Small (3–7 cm long) Fucus distichus ssp. edentatus (de la Pyl.) Pow. Plants were tagged at three sites in which densities of the herbivorous snails Littorina sitkana and L. scutulata ranged from 367–4690 animals · M-2. From April–August 1986, the growth rate, degree of wounding, and reproductive status of individual thalli were monitored at 2–4 week intervals. Grazer-inflicted damage to the thalli varied within and among sites. Mean growth rates at the site with low densities of littorines were about twice those at the site with intermediate densities and about four times those at the high density site. At the site with high densities of littorines, F. distichus growth rates were negatively correlated with the degree to which the plants were wounded. There appeared to be no correlation of grazer density with F. distichus survivorship. Thalli at the site with few herbivores tended to reproduce earlier and at a larger size than did those at the other two sites. In all three areas, only thalli that had received little damage from herbivores became reproductive. By lowering growth rates and delaying reproduction in F. distichus, grazing by littorine snails can potentially cause variation in reproductive output among individual thalli.  相似文献

A method is described for the isolation of photosynthetically active chloroplasts from four species of brown algae: Fucus vesiculosis, Nereocystis luetkeana, Laminaria saccharina, and Macrocystis integrifolia. When compared to lettuce and spinach chloroplasts, the algal chloroplasts all showed lower activities for both photosystems II and I. Chloroplasts from all the plants produced H2O2, with photosystem I functioning as the O2 reductant in the light. In contrast to the green plants, however, brown algal chloroplasts strongly reduced O2 under conditions where both photosystems II and I remain active. Relative variable fluorescence values were lower both in intact plants and chloroplasts of the brown algae than for either spinach or lettuce. It is suggested that although light harvesting activities appear similar in all the plants, details of electron transport in brown algae may differ from those of green plants.  相似文献

Fucus serratus L., Fucus spiralis L., and Fucus vesiculosus L. (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) as well as Laminaria digitata (Huds.) Lamour., Laminaria hyperborea (Gunn.) Fosl., and Laminaria saccharina (L.) Lamour. (Laminariales, Phaeophyceae) have been investigated for the distribution of enzymic CO2 fixation capacities via phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (EC 4.1.1.32) (PEP-CK) and via ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.39) (RubP-C) in different regions of the thalli. The maximum of PEP-CK activity is found to be confined to the growing regions of the algae, while the activity of RubP-C achieves its highest values in the entirely differentiated parts of the fronds. These findings are confirmed by the results of photosynthetic and light-independent (dark) carbon assimilation as determined by in vivo 14CO2 fixation. The physiological significance of these differential patterns of carboxylation patterns is discussed with respect to the ontogenetic stage and the chemical constitution of the different thallus parts.  相似文献

Photosynthesis-irradiance relationships were determined in the field for five species of littoral and shallow sublittoral marine benthic green algae (Chlorophyta) of differing morphologies. Each species exhibited a linear increase in photosynthetic rate with increasing irradiance up to a maximum light-saturated value. Full sunlight (1405 to 1956 μE·m?2·s?1) inhibited photosynthesis of all species except the thick, optically dense, Codium fragile (Sur.) Har. Compensation irradiances ranged from 6.1 μE·m?2·s?1 for Enteromorpha intestinalis (L.) Link to 11.4 μE·m?2·s?1 for Ulva lobata (Kütz) S. & G. and did not reveal a consistent relationship to seaweed morphology. Saturation irradiances were determined statistically (Ik) and visually from graphical plots. with the latter technique resulting in values three to eight times higher and different comparative rankings of species than the former. Ik saturation irradiances were highest for Chaetomorpha linum (Müll.) Kütz. (81.9 μE·m?2·s?1) and lowest for Codium fragile (49.6 μE·m?2·s?1) and did not reveal a relationship with seaweed morphology. Regression equations describing light-limited photosynthetic rates and the relative magnitudes of the maximal net photosynthetic responses both strongly suggested a relationship with seaweed morphology. Highest net photosynthetic rates were obtained for the thin, sheet-like algae Ulva lobata (9.2 mg C·g dry wt?1·h?1), U. rigida C. Ag. (6.5 mg C·g dry wt?1·h?1) and the tubular form, Enteromorpha intestinalis (7.3 mg C·g dry wt?1·h?1), while lowest rates occurred for Codium fragile (0.9 mg C·g dry wt?1·h?1). Similarly, steepest light-limited slopes were found for the algae of simpler morphology, while the most gradual slope was determined for Codium fragile, the alga with greatest thallus complexity.  相似文献

