Sequence analyses and subtyping of Bacillus anthracis strains from Georgia reveal a single distinct lineage (Aust94) that is ecologically established. Phylogeographic analysis and comparisons to a global collection reveals a clade that is mostly restricted to Georgia. Within this clade, many groups are found around the country, however at least one subclade is only found in the eastern part. This pattern suggests that dispersal into and out of Georgia has been rare and despite historical dispersion within the country, for at least for one lineage, current spread is limited.  相似文献

In 2005, high levels of mortality occurred in an outbreak of the gypsy moth population in Georgia. Resting spores typical of entomophthoralean fungi were found within larval cadavers and molecular analyses confirmed that the pathogen was Entomophaga maimaiga. This is the first record of this entomopathogen in Georgia and in this part of Europe.  相似文献

A 350-bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome-b gene was sequenced in the Caucasian salamander, Mertensiella caucasica, representing 10 populations from across its range along the Black Sea coast. Five haplotypes were discovered among 65 fragments analyzed, differing at 2–50 positions. The highest differentiation between haplotypes was observed in animals from the eastern part of the species' range (Borjomi) compared to those from the remainder of the species' range. Randomly amplified nuclear DNA revealed a pattern of spatial genetic variation similar to that of the mitochondrial genome. M. caucasica, as currently known, represents two evolutionary lineages that evolved independently, perhaps since the lower Pliocene. These lineages represent taxa, possibly to be described as species, distributed in the Borjomi area in central Georgia and in southwestern Georgia and northeastern Turkey. The multivariate analysis of morphological data did not reveal significant differences between the taxa. However, substantial morphological differentiation was observed within both lineages, showing parallel patterns in body proportions and coloration patterns. This variation is possibly associated with extant ecological conditions. Salamanders with reduced pigmentation from southwestern Georgia were not genetically distinguishable from neighboring populations.  相似文献

Historical information and archaeological and palaeobotanical findings point Georgia, in the South Caucasus, as a cradle for grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) domestication from its wild form (V. vinifera silvestris Beck.) and subsequent selection and development of varieties with characters suitable for human consumption. The hypothesis of Georgia being a center of domestication, combined with its distance from western countries and the importance of its viticulture and wine production, make Georgian grape germplasm particularly interesting to be investigated under the genetic point of view. Twenty nuclear microsatellite loci were used to genotype 112 Georgian grapevine accessions (V. vinifera sativa Beck.) from germplasm collections and 18 from spontaneous growing plants (V. vinifera silvestris Beck.) found in wild conditions and to compare them to a large international cultivar collection in France. Data analysis shows that Georgian grapevine germplasm has maintained distinctive traits despite arrival of international, foreign varieties and still conserve characteristics of local breeding linked to traditional wine production regions of the country. Results have identified alleles, overall loci, well represented in the Georgian germplasm (cultivated and wild) and absent or poorly represented in other countries, highlighting uniqueness and originality of traits of this viticulture. Moreover, the search for relationships between Georgian and foreign viticulture has evidenced few interesting cases linking the Georgian varieties with Western European ones and with neighboring Caucasian countries, helping to identify the real place of origin in some doubtful cases. In addition, populations or sparse individuals of wild grapevine still preserved in the Georgian natural environments present smaller genetic distances with local cultivars than in other European regions. Principal component analysis (PCA) has also identified special overlapping of the wild compartment with some cultivated varieties. This work provides a highly significant new contribution to applied aspects of Georgian grapevine genetic resources management and use. Uniqueness of the Georgian cultivated grapevine gene pool together with its close relatedness with the wild compartment makes this country a good candidate to address questions regarding domestication and grapevine genetic resource conservation.  相似文献

The genetic diversity of 108 individuals of wild pear species (Pyrus communis subsp. caucasica, P. balansae, P. salicifolia, P. syriaca, P. demetrii, P. bulgarica, P. ketzkhovelii, P. sachokiana) and 35 samples of local and introduced cultivated pears from the country of Georgia were compared to 73 individuals of wild P. communis subsp. caucasica and P. communis subsp. pyraster in the collection of USDA-ARS National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS). Pyrus communis subsp. caucasica from both Georgia and the NPGS, P. communis subsp. pyraster from the NPGS, and P. salicifolia from Georgia were differentiated, based on analysis of eleven microsatellite markers. In addition, accessions of P. communis subsp. caucasica from Georgia were genetically distinct from accessions of the same subspecies in the NPGS collection that originated from other European and Middle Eastern Asian countries. Local pear cultivars in Georgia were genetically similar to P. communis subsp. caucasica and P. balansae growing wild in Georgia suggesting that they may have originated from native pear trees that could serve as unique genetic resources for pear breeding programmes.  相似文献

