Jach, R., Machaniec, E. & Uchman, A. 2011: The trace fossil Nummipera eocenica from the Tatra Mountains, Poland: morphology and palaeoenvironmental implications. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 342–355. The tubular trace fossil Nummipera eocenica Hölder 1989 occurs in a single stratigraphical horizon in Eocene nummulitic limestones of the Tatra Mountains, Poland. The wall of N. eocenica is built of Discocyclina and Nummulities (larger foraminifera) tests, very rarely of the Ditrupa (Polychaeta) tube fragments, bivalve shell fragments, echinoid spines and coralline algae. Morphotype are distinguished on the basis of wall composition and structure. Morphotype A is dominated by fusiform Discocyclina tests, which were preferentially selected by the trace makers for construction of a well‐constructed and resistant wall. Morphotype B contains more robust tests of Nummulites, while morphotype C is dominated by saddle‐shaped tests of Discocyclina. Nummipera eocenica was produced during a period of seafloor stabilization caused by a deepening. The succession of the morphotypes B, A reflects diminishing energy and increasing water depth. Probably morphotype C represents even lower energy environment than morphotype A. The trace fossil is interpreted as a domichnion, which wall was constructed for protection. The trace maker can be considered between polychaetes and crustaceans; however, comparisons to the closest recent analogues, the polychaete Diopatra cuprea or alpheid shrimps, are not satisfactory. □Bartonian, burrow, Carpathians, large foraminifera, trace fossils.  相似文献

An ellipsoidal chamber which is composed of a very thin organic layer and emplaced in an enlargement continuing upwards into a vertical burrow is found in thin sections of a fluvial channel‐fill sandstone bed of the Lower Cretaceous Jinju Formation in South Korea. Micromorphological analysis demonstrates that the ellipsoidal chamber is attributable to Fictovichnus. It can be interpreted as a free‐standing wall of a wasp cocoon attributable to Fictovichnus sciuttoi or Fictovichnus aragon, or an organic lining of chafer beetle or weevil pupation chamber attributable to Fictovichnus gobiensis. The analysis further shows that the vertical burrow and enlargement appear to reflect chafer and weevil larval behaviour, but the arrangement of the chamber within the enlargement appears to be the same as a wasp cocoon inside a cell. Such uncertainties of ichnotaxonomic assignment and putative producer suggest that the Jinju specimen may reflect an aberrant pupation behaviour of coleopterans or hymenopterans. This Early Cretaceous specimen may be the earliest record of an insect pupation structure probably associated with a burrow. Its atypical morphologies and very rare occurrence in a channel sandstone bed without other evidence of pedogenesis suggest that the Jinju specimen was constructed in incipiently and briefly exposed sediment, unlike typical insect nesting structures constructed in soil.  相似文献

A palaeocommunity of large Conichnus conicus, a conical, cone-in-cone shaped burrow, created by sea anemones, occurs in medium-grained, crossbedded, well-sorted sandstone in the middle part of the Cretaceous Guneri Member of the Bhuj Formation in India. The trace fossil Conichnus is considered to be a common element of the Skolithos ichnofacies and is interpreted to reflect equilibrium movement in response to substrate aggradation. In the present study, three different varieties of Conichnus conicus are distinguished based on morphology and internal fabric. Community dynamics and burrowing behavior are revealed by inter-burrow relationships, burrow initiation levels and sedimentology. Three types of behavior are envisaged: retrusive equilibrium, protrusive equilibrium response, and escape behavior. Palaeocommunity dynamics show that the tracemakers consisted of only adult organisms that initiated burrows during neap tides and are adapted to feed effectively during weak flow conditions. The occurrence of Conichnus palaeocommunity in the Guneri Member indicates the tidal conditions in a fully marine setting. Results presented herein may aid in the understanding of palaeocommunity dynamics in other shallow marine sequences.  相似文献

