The concentrations of the 16 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in urban street dust with a view to understanding the potential risk to urban residents exposed to street dust, sources, and distribution of the PAHs. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry was used to measure the concentrations of the PAHs after ultra-sonication with hexane/dichloromethane and clean up. The total concentrations of the ?16 PAHs in the urban street dust from Warri and its environs ranged from 165.1 to 1012 µg kg?1. The isomeric ratios and the PCA indicated that combustion of petroleum and biomass are the major sources of PAHs in Warri and its environs. The total BaP carcinogenic and mutagenic potency concentrations (?BaPTEQ and ?BaPMEQ) were in the range of 0.03 to 219 µg kg?1 and 0.52 to 182 µg kg?1, respectively. The incremental life cancer risk from exposure of the residents of Warri and its environs ranged from 4.07 × 10?7 to 3.11 × 10?3 and 2.13 × 10?7 to 1.49 × 10?3 for the children and adults, respectively, which were higher than the baseline value of acceptable risk of 10?6 (i.e., one case per million people).  相似文献

The Middle East Dust storms have greatly affected the south and west parts of Iran during the last decade. The main purpose of this study was to examine and compare culturable airborne bacteria concentration in particulate matter (PM) during normal, semi-dust, and dust event days in different places and seasons in Ahvaz from November 2011 to May 2012. Sampling was performed every 6 days and on dust event days at different sampling stations. The overall mean concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 for the entire study period were 598.92, 114.8, and 34.5 μg/m3, respectively. The PM concentrations during the dust event days were much higher than normal and semi-dust event days. The highest mean PM concentrations were observed in March 2011. The low PM2.5/PM10 ratios indicate that these PM are mostly originating from natural sources such as dust storms. The overall mean concentration of total bacteria during the study period was 620.6 CFU/m3. The greatest bacterial concentrations were observed during dust event days and at areas with high traffic and more human activities compared with normal days and greener areas. The percentage of gram-positive bacteria was significantly higher than that during the study period (89 vs 11 %). During this study, 26 genera of culturable bacteria were identified from all the sampling stations. The most dominant genera in all sampling stations were Streptomyces, Bacillus, Kocuria, Corynebacterium, and Paenibacillus. The results also showed that there were positive correlations between PM and bacterial concentrations during the study period (p < 0.05).  相似文献

Abstract

Quantification of PM2.5 (particulate matter <2.5?µm) bound heavy metals and their potential health risks were carried out around a cement manufacturing company in Ewekoro, Nigeria. The PM2.5 samples were collected using Environtech gravimetric sampler. A four-staged sequential extraction procedure was used to fractionate PM2.5 bound chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), aluminum (Al), copper (Cu), and silver (Ag), and further analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Chemical speciation results reveal bioavailable levels of Pb (4.05?µg/m3), Cr (10.75?µg/m3), Al (16.47?µg/m3), Cu (4.38E-01?µg/m3), and Ag (1.22E-02?µg/m3) in the airborne particulates. Pb and Cr levels exceeded the World Health Organization allowable limit of 0.5 and 2.5E-05?µg/m3, respectively. The labile phases showed strong indication of the presence of Cr and Cu metal. Excess cancer risks exposure for adults, outdoor workers and children were higher than the acceptable risk target level of 1E-06. Non-carcinogenic health risk estimated using hazard quotients (HQs) and hazard indices (HIs) showed ingestion route within the safe level of HI <1 implying no adverse effect while inhalation route exceeded the safe level for all receptors. Enforcement of pollution control by authorized agencies, and screening of greenbelts as sinks for air pollutants is strongly recommended.  相似文献

