Preference of isolated or grouped mice for their home cage odor vs. the odor of a strange individual or group was tested by using both connected cages and large arenas. When having been isolated prior to the test, both males and females preferred the odor of other strange individuals of the same sex to their own odor. This tendency was not changed by gonadectomy. In males, it was also confirmed that an isolated male preferred the odor of a dominant male, by which it had been defeated before the test, to its own odor. Further study revealed that they prefer the odor of strange males to clean shavings, while they did not show any particular preference between their own odor and clean shavings. On the other hand, mice which had been housed in groups of 2 or 5 individuals did not show any particular preference between the odor of the familiar individuals and that of strange ones. These results suggest that isolated mice are attracted by the odor of other conspecifics (of the same sex, so far as the present study is concerned), probably by discriminating the odor of other individuals from that of their own. This tendency cannot be attributed to the curiosity for the strange odor when the response of grouped mice is considered. It is probable that the attractiveness of the odor of conspecifics is determined by the social situation of the animal receiving it. Mouse odor seems to enhance group formation by isolated individuals.  相似文献

When high-quality conspecifics resemble heterospecifics, femalesmay be unable to engage effectively in both species recognition(identification of conspecifics) and mate-quality recognition(identification of high-quality mates). Consequently, femalesthat engage primarily in mate-quality recognition may riskheterospecific matings, and females that engage primarily inspecies recognition may risk mating with low-quality mates.I examined the evolutionary consequences of this conflict betweenspecies and mate-quality recognition in spadefoot toads, Speamultiplicata. I compared mate preferences and the fitness consequencesof these preferences in spadefoot toad populations that didand did not overlap with congeners. In non-overlapping populations,S. multiplicata females preferred an extreme call characterresembling that of heterospecifics, and they had more eggsfertilized. In overlapping populations, S. multiplicata females preferred those call characteristics that were closest to thenorm for their population, and they did not receive the benefitof enhanced fertilization success. Thus, S. multiplicata femalesappear to trade off species and mate-quality recognition, suchthat those co-occurring with heterospecifics forgo the benefitsof high-quality matings to ensure conspecific matings. Theseresults suggest that the interaction between species and mate-qualityrecognition may influence mate choice decisions in importantand nonintuitive ways.  相似文献

Specific chemicals in the environment evoke significant changes in the behavior of many aquatic organisms. We studied in the laboratory whether satiated individuals of the hermit crab, Pagurus longicarpus Say 1817, adjust their investigatory behavior towards an empty, optimal gastropod shell according to differences of chemical context. We also explored to what extent shell investigation by a crab in the same hunger state was affected by occupying an inadequately sized shell. Our results confirmed in part previous findings that crabs can discriminate the odor of freshly dead snails from the odor of freshly dead conspecifics. In the presence of the former odor, crabs inhabiting shells of inadequate size were more responsive and active than those in better-fitting shells. To the contrary, regardless of the quality of the inhabited shell, P. longicarpus remained practically motionless when presented with the odor of freshly dead conspecifics, possibly because the risks of incurring in predators would outweigh the benefits of acquiring a new shell. Unexpectedly, we found that crabs in both types of shell quality exhibited nearly the same behavior in control water, while crabs in adequate shells were more responsive in the presence of food odor. Individuals appeared insensitive to the odor of live snails; indeed, only one hermit crab species has been seen removing living snails from their shells. An intriguing result was that water conditioned by the odors of live conspecifics exerted a strong effect on all the individuals by inducing an intense shell investigation. Our study underlines the central role exerted by chemical detection in hermit crabs' behavior and demonstrates the existence of a complex interplay among chemical context, the physiological state of the animal, and the ecological pressures of the habitat.  相似文献

Laboratory-bred juvenile three-spined sticklebacks from 11 sibshipsdid not prefer to shoal with their siblings when they were offeredthe choice between odor from unfamiliar siblings and non-kinin a fluviarium, although the power for finding a significantpreference was very high (0.99). The test fish preferred theside where odor from the heavier shoal was supplied; this shows thatthey could appreciate odor cues from conspecifics in our apparatusand should have preferred their siblings if such a preferenceexists. Our results are compatible with theoretical predictionsbut are at variance with previous findings by other authors.We used independent replicates in a blind protocol with strictrandomization of fish and procedures.  相似文献

