Summary Populations of the monocarpic plant Crepis tectorum were grown in a series of uniform environments to test the hypothesis that weedy populations are more r-selected than populations from a more natural habitat. Weedy populations exhibited a combination of r- and K-selected traits. The relatively rapid growth, the potential for a summer annual habit, and the relatively high fecundity that characterized at least one of the two weed populations studied were considered as r-selected traits favored in habitats of unpredictable duration. However, high levels of competition from other weedy species or from the crop in arable fields may explain at least some presumably K-selected traits observed in the weedy populations, e.g. relatively large seeds and late flowering in the summer. Results indicated that stress due to abiotic factors (strong winds, desiccation and nutrient deficiency) has been a more important selective factor than r- or K-selection, in non-weedy populations from calcareous grasslands (alvars) on the Baltic islands.  相似文献

This study determined if a spatial hierarchy existed with respect to reach-scale habitat, subwatershed-scale, and watershed-scale geomorphology and land use stressors on fish assemblages in southeastern U.S. coastal plain streams. During May–October 2009–2012, fishes were sampled by seine, and habitat was assessed at 50 reaches in the Lake Pontchartrain Basin (USA). Using partial redundancy analysis (pRDA) a variance decomposition procedure was used to partial out influences of confounding covariables at each spatial scale. Reach-scale habitat had the strongest association with the assemblage. Stream width, depth, aquatic vegetation and human debris cover, rapid habitat assessment score, and large woody debris volume were the most important variables. At subwatershed and watershed scales, natural and anthropogenic characteristics were important, including elevation, gradient, watershed area, wetland cover, stream density, road, dam and oil/gas well densities. Six species were associated most strongly with the watershed variables, compared to reach- and subwatershed-scale variables. These species had more “r-selected” life-history strategies (e.g., smaller eggs, shorter life spans, multiple broods, longer spawning season, and trophic generalists). In contrast, most species that were associated strongest with reach-scale variables exhibited more “k-selected” life-history traits (e.g., larger eggs, longer life spans, shorter spawning season, single brood, and trophic specialists).  相似文献

The interaction of three species of terrestrial slugs was studied in six field cages containing monocultures and 2-way combinations. A. columbianus and A. ater were non-aggressive species and L. maximus was highly aggressive during the summer. All three species were similar in body design and resource utilization. Reproduction (egg size, eggs/batch, number of batches, wet-weight productivity) and mortality were monitored through the 1977 season. L. maximus drastically reduced reproductive success of the non-aggressive slugs and increased their mortality. There were also significant interactions between the non-aggressive species. Compared to other invertebrates, the life history characteristics of A. columbianus are strongly K-selected and probably evolved through intraspecific exploitative competition in predictable, stable forest habitats. A. ater is best classified as a refuging r-selected species adapted to less predictable, unstable field environments. L. maximus appears to be α-selected and its overall design is suited to density-dependent regulation in fields.  相似文献

Summary The Antarctic copepod Drescheriella glacialis, an inhabitant of sea ice, is the first polar invertebrate metazoan to have been cultured throughout its life cycle. We describe its demographic characteristics on the basis of a laboratory cohort study and correlative field data. When compared to its closest temperate-zone relatives, D. glacialis shows temperature compensation of developmental and reproductive rates. A genuine r-strategist in every respect, it does not fit established trends for Antarctic invertebrates but appears well adapted to the peculiar spatio-temporal variability of the sea ice habitat.  相似文献

