Urbanization often has negative impacts on wildlife, nevertheless many species can persist in heavily modified habitats. Understanding factors that promote species persistence in urbanizing landscapes is therefore important for maintaining biodiversity in changing landscapes and may inform more biodiversity-friendly development. We investigated effects of landscape-scale variables on habitat occupancy of Smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) in the Inner Gulf of Thailand. In this internationally important wetland complex, 86% of natural habitats have been altered and are now highly urbanized. We conducted track and sign surveys in 60, 25 km2 grid cells encompassing 1,474 km2. Within each cell, we quantified the landscape cover types including urban areas, natural habitat (predominately thin ribbons of mangrove along waterways), agriculture, aquaculture, and potential prey availability using a GIS and field surveys. We used occupancy models to identify habitat variables that affected probability of detection and occupancy. Estimated otter occupancy, based on the top model, was 0.33 ± 0.07 (95% CI 0.18–0.48) and detection probability was 0.50 ± 0.05 (95% CI 0.41–0.60). Otter occupancy was positively associated with the proportion of natural habitat and the cover of traditional aquaculture ponds, but negatively associated with agriculture and urban cover. The remaining natural patches appear to act as critical refuges for otter, allowing them to persist in an otherwise heavily transformed landscape. Because aquaculture ponds are likely important prey sources for otters, it may lead to conflict with aquaculture farmers. Further studies of feeding and movement patterns in cooperation with aquaculture farmers would be beneficial for developing detailed management plans for the species in this human dominated landscape.  相似文献

Landscape connectivity analysis is a major tool in supporting biodiversity conservation. Several methodologies have been developed to tackle it by following two main paths. The first path exploits graph approaches and models focal nodes’ connections on a resistance/conductance matrix depending on focal species’ movement potential. The second path considers geometrical pattern analyses based on the calculation of structural landscape metrics. These approaches separately investigate functional and structural features of the landscape, and may come short of a total definition if used separately. Here we propose a new scalable, modular, participative and open-source procedure based on Fuzzy logic to combine the functional and structural aspects of connectivity. We applied this method on the highly fragmented landscape of the Po Plain, focusing on its rare and endangered plain springs named fontanili. We identified an expert panel and involved it in the assignation of permeability values of land use classes with respect to the capacity of movement of animal species typical of fontanili. We concurrently performed a quantitative evaluation of the landscape fragmentation with a moving window. We found that the functional and structural evaluations were poorly correlated in the area under study (Pearson's r = −0.35, p < 0.001). We thus integrated these two non-overlapping analyses of the landscape by Fuzzy logic using thresholds and combination weights obtained from questionnaires proposed to the expert panel. The resulting index, termed Fuzzy Functionality Index (FFI), improved the level of information associated with landscape classification. By merging functional and structural aspects of the landscape, the FFI allowed us to discriminate different functional values of equally permeable parcels and vice versa. We demonstrate that FFI may act as a conductance measure in a circuit theory approach, highlighting ecological corridors between focal points of species’ distribution. We present FFI as an effective predictive index to inspect complex and non-linear landscape dynamics.  相似文献

Modelling landscape connectivity represents one of the central challenges for conservation of natural resources, especially in human dominated landscapes. Many different methods have been developed to this effect, but their assumptions and limitations have been largely ignored. Using high resolution GPS tracking data from brown bears (Ursus arctos) in central Italy, we investigated the influence of behavioural state (movement vs other behaviours), sex, and algorithms, namely least cost path and circuit theory, on the identification of structural corridors. In particular, considering that most studies does not account for behavioural states and/or individual characteristics, and that basically all studies consider only a single corridor algorithm, we performed (1) a within-algorithm comparison, under the hypothesis that both behavioural states and sex would influence prediction of structural corridors, and (2) a between-algorithm comparison, under the hypothesis that different algorithms would predict different corridors. We found that the impact of sex and/or behavioural state was substantial. On average, least cost path corridors for moving females were 4.7 km apart (st.dev = 7.6 km) from corridors for moving males, and 5.0 km apart (st.dev = 7.2 km) from corridors not considering sex and behaviour. The same was true for circuit theory corridors. The between-algorithm comparison showed that the two corridor models yielded almost identical results, with >80% of the least cost path corridors falling into the two top deciles for the corresponding circuit theory corridors.Our results suggest that the failure to consider an animal’s behavioural state and/or intraspecific differences may result in misidentification of corridors, with potential misallocation of the limited conservation resources available.  相似文献

