For lek-breeding in ungulate populations to continue, benefitsto males defending lek territories and to females visiting leksmust outweigh the costs. In this study, Kafue lechwe males onleks gained higher mating rates than nonlekking males, a resultof sexually receptive females leaving herds and aggregatingon leks. When the numbers of females on leks were experimentallyreduced, benefits to males decreased, resulting in males graduallyabandoning lek territories. A comparison with a population ofnonlekking, resource-defending black lechwe showed that matingattempts by estrous females in herds were disrupted by harassingmales eight times more frequently in a population of lek-breedingKafue lechwe than in the nonlekking black lechwe. Despite thefact that there were fewer Kafue lechwe females on single territories, harassment of estrous females by males was greater on singleterritories of Kafue lechwe than on leks and greater than onblack lechwe resource territories. Females were also absenton Kafue lechwe single territories for long periods becauseof erratic, widespread movements of compact herds resultingfrom unpredictable distributions of resources. In contrast, black lechwe females were more evenly dispersed over homogeneousresources and for a given territory, females were likely tobe present most of the time. Therefore, unlike black lechwe, male Kafue lechwe find it uneconomical to defend resource territories. Thus, costs to estrous females mating off leks and the absenceof benefits to males attempting to defend resource-based territoriesmay be important cofactors in the appearance of lek-breedingin some ungulate populations  相似文献

One of the diseases of veterinary and public health importance affecting the Kafue lechwe (Kobus leche kafuensis) on the Kafue flats is brucellosis, for which only scant information is available. During the 2003 (October), 2004 (December), and 2008 (July-December) hunting seasons in the Kafue flats, we conducted a study to determine the seroprevalence of Brucella spp. in the Kafue lechwe and to evaluate serologic tests for detection of Brucella spp. antibodies in lechwe. The Rose Bengal Test (RBT), competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA), and fluorescence polarization assay (FPA) were used. A total of 121 Kafue lechwe were hunted for disease investigations in 2003, 2004, and 2008 in the Kafue Flat Game Management Area. Of these, 21.6%, (95% confidence interval [CI]: 14.2-29.1%) had detectable antibodies to Brucella spp. The Kafue lechwe in Lochnivar National Park had higher antibody results than those in Blue Lagoon National Park (odds ratio=3.0; 95% CI: 0.94-9.4). Infection levels were similar in females (21.6%) and males (21.7%). Results were similar among RBT, FPA, cELISA tests, suggesting that these could effectively be used in diagnosing brucellosis in the Kafue lechwe. Our study demonstrates the presence of Brucella infections in the Kafue lechwe in two national parks located in the Kafue flats and further highlights the suitability of serologic assays for testing the Kafue lechwe. Because the Kafue lechwe is the most hunted wildlife species in Zambia, hunters need to be informed of the public health risk of Brucella spp. infection.  相似文献

The diseases of the Kafue lechwe (Kobus leche kafuensis) are reviewed in this paper. Kafue lechwe are an important natural resource for Zambia. Bovine tuberculosis is widespread within the lechwe population and they are host to many parasites, especially the warble Strobiloestrous vanzyli.  相似文献

Background

The Kafue lechwe (Kobus leche Kafuensis), a medium-sized semi-aquatic antelope, is endemic to the Kafue basin of Zambia. The population of the Kafue lechwe has significantly dropped in the last decades leading to its subsequent inclusion on the red list of endangered species. In order to save the remaining population from extinction, it has become increasingly important that the impact of parasite infection and infestation on the Kafue lechwe is investigated.

Findings

Endoparasites accounted for the majority of parasites observed from a study of 40 Kafue lechwe occurring in the the Kafue basin. Amphistoma spp. were present in all animals examined, while Fasciola gigantica had a prevalence rate of 0.525 (95% CI: 0.36 to 0.69) and species of Schistosoma 0.3 (95% CI: 0.15 to 0.45). Among the ectoparasites, Strobiloestrous vanzyli, had a prevalence rate of 0.15 (95% CI: 0.03 to 0.27), while Rhipicephalus appendiculatus had a prevalence of 0.075 (3/40). Our findings indicate that body condition was not influenced by the parasitic infestation in Kafue lechwe. There was no association between sex and parasitic burden (odds ratio = 0.3, 95% CI: 0.8-1.3). However, an association between age and parasitic burden was observed as older animals above 15 years were more likely to get parasite infections than those aged between 1-5 years (odds ratio = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.1-2.4).