Monoterpenoids from wood of Pinus quadrifolia and Pinus monophylla from south of the San Jacinto Mountains in southern California were analysed by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC). The number of needles per fascicle, the number of resin canals, and the number of abaxial and adaxial stomatal rows in the needles were determined. Percentages of mycrene, α-pinene, and to a minor extent of camphene, β-pinene, limonene, and β-phellandrene, the above mentioned morphological characteristics and previously obtained data were all used for identification and characterisation of species intermediacy in the San Jacinto area. It was concluded that many P. quadrifolia trees in the mixed Buck Ridge stand and some trees in two pure stands of the same area were hybrids and that sympatric and to a lesser extent allopatric introgression of P. monophylla into P. quadrifolia takes place in the San Jacinto region. Introgression of P. quadrifolia into P. monophylla could not be demonstrated.  相似文献

The discovery of the network trace fossil Multina isp. in the Luning Formation of central Nevada provides new insight into the depositional setting of the Shaly Limestone Member of the Luning Formation. The ichnofossils occur in tabular mudstone beds deposited on a shelf environment or open carbonate platform. Although Multina resembles Paleodictyon, as both share polygonal burrow nets and both frequently occur in deep-water habitats, Multina is less regular and has other morphological traits such as crossing burrow branches not seen in Paleodictyon or Protopaleodictyon.  相似文献

遗迹化石研究对揭示奥陶纪生物大辐射事件期间, 底栖生物在陆棚区定居的具体过程有重要意义。Trichophycus在寒武系–奥陶系有广泛报道, 但是针对其时空分布、演化轨迹、造迹生物属性和生态等的系统总结和讨论较少。本文首次在贵州仁怀地区下–中奥陶统湄潭组内陆棚沉积中报道了遗迹属Trichophycus。该遗迹化石由宽的U型、平直或弯曲的潜穴管以前进式方式构成潜穴系统。底部和侧部以纵向排列的、平行或近似平行的抓痕为特征, 发育后退式蹼状构造, 不发育衬里。上述特征支持将其划归到T. venosus Miller, 1879。湄潭组中Trichophycus可能为一类未知的节肢动物居群所建造的觅食/居住遗迹。地质历史中Trichophycus的造迹生物来自多个类群, 是行为趋同的产物。作为Glossifungites遗迹相的常见分子, 它的出现可能指示沉积物的初始硬结或存在较短的沉积间断。Trichophycus相对狭窄的沉积相分布区间表明它可以作为浅海固底的指相遗迹化石。作为先锋遗迹属, Trichophycus的地史分布表明, 全球各板块底栖造迹生物在陆棚区的定居是不等时的。湄潭组中Trichophycus的出现, 是华南扬子区奥陶纪生物大辐射事件期间, 底栖造迹生物探索陆棚区生态空间的一个缩影。  相似文献

The Dinosaur Canyon Member of the Moenave Formation, of Late Triassic to Early Jurassic (Rhaetian-Hettangian) age, consists predominantly of sandstones and mudstones deposited by sheet and channelized flow and by eolian processes. We document several previously undescribed biogenic structures in these strata. At one location, eolian dune sandstone hosts the lined, smooth-walled burrow Palaeophycus heberti (Saporta); these may be the nesting burrows of small sand wasps, or alternatively, the burrows of sand-treader camel crickets. Eolian dune facies that host abundant rhizoliths also are typically bioturbated. Circular markings that are convex in epirelief are assigned to Pustulichnus gregarious Ekdale and Picard. Unlined, non-ornamented burrows are unassigned. We speculate that both of these also were formed by the burrowing activity of one of the many species of sand wasp. Rhizoliths are particularly prominent at the tops of eolian dune sandstone beds and locally may host termite nests. Stabilization of the landscape by plants permitted pedogenic alteration of the sediments.  相似文献