Females increase their risk of mating with heterospecifics whenthey prefer the traits of conspecifics that overlap with traitsfound in heterospecifics. Xiphophorus pygmaeus females havea strong preference for larger males, which could lead to femalespreferring to mate with heterospecific males; almost all sympatricX. cortezi males are larger than X. pygmaeus males. In thisstudy, we show that X. pygmaeus females preferred the chemicalcues from conspecifics over those of X. cortezi males. However,preference for the chemical cues of conspecifics could not reversethe preference for larger heterospecific males. Only when femaleswere presented with two species-specific cues (vertical barsand chemical cues) did more females spend more time on averagewith the smaller conspecific males. These results support the"backup signal" hypothesis for the evolution of multiple preferences;together, the two species-specific cues increased the accuracywith which females were able to avoid heterospecific males.In addition, the results suggest that in those situations inwhich the traits of conspecifics overlap with traits found inheterospecifics, females can use the assessment of multiplecues to avoid mating with heterospecifics without compromisingtheir preference for the highest-quality conspecific.  相似文献

The cestode Schistocephalus solidus uses copepods as first andsticklebacks as second intermediate hosts. For transmission,an infected copepod has to be preyed upon by a stickleback.We used copepods of the species Macrocy albidus to test whetherinfected and uninfected copepods differ in their reaction totwo kind of simultaneously presented odors: odors of sticklebacksand odors of sticklebacks and conspecificz. By giving this choice,we attempted to force the copepods to make a trade-off betweenthe benefit of risk dilution and possible predator confusionand the costs of food competition and other disadvantages inducedby conspecifics. Within 1–8 h after last feeding, uninfectedcopepods clearly preferred the odors of conspeciflcs under thechemically simulated threat of predation. This was in contrastto the infected copepods, who tended to avoid the odor of conspecifics.When the time between experiment and last feeding varied, infectedcopepods showed an increas preference for fish water only (oravoided conspecthcs) with increasing hunger level This suggeststhat S. solidus benefits from hunger-induced behavioral changesof its copepod host by influencing its microhabitat selection.The same effect could be found in both sexes; however, it wassignificantly more pronounced in male than in female copepods.We propose several hypotheses that could explain the differencebetween the sexes in their infection-dependent microhabitatselection.  相似文献

Species recognition can often play a key role in female matingpreferences. Far less is known about conspecific mate recognitionfrom the male perspective. In many closely related taxa, femalesexhibit few obvious visual differences and males might haveto attend to chemical cues in mate recognition, a possibilitythat has rarely been explored in vertebrates. Here, we examinemale species recognition via odor cues in the swordtail fish,Xiphophorus birchmanni. In dichotomous choice experiments wefirst tested whether males respond to female odor cues. We foundthat males were attracted to conspecific female odor and thoseof a related allopatric congener, Xiphophorus malinche, overa water control. Males did not, however, respond to the femaleodor of the more distantly related sympatric platyfish, Xiphophorusvariatus. We then gave male X. birchmanni the choice betweenconspecific and heterospecific female stimuli. Males, in thisscenario, significantly preferred the conspecific odor whenthe alternative was platyfish. However, when offered odor cuesof X. malinche, male X. birchmanni actually preferred the heterospecificfemale cue. The complex array of preferences reported here,previously documented only in females, underscores the needto consider the behavior of both sexes in dictating actual matingoutcomes.  相似文献

Chemical signaling is a vital mode of communication for most organisms, including larval amphibians. However, few studies have determined the identity or source of chemical compounds signaling amphibian defensive behaviors, in particular, whether alarm pheromones can be actively secreted from tadpoles signaling danger to conspecifics. Here we exposed tadpoles of the common toad Bufo bufo and common frog Rana temporaria to known cues signaling predation risk and to potential alarm pheromones. In both species, an immediate reduction in swimming activity extending over an hour was caused by chemical cues from the predator Aeshna cyanea (dragonfly larvae) that had been feeding on conspecific tadpoles. However, B. bufo tadpoles did not detectably alter their behavior upon exposure to potential alarm pheromones, neither to their own skin secretions, nor to the abundant predator-defense peptide bradykinin. Thus, chemicals signaling active predation had a stronger effect than general alarm secretions of other common toad tadpoles. This species may invest in a defensive strategy alternative to communication by alarm pheromones, given that Bufonidae are toxic to some predators and not known to produce defensive skin peptides. Comparative behavioral physiology of amphibian alarm responses may elucidate functional trade-offs in pheromone production and the evolution of chemical communication.  相似文献