Parasites produce from just a few to many eggs of variable size, but our understanding of the factors driving variation in these two life history traits at the intraspecific level is still very fragmentary. This study evaluates the importance of performing multilevel analyses on egg number and egg size, while characterising parasite life history strategies. A total of 120 ovigerous females of Octopicola superba (Copepoda: Octopicolidae) (one sample (n = 30) per season) were characterised with respect to different body dimensions (total length; genital somite length) and measures of reproductive effort (fecundity; mean egg diameter; total reproductive effort; mean egg sac length). While endoparasites are suggested to follow both an r- and K-strategy simultaneously, the evidence found in this and other studies suggests that environmental conditions force ectoparasites into one of the two alternatives. The positive and negative skewness of the distributions of fecundity and mean egg diameter, respectively, suggest that O. superba is mainly a K-strategist (i.e. produces a relatively small number of large, well provisioned eggs). Significant sample differences were recorded concomitantly for all body dimensions and measures of reproductive effort, while a general linear model detected a significant influence of season*parasite total length in both egg number and size. This evidence suggests adaptive phenotypic plasticity in body dimensions and size-mediated changes in egg production. Seasonal changes in partitioning of resources between egg number and size resulted in significant differences in egg sac length but not in total reproductive effort. Evidence for a trade-off between egg number and size was found while controlling for a potential confounding effect of parasite total length. However, this trade-off became apparent only at high fecundity levels, suggesting a state of physiological exhaustion.  相似文献

The Gipsies, a particular ethnic and social group living mostly in the Eastern European countries, have been studied in terms of r- and K-selection. Considering the variables of fertility, birth spacing, mortality, age distribution, and physical parameters, they proved to be more r-selected than the Hungarians. The main factors bringing about these differences on the scale of r- and K-strategy come from both genetic and cultural biases. Resource unpredictability and social uncertainty, important components of the Gipsies' way of life, contribute to their higher fertility and mortality. Other characteristics, such as a female surplus in the birth sex ratio and the good survival capacity of the “premature” Gipsy infants, seem to show genetic influences as “racial” traits. Finally, a particular family arrangement characteristic of Gipsies, the father-absent household, is likely to have influence on their early sexual activity, even promiscuity, and unstable pair bonds. These analyses, that should be completed with further detailed investigations of social factors, may contribute to the understanding and improvement of the Gipsies' living conditions, after their ignorance in the Communist regime.  相似文献

  • 1 Ostracods occurring at two sections of the Upper Rhône River, France, were examined to determine relationships among species traits, habitat utilization, the relationship between species traits and habitat utilization, and trends in species traits and species richness in the context of spatial and temporal variability of habitats. Twenty regularly sampled species were used in this study and fifteen species traits were considered.
  • 2 Throe groups can be distinguished according to their species traits: group 1 has species of mixed sizes with high reproductive rates, short life span, spherical shape, long swimming bristles, low thigmotactism, and high resistance to desiccation; group 2 has medium-sized species with low reproductive rates, long life span, low or no tolerance to desiccation, geometric (trapezoidal, triangular) or streamlined carapace shape, no swimming bristles, and a strong thigmotactism; group 3 has the largest species with parthenogenetic reproduction, medium-sized swimming bristles, and flattened or cylindric carapace shape.
  • 3 Ostracod habitat utilization segregates the superficial and interstitial habitats along a gradient from the main channel to the abandoned arms and to the temporary waters.
  • 4 The co-structure (= relationship) between species traits and habitat utilization indicates that the species use particular habitats with a particular set of species trait modalities. Species with long life spans, late maturity, low fecundity, and low migratory ability are restricted to the interstitial habitats; the epigean species with long life spans, large size, and parental care are more abundant in permanent flowing and standing surface waters; the epigean species with short life spans, high migratory ability, and high tolerance to desiccation are more abundant in temporary ponds.
  • 5 The analyses of the distribution of the species traits in a river habitat templet of spatial and temporal variability emphasized that the main disturbance structuring the Rhône River ostracod assemblage is desiccation.
  • 6 Of the trends predicted for species traits in the framework of the river habitat templet, five (size, body form, attachment, reproductive technique, and mobility) are clearly opposite for ostracods (because the predictions were mainly established for flood-related disturbances) but four (life span, number of reproductive cycles per year, age at first reproduction, and desiccation tolerance) are in agreement.
  • 7 No trends in ostracod species richness in the framework of spatial–temporal habitat variability were evident.

