The influence of high temperatures (dry heat and hot water) on germination of seven Mediterranean Leguminosae species typical of fire-prone ecosystems in southern Spain is analyzed, in order to know the response of seeds to wildfires and the possible implications in their regeneration after this disturbance. Seeds were heated to a range of temperatures (50 °–150 °C) and exposure times (1–60 min) similar to those registered in the upper soil layers during wildfires. Germination tests were carried out in plastic Petri dishes over 60 days. In general, the degree of seed germination promotion by dry heat treatments showed a wide interspecific variation, although the final germination level was increased in all the studied species except for Scorpiurus muricatus. The thermal pretreatment of 50 °C, however, was not effective for germination in any species, and rising the temperature to 70 °C only slightly enhanced the germination in Cytisus patens. The preheatings of 90 °C (5 and 10 min), 120 °C (5 and 10 min), and 150 °C (1 min) were the most effective in promoting seed germination. Hot water (100 °C) scarification also increased the final germination level in all cases, with the exception of C. patens. The germination rates after preheating were much lower than in mechanically scarified seeds and closely resembled those of the untreated seeds, except for C. reverchonii, whose seed germination rate decreased with heat. The response of species to heat shock had no clear relationship with life trait or with the specific post-fire regeneration strategy (obligate seeder or facultative resprouter). Those species coexisting in the same habitats had different heat optimal requirements for seed germination, an strategy suggested by some authors as minimizing interspecific competition in the secondary succession started after fire. 相似文献

种子内的寄生昆虫可以严重影响种子的发育、损害种子活力.种子足余策略理论认为大种子有利于抵御和适应昆虫寄生取食,但动物最优觅食理论推测,大种子更易遭受昆虫寄生.为对这两种对立观点进行验证,本实验以青冈、苦槠和麻栎各2个种群的种子为材料,对昆虫寄生与完好种子间的体积和萌发率进行比较,并对寄生种子萌发率与种子体积的关系进行了分析.结果显示:(1)在6个种群的种子中,只有松阳麻栎和青冈种群的寄生种子体积大于完好种子,其余4个种群的寄生种子体积小于完好种子,但这种差异不显著;(2)所有寄生种子的整体萌发率(18%)显著低于完好种子(45.66%)(P<0.001),在不同种群内,寄生种子的萌发率也分别显著低于完好种子.(3)比较同种植物体积差异显著的寄生种子的萌发率发现,大种子总比小种子具有更高的萌发率,但差异不显著;在不同植物的寄生种子间比较时,体积最大的麻栎种子萌发率显著高于体积较小的青冈和苦槠种子.研究结果表明,象虫在种子上产卵时对大种子没有选择偏好,在昆虫寄生取食严重损害种子活力的压力下,大种子比小种子具有更强的耐受力. 相似文献

It has been known for a few decades that European rabbits consume seeds and fleshy fruits of native woody plants, but relevant factors in the endozoochory processes such as seed predation (chewing and digestion), sexual differentiation, or the temporal pattern of seed recovery have been little evaluated until now. In this study, we examined seed dispersal of three Mediterranean shrub species by wild rabbits through monitoring of seed retrieval and germination after gut passage. Twelve adult wild rabbits ( Oryctolagus cuniculus; six males and six females) of similar size and age were fed seeds of three shrub species with fleshy fruits ( Crataegus monogyna, Myrtus communis and Pistacia lentiscus). After ingestion of fruits, seeds were retrieved from dung every 12 h for a day and a half. The viability and germination of retrieved seeds were tested along with that of uneaten seeds. Between 5% and 76% of ingested seeds were retrieved from dung, with significant differences between species and sex. Most M. communis seeds were retrieved with 12–24 h after ingestion; almost all C. monogyna seeds were recovered with 0–12 h after ingestion; no seeds of P. lentiscus were recovered. Only in the case of M. communis seed was the recovery rate greater in female than in male. Passage through the rabbit gut significantly increased seed germination in M. communis, and decreased it in C. monogyna. In conclusion, wild rabbits acted in this study as predators of C. monogyna and P. lentiscus seeds and potential dispersers of M. communis seeds. 相似文献

