gland cells. Among these, one cell type is in an upside down position suggesting a function completely different from other epidermal secretory cells. The gills differ considerably from the feeding appendages on the basis of their ultrastructure. Their epidermis is very irregular in height; basal infoldings give the blood access to a space coming very near to the external medium. The blood vascular system is open. On the other hand, the gills ofAmphicteis gunneri are not effective sites of gas exchange, since their columnar epithelium is underlain with muscle cells. The cells composing the feeding appendages and gills ofAlvinella pompejana are characterized by ultrastructurally very different mitochondria.  相似文献

Summary Mutants in the bithorax system ofDrosophila produce homeotic transformations that affect the mesothoracic, metathoracic and first abdominal segments. In the present report we describe a clonal analysis of the development of those mutants transforming the metathorax and first abdominal segments into mesothorax. The main results indicate that (1) The normal dorsal metathoracic (haltere) disk has similar developmental parameters to the dorsal mesothoracic disk. The main difference is that the initial and final numbers of cells are different in both disks. (2) In flies mutant forBithorax andpostbithorax (which transform the haltere into wing) the transformed haltere disk has the same initial and final number of cells as the normal wing disk. (3) In morphogenetic mosaics homozygousbithorax (andpostbithorax) clones express their genotype autonomously regardless of the genotype of surrounding haltere cells. This autonomy is expressed in a regulation of the number of adult cells per compartment, typical cell affinities and final cuticular differentiation.  相似文献

The male reproductive tract of Leucoptera coffeella was processed for light and transmission electron microscopy. In the testis, the eupyrene cells are arranged in individual cysts, while the apyrene cysts form aggregates, never observed in other Lepidoptera. Both cysts contain 128 spermatozoa, which differ from the typical pattern. In the seminal vesicle, both types of spermatozoa are dispersed in the lumen, also different from other Lepidoptera. The apyrene spermatozoa are similar to those observed for other Lepidoptera. They present an anterior region covered by a dense cap and the flagellum is composed of a 9 + 9 + 2 axoneme and two mitochondrial derivatives. The eupyrene spermatozoa, however, differ from the typical pattern for Lepidoptera. Their anterior region contains a nucleus, an acrosome and a peculiar arc of eight accessory microtubules connected to the plasma membrane by dense bridges. In the nucleus–flagellum region, the ninth accessory microtubule is assembled between both mitochondrial derivatives, to participate in the axoneme. The flagellum comprises a 9 + 9 + 2 axoneme and two mitochondrial derivatives with paracrystalline cores. External to the plasma membrane and close to the accessory microtubules, there are tufts of an amorphous material, suggesting reduced lacinate appendages, while the reticular ones are absent. The reduction of lacinate appendages and the absence of sperm bundles in the seminal vesicle support the concept that the appendages of other Lepidoptera could be associated with the eupyrene aggregations. The characters ‘number of spermatozoa per cyst’ and ‘absence of bundles’ should be considered plesiomorphic, supporting the position of this taxon in the base of the Ditrysia.  相似文献

A new name, Chloromonas hohamii, is proposed to accommodate a common North American snow alga previously incorrectly referred to as Chloromonas polyptera. Chloromonas hohamii differs in having the motile vegetative cells with a cup-shaped chloroplast opening in the anterior end of the cell, shorter, narrower, ellipsoidal to elongate to somewhat fusiform, sexual spores with non-spiralled wall flanges, shorter and narrower daughter cells derived from the spores, and it grows in snow of significantly lower pH and conductivity. Meara stichopi and an undescribed species of Meara, both endosymbiotic in the intestine of aspidochirote holothurians, possess filiform extraepidermal bacteria among the epidermal cilia. Similar bacteria were also observed on one specimen of the free-living species Nemertoderma westbladi. The bacteria are of the gram-negative type, as evident by cell wall structure and results from gramstaining. On a few specimens of M. stichopi, the bacteria were found to carry peculiar distal appendages, or buds, on stalked cup-shaped cell extensions. As the bacteria described here appear to be species specific, they can be used in addition to other features in the often problematic characterization of the nemertodermatid species.  相似文献

Male abdomen appendages are a novel trait found within Sepsidae (Diptera). Here we demonstrate that they are likely to have evolved once, were lost three times, and then secondarily gained in one lineage. The developmental basis of these appendages was investigated by counting the number of histoblast cells in each abdominal segment in four species: two that represented the initial instance of appendage evolution, one that has secondarily gained appendages, and one species that did not have appendages. Males of all species with appendages have elevated cell counts for the fourth segment, which gives rise to the appendages. In Perochaeta dikowi, which reacquired the trait, the females also have elevated cell count on the fourth segment despite the fact that females do not develop appendages. The species without appendages has similar cell counts in all segments regardless of sex. These results suggest that the basis for appendage development is shared in males across all species, but the sexual dimorphism is regulated differently in P. dikowi.  相似文献

