Moth monitoring in a coniferous forest in southwestern Korea was carried out for 3 years in order to investigate the effects of winter weather factors on moth survival and emergence in early spring. A total of 686 individuals in 51 species of 4 families were collected during 3 spring sampling periods. The species richness observed for all 3 years was similar, though their abundance was differed. A total of 15 weather variables were analyzed including temperature and precipitation during the 4 months preceding April, and cumulative sums of 5-degree days with base temperatures ranging from 6 to 10 °C. Due to the multicollinearity of dependent variables, we adopted the eigenvectors of major axes from principal component analysis for multiple stepwise regression analysis. The species richness and abundance were significantly related to the first and second axes. Both axes were positively related with precipitation and temperature during the preceding 2 months, as well as the average winter temperature. This indicated that the effects of temperature and precipitation during winter played an important role in moth emergence in early spring, though the weather conditions of each month during winter varied significantly compared to the pattern of adult emergence.  相似文献

Animals show several behavioral strategies to reduce predation risks. Presumably, moonlight avoidance is a strategy used by some nocturnal species to reduce the risk of predation. In bats, some research indicates that foraging activity is negatively correlated with moonlight intensity, a phenomenon better known as lunar phobia. However, the currently available evidence is contradictory because some bat species reduce their activity during nights with more moonlight while the opposite occurs in other species. We quantitatively evaluated the strength and direction of the relationship between moonlight intensity and bat activity using a meta-analysis. We also looked at some ecological correlates of lunar phobia in bats. Specifically, we examined foraging habitat and latitude as potential moderators of the size of the lunar phobia effect. Our results show that, regardless of the method used to evaluate bat activity, the overall relationship between moonlight intensity and bat activity is significant and negative (r = ?0.22). Species foraging on the surface of the water (piscivores and insectivores; r = ?0.83) and forest canopy species (i.e., big frugivores; r = ?0.30) are more affected by moonlight than those with different foraging habitats (understory, subcanopy, open air). Latitude was positively correlated with lunar phobia (r = 0.023). The stronger lunar phobia for bats foraging on the water surface and in the forest canopy may suggest that the risk of predation is greater where moonlight penetrates more easily. The significant effect of latitude as a moderator of lunar phobia suggests that there is a weak geographic pattern, with this phobia slightly more common in tropical bats than in temperate species.  相似文献

Digestive capabilities of nectar-feeding vertebrates to assimilate sugars affect their ability to acquire and store energy and could determine the minimal temperatures at which these animals can survive. Here, we described the sugar digestive capability of Leptonycteris nivalis and related it with its capacity to live in cold environments. We measured the enzymatic activity, food intake rate and changes in body mass of bats feeding at four different sucrose concentrations (from 5 to 35% wt./vol.). Additionally, we used a mathematical model to predict food intake and compared it with the food intake of bats. L. nivalis was able to obtain ~ 111.3 kJ of energy regardless of the sugar concentration of their food. Also, bats gained ~ 2.57 g of mass during the experimental trials and this gain was independent of sugar concentration. The affinity (1 / Km) of sucrase (EC 3.2.1.48) was one order of magnitude higher relative to that reported for its sister species Leptonycteris yerbabuenae (0.250 and 0.0189 mmol? 1 L, respectively), allowing this species to have a higher energy intake rate. We propose that the high ability to acquire energy conferred L. nivalis the faculty to invade cold environments, avoiding in this way the ecological competition with its sympatric species L. yerbabuenae.  相似文献

