The crucial point regarding non-toxic nodular goiter is the early diagnosis of neoplasm. A neoplasm may be suspected if a nodular goiter has shown recent growth with the concurrent appearance of pressure symptoms, if it is found in a patient under the age of 20, if vocal cord paralysis is present, or emphatically, if a solitary nodule is discovered. Such non-toxic nodular goiters should be promptly removed regardless of the presence or absence of pressure symptoms. If significant pressure symptoms are present, this in itself is an adequate reason for thyroidectomy.  相似文献

This paper studies the L(p) approximation capabilities of sum-of-product (SOPNN) and sigma-pi-sigma (SPSNN) neural networks. It is proved that the set of functions that are generated by the SOPNN with its activation function in $L_{loc};p(\mathcal{R})$ is dense in $L;p(\mathcal{K})$ for any compact set $\mathcal{K}\subset \mathcal{R};N$, if and only if the activation function is not a polynomial almost everywhere. It is also shown that if the activation function of the SPSNN is in ${L_{loc};\infty(\mathcal{R})}$, then the functions generated by the SPSNN are dense in $L;p(\mathcal{K})$ if and only if the activation function is not a constant (a.e.).  相似文献

Taylor''s law (TL) asserts that the variance of the density (individuals per area or volume) of a set of comparable populations is a power-law function of the mean density of those populations. Despite the empirical confirmation of TL in hundreds of species, there is little consensus about why TL is so widely observed and how its estimated parameters should be interpreted. Here, we report that the Lewontin–Cohen (henceforth LC) model of stochastic population dynamics, which has been widely discussed and applied, leads to a spatial TL in the limit of large time and provides an explicit, exact interpretation of its parameters. The exponent of TL exceeds 2 if and only if the LC model is supercritical (growing on average), equals 2 if and only if the LC model is deterministic, and is less than 2 if and only if the LC model is subcritical (declining on average). TL and the LC model describe the spatial variability and the temporal dynamics of populations of trees on long-term plots censused over 75 years at the Black Rock Forest, Cornwall, NY, USA.  相似文献

Contractures develop in sheep atrial trabeculae if Tyrode's solution is rapidly replaced by a solution containing elevated potassium, reduced sodium, or both. Two phases of the contracture can be identified on the basis of differences in physiological behavior: a rapid and transient phase that predominates during the first few seconds of the contracture, and a slowly developed phase that is responsible for the steady level of tension reached later in the contracture. The transient phase is particularly prominent if the muscle is stimulated rapidly before the contracture, and reduced or absent if the muscle is not stimulated or if calcium is not present before the contracture. Recovery of the transient phase after a contracture parallels the recovery of twitches. This transient phase appears to reflect the depolarization-induced release of activator (calcium) from an internal store, possibly the same store that is involved in the normal contraction. The slowly developed tension is dependent on the contracture solution used, and is decreased if the calcium concentration is reduced or if the sodium concentration is increased. It does not depend on conditions before the contracture and does not require time to recover. This phase of the contracture may be due to entry of calcium from the extracellular solution.  相似文献

Learning about statistics is a lot like learning about science: the learning is more meaningful if you can actively explore. This sixth installment of Explorations in Statistics explores correlation, a familiar technique that estimates the magnitude of a straight-line relationship between two variables. Correlation is meaningful only when the two variables are true random variables: for example, if we restrict in some way the variability of one variable, then the magnitude of the correlation will decrease. Correlation cannot help us decide if changes in one variable result in changes in the second variable, if changes in the second variable result in changes in the first variable, or if changes in a third variable result in concurrent changes in the first two variables. Correlation can help provide us with evidence that study of the nature of the relationship between x and y may be warranted in an actual experiment in which one of them is controlled.  相似文献

Background  

Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT) is beneficial to a cell if the acquired gene confers a useful function, but is detrimental if the gene has no function, if it is incompatible with existing genes, or if it is a selfishly replicating mobile element. If the balance of these effects is beneficial on average, we would expect cells to evolve high rates of acceptance of horizontally transferred genes, whereas if it is detrimental, cells should reduce the rate of HGT as far as possible. It has been proposed that the rate of HGT was very high in the early stages of prokaryotic evolution, and hence there were no separate lineages of organisms. Only when the HGT rate began to fall, would lineages begin to emerge with their own distinct sets of genes. Evolution would then become more tree-like. This phenomenon has been called the Darwinian Threshold.  相似文献

