On clear days the temperature in a mat of floating Lemnaceae was 4° to 11° above that of the surface of the open water. The temperature of the environment 2 cm above or below the plant surface closely followed the surface temperature's quick response to changes in net radiation. The plant surface reflects more enery and transmits less than the open water, therefore there is less fluctuation in temperature in the water 10 cm and more below the floating plant surface. This results in a diurnal thermal stratification. At the surface of the open water changes in temperature tended to be smaller and slower, related to the air temperature; and, with wind disturbance, the water profile maintained relatively homogeneous temperatures.  相似文献

The detrimental effect of solar radiation on the survival of conidia of the entomopathogenic fungusPaecilomyces fumoroseus was studied by monitoring germinability and ability to form colonies (CFU) of conidia irradiated at two temperatures, 25 and 35 °C, harmless to shaded conidia. There was no apparent effect when spores were exposed to a high level of artificial radiation (0.66 W m–2 UVB). However, at a lower level of irradiance (0.33 W m–2), effects of radiation occurred more quickly at 35 °C than at 25 °C. Under natural solar radiation, the rate of decrease in germinability or viability was doubled at 35 °C as compared to 25 °C, indicating an interaction between temperature and radiation effects under natural conditions. This interaction was not detected in indoor experiments, indicating that the spectral distribution of UV radiation has to be taken in account as well as its irradiance when studying its effects.Abbreviations CFU Colony Forming Units - UTC Universal Time Coordinates - UVB Ultra Violet B radiation (280–320 nm)  相似文献

Measurements in The Netherlands show that in the winter (Dec.–March) solar radiation measured perpendicular to the solar beam can be quite strong. Consequently, high surface temperatures can occur on suitably exposed, dark surfaces of low thermal conductivity. In December, the surface temperature on the bark of old pine trees was found to be up to 28°C above the ambient air temperature. In February, the excess temperatures of pine bark reached as high as 37°C. The temperatures of steeply south-exposed pine litter were even somewhat higher. South-exposed edges of pinewoods and similar situations are especially favourable due to the wind shelter and extra radiation gain they provide. In February, ants were found to bask in clusters attaining temperatures of as much as 20°C above that of ambient air. Basking vipers attained excess temperatures of 25°C.  相似文献

Nitrate depletion in the riparian zone of a small woodland stream   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Field enrichments with nitrate in two spring-fed drainage lines within the riparian zone of a small woodland stream near Toronto, Ontario showed an absence of nitrate depletion. Laboratory experiments with riparian substrates overlain with nitrate enriched solutions revealed a loss of only 5–8% of the nitrate during 48 h incubation at 12°C. However, 22–24% of the initial nitrate was depleted between 24 and 48 h when a second set of substrate cores was incubated at 20°C. Short-term (3 h) incubations of fresh substrates amended with acetylene were used to estimate in situ denitrification potentials which varied from 0.05–3.19 g N g–1 d–1 for organic and sandy sediments. Denitrification potentials were highly correlated with initial nitrate content of substrate samples implying that low nitrate levels in ground water and riparian substrates may be an important factor in controlling denitrification rates. The efficiency of nitrate removal in spring-fed drainage lines is also limited by short water residence times of < 1 h within the riparian zone. These data suggest that routes of ground water movement and substrate characteristics are important in determining nitrate depletion within stream riparian areas.  相似文献

Periphyton growth and diatom community structure in a cooling water pond   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Periphyton (Aufwuchs) accumulation was measured on artificial substrates in a pond in central Finland which receives warm cooling-water effluent from a power plant. The growth of periphyton was generally more rapid on the substrates during the first two weeks of colonization near the inflow of the warm water effluent than in the middle of the pond. The maximum accumulation of periphyton was in spring and autumn (dry weight maximum at warm effluent was in spring 3.5 mg DW cm−2,2.65 mg AFDW cm−2; chlorophyll a maximum 3.96 μg cm−2 was found in autumn at pond-middle station). During mid-winter months the growth was strongly limited by solar radiation, but the growth was also slow at both stations in the summer months, when the power plant was out of operation. The periphyton accumulation rate was fastest near the water surface and decreased rapidly with increasing depth. A total of 167 diatom species were found in periphyton samples. However, most species were rare; many of the dominants were common to both plankton and periphyton. Species similarity analyses (Jaccard's similarity) between 10 different diatom communities (including periphyton from 9 different types of substrates and phytoplankton) indicated low similarity index values although differences between communities were not significant.  相似文献

