Water balance of conifer logs in early stages of decomposition   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Seasonal and long-term changes in the water balance of conifer logs during the first 8 years of decomposition were studied in an old-growth Pseudotsuga/Tsuga forest in the Oregon Cascade Mountains. Measurements were made of the moisture content of outer bark, inner bark, sapwood, and heartwood and of the flow of water into and out of logs of four species (Abies amabilis, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Thuja plicata, and Tsuga heterophylla). After the logs had decomposed from 1 to 2 years, 38–47% of the canopy throughfall landing upon them ran off the surface, 29–34% leached from the bottom, and 21–30% was absorbed and evaporated. After 8 years of decomposition, water entering and then leaching from logs increased 1.3 times while runoff decreased a similar amount. The proportion of water stored by and evaporated from logs in this study indicates that in old growth forests they may intercept 2–5% of the canopy throughfall to the forest floor and that, even in early stages of decomposition, they may affect the hydrological cycle of Pacific Northwest old-growth forests.This is paper 2945 of the Forest Research Laboratory, Oregon State University, Corvallis  相似文献

This study was designed to determine whether ectomycorrhizal mats (ECM) are more likely to be present in soils at the base of common understory trees than in soils distant from trees and to determine whether occurrence of ECM is related to tree size. Three understory trees were studied: Pacific yew (Taxus brevifolia Nutt.), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.)Sarg), and vine maple (Acer circinatum Pursh). The 12 sites studied represent a range of climatic conditions and management histories. More than 2,900 plots were surveyed over 18 months. The incidence of ECM was higher at the base of all three species than in control plots. Incidence of mats was also positively correlated with tree size. Old-growth forest stands of mixed species composition provide the opportunity to study species-specific influences on soil properties. We monitored rates of nitrogen mineralization, nitrification and an index of ammonium and nitrate uptake in a mixed old-growth stand of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) and western redcedar (Thuja plicata) over a two-year period. Litter and mineral soil (0–10-cm depth) were sampled adjacent to ten large trees of each species. After initial characterization of litter and soil, buried bags were incubated in both layers for ca. 2-month intervals. Soil and litter pH was lowest near western hemlocks. Nitrification, nitrate concentrations, and percent uptake as nitrate differed among the tree species; rates were highest near western redcedars. For all species, percent nitrification and nitrate uptake rate were higher in soil than in litter. The results indicate species-specific effects on ammonium and nitrate production and uptake within this forest type.The research described in this article has been funded in part by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Rhizomes of bearded iris plants of three varieties were found to harbor latentBotrytis convoluta infections which were not affected by surface sterilization. Apparently healthy rhizomes of the cultivars Apricot Glory, Sunset Blaze, and Cotlet were found to be 67, 84, and 90 % infected, respectively. Ten to 20 % of the offsets from Cotlet plants had latent infections. Latent infections are an important means of survival during the summer months when the fungus is inactive. They are also potentially important as a means of transporting inoculum from infested to disease-free areas.Portion of a Ph. D. 倒木是高寒森林生态系统重要的碳(C)库和养分库,其不同分解阶段的质量变化,是认识倒木分解过程中C和养分释放的重要基础。以一个分解序列的岷江冷杉(Abies faxoniana)倒木为研究对象,研究了心材、边材和树皮在5个分解阶段的C:N:P化学计量特征,以及木质素和纤维素含量动态。结果显示:I至III分解阶段,随着分解程度加深,树皮C含量升高,而心材和边材C含量降低,从IV分解阶段开始倒木各组分C含量均开始显著降低。除III分解阶段的心材外,倒木各组分N含量总体表现为随着分解程度加深而增加的趋势,除边材N含量在V分解阶段时显著升高外,其余组分均未达到显著性水平。心材和树皮P含量表现为先降后升的变化趋势,最小值分别出现在III和II分解阶段;边材P含量表现为随着分解程度加深而增加。在同一分解阶段,树皮相对于边材和心材均具有最低的C:N:P化学计量比,易分解比例Fm也表明树皮更易于分解。边材在I和II分解阶段的C:N:P化学计量比最高,心材在III到V分解阶段C:N:P化学计量比最高。心材C:P、树皮和边材的C:N和C:P临界值与N和P的初始值成反比。纤维素含量随着倒木分解而降低,不同分解阶段的纤维素含量表现为:心材>边材>树皮;但木质素含量随着分解程度加深而增加,表现为:树皮>边材>心材;倒木3个组分纤维素含量下降均快于木质素,此外,IV和V分解阶段的树皮木质素与纤维素比值显著增高,且一直处于较高水平。统计分析结果表明:倒木N含量显著影响不同分解阶段木质素和纤维素分解。由生态化学计量学理论推测:树皮分解前期易受N限制,整个分解阶段均易受P限制,心材和边材在整个分解阶段均易受N和P限制。  相似文献