We analyze the evolution of aggressive behavior in intersexual conflicts, with a special reference to mate guarding behavior in crustaceans. An analysis of a discrete-strategy game shows that an ESS with only one of the sexes being aggressive prevail if fighting costs or fitness values of winning are asymmetric. Non-aggressiveness of both sexes is stable if fighting behavior is very costly for females and if the cost is at least partly paid independent of the strategy of the opponent. Most interestingly, the solutions of both sexes being aggressive prevails only if both sexes have some probability of winning, and if fighting costs are small. Second, we solve for the expected levels of aggressiveness in a game with continuous strategies. The form of the fighting cost function largely determines the stability of the solution. When fighting cost increases linearly with aggressiveness, mutual aggressiveness fluctuates cyclically instead of stabilizing at an ESS. However, if there is an asymmetry in fitness payoffs, a solution with only the sex having most to lose being aggressive alone is possible. With quadratically increasing fighting costs an ES combination of mutual aggressiveness may exist. It is predicted that fights between the sexes should be hardest when payoffs are symmetric, and that an overt behavioral conflict will always take place as long as there is a fitness loss to each of the sexes if losing the conflict and both sexes have a chance to win. We discuss the models in the context of fights preceding precopulatory guarding, but the models offer a general frame for analyzing any intersexual conflict. Interspecific play, like other interspecific interactions, seems to be rare among free-living primates, despite the fact that polyspecific associations occur quite frequently, especially among forest-living species. A number of instances of play between young guerezas and vervet monkeys are described. This play may be dyadic, individual-group, or group-group and usually involves non-contact types of play. It is suggested that interspecific play is most likely to occur if the ranging patterns of groups of sympatric species remains the same over considerable periods of time, if animals of similar ages are of similar sizes, if social signals associated with play are similar, if play activities are performed in a similar way, and if the temporal organization of play bouts is the same.  相似文献

The repression of aroP expression which is mediated by the TyrR protein with phenylalanine, tyrosine, or tryptophan has been shown to be primarily a direct result of TyrR-mediated activation of a divergent promoter, P3, which directs the RNA polymerase away from promoter P1. Evidence which has been presented to support this conclusion is as follows. Repression of P1 does not occur either in vitro or in vivo if wild-type TyrR protein is substituted by the activation-negative mutant RQ10 (with an R-to-Q change at position 10). Repression of P1 is greatly diminished if the P3 promoter is inactivated or if a 5-bp insertion is made between the P3 promoter and the binding sites for TyrR. Repression is also abolished if the promoter strength of P1 is increased or a putative UP element associated with P3 is altered. Repression of the second promoter, P2, still occurs if the wild-type TyrR protein is substituted with RQ10 or EQ274. The tryptophan-mediated repression of aroP does not involve the TrpR protein.  相似文献

 General dynamic models of systems with two prey and one or two predators are considered. After rescaling the equations so that both prey have the same intrinsic rate of growth, it is shown that there exists a generalist predator that can mediate permanence if and only if there is a population density of a prey at which its per-capita growth rate is positive yet less than its competitor’s invasion rate. In particular, this result implies that if the outcome of competition between the prey is independent of initial conditions, then there exists a generalist predator that mediates permanence. On the other hand, if the outcome of competition is contingent upon initial conditions (i.e., the prey are bistable), then there may not exist a suitable generalist predator. For example, bistable prey modeled by the Ayala–Gilpin (θ-Logistic) equations can be stabilized if and only if θ<1 for one of the prey. It is also shown that two specialist predators always can mediate permanence between bistable prey by creating a repelling heteroclinic cycle consisting of fixed points and limit cycles. Evoked potentials from the major longitudinal nerve cords of Notoplana acticola are potentiated if the preparation is decerebrated or if certain nerves in the ventral submuscular plexus are severed. Concomitant with an increase in amplitude of the response (in some preparations over fourfold) is a decrease in latency of the response and a decrease in the threshold stimulus intensity needed to evoke activity. Evoked activity can also be depressed with moderate increases in stimulus intensity and is induced some distance from the recording site. The depressant effects can be lifted if the brain is bisected, if the contralateral nerve VI is severed close to the brain, and if the commissures between the two nerves VI are cut. The depressant effects of nerves V and VI are additive. Depression and the subsequent lifting of the inhibition occur in Ringer baths containing either normal sea water or equal mixtures of sea water and isotonic MgCl2. The possibility of inhibitory synapses immune to high concentrations of magnesium ions is discussed.  相似文献

Pulmonary cancer can be diagnosed earlier if patients with pulmonary symptoms of chronic type are given x-ray examination early, if patients over 40 years of age have a yearly roentgen examination of the chest regardless of their state of health, and if those with acute pulmonary illness are examined by x-ray within one month of the onset of illness. Observation of a known intrapulmonary lesion of unknown character should never last for more than one month. If it persists after that period, complete investigation, including thoracotomy, should be carried out if necessary to establish an exact diagnosis. A localized intrapulmonary lesion can be removed by segmental resection so that all healthy functioning lung is conserved if the disease is benign. If, after pathological examination, the lesion is shown to be cancerous, more radical resection can be carried out.  相似文献

