The aim of this study is to provide information on the fishing pattern of Parapenaeus longirostris in the northern Tyrrhenian Sea (western Mediterranean), in order to improve the management of the resource in the area. Data were obtained from commercial fishery, covering the period 1991–2002. Catch rates revealed notable inter-annual fluctuation of the P. longirostris landing, probably due to the life cycle of the species. The highest yields (kg per hour of trawl) of the commercial fishery were obtained at depths ranging between 180 and 300 m, the lower ones at depths between 100 and 180 m, where small specimens are more abundant. Commercial catches were characterised by a very low presence of specimens smaller than 20 mm carapace length (CL), mainly due to the deeper localisation of the fishing grounds when compared to the recruitment areas of the species. The size at which 50% of the specimens were discarded by the fishermen was 15 mm CL, while the estimated size at first capture of the individuals caught by the commercial net was 12.4 mm CL.  相似文献

Respiratory metabolism of a marine penaeid prawn, Penaeus japonicus (Bate) was studied in relation to body size, starvation, dissolved oxygen tension, salinity and temperature. Oxygen consumption was significantly (P < 0.03) elevated with decline in body size. The rate of oxygen consumption was decreased significantly (P < 0.05) with an increase in the day of starvation, but the values of the loth and 15th day did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) from each other, indicating adaptation to starved conditions. Respiratory rate was on the ascending scale with an elevation in the surrounding oxygen content. Oxygen consumption increased significantly (P < 0.05) in both hyper- and hypotonic media. Rate of oxygen consumption was significantly (P < 0.05) augmented with an increase in the ambient temperature upto 34°C but a drastic fall was found at both low (18°C) and high (36°C) extreme temperatures. Gravid females of Penaeus semisulcatus were spawned in the laboratory by natural means. The embryos were documented and the larvae were reared from hatching to postlarval stage at 28.2–30.0 °C and 33.5–34.5 g kg−1 salinity for about 10 days (223 h 55 min). Six naupliar stages, three protozoea stages, three mysis stages and the first postlarval stage were described and illustrated. The larvae were fed only with microalgae Tetraselmis tetrathele and Chaetoceros gracilis from first protozoea until the second mysis, with about 90% survival rate; from the third mysis until the first postlarva they were fed with similar microalgae coupled with rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and Artemia nauplii. The embryonic and larval stages of P. semisulcatus are generally similar to those of other closely related species in the family Penaeidae, such as Melicertus canaliculatus, Fenneropenaeus merguiensis, and Marsupenaeus japonicus, except for the size and structure of diagnostic characters, setation of appendages and duration of metamorphoses. The change in the feeding habit during ontogeny was related to morphological transformation of the feeding apparatus of larvae and postlarvae. This paper is the first comprehensive and complete account of the early developmental stages of P. semisulcatus.  相似文献

Energy metabolism in early life stages of the shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis subjected to temperature reduction (26 and 20 °C) was determined using the activities of citrate synthase (CS) and pyruvate kinase (PK). At both temperatures, weight-specific activity of CS decreased throughout the ontogenetic development from protozoea II (PZ II) to postlarva XII–XIV (PL XII–XIV). PK activity reached a pronounced peak in PL V–VI, followed by a further decrease in PL XII–XIV. Temperature reduction produced variation in oxygen consumption rates (QO2), ammonia–N excretion and in enzyme activities. Ammonia–N excretion was higher at 20 °C in mysis III (M III), PL V–VI and PL XII–XIV, resulting in substantially lower O:N ratios in these stages. QO2 was increased in protozoea II (PZ II) and mysis I (M I) at 26 °C, while no difference in QO2 was detected in the subsequent stages at either temperature. This fact coincided with higher CS and PK activities in M III, PL V–VI and PL XII–XIV at 20 °C compared with 26 °C. Regressions between individual enzyme activities and dry weight exhibited slope values of 0.85–0.92 for CS and 1.1–1.2 for PK and temperature reduction was reflected by higher slope values at 20 than at 26 °C for both enzymes. Weight-specific CS activity was positively correlated with QO2 at 20 and 26 °C, and may thus be used as an indicator of aerobic metabolic rate throughout the early stages of F. paulensis. The variation in enzyme activities is discussed in relation to possible metabolic adaptations during specific ontogenetic events of the F. paulensis life cycle. Here, the catalytic efficiency of energy-metabolism enzymes was reflected in ontogenetic shifts in behaviour such as larval settlement and the adoption of a benthic existence in early postlarvae. In most cases, enhanced enzyme activities appeared to counteract negative effects of reduced temperature.  相似文献

