Like invasive macrophytes, some native macrophytes are spreading rapidly with consequences for community structure. There is evidence that the native alga Caulerpa filiformis is spreading along intertidal rocky shores in New South Wales, Australia, seemingly at the expense of native Sargassum spp. We experimentally investigated the role physical disturbance plays in the spread of C. filiformis and its possible consequences for Sargassum spp. Cleared patches within beds of C. filiformis (Caulerpa habitat) or Sargassum spp. (Sargassum habitat) at multiple sites showed that C. filiformis had significantly higher recruitment (via propagules) into its own habitat. The recruitment of Sargassum spp. to Caulerpa habitat was rare, possibly due in part to sediment accretion within Caulerpa habitat. Diversity of newly recruited epibiotic assemblages within Caulerpa habitat was significantly less than in Sargassum habitat. In addition, more C. filiformis than Sargassum spp. recruited to Sargassum habitat at some sites. On common boundaries between these two macroalgae, the vegetative growth of adjacent C. filiformis into cleared patches was significantly higher than for adjacent Sargassum spp. In both experiments, results were largely independent of the size of disturbance (clearing). Lastly, we used PAM fluorometry to show that the photosynthetic condition of Sargassum spp. fronds adjacent to C. filiformis was generally suppressed relative to those distant from C. filiformis. Thus, physical disturbance, combined with invasive traits (e.g. high levels of recruitment and vegetative growth) most likely facilitate the spread of C. filiformis, with the ramifications being lower epibiotic diversity and possibly reduced photosynthetic condition of co-occurring native macrophytes.  相似文献

Disturbance of competitive‐dominant plant and algae canopies often lead to increased diversity of the assemblage. Kelp forests, particularly those of temperate Western Australia, are habitats with high alpha diversity. This study investigated the roles of broad‐scale canopy loss and local scale reef topography on structuring the kelp‐dominated macroalgal forests in Western Australia. Eighteen 314 m2 circular areas were cleared of their Ecklonia radiata canopy and eighteen controls were established across three locations. The patterns of macroalgal recolonisation in replicate clearances were observed over a 34 month period. Macroalgal species richness initially increased after canopy removal with a turf of filamentous and foliose macroalgae dominating cleared areas for up to seven months. A dense Sargassum canopy dominated cleared areas from 11 to 22 months. By 34 months, partial recovery of the kelp canopy into cleared areas had occurred. Some cleared areas did not follow this trajectory but remained dominated by turfing, foliose and filamentous algae. As kelp canopies developed, the initial high species diversity declined but still remained elevated relative to undisturbed controls, even after 34 months. More complex reef topography was associated with greater variability in the algal assemblage between replicate quadrats suggesting colonising algae had a greater choice of microhabitats available to them on topographically complex reefs. Shading by canopies of either Sargassum spp. and E. radiata are proposed to highly influence the abundance of algae through competitive exclusion that is relaxed by disturbance of the canopy. Disturbance of the canopy in E. radiata kelp forests created a mosaic of different patch types (turf, Sargassum‐dominated, kelp‐dominated). These patch types were both transient and stable over the 34 months of this study, and are a potential contemporary process that maintains high species diversity in temperate kelp‐dominated reefs.  相似文献

The seasonal growth rates of three Sargassum species were studied along two reef flats of Teluk Kemang, located at Port Dickson, Malaysia from September 2009 to September 2010. Systematic quadrat and line transects were sampled monthly. Nondestructive sampling was conducted, whereby Sargassum plants were tagged and monitored for a 13-month period. The majority of the tagged Sargassum samples belonged to lower length classes (<200 mm), especially in 0–99 mm (Sargassum polycystum, 64.20 %; Sargassum binderi, 68.29 %; Sargassum siliquosum, 56.80 %). Analysis of the monthly mean thallus length (MTL) revealed a bimodal pattern in growth rates, with two periods of high growth rates (January–February 2010 and June–July 2010) and two periods of higher degenerative rates (April 2010 and September 2010). The highest growth rates were recorded in February 2010 (4.08 mm day?1) for S. siliquosum, and in June for S. polycystum (2.54 mm day?1) and S. binderi (1.89 mm day?1). Redundancy analysis (RDA) was employed to test for the overall correlation between monthly variation in MTL and the environmental parameters measured; S. binderi was correlated with ambient temperature (r = 0.5395), while S. siliquosum was correlated with seawater salinity (r = 0.5419) and ammonia (r = ?0.4603). This study reviews the seasonality of Sargassum species on two reefs of Teluk Kemang and their correlation with the selected environmental parameters.  相似文献

