In many coastal areas of South-East Asia, attempts have been made to revive coastal ecosystem by initiating projects that encourage planting of mangrove trees. Compared to the terrestrial trees, mangrove trees possess a higher carbon fixation capacity. It becomes a very significant option for clean development mechanism (CDM) program. However, a reliable method to estimate CO2 fixation capacity of mangrove trees has not been established. Acknowledging the above fact, we decided to set up an estimation method for the CDM program, using gas exchange analysis to estimate mangrove productivity, we put into consideration the net CO2 fixation of reforested Kandelia candel (5-, 10-, and 15-year-old stand). This was estimated by gas exchange analysis and growth curve analysis. In growth curve analysis, we drew a growth curve of a single stand using data of above- and below-ground biomass. In the gas exchange analysis, we calculated CO2 fixation capacity by (1) measuring respiration rate of each organ of stand and calculating respiratory CO2 emission from above- to below-ground biomass. (2) Measuring the single-leaf photosynthetic rate in response to light intensity and calculating the photosynthetic CO2 absorption. (3) We also developed a model for the diurnal changes in temperature, and monthly averages based on one-day estimation of CO2 absorption and emission, which we corrected by this model in order to estimate the net CO2 fixation capacity in response to temperature. Comparing the biomass accumulation of the two methods constructed for the same forest, the above-ground biomass accumulation of 10-year-old forest (34.3 ton ha−1 yr−1) estimated by gas exchange analysis was closely compared to those of growth curve analysis (26.6 ton ha−1 yr−1), suggesting that the gas exchange analysis was capable of estimating mangrove productivity. The validity of the estimated CO2 fixation capacity by the gas exchange analysis and the growth curve analysis was also discussed.  相似文献

The abundance–impact curve is helpful for understanding and managing the impacts of non‐native species. Abundance–impact curves can have a wide range of shapes (e.g., linear, threshold, sigmoid), each with its own implications for scientific understanding and management. Sometimes, the abundance–impact curve has been viewed as a property of the species, with a single curve for a species. I argue that the abundance–impact curve is determined jointly by a non‐native species and the ecosystem it invades, so that a species may have multiple abundance–impact curves. Models of the impacts of the invasive mussel Dreissena show how a single species can have multiple, noninterchangeable abundance–impact curves. To the extent that ecosystem characteristics determine the abundance–impact curve, abundance–impact curves based on horizontal designs (space‐for‐time substitution) may be misleading and should be used with great caution, it at all. It is important for scientists and managers to correctly specify the abundance–impact curve when considering the impacts of non‐native species. Diverting attention from the invading species to the invaded ecosystem, and especially to the interaction between species and ecosystem, could improve our understanding of how non‐native species affect ecosystems and reduce uncertainty around the effects of management of populations of non‐native species.  相似文献

Methanocaldococcus jannaschii has been notorious as an archaeon in which the replication origins are difficult to identify. Although extensive efforts have been exerted on this issue, the locations of replication origins still remain elusive 7 years after the publication of its complete genome sequence in 1996. Ambiguous results were obtained in identifying the replication origins of M. jannaschii based on all theoretical and experimental approaches. In the genome of M. jannaschii, we found that an ORF (MJ0774), annotated as a hypothetical protein, is a homologue of the Cdc6 protein. The position of the gene is at a global minimum of the x component of the Z curve, i.e., RY disparity curve, which has been used to identify replication origins in other Archaea. In addition, an intergenic region (694,540–695,226 bp) that is between the cdc6 gene and an adjacent ORF shows almost all the characteristics of known replication origins, i.e., it is highly rich in AT composition (80%) and contains multiple copies of repeat elements and AT stretches. Therefore, these lines of evidence strongly suggest that the identified region is a replication origin, which is designated as oriC1. The analysis of the y component of the Z curve, i.e., MK disparity curve, suggests the presence of another replication origin corresponding to one of the peaks in the MK disparity curve at around 1,388 kb of the genome.Communicated by G. Our investigation on the growth of 14 individuals of the great pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis was performed in an aquatic culture at 18°C beginning from the 10th week after hatching until death. It has been demonstrated that the increase in the mollusk mass follows an S-like curve during the whole studied period. Linear growth (conch height) follows a parabolic (convex) curve until the age of 39 weeks. Both weight and linear growth during studied period significantly approximate to the Bertalanffy equation, while the interrelation between mass and conch height corresponds to the allometric equation. The meanings of the coefficients of these equations do not differ significantly in different individuals. At the age of 38 to 39 weeks, all mollusks demonstrate breakage in the curve of linear growth, then followed with abrupt slowing of growth until stopping or even decreasing in size in some cases. Neither the Bertalanffy equation nor the allometric relation describe the linear growth of individuals with ages exceeding 39 weeks.  相似文献