Effects of avian gut-passage on seed germination are important to assess the effectiveness of frugivores in woodland regeneration,
particularly in biodiversity hotspots that have a high incidence of avian frugivory. We examined the effect of avian gut-passage
on seed germination in contrast to seeds that remain uneaten in five shrub species in Mediterranean central Chile and sought
to determine the physiological mechanism(s) by which seed germinability is modified. Germination assays were conducted in
a glasshouse for five common shrub species of the sub-Andean matorral: Azara dentata (Flacourtiaceae), Schinus polygamus and Schinus molle (Anacardiaceae), Cestrum parqui (Solanaceae), and Maytenus boaria (Celastraceae). We estimated germinability (final percent germination), dormancy length (time from sowing to first germination),
mean length of dormancy of all germinated seeds, and contrasted germination rates of defecated versus manually extracted and
pulp-enclosed seeds. Avian gut-passage increased seed germinability in four of the five shrub species studied—primarily through
deinhibition via pulp removal. Minimum dormancy length was not modified by avian gut-passage for A. dentata, but was significantly shorter for S. molle and C. parqui. Mean dormancy length was significantly shorter in gut-passed seeds of A. dentata, S. molle and M. boaria. Avian gut-passage greatly enhanced the seed germination rates of three species, A. dentata, S. molle and C. parqui. We conclude that the positive effects of birds on seed germination facilitate the regeneration of sub-Andean shrublands,
and that bird declines due to landscape change may impair recovery rates of successional or restored areas due to dispersal

Inter-comparisons in the gas exchange patterns and root characteristics under both well-watered and drought conditions were done in three-years-old seedlings of three oak species ( Quercus cerris L., Q. frainetto Ten., and Q. ilex L.) growing in controlled environment. Well-watered Q. cerris had greater physiological performances than other oaks, but under drought it was not able to face the water stress showing also structural modifications such as reduction of root length and average diameter. On the other hand, Q. ilex maintained root growth both in drought or well-watered soils. Moreover, it was able to keep open stomata also under water stress, although stomatal conductance ( g s) was low. Q. frainetto had an intermediate position in regard to its physiological and root structural characteristics between Q. cerris and Q. ilex under drought stress. For all oaks the relationship between g s and the ratio of sub-stomatal and ambient CO 2 concentration ( C i/ C a) highlighted the dynamic adaptation of g s to the increase of hydraulic resistances of leaf, stem, and roots portions, more evident during the air humidity change and progressive soil dehydration. This suggests a well-triggered above-and under-ground mechanism to endure the drought stress. 相似文献

Post-fire conditions are characterized by enhanced light and the availability of nitrogenous compounds in the soil. It is not known, however, to what extent light or nitrogenous compounds control the germination response of species growing in burned areas and, in particular, whether functional groups of plants differ in their response. The germination response to light and nitrate was tested for 53 species representative of the flora of a Mediterranean recently burned area in Central-Eastern Spain. Differences in germination among species, with and without taking into account their phylogeny, were studied by classifying them according to their life-form (chamaephytes, hemicryptophytes), regeneration strategy (non-sprouters, sprouters) and geographical distribution range (Iberian Peninsula endemics, Mediterranean, widely distributed species). The overall germination mean was not affected by any of the two treatments. There were statistically significant interactions between species and the two treatments. That is, not all species were equally affected, and about 30% of the species were significantly affected by light (half of them positively and the other half negatively) and 25% by nitrate (most of them positively). Species response was related to functional groups. Light response (stimulation vs. non-stimulation) was associated to life-form, regeneration strategy and distribution range. Hemicryptophytes, sprouters and widely distributed species were positively affected by light. No evidence of such an association for nitrate was found. No statistically significant effects of light and nitrate on the mean germination of the various groups (life-form, regeneration strategy, distribution range) were found. Moreover, significant interactions emerged between light and nitrate for all three groups. In summary, the studied set of plants appears to be non-dependent on factors that may change with fire, such as increased light and soil nitrate, for germination. Nonetheless, some species and groups will be affected by such changes. That means that fire will modify the relative balance of germination among species and functional groups. Due to the particular sensitivity of Iberian Peninsula endemics to light, a factor that significantly changes with fire, these species may be at risk under the current fire regime. 相似文献

