Otoliths of Oreochromis niloricus initiate as separate protein granules, surrounded by numerous dark particles. These granules merge to form the sub-primordium, after a layer of calcium and a layer of protein has been added to each one. Large amounts of protein are accreted on to the subprimordium to form the primordium. Calcification takes place shortly afterwards. In the otocyst lumen filaments and vesicles are abundant and associated. They seem to contribute to the proteins of the primordium and the calcified otolith. Mitochondria, Golgi complexes and intracellular granules are abundant in the epithelium, from which vesicles extrude.  相似文献

The chronology of development of Oreochromis niloticus embryos was examined by scanning electron microscopy (S.E.M.) and the external structures which evolved during the embryonic period were analysed. Twenty-four stages of embryonic development of this fish at 25°C are described with emphasis on the cleavage phases and morphogenesis of external organs and tissues. Because the development of internal organs could not be observed under S.E.M., the necessary investigation was completed by light microscopy.  相似文献

Sex ratio, size at maturity, maturity stages, fecundity and egg diameter of Oreochromis niloticus from Coatetelco Lake, Morelos State, Mexico, were studied from January to December 1993. Sex ratio (male:female) was approximately 1:1.02. Length at maturity was 117 mm (males) and 120 mm (females). The fecundity ranged between 104 and 709 eggs, with egg diameter from 1,000 to 3,000 microns. The gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic index indicate that the species breeds during summer and winter.  相似文献

The influence of rabbit dung on water quality, plankton occurrence and Nile tilapia growth (Oreochromis niloticus) was studied. pH and total alkalinity increased, dissolved oxygen concentration decreased but not below the critical level whilst the nitrogen parameters were not affected in a significant way. An important increase of plankton was recorded and was reflected in a decrease of transparency: the phytoplankton density was 2.7 times that of the controls. Tilapia growth rate in the manure treatments was 5.1 times that of the control group; no significant difference in survival rates was observed.  相似文献

The reproductive season of tilapia was studied by monthly samplings at Emiliano Zapata dam, Morelos State, Mexico. From February 1999 through February 2000 a sample of 50 fish was taken from the commercial catch (castnet, 6.5 cm of mesh size). The observed sex ratio was 1:1.29 (females:males) (chi(2)=10.26; p<0.05). The tilapia reached maturity at 151.3 mm (females) and 152.0 mm (males) of total length. Rainy (August) and dry (February) seasons were determined as the breeding period. Fecundity variation was better correlated with length (r=0.7473: p<0.002) than with weight (r=0.7395; p<0.002). The fecundity ranged between 243 and 847 oocytes per fish, with egg diameter from 300 to 3 700 microm. Intensive breeding activity in August and February coincide with phytoplankton biomass increase.  相似文献

The majority of chromosomes in Oreochromis niloticus, as with most fish karyotyped to date, cannot be individually identified owing to their small size. As a first step in establishing a physical map for this important aquaculture species of tilapia we have analyzed the location of the vertebrate telomeric repeat sequence, (TTAGGG)n, in O. niloticus. Southern blot hybridization analysis and a Bal31 sensitivity assay confirm that the vertebrate telomeric repeat is indeed present at O. niloticus chromosomal ends with repeat tracts extending for 4-10 kb on chromosomal ends in erythrocytes. Fluorescent in situ hybridization revealed that (TTAGGG)n is found not only at telomeres, but also at two interstitial loci on chromosome 1. These data support the hypothesis that chromosome 1, which is significantly larger than all the other chromosomes in the karyotype, was produced by the fusion of three chromosomes and explain the overall reduction of chromosomal number from the ancestral teleost karyotype of 2n=48 to 2n=44 observed in tilapia.  相似文献

The effects of veratrine have been investigated in mammalian, amphibian, and crustacean muscle, but not in fish. In this work, the action of veratrine was studied in the lateral muscle of the freshwater teleost Oreochromis niloticus after intramuscular injection. Histoenzymological typing and electron microscopy of muscle fibers before and 15, 30, and 60 min after veratrine injection (10 ng/kg fish) were used to indirectly assess the morphological changes and the oxidative and m-ATPase activities. In some cases, muscles were pretreated with tetrodotoxin to determine whether the ultrastructural changes were the result of Na(+) channel activation by veratrine. Veratrine altered the metabolism of fibers mainly after 30 min. Oxidative fibers showed decreased NADH-TR activity, whereas that of glycolytic and oxidative-glycolytic type fibers increased. There was no change in the m-ATPase activity of the three fiber types, except at 60 min postveratrine, when a novel fiber type, which showed no reversal after acidic and alkaline preincubations, appeared. Ultrastructural damage involved sarcomeres, myofibrils, and mitochondria, but the T-tubules remained intact. Pretreatment with tetrodotoxin (1 ng/ml) prevented the ultrastructural changes caused by veratrine. These results show that in fish skeletal muscle veratrine produces some effects that are not seen in mammalian muscle.  相似文献