The marine benthic brown algae of the north coast of Papua New Guinea (mainly from Madang province) are documented, based on collections made by the first author, between 1980 and 1990. All records [34 identified taxa (+Sargassum spp.)] are listed with bibliographic, taxonomic, nomenclatural and biogeographical notes. The specimens belonging to the genus Dictyota are identified according to recent species definitions. D. magneana De Clerck et Coppejans is described as new to science. Only some representatives of the genus Sargassum have been identified to species level. The phaeophycean flora of the north coast is very similar to that of the south coast (Port Moresby area); nevertheless some differences can be observed.  相似文献

The Sargassum community consists of a unique and diverse assemblage of symbiotic fauna critical to pelagic food chains. Associated symbionts presumably have adaptations to assist in finding Sargassum. In situ scattered Sargassum patches accumulate as they are pushed toward the shoreline (via wind, waves, currents or tides) and are frequently less than 1 m apart and in depths of 10 cm or less as the patches approach the shoreline Crabs, and other symbiotic fauna, must relocate to another patch that is seaward in direction or likely perish as their current patch will likely become beached. This study investigated sensory cues used for host location and selection by the Sargassum crab, Portunus sayi. Chemical detection trials were conducted with a two-chamber choice apparatus with Sargassum spp. and Thalassia testudinum as habitat source odors. Visual detection trials (devoid of chemical cues) and habitat selection trials were conducted in which crabs were given a choice between hosts. Results showed that P. sayi responded to chemicals from Sargassum spp. Crabs visually located host habitats but did not visually distinguish between different hosts. In host selection trials, crabs selected Sargassum spp. over artificial Sargassum and T. testudinum. These results suggest that crabs isolated from Sargassum likely use chemoreception; within visual proximity of a potential patch, crabs likely use both chemical and visual information.  相似文献

A seven-year study of marked plants and plots in Stipagrostis ciliata (Desf.) de Winter dune grassland, in the arid (<100 mm yr–1) Bushmanland area of the Northern Cape province of South Africa, was designed to test the hypothesis that establishment of ephemeral plants, and recruitment of perennial grasses was dependent upon disturbances that reduced the density of living perennial grass tussocks. In 1989, eight 4 m2 plots were cleared of perennial vegetation by uprooting and removing all plants so as to resemble small-scale disturbances made by burrowing mammals or territorial antelope. The vegetation on the cleared plots and surroundings was monitored until 1996. Initial results supported our hypothesis. In wet years, when ephemeral plants were abundant, their average fresh mass was 2–3 times greater per unit area on the cleared plots than in control plots in adjacent, undisturbed grassland. Many Stipagrostis seedlings established in the cleared plots over the two years following clearing but were rare in adjacent areas among established conspecifics. However, a drought in 1992 (11 mm of rain over 12 months) lead to widespread mortality of the perennial grass, killing 56% (range 22–79%) of established tufts. High densities of Stipagrostis seedlings appeared following the drought-breaking rains in January 1993, both in the disturbed plots and in the surrounding `undisturbed' dune grassland. Ephemeral plants established in large numbers throughout the area during the high rainfall year of 1996 and were generally more numerous in the old disturbances than in control plots. Seven years after clearing the biomass of grass on the cleared plots was approximately 34% of the mass removed from the plots in 1989 whereas in the undisturbed grassland biomass was 66% of 1989 levels. Drought had little long-term effect on community composition, and Stipagrostis ciliata constituted 94–98% of plant community before and after drought. Cleared plots were recolonised by S. ciliata, but the contribution of other grass species increased by 6–9%. Synchronous recruitment following occasional drought-induced mortality can generate even-aged populations of the dominant desert dune grasses.  相似文献

