A rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta), accidentally exposed to vapors of methyl methacrylate for 22 hours was found in a comatose condition. Attempts to revive the animal were unsuccessful. Necropsy revealed a diffusely mottled liver, pulmonary edema, and atelectasis. The thoracic cavities each contained 30 ml of clear yellow fluid. Histopathologic review of the tissues showed central lobular liver necrosis, pulmonary edema, pulmonary emphysema, and atelectasis. Analysis of a blood sample obtained from the monkey 1.5 hours prior to death showed a normal hemogram, but elevated values for serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase, phosphohexose isomerase, blood urea nitrogen, and serum sodium. The pathologic findings, laboratory results, and clinical history suggested a diagnosis of methyl methacrylate poisoning.  相似文献

A 15-year-old female rhesus monkey was observed to have bilaterally thinned and prominently curved corneas. Slit lamp observations, pachymetry, keratometry, and corneoscopy were consistent with a diagnosis of keratoconus, a relatively common corneal dystrophy in humans heretofore not described in a subhuman primate.  相似文献

The effects of inhalation of air and 3 concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) on plasma levels of the norepinephrine metabolite, MHPG, plasma hormones, and behavioral activation were assessed in eight chair-adapted Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). In comparison to air, inhalation of 5%, 7.5% and 10% CO2 for 180 minutes produced significant dose-dependent increases in respiratory rate, plasma MHPG, cortisol, growth hormone and prolactin. CO2 at the 7.5% concentration produced peak changes in behavior at 15, growth hormone at 30, and cortisol and MHPG at 180 minutes without producing changes in prolactin. The lack of previously reported CO2 induced changes in MHPG, growth hormone and prolactin in humans exposed to 7.5% CO2 for only 15 minutes, may therefore relate to the relatively short duration of CO2 exposure.  相似文献

The incidence of pulmonary disease caused by "atypical" mycobacteria has been increasing gradually in the human population since the 1950s. Mycobacterium kansasii and Mycobacterium intracellulare are the two organisms most responsible for this trend. A rhesus monkey was euthanatized and necropsied after reacting positive to mammalian Old Tuberculin on semi-annual testing. Histopathology demonstrated the presence of small numbers of acid fast organisms in pulmonary lesions. Further microbiological testing identified the causative organism as M. kansasii.  相似文献

Sequential examinations were done on the pulmonary cytokinetics and pulmonary lesions in rats after inhalation exposure to (239)PuO(2) aerosols to investigate the pathogenesis of lung tumors. Total cell yields of lavaged bronchoalveolar cells as well as the estimated numbers of pulmonary alveolar macrophages were significantly reduced from 1 to 3 months after exposure but recovered thereafter to the control levels. The proportions of multinucleated or micronucleated pulmonary alveolar macrophages increased significantly in lavaged cells from 1 month, and the increase was sustained up to 18 months after exposure. Both tumor necrosis factor and nitric oxide were shown to be differentially released from stimulated cultures of pulmonary alveolar macrophages during the period from 6 to 18 months after exposure. The labeling indices of alveolar and bronchiolar epithelial cells treated with 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine increased significantly in lungs from 3 months and were sustained up to 18 months after exposure. Histopathological examinations revealed that after the early inflammation, hyperplasia and metaplasia of the lining of the bronchioloalveolar epithelium were predominant from 3 to 6 months, while adenomatous or adenocarcinomatous lesions appeared and developed from 12 months after exposure. The appearance of primary lung tumors, almost all of which were adenomas and adenocarcinomas, was found in the dose range of 1 to 2 Gy from 12 months after exposures. These results indicate that the pathogenetic process initiated by early cellular damage and alterations associated with inflammation is followed by the proliferative and metaplastic lesions of pulmonary epithelium, leading to the appearance and development of pulmonary neoplasms from 1 year after the inhalation exposures in rats that received a minimum lung dose of more than 1 Gy.  相似文献

Disseminated histoplasmosis due to Histoplasma capsulatum was diagnosed in a rhesus monkey inoculated with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). Immunohistochemical staining of tissues for viral core antigens revealed that those macrophages that expressed viral antigen contained few or no fungal organisms, while those that were filled with fungal organisms did not express viral antigen. This is a previously undocumented condition in a SIV-infected macaque, and suggests that SIV infection of individual macrophages is not the cause of macrophage dysfunction in SIV infections.  相似文献

