Sampling variability and colonization rate of introduced substrates (plastic trays filled with pebble and cobble) in two southwestern Virginia streams are described. Substrates were rapidly colonized by aquatic macroinvertebrates, but colonization rates differed between years, possibly due to annual variability in macroinvertebrate abundance. To examine the applicability of using these substrates for biomonitoring benthic communities, trays were placed at several locations in a river receiving power plant discharges. Only six samples were necessary to detect a 15%reduction in macroinvertebrate density and a 12% reduction in number of taxa at effluent sites. Benthic communities established on rock-filled trays and multiplate samplers collected from the same stations during the same period were compared. Although multiplate samplers were more variable than rock trays and were selective for different taxa, both substrate types showed significant differences in community parameters among locations. Rock trays at all sites were dominated by Cheumatopsyche sp., whereas chironomids were more abundant on multiplate samplers. The relative abundance of mayflies was reduced at the effluent site on both substrate types.  相似文献

Streams in the loess hills of northwest Mississippi have undergone dramatic physical changes since European settlement and both physical and water quality processes may play a role in influencing biotic communities of these stream systems. The objectives of this study were to identify the response of macroinvertebrate taxa to water quality and habitat parameters in streams of northwest Mississippi, examine the efficacy of an a priori classification system of stream channel evolution and condition class using macroinvertebrate communities, and examine short-term (<2 yr) temporal variation of macroinvertebrate communities. Separation of sites based on four condition classifications was not distinct. However, best attainable sites did plot together in an ordination analysis suggesting similarity in macroinvertebrate communities for least disturbed sites. Similarly, for stage of channel evolution, sites characterized by lack of bank failure and sinuous fluvial processes had relatively similar macroinvertebrate communities. Ordination analysis also indicated high temporal variation of macroinvertebrate communities. Reference sites (best attainable and stable sites) had more similar communities between years than unstable and impacted sites. Results of this study: (1) suggest total solids, total phosphorus concentration, percent substrate as sand, ammonia concentration, and conductivity were important variables for structuring stream macroinvertebrate communities in northwest Mississippi, (2) identify potential indicator taxa for assessing such streams based on water quality and physical habitat, (3) provide support for current a priori site classifications at the best attainable (least impacted) category relative to the macroinvertebrate communities, and (4) demonstrate that between-year variation is an important factor when assessing streams of north Mississippi and this variability may be related to the degree of stream degradation.  相似文献

In arid and semi-arid regions of the southwestern United States and other parts of the world, flows of historically ephemeral streams are now perennially dominated by municipal and/or industrial effluent discharges, particularly in urbanized watersheds. Because effluent-dominated and dependent water bodies have previously received limited scientific study, we reviewed select contemporary topics associated with water quality of ephemeral streams receiving effluent flows. Our findings indicate that these ecosystems present numerous challenges to aquatic scientists and water resources managers, including: 1) appropriate ecosystems or upstream conditions used reference sites in biomonitoring are difficult to locate or do not exist; 2) water quality criteria, particularly for metals, are dramatically influenced by unique site-specific stream and land use conditions; 3) effluent-dominated streams represent worse-case scenarios for evaluating and predicting aquatic responses to emerging contaminants (e.g., pharmaceuticals and personal care products); 4) low-flow and drought conditions often preclude effective biomonitoring and water quality interpretation, or skew ambient assessment results; 5) chemical-physical water quality parameters (e.g., dissolved oxygen, conductivity, temperature) are dramatically altered by effluent and stormwater characteristics; and 6) beneficial reuse of reclaimed effluent waters potentially conflict with sustainability of ecological integrity. Subsequently, we recommend several water quality research priorities for effluentdominated water bodies.  相似文献