Salamanders of the Plethodon glutinosus-P. jordani complex were tested for the ability to distinguish conspecific, sex-specific, and heterospecific chemical cues. Male and female P. glutinosus preferred substrates previously occupied by conspecifics over their own, but randomly chose between substrates marked by male or female conspecifics. This suggests that while these salamanders are able to distinguish between their own and conspecific substrate odours, they are unable to identify sex by means of substrate odours. Experiments using an olfactometer showed that male P. jordani, male and female P. glutinosus, and an electrophoretically distinct and non-hybridizing sympatric phenotype in the P. glutinosus complex (here called species A), all preferred female airborne odours over male airborne odours. This demonstrates that these salamanders can identify sex by means of airborne odours. Male P. glutinosus and species A both preferred conspecific female odours over heterospecific female odours in olfactometer experiments. These results suggest an important role for olfaction in the sexual and social behaviour of these salamanders, particularly as a pre-mating isolating mechanism.  相似文献

A number of tropical coral reef fish hold station and display restricted home ranges. If artificially displaced, they will return to their home site. We questioned if marine fish are using the same mechanisms for home site detection as many freshwater fish, that is, by olfactory sensing of chemical signals deposited on the substrate by conspecific fish. Behavioral experiments were conducted on Lizard Island Research Station, Queensland, Australia, in 2001 and 2002. Five-lined cardinalfish (Cheilodipterus quinquelineatus) were tested in groups with split-branded cardinalfish (Apogon compressus) as a reference species and individually against Apogon leptacanthus as well as conspecifics of another reef site. The group tests showed that both species preferred artificial reef sites that had previously been occupied by conspecifics. Individual C. quinquelineatus preferred scent of conspecifics from their own reef site to that from another site. They also preferred the scent released by artificial reefs previously occupied by conspecifics of their reef site to that of similar reefs previously occupied by conspecifics of another reef site. No discrimination between species from the same reef site was obtained in experiments with individual fish. Our data suggest that cardinalfish are keeping station and are homing by use of conspecific olfactory signals.  相似文献

Juvenile coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch, were tested for responses to water conditioned by conspecifics in two-choice tanks. The fish preferred water conditioned by unfamiliar non-siblings over blank water, but preferred water conditioned by both familiar and unfamiliar siblings over non-siblings. These preferences suggest that coho salmon recognize their siblings by matching the phenotype of their tank-mates with unfamiliar conspecifics, and that chemical cues are sufficient for recognition.  相似文献

研究了成年布氏田鼠在10min内,对不同光照周期下(长光照:LD;短光照:SD)陌生雌/雄个体尿液和粪便两种单一个体气味源的气味行为反应,实验发现:所有雌雄被试鼠对LD气味源比SD气味源表现出更多的嗅闻行为。LD和SD被试鼠对同性/异性尿液气味的嗅闻行为没有表现出明显的差别,但LD被试雄鼠对陌生雌鼠粪便的嗅闻频次显多于SD被试雄鼠,从嗅闻行为特征量(嗅闻行为占所有行为的百分比)来看,所有LD和SD被试雌,雄鼠对尿液的嗅 明显多于粪便,除SD粪便气味外,被试鼠对异性气味源的嗅闻明显多于同性,实验结果表明:作为两种个体气味源,尿液和粪便都带有季节性信息,而且是具有性别特性的。异性的个体气味源比同性的个体气味源更具吸引力;长光照动物的个体气味比短光照动物的气味更具吸引力。  相似文献

