Het aantal valincidenten met ouderen kan tot de helft worden teruggebracht wanneer het gebruik van medicijnen zoals slaapmiddelen, kalmeringsmiddelen, antidepressiva of middelen tegen hart- en vaatziekten wordt verminderd of zelfs gestopt. Dit concludeert epidemioloog/ klinisch geriater i.o. Nathalie van der Velde, 32 jr, van het Erasmus MC in haar onderzoek waarop zij 23 mei 2007 promoveerde (proefschrift Falls in old age: pills, the heart and beyond, 139 p, ISBN 978 90 8559 297 2, promotores prof.dr. B.H.Ch. Stricker en prof.dr. H.A.P. Pols). Dertig procent van de 65-plussers in Nederland, oplopend tot vijftig procent van de 85-plussers, valt tenminste éénmaal per jaar en het was reeds bekend dat dit werd beïnvloed door bepaalde medicijnen.     

Revision of the Afrotropical Phaeogenini (Ichneumonidae,Ichneumoninae), with description of a new genus and?twelve new species

We revise the 10 genera and 23 species of the tribe Phaeogenini (Ichneumonidae: Ichneumoninae) known to occur in the Afrotropical region. We describe the following 13 new taxa: Kibalus Rousse, van Noort & Diller, gen. n.; K. toro Rousse, van Noort & Diller, sp. n.; K. mubfs Rousse & van Noort, sp. n.; Arearia oxymoron Rousse & van Noort, sp. n.; Chauvinia nyanga Rousse & van Noort, sp. n.; Dicaelotus asantesana Rousse & van Noort, sp. n.; D. hoerikwaggoensis Rousse & van Noort, sp. n.; D. tablemountainensis Rousse & van Noort, sp. n.; Heterischnus mfongosi Rousse & van Noort, sp. n.; H. mkomazi Rousse & van Noort, sp. n.; Lusius flummox Rousse & van Noort, sp. n.; Tycherus amatola Rousse & van Noort, sp. n.; and T. nardousberg Rousse & van Noort, sp. n. New distribution records: Heterischnus africanus (Heinrich, 1936) from South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda; H. krausi Schönitzer, 1999 from Rwanda; Lusius tenuissimus (Heinrich, 1938) from Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. Plant-herbivore models, where more grass means fewer grazers

Classical theory has led us to believe that where more grazing is available herbivores will inflict heavier pressure on the grass, thus keeping its height low. This approach is hotly debated, although still widely accepted. Based on field data collected, van der Koppel et al. [van der Koppel, J., Huisman, J., van der Wal, R., Olff, H., 1996. Patterns of herbivory along a productivity gradient: an empirical and theoretical investigation. Ecology 77, 736–745] contest the standard plant-herbivore models, arguing that herbivores do not ‘control’ the plant growth entirely, and propose two differential equation models. In this paper we describe briefly how van der Koppel et al. (1996) derive their uncontrolled plant-herbivore interaction models, and then expand on the specific mathematical results cited in their paper to provide a global overview of the dynamics of such systems, for a broad range of parameter values.

A lipid transfer protein that transfers lipid

Very few lipid transfer proteins (LTPs) have been caught in the act of transferring lipids in vivo from a donor membrane to an acceptor membrane. Now, two studies (Halter, D., S. Fed-batch production of 2-heptanone by Fusarium poae

Summary Natural 2-heptanone is a key component of various dairy flavours. The production of this compound from octanoic acid by Fusarium poae is described in this paper. The yield of the fermentation can be considerably increased by stripping the product from the outlet gas by adsorption on an Amberlite XAD-4 column.Offprint requests to: P. H. van der Schaft     

History of diatom research in The Netherlands and Flanders

The history of diatom research in The Netherlands and Flanders is summarized in this report. A. van Leeuwenhoek observed diatoms as early as 1702. The first inventories were made in The Netherlands by R. B. van den Bosch (1846) and in Flanders by J.-J. Kickx (1867). Diatoms were already used in geological research in the second half of the nineteenth century. The Synopsis by H. van Heurck (1880–1885) enabled many twentieth century workers to do applied research for geological and ecological purposes.

Vergelijkend onderzoek naar de hygienische waarde van verschillende desinfectiemethoden van zwemwater II

Samenvatting Voor de toepassing van het chloor-marmer-procédé gelden niet dezelfde vermelde criteria als voor de toepassing van de gewone chloreering. Onder zeer bepaalde en zeer gunstige omstandigheden (b.v. korte turnoverperiode, niet overmatig bezoek, water van daartoe geschikte samenstelling zal het bij het continue systeem kunnen worden toegepast en zal het doel van dit procédé: het vermijden van de prikkelende chloorlucht in overdekte zweminrichtingen, kunnen worden bereikt; de ervaring heeft ons geleerd dat bij gelijke chloordoseering, het chloor-marmer-procédé onder gunstige omstandigheden een verkorting van den desinfectietijd kan opleveren vergeleken bij de toepassing van chloor alleen, terwijl somtijds bovendien de chloortoevoeging kan worden vergroot met evenredig beter desinfectie resultaat.Wat betreft de desinfectie door zilvernitraat, c.q. het electro-katadyn-systeem: in principe bestaat tusschen beiden geen verschil, daar het effect voornamelijk afhankelijk is van de vrije zilverionenconcentratie in het milieu waarin de desinfectie wordt toegepast. De methodiek der desinfectieproeven heeft invloed op den waargenomen desinfectietijd. Hoe kan worden verhinderd dat te veel vrije zilverionen in de agarplaat worden meegenomen en haar hun werking voortzetten, waardoor een te gunstig desinfectie resultaat wordt voorgespiegeld, is nog een punt van onderzoek.Het nadeel van de toepassing van dit procédé bij, zwemwater is hierin gelegen, dat eenerzijds in den regel de concentratie niet kan worden opgedreven omdat daarbij de helderheid van het water wordt beïnvloed, anderzijds de vergrooting van de concentratie geen evenredig betere desinfectie waarborgt.Voor de toepassing bij het periodieke systeem is het procédé onbruikbaar; onder zeer bijzondere omstandigheden, (continu systeem zonder circulate, weinig bezoek, water van geschikte samenstelling) zou misschien een matig effect te bereiken zijn. In dat geval zou het, afgezien van de kosten, voordeelen bieden door afwezigheid van hinder voor zwemmers: bij het gewone continue systeem met circulatie schijnt het ons niet mogelijk resultaten te verkrijgen, die het effect van een juist toegepaste chloreering of behandeling met chlooramine van zwemwater bij benadering evenaren.