Salinization of freshwater ecosystems as a result of human activities has markedly increased in recent years. Much attention is currently directed at evaluating the effects of increased salinity on freshwater biota. In the Central Appalachian region of the eastern United States, specific conductance from alkaline discharges associated with mountain top mining practices has been implicated in macroinvertebrate community declines in streams receiving coal mining discharges. Whole effluent toxicity testing of receiving stream water was used to test the hypothesis that mine discharges are toxic to laboratory test organisms and further, that toxicity is related to ionic concentrations as indicated by conductivity. Chronic toxicity testing using Ceriodaphnia dubia was conducted by contract laboratories at 72 sites with a total of 129 tests over a 3.5 year period. The database was evaluated to determine the ionic composition of mine effluent dominated streams and whether discharge constituents were related to toxicity in C. dubia. As expected, sulfate was found to be the dominant anion in streams receiving mining discharges with bicarbonate variable and sometimes a substantial component of the dissolved solids. Overall, the temporal variability in conductance was low at each site which would indicate fairly stable water quality conditions. Results of the toxicity tests show no relationship between conductance and survival of C. dubia in the mining influenced streams with the traditional toxicity test endpoints. However, consideration of the entire dataset revealed a significant inverse relationship between conductivity and neonate production. While conductivity explained very little of the high variability in the offspring production (r2 = 0.1304), the average numbers of offspring were consistently less than 20 neonates at the highest conductivities.  相似文献

1. Despite non‐point‐source (NPS) pollution being perhaps the most ubiquitous stressor affecting urban streams, there is a lack of research assessing how urban NPS pollution affects stream ecosystems. We used a natural experimental design approach to assess how stream macroinvertebrate community structure, secondary production and trophic structure are influenced by urban NPS pollution in six streams. 2. Differences in macroinvertebrate community structure and secondary production among sites were highly correlated with stream‐water specific conductivity and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentrations. Macroinvertebrate richness, the Shannon diversity index and the Shannon evenness index were all negatively correlated with specific conductivity. These patterns were driven by differences in the richness and production of EPT and other intolerant taxa. Production of the five most productive taxa, tolerant taxa, non‐insect taxa and primary consumers were all positively correlated with stream‐water DIP. 3. Despite the positive correlation between primary consumer production and DIP, there was no correlation between macroinvertebrate predator production and either total or primary consumer macroinvertebrate production. This was observed because DIP was positively correlated with the production of non‐insect macroinvertebrate taxa assumed to be relatively unavailable for macroinvertebrate predator consumption. After removing production of these taxa, we observed a strong positive correlation between macroinvertebrate predator production and production of available prey. 4. Our results suggest that urban NPS pollution not only affects macroinvertebrate community structure, but also alters secondary production and trophic‐level dynamics. Differences in taxon production in our study indicate the potential for altered energy flow through stream food webs and potential effects on subsidies of aquatic insect prey to riparian food webs.  相似文献

Our study was designed to assess the relative importance of algae and bacteria as sources of energy for stream macroinvertebrates. In one experiment, we manipulated algae by artificially shading six sections in each of two streams, one stream with an open canopy (clear-cut drainage basin) and the other with a closed canopy (forested drainage basin); both streams were in Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, USA. Chlorophyll a concentrations were reduced from 0.2 to 0.05 μg/cm2 in artificially shaded sections of both streams. However, macroinvertebrates showed no response to these algal manipulations in either the clear-cut or forested stream. Nutrient concentrations (N and P) were low and limiting to primary production in both the clear-cut and forested streams. Additionally, both streams had relatively low macroinvertebrate densities suggesting bottom-up controls were important in macroinvertebrate abundance. However, the forested stream did have higher macroinvertebrate densities presumably because of higher inputs of coarse particulate organic matter from the riparian vegetation. In a second experiment, in Augusta Creek, Michigan, we manipulated both algae and bacteria. To reduce algae, we artificially shaded experimental stream channels so that chlorophyll a was reduced from natural levels of 3.0–5.6 to 0.4–0.7 μg/cm2. Half of the shaded channels had dissolved organic carbon (DOC – sucrose) dripped into them to raise DOC levels by 2–3 mg/l and thus stimulate bacterial abundance. Open channels, with higher algal abundance, had higher densities of Ephemerella, but only in November when nymphs were larger. Channels with increased DOC had higher bacterial abundances, higher densities of Chironomidae and lower densities of Heptageniidae. Several other macroinvertebrate taxa that were at relatively low abundance in our samples showed no significant response to these manipulations. Our results suggest that early instar Ephemerella may not rely as heavily on algae as later instars. Also, certain taxa were able to use the heterotrophic microbial community, especially chironomids which increased in numbers when bacterial density increased; thus, the bacterial carbon source may be more important to some stream macroinvertebrates than previous studies have suggested.  相似文献

