Giuseppe Palomba and the Lotka-Volterra equations

The economics commonly credited with the introduction of the Lotka-Volterra equations into economics to examine cyclical problems is Richard Goodwin (1965). In this paper we show that the Italian economist Giuseppe Palomba had used these equationsmuch earlier (1939), and describe Palomba’s model in detail, pointing out his surprisinglymodern conclusions and suggestions for future work.      

POSSIBLE SOURCE OF SECONDARY INVADING STAPHYLOCOCCI IN MICE EXPOSED TO ACUTE COLD

Bacteriol. 85:345-348. 1963.-In an effort to determine the origin of the staphylococci known to invade the deep tissues (liver, spleen, kidneys, lungs, and heart) of mice exposed continuously to 5 C in individual compartments without bedding, the intestinal tract was freed of these organisms, as judged by absence of growth when fecal suspensions were inoculated into selective media. Substitution of 0.01 n hydrochloric acid for drinking water eliminated staphylococci within a few days, yet the incidence of tissue invasion was unaltered. The coagulase-negative strains normally present in feces and in tissues persisted in tissues even though the intestine was seeded with a coagulase-positive strain by feeding contaminated food. Cultures from the external nares continued unaltered. This suggests that the respiratory tract is a possible origin of the staphylococci found in tissues of the cold-stressed mice.

Crittogame brasiliane,a review of Giuseppe Raddi bryophyte collections in the state of Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

The bryophytes collected by Giuseppe Raddi during his travels in Brazil (1817–1818) housed at Pisa (PI) and Firenze (FI) herbaria were critically studied. The present study provides information about types, nomenclature, taxonomy and geographical distribution for 51 species. One comb. nov. (Taxilejeunea serpyllifolioides (Raddi) Costa (basionym: Jungermannia serpillifolioides Raddi 1822) and two new synonyms (Jungermannia serpillifolioides Raddi 1822 = Taxilejeunea isocalycina (Nees) Steph. 1914; Anthoceros brasiliensis Raddi 1818 = Dendroceros crispus (Sw.) Nees 1846) are made.

Trichodorus elefjohnsoni n. sp. (Nemata: Trichodoridae) from Undisturbed Appalachian Forest

A new species of Trichodoridae, Trichodorus elefjohnsoni, is described from undisturbed regions of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, United States. It resembles T. orientalis De Waele &Hashim, 1984, T. persicus De Waele &Sturhan, 1987, and T. taylori De Waele, Mancini, Roca, '' Lamberti, 1982 in arrangement of ventromedian cervical papillae and posterior preanal supplements, but differs by combinations of the following characteristics: body length 516-731 μm; spicule length 33-50 μm, spicules densely striated, constricted medially; vaginal sclerotizations ovate; one pair of lateral body pores near vulva.

The American scale insect genus Udinia De Lotto (Coccidae)

Udinia, an Ethiopian coccid genus, is redefined and a key is given to the thirteen species now recognised: bruncki sp. n. , catori (Green) comb. n. [= Lecanium subhirsutum Newstead syn. n. ], farquharsoni (Newstead) [= U.exoleta (De Lotto) syn. n. ], glabra De Lotto, ikoyensis sp. n. , lobayana (Balachowsky & Ferrero) comb. n. , newsteadi sp. n. , nigeriensis sp. n. , pattersoni sp. n. , paupercula De Lotto, pterolobina De Lotto, scitula De Lotto, setigera (Newstead). Five species are described as new and three species are redescribed and for these lectotypes are designated. The morphological characters used are discussed and listed and intraspecific variations shown by two of the species are tabulated. The distribution of all the species is recorded on two maps and the literature dealing with associations between ants and Udinia and related coccid genera is briefly reviewed.

鱼类群落生态学研究结果的准确性很大程度上依赖于采样设计的合理性和准确性,正确的采样调查设计不仅可以降低调查成本,其结果也对渔业资源的评估或者管理起到相当重要的作用.本文利用计算机模拟定点采样、简单随机采样和分层采样,比较了3种采样设计的采样效果、相对误差及相对偏差.结果表明： 定点采样设计的采样效果 (采样效果平均值为3.37)要弱于简单随机采样和分层随机采样 (采样效果平均值为0.961).3种采样设计中,分层采样设计在鱼类群落丰富度评估时表现最好,其采样效果、相对误差和相对偏差表现最佳.随着采样数的增加,分层采样设计的采样效果有所下降,但其采样精度提高.
