Diaspores of many higher plants, adapted to dispersal by attachment to animal fur and feathers, have evolved special structures providing mechanical interlocking or adhesion by glue. In this study, the contact separation force of a single structure, a burr, was used to characterise the attaching ability of the interlocking fruits in four plant species, Agrimonia eupatoria, Circaea lutetiana, Galium aparine, and Geum urbanum. The force that separated a single burr from interlock, the contact separation force of the burr, was measured. The morphological variables of burrs were estimated, and the dependence of the force on the size and the morphology of burrs was examined. The contact separation force of the burr significantly differed among species studied. It ranged from 3.36 to 143.85 mN. The increase of the force is positively correlated with burr length and burr diameter in the basal part. However, in C. lutetiana, the burrs experienced the lowest force, although the values of morphological burr variables were intermediate, and the force applied did not cause the burr damage. In the three species studied, the fruits of which bear many burrs, the force was considerably lower than the fruit weight. To hold the fruit attached to the animal, the interlocking of several burrs (5–21 depending on the species) is required. Total force of all burrs covering the fruit exceeded the fruit weight by 4–20 times. This may increase the attachment force of the fruit, when more than the minimal burr number required are interlocked.  相似文献

  1. Waterbird‐mediated endozoochory is an essential mechanism for the dispersal of sessile organisms in freshwater ecosystems. However, in the neotropics there are no previous studies of how different waterbird species vary in the dispersal functions they perform, and how seasonality influences endozoochory. In this study, we identified plant diaspores dispersed in faeces of five South American waterfowl (Brazilian teal Amazonetta brasiliensis, yellow‐billed teal Anas flavirostris, ringed teal Callonetta leucophrys, coscoroba swan Coscoroba coscoroba, and white‐faced whistling‐duck Dendrocygna viduata).
  2. We collected 165 faecal samples from five wetlands in southern Brazil surrounded by pasture and rice fields, then separated and measured intact seeds and other diaspores. Using generalised linear models, we tested how diaspore abundance and taxonomic richness differed among bird species and between cold (April–September) and warm (October–March) periods. We also analysed bird‐specific and seasonal variations in diaspore composition through principal coordinates analysis and permutational multivariate analysis of variance. We used indicator species analysis to determine which diaspore species discriminated between bird species and seasons. Finally, we measured diaspore length in order to analyse differences among waterfowl species in the size of diaspores dispersed.

We found 2,066 intact diaspores from 40 different plant taxa, including seeds of 37 angiosperms and diaspores of Lycophyta (Isoetes cf. maxima), Pteridophyta (Azolla filiculoides), and Charophyceae. There was at least one diaspore in 65% of all faecal samples. Diaspores of native amphibious and emergent plants were dominant. We found 1,835 diaspores (from 33 taxa) in the cold period but only 231 (23 taxa) in the warm period. Seeds of the grass Zizaniopsis bonariensis and of the sedge Rynchospora sp. were the most abundant taxa. A strong interaction between bird species and season was the most important predictor of variation in both taxonomic richness and abundance of diaspores. The taxonomic composition of diaspores differed among waterfowl species and season. Indicator species analysis identified 12 plant taxa associated with particular bird species and seasons. Coscoroba swan, the largest bodied species in our study dispersed a higher proportion (8.2%) of large (length >2 mm) seeds.

Despite considerable overlap, there are important differences in the plants dispersed by each species, and the smallest (ringed teal) and largest (coscoroba swan) birds are particularly different. All five waterfowl species are distributed over wide areas of South America and here we demonstrated that they are likely to be important plant vectors connecting wetland species at different geographical scales. Many of these plants have previously been assumed to lack mechanisms for long‐distance dispersal.

Abstract

Background: Elaiosomes serve as a reward for seed-dispersing ants. The size of the elaiosome and the elaiosome–seed mass (ESM) ratio are expected to affect seed dispersal, whilst seed size affects the establishment of seedlings. Elaiosomes and seeds can undergo independent change, thus variation in these traits may arise through heterogeneous selection for seedling establishment and for dispersal. Only a few studies have examined intraspecific variation in these traits.

