The sexual dimorphism in second metacarpal bone growth was investigated in 710 malnourished Guatemalan children one to seven years old to determine if the sex differences seen are only the result of differences in stature and weight. The study sample was mixed-longitudinal and consisted of 1,586 annual examinations. Boys have greater mean stature, weight, periosteal diameter, medullary diameter and cortical area than girls the same age, while girls have greater age specific mean cortical thickness and percent cortical area than boys. When the effects of stature, weight and age are removed boys still have significantly larger periosteal and medullary diameters and less cortical thickness and percent cortical area than girls. These differences between boys and girls therefore cannot be explained by sex differences in body size. However, no sex differences in cortical area remain after accounting for differences in stature, weight and age.  相似文献

The amount of radiographically detectable cortical bone, as determined by measurements of the second metacarpal, was evaluated in 42 male and 45 female Guamanian Chamorros and compared with the degree of bony demineralization in U.S. Caucasians participating in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging of the Gerontology Research Center. All Chamorros were individually matched to the Caucasian participants for age, sex, and menopause status. Chamorros of both sexes showed bilateral asymmetry in bone measurements and in the amount of cortical bone. Both Chamorro and Caucasian males had longer second metacarpals and more cortical bone than females. Caucasian males, however, had longer and larger second metacarpals than Chamorro males. Despite differences in the length and total width, Chamorro and Caucasian participants generally showed no significant differences in the amount of cortical bone or percent cortical area in the second metacarpal, suggesting that larger bones may not always indicate greater cortical mass. Although cross-sectional data suggested apparent age differences in the onset and rate of bone loss between Chamorros and Caucasians, the numbers of participants were too small to allow meaningful age-by-age statistical comparisons.  相似文献

Heritability of skeletal maturity and bone growth is discussed on the basis of intrapair resemblances (correlation coefficients) and differences (revised percent deviations) in mono- and dizygotic twins and random pairs of unrelated children. A series of 1072 radiographs of the right hand and wrist in 63 male and 70 female pairs of monozygotic twins, and 25 male and 21 female pairs of dizygotic twins aged 12 to 18 years studied longitudinally in Tokyo were used. Skeletal maturity based on the TW2 age suggests higher heritability than bone growth based on the second metacarpal dimensions. In the latter, length has higher heritability than width and cortical thickness. A dosage effect seems to be suggested in width and some indices in the second metacarpal, but is not confirmed in skeletal maturation.  相似文献

Bone mass, as assessed by measurements of total subperiosteal diameter and medullary width of the second metacarpal bone on hand-wrist radiographs, was evaluated for 31 Guamanian patients (15 males, 16 females) with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), 67 patients (39 males, 28 females) with parkinsonism-dementia (PD), and 66 (34 males, 32 females) nonaffected Guamanian controls. Comparisons between the two disease groups and between each disease group and the nonaffected controls were made taking into account the sex, age, and disability status of each participant. At all ages, ALS patients of both sexes had significantly lower percent cortical areas (PCA) than did nonaffected controls. The ALS males also had significantly lower PCA than PD males, although no significant differences were observed between female ALS and PD patients. The PD patients of either sex had a lower PCA when compared to controls, but the differences were not statistically significant. The observed differences in PCA were due solely to increased medullary width, suggesting that the diminished cortical bone thickness resulted from greater bone resorption rather than differential bone growth. Longitudinal studies support the cross-sectional findings of accelerated bone loss among ALS patients. It is not possible to determine from the present data whether the observed differences in PCA of the second metacarpal of the ALS patients are due to atrophy of the first interosseous muscle, to a generalized resorption process inherently associated with the development and progression of ALS, or to factors not accounted for by the present analysis.  相似文献

On the basis of 552 boys and 542 girls aged 6 to 20 years, this study examines the estimation of stature from dimensions and maturity of second metacarpals by means of linear regression equations. A combination of length and width measurements provided a more accurate estimation than each measurement individually. When taken alone, length produced a more accurate estimation than width. Sex and age factors are useful for the estimation of stature, though these variables are often unknown in the isolated bone. The samples are divided into immature and mature groups (according to skeletal maturity). Regardless of sex, stature could be estimated from the metacarpal length and width with a standard error of 4.19 cm by means of a multiple linear equation in the immature group. The mature group should be considered with adults for this purpose. Thus, taking into account their skeletal maturity, living stature could be practically estimated from the second metacarpal with significant degrees of accuracy in children.  相似文献