Capsule Differences in Cork Oak Quercus suber and Holm Oak Quercus rotundifolia dominance had little influence on bird communities though bark-gleaners showed a foraging preference for Cork Oak. Aims Examine the use of Cork and Holm Oak trees by insectivorous birds in Mediterranean oak woodlands. Methods Point-counts were used to compare species abundance among Cork Oak-dominated, Holm Oak-dominated and mixed woodlands. Focal foraging observations were used to evaluate the use of Cork and Holm Oaks in the three habitats and to relate tree characteristics with the foraging time of foliage- and bark-gleaners. Results Bird densities in the three habitats were not different for most foliage- and bark-gleaners. Tree preference index values and foraging time per tree showed no significant differences between tree species and foraging guilds, however bark-gleaners had positive index values for Cork Oak in the three habitats. The foraging time of foliage- and bark-gleaners on both tree species showed a positive relationship with characteristics associated with arthropod abundance. Conclusion Cork and Holm Oak trees are equally preferred by foliage-gleaners but bark-gleaners moderately preferred Cork Oak. Characteristics regarding morphology, phenology and physiological condition of trees can be used to predict habitat quality for insectivorous forest birds in Mediterranean oak woodlands. 相似文献

The water relations and responses of two evergreen ( Quercus ilex L. and Q. suber L.) and two deciduous ( S. afares Pomel. and Q. faginea Will.) Quercus species were studied under experimental conditions. Two-year old seedlings grown in 30 l. pots were subjected to a drying period during which stomatal conductance, pre-dawn potential and minimum foliar potential were measured.The results shows that, for all species, the daily course of stomatal conductance agrees with the patterns proposed by Hinckley et al. (1978 & 1983). Concurrent with the species responses to short-term variation in water availability, it was found that pre-dawn leaf water potential controlled the maximum daily leaf conductance. There was a strong correlation between pre-dawn leaf potential and maximum daily conductance as described by the reciprocal function g srmax for=(-0.47+2.61. p) -1 the evergreen oaks and g srmax for=(-1.94+7.39. p) -1 for the deciduous species. These differences between the two groups may partialy explain their geograhic distributions, and suggest general questions concerning the mechanisms which optimize water-use efficiency in Mediterranean oak species. 相似文献

In arid zones, precipitation distribution is extremely uneven, with saline‐waterlogging and dry–moist cycles appearing frequently, which negatively impact on seed germination and seedling establishment. The responses of two halophytes, Suaeda physophora and Haloxylon ammodendron, and a xerophyte, Haloxylon persicum, to saline‐waterlogging and dry–moist cycles were studied. The results showed that aeration increased seed germination for all species when seeds were submerged in NaCl, especially for xerophyte. Compared with S. physophora and H. ammodendron, seed germination, recovery germination, and total germination of H. persicum were much lower when seeds were submerged in 700 mm NaCl, especially for the recovery germination and total germination of nongerminated seeds when the seeds were desiccated and then transferred to distilled water. However, when the seeds were submerged in 700 mm NaCl with aeration, the seed germination, recovery germination, and total germination of nongerminated seeds transferred to distilled water increased dramatically for H. persicum. No adverse effect of desiccation was found on those values of nongerminated seeds pretreated in NaCl with or without aeration for the two halophytes. In conclusion, seeds of the two halophytes were more tolerant to waterlogging and dry–moist cycles than seeds of the xerophyte during emergence under saline conditions; these traits may be important for halophytes to survive extreme saline environments during the seed germination stage. 相似文献

