Differences in the base composition of genomes can occur because of GC pressure, purine-loading pressure (AG pressure) and RNY pressure, for which there are possible functional explanations, and because of the more abstract pressures exerted by individual bases. The graphical approach of Muto and Osawa was used to analyse how bacteriophages and bacteria balance potentially conflicting pressures on their genomes. Phages generally respond to AG pressure by increasing A while keeping T constant, and by decreasing C while keeping G constant. In contrast, bacteria generally increase both A and T, the former more so, and decrease both G and C, the latter more so. These differences largely occur at third codon positions, which are more responsive than first and second codon positions to AG pressure and GC pressure. Phages respond to AG pressure more in the third codon position than bacteria, whereas bacteria respond more in the first codon position than phages. Conversely, bacteria respond to GC pressure more in the third codon position than phages, whereas phages respond more in the first codon position than bacteria. As GC pressure increases, A is traded for C and AG pressure decreases; first and second codon positions, having more A than T, are most responsive to this negative effect of increased GC pressure; third positions either do not respond (phages) or respond weakly (bacteria). In a set of 48 phage-host pairs, degrees of purine loading were less correlated between phage and host than were GC percentages. These results suggest that pressures on conventional and genome phenotypes operate differentially in phages and bacteria, generating both general differences in base composition and specific differences characteristic of particular phage-host pairs. The reciprocal relationship between GC pressure and AG pressure implies that effects attributed to GC pressure may actually be due to AG pressure, and vice versa.  相似文献

Rabbit peripheral blood lymphocyte (PBL) cultures stimulated by ConA and then blocked by the addition of competing sugar or antiserum after 6–15 h of ConA prestimulation respond to restimulation by PHA or PWM to a much greater extent than to continuous stimulation or delayed stimulation with PHA or PWM. This effect of mixed lectin sequential stimulation indicates that many of the same PBLs will respond to more than one mitogen, but that some cells require preactivation by one mitogen in order to respond fully to another mitogen. Thus, the number of PBLs which respond to PHA or PWM alone is much less than the number which respond following pretreatment with ConA when the pretreatment effect of ConA alone is blocked. Rabbit PBLs do not respond to LPS and preactivation by ConA does not prepare rabbit PBLs to respond to LPS.  相似文献

We used abundance data and the program Focus to determine the spatial scale at which 31 species of longhorned beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) respond to forest habitat amount. We predicted that the spatial scale at which species respond would increase with body size, and that species using ephemeral larval habitat would respond at larger spatial scales than species using more stable larval habitat. We found that forest cover was a better measure of the amount of habitat for polyphagous species than for oligophagous species. Larger species of longhorned beetles responded to forest cover at larger scales. We did not find evidence that species using more ephemeral larval habitat conditions responded at larger scales than species developing in more stable habitat conditions. Our results highlight the importance of accurately describing habitat in studies of species–environment relationships. While scales of response may be species-specific, some generalizations across species are possible.  相似文献

Many of the chorda tympani fibers of crab-eating monkeys respond to more than one of the four basic stimuli (NaCl, sucrose, HCl, and quinine hydrochloride) as well as cooling or warming of the tongue. Fibers could be classified into four categories depending on their best sensitivity to any one of the four basic stimuli. Sucrose-best and quinine-best fibers are rather specifically sensitive to sucrose and quinine, respectively, while salt-best and acid-best fibers respond relatively well to HCl and NaCl, respectively. Saccharin, dulcin, and Pb acetate produce a good response in sucrose-best fibers, but quinine- best and salt-best fibers also respond to saccharin. Highly significant positive correlations exist between amounts of responses to sucrose and those to saccharin, dulcin, and Pb acetate, indicating that these substances produce in the monkey a taste quality similar to that produced by sucrose. Compared with chroda tympani fibers of rats, hamsters, and squirrel monkeys, macaque monkey taste fibers are more narrowly tuned to one of the four basic taste stimuli and more highly developed in sensitivity to various sweet-tasting substances. Also LiCl and NaCl are more effective stimuli for gustatory receptors in macaque monkeys than NH4Cl and KCl. This contrasts with a higher sensitivity to KCl and NH4Cl than to NaCl in chorda tympani fibers of squirrel monkeys.  相似文献

Summary Terrestrial species of salamanders generally have a higher diversity of prey in their stomachs and produce smaller and less frequent clutches than do species living in wetter habitats. This may be a consequence of differences in prey availability in the two types of habitats. Prey frequently fluctuate in availability in terrestrial areas as a result of fluctuations in rainfall and the inability of salamanders to forage efficiently during dry periods; the salamanders respond with a generalist diet and relatively K-selected reproductive tactics. In wetter habitats, prey fluctuations are probably dampened due to more constant conditions of moisture; salamanders respond with a more specialized diet and relatively r-selected reproductive tactics.  相似文献

Introduction

Terrorist use of a radiological dispersal device (RDD, or “dirty bomb”), which combines a conventional explosive device with radiological materials, is among the National Planning Scenarios of the United States government. Understanding employee willingness to respond is critical for planning experts. Previous research has demonstrated that perception of threat and efficacy is key in the assessing willingness to respond to a RDD event.