Children of both sexes with mild mental retardation show delays in skeletal maturation and cortical bone growth, but boys in general are more affected than girls. Skeletal age for both sexes is below normal in the younger age groups, but approaches normality at adolescence. None of the measures of IQ is significantly correlated with any of the regional measures of skeletal age in the hand-wrist. The approach toward normality of skeletal development in this population at adolescence is reflected in their normal time of first appearance of the adductor sesamoid. Anomalies of the hand-wrist reflect irregularities in comparing normal and low-IQ children. Only brachymesophalangy V displays significantly higher frequencies in the low-IQ groups. Due to the cross-sectional nature of the study and the different methods of classifying anomalies, little can be said about the other comparisons. Growth in cortical bone reflects a consistent trend for both the humerus and second metacarpal. While measures of total diameter and total cross-sectional area do appear to be below normal standards, the measures of the marrow do not. This finding accounts for a decreased cortical bone thickness and cross-sectional area in the low-IQ sample. All measures of the humerus correlate significantly with two IQ scores in the boys and all three scores in the girls. Measures of the total metacarpal and marrow area show significant correlations with the three IQ scores among low-IQ boys, while only measures of total metacarpal area show significant correlations with verbal IQ in low-IQ girls. The degree of mental deficiency, then, is only irregularly associated with deficits of bone size for age.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine ethnic differences in adiposity as measured by sum of skinfolds (SKF) and waist circumference (WC) in children and adolescents, after statistical adjustment for the BMI and age. A cross sectional sample of 3,218 (55% white, 49% male) children and adolescents aged 5–18 years who participated in the Bogalusa Heart Study (1992–1994) were included in these analyses. Sex‐specific ANOVAs, adjusted for BMI and age, for each 2‐year age group compared measures of adiposity (SKF and WC) between ethnic groups. No significant differences in the proportions of children and adolescents who were overweight and obese by ethnicity or sex were found. Mean SKF in normal weight (P < 0.0001) and overweight (P < 0.0001) categories was higher for white than black children of both sexes. Across most age categories, white boys and girls had significantly higher SKF than black boys and girls, respectively (P ≤ 0.05). Across most age categories, white boys had significantly higher WC than black boys (P ≤ 0.05) with no difference in the girls, when adjusted for BMI and age. Measures of adiposity in childhood and adolescence were significantly higher in white children compared to black children, when adjusted for BMI and age. Throughout childhood and adolescence, white boys and girls had higher SKF and white boys had higher WC. Differences in adiposity between ethnic groups should be considered in disease risk assessment and stratification as they are observed even for a given BMI level.  相似文献

Bones in the axial and appendicular skeletons exhibit heterogeneous growth patterns between different ethnic and sex groups. However, the influence of this differential growth on the expression of bone mineral content is not yet established. The aims of the present study were to investigate: 1) whether there are ethnic and sex differences in axial and appendicular dimensions of South African children; and 2) whether regional segment length is a better predictor of bone mass than stature. Anthropometric measurements of stature, weight, sitting height, and limb lengths were taken on 368 black and white, male and female 9-year-old children. DXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) scans of the distal ulna, distal radius, and hip and lumbar spine were also obtained. Analyses of covariance were performed to assess differences in limb lengths, adjusted for differences in stature. Multiple regression analyses were used to assess significant predictors of site-specific bone mass. Stature-adjusted means of limb lengths show that black boys have longer legs and humeri but shorter trunks than white boys. In addition, black children have longer forearms than white children, and girls have longer thighs than boys. The regression analysis demonstrated that site-specific bone mass was more strongly associated with regional segment length than stature, but this had little effect on the overall pattern of ethnic and sex differences. In conclusion, there is a differential effect of ethnicity and sex on the growth of the axial and appendicular skeletons, and regional segment length is a better predictor of site-specific bone mass than stature.  相似文献

Correlations of size of teeth, chin, bone and body were investigated in 118 males and 102 females of the Burlington Growth Centre. In the males, the mesiodistal widths of the mandibular lateral incisors and canines were independently related to the thickness of the cortex of the second metacarpal and to body weight. Bone cortex thickness was significantly related to metacarpal width in males and to body weight in females. Chin depth of the males was significantly related to bone width and to body height, and negatively related to tooth width when bone width or body weight was held constant in partial correlations. Bone width and length were significantly related to body height in both sexes.  相似文献

Objective: The possibility that there are racial differences in the patterns of BMI (kilograms per meter squared) change throughout life has not been examined. For example, the high prevalence of obesity among black women could result from a higher prevalence of obesity among black girls or because normal‐weight black girls experience larger BMI increases in adolescence or adulthood than do their white counterparts. Therefore, we examined the tracking of childhood BMI into adulthood in a biracial (36% black) sample. Research Methods and Procedures: Five‐ to 14‐year‐old children (2392) were followed for (mean) 17 years. Childhood overweight was defined as BMI ≥ 95th percentile, and adult obesity was defined as BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2. Results: The tracking of childhood BMI differed between whites and blacks. Among overweight children, 65% of white girls vs. 84% of black girls became obese adults, and predictive values among boys were 71% (whites) vs. 82% (blacks). These racial differences reflected contrasting patterns in the rate of BMI change. Although the initial BMI of black children was not higher than that of white children, BMI increases with age were larger among black girls and overweight black boys than among their white counterparts. In contrast, relatively thin (BMI < 50th percentile) white boys were more likely to become overweight adults than were their black counterparts. Discussion: These findings emphasize the black/white differences in BMI changes with age. Because of the adult health consequences of childhood‐onset obesity, early prevention should be given additional emphasis.  相似文献