Breeding location choice provides a mechanism by which individuals can directly influence their reproductive success. Location choice should therefore reflect individual condition, habitat features, and the intensity of competition; with these factors then influencing reproductive success. To test whether such patterns were detectable in the wild, we tagged 705 sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in a natural population, and monitored them from when they started breeding until they died. We evaluated the role of individual condition (size, secondary sexual traits, energy stores) in the acquisition of breeding locations that differed in the intensity of competition (female density, sex ratio) and habitat features (water depth, water velocity). We then evaluated the influence of breeding location on reproductive life span and energy stores. At a coarse level (20‐m stream sections), females consistently settled in certain locations, and these locations sustained high densities and held larger females. At a fine scale (0.5‐m breeding sites), (1) larger fish occupied deeper water (males, r2=0.072; females, r2=0.199), (2) higher levels of competition reduced reproductive life span for males (r2=0.139) but not females, and (3) fish with shorter reproductive life spans died with more energy remaining in their muscle tissue (males, r2=0.414; females, r2=0.440). These patterns were nested within a tendency for late breeding fish to have shorter reproductive life spans. Energy stores and secondary sexual traits did not influence breeding location choice, and larger fish did not acquire locations of higher intrinsic quality (i.e., those sections settled first and sustaining higher competition). Our study provides evidence that some aspects of individual condition influence breeding location choice, which then influences components of reproductive success.  相似文献

Summary Coexistence of Callicorixa producta and Arctocorisa carinata in an archipelago of rock pools appears to be facilitated by division of the environment on the time axis. To test this, a hypothesis is built on r-K theory. As A. carinata is twice the size of C. producta it is expected that the former species is more K-selected living in more permanent pools where food resources are limiting and competition strong. The smaller C. producta is expected to prefer newly refilled pools with abundant food, and thus to be more r-selected. Gathered test data on 17 life history and population ecological features agree with the prediction. It is also shown that the both rock-pool corixids are more r-selected than other species of the family.  相似文献

Populations of Drosophila melanogaster were maintained for 36 generations in r- and K-selected environments in order to test the life-history predictions of theories on density-dependent selection. In the r-selection environment, populations were reduced to low densities by density-independent adult mortality, whereas populations in the K-selection environment were maintained at their carrying capacity. Some of the experimental results support the predictions or r- and K-selection theory; relative to the r-selected populations, the K-selected populations evolved an increased larval-to-adult viability, larger body size, and longer development time at high larval densities. Mueller and Ayala (1981) found that K-selected populations also have a higher rate of population growth at high densities. Other predictions of the thoery are contradicted by the lack of differences between the r and K populations in adult longevity and fecundity and a slower rate of development for r-selected individuals at low densities. The differences between selected populations in larval survivorship, larval-to-adult development time, and adult body size are strongly dependent on larval density, and there is a significant interaction between populations and larval density for each trait. This manifests an inadequacy of the theory on r- and K-selection, which does not take into account such interactions between genotypes and environments. We describe mechanisms that may explain the evolution of preadult life-history traits in our experiment and discuss the need for changes in theories of density-dependent selection.  相似文献

The evolutionary theory of senescence predicts that high extrinsic mortality in natural populations should select for accelerated reproductive investment and shortened life span. Here, we test the theory with natural populations of the Daphnia pulex-pulicaria species complex, a group of freshwater zooplankton that spans an environmental gradient of habitat permanence. We document substantial genetic variation in demographic life-history traits among parent and hybrid populations of this complex. Populations from temporary ponds have shorter life spans, earlier and faster increases of intrinsic mortality risk, and earlier and steeper declines in fecundity than populations from permanent lakes. We also examine the age-specific contribution to fitness, measured by reproductive value, and to expected lifetime reproduction; these traits decline faster in populations from temporary ponds. Despite having more rapid senescence, pond Daphnia exhibit faster juvenile growth and higher early fitness, measured as population growth rate (r). Among populations within this species complex we observed negative genetic correlations between r and indices of life-history timing, suggesting trade-offs between early- and late-life performance. Our results cannot be explained by a trade-off between survival and fecundity or by nonevolutionary theories of senescence. Instead, our data are consistent with the evolutionary theory of senescence because the genetic variation in life histories we observed is roughly congruent with the temporal scale of environmental change in the field.  相似文献

