Using multivariate discriminant analyses of various skull length and breadth measurements and some measurements of the ischio-pubic and/or sacro-iliac pelvic bone segments, we remarkably improved the skeleton sex diagnosis on the larger bone samples from Prague, Brno, and Leipzig. According to NOVOTNY, a correct sexing of pelves is possible on the basis of combination of 2 type-morphognostic characters and 4 morphometric ones of the pubis, the ischium, and the greater sciatic notch (incisura ischiadica major). The symphysis region also yields several characters usable in discriminant functions which, in combination with the ventral border of the symphyseal surface, enable the sex diagnosis required by forensic medicine using one part of pelvis only.  相似文献

After methodical preparatory work on the selection of the metric characters and their technical definition, 16 variables were measured on every right hip bone in our standard series (Weisbach series). The discriminant functions performed on our standard series proved to be very sharply discriminant. The methodical foundation gained from the Weisbach series was applied to a control series (Tyrol series), whose sex had not been determined. The application of the discriminant analyses enabled a complete and plausible sex diagnosis to be made.  相似文献

Bones are frequently the only cetacean samples available in the wild and may be useful for determination of sex, physical maturity, body length, and body mass. We analyzed the postnatal morphological development and morphometric characteristics of the cleaned and dried, paired hip bone (os coxae) from 131 bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, (61 females, 70 males; total body length 117–322 cm) ranging in age from neonates to 28 yr, salvaged from Croatian waters of the eastern Adriatic Sea. Adult dolphins exhibited sexual dimorphism in their hip bone morphology and morphometrics: fully‐formed hip bones from males were significantly longer, heavier, and more robust than those from females. Moreover, the fully formed hip bone from males featured a prominent bony tuberosity protruding dorsolaterally from the caudal half that was significantly wider and higher than in females. Morphometric measurements were used to generate classification functions for reliable sex determination (97%). In addition, hip bone length in both sexes correlated tightly with total body length, allowing one measurement to be calculated from the other. Only a single ossification developed in all hip bones although soft tissue attachments and comparative review suggests homological equivalence with the tripartite terrestrial mammal hip bone.  相似文献

We report on the results of applying the so-called lateral angle method for sex determination on skeletal remains. The lateral angle denotes the angle of the internal auditory canal in relation to the medial surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone. The method involves making a small cast of the proximal part of the internal acoustic canal and determining the angle at which the canal opens up to the surface of the petrous bone. The method has the great advantage of utilizing one of the sturdiest bone elements of the human skeleton, and may thus be especially suited for analyses of very fragmented skeletal remains or cremated bones, where the petrous bone may still be readily recognizable. The method was tested using a forensic sample of 113 petrous bones with known sex. Intra- and interobserver testing was also performed. We found a statistically significant difference in angle size between males and females (mean angle size of males, 39.3 degrees ; mean angle size of females, 48.2 degrees ; P < 0.001). There was no bilateral difference in angle size. In blind trials, 83.2% of petrous bones were assigned to the correct sex. We also tested the lateral angle method against an archaeological skeletal sample. True sex was not known for this sample; instead, sexing had been carried out by assessing pelvic and cranial morphology in independent trials. We found a higher concordance between the lateral angle and "pelvic" sex than for lateral angle and "cranial" sex. Finally, we note that subadult sexing may also be possible with this method.  相似文献

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate a new method developed for the measurement of bone mineral density and bone remodelling phenomena after total hip arthroplasty using computer tomography. Computertomography is a radiological technique to examine bone structures in high resolution. Using an extended scale it is possible to investigate bone scans and implants with fewer metal artifacts. For osteodensitometry measurement a special software (IMPact HIP) for the analysis of the data was used. The measured parameters were the overall bone mineral density (mg Calcium-Hydroxyapatite/ml) and the cortical bone structure. A standard scan mode enable to compare the computertomography scans at follow-up. Nineteen total hip arthroplasty patients (20 hips) with a mean age of 58 years (31-70) were operated on using an uncemented titanium alloy stem with a tapered design. The periprosthetic bone was assessed using computertomography-assisted osteodensitometry two weeks and one year after surgery. We observed a decrease of the overall bone mineral density (15%) and of the cortical bone structure (20%) one year after insertion of the stem in the proximal part of the femur. The area corresponds to the Gruen zones 1 and 7. On the other hand, a decrease of mineral density of 5% for the overall bone and of 3% for the cortical bone was found at the level of the tip of the stem, which corresponds to the Gruen zones 3, 4 and 5. Computertomography-assisted osteodensitometry allows to investigate the bone remodelling after total hip arthroplasty by separating the analysis of the overall bone mineral density and of the cortical structure. The present method is a reliable tool for quality-control in total hip arthroplasty.  相似文献

