Sixty-nine nonmetrical morphological variants of the cranium have been studied in six samples of non-tribal, state populations in India, and their incidence reported. Using C.A.B. Smith’s angular transformation of frequencies, the multivariate Thetasquare distances and their respective standard deviations have been presented. On the basis of nonmetrical cranial variation, it is clear that the samples from Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar are closer to each other but distant from Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. On the other hand, Karnataka and Maharashtra samples are quite close to each other and both, in turn, are comparatively closer to Madhya Pradesh than to Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. Madhya Pradesh sample emerges as the most divergent group among the six population samples studied. This, in general, is in conformity with the picture that emerges from various analysis of morphometric and other biological data on various populations of India.  相似文献

The anterior placement of the foramen magnum is often used to indicate bipedalism and therefore to distinguish hominid from nonhominid fossils. Often, only fragmentary cranial remains are found, and the placement of the foramen magnum must be determined by its relationship to another landmark. The purpose of this study was to test if hominid crania could be distinguished from nonhominid crania based on the relationship between the foramen magnum and the carotid foramina, and therefore to determine if the carotid foramina can be used to determine the anteriorness of the foramen magnum. The samples consisted of 16 modern human crania and 19 modern chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) crania. Linear measurements were taken of (1) the distance from the anterior border of the foramen magnum to a chord connecting the carotid foramina and (2) total cranial length. An index of the distance of the foramen magnum from the bicarotid chord as a proportion of total cranial length was calculated to control for differences due to body size. Results indicate that on average, human crania can be distinguished from chimpanzee crania by using either (1) the distance of the foramen magnum from the bicarotid chord as a linear measurement or (2) this linear measurement as a proportion of total cranial length. Both measures are significantly smaller in the human sample; however, there was considerable overlap between species, indicating that the distance of the foramen magnum from the bicarotid chord is not a certain indicator for individual specimens.  相似文献

Matrix correlation represents an innovative methodology to evaluate the explanatory power of several hypotheses by measuring their correspondence with observed morphological variation. In this paper, we view the origins of Patagonians from a matrix correlation approach. Personal and published data on nonmetric cranial traits were used to estimate a biological distance matrix involving five major groups from Patagonia and two from the northwest and northeast regions of Argentina. To evaluate correspondence with other important factors, we used a geographic distance matrix and four design matrices, representing several patterns of settlement and differentiation. Biological distance was found to be strongly associated with spatial separation; the correlation between geography and nonmetric cranial distances was highly significant. When geographic distance is held constant, correlation between a model representing high levels of heterogeneity between the samples and morphological (nonmetric) variation becomes highly significant.  相似文献

The dwarf gerbil (Gerbillus nanus) is broadly distributed in Asia, with a range that encompasses altitudinally diverse terrain, including two major mountain ranges. Previous studies have shown this species to be generally varied across its geographic range, both genetically and morphologically. Physical barriers (e.g. mountains) and geographic distance (i.e. isolation by distance [IBD]) are expected to reduce dispersal rates, and consequently could lead to cranial morphological differentiation among populations. Adaptation to local environments is also expected to lead to cranial morphological differentiation among populations. Here, I test these hypotheses by examining variation in cranial shape and size across the geographic distribution of G. nanus using geometric morphometric analysis. Based on a sample of 473 specimens from throughout its distribution, G. nanus populations do not seem to show biologically meaningful variation in cranial shape. Cranial size, on the other hand, did show geographic variation—yet, this variation does not seem to show strong patterns of IBD nor adaptation to local environments, which could indicate that the geographic variation in the cranial size of G. nanus populations may be accounted for by factors unexamined in this study.  相似文献

Evolutionary investigations of human crania typically take a limited view of cranial diversity as they discount the possibility that human cranial variation could simply be due to the effects of random genetic drift, gene flow and mutation in favor of natural selection and developmental changes. Natural selection alone cannot explain similarities between patterns of cranial and molecular diversity observed in humans. It appears that the amount of phenotypic variance in the human cranium decreases at the population level as a function of distance from Sub-Saharan Africa much in the same way as observed for human molecular data.  相似文献

Recent studies comparing craniometric and neutral genetic affinity matrices have concluded that, on average, human cranial variation fits a model of neutral expectation. While human craniometric and genetic data fit a model of isolation by geographic distance, it is not yet clear whether this is due to geographically mediated gene flow or human dispersal events. Recently, human genetic data have been shown to fit an iterative founder effect model of dispersal with an African origin, in line with the out-of-Africa replacement model for modern human origins, and Manica et al. (Nature 448 (2007) 346-349) have demonstrated that human craniometric data also fit this model. However, in contrast with the neutral model of cranial evolution suggested by previous studies, Manica et al. (2007) made the a priori assumption that cranial form has been subject to climatically driven natural selection and therefore correct for climate prior to conducting their analyses. Here we employ a modified theoretical and methodological approach to test whether human cranial variability fits the iterative founder effect model. In contrast with Manica et al. (2007) we employ size-adjusted craniometric variables, since climatic factors such as temperature have been shown to correlate with aspects of cranial size. Despite these differences, we obtain similar results to those of Manica et al. (2007), with up to 26% of global within-population craniometric variation being explained by geographic distance from sub-Saharan Africa. Comparative analyses using non-African origins do not yield significant results. The implications of these results are discussed in the light of the modern human origins debate.  相似文献