The northern bat Eptesicus nilssonii is widespread in Fennoscandia, with breeding populations well above the Arctic Circle. I studied this species at its extreme northern limit, at 69°N in Norway. I radio-tracked 17 bats from 2 maternity roosts during 2003–2006 to study the influence of the midnight sun and increasing lengths of darkness on activity (time spent out of roost) and home range size. Activity and home range was highly correlated with night length (light intensity); both increasing progressively with season. Bats were classified into 3 groups based on the time of the season they were tracked (basically July, August and September–October); short activity (average 1.57 h) and small home range (average 0.91 km2), medium activity (3.69 h) and medium-sized home range (4.58 km2), and long activity (4.80 h) and large home range (17.2 km2). Bats visited roosts several times during the night, and the duration of roost visits increased significantly by group. The number of periods out of roost increased from the first to the second group (1.45 vs. 2.36 flight periods per night), but insignificantly to the third group (2.37 flights). The most significant increase in activity and home range was associated with the first flight of juveniles in early August. These bats appeared to have a threshold level of around 1700 lux for activity out of roost, with little difference between light levels at emergence and return (the second group returned in significantly poorer light than they emerged in). Although the northern bat at this extreme latitude had adapted to the ambient light conditions, the bright nights under the midnight sun and the short season strongly reduced their window of opportunity for activity and may possibly reduce survival and reproductive success.  相似文献

We monitored 20 cape foxes (Vulpes chama) to determine the social organization, survival, and dispersal of this species on two sites in South Africa from 2005 to 2008. Cape foxes were socially monogamous and territorial, with annual home ranges of mated pairs (n = 8) overlapping 80% on average, compared to a mean overlap of 3% between foxes in adjacent ranges. At least 2 pairs remained associated for >1 breeding season, and both sexes exhibited strong site fidelity, as home ranges in consecutive years overlapped 58–98%. Members of mated pairs never foraged together, however they used the same or nearby (<100 m apart) day rests 81% of the time when pups were 0–4 months of age, but only 28% of the time during other months of the year. Dispersal was male biased, as all juvenile males (n = 6) dispersed when 9–11.5 months old, whereas 3 of 4 juvenile females remained philopatric as either breeders or non-breeding associates. At least 6 foxes bred as yearlings (3 F, 3 M), indicating cape foxes have high reproductive potential. Two adult females maintained their territories after their mates died, whereas two adult males dispersed soon after their mates died, indicating cape foxes likely have a female-based social organization. Annual survival was 0.64, and predation from larger carnivores, primarily black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas), was responsible for 71% of mortalities. Our results provided empirical support for previous hypotheses regarding the relationship between body size and life-history patterns in Canidae, as several ecological parameters of cape foxes were similar to that of other small (<6 kg) canid species, especially Vulpes species inhabiting arid and semi-arid environments.  相似文献

Mangrove phenology is important in understanding the past, present and future response of mangrove species to impacts of climate change. Our study is the first long term direct observation of the phenology of Rhizophora mucronata and Sonneratia alba in Kenya. Objective of the study was to determine, interpret and document the timing of the various phenoevents and phenophases, and to establish relationships between phenology and the climatic variables. Phenological traits were investigated in six monospecific mangrove stands in Gazi Bay, south of Mombasa, for 2 years. Leaf emergence, leaf fall, flower bud, flower and fruit initiation data were recorded every fortnight in 54 shoots of 9 trees at each site. Continuous leaf emergence and loss characterized by multimodal peaks was observed for the two species. Leaf emergence and leaf fall peaked in the wet months and was reduced in the dry months. There was a relationship between the leaf emergence and drop with the reproductive phenology in the two species. Mean leaf longevity for R. mucronata and S. alba was 12.8 ± 1.2 and 4.9 ± 0.5 months respectively. The reproductive cycle took approximately 16–20 months in R. mucronata and 4–5 months in S. alba. Bud initiation in R. mucronata was seasonal and occurred in October and September. Buds were observed for 8–11 months developing slowly on the shoots. Shifts were observed in the timing of flower initiation, and the flowering period lasted in total for 4–5 months. The time period from flower appearance to the developmental start of immature propagules lasted about 1 month at reforested sites and up to 5 months in stands of natural vegetation. In R. mucronata initiation of immature propagules was not seasonal and varied among the sites. Fruiting in S. alba was short and seasonal without overlap, and shifts were observed in the timing of flowering, flowering and fruiting peaks. Abscission of reproductive parts started in July and in June, respectively, in the years 2005 and 2006. Fruiting was observed starting in August in both years, and fruiting peak was reached in October in 2005 and one month earlier in 2006. In R. mucronata vegetative and reproductive phenophases significantly correlated with climatic variables, whereas in S. alba only leaf emergence and leaf fall correlated with temperature. The flowering plasticity in the reproductive phenology of the two species indicates possible sensitivity to certain climatic and environmental triggers. Our results also indicate that R. mucronata trees have a distinctly higher investment in the reproductive cycle than S. alba.  相似文献