Patterns of macroinvertebrate traits along three glacial stream continuums   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. Glacier‐fed streams are characterised by low spatial but high temporal heterogeneity, manifested in seasonal and diurnal discharge and suspended sediment peaks induced by glacial runoff. These streams shelter macroinvertebrate communities adapted to such harsh environmental conditions. Studies relating macroinvertebrate traits to environmental conditions in glacial streams could provide important insights into the structure and function of glacial stream communities. 2. From data collected in three glacial streams from the central Swiss and southern French Alps, we analysed the relationships among six biological traits to define five groups of macroinvertebrate taxa with similar suites of traits. 3. The longitudinal distribution of the five groups and of individual traits was analysed, as well as their variation according to a glaciality index combining water temperature, conductivity, suspended solids and substrate stability. 4. The trait diversity along the three streams showed a strong upstream‐downstream gradient. The upper reaches were dominated by a single group of taxa characterised by small, crawling, deposit feeders. The other trait‐based groups appeared progressively downstream. 5. Changes in the relative frequency of trait‐based groups along the glaciality gradient highlighted the dominance of all‐rounder resistant/resilient traits in the three streams and confirmed that environmental conditions in the glacial streams are too harsh or uniform to allow macroinvertebrate communities to develop alternative suites of traits. The findings are discussed in relation to the question of trait coding in the available literature.  相似文献

Tropical stream ecosystems in montane forest watersheds are important centers of endemism and diversity and provide essential ecosystem services. These habitats are subject to a variety of stressors, including the conversion of adjacent terrestrial habitats from forest to agriculture, but the impacts of these anthropogenic effects are largely unknown because of the paucity of studies in these systems. In montane habitats in the wet tropics, large-scale cultivation of tea is common and can represent an important source of income at local and national scales. However, little is known about how tea cultivation impacts adjacent stream ecosystems. In this study, we examine stream macroinvertebrate assemblages in a biodiversity hotspot the East Usambara Mountains, Tanzania. Specifically, we compare diversity of macroinvertebrate assemblages found on cobbles in stream riffles in watersheds dominated by forest with those surrounded by tea cultivation. We found that streams surrounded by tea were characterized by significantly lower dissolved oxygen and had lower total estimated species richness and number of families. Furthermore, the richness of invertebrate taxa known to be sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance were substantially reduced in tea streams and general assemblage-level analysis shows significant differences in the composition of macroinvertebrate assemblages between tea and forested streams. Our results suggest that tea cultivation may reduce stream habitat quality and biodiversity in the East Usambaras. Further research is needed to evaluate the effects of tea cultivation on streams over longer times scales and to address methods for minimizing negative effects of agriculture on montane stream communities.  相似文献

The relationships between water chemistry and aquatic macroinvertebrate communities of 41 headwater streams were studied in the Vosges Mountains (N-E of France) in an attempt to assess the impact of acidification on macroinvertebrate diversity. The taxa richness of macroinvertebrates decreased drastically in headwater streams which were characterized by low pH, low calcium and high aluminum content. All taxonomic groups were affected, but Molluscans, Crustaceans and Ephemeroptera disappeared totally from strongly acidified streams. Simple indices based on taxa richness such as the coefficient of community loss may provide accurate tools to quickly assess the impact of acidification on macroinvertebrate communities. Despite the reduction of atmospheric SO2 emissions, acidification of freshwater in the Vosges Mountains continues to affect streams which were believed in the past to constitute refuge biotopes for numerous species. Consequently, acidification represents a real threat for numerous invertebrates. This study arises the question of the evolution in the future of headwater stream ecosystems. Urgent decisions and interventions are required to preserve non-acidified streams and to restore impacted ecosystems while awaiting spontaneous recovery.  相似文献