Recruitment of Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Muller) was monitored for four successive years following a mass mortality of this species on a subtidal boulder bottom in St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia. Recently recruited juveniles (1–2 mm diameter) were observed in the fall (September–November) between (1982) and (1984), but not in (1985). Juveniles grew to 6–8 mm diameter at 1-yr post-settlement and 19 mm diameter ((1983) cohort) at 2-yr post-settlement. Individuals > 18 mm diameter had macroscopic gonads in the spring of their third year and spawning probably occurred at 2.75-yr post-settlement. The growth rate of juveniles (3–6 mm initial diameter) maintained in cages with coralline-covered rocks was similar to that of the natural population. Growth and gonad index increased significantly when kelp (Laminaria longicruris (Pylaie)) was added to cages, suggesting that juveniles were food limited in St. Margaret's Bay. Despite an abundance of kelp and other fleshy algae, they remained cryptic under rocks and were not observed grazing on attached plants. The effects of temperature and food supply on juvenile growth and survival were examined in laboratory experiments using factorial designs. Recently-metamorphosed juveniles (from laboratory cultures), maintained at three temperature regimes (5°C, ambient, 16 °C) and two feeding regimes (no added food, coralline algae added), had similar growth rates (over 9 mth) among treatment combinations. However, growth was asymptotic at 16 °C and ambient temperatures, suggesting food limitation. Survival of these juveniles was higher in treatments with coralline algae, but survival was not affected by temperature. Field-collected juveniles (3–6 mm diameter), maintained at three temperature regimes (5°C, ambient, 16 °C) and three feeding regimes (no added food, coralline algae added, and kelp and coralline algae added), grew only in treatments with kelp added as food. In these treatments, growth rates increased with temperature. However, the growth curve at variable ambient temperature regimes was linear, suggesting seasonal acclimation. Survival of the field-collected juveniles was highest in treatments at 5 °C and/or with added kelp.  相似文献

Epibenthic dinoflagellates were monitored monthly over an 18 month period in Guadeloupe and Martinique (Lesser Antilles, Caribbean Sea). These islands are located in the second most affected ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) region of the world. Guadeloupe presented five times more total epibenthic dinoflagellates and two times less abundant Gambierdiscus spp. compared to Martinique, although the area of frequent CFP outbreaks covers Guadeloupe and not Martinique. Results did not show any clear seasonal variations of benthic dinoflagellates abundances. Temperature and salinity were not driving parameters in the evolution of total benthic dinoflagellate abundances. Preferential associations were found between macrophyte species and epibenthic dinoflagellates. The Phaeophyceae Dictyota spp. hosted the highest abundances of total epibenthic dinoflagellates, composed mainly of Ostrepsis and Prorocentrum genera. The seagrass Halophila stipulacea hosted the highest abundances of Gambierdiscus spp. and Sinophysis spp. whilst the highest abundance of Coolia was determined on Galaxaura spp. The pelagic Sargassum spp. hosted the lowest abundances of benthic dinoflagellates including the genus Gambierdiscus.  相似文献

A bioassay was developed to investigate causes of grape replant problems under controlled conditions. Soils were collected from methyl bromide-fumigated and non-fumigated plots at a site cleared from a 65-year-old grape vineyard (Vitis vinifera cv. Thompson seedless) at Parlier, CA. Subsamples of the non-fumigated soil were either left non-treated, subjected to autoclaving (twice 45 min), or heating at 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 or 90 °C for 30 min. Subsequently, the samples were placed in 120-mL pots, planted with rooted hardwood grape cuttings (V. vinifera, cv. Carignane) and placed in a greenhouse or growth chamber. Three months after transplanting, vines from non-treated or 40 °C-treated soil had lower shoot weights and densities of healthy lateral roots than vines from the other treatments. Pythium spp. were isolated from 45 to 55% of the plated root segments from vines grown in non-treated, or soil that had been heated at 40 or 50 °C but were not detected in roots from soil given other treatments. Egg masses of root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne spp., were produced on roots from non-treated or heated at 40 °C soil, but no egg masses were detected on roots of the other treatments. In another test with the same soils, remnant roots from non-fumigated or pre-plant methyl bromide-fumigated soil were extracted and amended to non-fumigated soil, soil from fumigated field plots, soil fumigated in a small container, or autoclaved potting mix. The transfer of old vine roots from non-fumigated field soil resulted in incidence of Pythium spp. on grape assay roots, but there was no measurable effect of the transfer on growth and health of the bioassay plant roots. The results of the bioassays indicate that grape replant problem at the California site had biological causes. The bioassay approach may aid in future determinations of the etiology of grape replant problems.  相似文献

