In September, 1978, ten ponds inhabited by Cladocera were sampled along the coasts of the Strait of Belle Isle. Fourteen out of nineteen species that were found there also occur in Greenland. On the other hand, a comparison with faunal lists for the island of Newfoundland and several faunal regions of Western Europe, and the ecological distribution of all European Cladocera reveals that the Arctic is settled exclusively by euryecious species, so that the relatively strong “arctic” element within the cladoceran fauna along the Strait of Belle Isle indicates simply the extreme conditions. Macrothrix hirsuticornis NORMAN & BRADY and Daphnia pulex LEYDIG are new for the island of Newfoundland.  相似文献

Sixty species of freshwater Cladocera (Crustacea, Branchiopoda) are recorded from Lake Tonle Sap and its adjacent waters, Cambodia. Four species, Ceriodaphnia laticaudata, Bunops cf. tuberculatus, Leydigia australis, and Chydorus cf. dentifer are newly recorded from Southeast Asia, and occurrence of Macrothrix pholpunthini is secondary confirmed in the world. The present cladoceran fauna is characterized by having rich epiphytic and benthic forms. It can be associated with the shallow and vegetation-rich habitats of the study sites.  相似文献

A short characterization of Macrothrix flabelligera Smirnov, 1992 (Cladocera, Macrothricidae) is presented, following a recent record of this species in Brazil. General aspects and morphological details of the body of parthenogenetic and ephippial females, as well as of males, are described and illustrated.  相似文献

Two new species of Cladocera were found during an intensive study of Malaysian zooplankton. Macrothrix malaysiensis sp. nov. is unique in the genus in possessing a characteristic posterodorsal spine on the carapace. The structure of the antennules is also diagnostic. Alona freyi sp. nov. closely resembles A. verrucosa Sars and A. rigidicaudis (Smirnov). However, it can be diagnosed by the characteristic head shield, labral plate, ventral setae and the structure of the postabdomen.  相似文献

Although Cladocera are collected often in large rivers, their importance in streams has been under-estimated. This paper summarizes the results of a preliminary study of the benthic Cladocera in the streams of three watersheds in South Central Indiana. Seventeen sites were sampled with respect to species of benthic Cladocera present, their relative abundance, population size, and population dynamics.Cladocera were present in all streams and sites in the three watersheds. Nineteen species were collected: 13 species from the family Chydoridae, 3 Daphniidae, 2 Macrothricidae, and 1 Bosminidae. Just four species — Alona circumfimbriata, Chydorus brevilabris, Pleuroxus denticulatus, and Macrothrix laticornis — made up 68–96% of the numbers at all sites.Density of Cladocera ranged from 3–5200 m–2 and they reproduced and maintained populations in the streams sampled. Numbers were generally high in October and early November and decreased to near zero in late December and January. The most important factor appearing to affect population sizes was discharge. Numbers at almost all sites decreased significantly after a rainfall increased discharge.A Principal Components and clustering analysis grouped sites with similar physical parameters in a continuum of low to high order. Sites with low numbers of Cladocera were generally shallow, narrow, and had a loose unconsolidated substrate. Sites with high population numbers were generally deep, wide, and had a stable substrate that accumulated detritus.  相似文献

Report on a collection of cladocera and copepoda from Nepal   总被引:11,自引:11,他引:0
22 species of Cladocera and 14 species of Copepoda are reported, mainly from Kathmandu valley, Central Nepal and some from high-altitude lakes in the Khumbu area, East Nepal. Two species are new to science; neither can, however, be named due to inadequate material. The relation between Macrothrix laticornis (Jurine, 1820), M. spinosa King, 1853 and M. goeldii Richard, 1897 is discussed; M. goeldii is set as synonym to M. spinosa; new morphological criteria, permetting a separation to M. laticornis and M. spinosa, are given. Some biogeographical aspects of the fauna encountered are: 1) among Copepoda two calanoïds of oriental origin and one of supposed palaearctic origin reach Kathmandu valley; all other Copepoda are circumtropical or cosmopolite species; no oriental Cyclopoïda were found; 2) at higher altitudes, no Cyclopoïda were found, and the Calanoïda were endemic species of the palaearctic genus Arctodiaptomus; 3) no oriental Cladocera were found in Kathmandu valley; the majority of species were cosmopolitan, the remainder circumtropical; 4) at high altitudes, endemic species of palaearctic genera exist next to a set of cosmopolitans.Contribution no 21 from the Netherlands Centre for Alpine Biological Research  相似文献