In this paper I utilize anthropological insights to illuminate how health professionals and patients navigate and negotiate what for them is social about tuberculosis in order to improve treatment outcomes and support patients as human beings. I draw on ethnographic research about the implementation of the DOTS (Directly Observed Therapy, Short Course) approach in Georgia’s National Tuberculosis Program in the wake of the Soviet healthcare system. Georgia is a particularly unique context for exploring these issues given the country’s rich history of medical professionalism and the insistence that the practice of medicine is a moral commitment to society. I argue for critical attention to the ways in which treatment recipients and providers navigate what, for them, is “social” about therapeutic practices and their significance for avoiding biological and social reductionism.  相似文献

The brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys (Stål, 1855) is recorded for the first time from Russia (Khosta and Adler districts of the city of Sochi), Abkhazia (Pitsunda), and Georgia (Khobi Municipality). Outbreaks of H. halys populations were detected in all of these regions in October 2016. More than a hundred specimens congregated for overwintering were collected in Sochi during two days. According to the personal communications of the local people, the species appeared in Sochi not later than in 2013, and in Georgia not later than in 2015. It must have been brought to Sochi from Europe (from Italy) with planting material of ornamental plants for landscaping the XXII Olympic Winter Games. Thereafter it spread to Abkhazia and Georgia. Additional steps to identification of H. halys are provided for the keys to the true bugs of the European part of the former USSR (Kerzhner and Jaczewski, 1964).  相似文献

An underground biomass profile and productivity study involved year-long sampling programs in 18 stands of salt marsh plants in Georgia, Delaware, and Maine. As the result of the monthly or bimonthly marsh coring program three types of underground biomass profiles were found. In the first, the concentration of macro-organic matter (MOM) was uniform with depth; the notable example of this type was creekbank Spartina alterniflora in the southern part of the coast. A second type had a high MOM concentration at the surface which decreased with depth. This, the most common type of profile, was exemplified by Spartina patens, S. alterniflora from the high marsh along the southern coast (Georgia), and creekbank S. alterniflora from the northern part of its range (Maine). The third type of profile was seen where a large rhizome mat developed 15–20 cm below the surface. Spartina cynosuroides and Phragmites communis were typical examples of this type of profile, resulting in a low biomass at the surface, a higher biomass somewhat below the surface, and a low concentration at depth. The annual maxima and minima of MOM biomass were used to calculate annual increments, which can be considered minimum annual production values. These productivity values ranged from a low of 80 g C/m2 for creekhead S. alterniflora in Maine to a high of 1690 g C/m2 for Juncus gerardi in Maine. The mean for all plant stands was 650 g C/m2. Since the average carbon content of the MOM was 35.3%, this corresponds to 1850 g dry weight/m2 per year. As a measure of the relative activity of the total pool of macro-organic material in the soil, turnover times were calculated by dividing the total macro-organic matter by the annual increments. Within the MOM pool there are several components with turnover times varying from days to years. The turnover time for the entire pool ranged from 18 months in two Georgia salt marsh plant stands to 224 months for one in Maine. In the two instances where values for a species could be compared between Maine and Georgia, the turnover time was shorter at the more southerly site. These results can probably be attributed to slower microbial decay rates in the cooler climate. In Georgia and Maine where the turnover values for a species were determined for two elevations, the time was shorter at the lower elevation.  相似文献