Reproducibility of estimates of cortical bone quantity in the appendicular skeleton by two methods was studied in healthy individuals and patients undergoing long-term hemodialysis. Repeated measurements of cortical thickness (CT) at the midpoint of the second metacarpal were taken from single radiographs of both hands by two independent observers. Repeated measurements by the same observer were more reproducible and the degree of reproducibility was far greater in healthy subjects than in dialysis patients. Repeated measurements were made of bone mineral content (BMC) and bone width (W) of the distal radius by photon absorptiometry. Repeated BMC/W determinations were highly reproducible in both healthy subjects and dialysis patients. High correlation was found between BMC and cross-sectional cortical area and between both simple cortical thickness and cortical area/width. Thus the photon absorptiometric technique is superior for the serial monitoring of bone quantity, particularly in patients with uremic osteodystrophy, but results obtained by the two methods in group studies should be comparable.  相似文献

The prevalence of overweight children in the United States has increased dramatically over the past two decades, and is creating well-known public health problems. Moreover, there is also evidence that children who are not overweight are becoming heavier. We use quantile regression models along with standard ordinary least squares (OLS) models to explore the correlates of childhood weight status and overweight as measured by the Body Mass Index (BMI). This approach allows the effects of covariates to vary depending on where in the BMI distribution a child is located. Our results indicate that OLS masks some of the important correlates of child BMI at the upper and lower tails of the weight distribution. For example, mother's education has no effect on black children, but is associated with improvements in BMI for overweight white boys and underweight white girls. Conversely, mother's cognitive aptitude has no effect on white boys, but is associated with BMI improvements for underweight black children and overweight white girls. Further, we find that underweight white children and black girls experience similar improvements in BMI as they get older, but that for black boys there is little if any association between age and BMI anywhere in the BMI distribution.  相似文献

Cortical bone width measurements taken at midshaft on the second metacarpal were obtained from 156 hand X-rays of 80 karyotypically documented individuals with Turner's syndrome age 1 to 25 years. Total shaft width, medullary width, cortical width and percent cortical area were grouped by bone age and compared with normal female standards. Total width was significantly and increasingly below normal; medullary width was not consistently different from normal; cortical width was significantly lower from normal from age 14 onward, although it did rise at age 17 (adult bone age); percent cortical area was significantly below normal at ages 14 and 15, but was normal by adulthood. Values for percent cortical area did not indicate severe or widespread osteoporosis. Within the Turners sample cortical bone measurement were not significantly decreased in the presence of the XO sex chromosome constitution compared with other sex chromosome variants. Nor were the measurements decreased in the presence of positive metacarpal sign or a combination of typical Turner stigmata (web neck, low posterior hairline, shield chest). There was evidence that cortical width and percent cortical area increased significantly following estrogen treatment or spontaneous menarche.  相似文献

Distance and velocity curves for height and weight were analyzed in a mixed longitudinal sample of American White, American Negro and Mexican-American deaf children 6 through 17 years of age. The heights of deaf boys and girls are, on the average, consistently below an accepted pediatric standard from six through ten years of age. Between 11 and 17 years, deaf White and Negro boys approximate the standard, while White and Negro girls are at or slightly below the standard. Deaf Mexican-American children are consistently below the height standard. For body weight, deaf boys are at or slightly below the standard from 6 to 11 years, and are at or slightly above the weight standard from 12 to 17 years of age. White and Negro deaf girls generally approximate the weight standard from eight years of age on. Mexican-American deaf girls are consistently below the standard until 13 years of age, while between 14 and 17 years they are at or above the standard. Height and weight velocity curves for deaf children parallel closely the incremental standards of Falkner ('62). The height velocity curve, however, appears to peak, on the average, about one year earlier in deaf children.  相似文献