This study presents a detailed facies analysis and paleodepth reconstruction of a coral-rich mixed siliciclastic-carbonate system Burdigalian in age, outcropping in the northern sector of Sardinia (Capo Testa). Excellent exposures of continuous sea-cliff outcrops around the southwestern and northeastern area of Capo Testa promontory allowed us to: (1) trace stratigraphic surfaces; (2) document stratal geometries; (3) discern details of the lithofacies and, (4) reconstruct the paleodepths of the different depositional environments. A total of seven sedimentary facies has been recognized and interpreted: siliciclastic conglomerate and coarse bioclastic sandstone (F1), fine- to medium-grained hybrid sandstone (F2, scleractinian coral domestone (F3), bioclastic packstone to floatstone with platy Porites (F4), red algae floatstone to rudstone (F5), larger benthic foraminifers (LBF) bioclastic rudstone floatstone in a packstone matrix (F6), molluscan floatstone in a bioclastic packstone matrix (F7). The investigated system is characterized by nearshore to shoreface deposits with a conspicuous terrigenous content that grades seaward into deeper zones where coral patch-reefs developed in association with adjacent areas colonized by seagrass meadows. The more distal facies are constituted by scattered encrusting tabular colonies of Porites in growth position occurring in a deeper and lower-energy environment. The paleodepth interval that is observed in the Capo Testa outcrop ranges from 0 to 50 m.  相似文献

The fossil burrow Dolopichnus, capped by an ash layer, was collected ~0.6 m below the Permian–Triassic Boundary at the Lung Cam section in North Vietnam. The burrow occurs at the top of Bed 9, directly below the stepped extinction in foraminifera that marks initiation of the global perturbations related to the end-Permian extinction event. Dolopichnus is a plug-shaped burrow, possessing lining and fills. This specimen was found capped by an undisrupted bentonite layer. The main chamber has internal structure throughout indicative of benthic organisms overcoming living pressures of repeated ash falls, which can be applied to paleoenvironmental research across different regions and times, including the recent.  相似文献

Limestones of the Upper Oligocene Antigua Formation of Antigua contain unusual burrows filled with the densely packed debris of shelly benthos. Unlined burrows (Planolites?) in deep-water biofacies at Half Moon Bay, parish of Saint Philip, are packed with a monospecific assemblage of large benthic foraminiferans (Lepidocyclina canelli Lemoine &; Douvillé) and a single brachiopod valve, Tichosina sp. A similar burrow in shallower-water biofacies at Hughes Point, parish of Saint Philip, is packed with echinoderm debris and, particularly, test fragments of the spatangoid echinoid Lovenia n. sp. Fragments of the same echinoid fill a conical burrow, Bergaueria isp. The latter is probably a physical accumulation, the common fragments of echinoid being washed into an empty burrow. In contrast, the infill of Planolites? isp. is more likely to be an accumulation mediated by the burrower.  相似文献

Abstract

Integrated ichnology, sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy of the Lower Quartzite Member to the Arkosic Sandstone Member of the Koti Dhaman Formation (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 4), Tal Group, Nigali Dhar Syncline, Lesser Himalayan lithotectonic zone are presented. Trilobite traces of Gondwanan affinity i.e., Cruziana salomonis, Cruziana fasciculata, Rusophycus dispar and Rusophycus burjensis are recorded along with Arenicolites isp. and Skolithos isp. from the Lower Quartzite Member. A rich and diverse ichnoassemblage attributed to the Cruziana ichnofacies is described for the first time from the Arkosic Sandstone Member of the same formation. Seven ichnofossil assemblages, i.e., Cruziana-Rusophycus, Planolites-Palaeophycus, Cruziana problematica, Diplichnites, Cochlichnus anguineus, Bergaueria perata and Psammichnites gigas have been recognized in the Lower Quartzite to Arkosic Sandstone members of the Koti Dhaman Formation. Seven sedimentary facies i.e., sandstone–shale facies (FT1), cross-bedded (trough and planar) sandstone (FT2), bedded sandstone facies (FT3), shale facies (FT4), shale–sandstone facies (FT5), shale-rippled sandstone facies (FT6) and planar and trough cross-laminated sandstone (FT7) and four facies associations FA1-FA4 are identified in the Koti Dhaman Formation. The formation contains shallowing upward parasequences of a tidal flat complex. Overall, two major events are recognized: i) the break in sedimentation between the Lower Quartzite Member and the overlying Shale Member probably related to forced-regressive event and ii) the facies shift from FT6 to FT7 of the Arkosic Sandstone Member represents an erosive transgressive event; the surface is interpreted as wave ravinement surface, which also serves as a sequence boundary. Integrated ichnology, sedimentology and sequence stratigraphic studies indicate that the Lower Quartzite Member was deposited in a shallow subtidal sand sheet complex and tidal flat complex; the Shale Member was deposited in a mud flat setting of a tidal flat complex, and the Arkosic Sandstone Member in a mixed-flat (tidal flat complex) to sand sheet complex front and margin (subtidal sand sheet complex). Overall, the lower to middle part of the Koti Dhaman Formation represents a tide-dominated shallow subtidal–intertidal to mud-flat subenvironments of the tidal flat complex. A palaeogeographic reconstruction of lower Cambrian (516–514?Ma) is presented based on the distribution of trilobite traces from the Lesser Himalaya and the Bikaner–Nagaur area of Peninsular India (eastern Gondwana), Egypt, Jordan, Turkey (western Gondwana) and Canada (Avalonia).  相似文献