The potential for improving the performance of seedlings of woody species under flood stress was evaluated. Seedlings of baldcypress ( Taxodium distichum), nuttall oak ( Quercus nuttallii), and swamp chestnut oak ( Quercus michauxii) were subjected to a two-phase study in which soil moisture regime was controlled. During Phase I, plants were randomly assigned to either: Control, well-watered and drained conditions; or intermittent flooding, alternating flooding and drained conditions. Following completion of Phase I, seedlings in each treatment were assigned randomly to one of two treatments: well-watered but drained or continuously flooded. Thus during Phase II, plants were divided into four groups: Control (A), intermittent flooding during Phase I and draining during Phase II (B), control during Phase I and continuously flooding during Phase II (C), and intermittently flooded during Phase I and continuously flooded during Phase II (D). Stomatal conductance (gw) in baldcypress increased in flooded treatments ranging from 112 to 128 percnt; of controls. Net photosynthesis (Pn) in baldcypress was not significantly affected by flooding while in oaks, Pn and gw decreased significantly in response to flooding. In oaks, flood pre-conditioning did not affect growth or physiological responses during phase II significantly. However, stomatal conductance of flood-hardened baldcypress was increased compared to seedlings that were not hardened. The study species developed significantly higher root porosity under flooded conditions compared to controls. Flood pre-conditioning did not appear to increase root porosity although it may have accelerated the process. 相似文献

Summary The systemic insecticides Acephate, Chlorpyrifos, and Oxamyl were variously toxic to Pinus halepensis seeds and seedlings. When applied directly to seeds. Oxyamyl completely suppressed germination; Acetate and Chlorpyrifos greatly inhibited germination. The insecticides either prevented emergence or inhibited elongation of cotyledons and radicals. The insecticides were toxic to young Pinus halepensis seedlings whether applied to the soil or as shoot dips. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are continuously produced by the metabolically active cells of seeds, and apparently play important roles in biological processes such as germination and dormancy. Germination and ROS accumulation appear to be linked, and seed germination success may be closely associated with internal ROS contents and the activities of ROS-scavenging systems. Although ROS were long considered hazardous molecules, their functions as cell signaling compounds are now well established and widely studied in plants. In seeds, ROS have important roles in endosperm weakening, the mobilization of seed reserves, protection against pathogens, and programmed cell death. ROS may also function as messengers or transmitters of environmental cues during seed germination. Little is currently known, however, about ROS biochemistry or their functions or the signaling pathways during these processes, which are to be considered in the present review. 相似文献

Summary Seedlings of Ecalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden were found to be more resistant to waterlogging than those of Eucalyptus robusta Sm. and seedlings of both species were more resistant than those of Eucalyptus saligna Sm. Resistance depended on the stress avoidance mechanism of adventitious root formation. The ethylene-releasing growth substance 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (ethephon) applied to non-flooded plants was used as a tool to study the role of ethylene in the response of plants to waterlogging. Plant height and total dry weight decreased linearly with plant ethylene content. There was no difference between the species in their response to ethephon. 相似文献

We studied the germination responses of Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, Juncus acutus and Schoenus nigricans to saline stress caused by different salt types. The germination percentage and mean time to germination data were obtained by incubating seeds for 30 d in 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5% saline solutions of NaCl, MgCl 2, MgSO 4 and Na 2SO 4 at 30/20 °C and with a 12 h photoperiod. A. macrostachyum was the most tolerant species to salinity during the germination (65% in 2% NaCl). S. nigricans showed the lowest germination (none germinated in salt and only 26% in distilled water). J. acutus showed intermediate behaviour between the two above species, its germination being inhibited by high salt concentrations. The sulphates had less inhibitory effect than the equivalent chloride concentrations. 相似文献