Methods

An anonymous online survey was used to evaluate the willingness of hospital employees to respond to a RDD event. Agreement with a series of belief statements was assessed, following a methodology validated in previous work. The survey was available online to all 18,612 employees of the Johns Hopkins Hospital from January to March 2009.

Results

Surveys were completed by 3426 employees (18.4%), whose demographic distribution was similar to overall hospital staff. 39% of hospital workers were not willing to respond to a RDD scenario if asked but not required to do so. Only 11% more were willing if required. Workers who were hesitant to agree to work additional hours when required were 20 times less likely to report during a RDD emergency. Respondents who perceived their peers as likely to report to work in a RDD emergency were 17 times more likely to respond during a RDD event if asked. Only 27.9% of the hospital employees with a perception of low efficacy declared willingness to respond to a severe RDD event. Perception of threat had little impact on willingness to respond among hospital workers.

Conclusions

Radiological scenarios such as RDDs are among the most dreaded emergency events yet studied. Several attitudinal indicators can help to identify hospital employees unlikely to respond. These risk-perception modifiers must then be addressed through training to enable effective hospital response to a RDD event.  相似文献

Begging signals of offspring are condition-dependent cues that are usually predicted to display information about the short-term need (i.e. hunger) to which parents respond by allocating more food. However, recent models and experiments have revealed that parents, depending on the species and context, may respond to signals of quality (i.e. offspring reproductive value) rather than need. Despite the critical importance of this distinction for life history and conflict resolution theory, there is still limited knowledge of alternative functions of offspring signals. In this study, we investigated the communication between offspring and caring females of the common earwig, Forficula auricularia, hypothesizing that offspring chemical cues display information about nutritional condition to which females respond in terms of maternal food provisioning. Consistent with the prediction for a signal of quality we found that mothers exposed to chemical cues from well-fed nymphs foraged significantly more and allocated food to more nymphs compared with females exposed to solvent (control) or chemical cues from poorly fed nymphs. Chemical analysis revealed significant differences in the relative quantities of specific cuticular hydrocarbon compounds between treatments. To our knowledge, this study demonstrates for the first time that an offspring chemical signal reflects nutritional quality and influences maternal care.  相似文献

The ability of many animals to recognize kin has allowed them to evolve diverse cooperative behaviours; such ability is less well studied for plants. Many plants, including Artemisia tridentata, have been found to respond to volatile cues emitted by experimentally wounded neighbours to increase levels of resistance to herbivory. We report that this communication was more effective among A. tridentata plants that were more closely related based on microsatellite markers. Plants in the field that received cues from experimentally clipped close relatives experienced less leaf herbivory over the growing season than those that received cues from clipped neighbours that were more distantly related. These results indicate that plants can respond differently to cues from kin, making it less likely that emitters will aid strangers and making it more likely that receivers will respond to cues from relatives. More effective defence adds to a growing list of favourable consequences of kin recognition for plants.  相似文献

The nesting-cue hypothesis poses that avian brood parasites use nest-defence responses directed toward them by hosts as cues to locate nests to parasitize. Hosts that respond more intensely to brood parasites should provide more cues about nest location than those hosts giving lower intensity responses. Thus, the nesting-cue hypothesis predicts that within a species parasitized nest owners should respond more intensely than unparasitized nest owners to cowbirds perched near and away from nests. This assumes that hosts respond to cowbirds when they are encountered away from the nest and that host responses gradually increase in intensity as the cowbird nears the nest. The nesting-cue hypothesis, its assumptions and prediction were tested using six host species of the brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater, Icterinae). We presented a female cowbird model at three distances from host nests and compared the responses elicited. All species responded to the cowbird at all distances, which supports the first assumption. Some of the rarely elicited responses (e.g. contacts) and the proximity of the host to the model varied significantly with distance, which suggests that cowbirds could use nest defence by the host as cues to the location of an active nest. However, parasitized nest owners did not respond more intensely than unparasitized nest owners to the cowbird positioned at any of the distances from the nest, which does not support the nesting-cue hypothesis itself. Further considerations are discussed that suggest that nest defence is not likely to be used as a nest-location cue.  相似文献