The brown algal genus, Padina, has a worldwide distribution in tropical and subtropical climate zones. Padina individuals are common and sometimes dominant in both the intertidal and shallow subtidal regions associated with coral reefs. We investigated the population structure and recruitment of two populations of Padina boryana at an exposed shore in Sirinart National Park (SNP) and a sheltered shore of Tang Khen Bay (TKB), Phuket Province, Thailand. From September 2005 to August 2006, the number of released spores and the height and radius of fronds were measured monthly. New recruits were recorded and monitored on manipulated permanent plots 0.25 m2. The experiment was carried out monthly over a year. We found Padina recruits 1 month after the plots were cleared at both sites. There was a significant difference in percentage cover by new individuals between the two locations (P < 0.05) and also at the shore levels within the sites. At SNP, the highest recruitment was found in the uppermost zone, while at TKB high recruitment occurred at all shore levels except at 80-100 m from the shore. The factors influencing recruitment of P. boryana include wave motion, competition with other earlier successional species and sediment. The high availability of reproductive spores throughout the year, the successful recruitment and the Dictyerpa stage promote the successful establishment of Padina populations.  相似文献

Recolonisation and succession in a multi-species tropical seagrass meadow was examined by creating gaps (50×50 cm) in the meadow and manipulating the supply of sexual and asexual propagules. Measurements of leaf shoot density and estimates of above-ground biomass were conducted monthly to measure recovery of gaps between September 1995 and November 1997. Measurements of the seeds stored in the sediment (seed bank) and horizontal rhizome growth of colonising species were also conducted to determine their role in the recovery process.Asexual colonisation through horizontal rhizome growth from the surrounding meadow was the main mechanism for colonisation of gaps created in the meadow. The seed bank played no role in recolonisation of cleared plots. Total shoot density and above-ground biomass (all species pooled) of cleared plots recovered asexually to the level of the undisturbed controls in 10 and 7 months, respectively. There was some sexual recruitment into cleared plots where asexual colonisation was prevented but seagrass abundance (shoot density and biomass) did not reach the level of unmanipulated controls. Seagrass species did not appear to form seed banks despite some species being capable of producing long-lived seeds.The species composition of cleared plots remained different to the undisturbed controls throughout the 26-month experiment. Syringodium isoetifolium was a rapid asexual coloniser of disturbed plots and remained at higher abundances than in the control treatments for the duration of the study. S. isoetifolium had the fastest horizontal rhizome growth of species asexually colonising cleared plots (6.9 mm day−1). Halophila ovalis was the most successful sexual coloniser but was displaced by asexually colonising species. H. ovalis was the only species observed to produce fruits during the study.Small disturbances in the meadow led to long-term (>2 years) changes in community composition. This study demonstrated that succession in tropical seagrass communities was not a deterministic process. Variations in recovery observed for different tropical seagrass communities highlighted the importance of understanding life history characteristics of species within individual communities to effectively predict their response to disturbance. A reproductive strategy involving clonal growth and production of long-lived, locally dispersed seeds is suggested which may provide an evolutionary advantage to plants growing in tropical environments subject to temporally unpredictable major disturbances such as cyclones.  相似文献

The colonization of artificially created aggregates of the mussel Mytilus edulis by organisms that inhabit an intertidal sand and mud flat was studied in a field experiment. The sediment of 40 experimental plots was cleared of macrofauna. Thirty of these plots were covered with fishing nets, on which either live mussels (ten plots, type M) or mussel dummies (ten plots, type D) were placed; on ten plots, the nets were left empty (type Z). The remaining ten plots without nets but with a cleared surface (type E) were the control. For comparison, samples were taken from the ambient intact community. After 16 days of exposure, the community on the plots differed from the ambient one. In the E-Z-D-M series, only 7 out of 29 taxa that were found in the samples differed significantly in abundance. Chironomid larvae, adults, and spat of M. edulis and Mya arenaria were most abundant on the plots with a hard substrate (Z, D, M). Adult Jaera sp., Oligochaeta, Littorina saxatilis, and Nemertea were more abundant on the type M plots. The abundance of spat of Macoma balthica and Hydrobia ulvae did not differ significantly. The results indicate that the biological activity of mussels M. edulis in dense assemblages facilitated immigration of adult animals of other species. The M. edulis aggregates either had no influence on the spat of mollusks or they attracted it as a hard substrate for settlement.  相似文献