Winter oilseed rape (OSR, Brassica napus) cropping is often associated with an intensive use of pesticides. The transformation of structurally rich landscapes into more monotonous landscapes may be partly responsible for this, because non-crop habitats believed to benefit natural enemies have been eliminated. We examined the influence of field (soil quality, nitrogen fertilization) and landscape characteristics (OSR area and isolation, non-crop area, landscape diversity, proportions of grassy fallows and woody areas) on three major European OSR pest groups: pollen beetles, stem weevils, and brassica pod midges. Twenty-nine landscape sectors ranging from structurally poor to complex were studied at eight spatial scales (radii 250–2000 m) centered in the studied OSR fields. Abundances of pollen beetles and stem weevils were significantly positively correlated with soil quality and negatively related to OSR area in the surroundings. Generally, abundances of all groups were positively related to woody areas, but not related to grassy fallow area. Pod midges and stem weevils tended to respond primarily to landscape variables at small (250–500 m) and medium (1000–1250 m) scales, while pollen beetles responded at medium to large (1000–2000 m) scales. The results are discussed in relation to differences in overwintering strategies and mobility of pest insects. Strategies at the field and landscape level, aiming to reduce pest pressure in OSR fields, are also discussed.  相似文献

In this study, 169 stream lily (Helmholtzia glaberrima) seedlings from six micro-drainages were genotyped with AFLP markers to quantify the impact that topographic landscape features and altitude may have in shaping patterns of genetic diversity within individual populations. A global analysis of genetic diversity detected significant genetic differentiation among micro-drainages (FST = 0.22, P < 0.01). The observed genetic structure of sampled sites conformed to a hierarchical model of gene flow. Assignment tests also supported a hierarchical model of gene flow as only one dispersal event among the sampled micro-drainages was detected. This suggests that opportunities for seed dispersal in H. glaberrima are highly constrained by patterns of hydrographic networks even at a local scale. In contrast, altitude had little impact on partitioning of genetic diversity as no increase in genetic diversity was evident among individuals in the upper (0.18 ± 0.02), and lower (0.17 ± 0.02) areas of micro-drainages. Overall these results suggest that the influence of freshwater landscape features can vary widely the effect on the patterns of genetic diversity of seedlings in stream lily populations.  相似文献

Numerous species of soil bacteria which flourish in the rhizosphere of plants or around plant tissues stimulate plant growth and reduce nematode population by antagonistic behavior. These bacteria are collectively known as PGPR (plant growth promoting rhizobacteria). The effects of six isolates of PGPR Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Serratia marcescens, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus, were studied on tomato plant growth and root knot nematode reproduction after 45 days from nematode infection. The highest number of shoot dry weight/g (43.00 g) was detected in the plant treated with S. marcescens; then P. putida (34.33 g), B. amyloliquefaciens (31.66 g), P. fluorescens (30.0 g), B. subtilis (29.0 g), B. cereus (27.0 g) and nematode alone (untreated) 20 g/plant. While the highest number of plant height was observed when plant was treated with S. marcescens, P. fluorescens, P. putida, B. amyloliquefaciens and P. putida 52.66, 50.66, 48 and 48 cm respectively. No significant differences were seen between previous treatments but only had significant differences compared with untreated plant. The highest number of fruit/plant was observed when plants were treated with S. marcescens (10.66), then B. amyloliquefaciens (8.66), P. putida (8), P. fluorescens (8) and B. cereus (7.66). No significant differences between the last 4 treatments, but all had significant differences compared with untreated plants. The highest weight of plant yield (g) was observed with S. marcescens (319.6 g/plant) and the lowest weight of plant yield was observed in plants treated with nematode alone (untreated). On the other hand, the lowest numbers of J2/10 g of soil (78), galls/root, (24.33) galls/root, egg masses/root (12.66) and egg/egg masses were observed in the plants treated with S. marcescens.  相似文献