Summary The body temperature of free-ranging Andean toadsBufo spinulosus was measured either directly or radiotelemetrically during two 15-day periods at 3200 m elevation in the Mantaro Valley, Central Perú. All toads attempted to maintain their diurnal sum of body temperature within a narrow range. Consequently thermoregulatory behaviour differed according to cloud cover and precipitation. If the sky was clear, toads emerged from their hiding place and exposed themselves to solar radiation during 3–5 h in the morning. Core temperature increased up to 15° C above the air temperature in shade and reached maximum values of about 32° C. At air temperatures (in sun) exceeding 29° C, toads maintained body temperatures below 32° C by evaporative cooling. Following heliothermic heating during the moring toads retreated to the shade, thereby decreasing body temperature below air temperature. Under overcast sky toads remained exposed during the whole day displaying body temperatures at or slightly above ambient levels. Quantitative models to predict the core temperature of toads under the different weather conditions demonstrated that the substrate temperature was the main energy source accounting for 64.6–77.9% of total variance whereas air temperature was of minor importance (1.5–4.4%). The unexplained variance was probably due to evaporative cooling. The volume of urine stored into the urinary bladder of toads varied diurnally; during basking in the morning hours most bladders contained large volumes of urine, whereas during the afternoon the bladders were mostly empty. The bladder contents probably serve as water reserves during basking when evaporative water loss was high. Toads preferred sites that provided shady hiding places as well as sun-exposed bare soil within a radius of 5 m. However, they frequently changed their centers of activity and moved to other sites in 20–70 m distance after periods of 2–5 days. The helio-and thigmothermic behaviour of the Andean toad permits the maintenance of high core temperature during morning which probably increases the digestion rate and accelerate growth. Evaporative cooling and preference of shady sites were employed to regulate body temperature below the morning levels in response to the constraints of water balance. Periodic changes between thigmothermic behaviour and locomotory activity during the night maintains body temperature above air temperature and prolongs the period of food uptake.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. H. Summary The degree of activity of H. virgaureae in the field is largely dependent on air temperature, solar radiation, and wind velocity. Solar radiation increases body temperature above ambient. The butterfly orientates its back towards the sun and exposes the dorsal surface of the wings. At high temperatures they close the wings thereby minimizing the surface exposed to the sun. The optimal body temperature lies around 35°C as was indicated by laboratory experiments. In cloudy and cool to fairly warm conditions the butterfly is inactive. In sunshine the butterfly basks at low radiation intensities or low air temperatures while feeding (in males also flying) predominates at full sunshine or very high air temperatures (around 30°C). Males fly 5–10 times as much as females. A change from unfavourable to favourable weather is followed by an immediate increase in activity of the butterfly, which enables the butterfly to utilize short periods of sunshine.  相似文献

Eight water monitor lizards, Varanus s. salvator, were captured; four individuals from an oil palm estate on the Malayan peninsula, and four from fresh water-deficient Tulai island 65 km off-shore in the South China Sea. They were fitted with a radio transmitter attached to a thermistor which was inserted into the cloaca of the animals and released. The heating rate during basking was measured as 0.117 and 0.118 °C·min-1 while the daily cloacal temperature fluctuated between 29.5–37.3 °C. Cloacal temperature was measured on other individuals caught at random times during the day, which revealed a considerable daily and individual variation. The average cloacal temperature during activity was 30.4 °C. The peak activity appeared when body temperature was 31 °C. Thermoregulation by behavioural means included cooling in water and reducing heat loss at night by sleeping in burrows. The cooling rate for two individuals when submerged in 29 °C water was 0.308 and 0.340 °C·min-1. There appeared to be a strong correlation between ambient temperature and cloacal temperature.Abbreviations bw body weight - T a ambient temperature - T a body temperature - T c cloacal temperature - TOP Timor Oil Palm Estate - TUL Tulai Island  相似文献