Farm workers are often exposed to high concentrations of airborne organic dust and fungal conidia, especially when working with plant materials. The purpose of this investigation was to study the possibility of exposure to the mycotoxin ochratoxin A (OTA) through inhalation of organic dust and conidia. Dust and aerosol samples were collected from three local cowsheds. Aerosol samples for determination of total conidia and dust concentrations were collected by stationary sampling on polycarbonate filters. Total dust was analysed by gravimetry, and conidia were counted using scanning electron microscopy. A method was developed for extraction and determination of OTA in small samples of settled dust. OTA was extracted with a mixture of methanol, chloroform, HCI, and water, purified on immunoaffinity column, and analysed by ion-pair HPLC with fluorescence detection. Recovery of OTA from spiked dust samples (0.9–1.0 μg/kg) was 74% (quantitation limit 0.150 μg/kg). OTA was found in 6 out of 14 settled dust samples (0.2–70 μg/kg). The total concentration of airborne conidia ranged from < 1.1 × 104 to 3.9 × 155 per m3, and the airborne dust concentration ranged from 0.08 to 0.21 mg/m3. Conidia collected from cultures of Penicillium verrucosum and Aspergillus ochraceus contained 0.4–0.7 and 0.02–0.06 pg OTA per conidium, respectively. Testing of conidial extracts from these fungi in a Bacillus subtilis bioassay indicated the presence of toxic compounds in addition to OTA. The results show that airborne dust and fungal conidia can be sources of OTA. Peak exposures to airborne OTA may be significant, e.g., in agricultural environments. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A series of novel sulphonamide derivatives was obtained from sulphanilamide which was N4-alkylated with ethyl bromoacetate followed by reaction with hydrazine hydrate. The hydrazide obtained was further reacted with various aromatic aldehydes. The novel sulphonamides were characterised by infrared, mass spectrometry, 1H- and 13C-NMR and purity was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Human (h) carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) isoforms hCA I and II and Mycobacterium tuberculosis β-CA encoded by the gene Rv3273 (mtCA 3) inhibition activity was investigated with the synthesised compounds which showed promising inhibition. The KIs were in the range of 54.6?nM–1.8?µM against hCA I, in the range of 32.1?nM–5.5?µM against hCA II and of 127?nM–2.12?µM against mtCA 3.  相似文献

Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP), including particulate matter (PM) in respirable coarse and fine size fractions (PM10 and PM2.5), is known to have exposure effects on human health and environment. Real-time PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations were collected from the study locations in Bangkok, Thailand, using TSI AM510 particle counters. Temperature and % relative humidity (%RH) were also collected. Data were compared to data from the closest station of the Pollution Control Department (PCD), Thailand. Real-time mean concentration varied from 86 to 1107 µg/m3 (PM10) and varied from 25 to 664 µg/m3 (PM2.5). In addition, real-time mean PM10 (223.1 µg/m3) was nearly four times greater than that measured by the PCD station, 60 µg/m3. Temperature and %RH from real-time air monitoring and PCD station were comparable. In each study location (five locations, two in morning and afternoon/evening), there were significant positive correlations between PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations and significant negative correlations between temperature and RH%. Results suggested that outdoor TRAP via measured real-time PM concentrations were more realistic exposure concentration estimates among street vendors as related to respiratory and other symptoms than data obtained from PCD station. Nevertheless, PM10 as measured by the PCD station might be a reasonable surrogate for estimated outdoor PM2.5 exposure.  相似文献

Due to increasing energy demand and limited fossil fuels, renewable energy sources have gained in importance. Particulate matter (PM) in general, but also PM from the combustion of wood is known to exert adverse health effects in human. These are often related to specific toxic compounds adsorbed to the PM surface, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), of which some are known human carcinogens. This study focused on the bioavailability of PAHs and on the tumor initiation potential of wood combustion PM, using the PAH CALUX® reporter gene assay and the BALB/c 3T3 cell transformation assay, respectively. For this, both cell assays were exposed to PM and their respective organic extracts from varying degrees of combustion. The PAH CALUX® experiments demonstrated a concentration–response relationship matching the PAHs detected in the samples. Contrary to expectations, PM samples from complete (CC) and incomplete combustion (IC) provided for a stronger and weaker response, respectively, suggesting that PAH were more readily bioavailable in PM from CC. These findings were corroborated via PAH spiking experiments indicating that IC PM contains organic components that strongly adsorb PAH thereby reducing their bioavailability. The results obtained with organic extracts in the cell transformation assay presented the highest potential for carcinogenicity in samples with high PAH contents, albeit PM from CC also demonstrated a carcinogenic potential. In conclusion, the in vitro assays employed emphasize that CC produces PM with low PAH content however with a general higher bioavailability and thus with a nearly similar carcinogenic potential than IC PM.  相似文献

The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic and petroleum hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, organochlorine and organophosphoric pesticides, tributyltin and metals were determined in sediments of the approach fairways to the main ports in the Polish part of the Vistula Lagoon and of the Elbl?g River. Analyzed sediments contained low concentrations of all contaminants, except petroleum hydrocarbons. The average petroleum hydrocarbons’ (PHCs) concentration was 630 mg kg?1, indicating significant pollution with petroleum hydrocarbons. The highest concentrations of analyzed contaminants were identified in the vicinity of Elbl?g, part of the Vistula Lagoon under the most anthropogenic pressure.  相似文献