The availability of forage resources during the dry season is often a critical factor in determining the distribution and movement of large herbivores. It has long been suspected that the Kamala tree (Mallotus philippinensis) can serve as an indicator of the distribution for Asian elephants during the dry season in northwestern India. However, there is little direct evidence in support of this speculation, especially at a large landscape scale. Here, we predicted the distribution of Kamala trees in the Shivalik landscape of northwestern India based on topographic and bioclimatic variables, as well as satellite-derived vegetation indices and forest canopy height data using a presence-only ecological niche model. We used the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and true skill statistic (TSS) to validate the model. We then examined the relationship between the occurrence probability of Kamala trees and the presence of Asian elephants with data collected during dry seasons between 2010 and 2014 using logistic regression models. Our results showed that the probability of occurrence of Kamala trees was predicted with good accuracy (AUC = 0.88 and TSS = 0.51). The logistic regression models showed that the presence of Asian elephants can be adequately predicted by the occurrence probability of Kamala trees. This result suggests that the distribution of Kamala trees is a good indicator of the presence of Asian elephants during the dry season in the Shivalik landscape. These findings may have major implications for the conservation of Asian elephants, especially in designing wildlife corridors and mitigating human-elephant conflicts.  相似文献

Road corridors are sources of fire ignition and fire spread in French Mediterranean areas, but little is known about the flammability of vegetation and the probability of fire ignition and spread to neighbouring forests. This study simulated fire propagation in road corridors with the help of a cellular automata (CA). We assessed the relative importance of vegetation type, fuel treatment and the spatial patterning of vegetation on the probability of fire spreading to forests. The cellular automaton simulator was implemented with different types of corridors (30 m × 40 m), on the basis of an extensive field survey of vegetation. We used data from laboratory flammability experiments to determine the probability of ignition and propagation for each of the 20 cm × 20 cm cells of the CA. The probability of a fire reaching the neighbouring forest (PFR) indicated that certain types of road corridors represent a very high risk owing to a combination of highly flammable vegetation and high spatial connectivity. The lowest PFR values correspond to corridors with a decreasing vegetation flammability gradient in the vicinity of the forest. A several meter-wide embankment with low-flammable and/or managed vegetation can substantially reduce PFR. These results suggest that firewise landscaping and local vegetation management can reduce fire risk in road corridors. Each corridor type should be subjected to specific vegetation management to account for flammability, growth pattern and lifetime.  相似文献

The Valdavara-1 cave, located in the westernmost part of the Iberian Peninsula, is an archaeological site that has been excavated since 2007. At least two main sedimentary units have been identified: an upper one, 30 cm-thick, that has yielded many fragments of ceramic characteristic of the Recent Prehistory (with a radiocarbon age of 4.490 ± 40 years BP), and a lower one, 90 cm-thick, separated from the upper one by an erosive discontinuity and late Pleistocene in age (radiocarbon ages between 13.770 ± 70 and 15.120 ± 70 years BP). The small-vertebrate assemblages recovered from the sieving-washing of all the sediment from the excavation campaigns include a total of at least 34 taxa (six amphibians, nine squamate reptiles, five insectivores, two chiropterans and 12 rodents). The materials from this locality constitutes the first mention in northwestern Spain for Microtus (Iberomys) cabrerae and Micromys minutus, currently absent from this area, as well as the first mention in the fossil record for Chioglossa lusitanica, Discoglossus galganoi and Chalcides striatus. In both layers, such small-vertebrate associations suggest a patchy landscape dominated by humid meadows and woodland areas, with the existence of water areas in the vicinity of the cave. The climate shows a more continental pattern during the late Pleistocene, as evidenced by the presence of Microtus arvalis, Sorex minutus and Rana temporaria, and was milder during the Recent Prehistory, with the occurrence of typically Mediterranean taxa such as Crocidura russula, Chioglossa lusitanica, Discoglossus galganoi, Rana iberica, Chalcides striatus and Timon lepidus. The amphibian and squamate associations suggest that the climate change recorded at the Valdavara-1 cave between the latest Pleistocene and Holocene levels may correspond to a difference of 0.8 °C in terms of mean annual temperature, although the difference is 2.8 °C for the mean temperature of the coldest month.  相似文献