Invasive alien plants (IAP) are a threat to biodiversity worldwide. Understanding and anticipating invasions allow for more efficient management. In this regard, predicting potential invasion risks by IAPs is essential to support conservation planning into areas of high conservation value (AHCV) such as sites exhibiting exceptional botanical richness, assemblage of rare, and threatened and/or endemic plant species. Here, we identified AHCV in Georgia, a country showing high plant richness, and assessed the susceptibility of these areas to colonization by IAPs under present and future climatic conditions. We used actual protected areas and areas of high plant endemism (identified using occurrences of 114 Georgian endemic plant species) as proxies for AHCV. Then, we assessed present and future potential distribution of 27 IAPs using species distribution models under four climate change scenarios and stacked single‐species potential distribution into a consensus map representing IAPs richness. We evaluated present and future invasion risks in AHCV using IAPs richness as a metric of susceptibility. We show that the actual protected areas cover only 9.4% of the areas of high plant endemism in Georgia. IAPs are presently located at lower elevations around the large urban centers and in western Georgia. We predict a shift of IAPs toward eastern Georgia and higher altitudes and an increased susceptibility of AHCV to IAPs under future climate change. Our study provides a good baseline for decision makers and stakeholders on where and how resources should be invested in the most efficient way to protect Georgia's high plant richness from IAPs.  相似文献

Thirty-three collections of Gymnoscopelus nicholsi were made between 1976 and 1981 in the South Atlantic using both krill and bottom trawls. In the Antarctic waters the main part of the stock consisted of adult fish 3–7 years old, characterized by a benthopelagic mode of life. Fish of year-class I were observed only in the vicinity of South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands and the Scotia Sea; year-class II individuals were absent from Antarctic samples. In the notal zone of the western South Atlantic, fish aged 1–5 years were found. The existence of only one population in the region is a possible explanation of these findings: this population is divided into a pelagic stock of juveniles and sub-adults which occur in the offshore waters of the western South Atlantic and benthopelagic stocks of adults distributed over the slope regions off Argentina, South Georgia and Antarctic archipelagos.
The computed values of K (von Bertalanffy growth) were 0.48, 0.41 and estimated total annual instantaneous mortality rates (Z) were 0.45, 0.67, and 0.70 for South Georgia, South Shetlands and notal zone of western South Atlantic stocks, respectively.  相似文献

BackgroundPopulation-based cancer survival is a key metric of the effectiveness of health systems in managing cancer. Data from population-based cancer registries are essential for producing reliable and robust cancer survival estimates. Georgia established a national population-based cancer registry on 1 January 2015. This is the first analysis of population-based cancer survival from Georgia.MethodsData were available from the national cancer registry for 16,359 adults who were diagnosed with a cancer of the stomach, colon, rectum, breast (women) or cervix during 2015–2019. We estimated age-specific and age-standardised net survival at one, two and three years after diagnosis for each cancer, by sex.ResultsThe data were of extremely high quality, with less than 2% of data excluded from each dataset. For the patients included in analyses, at least 80% of the tumours were microscopically verified.Age-standardised three-year survival from stomach cancer was 30.6%, similar in men and women. For colon cancer, three-year survival was 60.1%, with survival 4% higher for men than for women. Three-year survival from rectal cancer was similar for men and women, at 54.7%. For women diagnosed with breast cancer, three-year survival was 84.4%, but three-year survival from cervical cancer was only 67.2%.ConclusionEstablishment of a national cancer registry with obligatory cancer registration has enabled the first examination of population-based cancer survival in Georgia. Maintenance of the registry will facilitate continued surveillance of both cancer incidence and survival in the country.  相似文献

Zelkova pollen has been found in Oligocene- to Pleistocene-aged deposits from many parts of Europe and northern Africa, but became extinct in mainland Europe prior to the last glacial maximum. This paper presents some observations on the ecology, pollen productivity and Holocene history of Zelkova carpinifolia to further understanding of Quaternary climatic trends. Georgia is one of the last refuges of this Tertiary relict tree.Based on palynological data from 20 Holocene sediment profiles in Georgia, we have established that Zelkova pollen is almost always accompanied by elevated proportions of thermophilous taxa (Castanea sativa, Quercus hartwissiana, Quercus iberica, and Pterocarya pterocarpa) in pollen spectra. These spectra are associated with phases of climatic amelioration and humidification. Zelkova carpinifolia is characterised by low pollen productivity and is underrepresented in pollen spectra by four-to-five orders of magnitude. Because of this, even single grains of Zelkova pollen may play a significant role in pollen-based climatic reconstructions.Six major climatic optima occurred in Georgia through the course of the Holocene, the longest and warmest of which occurred in the mid-Holocene and reached its maximum between 6000 and 5500 Cal. yr BP. During that period, Zelkova and Castanea forests were widespread. In Western Georgia, the upper tree line was elevated by as much as 300 m above its present-day level. In semiarid Eastern Georgia, the tree line may have been 500–600 m higher. Other climatic optima are seen in late-Holocene pollen spectra dating to 3800–2500 Cal. yr BP and 1350–800 Cal. yr BP.  相似文献