Summary The influence of elevational changes on plant transpiration was evaluated using leaf energy balance equations and well-known elevational changes in the physical parameters that influence water vapor diffusion. Simulated transpirational fluxes for large leaves with low and high stomatal resistances to water vapor diffusion were compared to small leaves with identical stomatal resistances at elevations ranging from sea level to 4 km. The specific influence of various air temperature lapse rates was also tested. Validation of the simulated results was accomplished by comparing actual field measurements taken at a low elevation (300 m) desert site with similar measurements for a high elevation (2,560 m) mountain research site. Close agreement was observed between predicted and measured values of transpiration for the environmental and leaf parameters tested.Substantial increases in solar irradiation and the diffusion coefficient for water vapor in air (D wv) occurred with increasing elevation, while air and leaf temperatures, the water vapor concentration difference between the leaf and air, longwave irradiation, and the thermal conductivity coefficient for heat in air decreased with increasing elevation. These changes resulted in temperatures for sunlit leaves that were further above air temperature at higher elevations, especially for large leaves. For large leaves with low stomatal resistances, transpirational fluxes for low-elevation desert plants were close to those predicted for high-elevation plants even though the sunlit leaf temperatures of these mountain plants were over 10°C cooler. Simulating conditions with a low air temperature lapse rate (0.003° C m-1 and 0.004° C m-1) resulted in predicted transpirational fluxes that were greater than those calculated for the desert site. Transpiration for smaller leaves decreased with elevation for all lapse rates tested (0.003° C m-1 to 0.010° C m-1). However, transpirational fluxes at higher elevations were considerably greater than expected for all leaves, especially larger leaves, due to the strong influence of increased solar heating and a greater D wv. These results are discussed in terms of similarities in leaf structure and plant habit observed among low-elevation desert plants and high-elevation alpine and subalpine plants.  相似文献

We describe the seasonal patterns and frequency distributions of meteorological and hydrographic conditions on a windward, shoaling reef flat at Punta Galeta, Panama (9° 24 N lat.), between 1974 and 1985. The factors monitored were wind speed, wind direction, air temperature, rainfall, solar radiation, water level, water temperature, and salinity. All conditions showed strong seasonal periodicity; however, the timing, duration, and amplitude of the seasonal fluctuations differed among years. The greatest variation occurred in 1981 and 1982, leading into an El Niño event. Emergence of the reef flat and extremes of water temperature were the most apparent physiological stresses; both were dependent on mean water levels. The seasonal pattern of emergence time was inversely related to mean water level. Extreme water temperatures only occurred during low water tevels, ranging between 22° to >37°C in depths <15 cm, but staying between 25°C and 30.9°C in depths <35 cm. Water temperatures averaged 1.5°C higher than air temperatures. Although rainfall was 200 to 400 cm year-1, salinity remained between 24 and 36 ppt, with more than 98% of the records 30 ppt. The relationship of water temperature to depth is consistent with the hypothesis that the physical environment becomes more stressful when a reef reaches sea level and forms a shoaling platform. Correlations between environment and tree alpha-diversity in New Zealand's primary forests were examined using an extensive quantitative dataset (14 540 plots). Generalised additive models were used to examine relationships between species richness and temperature, solar radiation, root-zone moisture deficit, relative humidity, lithology, drainage, and plot size for all trees (112 species), and separately for broadleaved trees (88 species), conifers (17), and the genus Nothofagus (4). Diversity both for all tree species and for broadleaved trees was predicted to be highest on sites with high temperatures, high solar radiation, and high soil and atmospheric moisture, and on sedimentary and basaltic substrates. Highest conifer diversity was predicted on sites with intermediate temperatures, low solar radiation, high root-zone and atmospheric moisture, and rhyolitic and Quaternary substrates, particularly where drainage was impeded. Highest Nothofagus diversity was predicted for sites combining low temperatures, high solar radiation, high root-zone moisture but low atmospheric moisture, and on granitic substrates. Differences in diversity between the species groups on different lithologies are interpreted as rejecting both the effects of variation in large-scale disturbance histories, and the effects of confounding environmental factors associated with particular substrates. There were also significant interactions between species groups: both broadleaved tree and conifer richness were predicted to be lower on sites where one or more Nothofagus spp. — all of which have marked patchiness in their distribution — are present. Although these results are consistent with the hypothesis that tree diversity is highest on sites conducive to high productivity, history is also indicated as an important determinant of tree diversity in New Zealand.  相似文献