Endochondral growth, appositional growth, and acquisition of cortical bone thickness in the femur are investigated in subadult skeletons (N = 43, dental age range birth to 12 years) from the 19th‐century AD burial site of St. Martin's churchyard, Birmingham, England. Endochondral growth is monitored using diaphyseal femoral length. Appositional growth is monitored using radiographic midshaft mediolateral width and acquisition of cortical bone using combined mediolateral cortical thickness measured at the midshaft from radiographs. The methodology involves plotting these variables against dental age. Growth is compared in children of differing socioeconomic status. Higher and lower status individuals are identified in the assemblage by their burial in brick vaults in the case of the former and in earth‐cut graves in the case of the latter. The relationships between bone dimensions and dental age are described using a polynomial regression procedure, and analysis of regression residuals is used to evaluate differences in bone dimension‐for‐dental age between the two status groups. Results show that lower socioeconomic status individuals had lower cortical thickness‐for‐dental age than those of higher status. This was interpreted as likely reflecting poorer nutrition in the children of lower socioeconomic backgrounds. There was no patterning with respect to socioeconomic status in femur diaphyseal length or midshaft width. The results support the idea that, for skeletal populations, growth in cortical thickness may be a more sensitive indicator of adverse conditions in childhood than growth in bone length or width. Bilateral asymmetry in the structure of the second metacarpal was examined in relation to functional hand dominance in a large, clinically nonselected, healthy population sample from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. Bilateral bone measurements were made from anteroposterior hand radiographs of a total of 992 individuals, 609 males and 383 females, with an age range of 19–94 years. Hand dominance was determined on the basis of personal impression. Total width and medullary width at the midshaft of the second metacarpal were measured to 0.05 mm using a Helios caliper. These two measurements were used to derive cortical thickness, cortical bone area, periosteal (total) area, medullary area, percent cortical area, and the second moment of area in the mediolateral plane. In both right and left-handed individuals, statistically significant side differences were found in the calculated bone areas and the second moment of area, with the dominant hand being larger. Cortical thickness did not show significant side-related differences for either handedness. These results show that functional handedness leads to periosteal and endosteal expansion of the second metacarpal cortex on the dominant side, increasing bone strength without increasing cortical thickness. This is the first time this pattern of asymmetry has been reported in left-handers as well as right-handers. Our results argue for the primacy of environmental (mechanical) effects in determining bilateral asymmetry of limb bone structural properties. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Objective: To associate psychological status, weight‐related distress, and weight status during childhood in overweight or at‐risk‐for‐overweight children. Research Methods and Procedures: We associated self‐report of depression, trait anxiety, and weight‐related distress (body size dissatisfaction and weight‐related peer teasing after controlling for the effects of weight) in 164 children (black 35%; age 11.9 ± 2.5 years; girls 51%) who were overweight or at‐high‐risk‐for‐overweight and were not seeking weight loss. Results: Overall, heavier children reported more psychological and weight‐related distress. Black children reported more anxiety and body size dissatisfaction than white children, despite equivalent weights. However, psychological distress was not significantly associated with weight in white children. Girls reported more weight‐related distress than boys. Depression was associated with weight‐related teasing in all predictive models, except in the model using only black subjects. Trait anxiety was associated with report of peer teasing when using all subjects. Depression was also significantly associated with children's report of body size dissatisfaction in models using all subjects, only girls, or white subjects, but not in analyses using only boys or black subjects. For boys peer teasing was associated with body size dissatisfaction. In models including only black children, depression and trait anxiety were not significantly associated with either report of peer teasing or body size dissatisfaction. Discussion: Regardless of race or sex, increasing weight is associated with emotional and weight‐related distress in children. However, associations of psychological status, weight, and weight‐related distress differ for girls and boys, and for black and white children.  相似文献

The prevalence of Type A behavior in children from lower-class rural and upper-class urban backgrounds was compared using the Hunter-Wolf A-B Self-Rating Scale (H-W A-B). Analyses of variance were performed for two levels of socioeconomic status (SES), two levels of race (black and white), two levels of gender, and two levels of age (9-11 and 13-14). A significant difference for SES was found in the predicted direction with a greater prevalence of Type A being found among upper-urban children (p less than .001). There was also a significant effect for race (p less than .0001). Although there was a significant effect for gender with boys scoring higher (p less than .001), there was no difference between boys and girls within either SES group, and both boys and girls in the upper-urban group were more Type A than boys and girls in the lower-rural group (p less than .001). The possibility that the lack of sex differences within groups may reflect changing lifestyles for young women is discussed as a topic worthy of further epidemiological investigation.  相似文献

Two hundred thirty–five (235) normal male participants of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study were classified as right handed, left handed, and ambidextrous on the basis of their grip–strength performance. Their left and right hands were also radiographed and the measurements of the second metacarpal bones were evaluated on the basis of hand dominance. The results indicated that, as a rule, the right hand measurements are higher than those of the left hand, regardless of hand dominance. The bilateral differences in total width, length, total area and cortical area are significant among the right hand dominant and nonsignificant among the left hand dominant. Regardless off hand dominance the bilateral differences in medullary width are nonsignificant. These results suggest an inherent tendency of the right second metacarpal to have more bone than the left regardless of hand dominance. Differential stress due to hand dominance will increase the bilateral difference in the right handed and reduce it in the left handed.  相似文献