When does dead wood turn into a substrate for spruce replacement?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Question: How many years must elapse for freshly fallen Picea abies stems to be transformed into a substrate for P. abies recruitment? Location: Natural sub‐alpine spruce forest, 1200–1300 m a.s.l., western Carpathians, Poland. Methods: Coarse woody debris (CWD) was measured on nine plots with a total area of 4.3 ha. All individuals of P. abies regeneration growing on dead wood were counted and their age was estimated. Decay rate of logs was determined using dendrochronological cross‐dating of samples from logs in different decay stages. Results: Although CWD covered only 4% of the forest floor, 43% of the saplings were growing on decaying logs and stumps. The highest abundance of P. abies recruitment occurs on logs 30–60 years after tree death, when wood is in decay stages no. 4–7 (on an 8 degree decay scale). However, much earlier colonization is possible. The first seedlings may germinate on a log during the second decade after tree death and survive for decades. Their slow growth is possibly due to the gradual progressive decomposition of wood. Conclusions: This study confirms the importance of decaying wood for P. abies recruitment. The decaying logs exhibit continuous and favourable conditions for the germination of P. abies seeds throughout their decay process. Logs, irrespective of their decay stage and age, are colonized by young seedlings. This recruitment bank is constantly renewed.  相似文献

Summary Plasmid DNA containing the reporter gene uidA encoding -glucuronidase (GUS), driven by the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter, was introduced on high-velocity microprojectiles into cultured cotyledons of Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco]. Transient gene expression was measured by counting the number of distinct loci of GUS activity per cotyledon. Contrary to published results on angiosperms, repeated bombardments did not increase expression in Douglas-fir. Expression varied significantly among cotyledons from different seedlings. The amount of time between DNA delivery and treatment of cotyledons with auxins and cytokinins strongly affected GUS expression. The optimal cytokinin pretreatment produced an average of 20 loci per cotyledon. In several experiments, more than 95% of the treated cotyledons exhibited at least some transient expression. Summary The effects of high-concentration, 2-h liquid pulses of N6-benzylaminopurine (BA) and thidiazuron (TD) on adventitious bud and shoot formation were tested in cotyledons of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Seedling age proved important; on average, cotyledons from the youngest seedlings formed 10-fold more buds than cotyledons from the oldest seedlings. Optimal cytokinin concentrations for the youngest cotyledons were 400 and 800 M BA, and 100 and 200 M TD. Shoots developed best from buds induced with 300, 400, and 800 M BA. Four gelling agents were tested; BRL agarose yielded more than three times the number of buds, and Gelrite nearly twice the number of buds, as either Sigma agar or Difco Bacto-Agar. Summary Pollen-stigma compatibility relationships are reported for 55 filbert cultivars (cvs) (Corylus avellana L.). A total of 11 S-alleles have been identified amongst 36 cvs for which one or both S-alleles have been established. Amylocystis lapponica (Romell) Singer is a widely distributed wood‐decaying polypore fungus found throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Despite its huge distribution range it occurs rather patchily and seems narrowly associated with old‐growth forest stands. Notably, it has been used as an ‘indicator species’, believed to reflect the long‐term presence of dead wood, naturalness of forest stands, and indirectly, species richness and possibly composition. In this study we focused on the last issue – whether or not there is a link between the occurrence of A. lapponica and the species richness and composition of other wood‐decaying fungi. Selecting log characteristics and microclimate as similar as possible, we compared 12 logs with and 12 logs without visible fruit bodies of A. lapponica to examine: 1) if visible fruit bodies corresponded with molecular identification of the mycelia, 2) if fungal species richness and composition of the substrate were related to A. lapponica occurrence, and 3) if A. lapponica was restricted to certain parts of the log. Fungal species were recorded by inspecting visible fruit bodies and by culture isolation and ITS sequencing from wood disc samples. Laboratory and field identification of A. lapponica had 71% correspondence, and mycelia were identified in two logs without visible fruit bodies. Twice as many fungal species were detected using ITS sequencing compared to fruit body identification. Total species richness was similar between the two log categories, but number of species per log was slightly higher in A. lapponica logs. Antrodia serialis (Fr.) Donk, and possibly also Fomitopsis pinicola (Sw.:Fr.) P. Karst. and Phellinus nigrolimitatus (Romell) Bourdot & Galzin, occurred more frequently in A. lapponica logs. Mycelia of A. lapponica were restricted to less decayed parts of the wood in the centre of the middle part of the logs.  相似文献