Little is known about the flow of chemical information fromhigher to lower levels within the animal food chain. However,this information may determine the behavior and distributionof many animals (e.g., that of potential prey) when exposedto direct and indirect cues of predation risk. We used herbivorousspider mites, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Tetranychidae) as amodel to examine the foraging and oviposition decisions thatprey make when exposed to these cues. We conducted laboratorytests to determine if the previous presence of predators (directcues) on leaf discs or the presence of injured conspecifics(indirect cues) alters the distribution of adults and eggs ofT. urticae. When given a choice, after 24 h, fewer adults and eggswere found on leaf discs that had previously contained specialistspider mite predators, Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot (Phytoseiidae),than on discs unexposed to predators. Also, more T. urticaeemigrated from predator-exposed discs than from unexposed discs orfrom those that had previously contained nonpredatory mites(Tyrophagus putrescentiae, Acaridae). Finally, fewer T. urticaeforaged and laid eggs on predator-exposed discs or on thosewith artificially damaged conspecifics (eggs or dead adults)than on discs with intact conspecifics. Tetranychus urticaeprobably recognizes infochemicals (kairomones) from its predatorsor cues from injured spider mites and consequently avoids feedingor ovipositing in areas exposed to these cues. Recognition and avoidanceof kairomones from specialist predators by this prey are likelyto be hereditary, but avoidance of injured conspecifics maybe an adaptation to avoid predators that are not inherentlyrecognized. Phyllomorpha laciniata Vill (Heteroptera, Coreidae) is uniqueamong terrestrial insects in that females glue eggs on the backsof other conspecifics. Egg carrying byP. laciniatamales haspreviously been considered as paternal care. We explored femaleoviposition with respect to previous mating experience of femalesand tested whether sex ratio affects male egg-carrying. Thehypothesis that male egg-carrying is a form of paternal carepredicts that a male should always accept eggs after matingwith a female. However, if male egg-carrying is a form of postcopulatorymate guarding rather than paternal care, egg carrying shouldincrease in the presence of other males. When two couples wereplaced together, females laid eggs on the backs of all individualsenclosed, including the backs of other females. However, whena female was accompanied by 2 males, 22 out of 26 females ovipositedon their mating partner. Thus, sexual competition rather thanpaternity alone, affects a male's eagerness to carry eggs. However,even if males sometimes carry their own eggs, females lay eggson the backs of all conspecifics they can easily acquire. Territorial red‐backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) have been shown to use nonvolatile chemical signals in both territorial defense and to convey a variety of information to conspecifics. We investigated whether or not red‐backed salamanders could determine the sexual identity of conspecifics through volatile chemical signals, and we explored their use in the context of territorial defense. We exposed male and female red‐backed salamanders to four experimental treatments (i.e. filter papers that had been scent marked by male or female conspecifics for 1 and 5 d) and two control treatments (i.e. unscented filter papers for 1 and 5 d tests). The focal salamanders were prevented from physically accessing the scent marked filter papers and, presumably, some of the substrate scent marks had volatile components that were detected and interpreted by the focal salamanders. Both male and female red‐backed salamanders spent significantly more time in threat displays when they were exposed to volatile chemical signals from same‐sex conspecifics than they did toward similar signals from opposite‐sex conspecifics. A similar statistical pattern was observed for the amount of chemosensory sampling exhibited by focal red‐backed salamanders. From these results, we infer that red‐backed salamanders can determine the sexual identity of conspecifics through volatile chemical signals, some of which may be used in territorial defense. Further, such airborne pheromones may influence the spatial organization of salamander territories on the forest floor.  相似文献

Juvenile coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch from the Quinsam, Big Qualicum and Puntledge Rivers, British Columbia, Canada, discriminated between the chemical emanations of similarly aged salmon from their own and another population. However, common rearing during the embryonic, larval and early free-swimming stages rendered families more attractive to each other than they were otherwise. Preference among populations was also influenced by quantity of odour produced by the fish. Some fish, notably the Quinsam River population, appeared to produce greater quantities of attractants than other fish. Finally, the salmon also preferred water conditioned by faeces of members of their own population over blank water and, in one of two experiments, over water conditioned by faeces of non-population members, suggesting that at least some of the odourants mediating intraspecific discriminations are present in faeces. These results confirm earlier studies demonstrating that salmonid populations differ in odours distinguishable by conspecifics but indicate that experiments investigating this phenomenon must be designed carefully to avoid bias owing to differences other than population-specific traits. The role of population recognition in the lives of salmonids is unclear; it might be a manifestation of more general imprinting for homing, of sibling recognition, or it might play a role in mate choice.  相似文献