The life cycle of Laodicea indica is described. In the Bismarck Sea this species shows a normal alternation of generations in the wet season; but in the dry season the cycle is contracted, and planulae give rise to gonothecae without formation of a hydroid colony. Medusae are liberated about 3 d after planula settlement. This life cycle pattern is previously unreported in hydromedusae. The possible adaptive value of such a life cycle and the evolution of polyp reduction in hydromedusan life cycles are discussed.  相似文献

The anamorph life cycle of the black yeastExophiala (Wangiella) dermatitidis is described. The fungus is dimorphic, yeast cells being the prevalent form of propagation. The fungus is strongly hydrophilic, probably completing its anamorph life cycle in submersion. Adaptation to dry conditions is slow. Types of conidiogenesis comprise annellidic, phialidic and sympodial reproduction, in addition to isotropic development. Phialoconidia fail to germinate under the conditions tested, and thus may have a function other than dispersal. Sterile, multicellular bodies resembling aCapronia teleomorph are described.  相似文献

A male prawn, Parapenaeopsis stylifera, collected in a haul, was found to be having an undeveloped right eye. The eyestalk was absent and eye pigment was located directly on the reduced basal segment. The observation is briefly discussed on a neurobiological basis.  相似文献

In 1983 the first specimens of the North American spionid polychaeteMarenzelleria viridis were found along the European mainland shore in the Ems estuary. Since then, this polychaete has spread over several estuaries around the North Sea and the Baltic. In the inner part of the Ems estuary juveniles were predominantly present in muddy sediments high in the intertidal zone; in more sandy sediments at higher salinities juveniles and adults co-occured. Detailed information was obtained at a muddy and at a sandy station. Gametes were present in the coelomic fluid from November through March. In May new recruits were found in the sediment samples, reaching densities of over 105 M−2 at the muddy station, andc. 2000 m−2 at the sandy station. During summer, densities decreased at the muddy station, coinciding with a density increase at the sandy station, suggesting migration of juveniles from a nursery to the adult habitat. Cage experiments showed that the decrease of juveniles at the muddy station could be attributed to migration and not to mortality due to predation. At the sandy habitat palps and anterior parts ofM. viridis made up 4–11% of the stomach content of juvenile plaice (Pleuronectes platessa). In juvenile flounder (Platichthys flesus) only in Aprilc. 10% of the stomach content consisted ofM. viridis. During 1983–1990 increasing densities ofM. viridis at the sandy habitat coincided with a reduced abundance ofNereis diversicolor, however, this inverse relationship was not found to be statistically significant. Density fluctuations ofM. viridis andCorophium volutator showed a significant positive relationship, the cause of which is not yet understood.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Bosmina longirostris in a large tropical reservoir, Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, are described. Population density showed two peaks associated with periods of high nutrient fluxes. Fecundity was always low. Two eggs per female was the maximum ever recorded. Instantaneous rates of birth, death and population growth calculated from field data using the egg ratio method are discussed. The rate of biomass change fluctuated in a regular pattern, probably linked to food availability or predation by a clupeid, Limnothrissa miodon.  相似文献

Six samples collected from the eastern Brazilian continental shelf, along the states of Bahia and Espírito Santo, during the REVIZEE Program were analysed. Three species of Macrocyprina were encountered in these samples. Macrocyprina maddocksae sp. nov. is described. This species is diagnosed by the following combined characteristics: carapace fairly small, its lateral surface with three or four small subcircular patches, one small, subtriangular patch at anteroventral margin, one small, elongate, patch at posteroventral margin; male appendages V strongly asymmetrical, left appendage larger than right, podomere II of left appendage subtriangular, not recurved. Four species of the genusMesocyclops (Cyclopoida: Cyclopidae) are reported from Israel:Mesocyclops kieferi Van de Velde, 1984,Mesocyclops aequatorialis similis Van de Velde, 1984,Mesocyclops ogunnus Onabamiro, 1957 andMesocyclops arcanus n.sp. The present work describes the seasonal changes in nucleic acid concentrations and amino acid profiles in the muscle of juvenile Parapenaeus longirostris and their relation to growth and nutritional condition. RNA content varied significantly between seasons, being the highest values attained in spring and the lowest in winter (p < 0.05). Similar results were obtained with RNA:protein and RNA:DNA ratios. In respect to total amino acid content (TAA), a significant increase from winter to spring was observed (p < 0.05) and the major essential amino acids (EAA) were arginine, histidine and leucine. Within non-essential amino acids (NEAA) glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine and proline were dominant. From winter to spring, a significant variation in NEAA content occurred (26.8; p < 0.05), mainly due to the significant increase of glutamic acid (79.1) and serine (66.7) (p < 0.05). EAA content did not vary significantly between seasons (p > 0.05). In opposition, during this period a significant decrease in the free amino acid content (FAA) was observed (p < 0.05); a higher percentage of decrease was attained in free non-essential (FNEAA – 42.9) in comparison to free essential amino acids (FEAA – 40.2). The significant increase in RNA and TAA contents from winter to spring may be related with protein synthesis. On the other hand, the lowest values obtained in winter may be due to a reduction in feeding activity; in this period the muscle protein must be progressively hydrolysed, which is evident with the higher FAA content. The liberated amino acids enter FAA pool and become available for energy production. In conclusion, it was evident that the seasonal cycle in activities such as feeding and growth with nucleic acids and amino acid analyses was noticed.  相似文献