Lithophaga bisulcata is the most common Caribbean and Atlanticlithophagine and is the only species of the genus known to occurfrequently in both living and dead coral. The abundance in livingcorals is non-random and variable. Most common hosts are Siderastereasiderea and Stephanocoenia michelini. The bivalves are moreabundant in their preferred hosts than in dead coral. Individualsfrom the two habitats are indistinguishable in shell shape,musculature and size of boring and posterior pallia! glands,indicating a single population. Boreholes differ in the twohabitats with respect to size and lining. Linings are formedat the "inactive" end of the burrow; therefore living coralinhabitants line the anterior end of the burrow and dead coralborers line the posterior end. Abstract

Peculiar meniscate burrows with three sediment cords occur in early to middle Miocene tidal-flat deposits of southwestern Japan. Two of the cords are situated at the bottom and the other is at its center. Detailed observations of the burrow structures and comparative neoichnological studies of modern spatangoid burrows in a tidal flat revealed that the former two were true drainage tubes and the latter was fecal in origin. The trace fossil was thus assigned to the ichnogenus Scolicia. Based on these findings, a new ichnospecies Scolicia shirahamensis isp. nov. has been described here. The central sediment cord is seemingly identical to the drainage tube of the ichnogenus Bichordites, another ichnogenus that has been commonly ascribed to a fossil spatangoid burrow, similar to Scolicia. Careless ichnogeneric identification of a spatangoid burrow, based only on the central sediment cord, therefore, may produce an incorrect identification.  相似文献

A methodology for trace fossil identification using burrowing signatures is tested by evaluating ancient and modern lungfish and crayfish burrows and comparing them to previously undescribed burrows in a stratigraphic interval thought to contain both lungfish and crayfish burrows. Permian burrows that bear skeletal remains of the lungfish Gnathorhiza, from museum collections, were evaluated to identify unique burrow morphologies that could be used to distinguish lungfish from crayfish burrows when fossil remains are absent. The lungfish burrows were evaluated for details of the burrowing mechanism preserved in the burrow morphologies together forming burrowing signatures and were compared to new burrows in the Chinle Formation of western Colorado to test the methodology of using burrow signatures to identify unknown burrows.

Permian lungfish aestivation burrows show simple, nearly vertical, unbranched architectures and relatively smooth surficial morphologies with characteristic quasi‐horizontal striae on the burrow walls and vertical striae on the bulbous terminus. Burrow lengths do not exceed 0.5 m. In contrast, modern and ancient crayfish burrows exhibit simple to highly complex architectures with highly textured surficial morphologies. Burrow lengths may reach 4 to 5 m.

Burrow morphologies unlike those identified in Gnathorhiza aestivation burrows were found in four burrow groups from museum collections. Two of these groups exhibit simple architectures and horizontal striae that were greater in sinuosity and magnitude, respectively. One of these burrows contains the remains of Lysoro‐phus, but the burrow surface reveals no reliable surficial characteristics. It is not clear whether Lysorophus truly burrowed or merely occupied a pre‐existing structure. The other two groups exhibit surficial morphologies similar to those found on modern and ancient crayfish burrows and may provide evidence of freshwater crayfish in the Permian.