Summary Acetylene reduction to ethylene by filtrates of rumen contents has been studied. The Km values for acetylene are comparable to those reported for nitrogenase enzymes from N2 fixing bacteria. The enhancement of ethylene production from acetylene by phosphate and pyruvate suggests that the reduction was carried out by anaerobic microorganisms. Acetylene reduction occurred in the rumen only when a high nitrogen diet was fed to the sheep. Some microorganisms isolated from the rumen contents were grown anaerobically under N2 gas on agar not supplemented with combined nitrogen. Methane production by filtrates of rumen contents was found to be inhibited by acetylene.  相似文献

Summary Thalli of Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm., a nitrogen-fixing epiphyte common in mesic temperate forests, were collected in a Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) forest near Corvallis, Oregon, and maintained for 20 to 40 days in controlled-environment chambers with atmospheric CO2 concentrations of 374 and 700 ll-1. Nitrogenase activity, which was assayed by the acetylene reduction method, was approximately doubled in the lichen maintained in elevated CO2. Increases in nitrogen fixation by lichens may be an important part of the integrated ecosystem response to rising CO2.  相似文献

Decaying wood is an important structural and functional component of forests: it contributes to generate habitat diversity, acts as either sink or source of nutrients, and plays a preponderant role in soil formation. Thus, decaying wood might likely have measurable effects on chemical properties of the underlying soil. We hypothesized that decaying wood would have a stronger effect on soil as decomposition advances and that such effect would vary according to wood quality. Twenty logs from two species with contrasting wood properties (Dacryodes excelsa Vahl. and Swietenia macrophylla King) and at two different decay stages (6 and 15 years after falling) were selected, and soil under and 50 cm away from decaying logs was sampled for soil organic matter (SOM) fractions [NaOH-extractable and water-extractable organic matter -(WEOM)] and properties (WEOM aromaticity). NaOH-extractable C and WEOM were higher in the soil influenced by 15-year-old logs, while the degree of aromaticity of WEOM was higher in the soil influenced by the 6-year-old logs. Decaying logs did influence properties of the underlying soil with differing effects according to the species since there was more NaOH-extractable C in the soil associated to D. excelsa logs and more WEOM in the soil associated to S. macrophylla older logs. It is proposed that such effects occurred through changes in the relative quantity and quality of different SOM fractions, as influenced by species and advancement in decomposition. Through its effect on SOM and nutrient dynamics, decaying wood can contribute to the spatial heterogeneity of soil properties, and can affect process of soil formation and nutrient cycling. A closed double-leaf-disk (DLD) assay is presented which prevents escape (runoff) of spider mites and exposes them to treated leaf tissue during the entire test period. The physiological (direct) toxicity of acaricide residue can be estimated with this assay without the interference of behavioral factors. In contrast, runoff is often a major component of the total mortality in open single-leaf-disk (SLD) assays, in addition to direct mortality. Fenpropathrin, a highly repellent pyrethroid acaricide, caused primarily runoff and little direct mortality in SLD assays withPanonychus ulmi (Koch). When runoff and direct mortality were combined, concentration-response lines andlc 50 values were identical to those obtained with the closed DLD assay. Assays with the organotin fenbutatin oxide gave similar results, suggesting that the runoff response should be included when estimating the residual toxicity of these compounds with the standard SLD assay. In fact, excluding runoff mortality from the analysis may underestimate the toxicity of foliar residue. Providing residue-free non-leaf surface inside the DLD cage caused a shift to the right of the concentration-response line, resulting in higherlc 50s. The DLD assay can be employed for mite species which are difficult to confine, and in toxicological studies of repellent or irritating acaricides. Acetylene reduction was observed with ferrousiron-oxidizingThiobacillus ferrooxidans, as expected from previous studies with this bacterium. Acetylene reduction was also found during the growth ofT. ferrooxidans on tetrathionate. OnlyLeptospirillum ferrooxidans, one of several other phylogenetically diverse, ferrous-iron-and/or sulfur-oxidizing acidophilic microorganisms, also reduced acetylene. A reduction of the oxygen concentration in the culture atmosphere was necessary to alleviate inhibition of nitrogenase activity. DNA sequences homologous tonif structural genes were found in both organisms. Diazotrophic growth ofL. ferrooxidans was inferred from an increase in iron oxidation in ammonium-free medium when the oxygen concentration was limited and from apparent inhibition by acetylene under these conditions.  相似文献