Several studies demonstrate how beavers influence waterfowl habitat availability, ultimately improving waterfowl breeding success; however, no current research links beavers to early season nesting activities of Canada geese (Branta canadensis) in northern climates. We examined how beavers facilitate early access to open water for geese at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park (MLPP), Canada. We surveyed 32 active and 39 inactive beaver ponds to examine whether beavers facilitate early access to open water. Open water occurred 10.7 days earlier at active beaver ponds (mean ice-off day = 87.54, s = 13.88) than inactive ponds (mean ice-off day = 98.19, s = 9.07), especially adjacent to main lodge entrances and winter food caches. Snowpack was on average 5.9 cm shallower at active ponds. Prior to availability of open water, Canada geese exhibited intraspecific territoriality over beaver lodges as nest sites and once water was present, preferred island lodges over bank lodges. These findings support other studies that examined island nesting as protection from terrestrial predators and highlight the importance of beavers in creating open water areas earlier in the season.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted with 160 Hisex Brown laying hens to evaluate the effect of different inclusion levels of faba bean (FB) and enzyme supplementation on productive performance and egg quality parameters. The experimental diets consisted of five levels of FB: 0% (control), 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, substituting soybean meal (SBM), and two levels of enzyme supplementation (0 or 250 mg/kg). Each dietary treatment was assigned to four replicate groups and the experiment lasted 22 weeks. A positive relationship (P < 0.05) was found between FB inclusion and body weight (BW) change of hens when compared to those of the control treatment. Enzyme supplementation significantly affected the final hens’ BW. Feed consumption (FC) of hens was statistically increased with increasing FB level up to 50%. Supplementing dietary enzyme mixture at 250 mg/kg led to improvement in FC at all studied ages (P < 0.05). Inclusion of 25% or 50% FB in diets had no adverse effects on feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the higher FB inclusion levels (75% or 100%). Egg weight (EW), egg number (EN) and egg mass (EM) were significantly (P < 0.05) influenced by FB inclusion in diet during the entire experimental periods, except for EN and EM at 20–24 weeks of age. Egg productive parameters were not influenced by enzyme mixture supplementation (P > 0.05). The main effect of FB levels replacing for SBM affected (P < 0.05) yolk and shell percentages, yolk index, yolk to albumen ratio, shell thickness and egg shape index. It can be concluded that FB and enzyme supplementation could be included in hens diet at less than 50% instead of SBM to support egg productive performance, however higher raw FB levels negatively affected egg production indices and quality.  相似文献

A comprehensive study using ecological engineering analysis was conducted on the influence of the hydrology process in the Yellow River Delta. It was found that water and sediment played an important role in the formation and maintenance of the estuarine wetland. Based on hydrological data (1950–2005), meteorological data (1954–2005) and landscape data produced from integrated Landsat TM images of the Yellow River Delta, the relationship among all the above factors has been analyzed. The results indicated that runoff, sediment discharge and the area of the reed marsh wetland, meadow wetland and tidal wetland had evidently decreased from 1986 to 2001. The runoff and sediment discharge into the Yellow River Delta at a rate of 200–300 × 108 m3 and at 5–8 × 108 t, respectively, were probably the most optimal range for maintaining the stable wetland landscape pattern. Regression analysis and principal component analysis showed that there was a strong positive correlation between the area of wetland landscape and runoff, sediment discharge, whereas there was a negative correlation between the area and the temperature, and there was no significant trend with precipitation levels. The water and sediment discharge are the dominant variable factors of the wetland. Human activities also have an important influence on transformation of wetland types as well as wetland degradation. Therefore, with economic development, climate change and sustainable utilization of resources, great attention should be paid to the changes of natural landscape and their causes.  相似文献

Spatial information at the landscape scale is extremely important for conservation planning, especially in the case of long-ranging vertebrates. The biodiversity-rich Anamalai hill ranges in the Western Ghats of southern India hold a viable population for the long-term conservation of the Asian elephant. Through rapid but extensive field surveys we mapped elephant habitat, corridors, vegetation and land-use patterns, estimated the elephant population density and structure, and assessed elephant–human conflict across this landscape. GIS and remote sensing analyses indicate that elephants are distributed among three blocks over a total area of about 4600 km2. Approximately 92% remains contiguous because of four corridors; however, under 4000 km2 of this area may be effectively used by elephants. Nine landscape elements were identified, including five natural vegetation types, of which tropical moist deciduous forest is dominant. Population density assessed through the dung count method using line transects covering 275 km of walk across the effective elephant habitat of the landscape yielded a mean density of 1.1 (95% CI = 0.99–1.2) elephant/km2. Population structure from direct sighting of elephants showed that adult male elephants constitute just 2.9% and adult females 42.3% of the population with the rest being sub-adults (27.4%), juveniles (16%) and calves (11.4%). Sex ratios show an increasing skew toward females from juvenile (1:1.8) to sub-adult (1:2.4) and adult (1:14.7) indicating higher mortality of sub-adult and adult males that is most likely due to historical poaching for ivory. A rapid questionnaire survey and secondary data on elephant–human conflict from forest department records reveals that villages in and around the forest divisions on the eastern side of landscape experience higher levels of elephant–human conflict than those on the western side; this seems to relate to a greater degree of habitat fragmentation and percentage farmers cultivating annual crops in the east. We provide several recommendations that could help maintain population viability and reduce elephant–human conflict of the Anamalai elephant landscape.  相似文献