The species richness of the crustacean zooplankton (Cladocera and Copepoda) and Rotifera in the Middle Niger-Sokoto Basin is characterised from 351 samples collected from 109 localities. 26(4) Cladocera, 18(8) Copepoda and 38(8) Rotifera are recorded. Figures in brackets indicate first records of species for Nigeria. Zooplancton associations of the Middle Niger are compared with one of its major tributaries, River Sokoto, and seven of its minor tributaries using similarity indices of Sørensen and Pearsons Product Moment Cluster Coefficients. The Rivers Sokoto and Shagari consistently had the highest similarity of zooplankton associations, for all combinations of rivers studied with r = 0.54 (Cladocera), r = 0.91 (Copepoda) and r = 0.54 (Rotifera). Zooplankton associations of the Middle Niger are weakly correlated with all tributaries studied (r < 0.1). Species composition and hydrology of the River Sokoto Basin are also compared with previous studies in Nigeria. A Principal Component Analysis of species abundance accounted for 54 % of the total variance. It again confirmed the similarity of the branches Sokoto and Shagari. Two groups of species assemblages were identified. The occurrence of Asplanchna sp., Testudinella patina and Microcyclops varicans in one group appears related to microhabitat selection. The other group made up of Brachionus calyciflorus calyciflorus, Macrothrix spinosa, Lecane luna, Thermocyclops decipiens and Metacyclops minutus is suspected to be linked to physico-chemistry. Further studies on the hydrology and physico-chemistry are required for definitive identification of both factors.  相似文献

Ninetysix species of Cladocera, comprising 8 Sididae, 50 Chydoridae, 17 Macrothricidae, 5 Moinidae, 2 Bosminidae, and 14 Daphniidae, occur in tropical Australia. Of this number 38% are cosmopolitan including so-called cosmopolitan species, 13.5% are circumtropical, 13.5% occur as well innear by countries, and 35% are endemic. North Queensland is a major area of speciation. Species richness varies from north to south and from wetter coastal areas to the drier inland. Major factors influencing richness and distribution are the relative proportion of floodplain billabongs in an area, coupled with rainfall reliability. The most common species include Alonella clathratula, Chydorus nr. pubsecens, Macrothrix triserialis, Oxyurella singalensis, Ephemeroporus nr. barroisi, Dadaya macrops, Diaphanosoma sarsi, Ceriodaphnia cornuta, and Dunhevedia crassa.  相似文献

Temporal changes in the population densities of four dominant Cladocera (Moina micrura, Diaphanosoma excisum, Alona guttata and Macrothrix spinosa) were studied in untreated and pesticide treated rice plots over a growing season. M. micrura was the first dominant species to occur in all the plots which were initially devoid of vegetation except for the newly transplanted rice seedlings. With the growth of the rice seedlings and the appearance of aquatic macrophytes, open water ricefields were transformed into vegetated littoral conditions precipitating the disappearance of M. micrura and the appearance of the littoral A. guttata and M. spinosa, and the eurytopic D. excisum. The cladoceran community was affected by spraying of the pesticide FMC35001, an analogue of Furadan®. The response of the four dominant species to the pesticide treatment is discussed.  相似文献

The paper deals with Cladocera and Copepoda species from eight high altitude lakes in the Khumbu area. In all lakes, an endemic known diaptomid of the palearctic genus Arctodiaptomus is found. The dark and large Daphnia tibetana occurs in five of the lakes sampled, characterized by the persistence of the spine in adults (parthenogenetic and ephippial females, males). Apparently, this is an unknown feature of this species. The literature on the diagnostic traits of the different morphs described is reviewed. In addition, a transparent and smaller-sized Daphnia species occurs in two lakes. This is a D. longispina characterized by the absence in adults of the carapace spine (var. aspina Weretschagin, 1911). The presence of these two species is discussed in relation to water transparency, colour, and vertical distribution. Two hypotheses on the evolution of cuticular pigmentation in Daphnia are examined. In addition to these mostly dominant species, a macrothricid also typical of high altitude lakes in the Alps was found (Macrothrix hirsuticornis) together with two cosmopolitan Chydoridae.  相似文献