Summary This study examines several aspects of nitrogen fixation by Purshia tridentata (Pursh) D.C., a rosaceous shrub widespread in the Central Oregon pumice region, especially as an understory species in Pinus ponderosa and Pinus contorta forests. Acetylene reduction was used to assay nodule activity in both field and greenhouse plants. The maximum rates were observed at 20°C, although summer soil temperatures were frequently around 15°C, at which a much lower rate was observed. Acetylene reduction by excised nodules was linear for 5 h and then slowly declined, finally ceasing after 19 h. Nodule activity declined in water stressed plants, essentially ceasing in plants with xylem pressure potentials below –25 bars.Field studies at five sites revealed that nodule activity began in mid-May or early June when soil temperature at 20 cm increased to above 10°C. Activity began later and remained lower until July 20 in plants located under Pinus contorta, probably because of the cooler temperatures at this site. Nodule activity at all sites was maximum in June and July. In late July, nodule activity declined sharply, corresponding with moisture stress readings in the –25 bar range. Acetylene reduction rates declined sharply during the night; this decline was even more severe late in the season.Only 46 per cent of Purshia plants were nodulated. Several possible explanations for this low nodulation are discussed, but the primary reasons appear to be low soil temperature and unfavorable moisture conditions. Previous speculations that Purshia may contribute significant amounts of nitrogen to the ecosystems in which it occurs are disputed using estimates based on seasonal acetylene reduction rates and a determination of nodule biomass at one site. Summary In a continuing search for field sources of endomycorrhizal fungi that tolerate high levels of available phosphorus in soil, samples were obtained from long-established liberally fertilized hops (Humulus lupulus L.) and peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) fields. In hops fields, where extractable P (Bray) levels ranged from 21–196 ppm, spores of twoAcaulospora spp. and sixGlomus spp. were isolated. From peppermint fields with P levels of 44 to 244 ppm, spores of oneAcaulospora sp., fourGlomus spp. and oneGigaspora sp. were obtained. Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi were found colonizing most roots to some extent, despite the very high fertility of several sites. Although percentages of colonization in hops tended to be low, ranging from 0 to 9.3%, colonizations in peppermint roots were considerably higher averaging 26.5% between the sampled fields, notwithstanding P levels as high as 244 ppm. Curiously, considerable external VAM hyphae were found adherent to or entangling roots in many cases, even where percentage of root length with internal VAM structures was low. Summary Coprosma robusta Raoul plants grown in plus- and minus-nitrogen sand culture showed no significant response to removal of stipules. Acetylene reduction assays for nitrogenase on leaves and stipules gave negative results for six Coprosma species. Two unwashed root samples showed slight acetylene reduction and this was ascribed to casual aerobic rhizosphere organisms.  相似文献

Decomposition of oak Quercus spp. logs (25 35 cm diameter, 3 m long) was compared among log substrates in Oregon, Minnesota. Kansas and North Carolina during the first five years on the ground. Decomposition of whole logs (weighted by substrate) averaged 0.069 yr-1 (±0.16 SD). but followed a 2-exponential model (k = 0.12 yr-1 year 1 and k = 0.06 yr -1 years 2 5), reflecting qualitative differences among log substrates (outer and inner bark, sapwood and heartwood). Rapid loss from bark substrates contributed to the initial rapid decay rate. Sapwood decay rate averaged 0.15 yr-1 and dominated the second log decay rate. Heartwood lost only 6% mass during the first five years, for an overall decay rate of 0.012 yr-1 that likely will represent a longer-term third exponential decay rate.
Carbon loss amounted to ca 5 kg yr-1 per 170 kg log. Nutrient concentrations generally declined during the first five years, but nitrogen, sulfur, and sodium accumulated in sapwood and heartwood during this period. Sulfur content increased in all substrates and doubled in whole logs during this 5-yr period. Complex patterns of nutrient content suggest patterns of microbial colonization and nutrient utilization. Polynomial models were developed to describe rates of carbon and nutrient flux in log substrates.  相似文献