The presence and abundance of particular nematode genera in marine sediments are bioindicators of environmental disturbance. They can even reveal the existence of specific toxicants, such as trace-metals and hydrocarbons derived from fossil fuels. We studied this important infaunal component during a three-year monitoring program in Mexico’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the aftermath of a major oil spill in the northern Gulf of Mexico caused by the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon platform (DWH) in April of 2010. A closer look at the nematode composition and density values throughout and after the DWH oil spill revealed considerable changes. Continental shelf and upper slope sediments sampled in the summer of 2010 included 48 genera and a density of 44.45 ind/10 cm−2. Eight months later in the winter of 2011, there was a critical decrement in genera number (23) and density (25.22 ind/10 cm−2). However, in 2012, the nematode community showed signs of recovery: genus diversity was 58 with a density of 91.45 ind/10 cm−2. Significant differences were recorded between the first and the last sampling periods, driven by a remarkable turn-over in genera composition, and by an increase in density of the genera Sabatieria, Dorylaimopsis, and Cheironchus. Similarly, significant spatial differences between the nematofauna of the inner-middle shelf and the deepest zone (>2000 m) were detected. Correlation analyses confirmed the tolerant behavior of the above genera to Ni and Co, and their proliferation when hydrocarbon compounds presumably derived from the DWH oil spill increased throughout the study. The Maturity Index (MI) estimated for each survey ranged from 2.35 to 2.6. Environmental Quality Status conditions in the summer of 2010 were good while in the winter of 2011 were poor, and moderate towards the winter of 2012. Index of Trophic Diversity (ITD) values for each survey were high: 0.70, 0.68, and 0.74, respectively. A high predominance of feeding guilds 1B and 2B was recorded throughout the study. The estimated Index of Trophic Diversity (ITD) values resulted high (Table 5). These values apparently indicated that the four feeding types were proportionally distributed in the nematode assemblage. This fact was better reflected during the winter of 2012. Nonetheless, these results are not congruent with the high predominance of feeding guilds 1B and 2B observed throughout the study.  相似文献

A three-year survey of kudzu foliage, seed, stems, and roots for associated phytophagous insects was conducted to establish basic information about the insect communities that kudzu harbors in China and to assess the abundance, diversity and damage caused by these insects. Diseases of kudzu were also surveyed in southern China. A total of 116 phytophagous insect species in 31 families and 5 orders were collected from kudzu in China, in six feeding guilds: foliage, sap, stem, terminal, seed and root feeders. The impact of foliage feeders varied from site to site and year to year, and over the course of the growing season. The mean percent defoliation of kudzu over all plots and years was 13.3 ± 1.9%, but ranged as high as 34%. Two insect species fed on shoots and clipped off terminals. Infestation of new shoots was high, with nearly half of all shoots clipped. Nearly half of the vines showed damage from stem borers, again varying through the season. Two species of insects attacked kudzu roots, mainly the cerambycid beetle Paraleprodera diophthalma (Pascoe), which caused considerable damage to both small (young, <3.4 cm diameter) and large (older, >6 cm diameter) roots. Insects also caused substantial seed damage. Imitation rust, caused by Synchytrium minutum [=S. puerariae (P. Henning) Miyabe], was the most commonly observed disease of kudzu. Several of these species have potential as biological control agents for kudzu in the US.  相似文献