The development time, immature survivorship, immature size, tertiary sex ratio, pre-oviposition period, fecundity, and preferences of the castor whitefly, Trialeurodes ricini on four host plant species (castor, eggplant, cotton and green bean) were evaluated under laboratory conditions. Development time from egg to adult emergence was the longest on cotton (33.3 days), the shortest on green bean (25.4 days), and intermediate on eggplant (28.5 days) and castor (28.3 days). The survival rate was the highest on castor (92.5%), followed by those on green bean (80.2%) and eggplant (73.8%), and the lowest on cotton (42.6%). The sex ratio was the highest on cotton (♀:♂ = 2.45:1.00), the lowest on eggplant (♀:♂ = 0.75:1.00), and intermediate on castor and green bean (♀:♂ = 1.04:1.00). T. ricini immatures and adults were generally larger when reared on castor and eggplant than on other plants. The net reproduction rate (R0) was 57.656 females per female per generation, the generation time (T) was 35.9 days, the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was 0.1128 eggs per female per day, the gross reproduction rate (GRR) was 108.04 eggs per female per generation, the finite rate of increase (λ) was 1.1194 females per female per day, and the doubling time (DT) was 6.1149 days. In both no-choice and two-choice tests, T. ricini adults preferred castor for feeding and oviposition.  相似文献

A longitudinal survey was conducted to determine the prevalence and loads of gastrointestinal parasites in goats raised by communal farmers of Qaukeni (QA) and Nkosana (NK) communities of Eastern Cape Province of South Africa between June 2007 and April 2008. One hundred and seventy one goats were weighed and had faecal samples collected from their recta in four seasons; cold-dry, hot-dry, hot-wet and the post-rainy seasons. The samples were examined by the modified McMaster technique for nematode egg types. Goats in QA weighed more (P < 0.05) than those in NK in the post-rainy, cold-dry and hot-dry seasons. However, in the hot-wet season, goats in NK had higher (P < 0.05) weights than those in QA. The most frequently detected gastrointestinal eggs were the strongyle egg type (68.4 ± 8.49 in QA and 96.1 ± 12.01 in NK), followed by coccidial oocysts (53.3 ± 8.76 in QA and 68.8 ± 8.00 in NK). The other identified nematodes were Strongyloides and Trichostrongylus egg types. Higher loads (P < 0.05) of strongyle eggs were observed in the hot-wet and post-rainy seasons, whilst the other egg types showed a peak in the hot-wet season. Strongyle egg counts were higher (P < 0.05) in NK compared to QA. The results indicate that strongyles are the major gastrointestinal egg types negatively affecting body weights of goats.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to disentangle the effects of landscape configuration (i.e., fragment area, connectivity, and proximity to a busy highway) on the assembly of annual plant communities at different spatial scales. Our main hypothesis was that larger and more connected fragments would have higher species densities per plot and this may result in differences in turnover and nestedness patterns at the fine spatial scales where plants interact. Specifically, since Mediterranean annuals are known to form strong competitive hierarchies, we expected to find a nested pattern of beta diversity due to sequential species loss. The study area was a fragmented gypsum habitat in central Spain with a semiarid climate where two fragmentation drivers coexist: agricultural practices and a roadway. Larger fragments had higher species densities per plot (20 × 20 m). Nevertheless, we detected no effect on the species assembly at fine spatial scales (30 × 30 cm). However, when the fragment connectivity was high the species that appeared in poor quadrats (30 × 30 cm) comprised a subset of the species in rich quadrats. These results agree well with the establishment of strong competitive hierarchies among annual species. The distance to the highway influenced the identity of the species established in the community (i.e., species composition) at fine spatial scales, but we detected no effect on species turnover, nestedness, or species densities. The main conclusion of our study is that the effects of habitat fragmentation extend beyond the landscape scale and they determine the spatial assembly at fine spatial scales.  相似文献