Aims: The aim of this study was to determine if the ratio of elaiosome–seed mass was different in two co-occurring congeneric plant species (Corydalis intermedia and C. solida). Under the hypothesis that the ESM ratio affected diaspore attractiveness to ants, the allometric relationship between elaiosome and seed mass was used to infer how selection by ants may shape the diaspore.

Methods: Seed and elaiosome mass were measured in fruits collected from central and marginal populations of the two plant species. The allometric relationship between seed and elaiosome mass was obtained using major axis regression. In situ cafeteria experiments estimated the removal rate of diaspores by ants.

Results: Intra- and interspecific variation in diaspore traits were found. The selfing C. intermedia produced heavier seeds and elaiosomes than the outcrossing C. solida. Ants removed more diaspores from C. intermedia where both species were present. A slope larger than one characterised the allometric relationship between elaiosome and seed mass in both species. This slope was twice as steep in the central populations of C. intermedia compared to marginal ones.

Conclusions: Results indicate that in C. intermedia elaiosome mass must increase more than proportionally with increasing seed mass for the diaspore to remain attractive to ants. The direction of interspecific differences suggests that a plant-mating system may affect selection for dispersal.  相似文献

Background: The South Aegean Volcanic Arc (SAVA), one of the most notable geological structures of the Mediterranean Sea, is floristically well known. Nevertheless, the factors that contribute to shaping the plant species richness of the SAVA remain unclear.

Aims: To investigate the factors that affect plant species richness and identify plant diversity hotspots in the SAVA and other central Aegean islands.

Methods: We used stepwise multiple regression to test the relationship between a number of environmental factors and plant species richness in the SAVA, as well as the residuals from the species–area linear regressions of native, Greek and Cycladian endemic taxa as indicators of relative species richness.

Results: The area was confirmed to be the most powerful single explanatory variable of island species richness, while geodiversity, maximum elevation and mean annual precipitation explained a large proportion of variance for almost all the species richness measures. Anafi, Amorgos and Folegandros were found to be endemic plant diversity hotspots.

Conclusions: We have demonstrated that geodiversity is an important factor in shaping plant species diversity in the Cyclades, while mean annual precipitation, human population density and maximum elevation were significant predictors of the Greek endemics present in the Cyclades. Finally, Anafi was found to be a plant diversity hotspot in the South Aegean Sea.  相似文献

North American species of the grass Danthonia bear distinct chasmogamous and cleistogamous flowers. Four taxa occurring in North Carolina (D. compressa, D. epilis, D. sericea, and D. spicata) were examined for variation in the degree of cleistogamy. The flowering culms bear a single terminal panicle consisting of 4 to 12 spikelets of chasmogamous flowers. In each leaf axil, at the nodes of the flowering culm, is a single spikelet of cleistogamous flowers completely surrounded by the leaf sheath. The percentage of cleistogamous flowers produced on any culm depends on the number of chasmogamous and cleistogamous spikelets and the number of flowers in each type of spikelet. All four characters vary among the taxa examined. Danthonia compressa produces, on the average, 50% cleistogamous flowers; D. spicata, 25% cleistogamous flowers; D. sericea and D. epilis, 5% cleistogamous flowers. The degree of cleistogamy in D. spicata is associated with certain habitat features. Populations from mountain sites, disturbed sites, and non-woodland sites produced higher percentages of cleistogamous flowers than did populations from piedmont, undisturbed, and woodland sites, respectively. Grazing may favor increased cleistogamy because cleistogamous flowers are produced lower on the plant. In North Carolina, the most frequently grazed Danthonia taxa also produce the highest percentage of cleistogamous flowers.  相似文献

Plant dispersal is a very important ecological phenomenon, as it can enable species to move away from the parent plant. This contributes to shaping communities, determining patterns of distribution, landscape configuration, plant invasions and evolutionary processes. Measuring dispersal distance directly is difficult and thus, diaspore morphology can be used to make estimates. Previous research on the topic often resorts to analysing the diaspore’s morphology as if it was a bi-dimensional structure; when in many cases, diaspores have three-dimensional qualities. In this study, we show how estimates of wind dispersal potential of Ailanthus altissima can be considerably improved using morphological variables that succeed in describing the three-dimensional nature of samaras. We suggest that this reasoning could be extensively applied to research involving not only other species, but also multi-specific scenarios with a wide range of diaspore morphologies.  相似文献