  • 1 Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera in two sites of the Upper Rhône River (France) were examined using multivariate analyses to determine: (i) relationships among seventeen species traits; (ii) habitat utilization of the fifty-five species present; (iii) the relationship between species traits and habitat utilization; (iv) trends of species traits and species richness in a framework of spatial and temporal habitat variability.
  • 2 The species traits having the highest correlation ratios correspond to reproduction or life cycle, behavioural, and morphological characteristics. According to their traits, species of Baetidae, Caenidae, and Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera) are opposite species of Perlidae and Perlodidae (Plecoptera).
  • 3 The distribution of species in thirteen habitat types of the Upper Rhône River floodplain demonstrates a transverse gradient from the main channel to the oxbow lakes. Plecoptera are restricted to the different main channel habitats; in contrast, Ephemeroptera families have a broader distribution with Baetidae and Leptophlebiidae occurring in most floodplain habitats.
  • 4 Plecoptera exhibit a significant relationship between species traits and habitat utilization but no relationship is evident for Ephemeroptera. Baetidae use many habitat types and have diverse species traits; in contrast, Leptophlebiidae, Heptageniidae, and Caenidae use many habitat types but each family has a rather uniform set of traits.
  • 5 Trends in species traits were significantly related to both the spatial and temporal variability of habitats. Considering only temporal variability, the distribution of species trait modalities (= categories) corresponded well to predictions on trends in the river habitat templet for ‘minimum age at reproduction’ and ‘potential longevity’, and in general for ‘descendants per reproductive cycle’, ‘reproductive cycles per year’, ‘potential size’, and ‘body flexibility’ trends in six other traits did not match predictions.
  • 6 No trends in species richness were evident in spatial–temporal framework of habitat variability.

Monoclonal antibodies and epifluorescence microscopy were used to determine the depth distribution of two indigenous bacterial populations in the stratified Lake Plußsee and characterize their life strategies. Populations of Comamonas acidovorans PX54 showed a depth distribution with maximum abundances in the oxic epilimnion, whereas Aeromonas hydrophila PU7718 showed a depth distribution with maximum abundances in the anoxic thermocline layer (metalimnion), i.e., in the water layer with the highest microbial activity. Resistance of PX54 to protist grazing and high metabolic versatility and growth rate of PU7718 were the most important life strategy traits for explaining the depth distribution of the two bacterial populations. Maximum abundance of PX54 was 16,000 cells per ml, and maximum abundance of PU7718 was 20,000 cells per ml. Determination of bacterial productivity in dilution cultures with different-size fractions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from lake water indicates that low-molecular-weight (LMW) DOM is less bioreactive than total DOM (TDOM). The abundance and growth rate of PU7718 were highest in the TDOM fractions, whereas those of PX54 were highest in the LMW DOM fraction, demonstrating that PX54 can grow well on the less bioreactive DOM fraction. We estimated that 13 to 24% of the entire bacterial community and 14% of PU7718 were removed by viral lysis, whereas no significant effect of viral lysis on PX54 could be detected. Growth rates of PX54 (0.11 to 0.13 h−1) were higher than those of the entire bacterial community (0.04 to 0.08 h−1) but lower than those of PU7718 (0.26 to 0.31 h−1). In undiluted cultures, the growth rates were significantly lower, pointing to density effects such as resource limitation or antibiosis, and the effects were stronger for PU7718 and the entire bacterial community than for PX54. Life strategy characterizations based on data from literature and this study revealed that the fast-growing and metabolically versatile A. hydrophila PU7718 is an r-strategist or opportunistic population in Lake Plußsee, whereas the grazing-resistant C. acidovorans PX54 is rather a K-strategist or equilibrium population.  相似文献

Terrestrial isopods (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscidea) have adapted to land life by diverse morphological, physiological and behavioral changes. Woodlice species exhibit a large variety in this respect, their preferences ranging from moist to dry habitats. These moisture preference values are related to various morphological adaptations, rendering terrestrial isopods amenable to studying morphological adaptations to terrestrial life. We performed a comparison of four Armadillidium species (Armadillidium zenckeri, Armadillidium nasatum, Armadillidium versicolor, Armadillidium vulgare), by quantifying two morphological traits: the extent of the interfacial endothelium between the respiratory space and the hemolymph within pleopodal lungs and the thickness of tergite cuticle, which are ‘key factors’ in determining protection from desiccation. These values were measured from light micrographs of cross-sectioned lungs. The cosmopolitan A. vulgare, as a habitat generalist, seems to be the most resistant against desiccation and other environmental conditions, while A. zenckeri is the most sensitive one. Light microscopic studies revealed that the four species can be ordered similarly, if we compare them by the extension of the endothelial interface and cuticle thickness, suggesting that these morphological traits are important determinants of their distribution on habitat, microhabitat scales and through the existence of suitable habitats – together with many other factors – the geographical pattern of species occurence.  相似文献