Large quantities of African dust are carried into the southeastern United States each summer with concentrations typically in the range of 10 to 100?µg m?3. Because approximately one-third to one-half of the dust mass is in the size range under 2.5?µm diameter, the advection of African dust has implications for the EPA's newly implemented standard for PM2.5 particulate matter and for the assessment of human health effects. It will be difficult to assess the impact of African dust events on air quality because they occur during the summer (maximum in July) when photochemical pollution events are frequent and intense in the eastern United States. Indeed, the presence of dust could affect the evolution of photochemical dust events. In order to assess the role of African dust in air quality in the United States, it will be necessary to develop a set of diagnostic indicators; it appears that dust mineralogy and elemental composition might be useful for this purpose. Various satellite products can be used to characterize the spatial coverage of dust events and, when coupled with meteorological tools, to predict impact regions.  相似文献

The essential oil (EO) of Bassia muricata shoots was extracted via hydro-distillation and then investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Thirty-four compounds were recognized for the first time from this plant, representing 100% of the total mass. Terpenoids represented the major components with 69.17% of the total mass, containing oxygenated sesquiterpenes (53.18%), oxygenated monoterpenes (9.77%), sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (5.03%), and diterpenes (1.19%). Additionaly, 6-methoxy-1-acetonaphthone was the only aromatic compound represented in a high percentage of the total identified compounds with 22.35%. Additionally, a percent of 8.48% of the total mass was hydrocarbons. Only one oxygenated sesquiterpene namely hexahydrofarnesyl acetone representing 47.35% of the total mass was identified. It was followed by methoxy-1-acetonaphthone (19.92%), n-dotriacontane (3.58%), endo-borneol (3.24%), 6-methy-α-ionone (3.04%), and α-gurjunene (2.65%). The EO exhibited moderate antioxidant activity comparable with ascorbic acid as a standard, where it attained IC50 value of 20.70 µL L−1 and 16.32 µL L−1, for DPPH and ABTS. The EO of B. muricata significantly reduces the germination and seedling development of the weed Chenopodium murale. The EO showed an IC50 value of 175.60 µL L−1, 246.65 µL L−1, and 308.33 µL L−1 for root growth, shoot growth, and germination, respectively. Therefore, this EO could be a good green resource for the control of weeds.  相似文献

Alpine lakes receive a large fraction of their nutrients from atmospheric sources and are consequently sensitive to variations in both the amount and chemistry of atmospheric deposition. In this study we explored the spatial changes in lake water chemistry and biology along a gradient of dust deposition in the Wind River Range, Wyoming. Regional differences were explored using the variation in bulk deposition, lake water, sediment, and bedrock geochemistry and catchment characteristics. Dust deposition rates in the Southwestern region averaged 3.34 g m?2 year?1, approximately three times higher than deposition rates in the Northwestern region (average 1.06 g m?2 year?1). Dust-P deposition rates ranged from 87 µg P m2 day?1 in the Northwestern region to 276 µg P m2 day?1 in the Southwestern region. Subalpine and alpine lakes in the Southwestern region had greater total phosphorus (TP) concentrations (5–13 µg L?1) and greater sediment phosphorus (SP) concentrations (2–5 mg g?1) than similar lakes elsewhere in the region (1–8 µg L?1 TP, 0.5–2 mg g?1 SP). Lake phosphorus concentrations were related to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) across vegetation gradients, but related to the percent of bare rock, catchment area to lake area, and catchment steepness across dust deposition gradients. Modern phytoplankton and zooplankton biomasses were two orders of magnitude greater in the Southwest than in the Northwest, and alpine lakes in the Southwest had a unique diatom species assemblage with relatively higher concentrations of Asterionella formosa, Pseudostaurosira pseudoconstruens, and Pseudostaurosira brevistriata. These results suggests that catchment controls on P export to lakes (i.e. DOC) are overridden in dominantly bare rock basins where poor soils cannot effectively retain dust deposited P.  相似文献

To investigate the contamination level, distribution, possible source, and human exposure risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the urban traffic environment, 15 PAHs were measured in 34 road dust samples (particle size < 25 μm) collected from three grades of roads and park paths in Xinxiang, China. ΣPAHs concentrations ranged from 311 to 21200 ng g?1, with a mean of 5890 ng g?1 and decreased in the following order: main roads (7650 ng g?1) > collector streets (7410 ng g?1) > bypasses (2970 ng g?1) > park paths (1570 ng g?1), indicating that significant positive correlation existed between PAH contamination and traffic density. PAHs in all samples were dominantly composed of 4-ring PAHs, accounting for 44.8% of the total. Pyrene, fluoranthene, and chrysene were the predominant individual components and accounted for 14.7% (1.2–19.2%), 12.9% (3.3–20.3%), and 11.0% (2.5–18.6%) of ΣPAHs, respectively. The specific isomer ratios indicated that traffic emission was the dominant source of PAHs in road dust. The incremental lifetime cancer risk values showed that cancer risk from exposure to road dust–borne PAHs was acceptable for local residents in Xinxiang.  相似文献