Burrows from the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation in western Colorado exhibit simple to moderately complex architectural morphologies, ranging from predominantly vertical, unbranched, with little or no chamber development to predominantly vertical, few branches, and with minor chamber development. Surficial burrow morphologies are moderate to highly textured. The burrows have scrape marks, scratch marks, mud and lag‐liners, knobby surfaces, pleopod striae, and body impressions.

Although no fossil remains of the burrowing organism were found within or associated with the Chinle burrows from western Colorado, the similarity of architectural and surficial burrow morphologies to those in the Chinle of Canyonlands, Utah and to modern crayfish burrows, clearly indicates that the Colorado burrows are the product of burrowing crayfish rather than lungfish. Evaluation of burrowing signatures preserved in the architectural and surficial burrow morphologies is a very useful tool to compare and contrast Chinle burrows from different regions on the Colorado Plateau. Documentation of crayfish burrows in the Chinle of Utah and Colorado strongly suggests that other large‐diameter Chinle burrows elsewhere on the Colorado Plateau and in stratigraphically equivalent units may also be the product of crayfish activity.  相似文献

A new ichnogenus, Vagorichnus, is figured and described from Jurassic lacustrine turbidites of the Anyao Formation, Henan Province, Central China. Vagorichnus consists of complex burrow systems composed of discontinuous curved to meandering segments in which irregular networks are formed. The ichnospecies V. anyao covers burrow systems characterized by constricted and irregularly annulated segments, and ridge‐like knobs. Although traces are preserved as hypichnial ridges on the sole of turbidite sandstones, several lines of evidence indicate that these ichnofossils record the activity of a post‐event infauna. Vagorichnus occurs as discrete and compound ichnotaxa. In the latter case, it grades into Gordia and Tuberculichnus. Old collections from the Ordovician of the Barrandian area (Czech Republic) have yielded a probable vertical burrow that contains several dozen specimens of the pliomerid trilobite Placo‐paria (Placoparia) cambriensis Hicks, some of them enrolled. The fill of the burrow (classified as ?Skolithos isp.) also contains minute ovoid pellets corresponding to the ichnotaxon Tomaculum cf. problematicum Groom. The enrollment of a portion of the trilobite exoskeletons might reflect a defensive response. The pellets may be interpreted as fecal material or, less probably, as eggs. The exoskeletons and the pellets might have been mechanically trapped into the open burrow, or their concentration may have resulted from biological relationships between the tracemaker and the trilobites.  相似文献

The upper Cretaceous of the eastern part of the Ksour Mountains (Western Saharan Atlas, Algeria) is classically subdivided into three fossiliferous lithostratigraphic formations: El Rhelida (lower Cenomanian), Mdaouer (lower-middle Cenomanian) and Rhoundjaïa (upper Cenomanian-lower Turonian). The western part of the Ksour Mountains, which is less documented and poorly known, is here the subject of a detailed sedimentological and palaeontological study. Near Hassi Djeifa locality (Forthassa) the upper Cretaceous is represented by the upper part of Mdaouer Formation and by the lowermost part of Rhoundjaïa Formation. The deposits attributed to the Mdaouer Formation are composed of reddish or green marlstone intercalated by biolaminated limestone, bioclastic limestone with gastropods and bivalves, and sandstone. The selachians (Mafdetia tibniensis, Baharipristis bastetiae), pycnodontiform fishes, and ostracod fauna (Damonella spp., Ilyocypris? sp., Cypridea sp., Paracypria? sp.) coming from marly beds are studied in detail. The two selachian species (Order of Rajiformes) were so far restricted to the Early Cenomanian of Egypt. Our sedimentological and palaeontological data support a probable Early Cenomanian age of the studied deposits and indicate a coastal plain palaeoenvironment continually influenced by the action of tide.  相似文献