Static adult craniometric allometry was evaluated in a sample of 66Otolemur crassicaudatus skulls (34 males, 32 females). Although cranial measures were equally well correlated to skull length in males and females, there were noteworthy differences in the exponential values between the sexes. These results underlined the need for caution when allometric analyses are based on pooled data. From the cranial allometric analyses it is concluded that the longer the skull, the shorter and the narrower the maxilla, and the broader the bizygomatic distance. Although cranial length increased proportionately to the increase in skull length, the cranial width in females was positively allometric whilst in males it was negatively allometric. Allometric analyses of mandibular dimensions suggest that larger animals will have proportionately longer mandibulae, which will, in turn, be relatively wider across the gonia, yet shallower behind the first molars. It is postulated that the disproportionate widening of the zygomata might be related to the widening across the gonia.  相似文献

Migratory cranial neural crest cells differentiate into a wide range of cell types, such as ectomesenchymal tissue (bone and connective tissues) ventrally in the branchial arches and neural tissue (neurons and glia) dorsally. We investigated spatial and temporal changes of migration and differentiation potential in neural crest populations derived from caudal midbrain and rhombomeres 1 and 2 by back-transplanting cells destined for the first branchial arch and trigeminal ganglion from HH8-HH19 quail into HH7-HH11 chicks. Branchial arch cells differentiated down ectomesenchymal lineages but largely lost both the ability to localize to the trigeminal position and neurogenic differentiation capacity by HH12-HH13, even before the arch is visible, and lost long distance migratory ability around HH17. In contrast, neural crest-derived cells from trigeminal ganglia lost ectomesechymal differentiation potential by HH17. Despite this, they retain the ability to migrate into the branchial arches until at least HH19. However, many of the neural crest-derived trigeminal ganglia cells in the branchial arch localized to the non-neural crest core of the arch from HH13 and older donors. These results suggest that long distance migration ability, finer scale localization, and lineage restriction may not be coordinately regulated in the cranial neural crest population.  相似文献

The correlated evolution of traits may be a principal factor in morphological evolution, but it is typically studied in genetic or developmental systems. Most studies examining phenotypic trait correlations, through analysis of morphological integration, consider only few taxa, with limited ability to test hypotheses of the influence of trait integration on morphological variation and diversity. The few comparative studies in less inclusive groups have yielded varying relationships of integration to the key factors of phylogeny and diet. In this paper, I present analyses of cranial morphological integration in 30 species from the mammalian order Carnivora, spanning eight extant families and a wide range of ecological and morphological diversity. Fifty-five cranial landmarks were captured through three-dimensional digitization of 15-22 specimens for each species. Using a node-based phylogenetic distance matrix, a significant correlation was found between similarity in patterns of integration and phylogenetic relatedness within Felidae (cats) and Canidae (dogs), but not within more inclusive clades, when size-related variation was removed. When size was included, significant correlations were found across all Caniformia, Musteloidea, Mustelidae, and Felidae. There was a significant correlation between phylogeny and morphological integration only within the higher-level clade Feliformia (cats, civets, mongooses, and hyaenas) when a branch-length-based phylogenetic distance matrix was analyzed, with and without size. In contrast, diet was significantly correlated with similarity in morphological integration in arctoid carnivorans (bears, raccoons, and weasels), but had no significant relationship with integration in feliforms or canids. These results support the proposition that evolutionary history is correlated with cranial integration across large clades, although in some smaller clades diet also exerts significant influence on the correlated evolution of traits.  相似文献

Studies of morphological integration provide valuable information on the correlated evolution of traits and its relationship to long-term patterns of morphological evolution. Thus far, studies of morphological integration in mammals have focused on placentals and have demonstrated that similarity in integration is broadly correlated with phylogenetic distance and dietary similarity. Detailed studies have also demonstrated a significant correlation between developmental relationships among structures and adult morphological integration. However, these studies have not yet been applied to marsupial taxa, which differ greatly from placentals in reproductive strategy and cranial development and could provide the diversity necessary to assess the relationships among phylogeny, ecology, development, and cranial integration. This study presents analyses of morphological integration in 20 species of australodelphian marsupials, and shows that phylogeny is significantly correlated with similarity of morphological integration in most clades. Size-related correlations have a significant affect on results, particularly in Peramelia, which shows a striking decrease in similarity of integration among species when size is removed. Diet is not significantly correlated with similarity of integration in any marsupial clade. These results show that marsupials differ markedly from placental mammals in the relationships of cranial integration, phylogeny, and diet, which may be related to the accelerated development of the masticatory apparatus in marsupials.  相似文献