Conclusion

Overall, there was no evidence that parasitic infections and infestations adversely affected the lechwe population on the Kafue basin. These findings indicate that ecto- and endo-parasite infestation might not play a significant role in reducing the Kafue lechwe population on the Kafue basin.

The Kafue lechwe population of the Kafue Flats, Zambia, was counted four times within a 26-month period (April 1970-June 1972) by aerial stratified random sampling. The censuses gave good agreement which did not differ statistically. By combining the data for the three most precise surveys, the estimated population is 93 975 with 95% confidence limits of ± 8563 (or ± 9-1%). A method of sampling was used which is based on calculation of animal densities on a linear basis, instead of on densities per unit area. This method has several advantages and is discussed in relation to the problems involved in aerial census. The past and present status of the Kafue lechwe population is reviewed.  相似文献

The study determined heavy metal concentrations and MT1 nucleotide sequence [phylogeny] in liver of the Kafue lechwe. Applicability of MT1 as a biomarker of pollution was assessed. cDNA-encoding sequences for lechwe MT1 were amplified by RT-PCR to characterize the sequence of MT1 which was subjected to BLAST searching at NCBI. Phylogenetic relationships were based on pairwise matrix of sequence divergences calculated by Clustal W. Phylogenetic tree was constructed by NJ method using PHILLIP program. Metals were extracted by acid digestion and concentrations of Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Ni were determined using an AAS. MT1 mRNA expression levels were measured by quantitative comparative real-time RT-PCR. Lechwe MT1 has a length of 183bp, which encode for MT1 proteins of 61AA, which include 20 cysteines. Nucleotide sequence of lechwe MT1 showed identity with sheep MT (97%) and cattle MT1E (97%). Phylogenetic tree revealed that lechwe MT1 was clustered with sheep MT and cattle MT1E. Cu and Ni concentrations and MT1 mRNA expression levels of lechwe from Blue Lagoon were significantly higher than those from Lochinvar (p<0.05). Concentrations of Cd and Cu, Co and Cu, Co and Pb, Ni and Cu, and Ni and Cr were positively correlated. Spearman's rank correlations also showed positive correlations between Cu and Co concentrations and MT mRNA expression. PCA further suggested that MT mRNA expression was related to Zn and Cd concentrations. Hepatic MT1 mRNA expression in lechwe can be used as biomarker of heavy metal pollution.  相似文献

We report 2 cases of Thelazia rhodesii infection in the African buffaloes, Syncerus caffer, in Zambia. African buffalo calves were captured from the livestock and wildlife interface area of the Kafue basin in the dry season of August 2005 for the purpose to translocate to game ranches. At capture, calves (n=48) were examined for the presence of eye infections by gently manipulating the orbital membranes to check for eye-worms in the conjunctival sacs and corneal surfaces. Two (4.3%) were infected and the mean infection burden per infected eye was 5.3 worms (n=3). The mean length of the worms was 16.4 mm (95% CI; 14.7-18.2 mm) and the diameter 0.41 mm (95% CI; 0.38-0.45 mm). The surface cuticle was made of transverse striations which gave the worms a characteristic serrated appearance. Although the calves showed signs of kerato-conjunctivitis, the major pathological change observed was corneal opacity. The calves were kept in quarantine and were examined thrice at 30 days interval. At each interval, they were treated with 200 μg/kg ivermectin, and then translocated to game ranches. Given that the disease has been reported in cattle and Kafue lechwe (Kobus lechwe kafuensis) in the area, there is a need for a comprehensive study which aims at determining the disease dynamics and transmission patterns of thelaziasis between wildlife and livestock in the Kafue basin.  相似文献

The mating system and ecology of black lechwe Kobus leche smithemani was studied in the Bangweulu Basin, northern Zambia. Black lechwe were migratory and concentrated at high density during the wet season on shallow water floodplain and peripheral grassland. Female lechwe were evenly distributed in small groups within the two major habitat types, and density was related to water depth and the quality of vegetation. A proportion of the adult male population defended small, contiguous, resource-based territories of approximately 1–2 ha in size. Particularly high density concentrations of male and female lechwe occurred on small raised areas, which remained dry in comparison to the inundated floodplain. These areas superficially resembled the leks of other reduncine antelope. However, the presence of vegetational resources and the comparatively low levels of agonistic and sexual behaviour suggested that raised areas were clusters of resource-based territories. We suggest that the absence of lek-breeding in this high density population of lechwe is related to the homogeneity of vegetational resources and the corresponding even distribution of females. This may have led to a reduction in male harassment of oestrous females and the increased ability of males to retain oestrous females within single resource territories.  相似文献