The geographical distribution of sexual and related asexual species has been suggested to correlate with habitat stability; sexual species tend to be in stable habitats (K‐selection), whereas related asexual taxa tend to be in unstable habitats (r‐selection). We test whether this broad‐scale pattern can be re‐created at a microevolutionary scale by experimentally evolving populations of facultatively sexual rotifers under different ecological conditions. Consistent with the pattern in nature, we find that the rate of sex evolves to lower levels in the r‐selected than in K‐selection environments. We consider several different explanations for these results.  相似文献

Subterranean predatory mites are important biological control agents of pests in soil. In order to understand the population characteristics of two predatory mites, Macrocheles glaber Miiller and Stratiolaelaps scimitus Womersley, we studied their development, survival and fecundity data under laboratory conditions using Coboldia fuscipes Meigen as a food source and analyzed them with the age-stage, two-sex life table. Macrocheles glaber had a significantly shorter developmental time, oviposition period, longevity and lower fecundity than those of S. scimitus. The intrinsic rate of increase (λ), finite rate of increase (r), net reproductive rate (C0),net predation rate (C0), and finite predation rate (ω) of M. glaber were significantly lower than those of S. scimitus. Both population parameters and computer simulation implied that S. scimitus is a potential powerful biocontrol agent compared to M. glaber.  相似文献

Understanding the factors responsible for species rarity is crucial for effective species conservation. One possible approach to obtaining information about causes of species rarity is to compare rare and common species. We analyzed the biological and ecological traits of critically endangered (CR) plant species of the Czech Republic. We compared the vegetative, generative and ecological traits of CR species with: i) common closely related species (a form of phylogenetic correction), ii) common closely related species sharing the same habitat (i.e., excluding pairs not sharing the same habitat, because many differences in species traits can be caused by adaptation to a specific habitat type) and iii) all plants of the Czech Republic. Information about species traits was mainly obtained from literature and databases. Comparison with common closely related species showed that CR species are smaller, flower for shorter periods, and have higher proportions of self-compatibility and higher terminal velocities. CR species also differ in their mode of dispersion, and their ecology and distribution. Comparison with species from the same habitat gave similar results. Comparison with the whole flora produced slightly different results, with additional differences in pollination mode and seed mass. The results of all three types of comparison suggest that critically endangered species of the Czech Republic are small, competitively inferior species, with some differences in the generative part of their life cycle, and occur mainly in open, unproductive habitats.  相似文献

  • 1 The purpose of this study was to test predictions of the habitat templet and the patch dynamics concept by analysing the relationship between either the species traits or species richness of amphibians and the spatial–temporal variability of eight habitat types of the Upper Rhône River and its floodplain, France.
  • 2 The information on species traits of the twelve amphibian species was accumulated primarily from the literature; that on habitat utilization was based on field surveys. The information was ‘fuzzy coded’, analysed by ordination techniques, and finally linked to the spatial–temporal variability of habitat types elaborated elsewhere in this issue.
  • 3 After elimination of the variance caused by the differences between urodeles and anurans, correspondence analysis of the matrix of species traits demonstrated that the flexibility of the temporal pattern of reproduction was the major source of variation among amphibian species. A less significant source of variation within anurans was related to traits usually linked to the concept of r–K selection (potential number of descendants per reproductive cycle and ratio of egg size to female size).
  • 4 A correspondence analysis of habitat utilization by amphibian species separated four groups of habitat types, corresponding to different degrees of influence that the active channel had on adjacent waters in the floodplain (i.e. from habitats that are most frequently disturbed by floods, to habitats of braided sections, old oxbow lakes, and the more terrestrialized habitats).
  • 5 A co-inertia analysis of the relationship between species traits and habitat utilization separated two habitat types (terrestrialized former meanders and oxbow lakes) from the others. Species of terrestrialized habitats had a reproductive display, a low number of descendants per reproductive cycle, and a high ratio of egg size to female size. Species of oxbow lakes were early or synchronous breeders, and laid a single clutch.
  • 6 Neither the predictions of the habitat templet concept nor those of the patch dynamics concept were validated. Species traits were not significantly correlated to the axes of the spatial–temporal variability templet. The highest species richness was observed in habitat types with the highest temporal variability; in addition, richness did not peak at highest spatial variability.
  • 7 Deviation from the predictions of the river habitat templet could be explained by: (i) the over-simplification of this model with regard to the evolution of the complex life cycles of the amphibians; and (ii) an underestimation of the importance of phylogenetic constraints and the evolution of community interactions.