Abstract. The phylogenetic position of Polygordius is still pending; relationships with either Opheliidae or with Saccocirrus are the most favored hypotheses. The present study of Polygordius appendiculatus was designed to look for morphological characters supporting either of these two hypotheses. The homology of the anterior appendages, and the structure of the central nervous system and nuchal organ all required clarification; we also examined whether photoreceptor‐like sense organs exist in adults. From their innervation pattern, it is likely that the anterior appendages represent palps. They lack structures typical of palps in Canalipalpata, such as musculature and coelomic cavities, which would be expected in the case of a saccocirrid relationship. Thirteen photoreceptor‐like sense organs were found in front of the brain, the only structures resembling photoreceptors in adults of P. appendiculatus. These multicellular sense organs comprise a supportive cell and several sensory cells enclosing an extracellular cavity. There are three different types of sensory cells: one rhabdomeric and two ciliary. These sensory cells are combined differently into three forms of sense organ: the most frequent uses all three types of sensory cells, the second possesses one rhabdomeric and one ciliary cell type, and the third has two types of ciliary sensory cells. Whereas similar sensory cells are frequently found in various polychaetes, their combination in one sensory organ is unique to Polygordius and is considered to represent an autapomorphy. The nuchal organs exhibit features typical of polychaetes; there are no specific features in common with Saccocirrus. Instead, the covering structures show obvious similarities to Opheliidae, as can also be found in the central nervous system. Altogether, the current observations do not contradict a relationship with opheliids but provide no evidence of a relationship with Saccocirrus as has been found in certain molecular analyses, and thus currently leave the phylogenetic position of Polygordius unresolved.  相似文献

InMazus pumilus, all the floral appendages are initiated in acropetal sequence in the second cell layer (except stamens) of the floral primordium by periclinal divisions. The actinomorphic calyx tube is formed due to zonal growth. The zygomorphy in corolla is evident from the inception of petal primordia which arise sequentially as independent units in order of one anterior, a pair of anterio-lateral followed by a pair of posterio-lateral. Later these primordia exhibit differential growth because of which zygomorphy becomes more pronounced. The upper corolla tube is formed by interprimordial growth and lower corolla tube by zonal growth. Stamens are initiated in the third layer of the floral apex. Unlike sepals and petals, in the development of stamens (4) underlying cells of corpus also contribute. Posterior stamen is absent. The stamens become epipetalous because of interprimordial and zonal growth in the common region below the bases of petals as well as stamens. The two carpel primordia arise as crescent shaped structures which become continuous due to interprimordial growth. The ovary is formed by a ring of zonal meristem. The style develops later between stigma and ovary because of intercalary growth. The residual apex grows vertically along with the ovary and forms the septum of the ovary. All the floral appendages exhibit similar pattern of histogenesis and early growth suggesting thereby the appendicular nature of these appendages.  相似文献

Using a monoclonal antibody and image-processing procedures, the patterns of expression of the Ultrabithorax (Ubx) gene product have been characterized in Drosophila larvae. As reported previously, the metathoracic imaginal discs stain most intensely with anti-Ubx, with some mesothoracic and no prothoracic expression detectable. In the metathoracic discs, the greatest modulation in anti-Ubx staining is along the proximodistal axis. Ubx is generally expressed at higher levels in the posterior regions of metathoracic discs, although relatively high anterior expression is found in some areas. Expression in the mature wing disc is confined to the squamous peripodial membrane cells; in younger wings, Ubx expression fills the posterior half of the peripodial side of the disc. The mesothoracic leg stains with a pattern that is qualitatively similar (but not identical) to that of the metathoracic leg; Ubx is expressed in some anterior regions of the mesothoracic leg, in parasegment 4. Double staining with anti-Ubx and anti-engrailed reveals that discontinuities in Ubx expression that have been suggested to correspond to compartment borders do not coincide with the compartment boundaries in some cases. In the larval ventral ganglion, Ubx expression is greatest in parasegments 5 and 6, as in the embryonic nervous system.  相似文献

Abstract

The ultrastructure of Dunaliella salina. — The ultrastructure of Dunaliella salina is described. Its structural organisation is rather similar to that previously reported for other Volvocales. The lack of a cellulosic wall is confirmed; the protoplast is bounded only by the monolayered plasma membrane which covers also the flagella. The conspicuous cup-shaped chloroplast fills up the whole back part of the cell and its terminal part is close to the anterior pole: consequently all the other cellular organelles are confined in its deep anterior cavity. The pyrenoid is located in the back part of the chloroplast: communication between the pyrenoid and the surrounding chloroplast is established by a system of paired lamellae. The droplets of carotenoids which form the eyespot are not stacked in regular order. The Golgi apparatus is located in the anterior part and is formed by two conspicuous dictyosomes. A great number of vesciculae, perhaps formed by the dictyosome, are crowded around the insertion of the two flagella. Evidence for the existence of an endoplasmic reticulum is uncertain. Two unknown structures are observed and their morphological organisation is described.  相似文献