The vertical zonation of the flat periwinkles Littorina obtusata (L.) and L. mariae Sacchi et Rastelli is different, but overlaps. At a sheltered location on the Isle of Cumbrae, Scotland, L. obtusata, although most abundant on Fucus vesiculosus L. and Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. on the midshore, ranged over the entire shore from the Pelvetia zone down to the upper limits of Laminaria. Littorina mariae exhibited a much more restricted distribution being associated predominantly with Fucus serratus L. on the lower shore. In laboratory trials with adult plants, flat periwinkles found fucoid algae both more attractive and more palatable than other seaweeds. Littorina obtusata also preferred the reproductive receptacles of fucoid algae to their vegetative tissue. Tiny germlings of a diversity of seaweeds were readily consumed by L. obtusata. In choice experiments germling Ulva lactuca L. was preferred to adult U. lactuca, whereas adult Fucus serratus was preferred to germling F. serratus. Contrasting foraging behaviours between different species of flat periwinkle are discussed in relation to differences in their radular dentition.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in tissue nitrogen, carbon, amino acids and ammonium were determined for the brown algae Macrocystis integrifolia Bory and Nereocystis luetkeana (Mertens) Pastels and Ruprecht, For M. integrifolia, the proportions of tissue nitrogen and carbon in blades, bulbs and stipes were also determined. The composition of the two algae in terms of the above constituents was similar. In addition, ammonium, nitrogen and protein-bound amino acids showed distinct seasonal trends with high values during the winter and low levels during the summer. The range for nitrogen was 0.8–3.0% and for proteins 7.6–11.7% of dry weight. In contrast, carbon content and C/N ratio showed the reverse trend with higher values during the summer and lower values during the winter. The range for carbon was 19–31% of dry weight, and the C/N ratio showed a range of 9–37. The free amino acids did not show any specific seasonably. Tissue nitrogen and carbon showed higher values in the blades than in the bulbs and stipes.  相似文献

The ability to rapidly distinguish viable sub-populations of cells within populations of macroalgal protoplast isolations was demonstrated using flow cytometry. Viable protoplasts from Ulva sp. and Porphyra perforata J. Ag. were distinguished from non-viable protoplasts based on differential fluorescein accumulation. The identities of cortical and epidermal protoplasts from Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Ag. were inferred based on light-scattering and chlorophyll a autofluorescence. Three cell types could be distinguished among protoplasts released from thalli of P. perforata based on chlorophyll a and phycoerythrin autofluorescence. Mixed protoplast populations of Ulva sp. and P. perforata were also discernable based on relative chlorophyll a and phycoerythrin autofluorescence. The ability to screen heterogenous protoplast populations rapidly, combined with the cell sorting capabilities of many flow cytometers, should prove valuable for seaweed biotechnology.  相似文献