Effects of osmotic tension, salinity and alkalinity were studied on seed germination of three grasses of Karnal-Kurukshetra region with a view to evaluating their capacity to establish through seeds in saline and alkaline environments. Experiments were conducted under controlled conditions in petri dishes lined with blotting papers that were wetted with non-ionic osmotic solutions of mannitol (–2.5 to –15 bars); salinized solutions of NaCl, Na 2SO 4, MgCl 2 and CaSO 4 (Electrical conductivity, EC, ranging from 4 to 16 dS/m), alkaline solutions of Na 2CO 3 (pH 9 to 10) and also in dishes filled with alkali soil grades of the same pH range. Seed germination of all the three grasses was observed to be delayed and finally suppressed by the stress conditions, magnitude of reduction being related to the kind and level of stress as well as to the species. While Sorghum halepense showed a strikingly superior stress-resistance, Panicum miliare did not appear to be suited to establishment through seeds. Ephemeral wetland vegetation (EWV) in the Mediterranean Basin appears in temporary wetlands where favourable hydrological conditions exist only for a short time and year-to-year variability is high. Here, we report results of the seed germination, dormancy and desiccation tolerance of eight annual species living in this vulnerable habitat. Experiments were performed in laboratory conditions under constant and alternating temperatures and using a 12-h daily photoperiod or continuous darkness. Whilst germination and dormancy differed between the species, seeds demonstrated an absolute light requirement and prefer cool temperatures to germinate (mean ≤15 °C). Logistic regression analysis showed significant effects of alternating temperature in all the species except in Tillaea vaillantii whose germination was stimulated by constant temperature. Mean temperature was a significant term in the logistic models for the dormant species Cicendia filiformis, Linum radiola and T. vaillantii for which after-ripening was an effective dormancy-breaking treatment. From these results we infer three strategies of regeneration by seeds: (1) species germinating during the whole vegetative season (2) species germinating in a narrow temperature niche and (3) species requiring flooding ( T. vaillantii). Seeds possessed orthodox storage behaviour (tolerating drying to 15 % relative humidity) and may be amenable to seed banking as a means of ex-situ conservation. We conclude that EWV species are adapted to the irregular presence of water with characteristics that are typical of neither truly aquatic nor wetland plants. These EWV species showed a more plastic germination response based on alternating and constant temperature sensitivity and a low proportion of dormant seeds. 相似文献

Seed dispersal by invertebrates is mostly external (e.g. by ants). However, internal dispersal (endozoochory) seems to be
uncommon due to size limitations. Slugs are generalist herbivores and increasing evidence suggests that they often disperse
seeds. Nevertheless, we know very little on the consequences for plant recruitment. Here, we assess the effect of slug seed
passage on germination and early seedling establishment of a set of nine common plant species with limited dispersal capabilities
(unassisted or ant dispersed). Germination trials were performed under natural conditions (NW of Spain). Size was a clear
limitation for seed ingestion: smaller seeds were eaten more readily, whereas only the largest slugs could swallow the largest
seeds. All ingested seeds were voided undamaged. Only not-ingested seeds (the biggest) were damaged, with chewing marks in
the surface and 0.8% ( N = 250) were broken. In some cases, slugs ate the elaiosomes but discarded the seeds. Slug seed passage had an overall positive
effect on total germination and sped it up in two species. Elaiosome removal by slugs had also a positive effect in Ulex europaeus seeds (+160%). However, slugs had no effect on early seedling survival and growth of the study species. Our results show
that slugs are effective dispersers in terms of seed treatment in the digestive track. However, according to their reduced
movement range (in the range of tens of metres; as shown by other studies), they can only provide rather limited dispersal
as compared to vertebrate dispersers. This can be nonetheless significant for species with limited dispersal, e.g. unassisted
and ant-dispersed plants, for which they act as non-standard dispersers. 相似文献

不同贮藏条件下,探讨了河西走廊枸杞(Lycium barbarum)、黑果枸杞(L.rutheni-cum)、花棒(Hedysarum scorpaium)和泡果白刺(Nitraria sphaerocarpa)4种旱生灌木种子萌发情况。结果表明:枸杞、黑果枸杞和花棒种子萌发对贮藏条件有一致性的响应,即经过低温湿润(-5℃和4℃)贮藏后有较高的萌发率、较快的萌发速度和较早的萌发开始时间,贮藏条件对泡果白刺的种子萌发(<30%)的影响较小;冬季冷屋贮藏后(-5℃,湿润)的枸杞种子萌发率(68%)显著大于冰箱贮藏(4℃,湿润)和室温干燥贮藏(<20%);冰箱和冬季冷屋贮藏后黑果枸杞种子萌发率约80%,室温干燥贮藏后萌发率仅为5%;冰箱和冬季冷屋贮藏后的花棒种子萌发率达到88%和65%,干燥贮藏后为40%。低温层积(-5℃和4℃)是打破枸杞、花棒和黑果枸杞种子休眠的有效方法之一。 相似文献