The transport of diaspores on animal hairs depends on the ability of a diaspore to attach to the hair and to be retained in it over longer periods of time. Whereas several studies of diaspore retention on animal hairs have been conducted recently, the process of diaspore attachment to the hair has not yet been studied systematically. We describe a new method to quantify the attachment potential (AtP) of plant diaspores. Attachment potential was measured as the proportion of diaspores of a given species that attached to pieces of an animal coat in a standardised experiment. The experiment was conducted for 58 plant species (herbs and grasses) and three different coat types: sheep wool, cattle and roe deer hair. Attachment potentials differed widely between the three coat types, but also between plant species. We found diaspore surface structure (a quantitative measure of diaspore morphology) and diaspore exposition (describing the morphology of the infructescence) to be the most important plant traits regulating AtP. An influence of seed mass on attachment potential could not be detected. For sheep wool, a general linear model (with diaspore exposure as a factor and diaspore surface structure as covariate) explained 77% of the variation in AtPs. To validate this model, we predicted AtPs for 27 additional species and compared these to the measured Atps; the predicted and measured AtPscorrelated significantly with r s = 0.68. A comparison of attachment and retention potentials to sheep wool for 127 randomly selected plant species showed that attachment and retention are only very weakly correlated, indicating that both processes act rather independently of each other. Since many diaspores seem to perform well in only one of these processes, attachment can be considered to be as equally as decisive as retention in terms of epizoochorous dispersal. Capsule: Common Swift Apus apus and Pallid Swift Apus Pallidus are morphologically very similar but are genetically distinct and diverged 1.9–2.1 million years ago (mya).

Aims: To examine genetic differentiation and to estimate separation time between Common and Pallid Swifts.

Methods: Estimation of differences in three different mitochondrial DNA markers (COI, ND2 and control region), and a fourth marker, the cytb, that did not differ between taxa. Fossils were used to calibrate the estimate of separation date between the two taxa.

Results: The genetic between-species distances were 0.010, 0.006 and 0.033 for the three markers, respectively. These values were from three to ten times higher than within-species distances. Results show that the separation dates back to 1.9–2.1?mya, at the Plio-Pleistocene transition, when global climate underwent a period of significant cooling and Northern latitudes were probably more favourable to the Common than to the Pallid Swift.

Conclusion: Differences in breeding biology, migration, moult and vocalizations between the two species are mirrored by a clear genetic separation.  相似文献

摘要 目的:探讨表皮生长因子受体2(human epidermal growth factor receptor2, HER2)基因突变对非小细胞肺癌临床特征及其与CT征象的相关性。方法:回顾性选择我院2010年1月至2019年12月收治的351例非小细胞肺癌患者,收集351例非小细胞肺癌患者的HER2突变位点、CT影像学征象、一般资料等资料。分析351例患者中的HER2基因突变发生情况;单因素、多因素分析HER2突变情况与非小细胞肺癌患者的临床病理特征、CT表现特征相关性。结果:351例患者中,基因突变者20例,占比为5.70 %(20/351)。单因素结果表明,非小细胞肺癌患者中,HER2基因突变与有家族史有关(P<0.05)。病灶边界分叶/毛刺、有坏死征、胸膜凹陷征与HER2基因突变存在相关性(P<0.05)。多因素结果表明,有家族史、病灶边界分叶/毛刺、有坏死征、胸膜凹陷征是HER2基因突变的危险因素(P<0.05)。结论:有家族史、病灶边界分叶/毛刺、有坏死征、胸膜凹陷征与HER2基因突变有关,对指导临床治疗有重要意义。  相似文献

Abstract. The composition of the bryophyte diaspore bank in an old-growth Picea abies forest was studied before and after experimental disturbance of forest-floor patches. 40 species, both hepatics and mosses, emerged from spores, and probably also from gemmae and moss fragments, in greenhouse cultivations of soil samples. The three most abundant taxa were Pohlia nutans, Sphagnum spp. and Polytrichum commune/longisetum. Initially, the number of species from the diaspore bank in mineral soil, 9.9 species/sample, was higher than that in humus, 6.6. Four years after the disturbance took place, the reverse was found. Several species that are typical colonisers of disturbed soil were very common in the diaspore bank. By contrast, some of the most abundant forest floor species appeared to be absent. The diaspore bank of bryophytes appears to play a role similar to that of the seed bank in vascular plants: (1) it allows species to survive unfavourable periods (temporal dispersal); (2) it facilitates rapid colonisation after disturbance; (3) it influences the post-disturbance species composition and diversity. The results emphasise that the understanding of vegetation succession patterns is, to a large extent, dependent on quantitative data on the relative importance of spatial and temporal dispersal.  相似文献