The freshwater invertebrate fauna (excluding the Protozoa) of Macquarie Island is collated. This includes two Platyhelminthes, two Gastrotricha, three Tardigrada, 41 rotifera, at least eight Nematoda, nine Annelida, and 21 Arthropoda. The latter comprises six species of Anomopoda, two Copepoda, two Ostracoda, an Isopoda, five Acarina, and at least five species of Insecta with aquatic or semi-aquatic larvae. The freshwater Anomopoda (Cladocera) of Macquarie Island are re-evaluated, six species are now recognized and the largest, identified as Daphnia gelida (Brady), is redescribed. The records of both Alona weinecki Studer and Pleuroxus macquariensis Frey are confirmed, while that of Macrothrix hirsuticornis Norman and Brady is accepted with some reservations. Alona quadrangularis (O.F. Müller) is re-instated and records of Chydorus sphaericus O.F. Müller ascribed to C. patagonicus Ekman.  相似文献

We redescribe Macrothrix rosea (females and males) based on material collected in Belgium. We also compare seven populations of Macrothrix `triserialis' from different parts of the world, including a topotypical population of M. triserialis s. str. from Sri Lanka, and males from South India (here first described), relying heavily on the structure of the trunk limbs, beside classical features of morphology. M. rosea and M. triserialis are extremely closely related: males are easily separated, but the identification of females requires micro-characters such as the relative length of the apical segment of the setae natatoriae and the adornment of the first antenna and of the longest swimming seta of the antenna. M. rosea and triserialis together constitute a sub-group of the rosea-group. Macrothrix triserialis-like animals occur in the tropical–subtropical belts of four continents. We compare populations from Asia, South America and Africa, and find differences in microcharacters of the trunk limbs, but cannot decide whether these represent random variation or sound taxonomical differences. One of the basic characters of the Macrothrix rosea-triserialis subgroup is that the setae natatoriae of the postabdomen are implanted on a prominence, the `heel'. Other characters include the fact that the Fryer' forks are adorned with one or two big teeth only, and that the scrapers of trunk limb two form a row of eight without any doublings. Possibly, scraper five, and scraper four to a lesser degree has an enlarged subapical tooth. The exopodite of trunk limb three has four plumose setae, the back and front row of the endopodite six setae and/or receptors, the exopodite of trunk limb four has two setae, and the back row of the endopodite six setae, plus one on the gnathobase. The pre-epipodite of trunk limb five consists of three lobes, the `endopodite' is small, and the `exopodite' is reduced to a single seta. The male postabdomen has a tubular ending, without true end-claws, although a rudiment of an end-claw is seen in M. triserialis. Two new species are described: M. tabrizensis and M. agsensis. A comparison, including the males of Macrothrix triserialis, M. rosea, M. smirnovi and M. tabrizensis confirms the relationship of all these taxa, but also reveals a morphological series in the shape of the postabdomen, from a complete absence of end-claws, over rudiments of a pair of end-claws, to complete endclaws. Absence of end-claws is here considered to represent an evolved character state. Macrothrix smirnovi Ciros & Elías (1987) is less closely related to the rosea-triserialis group, and is considered to form a sub-group in its own right. It shows a short `heel' on the postabdomen, but carries a supplementary seta behind scraper 4 of the endopodite of trunk limb two, and has a male with a postabdomen that closely resembles that of the female. These are primitive characters, which are also found in Wlassicsia, Bunops and Onchobunops and provide a possible phylogenetic link between Macrothrix and these three genera, although the genetic distance between them is considered to be quite large.  相似文献

Contributions to the Cladocera fauna from Papua New Guinea   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Twenty-eight taxa of the Cladocera are identified in collections from Papua New Guinea, 17 being new records for New Guinea, bringing the total number of Cladocera taxa reported for this region to 39. Most of the taxa are circumtropical. One species (Sarsilatona papuana) is endemic to Papua New Guinea and northern Australia. The species list includes two species that are normally listed as Holarctic:Alonella nana andAlona rustica. Widespread genera such asDaphnia, Pleuroxus, Disparalona, Acroperus were strikingly absent from the Papua New Guinean material.  相似文献

The groundwater along the Couze (= river) Pavin in Auvergne, France, yielded four chydorid Cladocera, among which two are known but rare species, while two are new species. One of the new species, Alona phreatica, has reduced eye and ocellus-sizes, but no other adaptations to a groundwater-mode of life are apparent. The likelihood that more phreatic species exist in other parts of Europe and elsewhere is discussed.  相似文献