Low inorganic carbon (Ci) concentrations in seawater are usually an important factor controlling photosynthesis and growth of seaweeds. The green seaweed, Ulva conglobata Kjellm, collected from a rock pool in a middle intertidal zone located at Nanao Island, Shantou, China, were cultured under low Ci level for several days, to examine the effect of severe carbon limitation on photosynthesis. The rather high pH compensation points obtained from the pH-drift experiments indicated that U. conglobata was capable of acquiring HCO3 ? from surrounding seawater as its Ci source for photosynthesis. However, thalli of U. conglobata cultured in Ci-starved seawater exhibited a decline of biomass, showing that the realistic photosynthetic carbon gain could not compensate for the respiratory carbon consumption in the thalli under severe Ci limitation during laboratory culture. Compared with ambient Ci conditions, the culture under severe Ci limitation significantly had an increased pigment content, but a lower maximum quantum yield and photosynthetic electron transport rate. Additionally, the maximum carbon-saturating photosynthesis rate and the apparent photosynthetic conductance of U. conglobata thalli increased in cultures with severe Ci limitation compared with ambient Ci in low N-grown thalli. The results suggest that under severe Ci limitation, U. conglobata thalli increased capacities of both light absorption processes and carbon fixation pathways.  相似文献

Morphological, ecological, and genetic distinctions of a high intertidal, dwarf, non-tide pool member of the Fucus distichus (L.) Powell complex were assessed at an exposed site in southern Maine, U.S.A. Variation in plant stature from typical F. distichus ssp. edentatus (De la Pylaie) Powell to the dwarf form is continuous. On the other hand, measurements of reproductively mature plants collected throughout the eulittoral zone showed a bimodal pattern, i.e., there was a high frequency of dwarf forms (4–8 cm) and F. distichus ssp. edentatus (13–28 cm). The two forms have distinct reproductive phenologies: the dwarf plant exhibiting a unimodal reproductive maximum (fall), while F. distichus ssp. edentatus has pronounced bimodal reproductive maxima (spring and fall). Differences in stature and reproduction between the dwarf form and F. distichus ssp. edentatus were maintained when their respective progeny were grown under common environmental conditions. Thus, the differences are heritable rather than environmentally induced.  相似文献

The growth of apical segments of six perennial fucoid littoral algae (Pelvetia canaliculata (L.) Dec. et Thur., Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol., Fucus spiralis L., F. vesiculosus L., F. serratus L. and F. distichus L. subsp. edentatus (Pyl.) Powell) was measured at approximately monthly intervals during 1 year.In winter, elongation was limited by temperature and light. Maximum growth in May–June coincided with minimum N concentration in the seawater, but with high N concentration in the apical tissue. Throughout summer, both growth and tissue N concentration decreased, indicating that the growth was nutrient limited.A close linear correlation is indicated between elongation and weight increase in apices of A. nodosum.  相似文献

Stylaria lacustris (L.) was offered 14C-labelled algae. The ingestion rate of diatoms was 0.79 g carbon/hour at 19°C. Diatoms (Nitzschia actinastroides) were well assimilated, green algae (Scenedesmus acuminatus) were practically not assimilated. The less assimilable algae are ingested at higher rates, indicating a regulation mechanism. Biomass doubling time was estimated to be about 3.6 days at 19°C.  相似文献

A comparison of chlorophyll-a fluorescence in brown algae (Macrocystis integrifolia, Fucus vesiculosis), green algae (Scenedesmus obliquus, Ulva sp.) and higher plants (bean, corn) show differences in the relative fluorescence intensities and induction time courses which characterize each type of plant. These differences are not reflected in either the maximum fluorescence emission in the presence of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (Fmax) or the nonvariable fluorescence (Fo). Constancy of Fo and Fmax suggests functional similarities of photosystem II and associated antennae pigments in the various classes of plants. The time course differences are observed only in the absence of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea and appear, therefore, to be electron transport dependent. During induction, the peak in fluorescence (Fp) is much lower in all of the algae studied than in the higher plants. Exogenous O2 strongly quenches Fp in all plants studied and our data indicate that the low Fp in the algae can be partially accounted for by endogenous O2 quenching.  相似文献