Studies on the microbial ecology of gut microbiota in bats are limited and such information is necessary in determining the ecological significance of these hosts. Short-nosed fruit bats (Cynopterus brachyotis brachyotis) are good candidates for microbiota studies given their close association with humans in urban areas. Thus, this study explores the gut microbiota of this species from Peninsular Malaysia by means of biochemical tests and 16S rRNA gene sequences analysis. The estimation of viable bacteria present in the stomach and intestine of C. b. brachyotis ranged from 3.06 × 1010 to 1.36 × 1015 CFU/ml for stomach fluid and 1.92 × 1010 to 6.10 × 1015 CFU/ml for intestinal fluid. A total of 34 isolates from the stomach and intestine of seven C. b. brachyotis were retrieved. A total of 16 species of bacteria from eight genera (Bacillus, Enterobacter, Enterococcus, Escherichia, Klebsiella, Pantoea, Pseudomonas and Serratia) were identified, Enterobacteriaceae being the most prevalent, contributing 12 out of 16 species isolated. Most isolates from the Family Enterobacteriaceae have been reported as pathogens to humans and wildlife. With the possibility of human wildlife transmission, the findings of this study focus on the importance of bats as reservoirs of potential bacterial pathogens.  相似文献

Bats are among the most heterothermic mammals, with nearly all species investigated under free-ranging conditions to date exhibiting some degree of daily torpor and/or hibernation. We investigated thermoregulation during late winter by seven Nycteris thebaica in a warm, semi-arid habitat in northern South Africa, using temperature-sensitive transmitters to measure skin temperature (Tskin). Unexpectedly, we found no evidence for any expression of daily torpor or hibernation based on a total of 86 days of data from 7 bats (one male and six females), despite air temperatures as low as ~10 °C. Instead, daytime Tskin was distributed unimodally with most values in the 33–35 °C range, and a minimum Tskin of 28.4 °C at a roost temperature of 24.6 °C. There are several possible reasons why N. thebaica may avoid torpor, including predation in roosts, and the long nightly foraging periods of this species compared to many others.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the dispersal pattern of airborne fluoride emissions, from a single source in the city of Ouro Preto, Brazil, the fluoride impact on some herbaceous plant species was studied using the plants as passive bioindicators. Foliar fluoride contents of eight species collected at different distances from an aluminium smelter were analyzed. The plant species were: Baccaharis dracunculifolia, Bidens pilosa, Borreria verticillata, Calopogonium mucunoides, Erigeron bonariensis, Hedychium coronarium, Ipomoea purpurea and Ipomoea cairica. In all species the fluoride accumulation decreased exponentially with the distance from the emission source. There was specific and distinct variation in fluoride accumulation among the species, a group of high-accumulator species (B. dracunculifolia and Bidens pilosa) and a group of low-accumulator species (I. cairica, H. coronarium and Borreria verticillata). C. mucunoides and E. bonariensis occupied an intermediate position. There was a pattern of plant contamination response during the periods analyzed. The plants nearest to the emission source, between 0.4 km northwest and 1.1 km east, showed fluoride contamination traits in leaves reaching values between 100 and 500 μg g−1. Moreover, fluoride contents higher than 1000 μg g−1 were found in these plants. At the most distant stations, situated 2.9 km northwest and 6 km east from the factory, the fluoride content of the dry matter was less than 10 μg g−1 showing that plants at those distances were submitted to minimum contamination. There were different patterns of tolerance among the species analyzed. While B. dracunculifolia accumulated fluoride up to 1500 μg g−1 in dry matter without any signs of injury, Borreria verticillata showed severe necrosis in leaves, but the fluoride content found was not higher than 120 μg g−1.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo estimate the extent of changes in mean BLLs from colder to warmer months, in children aged 1–5 years with different status of lead in colder months.MethodologyWe performed a systematic review using an in-house algorithm developed in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and CINHAL. Search was performed between November 2012 and July 2013, and data evaluation and extraction were subsequently conducted. The mean BLLs observed in the warmer months was divided by the one observed in the colder months to obtain the warmer-to-colder ratio (WCR). Study-specific WCRs were pooled using the fixed-effects method of Mantel–Haenszel to estimate the combined WCR.ResultsFrom 4040 papers initially identified, eight cohort studies were considered relevant for inclusion. The combined WCR was inversely related to the BLLs observed during colder months. The values were 1.25 (95% CI: 0.90–1.60), 1.06 (95% CI: 0.92–1.19), and 0.95 (95% CI: 0.51–1.39) for children showing baseline BLLs of <10 μg dL−1, 10–20 μg dL−1and ≥20 μg dL−1, respectively. The combined WCR was influenced neither by children's age nor place/date of study.ConclusionThe extent of the summer increase in BLLs depends on the BLLs in the colder months.  相似文献