Various auditory interneurons of the duetting bush cricket Ancistrura nigrovittata with axons ascending to the brain are presented. In this species, more intersegmental sound-activated neurons have been identified than in any other bush cricket so far, among them a new type of ascending neuron with posterior soma in the prothoracic ganglion (AN4). These interneurons show not only morphological differences in the prothoracic ganglion and the brain, but also respond differently to carrier frequencies, intensity and direction. As a set of neurons, they show graded differences for all of these parameters. A response type not described among intersegmental neurons of crickets and other bush crickets so far is found in the AN3 neuron with a tonic response, broad frequency tuning and little directional dependence. All neurons, with the exception of AN3, respond in a relatively similar manner to the temporal patterns of the male song: phasically to high syllable repetitions and rhythmically to low syllable repetitions. The strongest coupling to the temporal pattern is found in TN1. In contrast to behavior the neuronal responses depend little on syllable duration. AN4, AN5 and TN1 respond well to the female song. AN4 (at higher intensities) and TN1 respond well to a complete duet.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Capsule: Non-breeding waterbirds are more likely to respond to drone approach when in larger flocks, and responses are more likely in arable and coastal habitats than at inland lochs.

Aims: To investigate the extent to which drones are a potential source of disturbance to non-breeding waterbirds.

Methods: Using a commercially available quadcopter drone, we approached waterbird flocks of varying sizes in coastal, freshwater, and arable habitats following a standardized protocol.

Results: Waterbirds at coastal sites and in arable fields were more likely to respond to drone approach than those at inland freshwater bodies. Larger flocks were more likely to respond to drone approach and responded at a greater distance than smaller flocks.

Conclusion: Repeated drone use at coastal and arable sites with large aggregations of feeding or roosting waterbirds could cause energetically costly flight responses, increased stress, and effective loss of available habitat. At such sites, it may be beneficial to regulate recreational and commercial drone use to minimize potential disturbance effects.  相似文献

The signalling hypothesis of eggshell colouration in birds posits that females of species with blue-green eggs signal their phenotypic quality or the quality of their eggs to their mates through deposition of the antioxidant biliverdin as pigment. Males respond by investing more in the offspring. Through a cross-fostering experiment where we have exchanged whole clutches between pairs of pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca nests, we managed to break potential associations between female quality and clutch chromaticity. We show that males respond to incubated clutches with more variable and higher peak values in blue-green chroma through a higher proportional investment in nestling provisioning on day 4 of the nestling period, when males invest more heavily than females in provisioning. More variable clutches show higher peak chroma values. We also show that egg colour during the two-week incubation period has a significant effect, which is not found for the colour of eggs during the laying period. Finally, the proportion of male provisioning visits affects negatively female brooding effort and nestling mortality, and thereby has positive effects on female fitness. Blue-green chroma in the pied flycatcher functions as a signal of female or clutch quality to males which respond by adjusting their relative investment with respect to total pair effort.  相似文献

The trade-off between feeding and vigilance in flocks of birds has been extensively studied and modelled. An assumption of many models is that if one bird spots the predator, it gives a signal and the rest of the flock takes flight. However, it has been observed that birds do not always respond to signals and in fact many signals turn out to be false alarms. Since taking flight is both costly in time and energy, it may be advantageous for birds not to respond to all alarm calls. A model is developed to show under what circumstances birds should respond to a signal. The model predicts that under most, but not all, circumstances, birds should respond to multiple detections but not to single detections. The model also predicts that if birds respond to all flights, they will have to compensate for the time lost to feeding and the greater energy requirement of spending more time in flight, by being less vigilant, and they have a lower probability of survival than birds which only respond to multiple detections.  相似文献

Female cowbirds (Molothrus ater), maintained in isolation from males during the breeding season, respond to the playback of male song with copulatory postures. They respond more often to some songs than others. Song potency can thus be operationally defined by the number of copulatory responses a song elicits. The purpose of the present study was to validate this measure of song potency by investigating its relationship to mating success. We observed two colonies of cowbirds during the breeding season and recorded details of their courtship. In addition, song potency of the males was tested by playback with a different group of captive females. The results indicate a relationship between maximum song potency and mating success: the males that obtained the most copulations had songs of higher maximum potency and were also observed to have been more dominant during the winter and early spring.  相似文献