Many ecosystems rely on subsidies of carbon and nutrients from surrounding environments. In headwater streams that are heavily shaded by riparian forests, allochthonous inputs from terrestrial systems often comprise a major part of the organic matter budget. Bacteria play a key role in organic matter cycling in streams, but there is limited evidence about how much bacterial carbon is actually assimilated by invertebrate and fish consumers, and how bacterial carbon assimilation varies among streams. We conducted stable isotope tracer additions of 13C-acetate, that is assimilated only by bacteria, and 15N-ammonium, that is assimilated by both bacteria and algae, in two small, shaded streams in the Adirondack region of New York State, USA. Our goal was to determine whether there is an important trophic link between bacteria and macroconsumers, and whether the link changes when the light environment is experimentally altered. In 2009, we evaluated bacterial carbon use in both streams with natural canopy cover using 10-day dual-isotope tracer releases. The canopy was then thinned in one stream to increase light availability and primary production and tracer experiments were repeated in 2010. As part of the tracer experiments, we developed a respiration assay to measure the δ 13C content of live bacteria, which provided critical information for determining how much of the carbon assimilated by invertebrate consumers is from bacterial sources. Some invertebrate taxa, including scraper mayflies (Heptagenia spp.) that feed largely on biofilms assimilated over 70% of their carbon from bacterial sources, whereas shredder caddisflies (Pycnopsyche spp.) that feed on decomposing leaves assimilated less than 1% of their carbon from bacteria. Increased light availability led to strong declines in the magnitude of bacterial carbon fluxes to different consumers (varying from ?17 to ?91% decrease across invertebrate taxa), suggesting that bacterial energy assimilation differs not only among consumer taxa but also within the same consumer taxa in streams with different ecological contexts. Our results demonstrate that fluxes of bacterial carbon to higher trophic levels in streams can be substantial, that is over 70% for some taxa, but that invertebrate taxa vary considerably in their reliance on bacterial carbon, and that local variation in carbon sources controls how much bacterial carbon invertebrates use.  相似文献

Light petroleum extracts from thalli of Fucus vesiculosus (L.) and Laminaria digitata (Huds.) Lamour. stimulate growth of axenically cultured Fucus spiralis L. and Enteromorpha compressa (L.) Grev. in amounts per litre culture medium corresponding to one to 10 mg wet weight of the brown algae. This indicates the presence of a lipophilic, very active growth regulator in the blades. Extracts from the meristematic zone of Laminaria are much less active. Vitamins D3, D2 and 1,25-(OH)2-D3 at 1·10?8– 1·10?7 M increase the fresh weight of Enteromorpha compressa and Fucus spiralis up to 100% or more. The dry weight of Nemalion helminthoides (Veil, in With.) Batt. is also increased under the same conditions. Ergosterol and cholesterol are also growth-stimulating but higher concentrations (e.g. 1·10?6 M) are necessary. The effects of the D vitamins manifest themselves without any auxins being added to the medium.  相似文献

An alkali-insoluble cell wall component of Fucus distichus embryos is shown to be cellulose. Cellulose is not found in eggs, but within 20 min following fertilization is present in cell walls of zygotes. Incorporation of [3H]glucose or NaH14CO3 confirms that this cellulose in zygotes of F. distichus and F. vesiculosus is newly synthesized, with the highest rate of synthesis occurring within the first 60 min. Use of specific inhibitors indicates that the increase in cellulose does not require protein or RNA synthesis. The evidence is consistent with the hypothesis that the initiation of cellulose synthesis triggered by fertilization is controlled at the post-translational level.  相似文献

Field experiments were used to examine the effects of biological interactions on the abundance of Iridaea flaccida (S. & G.) Silva within and below its normal range in the intertidal zone of central California. A combination of competitor removal, grazer exclusion and transplant manipulations showed that within the I. flaccida zone, this alga can be the first macroscopic plant to become reestablished after clearing and that this can occur in less than two months. Grazing by molluscs within this zone retards, but does not prevent, re-establishment. Although absent prior to the experiments, both I. flaccida and I. cordata (Turn.) Bory settled, grew rapidly and reproduced in cleared areas below the I. flaccida zone, regardless of the presence of grazers. These plants did not establish themselves if entire thalli or holdfasts of other algae normally occupying the lower zone were present. The results support the few other in situ experimental investigations of algal zonation by showing that, when bounded by other plants, the lower limits of intertidal algae are directly determined by competition. They also suggest that I. flaccida and I. cordata may be conspecific.  相似文献