High levels of nutrients in fish ponds by fish farming may cause significant eutrophication leading to a loss in species richness and a decrease of cover of aquatic plants to phytoplankton dominance. This shift can be represented by a tipping point where a significant change in the state of the ecosystem is observed such as a change from high to low aquatic plants species richness and cover. A total of 100 fish ponds were studied during five years in the Dombes region, France, to determine tipping points in aquatic plant richness and cover using chlorophyll α (CHL), water transparency, Total N (TN) and Total P (TP) gradients with two statistical methods. The relationships between tipping points, nutrient loads and yearly variations in weather conditions were also evaluated. Looking at the five years data, tipping points were observed in aquatic plant richness at 6 and 60 μg/L for CHL, and at 3.90 mg/L for TN concentration; as well as at 70 cm for water transparency, but no tipping point was found with TP. For aquatic plant cover, tipping points were observed at 11 μg/L for CHL, 2.42 mg/L for TN, 0.05 mg/L for TP, and at 62 cm for water transparency. These tipping points showed a significant decrease of aquatic plant species richness and cover, linked to the nutrient concentrations which drive the competition between the primary producers phytoplankton and aquatic plants. However, tipping points could vary significantly between years. The inter-annual variability may be due to an early occurrence of phytoplankton blooms in some ponds in a year preventing the establishment of aquatic plants, and thus influencing the value of tipping points. Weather conditions influence the competition between primary producers by impacting chlorophyll α and nutrients concentrations. When weather conditions supported increased nutrient concentrations, the development of phytoplankton and aquatic plants was facilitated and tipping points in aquatic plant richness and cover occurred with relatively high values. Thus, a significant decrease of plant cover and richness occurred at higher level of nutrients compared to the other years. In these cases, aquatic plants dominated over phytoplankton for the spring period, and also often during summer. In conclusion, tipping points observed are mainly linked to the competition between aquatic plants and phytoplankton. In shallow and eutrophic systems like fish ponds where nutrients are not a limiting resource, weather conditions act temporarily during spring as the main regulator of this competition.  相似文献

Nectar-feeding bats play an important role in natural communities acting as pollinators; however, the characteristics that affect their food selection are unclear. Here we explore the role that sugar gustatory thresholds and sugar concentration play on sugar selection of Glossophaga soricina and Leptonycteris yerbabuenae. We offered bats paired feeders containing sugar solutions of sucrose (S), glucose (G) or fructose (F) vs. pure water, and sucrose vs. 1:1 equicaloric solutions of glucose–fructose at 5, 15 and 35% (wt./vol.). To see the effect of sweetness on sugar selection, we habituated the bats with a diet containing either sucrose or hexoses and subsequently evaluated sugar preferences. Sugar thresholds were S < G,F for G. soricina and G < S < F for L. yerbabuenae. These thresholds did not match with sugar preferences when the bats fed on dilute nectars. L. yerbabuenae changed its sugar preferences with concentration while G. soricina did not. Finally, the bats consistently preferred the sugar they were habituated to. Our results suggest that bats become accustomed to the sugar found in the most abundant plants they use, and thus prefer the most common sugars included in their diet. This could confer an advantage by allowing them shifting sugar preferences on the most common food present in their environment.  相似文献