The petals ofAconitum were classified into six types. Type I: the labium tubular at the base and no appendage inside. Type II: a lambda (A)-shaped enation present inside the limb. The upper part of the enation is situated at the lower edge of the spur mouth and both wings of the enation extend to margins of the labium. Type III resembles type II but both wings do not extend to the margins. Type IV: a small flap attached at the lower edge of the spur mouth. Type V: two auriculate appendages present on both lateral walls of the labium. Type VI: without inside appendage. Most species of sect.Lycoctonum have type I petal and those of sect.Aconitum have type V petal. Type I is distinctly cup-shaped or peltate with a well developed cross zone or adaxial wall and type II is a modification of type I. Type VI is distinctly flat or epeltate without the cross zone. Others are intermediate between cup-shaped and flat or peltate and epeltate types. Based on the observation of petal ontogeny onA. pterocaule var.glabrescens, A. vulparia andA. japonicum var.eizanense, the relation among these types was explained by the partial or total reduction of the adaxial meristematic regions.  相似文献

The pupae of Tenebrio exhibit periodic pulsations in the haemolymph pressure which are independent of the heartbeat. Tensometric records of the extracardiac pulses show certain specific modifications caused by changes in either the internal or external environment. Chronological changes in the pulse pattern were associated with adult morphogenesis and ecdysis. The abdominal pump controlling extracardiac pressure pulsations is independent of the brain or of any other cephalic part of the nervous system. The nerve impulses controlling the pump arise only in the mesothoracic ganglion. They are carried by the connectives to certain abdominal ganglia from which they are further transmitted to the contracting intersegmental abdominal muscles. The extracardiac pulses in haemolymph pressure aid in the maintenance of water balance and respiration and assist with the circulation of haemolymph through the appendages.  相似文献

Like other Anisoptera Hemianax ephippiger (Burmeister) bears two sets of copulatory apparatuses. The first set which is primary in nature is located on the ventral surface of the ninth abdominal segment and consists of the vestigial penis, the gonocoxites, the supra-anal appendages, the infra-anal appendage. The supra-anal appendages are well developed, lanceolate with serrate margin and spinous apices. They are dorso-ventrally flattened and furnished with long hairs and black teeth-like tubercles (T). The secondary copulatory complex is lodged inside the membranous fossa located on the ventral surface of second and third abdominal segments. It consists of anterior lamina, the posterior lamina, the supporting framework, the hamules, the penis sheath, the penis vesicle and the penis. The anterior lamina is deeply cleft at the posterior margin to accommodate the ovipositor of the female during copulation. Both the portions of the supporting framework are well developed. The anterior portion is somewhat rectangular while the posterior portion is nearly U-shaped. The anterior hamules are well developed with truncated and hooked portions, while the posterior hamules are very much reduced. The penis sheath is forcepate with well developed rectangular flap which hangs over the penis. The penis is stout, clearly demarcated into three segments, and bears a prominent groove on the mid-ventral line.  相似文献

The structure and arrangement of appendages (scalids) on the head of the homalorhagid kinorhynch Kinorhynchus phyllotropis Brown & Higgins, 1983 are named, described and illustrated. In adults of this species, seven rings of external scalids are separated by segment boundary structures from the oral styles and three rings of internal scalids. All of these appendages contain ciliated receptor cells which pass to pores at the scalid tips, and all but the two anterior rings are jointed. All of these appendages are radially arranged in multiples of five, and closely associated with the ten lobed circumoral nerve ring. The most posterior scalid ring consists of fourteen trichoscalids, of which six are longer than the other eight. The six longer trichoscalids are arranged in bilateral symmetry, two to each of the three facets of the body. Similarities between scalid arrangement in Kinorhyncha and Loricifera are discussed.  相似文献

Rhipidocotyle genovi n. sp. is described from the fishGaidropsarus mediterraneus (L.) (Gadiformes: Gadidae) in the Black Sea. Morphological features characteristic of this species include: an anterior sucker with seven prominent muscular appendages; a pharynx rather posterior in position; ovary and testes relatively anterior in position, usually anterior to the pharynx; a long (in relation to body length) sucker, cirrus-sac and excretory vesicle; the presence of a pre-oral lip; and contiguous vitelline fields which form an arch. The new species is distinguished fromR. galeata, R. lamberti andBucephalus marinum. This is the first member of the genus whose adults are recovered from Black Sea marine fishes. Metacercariae, which encyst in large numbers in the musculature and fins of the blenniid fishesBlennius tentacularis, B. sanguinolentus, B pavo, B. sphinx andB. zvonimiri and exhibit a similar morphology to the adult, are described.  相似文献