About fifty individuals of four dominant large brown algae were collected by random sampling at monthly intervals using SCUBA. Size frequencies of Sargassum confusum and S. horneri were concentrated mainly in the small size classes during the initial growth phase, but were more or less evenly distributed in most size classes during the fast growing phase. Undaria pinnatifida and Costaria costata showed the same tendency as Sargassum spp., that frequency distribution became even when the plants reached their maximum growth. The kelp species recorded their maximum lengths in March, whereas Sargassum spp. showed their peaks in early summer. The relationships between the length and weight in different growth phases appeared to be dependent on the phenology of each species.  相似文献

Tung Ping Chau Marine Park in Hong Kong was designated in 2001 with aims to protect its highly-diverse marine habitats from destructive human activities. Sargassum spp. (mainly Sargassum siliquastrum) formed a dense canopy in Lung Lok Shiu (LLS) in southwestern side of the Marine Park. This Sargassum bed, however, disappeared and a barren ground developed 7 years after the marine park designation. The increase in density of the short-spined sea urchin Anthocidaris crassispina, and thus the grazing pressure, as a result of restriction on its commercial fishery within the Marine Park was hypothesized as the immediate cause of the barren ground formation. In this study, we tested this hypothesis and manipulated the density of A. crassispina in exclusion cages underwater in LLS, where S. siliquastrum canopy originally existed. Transplantation of S. siliquastrum thalli and ceramic tiles with their recruits was carried out in these cages in February–May 2012 and May 2013. The results showed that the transplanted Sargassum thalli could not survive outside exclusion cages, whereas the induced recruits were almost wiped out in all tiles even inside exclusion cages. This provides evidence that the sea urchin A. crassispina could have overgrazed S. siliquastrum thalli and decimated the Sargassum canopy in LLS. It also suggested that other than A. crassispina, other grazers also contributed to the removal of S. siliquastrum recruits. Therefore, natural recovery of Sargassum bed seems unlikely if the grazing pressure remains high in this site. Proactive management strategies may need to be adapted to restore this Sargassum bed.  相似文献

Sargassum has been photographed on the sea floor at depths of 5000 m. Sargassum was subjected to various pressures to simulate the effect of it being carried down in Langmuir circulation. The time-depth relation for Sargassum to become negatively buoyant was measured; the plant can become negatively buoyant at pressures of only 30 db if left at this pressure for ≈ 5 h. Both the higher critical pressure for the failure of gas vesicles and the longer resistance to subcritical pressure of pelagic Sargassum, compared with the benthonic varieties, suggest an evolutionary adaptation to an open ocean existence. Once negatively buoyant, Sargassum will sink to the sea floor in about 40 h. The measurements are consistent with large scale sinking of Sargassum given the conditions of strong winds and a deep mixed layer both of which exist in winter months in the Sargasso Sea.  相似文献

Sargassum C. Agardh (1820) is a taxonomically difficult genus distributed worldwide and reported as the most species‐rich genus of the Fucales. It is especially abundant in the Pacific where decreasing species richness is reported to occur from west to east. New Caledonia has been recognized as one of the hotspots of Sargassum diversity; however, species lists available for this region are old and incomplete and have not yet been updated with regard to the latest taxonomic revisions published. This study aimed at revising Sargassum diversity in New Caledonia and to assess its geographic affinities with neighboring Pacific regions. We used combined morphological and DNA analyses on new collections and examined numerous type specimens. Although 45 taxa have been listed in the literature, most of them have been either transferred to synonymy since or misidentified, and in this study, only 12 taxa were recognized as occurring in New Caledonia. They belong to the subgenus Sargassum sect. Binderianae (Grunow) Mattio et Payri (2), sect. Ilicifoliae (J. Agardh) Mattio et Payri (2), sect. Polycystae Mattio et Payri. (1), sect. Sargassum (4), sect. Zygocarpicae (J. Agardh) Setch. (2), and subgenus Phyllotrichia (Aresh.) J. Agardh (1). New Caledonian Sargassum flora appeared as the second richest in the region after the Pacific coast of Australia, with which it has shown high similarity, and shared species with all neighboring regions. One species, S. turbinarioides Grunow, is considered as endemic to New Caledonia. The low genetic diversity detected among several polymorphic species belonging to sect. The seasonality of standing crop of a Sargassum bed was investigated by conducting monthly sampling from February 1988 to July 1989. Environmental parameters of water movement, salinity, number of daytime minus tides, and water temperature were also measured. An intra-annual pattern of variation in standing crop of Sargassum crassifolium, S. cristaefolium, S. oligocystum, and S. polycystum was observed. Standing crop was generally lowest in February, March, April, or May, and highest in November through January. Sargassum accounted for about 35 to 85% of the monthly algal standing crop of the bed, and the observed variation in overall standing crop of the bed generally reflected the standing crop of Sargassum. The seasonality of the standing crops of the associated algal divisions also followed an annual cycle, but their maximum and minimum standing crops did not coincide with those of Sargassum. Individually, as well as collectively, the standing crops of the Sargassum spp. were poorly correlated with the environmental factors observed.  相似文献