Natural habitat of Romanomermis iyengari, an entomophilic mermithid nematode, is rice field. Parasitism of this nematode on mosquito larvae breeding in rice fields in Pondicherry, India, has been studied in 1979. The present study was to find out its persistence in the same habitat, after many years of agricultural practices. Evaluation of parasitism on mosquito larvae was carried out during two rice cultivation seasons at a schedule of 1 week prior, and 1 and 2 weeks after transplantation of paddy. Larval stages of mosquito species such as Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Culex vishnui, Anopheles vagus, and Anopheles subpictus showed parasitism of R. iyengari. Parasitism was the highest on C. tritaeniorhynchus with a maximum of 15.38% during season I and 17.85% during season II. Followed by this, it was on A. vagus (10.82% and 9.43%), C. vishnui (7.37% and 8.69%), and A. subpictus (3.70% and 6.36%). The overall density of mosquito larvae and level of parasitism of R. iyengari on them during season II was significantly higher than that of season I. The parasitism was maximum at 1 week before transplantation and showed a decreasing trend towards 2 weeks after transplantation, during both the seasons. The level of natural parasitism of R. iyengari during the present investigation was higher than that observed in the same ecosystem almost 35 years ago. This is clearly an indication towards the capability of the nematode to withstand several years of agricultural practices, including pesticide and agrichemical application. Hence, if applied at sufficient level and frequency, this nematode could act as a successful biocontrol agent against mosquitoes breeding in rice fields.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to monitor the changes in methanogenic community structures in an anaerobic digester (250 m3 working volume) during start-up including prolonged starvation periods. Redundancy analysis was performed to investigate the correlations between environmental variables and microbial community structures. The anaerobic digester was operated for 591 days at alternating operating temperatures. In initial start-up period at stage I (35 °C), growth of various species of mesophilic aceticlastic methanogens (AMs) and hydrogenotrophic methanogens (HMs) was observed. Methanobacteriales species survived better than other methanogens under long-term starvation conditions. In stage II (50 °C), HMs became dominant over AMs as the operating temperature changed from mesophilic to thermophilic due to increase of ammonia inhibition. In stage III (35 °C), only the Methanomicrobiales population significantly increased during 50 days of HRT while Methanobacteriales dominated over 15 days of HRT. The influent pH negatively correlated with all methanogenic populations especially in stage II.  相似文献

Thermoregulatory behavior in temperate bats is influenced by gender, food availability, ambient temperature and reproduction. Ecologically and morphologically similar bat species (Myotis bechsteinii, M. nattereri, and Plecotus auritus; Vespertilionidae) facing similar diurnal conditions should therefore not differ in their thermoregulatory behavior. Identified day roosts (n = 23) of radio-tagged bats (n = 30) were spread over an area of 33.1 ha, but ambient temperature did not differ between roosting sites. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in cardinal direction, roost height, canopy coverage, and breast height diameter between day roosts used by the three species. Minimum roost temperatures and isolation values, however, differed significantly between our species with lowest values in P. auritus. The range of skin temperatures (min–max) recorded by temperature-sensitive transmitters was not species-specific with the lowest ranges in late pregnancy (mean ± SD: 7.1 ± 1.1 °C) and highest in post-lactation (mean ± SD: 13.1 ± 1.1 °C). The minimum skin temperature, however, was species-specific with the lowest values in P. auritus (mean ± SD: 20.2 ± 1.1 °C), intermediate in M. nattereri (mean ± SD: 23.4 ± 1.0 °C), and the highest in M. bechsteinii (mean ± SD: 26.8 ± 1.0 °C). Species-specific usage of energy-saving mechanisms might represent an important niche differentiation of species. Different mechanisms might allow, e.g. one species to occupy colder roosts with higher temperature variations or to shorten foraging times due to distinct thermoregulatory behavior.  相似文献