比较了广东横石水河流域二条相邻的3级溪流大型底栖动物的漂流种类组成及昼夜节律,其中一条溪流受广东大宝山矿外排的酸性矿山废水严重污染,水体pH值仅为3.45且重金属严重超标,而另一条为相邻的清洁溪流.结果表明:清洁溪流中大型底栖动物的数量和种类远比受酸性矿山废水污染的溪流丰富.在清洁溪流中共采获漂流底栖动物6 871头,隶属10目52类群,其中水生昆虫的数量和种类占绝对优势 (99.5%).但总漂流密度占优势的类群(相对多度超过5%)不多,主要集中在以下几种水生昆虫:七鳃假二翅蜉 (28.5%)、宜兴似动蜉 (13.8%)、短脉纹石蛾(13.2%)、白背锯形蜉(7.5%)、摇蚊科(6.5%) 和肖扁泥甲(5.0%).蜉蝣目种类和数量最多,占全部漂流底栖动物总个体数的65%,其中又以四节蜉科居多,占蜉蝣目总个体数的63%.毛翅目昆虫的数量(18%)仅次于蜉蝣目.大型底栖动物的漂流表现出明显的昼夜节律,漂流主要在夜间进行,未发现有日漂者.漂流密度高峰出现在21:00和2:00,漂流密度分别为(70.3±10.8)和(289.0±124.6) 头·100 m-3.大多数优势种类漂流高峰出现的时段略有不同,但有些优势种类(如摇蚊科和肖扁泥甲)并未表现出明显的漂流昼夜差异.在受酸性矿山废水污染的溪流中,漂流动物只有1种嗜酸性的多足摇蚊,其漂流活动也在夜间进行,并有3个明显的漂流高峰,分别出现在19:00、0:00和4:00,最高漂流密度仅为(6.7±5.2)头·100m-3.说明酸性矿山废水不仅降低了溪流中漂流底栖动物的物种多样性和数量,也改变了其漂流模式.  相似文献

A water quality survey was conducted from June, 1977 to May, 1978 on Pine Island and Little Pine Island Bayous of southeast Texas. Generally, good water quality was found. At four locations in the streams, brine seepage was indicated. This tended to improve stream conditions by decreasing turbidity and suspended solids.The benthic fauna was dominated by oligochaetes and chironomids. The greatest number of total and insect taxa occurred at the station with lowest turbidity. Below a sewage outfall the diversity decreased. However, stream conditions did not improve downstream due to increased turbidity.This research was funded in part by the National Park Service and Lamar University  相似文献

We evaluated the restoration of physical habitats and its influence on macroinvertebrate community structure in 18 Danish lowland streams comprising six restored streams, six streams with little physical alteration and six channelized streams. We hypothesized that physical habitats and macroinvertebrate communities of restored streams would resemble those of natural streams, while those of the channelized streams would differ from both restored and near-natural streams. Physical habitats were surveyed for substrate composition, depth, width and current velocity. Macroinvertebrates were sampled along 100 m reaches in each stream, in edge habitats and in riffle/run habitats located in the center of the stream. Restoration significantly altered the physical conditions and affected the interactions between stream habitat heterogeneity and macroinvertebrate diversity. The substrate in the restored streams was dominated by pebble, whereas the substrate in the channelized and natural streams was dominated by sand. In the natural streams a relationship was identified between slope and pebble/gravel coverage, indicating a coupling of energy and substrate characteristics. Such a relationship did not occur in the channelized or in the restored streams where placement of large amounts of pebble/gravel distorted the natural relationship. The analyses revealed, a direct link between substrate heterogeneity and macroinvertebrate diversity in the natural streams. A similar relationship was not found in either the channelized or the restored streams, which we attribute to a de-coupling of the natural relationship between benthic community diversity and physical habitat diversity. Our study results suggest that restoration schemes should aim at restoring the natural physical structural complexity in the streams and at the same time enhance the possibility of re-generating the natural geomorphological processes sustaining the habitats in streams and rivers. Documentation of restoration efforts should be intensified with continuous monitoring of geomorphological and ecological changes including surveys of reference river systems.  相似文献