Coastal structures are constructed principally to protect the coast line. However, these structures also can act as artificial substrata for seaweeds. In particular, armor blocks, such as tetrapods, prove to be good algal substrata. Our field observations on the vegetation and standing crop of seaweed communities on armor blocks led us to the following conclusions: 1) Ecklonia cavacommunities grew on tetrapods that had been placed to coincide with the maturation period of E. cava. The communities have been maintained for more than four years. 2) The standing crop of seaweeds on an offshore breakwater composed of tetrapods placed seven years before was almost the same as that found under natural conditions. 3) Variations in roughened surfaces (pebbles or scores and grooves 3 or 46 mm wide) did not affect the growth of Sargassum spp. However, a greater number of Ecklonia stolonifera plants were observed attached to roughened surfaces compared to smooth surfaces.  相似文献

The surfgrass Phyllospadix japonicus is an abundant seagrass on the exposed rocky shores of the Korean peninsula. Many surfgrass meadows on the coasts of Korea have been adversely affected by anthropogenic activities and natural phenomena such as “rock whitening,” which is caused by overgrowths of crustose coralline algae. Few attempts have been made to develop transplanting techniques for surfgrass, owing to the difficulty of transplant survival on exposed rocky shores. We developed a new Phyllospadix Transplant System (PTS), which was an artificial underwater structure constructed of a 4:5:1 ratio of cement, sand, and water. In January 2005, we transplanted P. japonicus shoots using the newly developed PTS. P. japonicus shoots were tied together at the lower part of the sheaths to iron screws, which were placed in a hollow part of the PTS, with latex elastic. To evaluate the feasibility of this transplantation technique, we compared vegetative and reproductive shoot densities, growth, and morphological characteristics in transplants to those of shoots in nearby natural beds over a 2-year period. Transplant density increased gradually without significant initial shoot loss. Approximately 6 months after transplantation, leaf growth of transplants was similar to that of naturally growing shoots. The shoot heights and sheath lengths of transplants were similar to those of naturally growing shoots at 10–15 months post-planting. Approximately 50 mm of rhizome elongation was detected in P. japonicus transplants over the 2-year period. Since P. japonicus transplants attached to the PTS successfully established at the test area, the transplantation of surfgrass using the PTS may be an effective approach to restoring the habitat of P. japonicus.  相似文献

Seasonal patterns of abundance of Sargassum johnstonii Setchell & Gardner, S. herporhizum Setchell & Gardner, and S. sinicola Setchell & Gardner var. camouii (Dawson) Norris & Yensen were observed in the northern Gulf of California where mean monthly sea temperatures range annually from < 14 °C to nearly 30 °C. The three species displayed peaks in size, canopy cover, and fertility in the spring, in between periods of seasonal temperature extremes. Larger plants were the first to develop reproductive structures, suggesting that a threshold in size must be reached before plants become fertile. Fertile receptacles were shed in summer. S. sinicola var. camouii retained a greater portion of its primary stipes during the summer dieback than the other two species and showed a second peak in fertility in fall. Whereas tropical Sargassum are most abundant in winter and temperate-zone Sargassum are most abundant in summer months, the Gulf of California species achieve maximum size and fertility in between seasons of extreme temperatures. A long-term decline in abundance of Sargassum was observed at the study site between 1977 and 1981, possibly due to the detrimental effects on Sargassum of anomalously warm sea temperatures in the Gulf of California in 1978 or to the subsequent effects of warm temperature on food webs in the region.  相似文献