Trees can reach ages that in some cases amount to thousands of years. In the Mediterranean region, olive trees (Olea europaea) have traditionally been considered a particularly long-lived species. The main objective of this study was to assess the age of large olive trees considered to be millenarian and classified as monumental trees in northeastern Spain. We extracted cores of 14 individuals and obtained 8 sections of trees which had already been cut in the area where the largest olive trees in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula are found. The age of the sampled olive trees was assessed by counting the number of annual growth rings. Tree rings did not cross-date well, neither within nor between individuals, but boundaries between likely annual rings were clearly distinct. We found a linear relationship between DBH and tree age (in years) (Age = 2.11 × diameter(cm) + 88.93, R2 = 0.80), which was used to estimate the age of unsampled olive trees. The maximum estimated age (627 ± 110 years) is among the greatest ages reported for olive trees around the world (700 years) and among the oldest trees in Mediterranean ecosystems.  相似文献

A randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial of a single dose of 200,000 I.U. of vitamin A with daily zinc supplementation was conducted with children in Mojo village, Surabaya City. Children aged 48 to 60 months were randomized to receive a single dose of 200,000 I.U. of vitamin A plus zinc sulfate (n = 12) or a single dose of 200,000 I.U. of vitamin A (n = 12) plus placebo six days a week for six months. Children were evaluated weekly for nutrient intake and for IGF-1, C-reactive protein levels, gamma globulin levels, serum zinc, serum retinol, bone age and the index height for age at six months. At the end of the study, there was a significant increase in the serum retinol level (p < 0.03), serum zinc level (p < 0.03), IGF-1 hormone (p < 0.04) and Z-score height for age (p < 0.001), bone age (p < 0.01), and gamma globulin level (p < 0.04) and a significant decrease in the amount of infection/inflammation measured by CRP level (p < 0.001). There was also a significant correlation between CRP level and height for age (p < 0.01), and between gamma level and height for age (p < 0.01).These results suggest that combined vitamin A and zinc supplementation reduces the risk of infection and increases linear growth among children, and thus may play a key role in controlling infection and stunted growth for children under five years old.  相似文献

Failure of interspecific androgenesis between brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis, Mitchill 1814) and Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus, L.) has been attributed to the conflict between the egg cytoplasm of one species and the sperm nucleus of the other species. To overcome this incompatibility, sperm derived from the brook charr × Arctic charr hybrid male was used to induce androgenetic development in eggs originating from the parental species as well as their hybrids. The eggs were subjected to 420 Gy of X-radiation to damage the maternal nuclear DNA and inseminated with untreated sperm. Haploid zygotes were exposed to high hydrostatic pressure shock (7000 psi for 4 min), which was applied 420 min after insemination to inhibit the first cell cleavage and recover the diploid state of the zygote. The androgenetic diploid offspring that hatched from the brook charr, the Arctic charr and the hybrids eggs had survival rates of 4.7 ± 0.6%, 1.2 ± 0.4% and 16.8 ± 0.5%, respectively. Drastic mortality among the hatched androgenetic individuals was observed within the first five months of rearing. Cytogenetic analysis of the androgenetic progenies exhibited residues of the irradiated maternal nuclear genome in the form of radiation-induced chromosome fragments in 47% of the specimens that were examined. Interactions between the egg cytoplasm and the sperm nucleus, the low quality of the gametes, the expression of homozygous paternal lethal alleles and the incomplete inactivation of the maternal chromosomes were identified as factors responsible for the large mortality among androgenetic embryos and hatchlings.  相似文献