Microscale oxygen distribution in various invertebrate burrow walls   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Profiles of dissolved oxygen were measured in pore waters of unburrowed sediment and the burrow walls of seven invertebrate dwellings. Burrows studied include those of Corophium volutator, Heteromastus filiformis, Arenicola marina, Saccoglossus bromophenolosus, Clymenella sp., Hemigrapsus oregonensis and Cirriformia luxuriosa all from mudflats in Willapa Bay, Washington. These animals comprise a range of burrow architectures ranging from simple, unlined burrows to more complex, mucous lined burrows. Oxygen penetrated unburrowed sediment between depths of 0.4–2.6 mm, whereas oxygen penetrated the burrow walls from 0.3 mm to 2.3 mm. Three groups of burrows are recognized based on the oxygen diffusive properties relative to the unburrowed sediment including those that: (1) slightly impeded oxygen penetration, (2) clearly inhibited oxygen penetration, and (3) enhanced oxygen penetration. Differences in the diffusive properties of the burrow wall are related to the burrow microstructure and presumably the microbial communities living within the burrow microenvironment. The results of this study suggest that burrow shape and burrow‐wall architecture may play an important role in controlling the diffusion of oxygen, and possibly of other dissolved gases (i.e. CO2, H2S). The results further demonstrate that simplified assumptions (i.e. that bioturbation uniformly enhances oxygen diffusion into suboxic and anoxic sediments), while requisite for numerical modelling, are not necessarily representative of field data.  相似文献

In this paper, we describe the upper Cisuralian Safetdara and Gundara formations of the Darvaz mountains, North Pamir, which were part of the Kunlun Arc, developed along the active Eurasian margin. The Safetdara Formation comprises massive limestones (mainly cyanobacterial, Tubiphytes and Archaeolithoporella boundstones) alternating with well-bedded bioclastic and oncoidal limestones and an interval of recessive shales. The formation crops out above the Chelamchi Formation consisting of turbiditic siltstones and sandstones with bioclastic silty limestones yielding massive limestone olistoliths. The Gundara Formation consists of fine sandstones at the base, followed by well-bedded marly bioclastic, oncoidal and microbial limestones, bearing a rich silicified brachiopod fauna in life-position. Two new taxa have been identified in this association: the cemented coralliform Gundaria insolita n. gen. n. sp. and the pedicle attached Hemileurus politus n. sp. The inferred environmental setting is that of shoal deposits of warm, shallow, high energy, clear marine waters for the Safetdara Formation. The agglutinated microbial reefs to cluster reefs of the Gundara Formation were probably growing in a muddier, quieter and probably slightly deeper setting.The foraminifers of the Brevaxina Zone suggest a Bolorian age for the top of the Chelamchi Formation, the Safetdara Formation and the base of the Gundara Formation. Kungurian conodonts have been found in the lower part of the Safetdara Formation. The biostratigraphic data from the sedimentary succession of North Pamir, integrated with those already obtained from Southeast Pamir, allow to refine the correlations between the Tethyan regional scale and the International Time Scale. In particular, it seems now clear that the Bolorian and the lower part of the Kubergandian correlate to the Kungurian.  相似文献

Capsule: Carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in the burrows of Sand Martins Riparia riparia increase with depth but have no detectable impact on fledging success.

Aims: To investigate whether burrow depth and CO2 concentrations influence reproductive success in Sand Martins.

Methods: We monitored two Sand Martin colonies along the River Lune, Lancashire, UK, to investigate the effect of burrow depth on reproductive success. We also measured CO2 levels in a sample of burrows to test whether burrow depth predicts CO2 concentration, and to test for a relationship between CO2 concentration and breeding success.

Results: Burrow depth was significantly correlated with fledging success, but the correlation was positive in first broods and negative in second broods. The highest CO2 concentration recorded was 73?650?ppm and the mean concentration across burrows was 31?757?ppm. However, while CO2 concentrations were positively correlated with burrow depth after controlling for the number and age of nestlings, they were not correlated with reproductive success.

Conclusion: There are reproductive costs associated with deeper burrows in second broods, but these could not be attributed to CO2 concentrations despite the exceptionally high levels recorded. This study highlights the need for further investigation into gas exchange and the potential impacts of, or adaptations to, CO2 accumulation in avian burrows.  相似文献