We developed ecological indicators of stream macroinvertebrates in two regions of the Midwestern USA dominated by row-crop agriculture. Indicators were identified in a hierarchical fashion. Reach-scale variables related to macroinvertebrate attributes were first identified, and then catchment-scale variables related to those reach-scale variables were identified. Reach-scale indicators common to both regions were % fine sediments, number of habitats, and width:depth ratio. SD of elevation and % commercial land use were selected as catchment-scale indicators in both regions. Our analyses revealed a multi-scale mechanistic relationship between macroinvertebrate attributes associated with degraded conditions (i.e., fewer taxa of Plecoptera and Trichoptera, and a higher proportion of chironomids, burrowers, and depositional taxa) and % fine sediments in stream reaches, which, in turn, was negatively related to catchment characteristics (i.e., SD of elevation) in one region. Understanding how natural variables such as topography influence channel shape and within-channel structure can help guide management options and expectations for different regions. We suggest that developing multi-scale indicators in a mechanistic fashion will be more effective than developing indicators at only one spatial scale for protecting and restoring stream structure and function.  相似文献

1. To examine the effects of forest harvest practices on headwater stream macroinvertebrates, we compiled a 167 site database with macroinvertebrate, fish, physical habitat and catchment land cover data from the three forested ecoregions in western Oregon. For our analysis, headwater streams were defined by catchment areas <10 km2 and perennial water during summer low flows. Almost all sites in the database were selected using a randomised survey design, constituting a representative sample of headwater streams in these ecoregions. 2. Macroinvertebrate taxonomic and functional feeding group composition were very similar among the three ecoregions in the study area (Coast Range, Cascades and Klamath Mountains). On average, 55% of the individuals at each site were in the orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera or Trichoptera. Dipteran taxa (mostly chironomids) accounted for another 34%. At almost all sites, non‐insects made up <10% of the macroinvertebrate assemblage. Almost half (49%) of the assemblages were collectors; remaining individuals were about evenly divided among scrapers, shredders and predators. 3. There were 189 different macroinvertebrate taxa at the 167 sites with richness at individual sites ranging from 7 to 71 taxa. Ordination by non‐metric multidimensional scaling revealed a strong association between % Ephemeroptera, especially Baetis, and site scores along the first axis. This axis was also strongly related to % coarse substratum and fast water habitat. The second axis was strongly related to % intolerant individuals, site slope and altitude. No strong relationships were evident between any ordination axis and either logging activity, presence/absence of fish, catchment size or ecoregion. 4. Based on macroinvertebrate index of biotic integrity (IBI) scores, 62% of the sites had no impairment, 31% of the sites had slight impairment and only 6% of the sites had moderate or severe impairment. IBI scores were not strongly related to forest harvest history. All four severely impaired sites and five of the seven sites with moderate impairment were lower altitude, shallower slope stream reaches located in the Coast Range with evidence of agricultural activity in their catchment or riparian zone. % sand + fine substratum was the environmental variable most strongly related to macroinvertebrate IBI.  相似文献