Previous studies on the elongation of the Ambystoma pronephric duct provided evidence that this morphogenetic movement is adhesion directed. Through the use of a simple and rapid grafting technique that enables genetically marked donor and host cells to be distinguished in transplantation experiments, we demonstrate that cranial neural crest cells, which normally migrate concurrently with, but at a distance from, pronephric duct cells, are able to follow the pronephric duct guidance information. Utilizing neural crest cells as probes for adhesive properties of the lateral plate mesoderm, we extend our previous model of the formal properties of the pronephric duct guidance information. We propose that cells of the cranial neural crest, the pronephric duct primordium and the lateral plate mesoderm all exhibit molecular components of at least one shared cell adhesion system.  相似文献

On the basis of the means of 10 cranial measurements of 7 medieval populations different methodical approaches of the two commonly used distance estimation methods are compared with respect to their relevance. In addition also the results obtained by the same methods but based on different data (5 indices or 10 measurements, respectively) were compared. In spite of the fact that (DD)2 distances and the dendrograms (after Creel) give better results than the other methodical and graphic variants, the choice of qualified characters is more important than a certain distance method according to the authors' opinion. Thus the groupings and the clustering on the basis of the means of only 5 cranial indices show the best accordance with the ethnogenetic and historical conditions. An additional examination of the segregative values of cranial measurements revealed that the omission of the smallest frontal breadth and probably also the nasal height and breadth does not result in a reduction of the segregative accuracy.  相似文献

One of the major adaptations during the evolution of Homo sapiens was an increase in brain size. Here we present evidence that a significant and substantial proportion of variation in brain size may be related to changes in temperature. Based on a sample of 109 fossilized hominid skulls, we found that cranial capacities were highly correlated with paleoclimatic changes in temperature, as indexed by oxygen isotope data and sea-surface temperature. Indeed, as much as 52% of the variance in the cranial capacity of these skulls could be accounted for by temperature variation at 100 ka intervals. As an index of more short-term seasonal fluctuations in temperature, we examined the latitude of the sites from which the crania originated. More than 22% of the variance in cranial capacity of these skulls could be accounted for by variation in equatorial distance.  相似文献

The calcified tissues involved in the early morphogenesis of the cranial vault were studied by microradiographic analysis and histological techniques in 12 chick embryos on the 9th, 12th, and 14th days of incubation. On the 9th day, the frontal, parietal, and squamosal bones are comprised of a thin lamina of chondroid tissue deposited at a short distance from the fibers of the dura mater. Woven bone formation takes place in the calvarial mesenchyme only after the 12th day of incubation and occurs mainly on the external side of the chondroid primordium. The present data obviously indicate that the primitive desmocranium of the chick embryo, which is usually known to be formed by intramembranous ossification, consists first of chondroid tissue. This tissue represents thus the initial modality of skeletogenic differentiation within the cephalic mesenchyme of the cranial vault.  相似文献

A modified technique for the surgical correction of trigonocephaly is presented. The technical modifications are designed both to increase the stability of fixation of the supraorbital bar and lateral canthal advancements and to increase interorbital distance and anterior cranial fossa volume when utilized in those patients who exhibit the full expression of trigonocephaly, including midline ridging, bifrontal recession, hypotelorbitism, shortened anterior cranial fossa, deficient projection of lateral orbit, and bitemporal narrowing. It is a modification of the supraorbital bar remodeling/advancement procedure as originally described by Marchac with the introduction of a nasofrontal osteotomy and superior osteotomy bone graft and midline miniplate fixation of the supraorbital bar to the nasofrontal junction. Its use in 20 patients has been favorable.  相似文献

To assess the potential of a porous hydroxyapatite matrix to serve as a bone graft substitute, bilateral 15 X 20 mm craniectomy defects were reconstructed in 17 dogs with blocks of implant and split-rib autografts. Specimens were retrieved at 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 months, and undecalcified sections were prepared for microscopy and histometry. The implant and graft cross-sectional areas did not change with time, documenting their equivalent ability to maintain cranial contour. Bone ingrowth extended across the implant from one cranial shelf to the other in 15 specimens. Little apparent bone ingrowth was seen in most graft specimens. Two implants and three grafts were nonunited, possibly due to lack of fixation or the orientation of the histology sections. The implant specimens were composed of 39.3 percent hydroxyapatite matrix, 17.2 percent bone ingrowth, and 43.5 percent soft-tissue ingrowth. The graft specimens were composed of 43.7 percent bone and 56.3 percent soft tissue. This study supported the thesis that a porous hydroxyapatite matrix may function in part as a bone graft substitute. The brittle hydroxyapatite matrix undoubtedly became stronger with bone ingrowth, but the degree of cranial protection achieved was not measured in this study. The size of the cranial defect used in this study did not permit estimation of the distance over which bone ingrowth may be reliably expected. There remains a need for greater understanding of the causes of nonunion, the extent of predictable ingrowth depth, and the strength of the resultant implant-bone composite.  相似文献