Preliminary investigation has indicated that the use of the ventral arc, subpubic concavity, and medial aspect of the ischio-pubic ramus as sexing criteria allows one to sex the os pubis with an accuracy in excess of 95%. The method described here is simple and objective enough to allow the beginning researcher to sex hip bones accurately while requiring the presence of only a small fragment of the bone.  相似文献

Reliable sex determination is an inevitable prerequisite in prenatal and preimplantation diagnosis of X-linked diseases. We report on an amelogenin-based nested polymerase chain reaction sexing method that simultaneously amplifies distinguishable fragments from both sex chromosomes. Primers matching a largely homologous region on both sex chromosomes are used that encompass a 177-bp deletion on the Y chromosome. Thus amplification results in X- and Y-specific fragments of different sizes that are resolved simply by agarose gel electrophoresis. We applied our sexing strategy to 102 single amniocytes previously subjected to primer extension preamplification. 95 showed successful amplification (93.14% sensitivity). The genotyping of all successful amplifications (from 42 male and 53 female amniocytes) was found to be correct (100% specificity). None of the media blanks showed amplification products (no false positives). Additional amplification of the locus of the most common cystic fibrosis mutation resulted in 95.1% success: 89 amniocytes (87.3%) showed no mutated allele and 7 (6.9%) were found to be heterozygous for the ΔF508 mutation. Children who exhibit gait deviations often present a range of bone deformities, particularly at the proximal femur. Altered gait may affect bone growth and lead to deformities by exerting abnormal stresses on the developing bones. The objective of this study was to calculate variations in the hip joint contact forces with different gait patterns. Muscle and hip joint contact forces of four children with different walking characteristics were calculated using an inverse dynamic analysis and a static optimisation algorithm. Kinematic and kinetic analyses were based on a generic musculoskeletal model scaled down to accommodate the dimensions of each child. Results showed that for all the children with altered gaits both the orientation and magnitude of the hip joint contact force deviated from normal. The child with the most severe gait deviations had hip joint contact forces 30% greater than normal, most likely due to the increase in muscle forces required to sustain his crouched stance. Determining how altered gait affects joint loading may help in planning treatment strategies to preserve correct loading on the bone from a young age.  相似文献

The primary stem stability is an essential factor for success of cementless hip stems. A correct choice of the stem geometry can improve the stem stability and, consequently, increase the life time of a hip implant. In this work, it is proposed a computational model for shape optimization of cementless hip stems. The optimization problem is formulated by the minimization of relative displacement and stress on bone/stem interface using a multi-criteria objective function. Also multiple loads are considered to incorporate several daily life activities. Design variables are parameters that characterize the geometry of selected cross sections, which are subject to geometric constraints to ensure a clinically admissible shape. The stem/bone set is considered a structure in equilibrium with contact conditions on interface. The contact formulation allows us to analyze different lengths of porous coating. The optimization problem is solved numerically by a steepest descent method. The interface stress and relative displacement are obtained solving the contact problem by the finite element method. Numerical examples are presented for a two-dimensional model of a hip stem, however, the formulation is general and can be applied to the three-dimensional case. The model gives indications about the relation between shape, porous coating and prosthesis stability.  相似文献

Background:Noninvasive fetal sex determination by analyzing Y chromosome-specific sequences is very useful in the management of cases related to sex-linked genetic diseases. The aim of this study was to establish a non-invasive fetal sex determination test using Real-Time PCR and specific probes. Methods:The study was a prospective observational cohort study conducted from August 2018 to September 2019. Venous blood samples were collected from 25 Iranian pregnant women at weeks 7 to 25 of gestation. Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) was isolated from the plasma of samples and fetal sex was determined by SRY gene analysis using the Real-Time PCR technique. In the absence of SRY detection, the presence of fetal DNA was investigated using cfDNA treated with BstUI enzyme and PCR for the epigenetic marker RASSF1A.Results:Of the total samples analyzed, 48% were male and 52% female. The RASSF1A assay performed on SRY negative cases also confirmed the presence of cell-free fetal DNA. Genotype results were in full agreement with neonate gender, and the accuracy of noninvasive fetal sex determination was 100%.Conclusion:Fetal sex determination using the strategy applied in this study is noninvasive and highly accurate and can be exploited in the management of sex-linked genetic diseases.Key Words: Cell-free fetal DNA, Fetal sex determination, Noninvasive prenatal diagnosis, Sex-linked genetic diseases, SRY  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To evaluate the factors that determine bone mineral density at axial and appendicular sites in normal men. DESIGN--Measurement of bone mineral density of the radius by single photon absorptiometry and of the lumbar spine and hip by dual photon absorptiometry to assess their relation with various determinants of bone mineral density. Dietary calcium was assessed from a questionnaire validated against a four day dietary record. SETTING--Local community, Sydney, Australia. PATIENTS--48 Men (aged 21-79, median 44) recruited from the local community including 35 male cotwins of twin pairs of differing sex recruited from the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council twin registry for epidemiological studies on determinants of bone mineral density. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Bone mineral density of the axial and appendicular skeleton and its relation to age, anthropometric features, dietary calcium intake, and serum sex hormone concentrations. RESULTS--Dietary calcium intake (g/day) was a significant predictor of bone mineral density of axial bones, explaining 24% and 42% of the variance at the lumbar spine and femoral neck respectively. This effect was independent of weight. In contrast with the axial skeleton, bone mineral density at each forearm site was predicted by weight and an index of free testosterone but not by dietary calcium intake. CONCLUSIONS--Dietary calcium intake has a role in the determination or maintenance, or both, of the axial but not the appendicular skeleton in adult men.  相似文献