Aerial surveys from 1970 onwards suggest a stable Kafue lechwe population of 94 000±9% on the Kafue Flats. The present distribution shows a contraction in dry and wet season range in comparison with 1953/54. Sex ratios of populations on both the North and South banks of the Kafue river do not differ significantly from unity. North bank males have a higher survival rate than South bank males. Survival curves for males and females on the South bank show the same pattern. For both the 1971 and 1972 breeding seasons 73% of South bank females older than 1½ years are expected to have bred successfully. The peaks of conceptions for both seasons are from mid-December to mid-March, suggesting a main lambing period from mid-July until mid-October. Present sex ratio, age structure, reproductive status and the reproductive cycle have been compared with 1961/62 data. Variation in physical condition, based on monthly measurements of the kidney fat percentage, dressing-out percentage and live weight, although influenced by the physiological demands of rut and pregnancy, is correlated with the availability of flood-plain grazing. The lowest values of condition parameters are found during the period of maximum flood, after the end of the rains (April/May), until the receding flood makes flood-plain grazing available, usually in early June. A high level of tuberculosis, lungworm infection and many other pathogens amongst the South bank population are reported. Animals from the North bank are thought to be in better physical condition. The Kafue Gorge dam, completed in 1971, and the Iteshi-teshi dam, at present under construction, will prolong the high flood period in wet years and prevent most flooding in dry years, both of these effects will reduce the carrying capacity of the flood plain for lechwe and a large reduction of the size of the population is expected to result from the operation of the dams.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of reproductive rest during the preceding year on subsequent breeding in captive Iberian hinds. To achieve this, influences were assessed on hind weight at mating, precalving and postcalving weight, hind body condition at mating, hind weight gain during gestation, hind weight loss at calving, total milk yield and calf birth weight during the following breeding season. Sex ratio was examined according to hind age class (sub-adults or adults), precise age, body condition and weight at mating, and reproductive rest. One hundred and twenty seven gestations and their subsequent lactations were analyzed in pluriparous Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) kept in captivity for two years. Sixty four of these gestations (50.4%) took place after no gestation during the preceding year.Hinds that did not gestate the preceding year were heavier at mating and after calving, gained less weight during gestation, and their body condition at mating was better than those hinds that had gestated. Also, calves from hinds that had reproductive rest the preceding year were heavier at birth than the others. Nevertheless, the probability of bearing a male was greater with increasing age, but not with reproductive rest or any other variable. Total milk yield was positively affected by hind postcalving weight and hind age at mating, but not by reproductive rest.In conclusion, reproductive effort during the preceding breeding influenced the subsequent gestation, having an effect on the following variables: hind weight and body condition at mating, hind weight gain during gestation, postcalving weight, and calf birth weight.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine if natural mating affected secondary sex ratio. Data consisting of 642,401 calving records from the Irish national database, during the years 2002-2005, were used in the analysis. Factors affecting the logit of the probability of a male calf being born were determined using multiple regression generalised estimating equations with sire of the calf included as a repeated effect. Month of the year at calving, sex of the previous calf born within dam, breed of service sire, parity of dam and type of mating (i.e., natural or artificial insemination) significantly (P<0.05) affected the likelihood of a male calf being born. Male calves were more likely to be born in the warmer months of the year, when the sex of the previous calf born to the same dam was male, in older cows and when the service sire was a beef breed. No significant interaction between the main effects existed. The odds of a male calf being born, following adjustment for confounding effects, varied from 1.04 to 1.08 (P<0.01) across the years of analysis when artificial insemination was used compared to natural mating. This equates to a 1% unit increase in the probability of a male calf being born following artificial insemination.  相似文献

The composition of the rumen ciliate fauna in 76 Kafue lechwe inhabiting a limited area in Zambia was surveyed and five genera containing 24 species with 16 formae belonging to the family Ophryoscolecidae were identified. Four new species belonging to Diplodiniinae were recognized and described as Diplodinium lochinvarense n. sp., Diplodinium leche n. sp., Diplodinium zambiense n. sp., and Metadinium ossiculi n. sp. In addition, Ostracodinium gracile form fissilaminatum Dogiel, 1932 was found for the second time and described as Metadinium fissilaminatum n. comb. The species composition was fairly unusual. Seven of the species have been found only in African wild antelopes and these species were found more frequently than cosmopolitan species. There was no evidence of isotrichid species. The average density of ciliates per 1 ml of the rumen fluid was 25.7 x 10(4), and the number of ciliate species per head of host was 10.8.  相似文献