The crustose lichen Rhizocarpon geographicum (L.) DC. comprises yellow-green lichenized areolae which develop and grow on the surface of a non-lichenized fungal hypothallus, the latter extending beyond the edge of the areolae to form a marginal ring. The hypothallus advances very slowly and the considerable longevity of R. geographicum, especially in Arctic and Alpine environments, has been exploited by geologists in dating the exposure age of rock surfaces (lichenometry). This review explores various aspects of the biology of R. geographicum including: (1) structure and symbionts, (2) lichenization, (3) development of areolae, (4) radial growth rates (RaGR), (5) growth physiology, (6) changes in RaGR with thallus size (growth rate-size curve), (7) maturity and senescence, and (8) aspects of ecology. Lichenization occurs when fungal hyphae become associated with a compatible species of the alga Trebouxia, commonly found free-living on the substratum. Similarly, ‘primary’ areolae develop from free-living algal cells trapped by the advancing hypothallus. The shape of the growth rate-size curve of R. geographicum is controversial but may exhibit a phase of decreasing growth in larger thalli. Low rates of translocation of carbohydrate to the hypothallus together with allocation for stress resistance results in very slow RaGR, a low demand for nutrients, hence, the ability of R. geographicum to colonize more extreme environments. Several aspects of the biology of R. geographicum have implications for lichenometry including early development, mortality rates, the shape of the growth-rate size curve, and competition.  相似文献

Literature data for 19 populations from 16 different studies of six species of stream‐dwelling salmonids were analysed to test the hypothesis that density‐dependent growth is stronger at low rather than at high population density. Fifteen of 19 populations showed evidence of a significant decrease in growth rate with increasing density. In 11 of these 15 populations, the pattern of density‐dependent growth was better described by a negative power curve than by a linear regression ( i.e . Akaike Information Criterion, AIC linear −  AIC power > 2), whereas only one population was better described by a linear regression than by a negative power curve; three populations were adequately described by both models ( AIC  < 2). In 10 of the 11 populations that were best described by a negative power curve, most of the decrease in growth rate occurred at population densities <1 fish m−2, when space limitation is unlikely. This analysis provides broad support for the hypothesis that density‐dependent growth in stream salmonids occurs primarily at low population densities, probably due to exploitative competition.  相似文献

Ginsenosides, active ingredients of Panax ginseng, are known to exhibit neuroprotective effects. Large-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ (BKCa) channels are key modulators of cellular excitability of neurons and vascular smooth muscle cells. In the present study, we examined the effects of ginsenosides on rat brain BKCa (rSlo) channel activity heterologously expressed in Xenopus oocytes to elucidate the molecular mechanisms how ginsenoside regulates the BKCa channel activity. Ginsenoside Rg3 (Rg3) enhanced outward BKCa channel currents. The Rg3-enhancement of outward BKCa channel currents was concentration-dependent, voltage-dependent, and reversible. The EC50 was 15.1 ± 3.1 μM. Rg3 actions were not desensitized by repeated treatment. Tetraetylammonium (TEA), a K+ channel blocker, inhibited BKCa channel currents. We examined whether extracellular TEA treatment could alter the Rg3 action and vice versa. TEA caused a rightward shift of the Rg3 concentration-response curve (i.e., much higher concentration of Rg3 is required for the activation of BKCa channel compared to the absence of TEA), while Rg3 caused a rightward shift of the TEA concentration-response curve in wild-type channels. Mutation of the extracellular TEA binding site Y360 to Y360I caused a rightward shift of the TEA concentration-response curve and almost abolished both the Rg3 action and Rg3-induced rightward shift of TEA concentration-response curve. These results indicate that Tyr360 residue of BKCa channel plays an important role in the Rg3-enhancement of BKCa channel currents.  相似文献

Leucine carboxypeptidase (EC 3.4.16) activity in Actinomucor elegans bran koji was investigated via absorbance at 507 nm after stained by Cd-nihydrin solution, with calibration curve A, which was made by a set of known concentration standard leucine, calibration B, which was made by three sets of known concentration standard leucine solutions with the addition of three concentrations inactive crude enzyme extract, and calibration C, which was made by three sets of known concentration standard leucine solutions with the addition of three concentrations crude enzyme extract. The results indicated that application of pure amino acid standard curve was not a suitable way to determine carboxypeptidase in complicated mixture, and it probably led to overestimated carboxypeptidase activity. It was found that addition of crude exact into pure amino acid standard curve had a significant difference from pure amino acid standard curve method (p < 0.05). There was no significant enzyme activity difference (p > 0.05) between addition of active crude exact and addition of inactive crude kind, when the proper dilute multiple was used. It was concluded that the addi-tion of crude enzyme extract to the calibration was needed to eliminate the interference of free amino acids and related compounds presented in crude enzyme extract.  相似文献