This study presents long-term fluctuation, within pond distribution and mortality of egg masses in a population of Rana dalmatina reproducing in a permanent semi-natural pond in Romania. The average number of egg masses per year was 410 (SD = 114.56, min.-max. = 265–581). The mean spawning duration (days) was 26.72 (SD = 5.53). The egg mass distribution was not constant during the years. The long-term change in the distribution of egg masses can be related to changes in the reed cover (pond variable) and landscape structure, i.e. the presence of the forest and a pasture between the pond and the forest. There was a reduction in the number of dead egg masses during the study period. We suggest that the maintenance of the connectivity with the forest and the variable amount of reed assure the main aquatic and terrestrial habitats for the agile frogs. This will allow agile frogs to shift breeding habitats in this area according to their ecological needs and find safe terrestrial habitats for summering and wintering.  相似文献

To encourage nest use in breeder poultry flocks, it is important that nest boxes are attractive. Few studies have evaluated factors affecting nest attractiveness to ducks. We assessed the effects of nest box experience (Experiments 1 and 2) and features of nests, including degree of enclosure (Experiments 1 and 2) and the presence of an egg (Experiment 3), on nest site selection by sexually mature Pekin ducks. The hens were tested individually in pens containing different nest box choices. Nest preferences were determined based on the locations of 14 successively laid eggs. Ducks in Experiment 1 were provided with nest box access prior to the onset of lay (20 weeks of age, EXP group, N = 12) or at the time of preference testing (35 weeks of age, DELAYED-EXP group, N = 12). Delaying nest box access by 15 weeks did not significantly affect the proportion of eggs laid in nest boxes rather than on the floor (P = 0.40). Regardless of experience ducks laid more than 66% of their eggs in nest boxes offering a higher degree of enclosure. Ducks in Experiment 2 were reared with either open-top (OP, N = 12) or closed-top (CL, N = 12) boxes. Regardless of rearing condition, ducks preferred boxes with the highest level of enclosure offered. Ducks laid twice the expected proportion (25%) of eggs in CL boxes with curtains (P = 0.0004). CL boxes without curtains were used as predicted by chance, 25% (P = 0.746), while OP boxes with (P = 0.009) and without (P = 0.015) curtains each contained only half the expected number of eggs. Ducks in Experiment 3 were provided with two nest boxes, one of which contained the egg laid the previous day. Each day, the newly laid egg was marked and either placed back in the nest box where it was found (HANDLED, N = 12) or moved into the adjacent nest box (MOVED, N = 12). Ducks in HANDLED and MOVED laid 97.6% and 79.8%, respectively, of their eggs in boxes containing the previous day's egg. While ducks in HANDLED were consistent in their choice throughout the test, those in MOVED developed the preference over time (P = 0.039), suggesting that the preference for laying in a nest containing an egg may be influenced by experience. These results indicate that nest box enclosure and the presence of an egg are important in determining the nesting choices of Pekin ducks. Clove bud (Syzygium aromaticum) extract was added at concentrations of 0, 35, 75, and 115 μg/ml to ovine semen extenders in order to investigate the antioxidant activities of clove bud extract and its effects on semen quality parameters after cryopreservation of ram spermatozoa. The basic extender was composed of Tris, egg yolk, and glycerol. Two other extenders were prepared by substitution of egg yolk with either LDL or egg yolk + SDS. The DPPH inhibition test was employed to assess the antioxidant activity of clove bud extract. Results showed that, compared to vitamin E, clove bud extract had a higher antioxidant activity. Better sperm motility and movement characteristics (P < 0.05) were observed in the semen diluted with medium containing egg yolk + SDS than in that containing egg yolk and LDL. Progressive motility and movement characteristics of the sperm were significantly improved (P < 0.05) by adding 35 and/or 75 μg/ml of clove bud extract to semen extenders. Sperm viability and plasma membrane integrity were also higher (P < 0.05) in the semen exposed to medium containing egg yolk + SDS and 75 μg of clove buds extract after cryopreservation processes. Higher levels of clove bud extract, however, had adverse effects on all the sperm quality parameters and significantly reduced (P < 0.05) the motility, movement parameters, viability, and plasma membrane integrity of ovine sperm. It was concluded that the clove bud extract had an antioxidant potential that makes it useful for addition to semen extenders and that the best results are obtained with a maximum clove bud extract of 75 μg/ml. Moreover, the combination of egg yolk and a detergent was found to improve sperm quality after the cooling and freeze–thawing processes.  相似文献