Orobanche aegyptiaca seeds were germinated at a range of water potentials and temperatures and the progress of germination within the seed population was modelled. Base water potentials (at which the rate of progress towards germination is zero) varied between individual seeds according to a normal distribution with a mean of -1.96 MPa and standard deviation of 0.33 MPa at 20C. Contrary to the underlying assumption of the hydrothermal time model in the literature, the median base water potential varied significantly with temperature, being c. -2 MPa at 14-23C and increasing at both higher and lower temperatures. Thermal times to germination also varied according to a normal distribution between individual seeds with a mean of 49°Cd and standard deviation of 18°Cd in water. The median thermal time to germination varied with water potential. Again, however, an assumption of the hydrothermal time model was found to be invalid since the base temperature for rate of germination also varied significantly with water potential. The relationship of both base temperature and thermal time to water potential were linear such that germination progress curves in 33 different hydrothermal environments (8-26°C and 0 to -1.2 MPa) could be described according to a new modified thermal time model which accounted for 78% of the variation in the data. Keywords: Water stress, temperature, Orobanche aegyptiaca, germination rate, hydrothermal time models.   相似文献

Five anaerobic proteolytic bacteria were isolated from water bodies of Leh, India, where the ambient temperature varies from –25 to 25 °C. Isolates showed growth at all temperatures ranging from 5 to 37 °C except SPL-4 and SPL-5 which showed no growth at 5 °C. The cultures could grow and produce proteases on various protein substrates and the yield varied with the substrates. Two of the cultures showed the presence of spores. Acetate was the dominant VFA during hydrolysis of protein substrates.  相似文献

The seasonal variation of phytoplankton photosynthesis was measured with 14C-method in a warmed ice-free pond in central Finland. Simultaneously with in situ measurements the photosynthesis was also measured in an incubator with different water temperatures and constant light (ca. 16 W m–2). The total annual photosynthesis was 57.2 C m–2 a–1. The portion of the winter and spring production of the annual photosynthesis was 18.4%, that of the autumn production ws 17.4%. Thus 64.3% of the total annual phytoplankton photosynthesis occurred in the three summer months. The range of the daily integrated photosynthesis per unit area was 1.9—563 mg C m–2d–1. The photosynthetic rate per unit chlorophyll a varied in situ from 0.94 to 33.1 mg C (mg chl. a)–1 d–1. The highest value was measured in the beginning of July and the lowest in mid-January. The photosynthetic rate increased in situ exponentially with increasing water temperature. In the incubator the highest photosynthetic rate values were also found in July and August (at+20 °C) when the phytoplankton population was increasing and the minimum values occurred after every diatom maximum both in spring and autumn. Light was a limiting factor for photosynthesis from September to Mid-January, low water temperature was a limiting factor from late January through May. The efficiency of the photosynthesis varied between 0.1 and 0.7% of P.A.R. According to the incubator experiments the Q10 values for the photosynthesis were 2.45 and 2.44 for the winter population between 1 and 10° C and for the summer population between 5 and 15° C, respectively, but the Q10 values decrease at the higher temperatures. The main effect of the warm effluents on the yearly photosynthesis was the increase of production in spring months due to the lack of ice cover. However, the increase of total annual phytoplankton photosynthesis was only ca. 10–15%, because the water temperature was during the spring months below 10° C.  相似文献