Leaf tissue damaging to seedlings can limit their subsequent growth, and the effects may be more extensive. Compensatory photosynthesis responses of the remnant cotyledon and primary leaf of Pharbitis purpurea to clipping and the effect of clipping on seedling growth were evaluated in a pot-cultivated experiment. Three treatments were conducted in the experiment, which were clipped cotyledon (CC), clipped second leaf (CL), and control group (CG). The area, thickness, mass, and longevity of the remaining cotyledon of CC exhibited over-compensatory growth. In contrast, seedlings of CC had under-compensatory growth in seedling height, root length, seedling mass, and root to shoot ratio. However, the traits of remnant cotyledon and seedling in CL treatment exhibited equal-compensatory growth. Net photosynthetic rate of the cotyledon of CC was significantly higher than those of CL and CG treatments, and the diurnal changes in photosynthetic rates showed significantly different patterns which were unimodal curve (CC) and bimodal curve (CL and CG), respectively. There was no significant difference between CL and CG treatment. Net photosynthetic rate of the primary leaf of CL was significantly higher than that of CG treatment. However, the photosynthetic rates of primary leaves of CL and CG treatments showed similar photosynthetic patterns characterized by a bimodal curve. P. purpurea seedlings used a compensatory growth strategy in the remaining cotyledon or the primary leaf to resist leaf loss and minimize any adverse effects.  相似文献

Summary The predictiveness curve shows the population distribution of risk endowed by a marker or risk prediction model. It provides a means for assessing the model's capacity for stratifying the population according to risk. Methods for making inference about the predictiveness curve have been developed using cross‐sectional or cohort data. Here we consider inference based on case–control studies, which are far more common in practice. We investigate the relationship between the ROC curve and the predictiveness curve. Insights about their relationship provide alternative ROC interpretations for the predictiveness curve and for a previously proposed summary index of it. Next the relationship motivates ROC based methods for estimating the predictiveness curve. An important advantage of these methods over previously proposed methods is that they are rank invariant. In addition they provide a way of combining information across populations that have similar ROC curves but varying prevalence of the outcome. We apply the methods to prostate‐specific antigen (PSA), a marker for predicting risk of prostate cancer.  相似文献

We compare the thermoluminescence (TL) behavior of Ce3+ ion‐activated LiCaAlF6 exposed to γ‐rays and a carbon ion beam. The reported phosphor is synthesized using an in‐house precipitation method with varying concentrations of activator ion and is characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and TL. Rietveld refinement is performed to study the structural statistics. The TL glow curve consists of a prominent glow peak at 232°C with three shoulders at 115, 159 and 333°C when exposed to γ‐rays from a 60Co source. When exposed to a C5+ ion beam, the TL glow curve consists of five peaks with peak temperatures near 156, 221, 250, 287 and 330°C, and is found to vary slightly with changing fluence. Glow curve convolution deconvolution (GCCD) functions are applied to the TL curves for complete analysis of the glow curve structure and TL traps. The order of kinetics (b), activation energy (E) and frequency factor are determined using Chen's peak shape method and theoretical curves are drawn using GCCD functions. A track interaction model (TIM) is used to explain the sublinearity/saturation at higher fluences. Ion beam parameters are analyzed using Monte‐Carlo simulation‐based SRIM‐2013 code. The analysis of kinetic curve of redox potential changes (ORP) of aqueous medium in the process of loach embryo population development at 17°C was conducted. The system of critical points defining periodization of the major stages of embryo development was identified on the ORP curve in the time interval up to τ0 using novel methods for processing of nonlinear signals. It was shown that τ0 was a natural periodization parameter of main morphological changes in an embryo known in the developmental biology.  相似文献