Variability in animal migratory behavior is expected to influence fitness, but few empirical examples demonstrating this relationship exist. The initial marine phase in the migration of juvenile salmon smolts has been identified as a potentially critical life history stage to overall population productivity, yet how fine-scale migration routes may influence survival are unknown. Large-scale acoustic telemetry studies have estimated survival rates of outmigrant Pacific salmon smolts through the Strait of Georgia (SOG) along the British Columbian coastline to the Pacific Ocean, but these data have not been used to identify and characterize fine-scale movements. Data collected on over 850 sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) and steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) smolts detected at an array in the Strait of Georgia in 2004–2008 and 2010–2013 were analyzed to characterize migration routes and link movements to subsequent survival at an array 250 km further along the marine migration pathway. Both species exhibited disproportionate use of the most eastern route in the Strait of Georgia (Malaspina Strait). While many smolts moved across the northern Strait of Georgia acoustic array with no indication of long-term milling or large-scale east-to-west movements, large proportions (20–40% of sockeye and 30–50% of steelhead) exhibited a different behavior, apparently moving in a westward or counterclockwise pattern. Variability in migratory behavior for both species was linked to subsequent survival through the Strait of Georgia. Survival for both species was influenced by initial east-to-west location, and sockeye were further influenced by migration timing and duration of time spent near the northern Strait of Georgia array. Westward movements result in a net transport of smolts from Malaspina Strait to the Strait of Georgia, particularly for steelhead. Counterclockwise movements may be due to the currents in this area during the time of outmigration, and the higher proportion of steelhead smolts exhibiting this counterclockwise behavior may reflect a greater exposure to wind-altered currents for the more surface-oriented steelhead. Our results provide an empirical example of how movements can affect migration survival, for which examples remain rare in movement ecology, confirming that variability in movements themselves are an important part of the migratory process.  相似文献

The poorly known larger benthic foraminifer Balkhania balkhanica Mamontova is reported from the Tirgan Formation (Upper Barremian-Lower Aptian) in the northeastern part of Iran. It was so far only known from Iran (Kopet Dagh and Central Iran), Turkmenistan, and central Afghanistan. Obviously, B. balkhanica possessed a limited distributional area overlapping largely with that of the dasycladalean alga Kopetdagaria sphaerica Maslov (Turkmenistan, Iran, Georgia, Bulgaria, Romania), Conradella bakalovae (Conrad and Peybernès) (Tibet?, Georgia, Bulgaria, Romania), and other taxa. These taxa typify the so-called Carpatho-Pontic algal bioprovince sensu Bucur (2000), which is emended and replaced with the new name Carpatho-Cimmerian bioprovince being part of the former northern (= Eurasian) margin of the Neo-Tethys. The present case study provides a further example that the investigation of the distribution pattern of larger benthic foraminifera, together with dasycladalean green algae, may provide a useful proxy in paleotectonic and paleogeographic reconstructions of the Peri-Tethyan domain.  相似文献

Synopsis Large numbers of the Southern Hemisphere lamprey, Geotria australis, have been found in the regurgitated food of albatrosses breeding on South Georgia. This finding suggests that this lamprey is found in large groups at sea, presumably associated with its host, and can travel very large distances from its natal streams. The length and morphology of the individuals from South Georgia, which almost certainly represent a South American stock, were compared with those of representatives of the immediately pre- and post-marine trophic stages of G. australis caught in Western Australia. No significant differences could be detected either in the number of trunk myomeres or in the number and arrangement of the teeth. The mean length of the animals (± 95% confidence limits) from South Georgia was 45.9 ± 0.90 cm compared with 10.0 ± 0.23 cm and 62.5 ± 0.85 cm in G. australis collected from Western Australia just before they had entered and returned from the sea respectively.  相似文献