The microbial consortia from produced water at two different oil fields in Alaska (Kuparuk) and the North Sea (Ninian) were investigated for sulfate-reducing and methanogenic activity over a range of temperatures and for a variety of substrates. The consortia were sampled on site, and samples were either incubated on site at 60(deg)C with various substrates or frozen for later incubation and analyses. Temperature influenced the rates of sulfate reduction, hydrogen sulfide production, and substrate oxidation, as well as the cell morphology. The highest rates of sulfate reduction and substrate oxidation were found between 50 and 60(deg)C. Formate and n-butyrate were the most favorable electron donors at any tested temperature. Acetate was utilized at 35(deg)C but not at 50 or 70(deg)C and was produced at 60(deg)C. This indicates that the high levels of acetate found in produced water from souring oil formations are due mainly to an incomplete oxidation of volatile fatty acids to acetate. The cell size distribution of the microbial consortium indicated a nonuniform microbial composition in the original sample from the Kuparuk field. At different temperatures, different microbial morphologies and physiologies were observed. Methane-producing activity at thermophilic temperatures (60(deg)C) was found only for the Kuparuk consortium when hydrogen and carbon dioxide were present. No methane production from acetate was observed. Suppression of methanogenic activity in the presence of sulfate indicated a competition with sulfate-reducing bacteria for hydrogen.  相似文献

The effects of solar UV-B radiation, in combination with elevated temperature (4 °C ) and CO2 (680 L L-1 concentration, on sunflower and maize seedlings were studied from May to August in 1991 at the research station Quinta de São Pedro in Portugal (38.7°N). The ambient solar radiation of Portugal was reduced to levels of Central European latitudes by using the ozone filter technique. This radiation served as control, while the ambient solar radiation of Portugal was to simulate intense UV-B treatment (+30%). All plants were grown up to 18 days in 4 climate controlled growth chambers simulating a daily course of temperature with Tmax=28 °C or 32 °C , resp., and ambient CO2 concentrations (340 L L-1); in one chamber the CO2 concentration was twice as high (680 L L-1). Under intense UV-B and at 28 °C (Tmax) all growth parameters (height, leaf area, fresh and dry weight, stem elongation rate, relative growth rate) of sunflower and maize seedlings were reduced down to 35% as compared to controls. An increase in growing temperature by 4 °C , alone or in combination with doubled CO2, compensated or even overcompensated the UV-B effect so that the treated plants were comparable to controls. Chlorophyll content, on a leaf area basis, increased under intense UV-B radiation. This increase was compensated by lower leaf areas, resulting in comparable chlorophyll contents. Similar to growth, also the net photosynthetic rates of sunflower and maize seedlings were reduced down to 29% by intense UV-B calculated on a chlorophyll basis. This reduction was compensated by an increased temperature. Doubling of CO2 concentration had effects only on sunflower seedlings in which the photosynthetic rates were higher than in the controls. Dark respiration rates of the seedlings were not influenced by any experimental condition. Transpiration and water use efficiency (wue) were not influenced by intense UV-B. Higher temperatures led to higher transpiration rates and lower water use efficiencies, resp.. Doubling of CO2 reduced the transpiration rate drastically while for wue maximum values were recorded.  相似文献