1. Freshwater resource managers are increasingly obligated to consider the impacts of large river engineering projects on ecosystem services. We evaluated the effect of altered water regime from the operation of a large dam on the production of the downstream tropical floodplain fishery of the Kafue River, Zambia. We compared the benefits of increased hydropower relative to potentially lost fishery production. 2. We compiled a long‐term data set consisting of experimental gillnet catches, artisanal harvesting effort and monthly river flows for 25 years prior to and 29 years after the 1977 completion of the upstream Itezhi‐Tezhi Dam. As a metric of the flood regime, we calculated a canonical correlation score for each hydrological year before and after dam closure. For the period following dam construction, we used the Muskingum method of flood routing to estimate ‘no‐dam’ flows through the fishery area and downstream hydroelectric turbines at the Kafue Gorge Dam. 3. We compared 16 alternative models of catch per unit effort (CPUE) with and without an effect of water regime on fish population growth rate. Using the two best fitting models, we estimated the total observed fishery harvest and simulated ‘no‐dam’ fisheries harvest and found no significant effect of altered water regime on fishery production. 4. We estimate that the large upstream dam increases downstream hydropower production by about $18 million USD per annum. The reduction in fishery production caused by the altered water regime is not significantly different than zero, although the average reduction amounts to about $2.3 million annually. The total estimated value of harvest ranges from $1.3 million to $56 million annually. 5. Large observed declines in fish abundance over the 54‐year study period are attributed primarily with similarly large increases in total fishing effort in this mostly open‐access artisanal fishery. 6. These results contrast with other examples of the effects of flow alteration on fish, probably because levels of fisheries exploitation on the Kafue River are very high relative to better studied regions on other continents; our focus on the whole fish community; and the unprecedented length of the time series we considered. If the goal is to sustain fishery production, investments in altering flow regime are likely to be less effective than investments to decrease fishing effort.  相似文献

The oribi (Ourebia ourebi, Zimmermann, 1783) is a small species of antelope widely represented across open grasslands of sub‐Saharan Africa. Although largely territorial, differences in group size and mating systems (monogamy/polygamy), have been linked to habitat conditions and population density. At high population densities, additional males are recruited to assist in territorial defence. Other factors which might impact on group size, include predation threat, especially at low population densities. In this study (1995–98), we recorded group sizes of oribi across two contrasting areas (c. 300 km2 each) of Zambia with (Kafue), and without (Bangweulu), large vertebrate predators. A total of 412 groups was recorded across the two sites, with mean sizes of 2.31 (n = 217) at Bangweulu and 2.33 (n = 195) at Kafue. The modal group size was two throughout (range 1–6). Groups were more variable in size and sex composition at Kafue than at Bangweulu, but there was no significant difference in estimates of population density between sites. Mean estimates were 2.02 and 1.90 km?2 for Bangweulu and Kafue, respectively. Sex ratios (males : females) were biased towards females (1 : 1.72 and 1 : 3.55, respectively) at both sites. Adult males were particularly scarce at Kafue. However, values of density and group size, were both unexceptional for the species. Whilst a modal group size of two is consistent with a monogamous mating system, variations in group composition and size were more difficult to explain. Adult females appeared to retain or recruit additional animals to groups, irrespective of the needs of territorial defence. This suggests that vigilance is an important function of groups on large open plains, especially in the presence of predators. By extension, reversed sexual dimorphism in oribi could reflect increased selection for vigilance duties in females. Predators had no apparent effect on population density, but oribi groups were more variable in size and sex composition in their presence. Adult males may be particularly vulnerable to predation when defending territorial borders at low population densities. However, further work is needed to define group dynamics in this species and to identify causes of mortality amongst adult males.  相似文献