Observations and playback experiments were used to study the development of grunts and alarm calls among free-ranging vervet monkeys. Results indicate that the production of vocalizations, their use in appropriate circumstances, and the response to the vocalizations of others emerge gradually during an individual's first 4 years. Particularly in the case of grunts, different acoustic components develop at different rates. Immatures respond appropriately to the calls of others before they produce appropriate vocalizations themselves. Finally, immature vocal development may be aided by cues received from adults. If an infant gives an alarm call to a genuine predator (as opposed to a non-predator), adults respond more strongly. When infants hear a playback of an alarm, they are more likely to respond appropriately if they first look at an adult.  相似文献

By utilizing naturally occurring autoimmune antibodies from patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, we have isolated and functionally characterized two unique subpopulations of T cells. JRA+ T cells, i.e., those identified by sera from these patients, react poorly in response to allogeneic cells, respond to Con A but not PHA, and do not help in the synthesis and secretion of Ig by B cells. In contrast, JRA- T cells, i.e., those not identified by sera from these patients, respond very well to allogeneic cells, proliferate well in response to PHA but not Con A, and more interestingly, can greatly enhance the secretion of Ig by B cells.  相似文献

The generation of a functional nervous system is dependent on precise pathfinding of axons during development. This pathfinding is directed by the distribution of local and long-range guidance cues, the latter of which are believed to be distributed in gradients. Gradients of guidance cues have been associated with growth cone function for over a hundred years. However, little is known about the mechanisms used by growth cones to respond to these gradients, in part owing to the lack of identifiable gradients in vivo. In the developing grasshopper limb, two gradients of the semaphorin Sema-2a are necessary for correct neuronal pathfinding in vivo. The gradients are found in regions where growth cones make critical steering decisions. Observations of different growth cone behaviors associated with these gradients have provided some insights into how growth cones respond to them. Growth cones appear to respond more faithfully to changes in concentration, rather than absolute levels, of Sema-2a expression, whereas the absolute levels may regulate growth cone size.  相似文献

A prolonged, 2-hr period of exercise hyperemia in the canine gracilis muscle was associated with initial increases in the arteriovenous differences for potassium, hydrogen and osmolality. However, that for hydrogen decreased and those for potassium and osmolality became negligible by the 120th min while blood flow remained elevated. Thus, potassium and osmolality do not appear to participate importantly in the maintenance of exercise hyperemia in canine gracilis muscle. A bioassay muscle did not respond with comparable dilation when submaximal, graded levels of exercise hyperemia were induced in an upstream, donor muscle but did respond more comparably in terms of magnitude and time course when the exercise was more severe. Thus, stable vasoactive substances may not entirely account for exercise hyperemia and the study fails to provide evidence that the capillary acts as a significant barrier to the vasoactive substances.  相似文献

Macrophages elicited by injection of agents that produce inflammation or obtained from animals infected with intracellular parasites are primed so that they respond to phagocytosis or exposure to phorbol myristate acetate with a marked increase in the respiratory burst. This capacity to respond to stimulation with increased release of reactive oxygen metabolites appears to play an essential role in the increased microbicidal capability of activated macrophages. Macrophages can be primed for this capacity by incubation in vitro with bacterial products, proteases, or gamma interferon. The molecular basis for this priming is presently under investigation. An increase in the number or affinity of plasma membrane receptors does not appear to explain priming. Changes in one or more of the transduction events responsible for stimulus-response coupling might lead to more efficient stimulation or function of the enzyme responsible for the respiratory burst; these events are just beginning to be studied in macrophages. Priming can be explained at least in part by a modification of the respiratory burst enzyme such that it binds its substrate NADPH, the source of electrons for reduction of oxygen to superoxide anion, more efficiently. Understanding the molecular basis for priming of the respiratory burst might permit its eventual therapeutic manipulation.  相似文献

We conducted playback experiments with wild bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, to determine whether there is sufficient information in their individually distinctive signature whistles for individual recognition. We conducted experiments with members of a resident community of dolphins in waters near Sarasota, Florida, during temporary capture-release projects. We used a paired playback design, wherein the same two whistle sequences were predicted to evoke opposite responses from two different target animals. This design controlled for any unknown cues that may have been present in the playback stimuli. We predicted that mothers would respond more strongly to the whistles of their own independent offspring than to the whistles of a familiar, similar-aged nonoffspring. Similarly, we predicted that independent offspring would respond more strongly to the whistles of their own mother than to the whistles of a familiar, similar-aged female. Target animals were significantly (P<0.02) more likely to respond to the predicted stimuli, with responses measured by the number of head turns towards the playback speaker. In bottlenose dolphin societies, stable, individual-specific relationships are intermixed with fluid patterns of association between individuals. In primate species that live in similar 'fission-fusion' type societies, individual recognition is commonplace. Thus, when taken in the context of what is known about the social structure and behaviour of bottlenose dolphins, these playback experiments suggest that signature whistles are used for individual recognition.