Promotion of lung tumor formation from inhaled 239PuO2 in rats may be associated with aggregation of plutonium particles near bronchioles. The relationship of plutonium particle aggregation in the lung and the development of lung tumors after inhalation of 239PuO2 was studied in 664 life span rats with mean lung doses ranging from 0.35 to 20 Gy. Plutonium particle concentration and aggregation were determined from autoradiographic sections of the left lung lobe. The increase in particles/cm2 and mean number of particles per aggregate up to 20 Gy were directly proportional to lung dose. Aggregates with greater than 25 particles increased linearly with dose from 0.2% at 1.4 Gy to 8.2% at 20 Gy, in a pattern similar to increasing severity of pulmonary fibrosis and incidence of lung tumors. Lung tumor incidence increased from about 6% at 1.4 Gy to 83% at 8 Gy; no further increase in lung tumors was seen at doses greater than 8 Gy. Maximum lung tumor incidence at 8 Gy corresponded to a particle concentration of 130/cm2 and four particles/aggregate with 4% of aggregates having greater than 25 particles. Aggregation of inhaled plutonium particles in clusters of greater than 25 particles resulted in daily doses of only a few centigray to focal tissue regions containing clustered particles, yet these doses appeared sufficient to cause pulmonary fibrosis and promotion of pulmonary carcinogenesis.  相似文献

Villus atrophy involving the proximal small intestine was diagnosed in a rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) at necropsy. A juvenile, male, captive-born monkey exhibited weight loss, hypoalbuminemia, patchy alopecia, eosinophilia, and vomiting. D-xylose absorption was impaired. Contrast radiography revealed thickening of the gastric and intestinal walls, gaseous distension of intestines and a rapid transit rate. There was no clinicopathologic evidence of involvement of organs other than the gastrointestinal tract. The intestinal villus atrophy was similar in distribution and morphology to that of human celiac disease.  相似文献

Abstract: Laparoscopic surgery was performed on a 16 year-old female rhesus monkey presenting with chronic lethargy and inappetence. The procedure revealed a “napkin-ring” stricture located in the ascending large colon. Histologic evaluation of the colonic lesion exhibited large numbers of irregular acini lined by a single layer of well-differentiated neoplastic epithelial cells. Based on the gross and histopathologic findings a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the proximal colon was made.  相似文献

Spontaneous tumors in nonhuman primates are of great importance. A spontaneous pericardial mesothelioma was observed in an 18-year-old female rhesus monkey. Grossly, the visceral pericardium was multifocally irregular and thickened with tan discoloration and was soft in consistency. Histologically, the pericardium contained highly in-folded branching fronds lined by a single layer of cuboidal cells. Tumor invaded into approximately half of the thickness of the atrial and ventricular muscles. Tumor penetration was not observed into the atrial or ventricular cavity. Within the myocardium, neoplastic cells formed glandular structures which were lined by cuboidal to columnar cells. Neoplastic cells were weakly positive with PAS and strongly positive for colloid iron and alcian blue. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells were positive for both vimentin and cytokeratin and negative with CEA and Leu-M1, indicating mesothelial origin. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a spontaneous pericardial mesothelioma in a rhesus monkey.  相似文献

Dosimetric measurements were made in a muscle-equivalent model of an adult rhesus monkey subjected to far-field irradiation at 1.29 GHz. Profiles of microwave-induced heating in the model were obtained at eight locations, and a gradient-layer whole-body calorimeter was used to measure total absorbed energy. Average specific absorption rate (SAR) was calculated both from the calorimeter experiments and from the local temperature measurements. Thermographic imaging techniques were used to qualitatively show the microwave-induced surface heating patterns. For this model the calculated average SAR was 0.155 (W/kg)/(mW/cm2) which, at 1.29 GHs, makes the absorption cross section 84% of the geometric shadow cross section. The SAR is about three times that predicted for a prolate spheroidal model of similar mass. A disproportionally high absorption occured in the legs of the model positioned parallel to the E-polarization because of what is believed to be partial-body resonance.  相似文献

Gene frequency distributions in subdivided populations are affected by migration of individuals between groups. This paper considers the effects of such migration on blood protein allele frequency distributions in social groups of the Cayo Santiago rhesus macaque colony. Gene frequencies for complete social groups and their migrant and natal segments were analyzed at four points within a four year period in the colony's history. Gene frequencies varied between the migrant segments of different groups. Gene frequencies of migrant segments of particular groups also varied substantially with time. Usually, but not always, the presence of migrants in groups reduced the levels of inter-group gene frequency differentiation. We suggest that our findings are explained by a model in which the recruitment of immigrants into social groups is largely random with respect to individual genotypes. Such a model implies that migration contributes to both stochastic and directed changes in gene frequencies in rhesus and similarly substructured populations.  相似文献