1. During the past two decades, understanding of the structure and function of glacier‐fed stream ecosystems at temperate latitudes has increased substantially. In contrast, information on their tropical counterparts is very limited. We studied three neighbouring glacier‐fed streams in the tropical Andes of Ecuador. Our main goals were (i) to determine overall longitudinal patterns in density, taxon richness and the composition of macroinvertebrate assemblages and driving factors in equatorial glacial streams and (ii) to examine variability among replicate streams in faunal metrics and assemblages, and stream‐specific effects of supposed environmental key factors. 2. We measured four geographical and 17 environmental factors and collected five Surber samples (500 cm2) of macroinvertebrates at each of nine sites, three sites along three streams. The streams were located 1–5 km apart. In each stream, the three sites were placed at comparable distances from the glacier and were grouped as ‘upper’ (50–200 m), ‘middle’ (1.5 km) and ‘lower’ sites (3.5–5.6 km). 3. In total, 2200 individuals (64% chironomids) were collected and 47 taxa (30 dipterans, 18 of these Chironomidae) identified. Density ranged from 176 to 372 ind. m?2, and the number of taxa ranged from 2 to 6 at the upper sites and 868–3044 ind. m?2 and 21–27 taxa at the lower sites. Density, number of taxa, rarefied richness and axis‐1 coordinates from a MDS ordination increased logarithmically with distance from the glacier. These faunal metrics were equally related to altitude and glacier per cent of catchment and correlated with maximum conductivity, mean temperature, mean daily maximum temperature and a channel stability index. As expected, the mean difference in distance decay in similarity was higher at the upper (47% km?1) than at the lower reaches (20% km?1) of the streams. 4. The number of taxa varied among sites within the upper and middle groups, but not among the lower sites. In contrast, but in accordance with our expectation, assemblage composition did not differ among upper sites but did so at middle and lower sites, following a supposed decrease in environmental harshness along the streams. Relationships between faunal metrics and the four environmental variables mean temperature, the stability index, chlorophyll a and coarse particulate organic matter also varied among the three streams. Generalised linear model analyses revealed that temperature interacted with stream on macroinvertebrate density, while chlorophyll a had a significant effect on the number of taxa in interaction with stream and stability. 5. The basic predictions of the Milner et al. (2001a) , model regarding longitudinal faunal patterns and temperature and stability as main driving factors were met by our three replicate equatorial glacial streams. Qualitative departures from the model were mainly because of zoogeographical differences. We demonstrated that variability in assemblages between comparable sites in closely situated streams was considerable, and the effect of key environmental factors varied among streams and interacted with other factors. Quantifying spatial variation in benthic assemblages may help us foresee possible consequences for biodiversity as a result of glacial retreat.  相似文献

Urban streams globally are characterised by degraded habitat conditions and low aquatic biodiversity, but are increasingly becoming the focus of restoration activities. We investigated habitat quality, ecological function, and fish and macroinvertebrate community composition of gully streams in Hamilton City, New Zealand, and compared these with a selection of periurban sites surrounded by rural land. A similar complement of fish species was found at urban and periurban sites, including two threatened species, with only one introduced fish widespread (Gambusia affinis). Stream macroinvertebrate community metrics indicated low ecological condition at most urban and periurban sites, but highlighted the presence of one high value urban site with a fauna dominated by sensitive taxa. Light-trapping around seepages in city gullies revealed the presence of several caddisfly species normally associated with native forest, suggesting that seepage habitats can provide important refugia for some aquatic insects in urban environments. Qualitative measures of stream habitat were not significantly different between urban and periurban sites, but urban streams had significantly lower hydraulic function and higher biogeochemical function than periurban streams. These functional differences are thought to reflect, respectively, (1) the combined effects of channel modification and stormwater hydrology, and (2) the influence of riparian vegetation providing shade and enhancing habitat in streams. Significant relationships between some macroinvertebrate community metrics and riparian vegetation buffering and bank protection suggest that riparian enhancement may have beneficial ecological outcomes in some urban streams. Other actions that may contribute to urban stream restoration goals include an integrated catchment approach to resolving fish passage issues, active reintroduction of wood to streams to enhance cover and habitat heterogeneity, and seeding of depauperate streams with native migratory fish to help initiate natural recolonisation.  相似文献