Abstract Dopamine has been suggested to be involved in physiological and/or behavioural changes triggered by mating in European honeybee (Apis mellifera) queens but its specific role remains unclear. In the present study, the amounts of dopamine (DA) and its metabolite, N‐acetyldopamine (NADA) are measured, in queens of various ages to clarify the association with locomotor activity. The effects of DA receptor agonist/antagonist drugs on locomotor activity are further investigated. Brain levels of DA and NADA are relatively constant during the period before mating when locomotor activity reportedly increases with age but decreases in 1‐year‐old laying queens with low locomotor activity. Reduced DA and NADA levels are also found in haemolymph of 1–3‐month‐old laying queens. When a DA receptor agonist or antagonist is injected into 6‐day‐old virgin queens, locomotor activity levels increase significantly with 2‐amino‐6,7‐dihydroxy‐1,2,3,4‐tetrahydronaphthalene (agonist), and decreased with cis(Z)‐flupenthixol (antagonist). These results suggest that DA systems are involved in the motor control of honeybee queens, and that the decline in DA levels reduces locomotor activity after mating but increased locomotor activity before mating may be independent of DA levels.  相似文献

The vine mealybug, Planococcus ficus (Signoret) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), is a major pest of vineyards. Here, we tested the efficacy of the mating disruption method against the pest when applied during one or two successive years in high and low infestation levels. Following 1 year of treatment, at low initial infestation levels a shutdown of pheromone traps was observed, along with a significant reduction in infested vines. With initially high infestation levels, a gradual reduction in infested vines was observed, with a trap shutdown seen only after the second year of pheromone application. We discuss the implications of the male mating disruption method for this pest in which the wingless females are aggregated with limited movement among vines, offering multiple mating opportunities for the flying male.  相似文献

Sexual segregation outside the mating season occurs in most species of sexually dimorphic ungulates and has been extensively described in the literature, but the mechanisms causing segregation are still debated. The detailed pattern of sexual segregation throughout the year has rarely been presented for mammals, and no study, to our knowledge, has used latitudinal-related variation in breeding phenology to shed light on the underlying mechanisms. Recent methodological developments have made it possible to quantify separate components of segregation (social, habitat) and activity synchrony in animal groups, but these major improvements have so far been little used. We observed European red deer year round at two widely different latitudes (France and Norway) and tested three different mechanistic hypotheses of segregation related to: (i) predation risk; (ii) body-size-related forage selection; and (iii) activity budget. Habitat segregation peaked during calving in both populations and dropped rapidly after calving. Females with calves were more segregated from males than were females without calves, pointing to a key role of antipredator behaviour even though large predators are absent in France and extremely rare in Norway. However, at both sites individuals also grouped with their own sex within habitat types (i.e. social segregation), and individuals in mixed-sex groups were less synchronized in activity type than individuals in either unisex male or unisex female groups, suggesting that differences in activity budgets are involved. Social segregation peaked during calving and was lowest during the rut (indicating aggregation) in both populations; these activities occurred one month later in the Northern populations, corresponding well with known differences in breeding phenology. We conclude that latitude-dependent breeding phenology shapes the seasonal pattern of sexual segregation and that sexual segregation in ungulates has multiple causes.  相似文献

The Kafue floodplain produces an annual fish yield of about 5000 tonnes. The 1971 closure of the Kafue Gorge Dam downstream from the floodplain modified flooding patterns and created some question as to whether conditions for growth and reproduction of major species would be adversely affected or improved. No obvious changes in the growth of the two major species, Sarotherodon andersoni and S. macrochir , that could be related to the dam were found in samples collected in 1975. Available data concerning year class fluctuations and size distribution indicate that typical high post-impoundment water levels may limit reproduction and year class size of these Sarotherodon species.  相似文献

Harassment on mating pairs by solitary males is usually considered an attempt by the male to (1) take over the female, (2) guard the female against further insemination (when the solitary male has previously copulated with this female), or (3) influence mating duration. Paired males of a seed bug repel harassment on mating pairs by solitary males by firmly grasping females using their legs and/or genital claspers; in this way, mating duration is prolonged. Male fertilization success increases as mating duration increases. Males of the seed bug, Togo hemipterus (Scott) (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae), use seminal substances to inhibit female remating. These substances induce protracted female refractory periods and are transferred to the females in a time‐dependent manner. Consequently, mating duration has important effects on fitness in this species. We observed harassment on T. hemipterus mating pairs by solitary males, and examined conflicts between paired and solitary males over mating duration. None of the solitary males were able to take over a mating female, and this may be due to the unique male genital structure in this species. All conflicts over mating duration resulted in wins by the paired males over the solitary males. Paired males prolonged mating durations, whereas severe harassment on mating pairs by solitary males shortened durations. We show that even though there is no immediate reward for the solitary male (i.e., it is unable to take over the mating female), this harassment behavior may be adaptive.  相似文献