Aim We investigated the roles of lithology and climate in constraining the ranges of four co‐distributed species of Iberian saline‐habitat specialist water beetles (Ochthebius glaber, Ochthebius notabilis, Enochrus falcarius and Nebrioporus baeticus) across the late Quaternary and in shaping their geographical genetic structure. The aim was to improve our understanding of the effects of past climate changes on the biota of arid Mediterranean environments and of the relative importance of history and landscape on phylogeographical patterns. Location Iberian Peninsula, Mediterranean. Methods We combined species distribution modelling (SDM) and comparative phylogeography. We used a multi‐model inference and model‐averaging approach both for assessment of range determinants (climate and lithology) and for provision of spatially explicit estimates of the species current and Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) potential ranges. Potential LGM distributions were then contrasted with the phylogeographical and population expansion patterns as assessed using mitochondrial DNA sequence data. We also evaluated the relative importance of geographical distance, habitat resistance and historical isolation for genetic structure in a causal modelling framework. Results Lithology poses a strong constraint on the distribution of Iberian saline‐habitat specialist water beetles, with a variable, but generally moderate, additional influence by climate. The degree to which potential LGM distributions were reduced and fragmented decreased with increasing importance of lithology. These SDM‐based suitability predictions were mostly congruent with phylogeographical and population genetic patterns across the study species, with stronger geographical structure in the genetic diversity of the more temperature‐sensitive species (O. glaber and E. falcarius). Furthermore, while historical isolation was the only factor explaining genetic structure in the more temperature‐sensitive species, lithology‐controlled landscape configuration also played an important role for those species with more lithology‐determined ranges (O. notabilis and N. baeticus). Main conclusions Our data show that lithology is an important constraint on the distribution and range dynamics of endemic Iberian saline‐habitat water beetles, in interaction with climate and long‐term climate change, and overrides the latter in importance for some species. Hence, geological landscape structure and long‐term history may codetermine the overall range and the distribution of genetic lineages in endemic species with specialized edaphic requirements.  相似文献

Soft corals show a wide variety of reproductive strategies, including both asexual and sexual reproduction which can influence macro-evolutionary processes. The octocoral Carijoa riisei has an ample geographical distribution in Pacific and southern Atlantic and also in Caribbean region. This species was considered invasive in Hawaii, and its capacity for rapid proliferation is recognized, but recent studies, however, have indicated that it appears to be native to the Indo-Pacific region. The present study examined the reproductive biology of C. riisei in the Atlantic basin. The results were then compared to previous studies of the same species from the Pacific (Hawaii) and Caribbean (Puerto Rico) regions to examine the hypothesis that the reproductive patterns of C. riisei populations are the same throughout its geographical distribution, independent of its native or non-native status. Samples were collected on a monthly basis from May/2007 to April/2008 at Porto de Galinhas (Pernambuco State, Brazil). This species was found to have similar reproduction patterns in Brazil, the Caribbean, and in Hawaii (a gonochoric reproductive pattern and continuous and asynchronous gamete release). The similarities of their traits contribute to its rapid proliferation and occupation of spaces left by other species, independent of its native or non-native status.  相似文献