  • 1 The combined effects of fish predation, substrate complexity and flow on benthic macroinvertebrates inhabiting riffles was investigated in a Hong Kong stream. Predation was manipulated using fish inclusion/exclusion cages containing complex (= many refuges) or simple (= few refuges) substrates. Experiments were undertaken during the winter dry season, when disturbance due to flow events was minimal, and repeated during the summer monsoon, when the stream experienced spates of varying intensity and duration.
  • 2 Predation by the fish, Oreonectes platycephalus, significantly reduced the abundance of macroinvertebrates, especially chironomids and mayflies. Because chironomids (mostly Chironominae) were the dominant cage colonists, there was also a reduction in total macroinvertebrate density.
  • 3 Predator impacts were significantly lessened during the wet season, when macroinvertebrate densities increased considerably, but significant reductions in the densities of vulnerable taxa and total macroinvertebrate abundance were nevertheless apparent.
  • 4 Substrate complexity (the presence of prey refuges) had no significant effect on the ability of predators to reduce prey abundance.
  • 5 Detritus accumulated in cages during the latter part of the study, and densities of most taxa were correlated with detrital standing stocks.

为了解华南地区酸性矿山废水对溪流中树叶分解的影响,在广东省大宝山矿区附近的1条受酸性矿山废水污染(pH值为2.7—3.4且富含多种重金属元素)的3级溪流中,利用2种孔径(5ram的网袋和0.1ram的布袋)的分解网袋对2种树叶(人面子和蒲桃)进行了为期101d的树叶分解研究。结果表明,人面子树叶网袋和布袋中的树叶干重剩余率分别为39%和48%,而蒲桃树叶网袋和布袋中的干重剩余率仍保持较高的水平,分别为61%和70%。根据指数衰减模型计算出树叶分解的半衰期,人面子树叶在网袋和布袋中的分解半衰期分别为57d和69d,而蒲桃树叶则分别为14-4d和217d。蒲桃树叶的分解速率明显比人面子树叶慢。在网袋中定殖的底栖动物主要是集食者,其中优势类群为摇蚊幼虫,占底栖动物个体总数的99%。摇蚊种群在网袋中的数量波动对2种树叶分解速率的影响并不明显。结果表明,受酸性矿山废水的影响,底栖动物群落的多样性大为减少。同时由于各种金属氧化物在树叶表面的不断沉淀,使树叶处于缺氧状态,抑制了微生物的活动,导致树叶分解速率大为降低。  相似文献

  1. Understanding changes in macroinvertebrate communities is important because they play a large role in stream ecosystem functioning, and they are an important food resource for fish. Beaver-induced changes to stream morphology could alter macroinvertebrate communities, which in turn could affect food webs and ecosystem function. However, studies investigating the effects of North American beaver activities on macroinvertebrates are rare in the inter-mountain west, an area with high potential for beaver-assisted restoration.
  2. The aim of this study was to quantify differences in the macroinvertebrate community between unaltered segments of streams and within beaver ponds in north-eastern Utah, U.S.A. We assessed macroinvertebrate species richness, biomass, density, functional feeding group composition, mobility group composition, and macroinvertebrate habitat characteristics to test the hypothesis that macroinvertebrate communities will differ among habitat types (undammed stream segments and beaver ponds) in beaver-occupied streams.
  3. Beaver pond communities significantly differed from lotic reach communities in many ways. Beaver ponds were less diverse with 25% fewer species. Although there was variability among streams, in general, beaver ponds had 75% fewer individuals and 90% lower total macroinvertebrate biomass compared to lotic reaches.
  4. Regarding functional feeding groups, beaver ponds contained more engulfers, while lotic reaches contained more scrapers, filterers, and gatherers. For mobility groups, beaver ponds had more sprawlers, while lotic reaches had more clingers. Swimmers were also more prevalent in lotic reaches, although this is probably due to the abundance of Baetis within lotic reaches. More beaver pond taxa were classified as lentic-dwelling insects, while more lotic reach taxa were categorised as preferring lotic habitats.
  5. The creation of ponds by beavers fundamentally altered the macroinvertebrate community in north-eastern Utah streams. Such changes to stream macroinvertebrate communities suggest that recolonisation of beavers across North America may be altering stream functioning and food webs. Our study highlights the need to further investigate the effects of beaver recolonisation on stream communities.