The problem of determining whether or not a particular parameter, or the entire compartmental system, is structural identifiable can be extremely difficult if the number of unknown parameters and the number of compartments is large. However, the problem can be considerably simplified if the system can be decomposed into smaller subsystems in such a way that a parameter is structural identifiable with respect to the large system if and only if it is structural identifiable with respect to the subsystem in which it is contained. The paper offers sufficient conditions under which the desired decomposition can be achieved. The conditions are expressed in terms of the digraph of the system so that they are not difficult to verify. Illustrative examples are provided in terms of application to lipoprotein kinetics.  相似文献

The statistical properties of sample estimation and bootstrap estimation of phylogenetic variability from a sample of nucleotide sequences are studied by using model trees of three taxa with an outgroup and by assuming a constant rate of nucleotide substitution. The maximum-parsimony method of tree reconstruction is used. An analytic formula is derived for estimating the sequence length that is required if P, the probability of obtaining the true tree from the sampled sequences, is to be equal to or higher than a given value. Bootstrap estimation is formulated as a two-step sampling procedure: (1) sampling of sequences from the evolutionary process and (2) resampling of the original sequence sample. The probability that a bootstrap resampling of an original sequence sample will support the true tree is found to depend on the model tree, the sequence length, and the probability that a randomly chosen nucleotide site is an informative site. When a trifurcating tree is used as the model tree, the probability that one of the three bifurcating trees will appear in > or = 95% of the bootstrap replicates is < 5%, even if the number of bootstrap replicates is only 50; therefore, the probability of accepting an erroneous tree as the true tree is < 5% if that tree appears in > or = 95% of the bootstrap replicates and if more than 50 bootstrap replications are conducted. However, if a particular bifurcating tree is observed in, say, < 75% of the bootstrap replicates, then it cannot be claimed to be better than the trifurcating tree even if > or = 1,000 bootstrap replications are conducted. When a bifurcating tree is used as the model tree, the bootstrap approach tends to overestimate P when the sequences are very short, but it tends to underestimate that probability when the sequences are long. Moreover, simulation results show that, if a tree is accepted as the true tree only if it has appeared in > or = 95% of the bootstrap replicates, then the probability of failing to accept any bifurcating tree can be as large as 58% even when P = 95%, i.e., even when 95% of the samples from the evolutionary process will support the true tree. Thus, if the rate-constancy assumption holds, bootstrapping is a conservative approach for estimating the reliability of an inferred phylogeny for four taxa.  相似文献

The experience accumulated after reconstruction of 157 burned breast patients has led to the development of surgical principles and techniques tailored to this problem. Most important among these principles is that the surgeon recognize and preserve viable breast bud tissue in the debridement phase of the acute burn. Reconstruction should begin when the burned breast envelope is insufficient and restricts normal growth. Best results are obtained if contracture release is complete, if defects are covered by thick split-thickness skin grafts, and if nipple-areola reconstruction is obtained from a normal opposite breast if present. Postoperative management should continue until wounds are mature and should include techniques to prevent contracture recurrence.  相似文献

The properties and limitations of maximum likelihood (ML) inference of genome-wide mutation rates (U) and parameters of distributions of mutation effects are investigated. Mutation parameters are estimated from simulated experiments in which mutations randomly accumulate in inbred lines. ML produces more accurate estimates than the procedure of Bateman and Mukai and is more robust if the data do not conform to the model assumed. Unbiased ML estimates of the mutation effects distribution parameters can be obtained if a value for U can be assumed, but if U is estimated simultaneously with the distribution parameters, likelihood may increase monotonically as a function of U. If the distribution of mutation effects is leptokurtic, the number of mutation events per line is large, or if genotypic values are poorly estimated, only a lower limit for U, an upper limit for the mean mutation effect, and a lower limit for the kurtosis of the distribution can be given. It is argued that such lower (upper) limits are appropriate minima (maxima). Estimates of the mean mutational effect are unbiased but may convey little about the properties of the distribution if it is leptokurtic.  相似文献

Models for the spread of an SIS epidemic among a population consisting of m households, each containing n individuals, are considered and their behaviour is analysed under the practically relevant situation when m is large and n small. A threshold parameter R* is determined. For the stochastic model it is shown that the epidemic has a non-zero probability of taking off if and only if R* > 1, and the extension to unequal household sizes is also considered. For the deterministic model, with households of size 2, it is shown that if R* < or = 1 then the epidemic dies out, whilst if R* > 1 the epidemic settles down to an endemic equilibrium. The usual basic reproductive ratio R0 does not provide a good indicator for the behaviour of these household epidemic models unless the household size n is large.  相似文献