The morphology of two Neotropical taxa, Macrothrix elegans Sars, 1901 and M. superaculeata (Smirnov, 1982) (Macrothricidae, Anomopoda, Cladocera) was redescribed, based on type materials (a lectotype of M. elegans was selected here), and additional samples from the Americas. Previous conclusion about synonymy of both species was erroneous, because it was based on limited material from South America. M. superaculeata differs from M. elegans in the presence of a sharp spine at postero-dorsal angle of valves; a more fine ring around dorsal head pore; thinner hexagonal reticulation of valves; the presence of setules on basal segment of postabdominal seta; armature of exopod on antenna II, and some features of thoracic limbs. Previously, the discriminative features of the two species were not formulated accurately, and it was a reason of several misidentifications. Actually, M. superaculeata is found only in a limited set of localities from the Amazon basin, while M. elegans is one of the most common anomopod species in all Neotropics, from Argentina to Mexico.  相似文献

Information on the life cycle of individual species is vital to an understanding of their ecology, particularly their distribution. In this investigation, aspects of the Macrothrix flabelligera (Cladocera, Macrothricidae) life cycle were studied in laboratory cultures under controlled conditions. Neonates from parthenogenetic females previously acclimatized were isolated and grown at constant temperature, in a 12-h/12-h light/dark cycle. Organisms were fed with a suspension of Scenedesmus bijugus at a concentration of 105 cells ml–1. Daily measurements of body length and age were made, to obtain the growth rate, size and age of primipara. M. flabelligera had high fecundity rates, producing broods of 13.6 eggs female–1. At 23.0°C, the duration of embryonic and post-embryonic development was 35.9 h and 4.9 days, respectively. The mean longevity was 12.7 days. A length–weight relationship was established and used to convert measured length into weight, in order to plot weight growth curves, as subsidiary information for future secondary production calculations.  相似文献

Thirty-two species of Cladocera and 27 species of free-living copepods were identified in a series of samples collected in 25 localities in and around the Fouta Djalon mountains, West Africa. Beside great richness in numbers of species, the nature of the fauna is noteworthy: at least 20% of the Cladocera and 50% of the copepods are endemic to West Africa. Possible palaeoclimatological reasons for this are discussed. The cladoceran genus Streblocerus is recorded from Africa for the first time. It is an element of northern origin in the fauna of West Africa. More examples of this kind are documented among the Copepoda Cyclopoida and Harpacticoida, but the bulk of the fauna is evidently of tropical origin. In particular, great adaptive radiation is occurring in the local representatives of the genus Tropocyclops. Three new species of Parastenocaris are described; they are the first representatives of this genus found in West Africa.  相似文献

The freshwater zooplankton of Central America and the Caribbean   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
So far mainly sporadic studies have been made on the freshwater zooplankton of this region. We studied material from Costa Rica, Cuba, Bahamas, El Salvador, Haiti and Trinidad and listed unpublished species data from Jamaica. In all 183 species of Rotifera; 104 of Cladocera; 64 Calanoida and Cyclopoida and a few Ostracoda are known from the region which includes Central America, the Caribbean Islands from the Bahamas to Trinidad and the islands off South America and Central America. Records from individual countries are generally low except for Cuban Cladocera and Copepoda. The total number of Copepoda and Cladocera recorded for the whole regions appears to be reasonably comprehensive. Daphnia is rare or absent from the equatorial regions and it is likely that the low species diversity may be due partly to the lack of a range of habitat types.  相似文献

The taxonomy and biogeography of the Cladocera   总被引:14,自引:13,他引:1
For a variety of reasons, including the analysis of a number of taxa having the same names on different continents, we have concluded overwhelmingly that the chydorid Cladocera are not cosmopolitan in distribution but instead are restricted to smaller regions by their specific ecological requirements for habitat type and also by long-term events in earth history. Recent study ofChydorus faviformis and species resembling it indicates there has been no effective exchange of genetic material between North America and South America, nor between Australia and Asia, nor even between China, Malaysia, and India in southern Asia. Moreover, the patterns of distribution are even narrower than this, as in North America, for example, taxa having the same names in the southern states as in the northern states are differentiated at the species level in some instances, possibly in most. Southern species push northward along the Atlantic Coast for varying distances, one species having reached Nova Scotia and Newfoundland probably during the warm interval in mid-Postglacial time. Thus, when species are studied closely to define their morphological limits, cosmopolitanism disappears, and patterns of distribution emerge that are very similar to those of other animals and plants. The ‘species’ that have been claimed to be cosmopolitan are being shown to be groups or complexes of morphologically similar species instead, each member species of which has a much more restricted distribution than the group or complex as a whole. To explain how the different continents can have such similar lists of ‘species’ without intercontinental dispersal of resting eggs occurring almost continuously, we are suggesting plate tectonics and the drifting of continents, either apart or together.  相似文献