Environmental health is an essential component of quality of life in modern societies. Foliar dust contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that may have harmful effects on human health. The PAHs concentration of foliar dust is useful to assess environmental air pollution. Our results indicate that: (1) the highest levels of PAHs were distributed in urban areas, with a mean of 3430.23 ng·g?1, lower mean concentrations were found in suburban (2282.12 ng·g?1), and rural areas (1671.06 ng·g?1). (2) Diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis were used to identify the sources of PAHs: Gasoline vehicle traffic emissions were the predominant source in urban areas, along with coal and coke combustion. In suburban areas, the main sources were petroleum combustion (especially liquid fossil fuels) and coal combustion. Coal and wood combustion were the primary source of PAHs in foliar dust in rural areas. (3) The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR), estimated based on the results of this study indicate that urban residents were potentially exposed to high cancer risk via both dust ingestion and dermal contact. We conclude that urbanization has significant effects on the PAH concentrations of foliar dust, illustrating the importance of trees in improving air quality in urban areas.  相似文献

Exposure to specific airborne bacteria indoors is linked to infectious and noninfectious adverse health outcomes. However, the sources and origins of bacteria suspended in indoor air are not well understood. This study presents evidence for elevated concentrations of indoor airborne bacteria due to human occupancy, and investigates the sources of these bacteria. Samples were collected in a university classroom while occupied and when vacant. The total particle mass concentration, bacterial genome concentration, and bacterial phylogenetic populations were characterized in indoor, outdoor, and ventilation duct supply air, as well as in the dust of ventilation system filters and in floor dust. Occupancy increased the total aerosol mass and bacterial genome concentration in indoor air PM(10) and PM(2.5) size fractions, with an increase of nearly two orders of magnitude in airborne bacterial genome concentration in PM(10). On a per mass basis, floor dust was enriched in bacterial genomes compared to airborne particles. Quantitative comparisons between bacterial populations in indoor air and potential sources suggest that resuspended floor dust is an important contributor to bacterial aerosol populations during occupancy. Experiments that controlled for resuspension from the floor implies that direct human shedding may also significantly impact the concentration of indoor airborne particles. The high content of bacteria specific to the skin, nostrils, and hair of humans found in indoor air and in floor dust indicates that floors are an important reservoir of human-associated bacteria, and that the direct particle shedding of desquamated skin cells and their subsequent resuspension strongly influenced the airborne bacteria population structure in this human-occupied environment. Inhalation exposure to microbes shed by other current or previous human occupants may occur in communal indoor environments.  相似文献

In recent years, monitoring of airborne bacteria and fungi concentrations has obtained increasing universal attraction not only for influences on ecological balance but also for evaluating their public health consequences. In this study, we aimed to investigate culturable airborne bacteria and fungi levels in different sites of Abadan, and their association with meteorological parameters and PM2.5 levels. Abadan is one of the most industrialized cities in the southwest of Iran where over the current decade has experienced lots of dust storm episodes. In total, 400 air samples were collected in 6 months (autumn and winter) using a single-stage viable Andersen cascade impactor for sampling airborne bacteria and fungi and portable DustTrak Aerosol Monitor 8520 for measuring PM2.5 concentrations and meteorological parameters. Microbial concentrations showed a significant difference between various sites over the study period with averages of 569.57?±?312.64 and 482.73?±?242.86 CFU/M3 for bacteria and fungi, respectively. The air temperature had a significant effect on the concentration of both airborne bacteria and fungi. A significant positive correlation between relative humidity and fungi but no correlation between relative humidity and bacteria concentrations were observed. The average airborne PM2.5 concentrations of all sites among the study period was 93.24?±?116.72 μg/m3. The atmospheric bacterial and fungal communities were strongly positively correlated with the ambient PM2.5 level. The levels of airborne bacteria and fungi along with PM2.5 in the air of the city were relatively higher than the recommended levels. Therefore, the best course of action is needed to control emission sources. Further studies are also needed to evaluate the clinical analysis of the health effects of exposure to these pollutants.