The suitability of nano‐structured hydroxyapatite (HAP) for use as a thermoluminescence dosimeter was investigated. HAP samples were synthesized using a hydrolysis method. The formation of nanoparticles was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and average particle size was estimated to be ~30 nm. The glow curve exhibited a peak centered at around 200 °C. The additive dose method was applied and this showed that the thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves follow first‐order kinetics due to the non‐shifting nature of Tm after different doses. The numbers of overlapping peaks and related kinetic parameters were identified from Tm–Tstop through computerized glow curve deconvolution methods. The dependence of the TL responses on radiation dose was studied and a linear dose response up to 1000 Gy was observed for the samples. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The spectral sensitivities of single Limulus median ocellus photoreceptors have been determined from records of receptor potentials obtained using intracellular microelectrodes. One class of receptors, called UV cells (ultraviolet cells), depolarizes to near-UV light and is maximally sensitive at 360 nm; a Dartnall template fits the spectral sensitivity curve. A second class of receptors, called visible cells, depolarizes to visible light; the spectral sensitivity curve is fit by a Dartnall template with λmax at 530 nm. Dark-adapted UV cells are about 2 log units more sensitive than dark-adapted visible cells. UV cells respond with a small hyperpolarization to visible light and the spectral sensitivity curve for this hyperpolarization peaks at 525–550 nm. Visible cells respond with a small hyperpolarization to UV light, and the spectral sensitivity curve for this response peaks at 350–375 nm. Rarely, a double-peaked (360 and 530 nm) spectral sensitivity curve is obtained; two photopigments are involved, as revealed by chromatic adaptation experiments. Thus there may be a small third class of receptor cells containing two photopigments.  相似文献

The curve of the exotoxin penetration measured by the percentage of embryonic mortality is superposed upon the curve of water chorion permeability expressed in terms of time of the embryonic development.

In the present study, polystyrene:europium (III) oxide polymer films at a ratio of 95:5 wt% were prepared using a solution casting technique. These polymeric films were irradiated with 5, 25 and 50 kGy γ‐radiation doses and their thermoluminescence (TL) and thermal properties were studied as a function of radiation dose. Analysis of Fourier transform infrared spectra revealed different modes of vibration and polymer–filler interaction. Reduction of vibrational modes with radiation dose was observed. The TL glow curve intensity was observed to increase with increasing radiation dose and to become broader in the 378 K and 444 K regions. Detrapping of electrons implied by the glow curve was caused by thermally induced macromolecular motion, concurrent with β‐relaxation in polystyrene. The TL glow curve parameters were computed using a glow curve deconvolution method. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis indicated that the glass transition temperature (Tg) increased with increase in dose, suggesting crosslinking of the polymer chain. Scanning electron microscopy analysis evidenced the change in surface morphology due to γ‐irradiation.  相似文献

Scheiner (2003) presented a classification of species–area curves into six types based on the pattern of sampling and how the data are combined to form the curves. Gray et al. (2004) contended that five of those types should be termed ‘species‐accumulation curves’, reserving ‘species–area curve’ for those based on island‐type data. Their proposition contradicts 70 years of usage and confounds curves that are area‐explicit with those that are area‐undefined. In exploring these issues, I highlight additional aspects of species–area and species‐accumulation curves, including the assumption of nesting in Type IV (island) curves, how to convert area‐unspecified curves into area curves, and the effects of the grain of the analysis on the properties of the curve. Further exploration, theoretical development, and dialogue are needed before we will understand all the biology that species–area curves summarize.  相似文献

Species–area curves from islands and other isolates often differ in shape from sample‐area curves generated from mainlands or sections of isolates (or islands), especially at finer scales. We examine two explanations for this difference: (1) the small‐island effect (SIE), which assumes the species–area curve is composed of two distinctly different curve patterns; and (2) a sigmoid or depressed isolate species–area curve with no break‐points (in arithmetic space). We argue that the application of Ockham’s razor – the principle that the simplest, most economical explanation for a hypothesis should be accepted over less parsimonious alternatives – leads to the conclusion that the latter explanation is preferable. We hold that there is no reason to assume the ecological factors or patterns that affect the shapes of isolate (or island) curves cause two distinctly different patterns. This assumption is not required for the alternative, namely that these factors cause a single (though depressed) isolate species–area curve with no break‐points. We conclude that the theory of the small‐island effect, despite its present standing as an accepted general pattern in nature, should be abandoned.  相似文献

Synopsis We described aspects of the life history of the small, cryptic, triplefin blenny, Enneapterygius atriceps, collected from the mouth of Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii. We examined otolith microstructure to construct a von Bertalanffy growth curve, described a length–weight relationship, performed a detailed dietary analysis, used standard histological techniques to determine size at maturity and reproductive patterns, determined batch fecundity, and used an index of gonadal development to examine spawning seasonality. Enneapterygius atriceps is a remarkably short-lived species with low fecundity and a short, well-defined breeding season. Dietary analysis suggests this fish lives and feeds around the bases of dead coral heads. This study generated the first otolith-based growth curve for any member of the Tripterygiidae.  相似文献