The stomach content of 589 specimens of Eutrigla gurnardus (collected at quarterly intervals) have been analyzed to determine diet according to fish size and season. The results show that crustaceans (% No = 93%, %Weight = 81%) are the basic food and that teleostean fishes are quite important in the adult diet. The importance of nycthemeral migrators decreases significantly as size increases, whilst the importance of benthic prey increases inversely. In every size, the feeding intensity is greater at midday than in the morning. Larger prey are eaten in winter than in summer although feeding intensity is lower in winter.  相似文献

The stomach contents of 372 specimens of Aspitrigla obscura (collected at quarterly intervals) have been analyzed to determine diet according to fish size and season. The results show that crustaceans (%No = 96%, %Weight = 76%) are the basic food. For all sizes, half of diet is assured by necto-benthic crustaceans. In smaller sizes, the remaining half is formed by planktonic species, whilst in larger sizes they are substituted by nycthemeral migrators. The importance of planktonic prey is greater in the winter sample than in the other samples. In every size, the feeding intensity is greater in the midday sample than in the morning one.  相似文献

Crustaceans (% No = 93 %, % Weight = 63 %) and teleostean fish (% N = 6 %, % W = 30 %) constitute the basic food. Feeding habits change at c. 85 mm and again at c. 140 mm (size of sexual maturity) total length. The importance of nycthemeral migrators decreases with size, while the circalitoral benthos increase inversely. The larval development of three crabs of the Varunidae family, (Hemigrapsus sanguineus, H. penicillatus, and H. longitarsis), widely spread in Russian waters of the Sea of Japan, were studied under laboratory conditions. At a temperature of 20–22°C and a salinity of 32‰ about 30% of larvae a complete developmental cycle, including five zoeal stages and megalopa, took from 22 to 30 days. All larval stages are illustrated and described in detail. Zoea I and zoea II of the studied crabs are not distinguishable. Zoea III–V of these species differ in the number of dorsomedial setae on the abdominal somite I and in the number of setae on the posterodorsal arch. The megalopae of three Hemigrapsus species possess a different number of segments, aesthetascs and setae on the antennular exopod. In spite of the great similarity of larvae of genera Hemigrapsus and Eriocheir, the latter possesses a number of distinctive features in all developmental stages, supporting the separation of these genera.  相似文献

A population of Cordylophora caspia was studied during a number of years in interconnected waters of different salinity and pollution. The distribution pattern of the colonies is only partly accounted for by these properties of the water. Summary The sinus gland of Carcinus maenas consists of the swollen axonal endings of the neurosecretory cells of the major ganglia and acts as a storage release centre for the membrane bound neurosecretory material. These neurosecretory granules fall into five different types based on size and electron density. Their contents are released by exocytosis of the primary granules or smaller units budded from the primary granules.I thank Professor E. Naylor for his constant advice and Professor E. W. The effect of temperature on growth rate, shell size and shell shape in Krithe praetexta praetexta (Sars) was studied in four thermocultures. From July 1995 to June 1996, the cultures were kept in a continuously flowing open system pumping water from the intermediate watermass of the Gullmarn fjord, west coast of Sweden. Three cultures were kept at constant temperatures of 5, 10 and 14 °C, respectively. The fourth (reference) culture largely followed the natural variation in temperature. At the termination of the experiment, all living ostracods from a 125 m sieve were sampled from the cultures. Population age structures were analysed for the various thermocultures of K. praetexta praetexta. These were more shifted towards later ontogenetic stages with higher temperature, i.e. the ontogenetic development was more rapid in the warmer cultures. An alternative explanation is due to diapause causing cohorts to accumulate in some ontogenetic stages only when the temperature is constant. The differences in shell size of K. praetexta praetexta among the thermoconstant cultures were not statistically significant.  相似文献