Early leaf spot of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), a disease caused by Cercospora arachidicola S. Hori, is responsible for an annual crop loss of several million dollars in the southeastern United States alone. The development of early leaf spot on peanut and subsequent spread of the spores of C. arachidicola relies on favorable weather conditions. Accurate spatio-temporal weather information is crucial for monitoring the progression of favorable conditions and determining the potential threat of the disease. Therefore, the development of a prediction model for mitigating the risk of early leaf spot in peanut production is important. The specific objective of this study was to demonstrate the application of the high-resolution Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for management of early leaf spot in peanut. We coupled high-resolution weather output of the WRF, i.e. relative humidity and temperature, with the Oklahoma peanut leaf spot advisory model in predicting favorable conditions for early leaf spot infection over Georgia in 2007. Results showed a more favorable infection condition in the southeastern coastline of Georgia where the infection threshold were met sooner compared to the southwestern and central part of Georgia where the disease risk was lower. A newly introduced infection threat index indicates that the leaf spot threat threshold was met sooner at Alma, GA, compared to Tifton and Cordele, GA. The short-term prediction of weather parameters and their use in the management of peanut diseases is a viable and promising technique, which could help growers make accurate management decisions, and lower disease impact through optimum timing of fungicide applications.  相似文献

Background

The Republic of Georgia (Sakartvelo in Georgian language) is part of the Caucasus biodiversity hotspot, and human agricultural plant use dates bat at least 6000 years. However, little ethnobiological research has been published from the region since the 1940s. Given the lack of recent research in the region, the present study we report on plant uses in Skartvelo (Republic of Georgia), Caucasus. We hypothesized that, (1) given the long tradition of plant use, and the isolation under Soviet rule, plant use both based on homegardens and wild harvesting would be more pronounced in Georgia than in the wiser region, (2) the Soviet occupation would have had broad influence on plant use, and (3) there would still be incidence of knowledge loss despite wide plant use.

Methods

Fieldwork was conducted in Khevsureti, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Tusheti, Svaneti, and Racha in July–August 2013, July–August 2014, and September–October 2015. Interviews using semi-structured questionnaires were conducted with 170 participants (80 women and 90 men) after obtaining their oral prior informed consent. All interviews were carried out in the participants’ homes and gardens by native speakers of Georgian and its local dialects (Svan, Tush, Khevsur, Psav), or, where participants spoke these as their native language, Armenian, Russian, or Greek.

Results

In the present study we encountered 480 plant species belonging to 249 genera of 95 families being used in the research region. The highest number of species and of unique species were reported from the remote Tusheti-Khevsureti region. Informant consensus and number of use reports were highest for each region in the food and medicinal use categories. Of the 480 plants being used in the research region 282 species were exclusively wild-harvested, 103 were grown in homegardens, and 84 were both grown in gardens and sourced in the wild.

Conclusions

Plant species, and uses, found in our study, both for Georgia in general, as well as for its regions, showed clear relations to the wider Caucasus - Asia Minor - Balkans cultural complex. However, plant use in Georgia was much more diverse than reported in other studies from Eurasia.

Information about the cave invertebrates of Georgia, Caucasus, is summarised, resulting in 43 troglo- and 43 stygobiont taxa reported from 64 caves. Species distribution analyses were conducted for 61 caves harbouring 58 invertebrate taxa, with the majority of caves (39) located in Apkhazeti (north-western Georgia). In 22 caves from central-west Georgia (Samegrelo, Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi regions of west Georgia) 31 taxa are reported. Composition of cave fauna differed strongly between the caves in Apkhazeti and the central-west of Georgia. Only two taxa of the total 86 were shared, resulting in negligible similarity (Sørensen-Dice coefficient Ss=4.8%). Rarefaction indicated an increase in number of species with additional sampling could increase species richness from 58 to 76 for caves in Apkhazeti and from 31 to 69 for caves in central-west Georgia. These findings suggest that the low invertebrate species richness observed in caves of western Georgia is the result of insufficient sampling. A pairwise approach to analysing species co-occurrence showed ten positive spatial associations in 7 out of 86 cave species, all from Kveda Shakurani and Tsebelda caves. The species co-occurring in the same microhabitat require further study to understand their relationships.  相似文献