Numbers of airborne microorganisms, fungi, Gram-negative bacteria, thermophilic microorganisms, endotoxins and dust have been monitored in resource recovery plants and composting plants. The work is still in progress, so this paper decribes only preliminary results. Only low levels (< 15 ng m?3) of endotoxins were found at all locations. Levels of microorganisms, fungi, Gram-negative bacteria and dust changed with quality of waste, activity in the plant etc. Levels of airborne microorganisms, endotoxins and dust could be considerably decreased in resource recovery plants if only waste of good quality, e.g. presorted materials, is handled. For composting plants the highest levels of airborne microorganisms were found during aeration, especially by indoor composting where levels of 8.3 × 105 CFU of mesophilic microorganisms were found.  相似文献

Inhalation of airborne fungal spores or fungalenzymes may cause adverse pulmonary healtheffects. The enzyme NAGase(N-acetyl--D-glucosaminidase) is achitinase presumed to be secreted by all fungi. In this study, NAGase activities andconcentrations of fungi are estimated inairborne biomass dust to acquire knowledgeabout the level of NAGase activity and therelationship between NAGase activity andconcentrations of airborne fungal spores.NAGase was sampled on both teflon andpolycarbonate filters, and polycarbonatefilters proved to be better for extraction ofNAGase than teflon filters. NAGase was foundin airborne dust at a biofuel plant and in dustgenerated from biomass. At a biofuel plant, themedian level of exposure to NAGase was 21 pmols–1 m–3. Significant correlationswere found between NAGase activities, totalnumber of fungal spores and CFU of fungi, withthe highest degree of correlation being betweenthe total number of fungal spores and theNAGase activity (r = 0.802, n = 76). Furthermore, when dust was stored for different periods, theculturability of fungal spores was stronglyreduced and the NAGase activity was not or onlyslightly reduced after up to 40 days ofstorage. Accordingly, NAGase activity may beused as a rapid method to get an estimate ofthe exposure level to airborne fungal spores.Whether pure NAGase or the NAGaseconcentrations observed here cause any healtheffects is not known, although it has beenshown that other fungal enzymes can causerespiratory disorders and a chitinase isdescribed as an allergen.  相似文献

The aim of the work was to find the optimal photon irradiance for the growth of green cells of Haematococcus pluvialis and to study the interrelations between changes in photochemical parameters and pigment composition in cells exposed to photon irradiances between 50 and 600?µmol?m?2?s?1 and a light:dark cycle of 12:12?h. Productivity of cultures increased with irradiance. However, the rate of increase was higher in the range 50–200?µmol??2?s?1. The carotenoid content increased with increasing irradiance, while the chlorophyll content decreased. The maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm) gradually declined from 0.76 at the lowest irradiance of 50?µmol??2?s?1 to 0.66 at 600?µmol??2?s?1. Photosynthetic activity showed a drop at the end of the light period, but recovered fully during the following dark phase. A steep increase in non-photochemical quenching was observed when cultures were grown at irradiances above 200?µmol??2?s?1. A sharp increase in the content of secondary carotenoids also occurred above 200?µmol?m?2?s?1. According to our results, with H. pluvialis green cells grown in a 5-cm light path device, 200?µmol??2?s?1 was optimal for growth, and represented a threshold above which important changes in both photochemical parameters and pigment composition occurred.  相似文献

The present study reports mutagenic and genotoxic activities associated with ambient air collected at 15 sites characteristic for urban, industrial or rural conditions in Flanders. Airborne particulates (PM10) and semi-volatile compounds were collected on quartz filters (QF) and polyurethane foam (PUF) cartridges using a high-volume sampling device. The mutagenic and genotoxic potency of the organic extracts – Soxhlet extraction with acetone – was determined by use of the Salmonella mutagenicity standard plate-incorporation assay and the Vitotox® assay, respectively. Concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the extracts were determined by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).Ambient air samples contained significant PAH levels and mutagenic activities at all 15 sites: direct mutagenicity of up to 47 revertants per cubic meter was found in the QF extracts and more limited activity of up to 11 rev m−3 in the PUF extracts. Metabolic activation of PUF extracts resulted in an important increase in mutagenic activity, up to 30 rev m−3, but no such increase was observed for QF extracts. The highest values were observed outside large cities at industrial sites and at a rural site contaminated by pollution from a chemical plant at a distance of 4 km. Also at the background location near the North Sea a significant mutagenic activity was measured in the QF extracts (+S9: 9 rev m−3; −S9: 7 rev m−3). Apparently, there is in Flanders a significant background exposure level to airborne mutagenicity, even in areas with limited or no nearby pollution sources. Based on the concentrations of 10 mutagenic PAHs and supposing additivity of their specific mutagenicities, only a few percent (mean 3%) of the observed indirect mutagenic activity could be explained. This implies that most mutagenic activity originated from other substances that were not identified or measured in our chemical analysis. This underscores the importance of bio-monitoring measurements.  相似文献