In this paper, the sexual differences between mesio-distal and bucco-lingual diameters of deciduous and permanent teeth of an Early Bronze Age population from Franzhausen are presented. Data from a total of 172 (85 male and 87 female) subadult individuals was collected. The presumptive sex determination needed for this investigation could be achieved because of specific burial rites that characterize the Unterw?lbling culture south of the Danube. The averages of both the deciduous and permanent teeth show that female individuals possess altogether teeth of smaller dimensions. The differences are, for a few permanent teeth, statistically highly significant. Using these to calculate discriminant analyses based on differing variable sets, a correct sex assignment was achieved in 81% to 75% of all cases. For the purposes of sexual diagnosis, a function combining only three measurements (MD and BL diameters of upper canine and BL diameter of the first upper molar) was 80% successful.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative contribution of decline in bone density to the increase in risk of hip fracture with age in men and women. DESIGN: Incidence data of hip fracture from the general population were combined with the bone density distribution in a sample from the same population and with a risk estimate of low bone density known from literature. SETTING: The Netherlands. SUBJECTS: All people with a hospital admission for a hip fracture in 1993, and bone density measured in a sample of 581.4 men and women aged 55 years and over in a district of Rotterdam. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: One year cumulative risk of hip fracture by age, sex, and bone density measured at the femoral neck. RESULTS: A quarter of all hip fractures occurred in men. Men reached the same incidence as women at five years older. Controlled for age, the risk of hip fracture by bone density was similar in men and women. The risk of hip fracture increased 13-fold from age 60 to 80; decrease in bone density associated with age contributed 1.9 (95% confidence interval 1.5 to 2.4) in women and 1.6 (1.3 to 1.8) in men. CONCLUSIONS: The risk of hip fracture by age and bone density is similar in men and women. The decrease in bone density associated with age makes a limited contribution to the exponential increase of the risk of hip fracture with age.  相似文献

Most of computer-assisted planning systems need to determine the anatomical axis based on the anterior pelvic plane (APP). We analysed that our new system is more reproducible for determination of APP than previous methods. A pelvic model bone and two subjects suffering from hip osteoarthritis were evaluated. Multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) images were scanned with various rotations by MDCT scanner. The pelvic rotation was calibrated using silhouette images. APP was determined by an optimisation technique. The values of variation of APP caused by pelvic rotation were analysed with statistical analysis. APP determination with calibration and optimisation was most reproducible. The values of variance of APP were within 0.05° in model bone and 0.2° even in patient pelvis. Furthermore, the values of variance of APP with calibration/optimisation were significantly lower in comparison without calibration/optimisation. Both calibration and optimisation are actually required for determination of APP. This system could contribute to the evaluation of hip joint kinematics and computer-assisted surgery.  相似文献

At present, a wide range of molecular sex-typing protocols in wild and domestic animals are available. In pigs, most of these methods are based on PCR amplification of X–Y homologous genes followed by gel electrophoresis which is time-consuming and in some cases expensive. In this paper, we describe, for the first time, a SYBR green-based quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assay using an X-linked gene, the glycoprotein M6B, for genetic sexing of pigs. Taking into account the differences in the glycoprotein M6B gene copy number between genders, we determine the correct sex of 54 pig samples from either diaphragm or hair follicle from different breeds using the 2?ΔΔCT method for relative quantification. Our qPCR assay represents a quick, inexpensive, and reliable tool for sex determination in pigs. This new protocol could be easily adapted to other species in which the sex determination was required.  相似文献