Darters represent a substantial radiation of freshwater fishes that live in close association with the substrate in North American streams and rivers. A key feature of any darter species is therefore its ability to stay in place or to “hold station” in flowing water. Here, we quantify the station‐holding performance of two morphologically divergent darter species, the fantail darter Etheostoma flabellare and the Missouri saddled darter Etheostoma tetrazonum. We also characterize the primary kinematic responses of the two species when holding station in flow speeds ranging from 4 to 56 cm s?1 in a flow tank on either plexiglas or small rock substrate. We then present a series of hypotheses about the potential hydrodynamic and functional consequences of the observed postural changes and the links among morphology, posture, and station‐holding performance. On both substrates, E. tetrazonum was able to hold station at higher flow speeds than E. flabellare. On rocks, E. tetrazonum slipped at an average speed of 55.7 cm s?1 whereas E. flabellare slipped at 40.2 cm s?1. On plexiglas, E. tetrazonum slipped at an average speed of 24.7 cm s?1 whereas E. flabellare slipped at 23.1 cm s?1. We measured body and fin positions of the two species from individual frames of high‐speed video while holding station on rocks and plexiglas. We found that on both substrates, the two species generally exhibited similar kinematic responses to increasing flow: the head was lowered and angled downward, the back became more arched, and the median and caudal fin rays contracted as water flow speed increased. The ventral halves of the pectoral fins were also expanded and the dorsal halves contracted. These changes in posture and fin position likely increase negative lift forces thereby increasing substrate contact forces and reducing the probability of downstream slip.

Diurnal variation in the rate of methane emission and its relation to water table depth and macro climate was studied in several plant communities within an acid,Sphagnum dominated, mixed mire in Northern Sweden. Provided that diurnal variation in solar radiation and air temperature occurred, methane fluxes differed during day and night. Diurnal patterns in methane emission rates were found to differ among mire plant communities. In relatively dry plant communities (ridges, minerotrophic lawn), the average nighttime emission rates were 2–3 times higher than the daytime rates during the two periods with high diurnal variation in solar radiation and air temperature. Methane emission was significantly (p < 0.05) related to solar radiation and soil temperature at depths of 5 and 10 cm at all sampling points in the dry plant communities. In the wetter plant communities, no significant difference between daytime and nighttime average methane emission rates were found even though methane emissions were significantly related with radiation and soil temperature at approximately 70% of the sampling points. The increased emission rate for methane at night in the comparatively dry plant communities was probably caused by an inhibition of methane oxidation, owing to the lower nighttime temperatures or to a delay in the supply of root-exuded substrate for the anaerobic bacteria, or by both. The pattern observed in the wet plant communities indicated that methane production were positively related either to soil temperature or light-regulated root exudation.  相似文献

This study was carried out to determine upper (CTMax) and lower (CTMin) thermal tolerance, acclimation response ratio (ARR) and thermal tolerance polygon of the European sea bass inhabiting the Iskenderun Bay, the most southeasterly part of the Mediterranean Sea, at three acclimation temperatures (15, 20, 25 °C). Acclimation temperature significantly affected the CTMin and CTMax values of the fish. At 0.3 °C min−1 cooling or heating rate, CTMin ranged from 4.10 to 6.77 °C and CTMax ranged from 33.23 to 35.95 °C in three acclimation temperatures from 15 to 25 °C. Thermal tolerance polygon for the juveniles at the tested acclimation temperatures was calculated to be 296.14 °C2. In general, the current data show that our sea bass population possesses acclimation response ratio (ARR) values (0.25-0.27) similar to some tropical species. The cold tolerance values attained for this species ranged from 4.10 to 6.77 °C, suggesting that cold winter temperatures may not pose danger during the culture of European sea bass in deep ponds or high water exchange rate systems. Upper thermal tolerance is more of a problem in the southern part of the Mediterranean as maximum water temperature in ponds may sometimes exceed 33-34 °C, during which underground cool-water should be used to lower ambient water temperature in the mid-summer. For successful culture of sea bass in ponds, temperature should be maintained around 25 °C throughout the year and this can be managed under greenhousing systems using underground well-waters, commonly available in the region.  相似文献