Numerous experimental studies have reported inducible defenses in macroalgae, but most of them have been conducted in laboratory environments where algae were maintained detached from the substratum and in artificial flow regimes. The results of those experiments might not reflect the natural situation, which can only be studied in situ. We examined whether the brown macroalgae Dictyota kunthii (C. Agardh) Greville and Macrocystis integrifolia (Bory) show inducible defenses following exposure to different grazing levels (direct, water-borne cues from nearby grazed conspecifics, presence of a non-grazing herbivore and natural grazing) in field experiments, striving to maintain natural conditions as much as possible. We measured palatability of algae after exposure to different grazing levels by using live algae and agar-based food containing non-polar extracts. M. integrifolia showed no induction of defenses (at least not of non-polar compounds), suggesting constitutive defenses, absence of defenses (tolerance) or use of another strategy to avoid herbivory. These results are similar to those from previous laboratory experiments. In D. kunthii, defense was induced after two weeks of direct grazing by amphipods under field conditions. Water-borne cues from nearby grazed conspecifics, presence of a non-grazing herbivore and natural grazing did not induce defenses. Induction of defense in response to direct grazing agrees with results from a previous laboratory study, but while indirect cues induced defenses in the laboratory, there was no measurable induced defense in the field. Probably chemical cues from grazers are diluted quickly in the field, not reaching concentrations that cause induction of defenses. This might be the reason why in some algae induction by direct grazing is a more important defensive strategy than induction by water-borne cues. The results from our study also suggest that laboratory experiments showing induced defenses in response to grazed neighbours or mere grazer presence need to be interpreted with caution.  相似文献

Recent food habit and productivity research on the killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus (L.), suggests that this species is important in the movement of organic material within and out of the salt marsh ecosystem. The stable carbon isotope ratios of Fundulus muscle tissue and gut contents were measured seasonally to determine the carbon source of the killifish. For muscle δ13C values ranged from -13.9% to -15.8% and -15.8% to -18.4% for gut contents, suggesting differential assimilation of ingested material. Muscle tissue indicate that assimilated carbon probably originated from a mixture of benthic algae and Spartina ingested by major prey species: the filddle: crab, Uca pugnax (Smith): the polychaete, Nereis (Neanthes) succinea Frey and Leuckart; the tanaid, Leptochelia rapax Harger; and other small crustaceans. Small fish (age0–1 yr) showed slightly lower δ13C values than larger fish (age 1–3 yr), consistent with differences in their feeding habits. The only seasonal pattern was an enrichment in tissue 13C that occurred for both small and large fish in the spring, corresponding to the peak spawning period. The δ13C determination is a useful tool in identifying and tracing carbon sources through the salt marsh food web, detecting differences in feeding habits between age classes of organisms, and assessing the relative nutritive value of ingested dietary items if differential assimilation is suspected.  相似文献

There is some controversy concerning the presence of steryl glycosides and acylated steryl glycosides in eucaryotic algae. These two classes of sterol compounds were investigated in species belonging to the three major groups of eucaryotic algae: green algae (Ulva gigantea, Cladophora rupestris), brown algae (Fucus vesiculosus, Ascophyllum nodosum), and red algae (Rhodymenia palmata, Porphyridium sp.). All these algae contain both steryl glycosides and acylated steryl glycosides. The sterol components of these compounds vary according to the alga but they are always the same as the free sterols of the alga in question. The most common sugar moiety is glucose. In the acylated steryl glycosides, the fatty acid is mainly palmitic acid. The percentage of these compounds (as a percentage of the total sterol content) is often low.  相似文献