Abstract Larvae of many anuran taxa display strong behavioural responses to chemical cues, including alarm signals from injured conspecific tadpoles. We exposed tadpoles and metamorphs from an Australian population of the invasive cane toad (Chaunus[Bufo] marinus) to a range of chemical stimuli and quantified their responses both in the laboratory and in the field. Filtered fluids containing scent cues from crushed conspecifics elicited strong avoidance from tadpoles, whereas other cues (e.g. scent of food, of native‐range fish or urodele predators, and thermal stimuli) did not. Apparent aggregation of tadpoles in response to scent cues proved to be an artifact of tank design, and was an indirect consequence of avoidance of those cues. Field trials confirmed that free‐ranging toad tadpoles and metamorphs avoided chemical cues from crushed conspecifics, suggesting that the chemicals inducing this response might provide an opportunity to develop targeted control methods for this invasive species.  相似文献

Many animals use public information (PI) gathered from conspecificsto assess the quality of potential foraging locations. To date,research on this phenomenon has focused almost exclusively onsocial foragers that live in groups and monitor nearby individuals.PI is potentially available to solitary foragers as well, inthe form of cues (such as chemical cues) that persist in theenvironment after conspecifics are no longer present. In thisstudy, I examined the response of a solitary sit-and-wait predator,the timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus), to chemical cuesfrom conspecifics that had recently fed as opposed to thosethat had been deprived of food. Experiments with a T-maze indicatedthat timber rattlesnakes always follow conspecific chemicaltrails out of the maze, regardless of whether or not the individualleaving the trail had recently fed. However, an enclosure choicetest found that individuals are more likely to select ambushsites in areas with chemical cues from conspecifics that hadrecently fed. These results indicate that snakes may use conspecificchemical cues not only to find mates, shelter sites, and hibernaculabut also profitable food patches. Additionally, this study highlightsthe possibility that other solitary foragers may use PI to guidetheir foraging behavior.  相似文献

Urodele amphibians are highly regenerative animals. After partial removal of the brain in urodeles, ependymal cells around the wound surface proliferate, differentiate into neurons and glias and finally regenerate the lost tissue. In contrast to urodeles, this type of brain regeneration is restricted only to the larval stages in anuran amphibians (frogs). In adult frogs, whereas ependymal cells proliferate in response to brain injury, they cannot migrate and close the wound surface, resulting in the failure of regeneration. Therefore frogs, in particular Xenopus, provide us with at least two modes to study brain regeneration. One is to study normal regeneration by using regenerative larvae. In this type of study, the requirement of reconnection between a regenerating brain and sensory neurons was demonstrated. Functional restoration of a regenerated telencephalon was also easily evaluated because Xenopus shows simple responses to the stimulus of a food odor. The other mode is to compare regenerative larvae and non-regenerative adults. By using this mode, it is suggested that there are regeneration-competent cells even in the non-regenerative adult brain, and that immobility of those cells might cause the failure of regeneration. Here we review studies that have led to these conclusions.  相似文献

Ultraviolet radiation has been suggested as a possible contributing cause of amphibian declines around the world. Both laboratory and field studies have demonstrated that exposure to ultraviolet radiation can lead to increased mortality of developing amphibians. Virtually no studies have examined the sub‐lethal effects of ultraviolet on amphibian behavior. In this study, we examine the anti‐predator behavior of three species of amphibians after short‐term exposure to ultraviolet‐B radiation. Toad (Bufo boreas) juveniles that had been exposed to ultraviolet radiation did not respond to chemical extracts from conspecifics and heterospecifics as much as juveniles that had not been exposed. Both newt larvae (Taricha granulosa) that had been exposed to ultraviolet radiation and those that had not been exposed responded to chemical cues from conspecific predators by increasing the amount of time spent in shelter. Frog tadpoles (Rana cascadae) that had been exposed to ultraviolet radiation did not reduce their movement in response to chemical cues from predators as much as tadpoles that had not been exposed. These results indicate that ultraviolet exposure may have important sub‐lethal effects in amphibians that could adversely effect their fitness.  相似文献