The process of morphological and functional regeneration was followed on a tilapid fish, a cross of Oreochromis aureus × Oreochromis niloticus, by observations on movements and the use of X-rays. A four-year-old adult fish that lost its tail as post larva, including ten vertebrae, was able to reconstruct a novel and shorter central skeleton, including a specially modified urostyle. The enlarged and strengthened pterygiophores and their junctions with the dorsal and anal spine formed a fast-holding base for the fins, the posterior part of which largely performed the functions of the missing caudal fin. Although the fish was much shorter than usual, this male behaved and functioned normally. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

East African cichlids have evolved feeding apparatus morphologies adapted to their diverse feeding behaviors. The evolution of the oral jaw morphologies is accomplished by the diversity of bone formation during development. To further understand this evolutionary process, we examined the skeletal elements of the jaw and their temporal and sequential emergence, categorized by developmental stages, using the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus as a model cichlid. We found that chondrogenesis started in Stage 17. The deposition of osteoid for the dermal bones commenced in Stage 18. The uptake of calcium dramatically shifted from the surface of larvae to the gills in Stage 20. The bone mineralization of the skeleton began in Stage 25. These data provide important information regarding the sequential events of craniofacial development in East African cichlids and lay the groundwork for studying the molecular mechanisms underlying adaptation of jaw structure to feeding behavior.  相似文献

The Lake Victoria ecosystem has experienced changes associated with fishing levels, a rise in lake level in the 1960s, fish introductions, and human activities in the drainage basin. Following the fish introductions of the 1950s and early 1960s, Oreochromis niloticus has become the most abundant and commercially important species among the tilapiines, and the only species which has managed to co-exist with the Nile perch in Lakes Victoria and Kyoga. There is, however, little published information on the biology and ecology of the specie in the new habitats. It has therefore been found necessary to initiate studies on the characteristics of O. niloticus in Lake Victoria.  相似文献

The normal organ morphology and function in fishes varies according to several natural factors, and such variability is found in liver. Knowledge about the normal liver microanatomy is fundamental to pathological evaluation. Even though gender and temperature are important factors for modulating morphophysiological processes in fishes, their influences on liver stroma are virtually unknown. Because temperature- and gender-related changes exist in liver parenchyma, we predict both factors should also influence the normal stromal structure. Using Nile tilapia as a model, we undertook a study to: 1) establish baseline quantitative structural data on the hepatic stroma (and intimately associated pancreatic acini); 2) compare data with those available from other species, namely, salmonids that do not have a liver with pancreatic acini; and 3) test our hypothesis that, within normal healthy limits, the stroma and its structural components may vary significantly with temperature and gender. We used 1-year-old male and female specimens acclimated to 17 degrees C (breeding noncompatible) and 27 degrees C (breeding compatible) for 45 days. Basic morphometric fish parameters were recorded. After estimation of liver volume, the organ was sliced and pieces systematically sampled for light microscopy. Stereology allowed estimation of the relative volumes of organ components. The total volumes were computed by combining the relative volumes with the total liver volumes. Nile tilapia of both genders, held at 17 vs. 27 degrees C, showed structural quantitative differences in the relative volumes of stroma and most of its components, and in the total volumes of certain stromal elements. The total volume of the stroma and of associated pancreatic acini did not differ. We first established that, in fishes, the total amount (volume) of liver biliary ducts and of eosinophilic granule cells might significantly change (increase and decrease, respectively) with a higher acclimation temperature. Indeed, virtually all the stereological changes were, essentially, temperature- and not gender-related. At 27 degrees C, parallel changes in the parenchyma caused a decreased liver volume and hepatic-somatic index (HSI). The relative volumetric proportion of stroma vs. parenchyma in tilapia is higher than in salmonids. The differences found in this study could not be detected with a qualitative approach, thus stressing the importance of using stereology for analyzing histological patterns and for establishing reliable baseline values in healthy conditions. It was also anticipated that in experimental settings with fish the baseline liver stromal architecture may be different according to temperature and breeding status; in consequence, the effects of the tested variable may also diverge. Our data do not fully explain the lower liver volume and HSI at 27 degrees C, thus justifying studies on the parenchyma, particularly on cell size and number.  相似文献