Structurally preserved ultimate vegetative shoots and attached foliage of Sphenophyllum multirame and two additional taxa from Upper and Middle Pennsylvanian coal balls are described. Shoot axes of all taxa are delimited by small cube-shaped epidermal cells and contain three isolated strands of protoxylem tracheids separated by undifferentiated procambial cells. Metaxylem maturation is delayed for some distance below the apical meristem. Branches originate from a single protoxylem strand and are contiguous with the subjacent leaf trace for a short distance. Sphenophyllum multirame is considered a valid taxon. It is suggested that shoot and foliar anatomical characteristics may form valid criteria for species delimitation within the genus, and S. reedae is delimited by such characteristics. An additional form is tentatively suggested as a possible new species. Anatomical similarities between 5. reedae and Peltastrobus reedae suggest that these taxa represent vegetative and reproductive structures of the same plant.  相似文献

AimThe aim of this study was to analyze critical success factors (CSFs) for implementation of an incident learning system (ILS) in a radiation oncology department (ROD) and evaluate the perception of the staff members along this process.BackgroundImplementing an ILS is a way to leverage learning from incidents and is a tool for improving patient safety, consisting of a cycle of reporting and analyzing events as well as taking preventive actions. ILS implementation is challenging, requiring specific resources and cultural changes.Materials and methodsAn ILS was designed and implemented based on the CSF identified in the literature review. Before starting the ILS implementation, a structured survey was applied to assess dimensions of patient safety culture. After the period of implementation (7 months), the survey was applied again and compared with the initial assessment, and interviews were performed with staff members to evaluate the overall satisfaction with ILS and CSFs.ResultsStatistically significant improvements were observed in 5 dimensions (12 totals) of the safety culture survey, considering time points before and after the ILS implementation. According to interviewees, “Facilitating committee”, “Efficient data collection”, “Focus on improvement”, “Just culture” and “Feedback to users” were the most relevant CSFs.ConclusionsThe ILS designed and implemented at ROD was perceived as an important tool to support quality and safety initiatives, promoting the improvement in safety culture. The ILS implementation critical success factors were identified and have shown good agreement between the results of the literature and the users' practical perception.  相似文献

Sedum album is a succulent plant, with phenotypic variability resulting in delimitation of a number of taxa with diverse taxonomic recognition. We analyzed the taxa from Sedum album in broad sense (S. album, S. micranthum, S. athoum and S. serpentini) from Balkan Peninsula, to check whether the variability of their epidermal structures and epicuticular wax composition corresponds to their taxonomic reliability. Epidermal structures and epicuticular waxes were analyzed using light and scanning electron microscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-flame ionization detector chromatography and multivariate statistical techniques. Analyses of studied taxa have shown that significant systematic characters include adaxial epidermal and guard cell length, stomatal frequency and subsidiary cells area on abaxial epidermis. The content of n-alkanes C29, C30, C27, C32 and C33 was shown to be valuable criterion for their phytochemical delimitation. The comparison of epicuticular wax microstructures has shown no significant differences. Results indicate presence of two (micromorphology) or three (phytochemistry) well-defined groups of populations, with S. serpentini manifesting a considerable level of separation toward the others. Sedum athoum have shown weak to moderate degree of differentiation, while S. micranthum has shown general resemblance to S. album.  相似文献