Some adaptations of the synaptonemal complex (SC) whole-mounting technique first used in plants permitted its application to meiotic studies in tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Direct observation of the chromosome pairing process and bivalent structure during the meiotic prophase of this fish species by light and electron microscopy permitted the analysis of SCs in autosomes and the possible identification of sex chromosomes. The analysis of SCs in spermatocytes of O. niloticus revealed that all 22 bivalent chromosomes completely paired, except for the occurrence of a size heteromorphism in the terminal region of the largest bivalent associated with the presence of an incompletely paired segment during the synapsis process, which may be the cytological visualization of an XX/XY sex chromosome system in this species.  相似文献

The oxygen uptake ( V O2), breathing frequency ( f R), breath volume ( V S.R), gill ventilation ( V G) and oxygen extraction (%) from the ventilatory current of four groups of Oreochromis niloticus during graded hypoxia were measured under the following acclimation temperatures: 20. 25. 30 and 35°C. The critical oxygen tensions ( P O2), determined from V O2 v. P O2 of inspired water at each experimental temperature were, respectively. 19±1±3±1. 18±0±4±9, 29±7± 4±1 and 30±2± 0.6 mmHg. The f R remained nearly constant during the reductions of O2 at all the temperatures studied. V G increased discretely from normoxic levels until the P O2 was reached, below which it assumed extremely high values (17-fold higher or more). The increases observed in V G resulted, at all the acclimation temperatures, in an elevation in V S.R rather than in f R. The extraction of O2 decreased gradually from normoxia until the P O2 was reached, below which an abrupt reduction of extraction was recorded, except at 35°C when fish showed a gradual reduction in extraction just below the tension of 80 mmHg.  相似文献

Pancreatic development and the relationship of the islets with the pancreatic, hepatic, and bile ducts were studied in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, from hatching to the onset of maturity at 7 months. The number of islets formed during development was counted, using either serial sections or dithizone staining of isolated islets. There was a general increase in islet number with both age and size. Tilapia housed in individual tanks grew more quickly and had more islets than siblings of the same age left in crowded conditions. The pancreas is a compact organ in early development, and at 1 day posthatch (dph) a single principal islet, positive for all hormones tested (insulin, SST-14, SST-28, glucagon, and PYY), is partially surrounded by exocrine pancreas. However, the exocrine pancreas becomes more disseminated in older fish, following blood vessels along the mesenteries and entering the liver to form a hepatopancreas. The epithelium of the pancreatic duct system from the intercalated ducts to the main duct entering the duodenum was positive for glucagon and SST-14 in 8 and 16 dph tilapia. Individual insulin-immunopositive cells were found in one specimen. At this early stage in development, therefore, the pancreatic duct epithelial cells appear to be pluripotent and may give rise to the small islets found near the pancreatic ducts in 16-37 dph tilapia. Glucagon, SST-14, and some PPY-positive enteroendocrine cells were present in the intestine of the 8 dph larva and in the first part of the intestine of the 16 dph juvenile. Glucagon and SST-14-positive inclusions were found in the apical cytoplasm of the mid-gut epithelium of the 16 dph tilapia. These hormones may have been absorbed from the gut lumen, since they are produced in both the pancreatic ducts and the enteroendocrine cells. At least three hepatic ducts join the cystic duct to form the bile duct, which runs alongside the pancreatic duct to the duodenum.  相似文献

Summary Ontogenetic changes of brain ganglioside concentration and composition have been followed in the teleost fishSarotherodon mossambicus Cichlidae) from the 1st day post hatching to the adult stage, in order to correlate these with findings in higher vertebrates. During the developmental period from hatching to the transition to free swimming, which comes along with maximum rate of synaptogenesis, a sharp rise in the brain ganglioside content occurs, which is mainly due to the trisialoganglioside GT1b. In the following phase of myelination (characterized in birds and mammals by an increase in GM1, GM1 and GM4) accretion of the novel and so far unidetified fraction (GM2) occurs, which is highly enriched in the brain stem. The results obtained are discussed with respect to gangliosides as useful biochemical markers for brain development and maturation in all vertebrates.  相似文献