Several studies relate removal of diaspores from different ant-dispersed plant species to the size of their claiosomes. This study is the first one to relate intraspecific variation in claiosome size to removal of diaspores by ants. This approach circumvents the problem posed by interspecific variation in chemistry and morphology of elaiosomes. We used the systemHepatica nobilis Mill. (Ranunculaceae) andMyrmica ruginodis Nyl. The elaiosome was the attractive part of the diaspore and its attractiveness decreased quickly after release from the fruit. In experimental runs where ants collected diaspores, the elaiosome size of accepted diaspores was larger than of those rejected and the largest diaspores were collected first. Since size of diaspore, elaiosome and achene were correlated, the diaspores that were removed first had both the largest elaiosome and achene. However, our experiments suggested that elaiosome size was more important to removal than achene size or the elaiosome:achene size ratio. If ant dispersal improves plant fitness, elaiosome size and hence diaspore size would be expected to increase over time. However, such directional selection mediated by the ants is probably counterbalanced by the plant. Seed predators and a negative trade-off between number and size of seeds would, among other factors, select for smaller diaspore size,i.e. counteract the effect of the ants' preference for larger elaiosomes.  相似文献

【目的】研究传统药用植物烟草(Nicotiana tabacum L.)内生真菌的丰富度,揭示其种群多样性和群落结构,为烟草内生真菌资源的有效利用奠定基础。【方法】采用组织分离法进行烟草内生真菌的分离,通过形态学和分子生物学相结合的方法进行菌株分类鉴定,以香农多样性指数及相对分离频率反映内生真菌物种多样性及分布规律。【结果】从不同组织部位、不同生长时期、不同海拔样地的健康烟草中共分离获得539株内生真菌,根据r DNA-ITS系统发育分析鉴定为31属73种,香农多样性指数为2.78,曲霉属Aspergillus和镰孢属Fusarium为优势菌群,其相对分离频率分别为22.63%和12.99%。其分布规律表现为茎部内生真菌的多样性高于叶部和根部;随着生育期的延长,内生真菌多样性逐步增多;随着海拔高度升高,内生真菌的种类和数量呈现降低的趋势。【结论】烟草内生真菌具有丰富的生物多样性,其分布表现出组织、生长时期、海拔高度专化性。阐明内生真菌在烟草中的分布规律,可以为烟草内生真菌在农业生产领域的开发应用提供科学依据。  相似文献

目的 对北京市医改实施一年后医务人员工作态度及影响因素进行调查分析。方法 从样本医院中随机抽取1/3医务人员进行问卷调查,对基本信息情况、工作态度、医药分开相关情况、医务人员工作状态、绩效考核情况、收入情况等方面进行调查。以工作态度为因变量,以其他可能影响因素指标为自变量分别进行卡方分析和多元Logistic回归分析。结果 医务人员工作积极性较高,工作态度的影响因素包括岗位、医药分开支持度、岗位适合度、才能发挥程度、绩效考核的激励作用5项指标。结论 实施公立医院医药分开改革,得到了绝大大多数医务人员的支持和拥护。  相似文献

This study describes the dispersal traits and dispersal patterns of 51 perennial plant species belonging to 19 families in an oro-Mediterranean thorn cushion plant formation on the High Atlas, Morocco. Diaspore type, mass, number, antitelechoric mechanisms and dispersal time were studied with respect to growth forms, dispersal modes and spatial dispersal. Species spanned 105 range of diaspore mass, which coincided with those found in other high mountain regions. Diaspore mass was significantly higher in trees and shrubs than in semi-shrubs and perennial herbs. Barochorous and zoochorous species are more likely to have heavy diaspores, whereas anemochorous and ballistic species have a medium diaspore mass and semachorous and ombro-hydrochorous species have low diaspore mass. Diaspore number was significantly higher in trees and shrubs than in semi-shrubs and perennial herbs. The barochorous, ombro-hydrochorous and zoochorous species tended to produce higher diaspore numbers than species with other dispersal modes. Bradyspory was well-developed by trees and large shrubs dispersed by biotic vectors. Synaptospermy was represented by its long dispersal component. Myxospermy was significantly associated with semi-shrubs and perennial herbs with restricted spatial dispersal. It seems that ombro-hydrochory combined with myxospermy and a high number of light seeds is an efficient mechanism that ensures successful establishment of the most typical and endemic thorn cushion plant species, such as Alyssum, Vella and Ormenis. In our study area, the highest dispersal availability was synchronized with the dry summer season (July–August) and the beginning of the rainy months (September). The dispersal peak for the wind-dispersed species, which is the most effective primary dispersal mode, occurs during the dry season, while dispersal for the biotic-dispersed species takes place throughout the year.  相似文献
